5 out of 5 stars (RAW Rating: 4.5) - What is happening to black men?.......2007-08-04

Demico Boothe has explored the reasons so many black men are indeed in prison in, WHY ARE SO MANY BLACK MEN IN PRISON? He begins with his own story of a shaky upbringing and his subsequent dabbling in drug dealing. He was caught with a few grams of crack cocaine but because it was the dreaded crack, he was given 10 years in prison. When he left prison after serving his time, he was actually railroaded back into prison by a crooked justice system. He delves deeply into our justice system and the motives behind all the new prisons that are being built. He gives succinct and reasonable views of exactly what is happening now in the United States and how the past has played a role in the present. He uses persuasive statistics regarding the number of black men in prison as compared to the number of white men who are incarcerated.

Demico Boothe has done an excellent job of researching his subject and it is a plus, if unfortunate for him, that he has actually experienced first hand what he's talking about. I knew I was hearing the real story rather than just statistics from an intellectual who had no real idea of what the prison system is really like. I would have liked for Boothe to search a little deeper into the Haiti, Aristide and USA question, maybe even reading Randall Robinson's take on the situation, and then he might see it a bit differently. Otherwise, it is a good book and one every one in America should read. We indeed, have a crisis going on.

The book was very interesting. I learned soooo much about the government and the prison industry. I did some searching independantly to check on the things reported in the book and they are very true. Great Read!! Buy the book.

4 out of 5 stars A Must Read.......2007-05-25

Mr. Demico's book is a must-read for anyone concerned about young African American men. Although I did not agree with every conclusion he reached, Demico's main premises are convincing. As a white woman who teaches mainly students of color, I am always impressed, and often in awe, of those young men who reach college with so much going against them. Demico's books lays bare not only the horrible inequalities of our society, but also the racist attitudes of our political system - - Democrats, Republicans, and most everyone in between.

I is a well put together book. He really goes into a lot of detail of how our society is really set up.

3 out of 5 stars Why are so many blacks in prison?.......2007-05-12

I found this book very interesting. As a white devil myself, I had no idea that I was responsible for forcing blacks into committing crimes and then subsequently clogging up the whole "Prison Industrial Complex"(tm). I will try to stop causing this, as I am sure it is creating a LOT of trouble for everyone! Sorry!

It is probably also my fault that young black men dressed in XXXXL clothes overtly threaten me and my family members routinely. Can anyone tell me what I should do to make this not happen?

I imagine it's also my fault that black on white violent crime is WAY higher than white on black violent crime, even though blacks constitute about 12.5% of the population, and whites are about 70%. But since it is impossible for a black to commit a hate crime according to our criminal justice system (since blacks are not under any circumstances racist), statistically, there are more white on black hate crimes. Boothe notes a statistic regarding hate crimes, but he skips the one about interracial violence in general.

In sum, Boothe notes that just about everything blacks do is actually MY fault, because my skin is white. Boothe, I've got a word for you.

Introspection.

    Book Description

Long before the 1970s and the feminist revolution that shattered traditional notions of the family, black women in America had already accomplished their own revolution. Bart Landry's groundbreaking study adds immeasurably to our accepted concepts of "traditional" and "new" families: Landry argues that black middle-class women in two-parent families were practicing an egalitarian lifestyle that was envisioned by few of their white counterparts until many decades later.
The primary transformation of the American family, Landry says, took place when nineteenth-century industrialization brought about the separation of home and workplace. Only then did the family we call traditional, in which the husband goes out to work while the wife stays at home, become the centerpiece of white middle-class ideology. Black women, excluded from this model of respectability, embraced a threefold commitment to family, community, and career. They embodied the notion that employment outside the home was the route to more equality in the home, and that work was worth pursuing for reasons other than economic survival.
With a careful and convincing mix of biography, historical records, and demographic data, Landry shows how these black pioneers of the dual-career marriage created a paradigm for other women seeking to escape the cult of domesticity and thus foreshadowed the second great family transformation. If the two-parent nuclear family is to persist beyond the twentieth century, it may be because of what we can learn from these earlier women about an ideology of womanhood that combines the private and public spheres.

Drug-addled, welfare-using and AIDS-infected, Rosa Lee--a black woman living in the slums of Washington, D.C.--shines an enormous amount of light on the seemingly intractable problems of the underclass by allowing Leon Dash to tell her story. You won't find any diagrams or number-crunching in this book, just an absorbing tale of inner-city despair. Dash won the Pulitzer Prize for his series of articles on Rosa Lee for the Washington Post. The book is even better--easily the best of its type since Alex Kotlowitz's There Are No Children Here.

5 out of 5 stars The Real hard times of a citizen growing up in The projects........2006-06-07

Rosa Lee: A Mother and Her Family In Urban America shows what can really happen if an individual does not require a successful education. The problems of Rosa Lee were dropping out of school because her own mother says that education is a waste of time and gets her nowhere in life. Other problems were growing up in the projects selling and shooting heroin, tricking, and shoplifting her way through life. The biggest problem of Rosa Lee were knowing six out of your eight children are doing the same activities as herself. Her number one quote of getting through life, "To Survive", is the worst way to live through life as a poor individual. Leon Dash really shows what it's like growing up in one of poorest ghettos of Washington D.C. The Rosa Lee book is astonishing and I encourage everyone to read it so they are influenced. I give it two thumbs up!

    4 out of 5 stars Thought provoking.......2005-01-07

If the measure of a good book is that it exposes you to new information and makes you think, then this a great book! I enjoyed Mr Dash's even-handed writing style, it wasn't overly critical or sympathetic. Rosa Lee has made some very poor decisions in her lifetime, ones that will have far-reaching effects on the generations that come after her. The book gives you the insight as to why she made those decisions without excusing her actions. I came away from this book with more questions than I had when I started reading. It's almost a "which came first, the chicken or the egg?" scenario...it makes you wonder if Rosa Lee created her own problems or if her problems created her? As a Sociologist I have always been interested in urban blight and deviant behavior and try to read as much on the topic as possible, and I must say that this is one of the better books that I have read. I would also highly recommend "The Corner" as another book that explores the issues facing the urban underclass. Thank you Mr. Dash for daring to uncover an ugly part of America that some people wish would stay hidden!

3 out of 5 stars Your Tax Dollars At Work.......2003-04-16

This book made me incredibly angry. In a nutshell, it is the horrifying story of one woman's life and legacy of ignorance, immorality, illegality, and vice. It's a very compelling read and well-written in terms of the subject matter, but there is a consistent theme throughout the book of "failure of the system," which I found insulting considering Rosa Lee and her family's grave manipulation, exploitation, and abuse of every helping hand extended.

    5 out of 5 stars Another World!!.......2002-08-06

I did'nt want to be judgmental, so I when into the book open mindedly. What I found out was Rosa Lee was Mentally abused by her mother and was loved by her father! When she has children, she overcompensates for everything they do. If you want Drugs, drama and reality you've got it. Three generations!! I found a silver lining in Rosa Lee's cloud, NOW YOU HAVE TO FIND IT!!

    5 out of 5 stars it's the system, man - but..........2001-09-04

Mr. Dashs treatment of Rosa Lees life course achieves a highly deserving goal by apparently paradoxical means: it exposes the traps of initial and subsequent living conditions by showing an individual's life shaped by it's decisions and choices. He never allows the reader to wallow in simple compassion or anger, and he never resorts to the true but useless explanation that the system is responsible for Rosa Lees miserable life. He always keeps your mind active and attentive.
A good example is his report on Rosa Lees trial for shoplifting: while the defence insists that Rosa Lee might be a thief but is a very unfortunate woman and had to steal in order to support her family and her addiction, Dash points out that Rosa Lee has been shoplifting already in her early childhood while none of her siblings did shoplift. This suggest that her behavior might have had a functionality within her relationship with her mother, not only in her relationship with the system. By never letting individual dynamics and decisions, however constraining their contexts and however dismal their consequences, be covered up by the overwhelming explanatory power of economic deprivation, he manages to show in a touching and revealing way how a person's place within a system translates into his or her behavior and behavior outcomes. Especially by never denying the individual Rosa Lee or any of her children their agency in shaping their lives, by never reducing them to inevitable victims unfortunate-but-now-beyond-redemption, by describing extensively how two of teh children escaped addiction and poverty, he exposes the systems' crushing cruelty.

      Book Description

Anthropologist Eric Bailey uses a cultural and holistic analysis of African American food preferences to show how black Americans generally perceive health, body image, food, dieting, physical fitness, and exercise. As is true of Americans overall, black Americans are becoming more overweight and obese than ever before. So, too, they are seeing the consequences: heart attacks, strokes, hypertension, and Type II diabetes at earlier and earlier ages. Bailey offers a new "cultural" diet for black Americans and a prescription for working collectively, not only to understand this critical health issue, but also to establish a lifestyle strategy that will be both effective and manageable Includes:
    • Celebrity Black Americans who have fought excess weight
    • The cultural history of Black American cuisine
    • A review of soul food cookbooks
    • A critique of corporate America's failure to market health and fitness to the Black community
    • An overview of federally funded diet and fitness programs for Black Americans. This work will interest not only general readers, but also students and scholars in health and medicine, psychology and health psychology, nursing and social work.

The author made excellent points about the relationships among African-Americans. His explanation of statisitics tied in with his theory show that he is very educated, and that he is not basing his ideas on what he "think he knows". This book has made me realize the mistakes I've made in life, and taught me how to move on and not make the same mistakes again. One important point he makes is to take care of all YOUR issues first, so you have the time and energy to focus on a LASTING relationaship later.

      Book Description

Bolstered by national television exposure on Oprah and a cover story in the New York Times Magazine, the "down low"—a term used to refer to "straight" men who have sex with men—was thrust into the open in 2004. Keith Boykin, a former Clinton White House aide, goes beyond the hype with the first responsible, eye-opening look at the down low sensation. Unlike all previous accounts on the topic, Beyond the Down Low presents the DL not merely as a problem of gay and bisexual men living in the shadows, but more as an example of America's unwillingness to engage in critical but uncomfortable conversations about black sexuality. Boykin details how society has helped to create an environment where black gay and bisexual men feel compelled to lead double lives. Meanwhile, the dialogue that has taken place in the black community encourages an unhealthy battle of the sexes, ignores the complexity of the closet, demonizes bisexuality, disempowers women, and misdirects public resources and attention. This book is a timely and well researched answer to the question, "Why are so many black men on the DL?" More importantly, it is an essential tool to pry open the closet door in black America.

4 out of 5 stars Informative, Insightful, but Somewhat Repetitive........2007-02-23

I knew very little about the term "Down Low" and the ramifications it presents. After hearing about this book during a dinner conversation, I decided to give it a try with the goals of learning something new while expanding my cultural vision. Both came to fruition. I learned something new - primarily the backlog of information regarding the debates on DL and its impact, particularly on the Black community in the United States. I also learned that it is not a standardized term that explains the ambiguity that often shadows discussions on the issue.

What Boykin does well is present a number of facts that help someone understand what the current discussion is. What Boykin does not do well is present the facts in a manner that is conducive to a completely enjoyable read. I enjoyed the beginning of each chapter that were often peppered with personal anecdotes, but began to quickly lose interest mid-way through each section when presented with - what appeared to be - a super-saturated presentation of statistics. That would have been quite fine had the statistics not been repeated so often. I found a good portion of the book to be redundant.

All said, I this is a great primer on a timely issue. I would recommend it for anyone who has heard of the Down Low and is interested in learning more with facts.

      5 out of 5 stars MUST READ!!!!!!.......2007-02-16

This book was a great book. I must say when I first got the book I was in dout thats it was about anything pozitive or helpful to the black community. But I must say I was very happy with this book. Keith Boykin really did alot of resaerch to put this book togeather. I think that any on that read the book (ON THE DOWN LOW)By J. L. King. Should read this book to get a full understand of things, and take away some of the fears, Lies and myths about HIV and the down low. It is a must read!!!! :)

      5 out of 5 stars Definately a better read than J.L. King's book.......2006-05-05

Instead of sensationalizing the issue, I felt Mr. Boykin was aiming to educate people about homosexuality in black America instead of entertaining the masses. Great book!

2 out of 5 stars Take it or leave it.......2005-07-20

I've just finished reading Boykin's book, "Beyond the Down Low." While I find it well written and his observations often on point, I come away from reading the final paragraph thinking, "So what?"

Really, Boykin has unearthed nothing "new" about sexuality or sexual identity as it has been played out since there have been men, women and the undecided.

Boykin's book gains much of its cachet because it is one of the few published books that addresses sexuality from the perspective of a gay black man. The very paucity of literature that focuses on the plight of gay black men in America alone makes Boykin's contribution invaluable, regardless of the quality of his prose. Ultimately, however, his work is forgettable.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for all black americans.......2005-06-29

I have always admired Keith Boykin as an author. He is very passionate in what he believes in and is not afraid to tell the TRUTH. Every black home in America should have this book.

This pioneering work is the most comprehensive book on Black families in therapy to appear in the clinical literature. It is unprecedented in its attention to the cultural diversity among Black families, its emphasis on the utilization of cultural strengths in therapy, and on its application of the concept of clinical empowerment. Dr. Boyd-Franklin also gives thoughtful attention to the therapist's use of self and the subtleties which are often involved in the treatment process.

Highlighting the diversity among Black Afro-American families, the author's first five chapters explore a number of cultural issues including racism, racial identification, and skin color; extended family patterns and informal adoptions; role flexibility and boundary confusion; religion and spirituality. Numerous case examples provide rich illustrations of these topics. The latter part of the book further explores socioeconomic differences with specific chapters on poor inner-city, single-parent, and middle-class Black families.

An important contribution of this work is its elaboration of the Multisystems Model which allows family therapists to intervene
with Black families at multiple levels including the individual, the family, the extended family, church and community networks, and the social service system. Dr. Boyd-Franklin's clear straightforward presentation of this model will allow the practicing therapist to apply it to even the most complex treatment realities. In addition, this Multisystems Model has applicability to many other ethnic groups and treatment situations.

For training programs that include ethnicity, culture, and the treatment of Black families in their curriculum, this book provides a comprehensive syllabus. It is essential reading for family therapists, psychologists, psychiatrists, social workers, medical practitioners, pastoral counselors, educators, and public agency administrators. For students and practitioners in these fields it provides a scholarly, incisive analysis that sets a standard for ethnicity studies in the therapeutic arena.

Young African-Americans on Self-Discovery and Black Identity

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars This is a great book!!!.......2004-09-16

When I first picked up this book many, many years ago, I did not expect to connect with much of the material, because I did not feel that I identified with American Black culture, even though I am African American myself. I had been struggling with my "mixed-race" identity, feeling slightly out of place in both the White and Black worlds. I was drawn in by the collection of poems and essays in varying voices and perspectives. To my surprise, I found that there were pieces of me in story after story. As well, I began to understand ways of life that had seemed completely foreign to me before. The margins of my book are full of commentary, with certain passages highlighted and triple starred to show just how much they resonated with me. In the years since then, I have recommended this book for use in my alma mater graduate social work program, I have used this book in lectures and presentations about racial identity, and I have recommended it to my Black or "mixed-race" clients who are struggling with who they are and how they fit into the world. I have never read a book that more intimately shows the complexities of being African American, and demonstrates that there is no one definition of Black culture. Whether we are into hip hop or Mozart, from the inner city or the rural Midwest, we all fit in somehow or another through our own self-acceptance.

      Book Description

"Stigma, shame and hardship---this is the lot shared by families whose young men have been swept into prison. Braman reveals the devastating toll mass incarceration takes on the parents, partners, and children left behind."
      -Katherine S. Newman

"Doing Time on the Outside brings to life in a compelling way the human drama, and tragedy, of our incarceration policies. Donald Braman documents the profound economic and social consequences of the American policy of massive imprisonment of young African American males. He shows us the link between the broad-scale policy changes of recent decades and the isolation and stigma that these bring to family members who have a loved one in prison. If we want to understand fully the impact of current criminal justice policies, this book should be required reading."
-Mark Mauer, Assistant Director, The Sentencing Project

"Through compelling stories and thoughtful analysis, this book describes how our nation's punishment policies have caused incalculable damage to the fabric of family and community life. Anyone concerned about the future of urban America should read this book."
      -Jeremy Travis, The Urban Institute

In the tradition of Elijah Anderson's Code of the Street and Katherine Newman's No Shame in My Game, this startling new ethnography by Donald Braman uncovers the other side of the incarceration saga: the little-told story of the effects of imprisonment on the prisoners' families.

Since 1970 the incarceration rate in the United States has more than tripled, and in many cities-urban centers such as Washington, D.C.-it has increased over five-fold. Today, one out of every ten adult black men in the District is in prison and three out of every four can expect to spend some time behind bars. But the numbers don't reveal what it's like for the children, wives, and parents of prisoners, or the subtle and not-so-subtle effects mass incarceration is having on life in the inner city.

Author Donald Braman shows that those doing time on the inside are having a ripple effect on the outside-reaching deep into the family and community life of urban America. Braman gives us the personal stories of what happens to the families and communities that prisoners are taken from and return to. Carefully documenting the effects of incarceration on the material and emotional lives of families, this groundbreaking ethnography reveals how criminal justice policies are furthering rather than abating the problem of social disorder. Braman also delivers a number of genuinely new arguments.

Among these is the compelling assertion that incarceration is holding offenders unaccountable to victims, communities, and families. The author gives the first detailed account of incarceration's corrosive effect on social capital in the inner city and describes in poignant detail how the stigma of prison pits family and community members against one another. Drawing on a series of powerful family portraits supported by extensive empirical data, Braman shines a light on the darker side of a system that is failing the very families and communities it seeks to protect.

      Customer Reviews:

      5 out of 5 stars powerful book.......2004-08-08

It is great to read a book that gives a view into such a marginalized population. The insight Braman brings through his presentation of these real people with complex problems is very powerful.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing stories, great analysis.......2004-08-07

I'd read Braman's other work in books edited by Marc Mauer and Jeremy Travis. This is much more in depth, but presents the same basic arguments. Instead of the tired poltical arguments about the criminal justice system, it tells the stories of actual families. The stories are moving and the families are presented "warts and all." The arguement of the book is that, by undermining family formation and community cohesion, mass imprisonment is actually exacerbating social disorder.

The criminals here are real criminals, not liberal fairy tale versions: They kill people, sell drugs, and steal things. They then get sent to prison while their families and communities pick up the tab.

What makes this book stand out from the crowd of other books on the criminal justice system are the stories of the criminal offenders and their families. What you come to realize is that the criminals are getting off lightly while their families - especially their kids - struggle to survive. It doesn't tie the stories up in a pretty bow. Instead it shows how hard it is to hold criminal offenders accountable.

The plans of Adolf Hitler and the German Nazis to create a Nordic "master race" are often looked upon as a horrific but fairly isolated effort. Less notice has historically been given to the American eugenics movement of the 19th and early 20th centuries. Although their methods were less violent, the methodology and rationale which the American eugenicists employed, as catalogued in Edwin Black's Against the Weak, were chilling nonetheless and, in fact, influential in the mindset of Hitler himself. Funded and supported by several well-known wealthy donors, including the Rockefeller and Carnegie families and Alexander Graham Bell, the eugenicists believed that the physically impaired and "feeble-minded" should be subject to forced sterilization in order to create a stronger species and incur less social spending. These "defective" humans generally ended up being poorer folks who were sometimes categorized as such after shockingly arbitrary or capricious means ! such as failing a quiz related to pop culture by not knowing where the Pierce Arrow was manufactured. The list of groups and agencies conducting eugenics research was long, from the U.S. Army and the Departments of Labor and Agriculture to organizations with names like the "American Breeders Association." Black's detailed research into the history of the American eugenics movement is admirably extensive, but it is in the association between the beliefs of some members of the American aristocracy and Hitler that the book becomes most chilling. Black goes on to trace the evolution of eugenic thinking as it evolves into what is now called genetics. And while modern thinkers have thankfully discarded the pseudo-science of eugenics, such controversial modern issues as human cloning make one wonder how our own era will be remembered a hundred years hence. --John Moe

      Book Description

In War Against the Weak, award-winning investigative journalist Edwin Black connects the crimes of the Nazis to a pseudoscientific American movement of the early 20th century called eugenics. Based on selective breeding of human beings, eugenics began in laboratories on Long Island but ended in the concentration camps of Nazi Germany. Cruel and racist laws were enacted in 27 U.S. states, and the supporters of eugenics included progressive thinkers like Woodrow Wilson, Margaret Sanger, and Oliver Wendell Holmes. Ultimately, over 60,000 "unfit" Americans were coercively sterilized, a third of them after Nuremberg declared such practices crimes against humanity. This is a timely and shocking chronicle of bad science at its worst — with many important lessons for the impending genetic age.

      5 out of 5 stars Bad Blood.......2007-08-10

As a child in grade school in the mid-40s I wondered why our principal (and his preacher friend) were always ranting about 'bad blood' and 'sins of the father' - Edwin Black's book, War Against The Weak, sheds great light on their attitudes and demonstrates how famous, well-intentioned people get sucked into evil notions such as Eugenics and other 'absolutes'. Ideas, no matter how bright and glittery, can lead down
ugly paths and take that evil fork in the road which leads to holocast.
This book should be required reading for every freshman college class.

5 out of 5 stars Chilling, absolutely chilling.......2007-07-23

This book lays out a case, in plain language, that diseased ideas can propogate like wildfire, particularly when powerful people get behind them. Adolf Hitler did not just wake up one day and decide that Jews, homosexuals and the mentally disabled should be killed. That idea had been alive, spreading and in fact exported to Europe by US. This may explain why ships of Jewish refugees were turned back from entrance to this country during the war, eventhough everyone knew they would likely face death. This explains why so many Nazi scientists were welcomed into this country to continue biological research after the war.
But mostly what this well-researched work shows is the importance for standing up for all people and not assuming that any one of us has the right to determine who is fit or unfit to exist.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing and eye-opening.......2007-05-16

This book single-handedly was responsible for opening my eyes to the eugenics movement, and I've been fascinated ever since. It's cited in many of my papers, excellent source, well researched, and an exciting read. Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars An interesting overview.......2007-04-10

This book seems to be a fairly complete overview of the subject. Its one recurring flaw is that the text sometimes reads as if the author believes that he is the first to notice the connections between American (and European) Eugenics and the Nazis. I doubt if the author intended that, but that is still the impression sometimes left.

This is a very readable book, and well-suited for undergraduate use.

5 out of 5 stars War agaisnt the weak, proves that we are no longer weak.......2006-09-27

Edwin Black writes books, that not only move you emotionally, but educate you with page turning energy. This is a book that will not only scare you and tell you about the horrors of what mankind can think of but how this type of horror can become "commonplace" in a society that goes mad. This book is relevant today as never before, as we are facing a crisis of war against the "infidels", which in its own way is a war against the weak, or the politically correct who refuse to acknowlege that we are fighting a war of terror, under the guise of religion, and one party choosing who lives and who dies. This book is well researched, documented, and filled with facts. Bravo to Edwin Black. Now if only the State department could reead this.................
