Strunk would approve.......2007-04-10
This well organized grammar is what it purports to be. Getting a high school student to use it is the trick. To my mind, it doesn't replace "Strunk and White," The Elements of Style: The Original Edition but it does the job.
Good resource!.......2006-08-19
Good resource for writing! Easy to locate topics and easy to understand!
NOT The Only Grammar Book You'll Ever Need.......2006-08-07
If you want information on how/when to use reflexive pronouns (myself, yourself, etc), and when not to use them, this book won't help you whatsoever. It explains what reflexive pronouns are, but says nothing about usage.
Great for young and old.......2005-10-29
Being a native English speaker, my biggest concern about English grammar was during college when I was ensuring that my papers, exams, etc., were good enough to help me pull good grades. It wasn't until I began to pick up other languages, especially Spanish, that English grammar grabbed my attention.
Learning and teaching a foreign language, ironically, forces you to understand your native tongue better; if for no reason other than comparison's sake. I've occasionally used English grammar guides and books, but found Susan Thurman's to be surprisingly approachable. Grammar books often scare people away who are already nervous about learning the nuts and bolts of a language; not this book, though. Two of my favorite sections are, one, where Thurman compares/contrasts commonly confused words (then/than, etc.) and, two, her explanations about punctuation. Her examples are down-to-earth and drive each point home. Plus, it's small and easily portable. For these reasons, I rate this book 5 stars. If you are looking for a desktop reference for more professional needs, this MIGHT not be for you. However, I believe it to be sufficient for 90-95% of the time, depending on your needs. As I add more reviews, I will add one for a complete (though often unnecessary) book on grammar.
Book Title is Correct........2004-12-08
I agree with the book's title. This book just worked out fine for my needs. The language Susan used in this book is simple and easy-to-follow. The example sentences are good and this book covers many common written-English gotchas.

Is it right to kill Satan's hit man? Would it help God's work? This installment in the Left Behind series picks up with Rayford Steele--"believer" and international fugitive--as he struggles with a plan to assassinate Antichrist Nicolae Carpathia. Meanwhile, Carpathia has been busy rebuilding roads, airports, and a cellular/solar satellite phone system--all designed to help him become supreme ruler of the world--and even claim himself to be God. We also find ace reporter Buck Williams anonymously preaching to the masses of believers and converts through his cyberspace magazine The Truth. All the believers in the safe house, including Buck, Doc, Chloe, and Tsion, are suspicious of Hattie--former mistress of Carpathia--who claims to be a believer but may have already compromised their secret location when she tried to buy her way to Europe months before.
Fans of the series won't be disappointed. Jenkins's signature writing is at full force. Readers can count on a suspenseful plot, imaginative futuristic thinking, and familiar characters, all of which appear in the opening pages and are sustained until the last cliffhanger scene when God unleashes another earth-shattering disaster.
Book Description
After selling nearly two million copies since its release in August 1999, Assassins in now availabe in trade paper! The seven-year Tribulation reaches its halfway mark in the sixth book of the blockbuster Left Behind series, Assassins. Nicolae Carpathia is assassinated, setting the stage for the Great Tribulation.
Customer Reviews:
2,5 stars. Better than the rest so far. .......2007-09-27
With the exception of the first book, I've given the Left Behind sequels 1 star, mostly because of the extremely slow pace, where it feels like they took a few chapters and stretched them out to make a whole novel. The other problem is that they are preachy.
Well, "Assassnis" was certainly a step in the right direction. The was some action in the book, not (as in "Apollyon") only 200 pages into the book. "Assassins" was also not as preachy as for example "Soul Harvest".
So it's definitely an improvement. There are still problems though. There's still too much filler material and the book could have been about 50 pages shorter (but that's an imporvement from the other books, which should have been about 250 pages shorter). And the story is moving to slowly. I can't understand why they need to stretch it out into so many volumes.
2.5/5
I should know better.......2007-01-23
I should know better than to write another review for the left behind series. I've taken a real killing in the votes. But, I can help it. I'm enjoying the series. I'm neither a huge critic or supporter of the series. I stayed away from the series for years but now I enjoy it. I don't agree with all of the theology but I am in general agreement.
This book like all the others have been fun fast reads. It isn't great fiction but it is a fun read. If you are looking for indeapth character this series will also bother you. It took several book for me to really empathize with the characters and now that they are going into the second half of the tribulation I still find that the character development is a bit stiff and unconvincing.
There was also poor dialog at several points in this particular book with entire conversations seeming very awkward. One stylistic issue that continues to bother me is long discussion where the dialog goes unattributed. This isn't always a problem but there are times during longer and more complicated conversations when the reader loses tract of who said what.
But, over all this book like the ones before it is a fun read and I recomemnd it for light reading.
Assassins: Assignment: Jerusalem, Target: Antichrist Left Behind #6.......2007-01-04
This is another great book by Tim LaHaye and Jerry Jenkins. I would recommend you keep reading if you haven't read it already, and if you have add it to your collection.
Sadism Unleashed.......2006-12-13
Just as I finished the painful task I've given myself of reading this "popular" fictionalization of the End of Time, I saw an article in the news about a video game version of Left Behind, aimed at the market of teenage boys and young men, indoctrinating them in violence and giving them the false notion that their God would condone their taking judgement into their own hands. Do any of the readers of these books recall Jesus's denunciation of the self-righteous Sadducees in the Temple?
Great Book in the Series.......2006-11-12
I feel that all of these books in the series live up to the hpe, and each has continued to become better than the one before it. I have read all 12, and I would recommend the series to anyone.

Book Description
The parable of the talents says that if I take what I have, and give it to God, unlimited things can happen for others. Is this true and does it work today are questions that are being answered in southern California at the Coast Hills Community Church in a nationally recognized way as they give $100 bills to their church members and send them out to do good.
Customer Reviews:
A More Thought Provoking Chicken Soup for the Soul .......2007-01-23
Warning, this book may stir your heart in ways you did not expect it to! Why? Because it encourages you to give back in proportion to what YOU have been given.
The concept behind this book is to demonstrate one part of living out the Parable of Talents where a master gives 3 different amounts to 3 different servants to be stewards of while he is away. Two of the stewards invest the money the way they believe the master would have willed and earn him a greater return, while the third steward buries the money underground until the master's return. To show some application to this parable, a church pastor gives $100 to 100 members of the congregation (volunteers and a few urged to participate).
The first part of this book describes the intent and details in more depth. It also lists stories of the impact made in a feel good Chicken Soup for the Soul sort of way. The latter part of the book is more discussion of the concept of stewardship.
The greatest part about this book is not the challenge of what you do with YOUR resources; it's the challenge of your perspective on what you do with GOD'S resources that have been entrusted to you. To me, the thing that is most encouraging and thought provoking about this book is that it makes you think about gifts, talents, passions, and resources specific to you. It doesn't tell everyone that they should be doing the same thing. It leaves you with the freedom to give back in proportion to what's been given to you in all aspects of your life - not just money!
The only thing that I felt the book was lacking, was more of the answer to the question, "Why?!" If this were a secular book, the answers given in the "What's in This for You" chapter would be satisfactory. But since this book deals specifically with being a steward of God's gifts to you, I was surprised that it never really presented or emphasized the gospel. The gospel is the answer to the question "Why?" Yes, God is good. Yes, God loves us. But the truth of the matter is, Christ died for our sins and rose from the dead. This is why I would want to be a good steward of the gifts I've been given - because God has always been faithful and has saved me from sin and death. That is the reason why I want to honor Him in how I handle what He's given me. While the book mentions honoring Him for who He is and because He's the King, the fact remains that we've fallen short of the glory of God and no amount of good stewardship can redeem us. Only Christ's blood can. Therefore, good stewardship is really an act of thanksgiving.
For the non-Christian reading this book in a purely social view, it has practicality, and I would still recommend reading it. Society would be immensely helped if people really thought of sharing their gifts with others in need. But in a Christian setting and a Christian book, good stewardship is empty and pointless outside of the gospel.
Overall, this book is fabulous little read! I highly recommend it. I read it over the course of 3 lunch breaks. I encourage you to read it and think about how you've been gifted, and how you can share your gifts with others. This book itself would make a great gift. Enjoy and God bless!
A Book That Captures the Stories of God Inspired Influence .......2006-05-05
This book changed my life. Little did I know I would be accepting a Kingdom Assignment at my church. I read the book and opened my mind and heart and blessed 7 homeless men with a night to remember (i.e., Limousine ride, steak dinner and hockey game). We made a two page feature in the Houston Chronicle (4th largest market in the U.S) and my guys are now my band of brothers. I have since had a chance to meet the authors who have been on Oprah and featured in other national media showcases. The challenge of The Kindgom Assignment is phenomenal. Do a Google Search to see what I mean. Warning! This book will change the way you view your Godly influence and how you manage your talents, treasures and time!
"The Kingdom Assignment".......2006-02-21
I loved this book! "The Kingdom Assignment" is an incredible book that has stretched me out of my comfort zone and given me the more abundant life that Jesus promised us. It reminded me God can use me even more mightily than I could ever have imagined if I just let Him. It showed me how I can use the resources I've got to make an eternal impact on the world, and for that I am grateful! Every Christian should read this book to see how much more they can do to positively impact their world. TWO THUMBS UP!!
Jesus never "paid it forward", He paid it ALL.......2006-02-21
The authors, with the sincerest of intentions, have mostly misunderstood the Parable of the Talents in Matthew 25, thus leading to a clever but misguided handling of financial resources. Handing out thousands of dollars at church meetings betrays impoverished hermeneutics. Why? The Parable of the Talents is not about money!!! Even the book admits this. The Talent in the Parable was a symbol for ALL that God assigns to us, and all that we entrust to Him and do with and for Him in our lives. It's about faithfulness, loyalty, spiritual gifts, availability, prayer, teachability and holiness (among other aspects). Not just money. Make the Talents into real money and you've turned the symbol upside down.
Handing people a $100 bill and telling them, "We'll track you down!" might be humorous, but it's not a biblical lesson in stewardship. The distribution of money -- as if to be complying with the Parable -- strains the Parable beyond its meaning. It overly values the function of money in the Kingdom. Peter said, "Silver or gold have I none, but what I have I give you. In the name of Jesus Christ, walk!"
The Kingdom of God consists in the power of the Holy Spirit. When money is flaunted and tossed around in church, it betrays a lack of creativity. Preachers who need to toss around 100 spots in church are preachers who have run out of sound doctrinal material to preach on. They need a gimmick. Nobody in the Bible, particularly the New Testament church handed out money. The Reformers didn't and nobody did this until Denny Bellesi came along after 2000 years of church history. Does Mr. Bellesi have a new and exclusive revelation from God? Furthermore, God should not be put to the test to multiply the money. The end does not justify the means.
"Kingdom Assignment" is bad hermeneutics. The Kingdom is expanded simply when Christians are faithful with all that God entrusts to us, especially preaching, teaching, and making disciples. Churches need to identify people's gifts and follow that up by assigning people tasks in the body of Christ, in the church. I've had pastors come to me and ask me to lead Sunday School classes and participate in evangelistic projects. But they never came to me with 100 dollar bills. Until now. And Jesus never handed out money to His disciples, even though He had all the resources of the whole world at His disposal. That should be instructive. Jesus didn't "pay it forward" or teach us to pay it forward, as in the cute movie we all enjoyed. No, He paid it all! Our task as His followers is to teach people this fantastic truth. It's not about money. It's all about God! Two thumbs way down!
... because He paid it forward !.......2005-12-23
This little 109 pages inspirational book is a very captivating page-turner. As a Christian you will not read it without being changed or having your paradigm on money and possesions changed. As a non-Christian you will understand the rich meaning of the "Parable of the Talents" (book of Matthew chapter 25 verses 14-30) and what, at the practical level, Christianity is all about and what it means to work for the Kingdom of God.
The closest analogy that I can think of is that this book is the Christian counterpart of the movie "Pay It Forward." Actually the idea behind the "Kingdom Assignment" that pastors Denny and Leesa Bellesi felt compelled to follow, was God's brainchild idea for the church that they served in. The Bellesis were inspired while watching the famed movie in a theatre, and then prayed about the seed that God had planted in their hearts.
The book not only tells the story of that seedy "Kingdom Assignment," but also discusses what Jesus taught about money and possesions. As a result of prayerful consideration, at the beginning of October in 2000, the church handed out $100 dollar bills to 100 people (a mix of volunteers and volunteered members). Then the pastor told them what their assignment is with their individual $100 bills:
1) the money does not belong to you, but it's God's money.
2) one has to use the money to further or to benefit God's Kingdom,
3) in three months all 100 of them were to come back and tell the church how they had put the $100 in God's service.
I will not spoil the results for you, but I will mention that this real event and the aftermath has been covered by Dateline, People magazine, and the Associated Press from which many national newspapers carried the story.
You will be inspired to always help your neighbor, in good and bad, and to think of material possesions and non-material talents as something to use, manage, and be a stewart of for God's Kingdom and the well-being of fellow mankind.

Very good nclex review "add-on" material to accompany any nclex review books. highly recommended. I rate it only 4 stars because there's are more topics to be discussed with prioritation, delegations etc on real nclex test.
book purchase.......2007-02-14
i was pleased with the product, i got what i ordered, it arrived on time, and it was brand new, still packaged-I have no complaints.
Helpful for NCLEX-RN Review.......2006-08-05
This concise and practical book contains exercises that help the reader focus on the prioritization content of the NCLEX exam. Most of the recent NCLEX test takers with whom I have spoken have seen a big emphasis on these types of questions on their exams. I would say that 35%-40% of my questions on the NCLEX exam had a prioritization emphasis, so this book was a great supplement to my studies.

Crucial .......2007-02-16
I can't encourage you enough to know the information in this book. There are even forms in the back for you to use when billing people. The last time I brought my invoice to someone they responded about how professional it was. Read this before you start making mistakes that will become very costly to you and your business!
great resource.......2006-11-10
This book was invaluable in the pricing process. It includes guides that most other books of this kind do not. For example, guides for how to calculate your annual overhead in order to take it into account with the pricing of every job. Great book, and I'm sure it will come in handy when it comes to pricing stock images.
great book.......2006-05-21
The only book you may ever need in general stock & assignment photography pricing. This is my conclusion after buying several books. Other books discuss the business but left the pricing. So this topic become "mysterious" for most photographers starting their business. Well thought and the authors are not afraid explaining their ideas in details. Very useful and serves as reference whenever you need it.
For specific subject combine with other book. E.g for nature photography business, combine this book with John Shaw's Nature Photography Business.
an invaluable guide for photographers.......2003-12-07
An invaluable guide for photographers providing information on pricing, negotiation and business behavior with clients, A very good book
An essential book for pro and would-be pro photographers.......2003-04-30
I'm called a veteran photographer these days, but I learned a lot from the newest edition of this book. It's easy to forget expenses when estimating or billing, and the book shows you how to avoid such pitfalls. There are many new stock uses relating to the web etc. and I now have a basis for pricing such uses. If you are starting out, read the book carefully, it's as good an introduction to the business end of photography -- that is of course about making money -- as you will get. If you know a photo student, give it to him or her as a graduation present. Highly reccommended.

A Great Guide to 'What's Normal' in the Pentagon.......2007-09-04
A great book, highly recommended for anyone working in the Pentagon! I'm in my first Pentagon tour, and found this book immensely useful. My initial impression of Pentagon life was professional bewilderment: totally new vocabulary, totally new set of concerns, different rules for doing business. Much more so than with most of my 'new' jobs along the way, this one totally threw me off with with respect to the norms and expectations.
There are many courses for navigating these strange waters (most of which I've attended), but there's so much to learn that these courses are primarily focused on the "What Is It, and How Does It Work?" level. The "What's normal?" level is usually left off the end (due to time constraints), for the student to work out on his/her own. I've been blessed with very patient bosses, and have been allowed to work out 'normal' for myself, but I frequently had so many questions that I'd hesistate asking them all at once. And then came Assignment Pentagon - a life saver.
I stumbled across Assignment Pentagon about three months into the job - 2-1/2 months too late! Once I started reading it, I couldn't put it down - it spoke to my nagging questions and left me a MUCH better informed Action/Requirements Officer. The turn-around in professional understanding was so profound for me that I've been recommending it to anyone else that checks in here, and think it's absolutely critical to understand the place you work in the depth that Assignment Pentagon delivers it.
Many thanks to the authors for putting this much-needed work together, and for keeping it updated. I only hope that they're still updating it when I've got my next set of orders to the Pentagon.
Some Interesting Insights.......2007-04-21
This book was first published in the 1980s, and has been apparently revised as recently as March 2007. The edition I read comes from 2002. The book is interesting. It fulfills its billing as a straight guide to what is important inside the big five-sided building along the Potomac River.
Maj Gen Smith's most interesting piece of insight comes about half way through in his discussion of the media and the Pentagon leadership. In discussing the role of the daily "Early Bird" news roundup, Gen Smith asserts that senior Pentagon leaders read the volume diligently, seeing the press not as an antagonist, but rather as a source of new and interesting takes on what they may or may not already know.
Unfortunately, Gen Smith has a bad habit of occasionally interjecting his personal opinion into his otherwise objective analysis. Also, even though the book says it was revised for 2002, it appears that many sections of the book have not been updated since its original publication 15 years earlier.
All in all, this is a solid, brief overview, of some of what goes through Pentagon employees heads on a daily basis. It is worth the read for that reason if for no other.
up to date guide to thriving within a large organization.......2002-02-26
I am the author of this book. When the new administration took office, it was time to update this book about how the Pentagon works, how to work with the Pentagon and how to work within the Pentagon. There is an enormous amount of misinformation about the Pentagon and what I have tried to do is stick to the realities and to destroy some of the myths. I have received many comments about this book. The most surprising ones have come from people who work in corporations who have told me that this book has given them lots of ideas about how improve their performance in their present jobs.

For Serious Freelance Writers only!.......2007-07-04
Jenna is a great thought leader in this difficult, thrilling industry. She gives practical advice for those who want to make a real business out of writing. I get a lot of queries about how I stay in business--and I refer people to her book!
What References . . . .......2007-07-01
. . . do I rely on? Over and over again, I've been asked which books I turn to time and time again for reference. I can't believe I have talked about this book on here yet - I've been raving about it all over the Internet ever since its release. So, here I am, a bit late with a lot to say.
When it comes to venturing through the freelance writing world, it's not uncommon to take the first step with fear and a sort of sick feeling in your gut. You want to feel secure, want answers to all the hard questions, and you want your hand held. Well, Jenna's done all of that in this guide.
Don't let how slim this guide fool you at all. It isn't because it's lacking material, information and resources. On the contrary, it's bursting at the seams with everything a freelance writer needs to run a successful business. The key is that there's no fluff. Sure, there's a LOT of humor and personal experiences injected in just the right places. You won't find a lot of useless information just thicken the book up, though.
When I first started my business in 1999, I searched HIGH and LOW for an all-in-one reference to guide me through the process and never coule really find what I was looking for. Now, when I come across new writers in search of the same thing, I direct them to this book. And, each time they've talked to me about what they've learned from reading and USING this book, they've raved about how glad they were to have it right from the beginning.
Sharp, practical advice from an insider who knows.......2007-02-21
Want to be a freelance writer? Jenna Glatzer tells you the truth about the business in a conversational, factual, no-nonsense style sprinkled with her warm personality and humor. She lays out the writer's path and bids you to take the first steps.
After reading so many books on writing that don't deliver on the promises they make, Jenna's book is refreshingly honest and practical. If I were teaching a course on writing, I'd make sure every student had her book.
Make a Real Living as a Freelance Writer is great for novices and veterans. She surprises you with solid tips on researching and using the internet to full advantage. Her book takes the fear out of an often imposing business and reminds one that writing is compelling fun.
