Book Description

In the late 1960s, Eliot Wigginton and his students created the magazine Foxfire in an effort to record and preserve the traditional folk culture of the Southern Appalachians. This is the original book compilation of Foxfire material which introduces Aunt Arie and her contemporaries and includes log cabin building, hog dressing, snake lore, mountain crafts and food, and "other affairs of plain living."

4 out of 5 stars Reliving the Past.......2007-09-04

If you are interested in learning how our forefathers lived without the modern day conveniences that we enjoy today, this book is a must read. You will learn how they survived without much income and you could learn something beneficial that you never knew.

5 out of 5 stars PROBABLY ONE OF THE BEST IN THIS GENRE.......2007-03-26

The Foxfire books are a wonderful thing and we are so lucky to have them. Many of the ways, crafts, planting lore, animal lore, and as the book says "affairs of plain living" are preserved here. This particular volume includes different wood and it's uses, Mountain Recipes, Slaughtering Hogs, weather signs faith healing and so very, very much more. this is a wonderful recording of life the way it was and probably never will be again. The book is quite well written and has faithfully recorded even the dialect of these wonderful people, from which so many of us sprung. That is a big part of the charm of these works. This book includes actual interviews with folks from that region of the country which I am sure are long dead now. Their knowledge would be completely lost without works such as this. Another generation or two and it will all be completely gone. Thank goodness we have recordings such as this. Recommend this one highly.

1 out of 5 stars NO IDEA what they're saying.......2007-01-18

I heard about this book and thought, "OH I'm from the South and this book will be lovely to read to find out about how things used to be." And I would probably have been right if I could have made out what they were talking about. The slang is much too thick for me. I'm not sure anyone could understand it except people who actually are from this region. Thumbs down for no translation.

5 out of 5 stars buy it and use it.......2006-06-18

Don't get me wrong the entire series is amazing. Book one is the best and one of the more practical. The chapter on log cabin building was my inspiration to build my own cabin. At least 75% of the cabin was directions from this very book. Reading a Foxfire (any of them) does something to you that's hard to explain. I think of Foxfire books as almost a self-help guide that teaches you how to slow down for a minute. I recommend this book for anybody with high blood pressure or some kind of anxiety problem. It's therapeutic. These students met some really neat people of Appalachia. We can't let this way of life fade away as it almost has in my hometown, Knoxville.

5 out of 5 stars An incredible resource of "oldtimer" wisdom.......2006-04-15

I've inherited the first seven, origional print books from my dad, and bought 8 and 9 for myself just a year ago, and I must say that I've always enjoyed reading these books. The people who contributed their knowledge & wisdom to these books are a resource that has largely been lost to us, and it's a shame that more of us don't realize the wisdom that is missing in this world with the deaths of these oldtimers (as the books were written in the 70's primarily).

I rate this book right up there with Carla Emery's books, as a great resource for folks trying to get back to a more self-sufficient way of life and providing for themselves, their families, and even friends & neighbours. These books definitely give a sense of old-fashioned camaraderie and willingness to help your neighbour in time of need (and in times of plenty).

4 out of 5 stars Useful book.......2007-07-18

Very good book. Basically made me realise I was biting off more than I could chew - think I'll try a garage first! I kept on hearing from log building forums how cheap it was to build a log house, it was sobering to hear from an expert that this might not necessarily be the case. Made me approach this idea a bit more rationally.

5 out of 5 stars extremely informative.......2007-05-01

It is obvious to me that log construction is more than just a craft. I was not aware how fast things are changing in the art of log construction. The author seems to be on the cutting edge of log building technology. There is a lot to more to know before you start your own log home than I was aware of. I am now going into it with a much greater understanding of the process than I had before. I will start mine this summer. It will be beautiful. thank you Robert.

5 out of 5 stars Log Construction Manual.......2007-04-10

This is without a doubt, the finest book on the topic. Prior to purchasing this book, one complete shelf of my bookcase was taken up by books on the topic. While some are enjoyable to read and / or present great photos, I could have filled the "hands on" and technical side of such construction with this book. During my first few readings of the book (and I continue to read it) I kept asking myself "why didn't anyone else think of that" or something along the lines of "really glad I didn't build before reading this book or I'd have been in trouble". I've been lucky enough enough to exchange a few personal e-mails with Mr Chambers and can vouch for the fact that he really cares for the craft. This is not an example of someone simply after your dollar. Do yourself a favour, start with this book. You'll be glad that you did.

5 out of 5 stars Log Construction Manual.......2007-02-11

The best book I have read on the topic. This author is very detail oriented. I implemented the information imedeately into my cabin construction project. If you are planning on building, this is a must read.

I read this and realized something. This guy knows everything about log homes but hey I don't want to live in a dark wooden box. Moved on to timber frame.

3 out of 5 stars Information regarding building a cabin or house........2007-09-29

This book had all the information regarding building, purchasing land, forming the foundation, getting contractors, - everything necesary to start a home from nothing. While containing all the information I needed, it informed me I am not willing to go through this much work to get my own house. I would rather purchase a pre-built home.

5 out of 5 stars The Best!.......2007-03-12

I GOT THIS BOOK FOR MY SON, FROM THE LIBRARY, AND HE LIKED IT SO MUCH THAT HE WANTED TO 'HIGHLITE' SO MANY THINGS. I ORDERED IT FOR HIM AS HE IS INTERESTED IN BUILDING A LOG HOUSE, BUT THEN HE FOUND A 6 YR. OLD LOG HOUSE, BUT THIS BOOK HAD ADVISED HIM AS TO THE BEST TYPE OF TIMBERS, AND MANY OTHER THINGS. HE WAS ABLE TO ASK QUESTIONS OF THE OWNER THAT HE WOULD NEVER HAVE THOUGHT ABOUT WITHOUT THE WONDERFUL INFORMATION IN THIS BOOK.

1 out of 5 stars Not very good or inspiring.......2004-03-15

This book is not for anyone who wants to build there own log home. It is clearly written from someone who wants to continually sell log home kits. There is a wonderful book called Home from the Woods that is much better and describes the details of building a log home from an everyday persons perspective.

3 out of 5 stars Biased but good.......2003-12-18

This is a very good book if your intention is to be your own general contractor, or even hire a general contractor to build your log home. The author (as noted in many other reviews) shows a bias towards milled kit homes since that's what he sells.

Since I am planning to build my own log home from scratch (not using a kit) I found the bias a little annoying, but I still found a few good pieces of advice here and there. If you are planning to build it yourself from scratch I would recommend taking the two-day seminar from loghomebuilders.org instead, or in addition to this book.

4 out of 5 stars Best book on the subject (but milled kit bias).......2003-02-19

This is the best book currently available on the subject of log home construction planning. It is well-organized, clearly written, and offers helpful information to anyone who is planning on building a log home. The reason it gets four stars instead of five is that some statements in the book must be read with your thinking cap on...The author is a milled log kit seller, so he shows a subtle (and sometimes not so subtle) bias against handcrafted homes, build-it-yourselfers, and the like. Of course, every salesman believes that his own product is the best- so who can fault him...just take in the book with a "grain of salt" and remember to think for yourself.

5 out of 5 stars Made my first quilt!.......2006-12-01

I have never taken a quilting class but made my first quilt using this book! The instructions are easy to follow and the photographs clearly illustrate step-by-step how to proceed. She tells you exactly how much fabric you need once you decide the size quilt you want to make and how many blocks are necessary. I had not been excited about the log cabin pattern, but when I saw all the different ways the blocks could be arranged, I developed an interest. I have four small children under the age of 8 and began my quilt in August so that it would hopefully be completed by Christmas. Much to my surprise,I finished it (about 70"x70") in a month! I would recommend this book to any beginning quilter.

5 out of 5 stars A great place to start dreaming.......2006-08-12

This was the first log home book my wife and I purchased after making the decision to not settle for any old house on the market and to build our dream home. It was a great way to get the ideas flowing. I appreciate the layout of the book: lots of exterior and interior photos, floor plans to put the photos into perspective, text descriptions of the houses, and great side bars on everything from windows to roofs to heating. The photos and descriptions are inspiring while the floor plans and side bars are practical. Buy this book early in the process and continue to refer to it as your design comes together.

5 out of 5 stars A MUST HAVE FOR LOG HOME BUILDERS!!.......2006-02-23

My husband and I are in the preliminary stages of planning our dream log home. There are many pricey books out there to peruse, but none were as helpful as this one. It helped us to understand construction and budgetary compliance. By planning with this book, we curbed our budget, without compromising quality and beauty. The information was easy to digest and the photos were excellent and instrumental in the implementation of design and decorating. This book is definitely a MUST HAVE for anyone who is planning to build a log home.

5 out of 5 stars I found a plan.......2004-05-15

I bought this early on in the planning stage of our log cabin as a resouce. After looking through dozens of books and magazines I actually used one of the plans in the book after modifying it slightly. This has many plans that give you some great ideas and has enough difference between them to be a nice starting point in the design process.

AUTHORBIO: Born and raised in Bern, Switzerland, Barbara now lives with her husband, Ueli, in Mettmenstetten, a rural village halfway between Zurich and Lucerne."Log Cabin with a Twist" is Barbara's first book about quiltmaking. REVIEW: You may not recognise the traditional log cabin pattern when you see it made up, but this book will give you careful instructions on how to create the impressive looks seen in many art quilts. Not for the beginner - but opens up many ideas and options for a little more experienced quilter.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic book!!!!!.......2007-08-08

I found the book to be even more than I expected. The pictures and description doesn't do it justice. I'm not a fan of paper-piecing, but this book has got me very interested in trying it. smarlow

4 out of 5 stars Endless possibilities.......2006-11-11

Four stars because I don't happen to like many of the examples of actual quilts, and perhaps that's because they reflect a Swiss / German origin and are a trifle too formal for my taste. Elsewise, this is a fabulous book. Found it at the library, tried to take notes, and decided it was worth owning because I'd never be able to harvest all the ideas. As might be expected from the origin, the instructions are thorough and clear. I don't happen to need them; I want ideas, not steps. YMMV.

The larger point: the basic log cabin block presents an almost endless number of ways to play with color both within the block and within the finished work. Adding the twist, and then varying the starting shape, and then mixing the blocks (different starting shapes within the same finished work) essentially squares the # of colorway options available to the textile worker.

This book contains enough examples of finished quilts to give you an idea of what can be done with the shapes. Each finished quilt is accompanied with a line drawing of the pieces so you can work out your own colorways.

I like infinite possibilities. Now to find the time to play with them all...

5 out of 5 stars Log Cabin with a TWIST by Barbara T Kaempfer.......2006-03-25

What a fantastic array of options this book evokes. You too will want to get out the fabric and start trialling different ways of producing Log Cabin blocks that enhance the fabrics chosen and excite the eye. The possibilities seem endless and will lead the Log Cabin enthusiast to new levels of decision making and creativity.

4 out of 5 stars A challenge.......2005-09-24

This book has some very challenging techniques and quilts. The opportunity to be exceptionally creative is there if you wish or you can follow a pattern as shown and create a very personal quilt. I have really enjoyed reading through it and look forward to using it to create. It is not for the beginner nor for those who are afraid of color.

5 out of 5 stars Log Cabin with a Twist.......2005-08-30

I purchased this book having seen Bonnie demonstrate the twisted log cabin and just fell in love with it. I have been searching for a log cabin pattern for quite sometime and just happened to tune into Simply Quilting show on tv and saw the different patterns that are displayed in this book. The colored photos and instructions are very easily understood. This is a must have book.

Book Description

The cabin is perhaps the most iconic of American structures, harkening back to colonial and pioneer days. They recall a time before cell phones and email, evoking images of cozy fireplaces and quiet contemplation. For many, the cabin also summons forth images of logs and plaid, plank floors and lofted beds. The Cabin Book offers a wonderful variety of forms and explores the most innovative designs in cabin architecture. Once rustic and simple, the cabin is now comfortable and chic, putting owners in the heart of the wilderness while providing comfort and beauty so they can get away in style.
Among the 25 cabins included is a little-known Wisconsin cabin designed by Frank Lloyd Wright; an upstate Michigan log cabin designed by renowned architect Anthony Belluschi; and a one-room "urban" cabin in Portland, Oregon. One couple designed a cabin-all on one floor-without the use of right angles. Whether ensconced in glass or surrounded by an enormous porch, these cabins speak of personal style, perfect for the rugged or the sybaritic.
Like cottages, the cabin is one of the most popular house styles, since it is small enough to be inexpensive and easy to maintain. Everyone dreams of an idyllic retreat, and this book showcases its best examples.

• Rich, warm, relaxed, natural—Adirondack camps, Western lodges, much more • Glowing photos of dozens of unique rustic homes from across North America • Spotlights craftspeople and creative forces in construction and décor • Great idea book for anyone looking to design or decorate a primary or second home

Used to be that "rustic" meant a dusty, dumpy cabin in the woods. No more! Rustic Revisited reveals today's rustic—contemporary design that celebrates the honesty of all-natural, local materials such as wood, twig, stone, and bark. Rustic structures often have the same finish on the exterior and the interior—for example, rough-hewn timber on both the outside and inside. The homes in Rustic Revisitedembrace the hand-crafted philosophy of rustic and show how to take that philosophy to new heights in a variety of styles, from the Adirondack camp to the Western lodge to the classic log cabin. Thirty unique homes, most planned by architects or interior designers, are showcased here, each lavishly photographed to allow readers exclusive access to interiors, exteriors, and noteworthy details in unusual rustic houses from New York to California, from Montana to Ontario, from North Carolina to Minnesota. These homes cover the full spectrum of rustic—renovations and new construction, traditional and cutting edge. A bonus chapter on decoration spotlights the craftspeople who are the creative forces of the movement.

What a great book! I bought it to give as a gift and ended up keeping it for myself. It's filled with beautiful photos of rustic style in all its forms: including Adirondack camps, lake houses in Wisconsin, Western lodges and Southern cottages just to name a few. I got many good ideas from it, and will be buying more copies to give to friends. I highly recommend it.

Book Description

Henry Louis Gates Jr. redefines Uncle Tom's Cabin with this seminal interpretation of the great American novel.

Declared worthless and dehumanizing by James Baldwin in 1949, Uncle Tom's Cabin has lacked literary credibility for fifty years. Now, in a ringing refutation of Baldwin, Henry Louis Gates Jr. demonstrates the literary transcendence of Harriet Beecher Stowe's masterpiece. Uncle Tom's Cabin, first published in 1852, galvanized the American public as no other work of fiction has ever done. The editors animate pre-Civil War life with rich insights into the lives of slaves, abolitionists, and the American reading public. Examining the lingering effects of the novel, they provide new insights into emerging race-relation, women's, gay, and gender issues. With reproductions of rare prints, posters, and photographs, this book is also one of the most thorough anthologies of Uncle Tom images up to the present day. 2-color throughout; 32 pages of color illustrations, 150 black-and-white illustrations.

3 out of 5 stars Too many notes.......2007-09-17

This is a moving, important, and captivating novel that easily stands on its own. The annotations, while helpful when expounding upon literal and historical references, are otherwise largely uninformative. As a previous reviewer noted, the tone is often quite personal and immaterial ( "my eyes glazed over" etc.) One passage being referred to as being eye-glazingly boring and superfluous was in fact quite brilliant and necessary for insight into one of the more complex and fully realized characters in the novel ( Augustine St. Clare). I don't feel the editors' job is to instruct the reader when to be disinterested. The editors also have a tendency to give away key plot points throughout, which did not endear them to this reader. They also fixate on odd themes that seem overindulgent, such as what they consider to be Shelby's oral fixations, which seem to me to be nothing more than the daily pastimes of a southern gentleman of leisure, i.e. eating and smoking. They can go out of their way to belabor points such as these.
The tone of some of the comments are also startlingly informal, as in "George is a little too talky here." Talky???????? That wouldn't even pass in an eighth grade English paper. Not to mention that George, at this point in the novel, is under great duress and making an impassioned stand for his belief and his survival. Talky. Harumph.
So skip the notes, but by all means devour the story. It is worth it.

4 out of 5 stars excellent background but read the novel first.......2006-11-24

John Updike reviews this new edition in the Nov 6 New Yorker, which is available online and well worth looking up. With 100 pages to go, Updike tired of the "irritable sniping from the sidelines" and switched to the standard Library of America edition.

A few months ago I reviewed the Penguin edition of Uncle Tom's Cabin here in Amazon. I suggested that if you decide to read the novel, skip the Introduction until you are done reading, because it gives away several plot points that you are better off encountering for yourself directly.

The same applies to this new annotated edition I think. The novel is not so difficult that you can't simply read it through on your own. I suggest doing that first, in a standard edition, then going through this edition. Otherwise you are having only a mediated experience of the work. In other words, let the work stand or fall on its own merits first, before exposing yourself to the opinions of others about it.

Having read the standard edition earlier I then read this annotated edition "inside out". That is, I read the introductory chapters and the annotations themselves straight through and used Stowe's text as the reference. This is a better approach I think than trying to read the text for the first time with the annotations nearby, where they do intrude and interrupt the flow of the story.

When reading the annotations this way though you do notice the inconsistency in voice that Updike mentions. Most are carefully neutral but you get an occasional first-person remark like "I confess my eyes glazed over" (gee that's helpful), then "again, our eyes glaze over" or "I recall Baldwin's...". Or "I am close to turning the page." then "...bore us silly", in the same annotation. As if the two editors read, and experienced eye-glaze, in unison? Since there seems to be two distinct voices at play it would have been useful for each annotation to have been initialed by its author, Gates or Robbins. I started trying to guess which editor wrote which annotation--I suspect Robbins provided the majority of the historical background while Gates did the Baldwins, the "I"s, and the trendier ones ("To the modern reader, Adolph is unmistakably 'metrosexual'"). This disparity in tone is also obvious between Gates' public interview (Boston Globe, Nov 12) in which he too-casually terms the work racist, and the less judgmental and more nuanced approach of the majority of the annotations themselves.

Getting past that though the annotations contain a wealth of useful background. The Biblical references, the distinctions among the slaves, the nuances of hypocrisy, the literary conventions, the sheer mechanics of the business, the conventional wisdom of the time about the races, all are excellent and thorough.

So, if you are going to read Uncle Tom's Cabin, do so first, then get this edition. It's an indispensable addition to the work.

5 out of 5 stars Book was a major money saver.......2007-04-11

I bought this book used on Amazon and found it to be extremely helpful. Granted, my boat is not a yacht and most of the wood/deck repair leaned toward Yachts. I still found this to be extremely helpful in repairing my bimini top, an refurbishing all the upholstery. I would have spent 3 times as much money on cleaners if I had not read this book.

1 out of 5 stars unfortunately.......2007-01-05

Amazon asked me for a review of this book. I am grateful to Amazon but it would be better for them if they could send me the book. It has been more than 6 months and I still did not receive the book.

5 out of 5 stars Good, salfe cleaning.......2006-08-31

This book has wonderful ideas about using commonly available items such as witch hazel and petroleum jelly to clean and maintain your boat. Our dock neighbors were so impressed at the cleaning ability of the concoctions this book recommends that everyone now has a squirt bottle of the stuff for their boats. Highly recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Not only saves time, Saves Money.......2006-08-18

My first experience was with the deck wash. The stuff that I was using cost about $10 per bottle. The deck wash that I made from the book worked just as well and it cost me under a dollar to make. I haven't even gone in depth yet.

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2006-03-20

Excellent read, many money saving tips, really appreciate the fact many of the recommendations are organically based and non harmful to the environment.
