5 out of 5 stars The Joys of Macrame.......2007-09-29

It's such a wonderful book, I couldn't put it down as it was more than I expected and it demonstrate so clearly how easy it is to produce pretty pieces of jewelry from these knots. They are so versatile and when combined with Chinese knotting techniques, produced very unique pieces for me.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring and easy to follow.......2007-06-12

While googling around to find some inspiration for my new found interest micro-macramé I found Joan Babcock's site. And I was in awe! So naturally, when I found out she had written a book on the subject I had to have it.

The book consists of three parts: basic info on nine basic knots, tools and materials; projects and a part with tips on how to end a macramé piece, calculate the lenght of threads needed etc. The middle section includes all in all ten project ranging from earrings to necklaces in different micro-macramé and cavandoli techniques. Some with just a few beads, others with more. Very colourful and very modern, far for the 70's and black or beige hemp.

The pages in the book are in black and white. While I at first felt something was lost with the b&w photos of the finished projects, I found that all the projects were featured in full colour on the cover. So I can still get a good look at how they are supposted to turn out. I does mean I flip between the pages and the cover though. As for the illustrations, also in b&w, I find they are very well made with great detail and I find that they are at least just as good as step-by-step photos. In fact, they are better as you are not distracted by details and colours unlike in photos. I guess a person used to photo directions might feel a bit at loss in the beginning, but this type of illustrations are just positive as far as I see it.

The book starts from the basic and does a very good job describing the techniques for beginners. But I think a total newbie might want to try some of the simple projects you can find online or in Bead & Buttons booklet first. Joan Babcock's projects can perhaps feel a bit daunting otherwise. But I dare say this is still a very good book for everyone interested in this type of jewellery making. I'm very satisfied with my purchase!

5 out of 5 stars finally a great micro macrame book.......2007-03-23

I have been a student of the white swan beading school of micromacrame for years. This book was sent from heaven. Great projects and clear instructions. This is a fabulous method of beading. It is refreshing to have some new projects to make. Keep them coming.

3 out of 5 stars Too expensive for black and white book!!.......2007-02-07

Tis book has poor images or almost no color images at all. The step by step solutions are made with black and white poor drawings wich leave so many doubts in the process because they are not very detayled. As the process goes on the above situations are represented in a very stylised way. Too expensive for the information included.

5 out of 5 stars Mini macrame jewelry.......2007-02-06

Ms Babcock's book is a welcome change from the old "clunky" type macrame. I am a jewelry beader who has also done macrame in the past. Being able to blend this micro macrame with jewelry designs is so much fun! It has "jump started" my creative juices to do designs of my own using both beads and macrame. The directions in the book are very complete, resulting in your end product being just like what is pictured in the book. I recommend this book to beaders and macrame artists as well.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Not for personal use.......2007-05-17

This is not what I was looking for. This is a Book for someone who is putting in hydro for a small town or village, not a personal use.

    4 out of 5 stars Good book.......2007-01-03

This is a good book if you want to know about the basics of micro-hydro. But if you want something more especific try another.

4 out of 5 stars VERY GOOD BOOK FOR A BEGINNER OR FOR A DESIGNER OF SMALL PLANTS.......2006-03-10

I'm a civil engineer involved in the design of large hydropower plants.
This book is a complete guide on the design of a micro-hydropower scheme, particularly well suited if the scheme is located in a developing country.
The books cover all subjects ranging from the preliminary studies to the final design of the civil works and of the EM equipment to the maintenance works.
It is well written and full of photos and examples.
Please buy it if you're involved in the design of small hydropower.
The only small suggestion I can do to the author is to introduce some more calculation examples.

5 out of 5 stars A most concise and integral reference on MH applications.......2000-02-23

This highly rated manual, covers just about every practical and tangible theoretical introduction to the full design and/up to implementation cycle of MH projects, all in about 370 pages. It is important that it was written and amply illustrated not only with detailed schematics, but also with actual pictures from original installations in developing countries, which makes a viable aid in comprehending the "actual picture". The chapters covered detail a syllabus in: Components and Design of an MH Scheme, Cost benefit estimations, Hydrology and site survey, Flow prediction, Civil works and operational parts (all aspects from Weirs to Penstocks), Commercial engineering, Turbines (including reverse pumps), Governing, Drive systems, a very thorough presentation of the -cumbersome- Electrical Power System aspects, along with Operational, Maintenance, Financial and Commissioning aspects. Should there be something more for an engineer to wish for, would be more info on turbines -something you would expect to find in a specialized book on the subject anyway. The book should provide a valuable asset not only to MH engineers, but to Renewable Energy Technology engineers as well, since it is progressively becoming apparent that a combination of RET along with Pumped Storage and MH, presents a highly attractive opportunity for both developed and developing countries

    5 out of 5 stars Superb work, Nobel-Prize worthy.......1998-09-29

The insight given in this book is, without a doubt, beneficial not just to mankind, but also and especially developing countries. I highly recommend.

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Be careful about what you wish for.......2007-09-06

This is a very enchanting book, but I think the reader would be wise to take it with a grain of salt. The author makes a list of vegetables sound so good your mouth starts to water. Food literally comes to life. One farm has world class leafy lettuce. Another has miraculous tomatoes. A third has peppers for every taste. A fourth makes wool as smooth as silk.

On the other hand, some of the stories are fanciful at best. For example, there is the story of the 'good' coyote. A farmer takes pity on a limping coyote and offers it some food. The standard practice in the neighborhood was to shoot coyotes on sight, but this coyote touches the farmer somehow. The coyote mends. Once recovered, the coyote decides the farmer is 'one of the pack' and his chickens are 'his things'. Thus, she identifies the farmer's chickens as off limits and protects them from other coyotes, raccoons, and varmints. I've got chickens and cohabitate with coyotes. The idea of a coyote protecting the farmer's hens was good for a hearty laugh.

Another story concerns the 'good weed'. This story is part of section on letting plants restore soil depleted of essential trace minerals. The idea is that plants can concentrate trace minerals deep in the soil and deposit them on the surface. In this context, we meet the good thistle. The good thistle pulls out trace minerals out of the stony soil, then dies out as the soil returns to health. I had another good laugh with this story. In some ways there is truth in it, but let me tell you about my thistles. They are beautiful. Every year my soil gets better. I haven't noticed them dying out, though. Maybe next year!

Finally, there is the story of the weak plant calling out to nearby insects to end it's suffering. This theme is repeated numerous times. I guess it is the story of the 'good' bad insect. You see, those worms and beetles are not just eating any plant, they are consuming the suffering plant. I'm not going to argue that nature has a way of maintaining balance, but I had to laugh. I guess those squirrels that entirely consumed 3 trees of gorgeous, plump, red organic peaches were simply answering the peach trees cries of distress! I should have known!

If you want to grow your own food, more power to you. Don't be surprised if Mother Nature throws you a few curve balls along the way, though. Don't count on coyotes to protect your chickens, nor thistles to conveniently disappear.

Finally, Ms. Adams never mentions the local banker or tax man, which seems odd. I've never met a farmer that doesn't have something to say about these friendly folks.

5 out of 5 stars Educational and Inspiring.......2007-03-09

If you've ever dreamed of having a small, productive farm but didn't know where to begin or how to creatively make money and have fun at the same time, this book is The Source for you. Barbara Berst Adams' "Micro Eco-Farming" is loaded with great ideas, sensible how-to information and strategies for starting, maintaining and expanding an environmentally friendly mini farm. The breadth of her knowledge is impressive. She obviously understands every aspect of small-scale farming from raising livestock and poultry to growing specialty herbs, flowers and vegetables. This is a practical handbook and a solid reference you will always want to keep on hand. It has earned a permanent place in my library.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Resource for anyone wanting to get into agriculture.......2007-03-09

This is a must have book for anyone wanting to get more for less out of their garden, farm, or acreage. I loved it and found it interesting and informative. It'll stay on my shelf long after I pass it around to all of my friends and family! Bravo! The world would be a better place if more people read and would take to heart the message this book brings.

5 out of 5 stars Make your dream come true.......2006-10-26

It has been my long-time dream to have a house in a rural place with a few acres and a cash crop. With this dream in mind, I read
"Micro Eco-Farming" by Barbara Berst Adams. It is a wonderful book. Besides great suggestions for types of small farm or backyard businesses that lend themself to success, the many real examples bring the possibilities to life. But, there is much more. The book describes how to go about setting up a small eco-business, why and how each one works, and how the benefits of such an endeavour go far beyond just cash. Of special interest to me is practical ways to make the most of a very small gardening plot or space. I don't have land yet (I'm still in a condo in a small city), but there was one tip that I used immediately. It was using trace minerals to help plants flourish, with sometimes dramatic results. I use trace minerals for my personal health, but never thought about my houseplants needing the same. This makes total sense, and I have just started adding trace minerals to their water! I thoroughly enjoyed reading Barbara's delightful book and can hardly wait until I get my
own small plot of land to make use of the wisdom she conveys through her own experience and that of others. I could almost taste the strawberries, smell the hay, and hear the sounds of the birds as I read her book. Ahhh.

5 out of 5 stars Recommended reading ...I was not disappointed!.......2006-08-23

It made sense to me that I first saw this book recommended by the National Gardening Association. After all, some of the farms described in it successfully operate from backyard gardens and even urban lots. Later I saw that Rodale's New Farm magazine recommended it with the following quote:

"The author continually returns to the concept of the "whole farm," where each part integrates with the whole in a mutually beneficial relationship--from the animals, to the insects, to the soil, to the plants, to the farmer and his or her family, expanding outward to the local community and region. She offers an abundance of examples of how farmers have come up with one-of-a-kind products--from specialty wool to simply the experience of interacting with animals--or turned a problem into an advantage--such as the couple who sold homemade salsa "kits" like hotcakes right smack in the middle of a tomato glut."

I'm glad I now own a copy of this book. I was impressed to find out that the Trends Institute had correctly predicted a nationwide (if not worldwide) return to farms like these, or that a new world was opening up again for local farms. I liked learning what makes these new micro eco-farms very different from pre-industrial farms, as well as in what ways they are similar. I never expected it to be a step-by-step rehash of ag-extension grape-trellising or fence-making how-tos which are available free or low-cost to anyone, nor the details of just one person's farm that worked for that person in his or her location. It is non-technical and describes many microfarm examples, explains the concept of how they grow and expand continually (without getting physically larger). Most farms described are from backyard size to five acres, with some up to 15 acres or so, and even one larger farm that added a microfarm element that seemed to outdo its larger counterpart in business!

          1 out of 5 stars Lot's of mistakes.......2007-07-06

This book has lots of mistakes (many circuits don't work), the author kept many magazines through years and reprinted the circuits he found in them.

2 out of 5 stars One Step Above Paperweight or Doorstop.......2006-04-07

I already had Vol 1. of this series from decades ago. I thought the author had maybe improved the content and accuracy of his books. Sadly mistaken. Schematic diagrams are routinely missing values for parts or lacking important information. I have been in electronics for several decades and I again am greatly disappointed with lack of quality. I don't know if the author received permission to reprint these circuits on the condition he left out part values or what. For the money your better off somewhere else. Large voume of circuits diminished by poor quality of information.

4 out of 5 stars More of an encyclopedia of circuit ideas than circuits themselves.......2005-12-06

Several readers have criticized this book for its lack of working circuits. Let me say that I too have run up against this problem while lifting circuits from this book. However, I like to look at this book as a great compendium of circuit ideas that are going to need some modification if they are to work as advertised. I particularly liked the sections on game circuits, sound-effect circuits, and sound/voice activated circuits. I have built several of these, and I had to make some adjustments to each one. The point is that the basic ideas were all there along with pretty good descriptions for each circuit. The author also takes the time to introduce electronic parts with which you may not be familiar. If you are not already familiar with electronics, this is not the book for you, since familiarity with electronics and circuit design is assumed. However, for only $40 I think it is a great value for those with the correct background.

          4 out of 5 stars Perhaps I can help.......2000-11-21

This series contains thousands of schematics from a variety of sources. I'm quite sure that few, if any, were tested by the authors. However, based on the sources, most probably were tested by the originators. The explanations were sparse, and there were errors, some obvious. As such, these are probably not suitable for beginners. However, I find them to be very valuable, and I suspect that many experienced techs, engineers, hobbiests, and experimenters will as well. I often use part of one circuit as the seed of an idea for a circuit I am designing, with the end result bearing little resemblance to the original. These are filled with perhaps the most valuable of all resources - other people's ideas. I do wish the authors had been more careful to catch errors.

2 out of 5 stars FOrgive the Author he knows not what to do.......1999-12-07

After puchasing volumes 1-6 as a group and testing some of the circuits I spent many hours correcting the mistakes and errors in these circuits. I threw the books into the closet and designed from scratch my own circuits, it took far less time and they work when I'm done. I wish you could hold the authors accountable for lost time I could hire a design staff larger than Microsoft.

          Book Description

Here's everything the robotics hobbyist needs to harness the power of the PICMicro MCU!

In this heavily-illustrated resource, author John Iovine provides plans and complete parts lists for 11 easy-to-build robots each with a PICMicro "brain.” The expertly written coverage of the PIC Basic Computer makes programming a snap -- and lots of fun.

          5 out of 5 stars Excellent through & through.......2007-01-11

Highly recommended for those somewhat new to PIC, Basic, and robotics. Keep it center-shelf eye-level.

          1 out of 5 stars Garbage!!!.......2005-03-02

I picked this book up and started reading the CMU camera chapter. The chapter lack depth and completeness. The author says nothing about how the image could be transmitted wirelessly to the PC or how the CMU camera communicates with the PIC. It seems that he is more concerned with selling the camera from his company Images SI than he is with writing a good book. The only useful thing that he mentioned is that you need to activate a software flourescent filter in a room that uses such lighting. But the price definately reflects the quality in this case!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent way to get started in PIC robotics........2004-09-09

I've been programming PIC Microcontrollers (with PIC Basic Pro) for a while now. They're really an invaluable tool for the modern electronics hobbyist, and the PIC Basic language couldn't be easier to write with. That being said, this book does assume you have at least some minimal knowledge of Basic, but really you could get by without it (the very point of Basic is that it's supposed to read like plain English -- which it does!), as the function of nearly every line of code is explained. The first few chapters are even dedicated to showing a complete beginner how to compile and program everything and build a basic test circuit. Very helpful if you've never worked with PICs before.

But on to the real substance of the book -- the projects! There's six complete robotics projects here; ranging from primitive light-seeking robots (that recreate some of the first robots ever to be built, back when AI was a new idea) to a bipedal walker (meaning, it actually has legs and a gait like that of a human -- it doesn't just tilt and waddle to simulate "walking" as virtually every other one of these purported "bipedal" robots do), robotic arms (made from ordinary servomotors), a six-legged walker, speech recognition and a full-color vision system. Impressive!

Another nice thing is that every one of them can be built with basic, inexpensive tools (though pre-made circuit boards and kits are available, to make it even easier). The diagrams and illustrations are clear and concise; every detail of every step is shown -- you can't go wrong.

As I mentioned, the real walking action of the bipedal walker is quite impressive, but I'd like to say more about the vision system, or the CMU Camera. This is a small camera which outputs data serially, to either your PC or a PIC Micro. In this instance, the camera is mounted on top of a three-wheel robot which can, utilizing edge detection in the PIC, actually follow a given target! This may sound complex (and, I suppose, it is), but it's explained in a very easy-to-follow manner. And it's more than just "put this part here" -- the theory is explained in terms that make it easy to understand, too. This gives you the know-how to put these concepts to use in your own projects.

Finally, to address the criticisms of other reviewers -- no, the book doesn't teach you assembly (it says right on the cover "No Assembly Language Programming Required"); but that's just it -- you don't need it! PIC Basic does the same thing, faster and easier. Do you really want to write out hundreds of lines of cryptic assembly code for what you could accomplish with just a few lines of Basic? The nominal cost is well worth it when you consider the *very* significant time savings.

If you're interested in building your own robots, this book is an excellent way to get started.

3 out of 5 stars No Assembly Language Required.......2004-02-22

It wasn't mentioned in the reviews I read but I was hoping for some good Assembly language examples. Unfortunately They did not use Assembly but instead a $250 Pic-Basic program. There is a cheaper version for $100 and the Author did provide examples for both. You will also need a programmer to actually program the PIC. So if you main goal is building a Robot with Pic micro controllers without learning the Assembly language then this book is for you.

            Book Description

The quantitative determination of the properties of micro- and nanostructures is essential in research and development. It is also a prerequisite in process control and quality assurance in industry. The knowledge of the geometrical dimensions of structures in most cases is the base, to which other physical and chemical properties are linked. Quantitative measurements require reliable and stable instruments, suitable measurement procedures as well as appropriate calibration artefacts and methods. The seminar "NanoScale 2004" (6th Seminar on Quantitative Microscopy and 2nd Seminar on Nanoscale Calibration Standards and Methods) at the National Metrology Institute (Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt PTB), Braunschweig, Germany, continues the series of seminars on Quantitative Microscopy. The series stimulates the exchange of information between manufacturers of relevant hard- and software and the users in science and industry.

Topics addressed in these proceedings are
            a) the application of quantitative measurements and measurement problems in: microelectronics, microsystems technology, nano/quantum/molecular electronics, chemistry, biology, medicine, environmental technology, materials science, surface processing
            b) calibration & correction methods: calibration methods, calibration standards, calibration procedures, traceable measurements, standardization, uncertainty of measurements
            c) instrumentation and methods: novel/improved instruments and methods, reproducible probe/sample positioning, position-measuring systems, novel/improved probe/detector systems, linearization methods, image processing
