Book Description
Larry. Bob. Archibald. These Veggie Tales stars are the most famous vegetables you'll ever eat. Oops, meet. Their antics are known around the world. But so much of the Veggie Tale story hasn't been told. In
Me, Myself, and Bob, Phil Vischer, founder of Big Idea and creator of Veggie Tales, gives a behind-the-scenes look at his not-so-funny journey with the loveable veggies. From famed creator to bankrupt dreamer, Vischer shares his story of trial and ultimate triumph as God inspired him with one big idea after another.

Life Changing***.......2007-08-01
I guess it is a phrase that is overly used - "life changing". But I truly find Phil's aftermath with God life changing. I learned more in this book than reading tens of theology books. No wonder Jesus often use real life examples to teach his audience.
Every time when I feel like to have to make a mark on this world, I need to re-read the last few chapters of this book. Wow, the Lord really uses this book to change my life.
When life gives you tomatoes, make tomatoe juice.......2007-07-20
With humility and grace that is not something you always find in business men, Phil takes you on the journey from conception, to the unfortunate ending of an empire. He does it in such a way you can still walk away from the book with a smile though because you know that God is not done with Phil yet, not by a long shot.
Much as Veggie Tales pushed the animation edge and proved amazingly successful, his new projects should be just as inspiring and enrapturing of the imagination.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is in Christian Business because it is a good "what to do" and "what not to do" book. You will learn from his painful mistakes, and learn how to make a great business that is bult to last.
An interesting read!.......2007-07-08
For those lovers of Veggie Tales it is fascinating to read what was going on behind the scenes. An intriguing look at the world of animation in the nineties.
Veggie Stew.......2007-07-08
Talk about getting yourself into a pickle! Phil Vischer, the creative mastermind behind the wildly successful VeggieTales, gives us an inside look at the slicing and dicing of his dream.
"Me, Myself, & Bob" has the trademarks of many a good autobiography: honesty, self-assessment without self-pity, and questions that resonate with us all. From humble Midwest beginnings, to the enchantments of Walt Disney, to the not-so-innocent offerings of MTV, Phil gives us peeks into his isolated childhood and his desire to do something great for God. His parents' divorce drove him deeper into a shell, where he thrived on exploring film and animation. These gifts led him through trials and struggles, but eventually to the formation of a studio which would break sales records and become a household name to many.
The success was proof of God's blessing, wasn't it? In the name of American Christianity, wouldn't it be even more godly to make things bigger and better--a Christian rival to the "valueless" entertainment from Disney?
The story of VeggieTales rise and fall is sobering, full of lessons for all who think they have a "vision." Phil Vischer challenges this way of thinking, presenting his own life as a cautionary tale. He does so with humor, humility, and final thoughts on what it means to truly receive and follow revelation from God. After the stew he got himself into, Phil shows he has learned to serve a God larger and yet much more intimate than the idols of wealth and success. The story reads quickly, but the concepts here are ones to use for a lifetime.
Has he got a story for you!.......2007-07-05
By the mere cover of this book, I wasn't sure whether to expect outright hilarity on every page, or something a little more. It turns out I got more than I bargained for, and the lessons are imperitive, at least in the Christian walk of life. Hey, I did find myself laughing out loud in lots of different places in this. But I also found myself amazed at the humility that Phil Vischer allowed himself. He basically held nothing back! In parts, this was like walking into a theme park, with all the attractions you ever dreamed of. Then in others, it was like going into an operating room to watch open heart surgery, only to stand there and say nothing as the chest cavity is ripped open to examine the heart. Yeah, I think this was something special, as well as something personal.
I loved the chapters about Phil's fascination with technology, with cameras, with anything to do with changing the world of childrens' entertainment! When I read about him getting kicked out of Bible college, he sounded like my kind of guy. Phil had a dream, and he wanted to be like Walt Disney. And you get all kinds of great stories, including how he met Mike Nawrocki, voice of Larry the Cucumber. It tells of a dream, a dream God had given him. It tells of the great rise of Big Idea...and then some! And he talks a little bit about some of the episodes, some of his ideas. You feel the exhaustion of how it felt to finally finish the first Veggie Tales episode, "Where's God When I'm S-scared?" You feel the pressure from up on top, when it should be you that should be on top. But as lots of stories go, along with the great laughs, come a few humble tears.
There are lessons involved, and one of the final chapters in this is dedicated to "What have we learned?" The chapter is simply entitled, "Lessons." I think one of the key lessons is to take the dreams we call "OUR DREAMS," and give them to God. Then when and if they become GOD'S DREAMS, it might make more sense. There are parts in here that are gut wrenchers! Sometimes you just have to die to self and give in over to God. WOW! So, if you picked this up in anticipation of, "Silly Songs With Larry," or even "Somber Moments With Bob," for a simple laugh, you've probably come to the wrong place. If you're looking for honesty, for somebody to tug at the stitches once the incision has been closed, as well as a little humor added here and there, then check it out! Get ready for a life lesson or two. Bob is always the first to announce, "Have we got a show for you!" at the beginning of every Veggie Tales episode. Well, Bob's still clearly in the picture. But it happens to be Phil's story. And has he got a story for you!

Customer Reviews:
not as useful as I hoped.......2007-06-26
I was expecting more. I was hoping for more places to stay overnight with a large dog. I have a golden retriever and wanted to include him in more of our activities, but this listed stuff that was out of our way or less quality than places I already know. Some new places to try, but I wouldn't recommend anyone to buy this book. It is a nice idea, but nothing new.
Some real problems with this vlume.......2007-01-19
Reading these positive reviews I almost hesitated to post a rather negative review; however, I feel it important to point out some problems with this particular volume.
My work keeps me on the road for much of the year and my dog often accompanies me on these trips. Locating dog friendly properties is sometimes a challenge so I was pleased when a friend gave me this book as a gift. Unfortunately, I found the book rife with errors, misinformation and glaring omissions. As the authors correctly point out, it is vital to verify the rules for an individual property prior to leaving home in order to avoid disappointment and inconvenience. Properties change hands; situations alter and rules change without warning. While reading through the book I kept returning to verify the publication date since so many entries were very out of date. This particular issue was published in 2004. In a number of places throughout the book recommendations for lodging and food include properties that closed as much as seven or eight years prior to the publication date. In New England there are several Inns that cater to dog owners offering special programs and amenities for dog owners and their pets. The properties that I am aware of have all been in operation for at least eight to ten years. Yet no mention is made of them. Odd.
I think the bottom line of this book and on any similar books is that the dog owner who chooses to travel with his/her pet, must do their own research prior to hitting the road and must verify all information listed on any web site or in any book. Perhaps it is simply impossible to write a book such as this and hope that any of the information will remain current upon publication.
A MUST for any dog owner in New England!.......2003-01-07
As a resident of Connecticut, I found it a daunting task to find places where my dog was accepted. This book took all the guess work out of who allows them and makes life a LOT easier! I was also surprised to find a few eateries in my own town which allow patio eating with my furry friend, which is a welcome surprise. Definitely, any dog owner who lives in New England or is planning on a visit here needs this book. It is much more extensive than most other dog travel guides, including a ranking system and descriptions of all places included, as well as some cute anecdotes of the authors' own experiences with their pooches at these places.
you will never want to leave them home again!.......2002-08-06
Like most people we love new england and especially the berkshires (lenox, stockbridge, ect)or a gettaway up to maine. I was always jealous of people that I meet with their dogs, and always yearn to go on vacation with our pets instead of worrying how they are doing at home with a petsitter or in a kennel somewhere. now, thanks to this book I never realized how many hotels and b&b's allowed pets! this book makes travels with your fido so much easier and they wont just be sitting in the hotel room bored, either. There are so many places for them to go to that are mentioned in this guide book, they can enjoy themselves as well. (after all, they are on vacation too, right)?
My dogs and I thank would like to thank the authors of this book from the bottom of our hearts! thank you, thank you!!cant wait to buy your new edition about New York!
Great Resource.......2002-07-30
I found this book exceptionally helpful for planning our vacation with our dogs. The places listed are great for taking your dog, and the book contains a variety of subjects: places to stay, places to eat, places to go have fun (hiking, beaches, etc.), and also lists events that are happening in the area. The only problem I had was that some prices have changed, and that there was some inside information omitted; for example, the beaches in Gloucester are leash free after the life-guards have left, even though the signs at the beach say "no dogs allowed." We missed out on some serious beach time because we didn't know that tidbit until the end of our visit. Just make sure you follow up (they include phone numbers for every spot listed) if you're counting on price or hours or something.

Close to Home.......2006-03-08
These 44 stories had me grinning, then chuckling, then laughing out loud so much that my wife and children wanted me to read it to them. We've spent the last several evenings reading these tales and have enjoyed them immensely. Callaway's style is not just funny, he has a point to every story. There were times I had to quit reading because I teared up, but more often I had to quit reading to laugh. This book has been such a blessing in our home. The book centers on the things that really matter and shows us that there's hope - something we as parents desperately need every single day.

The author came from Switzerland in 1966 and joined the Shelby team as a mechanic in time to work on the 1967 Le Mans winning cars. His stories of the American racing scene and particularly the Shelby era are fascinating. Strongly recommended. A hard-to-find book not generally available in the conventional book trade.

Book Description
Description: Phil & Me is a daughter's use of photography to try to understand her relationship with her father and the schizophrenia that has crippled him. Amanda's father, Philip Tetrault, is a poet who has lived with schizophrenia since he attended McGill University, in Montreal, at the age of 21. As a young man, Philip was suffused with promise, hailed by Leonard Cohen in 1986 as one of the best young poets in Canada--before he slipped into yet another schizophrenic void. These photographs cover six years of sporadic meetings between Amanda and her father. Throughout, Philip had been giving her scraps of paper and napkins with verses and lines scrawled on them: some are published here. Photo booth pictures that span the past 27 years form a visual narrative thread. Philip is now a part of the streets and the shadows of Montreal. The reality of his days--moving through the caf s and parks of the city, his habitual Mickey of vodka in hand, and his acquaintances of street kids, squirrels, crows and seagulls--haunt these photographs and his poems alike.
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant.......2006-03-18
One of the most moving, powerful and poignant books on the subject of mental illness. Amanda Tetrault's photographs are stark and immensely evocative, and, juxtaposed with her father's simple, sometimes lyrical, sometimes jagged poetry, manage to provide an unsentimental and devastating insight into the effect that mental illness can have on a family. A must buy for many reasons - for the incredible photography, for the moving poetry, for the potent synergy between the two...

Great guide to D.C. and surrounding areas.......2007-05-07
I had traveled to Reston, VA with my dogs to go to the Pet Fiesta while there I picked this book up and used it to travel all over the Washington D.C. area with my dogs. I am so glad that I did because I was not sure what I was going to do after the Pet Fiesta was over and this book opened up lots of options and lots of ideas for future trips.
I advise taking a pen with you so you can write in additional things that you find that may not be listed in the book. While at Old Town Alexandria today we ate at an Irish restaurant that had a doggie menu that was not listed in the book but was a must go to if you travel there.
I loved this book and only wish that there was one for my area.
Not great.......2006-08-07
I bought this based on the great reviews, so perhaps it was a let-down because I had high expectations. This is a guide book with a slight dog orientation, but honeselty, I didn't feel like this really gave me much valuable information about living and traveling in the DC area with a dog- other than telling me where parks are (info available on many web sites). The actual dog-friendliness of the parks, and rating system seemed totally off with how I would have rated parks. Seems like they are rated more for person-appeal than dog-appeal.
But maybe I'm just biased as I have a hound and value FENCED off-leash parks above all :)
Can I Kiss the Authors?.......2002-11-07
This is one of my favorite books ever. Really. I moved to the D.C. area with my lab three years ago, and while we were used to having dozens of places to go for various reasons or times, I didn't know where to begin to find good places to take her around our new home. This book was a godsend for finding fun places to go, especially because I found the reviews to give a me a very accurate idea of what sort of place we were going, including what sort of "feel" it might have for dog-friendliness. Some of the features of the book I have found extremely helpful are:
* Birds-eye maps showing where the reviewed locations are in the counties covered (perfect for finding a park near odd places that I might run errands)
* How strict the leash law is followed (this is a biggie for me -- while the authors point out excellent reasons to use the leash, they very helpfully suggest where we can get away without it)
* Rough idea how crowded the area in question might be, and how easy or difficult to get to (varies of course by time of day and season)
* Whether there's a place for doggie swimming
In my area (Sterling/Ashburn, VA) I've found the book to be amazingly comprehensive for my local and outlying areas, and find that the park descriptions have always given me a pretty accurate idea what to expect. The book covers a wide enough range (including some pseudo-local vacation destinations) that I've used it on countless occasions to find nice stopover while on short trips outside my "home turf". Highly recommended for anyone who enjoys finding varied places to visit with their pups.
Wonderfully practical guide for dog owners.......2002-06-01
I bought this book when it first came out for a friend of mine who was moving to Baltimore with her dog. Two years later, I borrowed it from her when I discovered I was moving to D.C. I found it enormously usefull for choosing a dog-friendly neighborhood with good access to parks. The authors understand the basic qualities of a good dog park: safety, space, a group of 'regular' neighborhood go-ers, and access to a good espresso bar for weekend dog walking. Overall, the writers do an excelent job.
I have only a few complaints. One - due to the impossibility of visiting every park in this populous region more than once, I've found that the park's ratings can heavily reflect the day and time of the visit -- not necessarily what the park is like on a typical weekday at 6pm. Also, some park ratings reflect a nice place to go with a small dog on a leash, you won't necessarily have the same experience with your massive Great Dane tugging at every new smell. The writers also disapprove of dogs being off-leash, and rate more lowly some parks that are true jems for those of us with larger dogs that require more exercise.
Overall, a great guide, and certainly unique. A must for all dog owners in this area, particularly if you moving to this region.
No longer have to wonder where to take your pooches.......1999-01-07
I highly recommend this book to dog owners who love to take their little four-legged friend(s) everywhere. It is well organized and the writing style used is perfect for dog lovers.
It covers almost all the parks in the Washington D.C., Virginia and Baltimore. Have you ever looked up a park on a map and it looked huge and perfect for your dog, and when you got there, you and your dog were very disappointing with the park? Well, the review for each park is quite accurate. With this book on hand, you can look up a park and find out if it is suitable for your dog before driving there. It covers important information that a dog owner needs to know about the park/area - such as the poop scoop law and the leash law.
It also contains information (ie. hotel, restaurant, pet stores, etc...) that is very useful for dog owners who like to take their pooches on vacation with them.
Embedded into the book, you will find dog adoption information. The book encourages suggestions from readers. I've already written to the publisher suggesting to include information on various rescue organizations and local animal shelters - a way to help promote pet rescue/adoption.

Book Description
Author Phil Cousineau is an adventure travel guide and mythographer whose mentor was scholar Joseph Campbell. He has collected riddles from every land, uncovering common threads in what he calls "ingenious questions in search of clever answers." Organized by country, Riddle Me This will educate as it entertains and intrigues readers. Although written with a sense of fun and a love of words, the book has a serious premise at its core -- to rescue riddles from obscurity and return them to their proper status as one of the earliest types of folk wisdom. Suitable fare for scholars or for family fun, Riddle Me This will tickle the funnybone and stimulate the brain.
Customer Reviews:
So bad it's funny.......2007-09-27
The cover promises a "World Treasury of Word Puzzles, Folk Wisdom and Literary Conundrums" and instead yields a poorly constructed pile of random writings. After a long yet tedious introduction, the main point of which seems to be to show us how brilliant and erudite the author is, we're treated to "The Pleasury". The author appears to have selected his riddles by scanning world literature looking for pages containing the word "riddle" and then copying down something that looks like a riddle.
The "Pleasury" is a random assortment of word riddles guaranteed to be devoid of any sense or context. For example, an African riddle #127 -"Two lions are waiting on the hill". The answer - the ears. This is the kind of riddle where if you hear the answer you can shrug and agree with it, but you would never have a strong belief in the answer without some context. You might guess the answer but you would also equally guess many, many other answers.
For a volume of modern, creative riddles, I would suggest Quest for the Riddle Stone: A Riddle Book. That book has fewer riddles, but they're all well written each with one correct answer that can be figured based on what's written.
There is a good book waiting to be written of world riddles, but this isn't it.

Customer Reviews:
Wonderful perpetual calendar book........2007-05-21
This book is a nice little daily inspirational perpetual calendar that kids can spend just a few minutes a day reflecting on their faith. As kids learn to understand the bible better then these passages grow stronger and more meaningful to use in their daily lives through the years. The cartoon illustrations are very cute. I have personally bought 50 copies over the last 5 years to give as gifts. I hope you enjoy as much as I do with my children.
GREAT KIDS DEVOTIONAL.......2007-04-05
I have to say... as a mom who is very concerned about the spiritual upbringing of her children, I highly recommend this book. Especially for those who have small children with short attention spans- as most do at early ages. Yes, the devotionals are short, but to the point, and my kids actually get it. The gospel is simple- why complicate things... After we read the days devotion I ask them simple questions that bring out certain points in the reading. Through these devotionals, they are learning how to apply these principals to life at home, in relationships, at school, and in their own spritual growth, and so on. Yes, I recommend this book.
Absolutely amazing in every way!.......2006-08-19
The only reason I could guess as to why certain people wouldn't be gripped spiritually by this book is because it doesn't speak to a worldly heart. Personally, I find the illustrations match the messages perfectly! Phil Smouse simplified Oswald Chambers original words in such an unexpectedly powerful way.
At first I convinced myself I was buying this book for my 6 month old grandson. He's going to get his own copy...I'm treasuring this one. In fact, I plan to buy several copies of this book just in case it ever goes out of print.
I still read the classic edition of "My Utmost for His Highest" written for adults and it too is awesome. Jesus did say we are to be child-like. Now I really understand what Matthew 18:3 (..."Except ye be converted, and become as little children, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of heaven.") means!
Here's an example taken from July 23rd's devotion to 1 Corinthians 1:30 ("Of Him you are in Christ Jesus, who became for us wisdom from God--and righteousness and sanctification and redemption."):
"Everything God has is mine. His goodness. His love. His holiness. His faith. Everything! He gave them all to me. Because I deserve it? No. Because He loves me."
Smouse is obviously gifted in his ability to express emotion through his artwork and to condense the deeply profound messages in the way he does cannot be done without God's Spirit.
If you want a meaningless devotional time, buy this.......2003-02-22
Maybe that was a little too harsh. But I started using this book with my son a couple of weeks ago. I am always looking for good devotional books, and when I saw this had some good reviews and had enough material for a year, I decided to give it a try.
It is short all right -- maybe three or four sentences on each page. And my son always wants to know the story about the picture. But there is no story about the picture, because what is on the page doesn't relate.
When finding devotional material, I want something that will hold my son's interest while teaching him Biblical concepts. Because there is no story, it doesn't really hold his interest, and the content is so simplified that it is basically meaningless. After reading it, I often don't see anything we could possibly discuss!
If you want to have an empty ritual every day that you call "devotions," this may be a great book for you and your child to use. But if you want something that will both interest and teach your child, I would recommend looking elsewhere.
excellent for toddler / prechoolers.......2002-05-27
I wasn't going to write a review but I couldn't help notice someone gave it a really bad review stating that it had to many pictures and pages. Well it's a DAILY DEVOTIONAL BIBLE just as it says on the cover. Its wonderful for those parents who want to start leading their children to GOD as soon as possible, a little bit each day. It has easy to understand text, short like my son's attention span too. This way he gets the story before he wonders off to his toy cars. Plus it has plenty of pictures which appeal to small children who learn by seeing![...]

Spiritual Conversation Starter for Kids.......2006-07-23
My two older children, ages 8 and 4, love this book because they are beginning to gain a deeper understanding of what it means to be in a relationship with God. The topics range from His character to ways we can let God be our Friend to what you will be when you grow up. Each section has a verse, a short and meaningful devotional, main points review, and a question and answer section that allows the children to think about how they can make the lesson/concept meaningful in their lives. Previously I struggled with developing meaningful, spiritual, and consistent conversations with my children. This book is just perfect for aiding in those conversations at their level.
