Customer Reviews:
Excellent overview of magnetic recording for the engineer........1999-06-12
Wang and Taratorin present the best technical overview of magnetic recording I have seen to date. What I found especially valuable is the extensive discussion of both the characteristics and measurement of the principal non-linearities impacting magnetic recording. These include such things as non-linear transition shift, hard-easy transition shift, MR assymetries, and self erasure. The books focus is on the recording/playback processes, but also includes a reasonable introduction to coding and partial response channel design. For readers who want more details on the codes used historically, Mee and Daniel's works are better.

Magnetic Disk Drive Technology: Heads, Media, Channel, Interfaces, and Integration
ASIN: 0070412766 |
Book Description
This book gives a comprehensive treatment of the technologies underlying all forms of state-of-the-art data storage, video, and audio magnetic recording. The topics covered include the basic principles of nonlinear and linear recording, longitudinal and perpendicular recording modes, particulate and film tape and disk media, the design and materials for bulk and film heads, the limits and expectations of areal densities, the measurement techniques used in modern research and development laboratories, and the critical mechanical aspects of the head-medium interface.
Book Description
This book is designed to give the student a fundamental, in-depth understanding of all the essential features of the magnetic recording process for both high density disk and tape recording. The book provides a thorough grounding in four basic areas of magnetic recording: structure and fields of heads and media, the replay process, the recording process, and medium noise analysis. Besides the fundamental issues, key systems questions of nonlinearities, overwrite, side track phenomena, error rate estimates as well as comparisons of MR and inductive heads will be discussed. The student will be able to use the information presented to design and analyze key experiments for head and medium evaluation as well as for overall system performance decisions. A parallel treatment of time and frequency response will enable the student to evaluate signal processing schemes. The book is intended either for senior-year undergraduates or first-year graduates. It assumes that the reader has had basic introductory electrical engineering or physics courses such as electricity and magnetism and applied mathematics.
Customer Reviews:
Essential Book for the Serious.......2002-01-18
This book should be on the bookshelf of every serious worker in magnetic recording. While there are numerous introductory texts on magnetic recording, Bertram gives the reader in-depth treatments of transition models, non-linear bit shift, non-linear amplitude loss, and overwrite that are based on very clear models of the recording process and lead to useful back-of-the-envelope expressions that are readily compared with experiment. His discussions of medium noise mechanisms (such as fluctuations or jitter in transition position and slope in thin film media) are unexcelled. The level of mathematics assumes a good preparation at the college senior or graudate level. It would be great to have a second edition of this book such that a number of typos and errors could be cleared up.
Not for Everyone.......2000-01-27
I think Bertram's book needs to be more explanatory in nature for the maths and physics, not everybody has the mathematical and physics background to read the book, especially for engineers. I have written somewhere else that unless you have solid understanding in undergraduate and graduate engineering electromagnetic theory, this book is very hard to understand. It is a killer. Since I have not understood it, I give this book low rating. But I bet that as I understand the book better, the book rating will go up.
Very profound, and In-depth.......1999-01-27
The book covers fundamental principles in magnetic recording. It has rich content and inspiring discussion that reflect the author's subtle understanding and experience in the field. A must for pro's in magnetic recording.
Extremely difficult to read, not very helpful.......1998-08-07
This book is extremely complex. The book assumes you already have a great understanding of magnetic recording terminology and physics. I wouldn't need the book if I understood it already. The constant mention of references detracts from the information flow. Complex mathematical formulations are tossed around like there was nothing to them. Terminology & technology is often referenced w/o any explanation to the reader.

Book Description
Magnetic recording is expected to become core technology in a multi-billion dollar industry in the in the very near future. Some of the most critical discoveries regarding perpendicular write and playback heads and perpendicular media were made only during the last several years as a result of extensive and intensive research in both academia and industry in their fierce race to extend the superparamagnetic limit in the magnetic recording media. These discoveries appear to be critical for implementing perpendicular magnetic recording into an actual disk drive.
This book addresses all the open questions and issues which need to be resolved before perpendicular recording can finally be implemented successfully, and is the first monograph in many years to address this subject.
This book is intended for graduate students, young engineers and even senior and more experienced researchers in this field who need to acquire adequate knowledge of the physics of perpendicular magnetic recording in order to further develop the field of perpendicular recording.

Book Description
This book is aims to be a comprehensive source on the physics and engineering of magneto-resistive heads. Most of the material is presented in a nonmathematical manner to make it more digestible for researchers, students, developers, and engineers.
In addition to revising and updating material available in the first edition, Mallinson has added nine new chapters dealing with various aspects concerning spin valves, the electron spin tunneling effect, the electrostatic discharge effects, read amplifiers, and signal-to-noise ratios, making this a completely up-to-date reference.
The previous edition of
Magneto-Resistive Heads was the first volume in the new Academic Press series in Electromagnetism edited by Professor Isaak Mayergoyz, who is a well-recognized expert in the field.
Customer Reviews:
This should include much more concrete examples.......1999-07-24
If any good teachers in this field are available around you, this can help you learn from the teachers very well. But if not, it might take you much time to realize what MRH is, how it works, and what the background is, even if you are familier with basic science (university level). More examples of practically being (having been) used structure, better you understand.
Book Description
Dividing classical and popular music recording into two distinct sections, this book focuses on the special techniques used for recording outside the confines of the studio and shows readers how to interface with sound reinforcement equipment in the hall or club.
Recent developments in portable digital multitrack recorders and high-quality mixers have made on-location recording feasible for all recording engineers. Many bands want to be recorded in concert because they feel that is when they play their best music. The engineer's job is to capture that performance on tape and bring it back live and there's only one chance to get it right.
This book covers all aspects of live recording, with a special section on miking techniques for surround sound. Pre-session procedures, such as power and grounding practice, pre-production meetings, and site surveys are fully examined. On Location Recording Techniques also describes the paperwork required to plan a live recording session. A study of surround miking techniques for both classical and popular music, and of the components needed to build a quality remote recording truck complete this book.
Covers the latest technology
Includes both classical and popular recording techniques
Offers many practical tips and shortcuts for easier setup and takedown
Customer Reviews:

Recording Music on Location, Second Edition
Recording's sliced-bread.......2000-04-16
This is the only book I've seen on this topic. It's timely, clearly written, and full of useful information both for pop and classical recording.
Good book for stereo mike techniques........1999-08-13
This book is about stereo mike techniques for recording orchestral performances and live concerts, but doesn't provide much info on recording location sound i.e. film sound if that's what you're looking for.

Book Description
"The first magnetic recording device was demonstrated and patented by the Danish inventor Valdemar Poulsen in 1898. Poulsen made a magnetic recording of his voice on a length of piano wire. MAGNETIC RECORDING traces the development of the watershed products and the technical breakthroughs in magnetic recording that took place during the century from Paulsen's experiment to today's ubiquitous audio, video, and data recording technologies including tape recorders, video cassette recorders, and computer hard drives.
An international author team brings a unique perspective, drawn from professional experience, to the history of magnetic recording applications. Their key insights shed light on how magnetic recording triumphed over all competing technologies and revolutionized the music, radio, television and computer industries. They also show how these developments offer opportunities for applications in the future.
MAGNETIC RECORDING features 116 illustrations, including 92 photographs of historic magnetic recording machines and their inventors."

Customer Reviews:
Worth the cost.......2002-10-12
While surely not inexpensive for a paperback book, this is an important study---perhaps the best single volume relating the history of magnetic sound, video, and data recording methods over a century. Written by a number of Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) authorities, the 20 chapters provide clearly-written and well-illustrated (nearly 100 photos and a host of diagrams) accounts of the rise of various modes of recording. One need not be an engineer (I'm not!) to understand the discussions here.
Of special value is the pulling together of material on all of these methods in one place, allowing ready comparison of who did what and when. We learn about inventors, marketing, hardware, and the means of recording, allowing a clearer understanding of how later developments built upon earlier ones. Some of the principles of modern videocams, for example, have been known for decades.
Each chapter includes references to contemporary studies and more recent research, allowing the reader to pursue topics at greater length. In all, this is a valuable anthology of original research that sheds considerable light on a fascinating story.
