I bought this book hoping for a new spin on Bookbinding lit. It turned out to be more of the same: lots more stab bindings. The explanations are vague as well. The chapter on Scroll-making was interesting, but overall, this book is not worth the price. If you have other bookbinding books, there's nothing new here.
At the Master's Feet.......2005-01-30
As an amatuer bookbinder with varying levels of attention span, I found this book really useful. The illustrations and directions are very clear and can be followed very closely or used as a jumping off point. It covers many styles of binding, tools and paper. I especially enjoyed the pictures where the bookbinder's foot is used to to hold something down leaving the hands free to work. Ever read a craft how-to book and thought...well I could do that if I had 3 hands?

This is an excellent introduction to the varied forms of Japanese bookbinding. As with so many other crafts in Japan, it is both like and very unlike matching Western craft.
First, there is the wide variety of different binding styles. Some are very distinctive. In the accordion and 'flutter' books, the first and last pages are bound to the covers. The rest of the pages are fan-folded, either one long strip or sheets pasted together. Other bindings, whether Chinese, Korean, or uniquely Japanese in style, tie or glue the pages into a more Western stack. The end of this book shows traditional outer covers for books, partial or complete boxes. The are made uniquely for each volume or set, to give it additional protection.
The tools, materials, and techniques are laid out clearly. The authors show first show the traditional craft, as it has been practiced since the Heian era (ca. 1000 AD). They also show how modern materials can be used instead of or in addition to the older ones. The technique for each binding or box is spelled out in clear pictures and text.
Clear technique is what makes this book. It gives the scholar a good understanding of how a master artisan would prepare or repair each artifact. It also gives the home crafter the ability to adapt classic techniques to modern uses, from keepsake albums to collections of a child's art. The structure of most Japanese books is simple enough for a child to imitate with some kind of success, even though the book's examples approach museum quality. With a little thought, the techniques can be adapted to almost any level of skill.
This is book is very enjoyable, even if you just read it. If you go ahead and try some of the techniques shown, you'll enjoy it even more. You may even get results that you'll enjoy for years to come.

As a professional artist I found the step by step instructions and black and white photos and drawn illustrations to be exceptional. Each part of the craft of book making including the proper tools and glues for the job are described in easy detail. A variety of Japanese style books are included in this book. A valuable addition to the library of a paper craftsman.
Excellent and complete resource on Japanese Bookbinding.......2000-02-15
After a brief history of bookbinding in Japan, Ikegami gives wonderful details of the tools and methods of bookbinding. Covering the tools and materials, he not only shows and details the classical, but lists more accessible western tools and materials that can be used as well. Ikegami begins covering the actual methods of bookbinding with a section on the basic techniques used. What follow are detailed descriptions of the construction of 19 different book styles, grouped into categories ( Four-Hole, Accordian, Ledgers, Other.) The last chapters cover the construction of book cases and the book mending using Japanese techniques. Finally appendices include an extensive Selected reading list (with both English and Japanese titles), and a suppliers list. Throughout the book the numerous illustrations are extremely clear, and used to show the step by step construction of the books. The text accompanying them is detailed and clear. 8 pages of full page, color plates show each of the books described in the text.
This book has found a permanent spot on my studio bookshelf, and has in fact prompted me to renew my own love affair with Japanese books. I have already completed two projects, with nice results, after only 1 week with copy of this book from the library. Ordered my own copy today.

mr. yumoto's work is very descriptive and pictures fill the pages more than text does.
"Samurai Sword a Handbook" lacks an analytic quality that would bring togheter the social, historical, technical and martial dimensions of the nihonto.
last but not least, such an important - and relatively undocumented - subject as care and maintenance of japanese blades is simply and vaguely evoked in two pages that make up a ridiculous chapter.
all in all, yumoto's work is too old to be satisfying to comtemporary readers in search of a meaningful, concise handbook which would explain rather than describe.

I finished reading it yesterday. It is too much for beginner and not enough for intermediate or even expert...
It is definitely usefull for future reference in terms of finding more about your sword or swords you want to buy and using some of the criterias. Photos are B&W and crappy and references text-to-drawings are badly organized.
What is strongly missing is types of sword damage, how to eveluate type of damage and find it on blades etc...
I dont know when book was written but some information also seems bit obsolete...
If the book was hardcover, had two times more pages, colored photos to go with drawings, better organized and have more information, I would give 5. Now I give 3 of 5.

This is an awesome book for anyone wnating to know more about samurai swords and speaking as a beginner myself, I found that this book explained everything clearly and concisely - I now know a lot more about swords than i did before :)

For any beginner of Japanese, adjectives and adverbs are bound to present a challenge. Unlike English adjectives, Japanese ones conjugate, meaning that you must memorize their various forms before being able to build sentences of any complexity. Adverbs do not conjugate, but make use of particles to show their grammatical relationship to other words, and some have very subtle shades of meaning that are difficult to grasp. Moreover, many do not translate into adverbs in English. The role these parts of speech play in adding flavor to the Japanese language is invaluable. Excellent Source to Find Out About Japanese Adjectives.......2007-05-30
Before describing the book, a word or two has to be mentioned regarding the publisher, Kodansha International. I don't know if it's because of the policy within Kodansha, or the Japanese culture in general, but you can feel the tidiness, accuracy, and meticulous nature of each author, and the effort expended in order to convey information to the reader the best possible way.
When first starting to learn Japanese on my own, I had tried grammar texts and dictionaries from two other publishers. I found out after a couple of months, that they only cause the reader great confusion, lack a lot of important concepts, the print is often ineligible, and the sentences are in Romaji and not in the native alphabet (Hiragana, Katakana, and Kanji), which is so necessary in order to learn the language properly. Part 1 is the backbone of the Japanese adjectives, which is presented in table format, for the i adjectives and na adjectives. Part 2 discusses different modifiers which conjugate with adjectives. For example, "daro" (probably) added to "tsumetai" (cold), means "it is probably cold". Each case is presented in a block in English and Japanese, and its meaning is given to the right. Then it follows with an example of the conjugate for each type of adjective, explanation of that conjugate, and three sentences each in Romaji, Japanese, and English, where that conjugate is used. The conjugate is highlighted in bold, in the Romaji and Japanese sentence, which makes it easier to pinpoint. Part 3 introduces a long list of adverbs and the way they modify verbs, adjectives, other adverbs, and nouns. Each section ends with 8 or 9 exercises for which answers are given at the back.
The index has to be praised in particular, because each subject includes its own index. Each of i adjectives and na adjectives are organized in two different lists in Romaji (together with Japanese to the right), and another list is given in English for both types, with Japanese to the right). The adverbs are divided into sections in Romaji, for example, those expressing time, those expressing quantity, etc. Again a comprehensive list of adverbs is given in English.
In short, I recommend it for every English speaking Japanese student learning on his or her own, or even as supplementary material at college.
A Little Book Packed with Lots of Information .......2006-01-30
I like this book a lot. It's easy to follow, well organized and filled with examples and concise explanations. It also contains Kana and Kanji version which is helpful as I just started to learn the writing. I am still a beginner and I think this book is very helpful. It has helped me understand grammar and how to use the words in a sentence.

First of all, I'd like to reiterate all the praise from previous reviewers: this book is a tremendous resource about the many mutant forms of Japanese adjectives and provides excellent explanations and practice exercises; the examples are given in kanji/kana as well as romaji. The adverbs are categorized by useful categories such as degree, circumstance, certainty, and so on, and the list of onamatopoeia is a wonder to behold.
However, I have one nagging nitpick, which is that the book lacks a comprehensive index. It seems to've been conceived as two entirely separate books, leaving the reference section at the end still awkwardly split in half: the adjective exercise answers are followed by (unindexed) Japanese/English and English/Japanese adjective glossaries ; after that, the adverb exercise answers are followed by a categorized list organized by (indexed) order of introduction in the text rather than by alphabet/kana for the actual words in English or Japanese, and then by another unindexed pair of Japanese/English and English/Japanese glossaries for the adverbs.
I suggest adding several bookmarks or post-its to mark the different reference sections in the back, and (to the publishers) page-indexing the glossaries in future editions to make it easier to look up usage examples. Other than that, this really is a very good book-- I just realized that the appendices also contain a list of sentence-pattern templates for adjective forms-- so buy it, but be prepared for some initial frustration until you get used to the way it's organized.

While I am not done with this one it is only because of my level of skill so far it is very helpful in explaning forms, introducing new words, and kanji. This is a masterpiece, but make two precautions. 1 Get a supplementing workbook. Actually put forth the effort to make your own sentences and there will be a vast increase in your language abilities and flow. I agree with all the other writers in the amazon.com book reviews that praised this book alongside with me. This books should help fragment any other textbook that seems cloudy. Caution: Not for total beginners. A learner of Japanese needs a fairly wide vocabulary to understand the sentence stuctures.
This is such an Eye Opener Book.......2002-12-28
I've been studying japanese for quite some time, and I wasn't even aware of how the japanese adjectives can conjugate just like verbs. I thought that the only conjugation's that adjectives possessed were the Plain/ Polite Past/Present, and negative/affirmative, as well as the -ba, -tari, -tara, and the -sa form. But turn's out that this is just part of the basic's. Just like with verbs the basics would be the -te form, the -ba form etc. to which you can add diffrent ending's to, to give diffrent meaning's to the verb, you can do the same with the Adjectives. This book is great for studying japanese adjectives. Now for the adverbs, the adverbs section is really good, they give you a bundle of words all sectioned off into categories according to time, quantity, degree, circumstance, onomatopoeic words (A MUST READ), adverbs used with negatives, adverbs with diffrent meaning's with positive and negative expressions, interrogative adverbs, adverbs used with conditionals, adverbs expressing desire, conjecture, or resemblence. As you can see, the list is long, and very helpfull, the most helpfull part of the adverbs section (to me) were the onomatopoeic words, and adverbs with diffrent meanings ith positive and negative sentences. If you buy this book, it will save you ATLEAST a good 10 hours of tedious looking up definition's for words, research, and so on.. because this book does it all, and not only that. Every few lessons or so, this book provides a pratice to see how well you have mastered what you have learned. Over all I give this book a perfect 5 out of 5, for it's great layout and great approach to learning japanese adjectives and adverbs. (I also recommend you buy "The handbook of japanese verbs" 'it's sister book', and "Jpanaese verbs at a glance" these two books give the most information you can learn about the conjugation of japanese verbs) Well, I hope this was a helpfull review, thanks for reading it. Need Help with Verbs...Get this book.......2007-07-18
I have been studying Japanese for almost 2 years now in a classroom with Japanese for busy people. Although these are good books they lack detail in certain aspects such as verbs and particles. If I had Handbook of Japanese verbs from the start I think I would be almost fluent by now or well on my way to be. The book breaks down verbs to an easy to understand format with exercise and answers in the back so that you know if you got it correct. Overall a really good book and you can't beat the price for this kind of help.

If you are white, male and like anime, you will want to learn Japanese so you can watch your favorite perversion in the native language.
You will not be able to understand any of it. Anime is too difficult for you to understand with just a couple of years of thumbing through JAPANEEZ 4 DUMMEEZ and awkwardly trying to hit on the Japanese exchange students with your lame pickup lines they can't understand.
This book is a good foundation to start learning verbs and, with diligent study, you can understand it when a Japanese girl who is offended by your flabby, greasy body and foul odor tells you to ______ off in Japanese.

I recommend this book to everyone who is studying Japanese. It's a compact, well organized, easy to understand grammatical reference text about verbs. When I purchased the book I had just completed my first textbook, and could only use the polite, -masu form of verbs. This book taught me how to conjugate all verbs, and taught me many grammatical constructions related to verbs. Each verb construction lesson has three examples (written in romaji and kanji, and translated into English), which are very helpful.

This volume presents not only the "how-to" of Japanese ceramics, but broader considerations of their significance within the context of world ceramics. Richard Wilson has not only trained extensively with Japanese potters, but is also thoroughly familiar with the many historical ceramic types which form the tradition which continues today. Virtually no art potters today remain unaffected by the tremendous impact of Japanese ceramics, and Wilson's book provides the contemporary ceramist with a reference that is at once useful and inspiring. The text is clear and straightforward in the explanatory sections while at the same time conveying to the reader the fascinating historical and cultural context on which the many techniques are based. The color illustrations are first class, and the technical photographs, illustrations and diagrams are clear, easy to read and appropriately placed. As in his earlier volume, The Art of Ogata Kenzan, Wilson has taken great pains to ensure that his information is both accurate and as complete as possible. A very basic handbook if you are looking for pottery techniques, but invaluable for the English/ Japanese translations and terminology in hiragana, katakana and kanji for the Western potter who travels to Japan. Not many books around that gives one access to this terminology to enable one to discuss ceramics with the Japanese potter.The terminology regarding forms, descriptions, glazes, underglazes, etc are exellent, with helpfull maps on kiln sites and the different wares found in the different regions of Japan.

This informative and delightful book is a must for any potter. With charming and clear illustrations the authors provide information on tools, workshops, forming, decorations, kilns, etc. Even common problems are illustrated! Towards the end of the book, drawings of various forms will prove a valuable resource to many a potter. This book has become a constant reference in my own studio. Please note that two languages are used in the book, Japanese and English, accenting the visual delight of this well designed book.

I happened to come across this book at my library while doing research for a paper. Once I started reading it, though, I couldn't put it down. There are so many great ideas in this book, from how to start incorporating a writing workshop in your classroom, to ideas for mini-lessons, to how to encourage peer collaboration. The book is very easy to read, and you will find yourself marking nearly every page for future reference. This book has been such a great resource, I am now ordering a copy for myself!

This book is an invaluable resource for classroom teachers. I have enjoyed reading it and have implemented a lot of the ideas very easily into my class. I can already see a difference in the writing of my students. Writing time has become so much more enjoyable for me and my students and we have all grown as a result of the ideas presented. There are a lot of tips that are easily implemented and the appendices are great. They give a list of books that are good for teaching mini-lessons on various topics. I highly recommend it.
