easy and pleasant to read. covers all basic modifications and improvements for off road use . gives a lot of information for the changes of the model through the years so very help full for someone who intents to buy an xj to know what to look for , but also for the owner to know the weak and the strong points of his jeep. you will read it more than once. inspirational and motivating.

If you are looking for a book that tells you how to do things, then you will have to keep looking. This book is about the why's and what upgrades you'll want or need as it relates to off-roading.
That was exactly what I was looking for when I ordered the book. Advice about engine choices, suspension lifts, and is my current axle enough for what I want to do. All of the questions I had about building my XJ were answered. Eric has even answered the questions I didn't realized I should have asked. (Such as, Do I want to upgrade to disk brakes? uh.. yes)

Other reviews have already said it better. But this really is the must-buy guide for anyone interested in customizing a Jeep Cherokee XJ. Even if you are experienced with off-road customizations, you'll likely learn a thing or two from this book. The guide is broken down into several different sections each dedicated to a different system and what you might consider upgrading there. Sections include suspension, wheels and tires, steering and brakes, axles and gearing, transfer case, engine and transmission, body upgrades, and skid plates and recovery.
The book continues by highlighting several featured Cherokees and describing the various parts and upgrades that went into them, all with detailed color photos. I've already got several new ideas for my own XJ after reading this builder's guide, and have discovered several cost saving alternatives to my original customizing plan. Basically, this book paid for itself.
This guide is worth every penny. Buy it.

In one word : EXCELLENT! In a litlle more words : this book is a perfect realisation of a designer's dream. Each chapter, written by a different author, gives you all the insights and reflexions of the artist upon its work, and the way he/she uses inspiration, and , on the same time, they introduce you to a programming tool in a very clear way by giving a documented example of code.
Lia's introduction to Director/Lingo is amazingly direct, simple and clear and gives a very nice resulting piece of work.
Golan Levin's chapter in very inspirational, he somehow takes the intuitive approach of his former professor John Maeda from MIT, but goes further in explanations. He takes the step between idea and code, giving you a "double-scaled" example : a simpler code in DBN (Deisgn By Numbers), and a more complex and powerfull one in Java. The resulting piece is again brilliant, as is G. Levin.
I do think that there is a strong editorial approach in this book : it's to give each artist the space to express him/herself without the necessity of a global view. In fact, I think this is one of the best aspects : it shows you that there is no "global approach" to generative design. Instead, everyone is playing with their favorite tool, or constructing new tools in order to escape the uniformisation process of digital design.
It is true that some parts may be found on the web, but not everyone can be in direct contact with those artists, so I found their explanations of their own work very inspirational and i think it was a great idea to ask the artists to remix each other's works and to comment on them. (Btw, the reader is also invited to do so, and all code is availlable on the web).
Conclusion : a BRILLIANT and ORIGINAL approach to digital design, and probably one of the most usefull book on this particular matter.

An excellent and original book with interesting subject matter. A great source of innovative approaches to experimental image making and design. I found all of the tutorials to be easy to follow and enlightening, especially Lias work with Director. Being able to go "behind the scenes" with one of the creators of Turux.org and see how some of those amazing Shockwave pieces were made is invaluable. The personal essays were all very inspirational and interesting to read as well. This book is highly recommended for those who want to take their artwork into interesting new directions. I hope Friends of Ed makes more art/essay/tutorial books like this in the future because the format is great!

I think this book is a great idea, so three stars. ... Here we have yet another collection of chapters by designers who haven't communicated with each other, and apparently don't have a strong editor with an overall vision, so the book doesn't develop an idea throughout. That's fine if you like the rockstar approach, but why not just look at these guys' websites instead?
The problem with this is that there's just nothing new here. Everything here, and I mean everything, is available on the web, especially if you make contact with people and learn from work they've done.
Still, it's nice to see a somewhat unusual topic get a whole book, and Golan Levin is a genius, full stop, so I'm glad he's getting noticed.

Best Money I've ever spent........2004-09-10
I am a 4th year industrial design student in Melbourne and reciently bought the 4x4 Chaos book. It is nothing short of brilliant and I recomend it to anyone who has a working knowledge of photoshop and 3dsmax. I was laging for inspiration and have always been interested in abstract style art. This book gave me a HUGE second wind and my work picked up instantly. I have read it three times now and enjoyed it every time. In fact I was so impressed that I have just a few days ago I bought the 'Light' and the 'Life' titles in this series. I also use flash and illustrator so I'm sure they will be just as helpful for that software. I feel that you dont even really need to be near a computer to enjoy and benefit from these books. If I was going on holidays or camping or whatever I would take the book with me and read it.....its that good. Like the reviews before me have said, these books are not step by step, far from it, they are more about process and methodoliges and therefore far more valuable. There are so many step by steps out there..... but how many personal process accounts?

people dismissing this book because it does not provide step by step instructions are entirely missing the point of Brian and the other designers motivation in this book. You only have to look at a quote from him to see what I mean...

The book is inspirational, it shows what can be achieved, I find it strange that people expect a step-by-step account of how to create a work of art?!?!
many pics, little knowledge.......2002-03-04
High hopes, big disappointment. I expected to find some deep knowledge on composition and design strategies. What i found were many pictures, but no real design secrets. The text is a little bit like "i created this strange object, i kinda liked it so i then did this and that. That was not quite it, so i did another this and that, looks better now."
The authors are good designers, no doubt, but this book won't help you improve your own work. There is no concept behind this book, the authors don't even know why they are writing this book. There already isn't much text in this book and about a third of that is being wasted with the authors wondering what the publisher and the readers actually expect of them and what the other three authors will come up with.
And about chaostheory and nanotechnology and all that: you'll learn more by reading an editorial review on the back of a book on these...

that the first review written for this book is so negative.....
with that much said, if you are looking to learn, training manual style, this book will not help you. If that is what you want,buy a New Rider's 3DMax book and a Photoshop classroom in a book, study art and design for about a year, get cozy with the software, terms, etc, then come back and make this purchase, at $34.99 it is a steal.
So, if you are interested in reading how some of the most creative(Brian Taylor is awesome - - check www.rustboy.com) minds in the design/graphic industry function, get this book quick. It is a book done buy creative folks for creative folks, it is not written by software technicians.
IT IS NOT A USERS MANUAL!!!!
I found the writing style of this book, like most Friends of Ed books (I have two others) to be extremely personal and inviting, I couldnt put it down. Add to that the gorgeous look, and HIGH QUALITY of the works displayed, it is truly a treasure. As a graduating design student working on my SeniorProject, this book could not have come along at a better time.

the CD which accompanies the book is also excellent, it comes with fully editable Photoshop files, etc, so the tutorials are in there, and they are excellent!!!

Inspirational Artbook on How to Create "Trendy" 3D Artwork........2002-02-15
I really enjoyed this book immensely, please note if you are new to Digital Art this book will be of help, BUT is not a step-by-step guide. This book is more for the intermediate-advance user who knows their way around a "Digital Computer". The book was written as a stepping stone, to explore and create your own art within the confines of Geometry and Chaos, which is really the merging of Photoshop and 3D Programs. If you are looking to be spoon feed, this book is not for you. There is a gold-mine of techniques in the book, and you only need your imagination, and some proficiency in Photoshop and sometype of 3D Program (3D Studio Max, Carrera, Infiniti-D etc.)
If you have ever downloaded any wallpapers in this style, and admire these types of images, as well as like futuristic ideas, you will treasure this book!

This is a very thorough and easy to understand book. It is extremely well written. It covers more than the Jeep vehicles themselves, it also covers Jeep accessories and how to use them, as well as all the basics of four-wheelin'. I highly recomend this book to anyone interested in Jeeps and their capabilities.

As with any current Jeep book that has been on the market for a while and has been reviewed for newer Jeep model information.....info on the newest Wrangler, the coil sprung TJ, is slim at best. Info on the Grand Cherokee almost non existent, except in the listing of OEM parts. Therefore it is only three stars for any YJ/TJ owner...As always, a great book for CJ owners!!! 5 stars for CJ readers.

This is a great book if you are jsut getting into Jeepin, and don't really know (or understand) all the lingo or issues with building up your rig. It also gives you some great ideas for mods and the upgrade path to follow.

A soild book, could be better.......2003-03-10
I bought this book pretty much to get some inspiration and ideas. While it does not showcase a hell of a lot of art like I had wished it would, it's still a good read if you want to see the creative and technical process that each of the four designes go through to produce an image.
The tutorials are well set out and assume you know your way around photoshop and illustrator, which was ok for me. It's not the sort of book you want to get if your interested in learning photshop or illustrator, but for anyone who has a working knowlage of the programs it's cool to see how these guys get their final results.
Personally I think there could have been a bit more art/design work showcased and some other designer in place of Nick Higgens who cant seem to accept that the other designer sometimes include elements in their images just because, it looks good, but overall it's a solid effort.

Conceived by Maurice Wilks of the Rover Motor Company as Britain's answer to the ubiquitous Jeep, the Land-Rover made its bow in 1948. In accord with Wilk's desires it was more versatile than the Jeep, making it the ideal farming and countryside vehicle — perhaps the first-ever sport-utility. An explosion of different body styles and wheelbase lengths soon enriched the range of this popular off-roader, as did diesel and even V-8 engines. The Series 2 version was introduced in 1958 and the Series 3 in 1971. Special forward-control and military versions only increased the range of tasks this amazing vehicle could accomplish. The original Land-Rover rolls on into the 21st Century, now styled as the Defender.
