a great snapshot into the grandparent/children relationship........1999-08-28
a perfect coffee table book or present.
"Grandparents. . ." is heartwarming.......1998-10-07
I was moved by this book. I happen to be one of the grandaughters featured in this book, and I hate to admit this, but I really wouldn't have picked it up, but since I was given a free copy, I read, and it made me appreciate the relationship between my grandfather and me. Now everyone that has picked it up, wants a copy. It really is touching.
Poignantly written, beautifully photographed stories of love.......1998-07-19
This is a delightfully written book filled with poignant reflections of love betweem grandparents and grandchildren. In just a page or two, Carol Abrams captures the essence of these relationships and the photography illuminates the stories. As a recent grandmother, I readily identify with the unconditional love these grandparents share with the reader and only hope that my grandaughter will bond with me in a similar fashion.
Beautifully presented book blending warmth & nostalgia........1998-06-18
I was so touched by "Grandparents & Grandchildren, Shared Memories" that I began sending a copy to each of my family members--then to friends who are grandparents. The recipients are all so delighted with this "treasure" that I thought I might share my idea with others. It's a beautifully presented book, blending warmth and nostalgia through engaging vignettes. Each charming chapter reassures us that what seems ordinary is potentially profound. Kudos to Carol Abrams & Ferne Margulies for a gem of a book!
The book lets you into the lives of the families selected.......1998-06-10
This wonderful book is not just another coffee table photography book. The stories behind the photographs explore the special relationships many grandparents share with their grandchildren. Some have made incredible sacrifices in stepping into the role of parent, when their own children failed to fill that role. The devotion is so heartwarming. Reading these stories makes one stop and cherish their own special relationships with family. It is a book I know I will look at over and over again.

wish i'd known what kind of pictures were in the book.......2002-06-12
when i saw the book cover, i immediately thought the book would be a great father's day gift for my daughter to give my husband. when the book arrived, i was surprised to see that on each page, there was a naked dad with a naked baby. i found it to be a little distasteful, and i was frustrated that nowhere in the amazon book description was it mentioned that the book contained nude dad/baby pictures. while some might find the book fascinating and sweet, i wish i'd had more information on the book before purchasing it. if i had, i wouldn't have bought it.
New Perspective.......2000-11-01
This book is a must-have for new fathers.
It highlights the social, mental and emotional evolution of what it is like becoming a father which most anyone can relate to. The black and white pictures are incredibly tasteful and expressive.
A Joyous New Look at Fatherhood.......2000-08-29
I was transported to a higher level of consciousness as I viewed the exquisite photographs of fathers and their children, and read the tender, hopeful and caring words that accompany them. This book will not only lift your heart, it will inspire and encourage fathers to express their love and tenderness for their children in ways that fathers of past generations were often unable to do. I hope that many fathers (and mothers too!) of the current generation of children will enjoy this book and identify with the wonderful fathers who participated in its creation. We all need to celebrate and encourage good, loving parenting whenever we see it, and this book presents us with a perfect opportunity to do that.
Wonderful in several ways.......2000-08-21
This book deserves all of its rave reviews. In addition, it's a terrific teacher of portrait photography. I know that I have tried for years to take pictures of loved ones that could show even half of what I was feeling toward my subjects.
So how does he do it? Smith's portraits of beautiful dads and their delicious babies succeed magnificently for a variety of reasons. He uses light and shadow to make a point: for balance and harmony. If a dad's face is partially obscured in darkness, the beaning grim on his baby's face assures the viewer of the dad's (unseen-by-us) big smile.
Where a muscled fatherly arm is in view, there is the pudgy softness of the baby's arm. One feels the strength of dad, the vulnerability of baby, and is thrilled with the photo. Torsos, either trim or pudgy, are nearly always balanced and complemented by one another. A dad holds a baby in one hand, and the solidity of the dad's legs - and the calm face of the baby - assure us that the child is safe.
Another thing I loved about this book is that it reveals mature bodies - not for their conventional "perfectness," but as vessels of love and (in the dads' cases) protection. It's about bodies, but is never voyeuristic.
But it is the faces which are so arresting. Study this book, not only for its message of love, hope, and caring - but for the great advice it offers on how to begin to take much better, if not downright successful, pictures!
Finally... A Book About Men and Their FEELINGS.......2000-06-03
I found the photographs of fathers with their babies touched my heart. As a mother, I know how DEEPLY I feel for my two children. This book allowed me to see that men, too, are profoundly touched and forever changed when their child is born. I enjoyed reading each father's short narrative about how they cried, felt joy, enriched their relationships with the child's mother, and that they'd rather stay at home with their family than go out with "the guys". A GREAT Father's Day gift or Father-to-be gift!

Book Description
No one photographs babies like celebrated Australian photographer Anne Geddes. From the launch of her first photographic greeting cards and calendar in 1992 to the phenomenal success of her books Down in the Garden and Until Now, her unique photos have touched millions of people worldwide. Now, in her stunning new full-color hardcover book, Pure, Anne achieves a completely new level of photographic artistry and vision.Four years in the making, Pure offers breathtaking images that intimately evoke the wonder of the first precious days and weeks of life. With eyes tightly shut, in wrinkly new skin, unaffected by and unaware of the world that awaits them, these newborns hint at the mysterious world before birth. The miracle of life shines from each sumptuous, oversized page. Geddes presents these babies in their purest form to "emphasize the fact that they are vulnerable, fragile, and very precious human beings." The revealing images of these "just borns" epitomize the words that accompany them-"Unique," "Perfect," "Extraordinary."Mothers, too, are shown anew through Anne Geddes' lens. Real women in the full bloom of pregnancy radiate serenity and promise. Mothers enfold babies in their arms, highlighting the beautiful bond between them. They reveal our shared humanity-beautiful, vulnerable, loved. Pure is a powerful reminder that we all begin life small, innocent, and full of potential.Pure showcases Anne Geddes' extraordinary talent and her gift with newborn babies as never before. It is a celebration of life and birth sure to become a treasured volume the world over.
Customer Reviews:
Beautifully done..........2007-02-14
SOME critics here might say that Anne Geddes subscribes to the idea that women, even pregnant women, should be thin and beautiful. I say she used all types of women. What about the thick dark, dark skinned woman 2/3 through the book? The women aren't extremely thin--they're healthy--and not what is typically thought to be beautiful in American culture. They had slicked back hair, stretch marks, and thick veins...
It was beautiful and real.
Very well done--lovely, tasteful photographs. Very moving.
Great Book.......2007-01-27
Anne Geddes always delivers! I love the book. The images are powerful and sweet.
Delusional fantasy .......2005-12-14
I'll grant you that Anne can take some good pictures of babies but this book is "Pure" BS. If you want to show the joy and miracle that is the bringing forth of new life show it in a realistic forum. The only thing I saw in this book was a disgusting glorification of how our society feels women should look even if they have a baby. As a mother I am deeply offended and upset by these images. This is a gross, hollow misrepresentation of how mothers and children should be. I doubt any of these models even have children themselves. You cannot capture the magic of motherhood in a cold studio with a shallow anorexic model posing as something she is so obviously not. Where are all the stretch marks, the baby fat, the look of shear exhaustion outweighed by the unimaginable joy of the new life that we've brought into the world.
WHAT A BOOK AND DON'T HAVE ANY WORDS TO DESCRIBE IT.......2005-06-23
At first, I didn't want other Anne Geddes, but finally decided wanted another one. Did some research on this book particular and love it. Don't even believe the read reviews on this book. Thank you.
Great.......2004-12-10
I received the book in excellent condition and it arrived very quickly. Thank you.
Book Description
"Ewald's project is wonderful because it lets kids speak for themselves; instead of being passive subjects for the lens, they eagerly harness it to the engines of their imaginations." -Andy Grundberg, The New York Times Written for parents and teachers, I Wanna Take Me a Picture is filled with anecdotes about Ewald's work that makes it an accessible and practical guide to getting children involved in photography. Striking photographs of children's work show the benefits of her program. "Young people know joy, sorrow, and loss. By looking at their photographs and talking about making them, they begin to realize their lives have importance. This book is needed!" -Deborah Willis, author of Reflections in Black "A treasure of photos taken by the author and her pupils, plus stirring testimonies from children around the globe who faced tragedy through the lens of a camera." -City Limits Wendy Ewald, who lives with her husband and son in Red Hook, New York, is currently a fellow at the Center for Documentary Studies in Durham, North Carolina. Alexandra Lightfoot received her Ed.D. from Harvard University in 1998.
Customer Reviews:
Fabulous!.......2007-01-04
I absolutely love this book! I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. The story is captivating, and I find myself lost in the text.
But I did not purchase this book for leisure reading. I was searching for a book that is an instructional guide to photographic projects for children. This book is not written in the step-by-step format I was looking for. I wanted fully layed out lesson plans, etc. But I was not dissappointed. All of the information I needed on conducting photo projects with kids is in this book. It is just more of a story format. A VERY enjoyable story!
Reading Pictures .......2005-02-19
This book is an outstanding guide for the art teacher eager to teach not only creative photography, but how to connect, understand, and tell a story through a picture. This book teaches expression through exercises with video and poetry, how to read a photograph, to have children from different cultures learn from each other from self portrait exercises in the shoes of different ethnicities.
Although I found this to be extremely interesting, this book isn't what I had expected. I am not a teacher, but I have a child interested in photography and since I am not a photographer myself I was looking for a guide for us both to learn and enjoy together. This book, although enjoyable, shows examples for different assignments for more of a class room setting, not a parent and child learning together . Also this is a book with only a couple pages of actual images and more text. I do feel this book is a blessing for teachers who may be looking for a creative and meaningful experience for their students to express themselves through art.
Great resource for teachers!.......2002-09-04
This book guides you through teaching literacy through photography to children, for which Ms. Ewald is well known. It is a fantastic resource for someone who wants to really teach the heart and soul of photography, as well as visual literacy - a great introduction to photography but even a seasoned photographer can learn something new from this book. Ms. Ewald takes you through her curriculum step by step as she would teach her students and gives you the tools and tips to pass it on. This is not a technical "how to" photo book, there are plenty of those out there, this book is truly a gem. I have used Ms. Ewald's book as the basis for my own workshops with children and I now have adults asking me to take the course! I can't say enough great things about it...
Book Description
Almost every life is profoundly touched--and complicated--by a sibling relationship. In intimate childhood portraits of brothers and sisters, Siblings joins Nick Kelsh's exquisite black-and-white photography--free of all sentimentality--to Anna Quindlen's wry and tender essays. Here are forgotten moments, naked emotions and conflicting urges, to be treasured in the rediscovery. Infant toes curl against each other, brothers fight tooth and nail, a toddler views a new baby with horror and later touches it with love. The raw reality of their interactions, transcending the children's own rley, will become first the girl's advocate and defender, then the closest thing to a loving mother Arley will ever have. What happens to Arley and her husband, Dillon LeGrande, is the stuff of legend. He will break out of prison on a terrifying errand, but is it to claim his wife and their baby daughter or to destroy them? His love will put them into nearly unthinkable danger--danger Arley and even Annie will find too compelling to ignore, too seductive to flee. No other writer has Mitchard's fierce, brave, and tender insights into the bonds of mothers and daughters. Larger than life, yet the very stuff of life itself, The Most Wanted is the tour de force that the millions who treasure The Deep End of the Ocean have been waiting for.

Not just for those with siblings.......1999-03-03
Though I don't have siblings the way this book describes, I just gave my daughter the gift of a brother. This wonderful book helped me understand how meaningful their relationship will be, and the photos moved me almost to tears in places. It will make a great baby gift for those having second or subsequent children.
Everyone with a sibling will relate to this book!.......1999-01-01
After reading an excerpt from this book, I purchased six copies, one to send to each of my brothers and my husband's sisters. The photographs are snapshots of life in a family that capture the true essence of sharing your space with a sibling. Alone they create a message that is funny, touching, reminiscent. Combined with Ms. Quindlen's prose, they become a treasure of memories that will have you laughing, crying and nodding your head, "Yes. That is just what it was like!"
This book is a must read for anyone with siblings.......1998-10-31
This book was able to capture the unique relationship between siblings. Going into detail and siting personal examples; Anna Quindlen was able to make me laugh at my own memories of childhood and the relationship with my sibling. The pictures by Nick Kelsh are able to capture the genuine relationships between siblings in it's most sincere view without having a "staged" look to it. I throughly enjoyed reading this book and really look forward to sharing it with my sister as well as reading it again and again....
Book Description
Together, the pictures and words of You Are My World lend a whole new meaning to the phrase baby talk. By pairing lovely black-and-white photographs of infants with captions that reflect reality as seen through their newborn eyes, the book celebrates the continually miraculous interaction that occurs between babies and the most significant people in their young livestheir mothers and fathers.
Children's minds are molded by experience, and science tells us that the way a parent touches, holds, looks at, and responds to a baby has a lifelong impact on the way that this brand-new person will come to see the world and his or her place within it. You Are My World gratefully acknowledges the profoundly shaping influence that a parent's love and attention have on a baby's mental and emotional development.
Your love is my first teacher, says one of the adorable infants portrayed here. Like each of the book's captions, this simple but poetic statement captures and illuminates every baby's desire for, receptivity to, and sheer delight in a parent's love. Featuring a die-cut frame in which parents can place a photo of their own child, You Are My World will become a treasured family keepsake.
Customer Reviews:
The greatest book for new parents ever!.......2007-05-19
This book is soo... good I am amazed it isn't a best seller or winning every award in baby books!. I just had a baby and this book made me cry..it evokes the feeling I have for my baby/now toddler that I could never express, but felt it so strongly!!. I feel I am quite artistic as I am a writer of pop songsBlue Guitar...but this book touches your heart in some precious way I could never imagine. I love this book and send it to all my friends having babies! Amy.. thank you WOW!
You Are My World - A Gem.......2007-04-15
You Are My World vividly captures with heart-melting photographs and disarmingly simple words the critical importance a parent's love and attention have on a baby's development. The author effectively uses the point of view of the infant, but she also interweaves, with a light hand, the best research that has been undertaken on the emotional importance of the parent-child bond. This little gem of a book would make a lovely gift for new or soon-to-be parents. It can also be enjoyed by those of us whose children have grown--You Are My World brought back with immediacy the intensity of those magical first days, weeks and months that I shared with my new born son. The author shows so much sensitivity to what goes on in a baby's mind, that I hope she follows up with a book on the world of toddlers.
You Are My World : How a parent's love shapes a baby'd mind.......2007-03-02
The pictures are out standing and the content is food for thought and when you finish with this book and your baby gets to the picture looking stage they always love to see the baby. Another bond is made looking with them at the pictures.

Customer Reviews:
what type of photographer are you?.......2002-09-02
I think the question is whether you are an advanced amateur or pro photographer already-someone who is looking for advanced diagrams, etc. on studio setups, etc. That is NOT the type of book this is. For someone-such as myself-who is self-taught and trying to learn or solidfy an understanding of lighting, this book is an excellent tool. It does include exercises, but by no means do they take up the bulk of the text. Most of the text is lean, clear writing that helps you understand the characteristics and behavior of light, some different choices you have for lighting, etc. As such, the book very much fills a niche for a certain audience because unlike other books, this one attempts to teach the foundations of photographic lighting. And it does that job well.
Don't waste your money.......2002-07-10
I regret buying this. Its partly my fault for not reading more reviews. Its also partly the problem with buying on line. In a book store had I looked at this book I would have seen that is merely a lesson plan for teachers with out an idea. The book offers almost no information. Instead the premise is that the 'student' should go out and do the exercises. In other words, learn it by yourself.
Perhaps if you are a teacher without an idea you could use this for lesson plans. The authors are an example of university teachers who publish garbage to appear to advance their status on campus. Otherwise this book is useless.
Good for very general and basic information........2001-06-29
This is not a good book if you want in-depth information on the subject of lighting. However, it does give a nice overview of the major areas of photographic lighting. Unfortunately, it leaves the reader wanting more information and further explanations. I felt this book was a good read for a novice photographer, but not someone who knows the basics, but wants a more in-depth view of the broader categories of lighting.
Essential Skills - Photographic Lighting.......2000-06-16
This book is fantastic! It covers all aspects of photographic lighting from film, filters, exposure, compensation, zone system to creative techniques. The terminology is easy to understand and techniques explained in a "no nonsense" format. Excellent for beginners to intermediate photographers.
I have had this book for a few months now and through practicing and completing the revision exercises, I have a better understanding of the techniques used for photograhic lighting situations - location and studio (lighting ratios etc)
I hope they publish many more books like this one.
Thanks Amazon.
Book Description
Nana, Grandma, Granny, Grandmother: by whatever name she goes, she holds a special place in our hearts and minds. In this unique book, a celebration in photography and prose, photographer Jayne Wexler and writer Lauren Cowen give grandmothers their due, bringing them front and center to recognize their importance in our lives. The first photography book to focus on the subject, Grandmothers follows Daughters & Mothers and Girlfriends, books by the same author-photographer team that have sold almost 350,000 copies.
Through 23 insightful essays and powerful black-and-white portraits of grandmothers with their grandchildren, the life-affirming bond between the two generations is explored and honored. Grandmother/actress Olympia Dukakis, grandmother/author Judy Blume, grandson/NBA star Steve Francis, and granddaughter/musician Alicia Keys are among the grandmothers and grandchildren of diverse ages, cultures, and locales profiled in this inspiring collection. As millions of baby boomers become grandparents in the next few years, and as aging takes on new meaning in today's society, Grandmothers will surely have a huge appeal.

Great Mothers Day Gift.......2006-01-08
I bought this book for my step-mother to thank her for being a wonderful grandmother to my children. It is filled with poignant stories about all kinds of grandmothers illustrated with stunning black and white photographs which really capture the essence of the grandmother-grandchild relationship. It is the kind of coffee table book you can really enjoy picking up from time to time and getting lost in the emotional stories. I recommend it as a gift for any grandmothers or grandmothers-to-be.
Photographs full of love........2005-11-01
A tribute to Grandmothers. This is a beautiful set of photographs and prose that should almost be considered good poetry. It's a story of 23 grandmothers and their grandchildren. Sometimes the grangmothers are famous, like the author Judy Blume, sometimes the grandchildren are famous like big name NBS star Steve Francis. Sometimes they are just grandmothers.
It reminded me of the recent research explaining how important grandmothers were in cave man days. They could babysit the grandkids while momma was out gathering food.
This is a beautifully produced book, and just in time for the Christmas season. If you can't think of anything else for Gramma or whatever you call her, you could do a lot worse than this book. I suspect you'll see it displayed on her coffee table.

Carol Saline and Sharon J. Wohlmuth once again explore the familial bonds of women in this charming follow-up to their 1994 smash hit Sisters. In words and pictures, Mothers and Daughters reveals the varied and perennial nature of this complicated family bond. Most of the daughters in this collection are adult women. Some are stepchildren, others adopted from other nations, and still others, including model Cindy Crawford, author Margaret Atwood, and cartoonist Cathy Guisewite, are famous. Wohlmuth's posed, black-and-white photos of the two generations reveal relationships that rival the intensity of romance. In these pictures, some mothers curl protectively around their daughters, some of the women stand side-by-side, embracing like old friends, and occasionally the subjects stand apart from one another, like partners in a difficult marriage. Saline's interviews probe delicately beneath the surface of the portraits. "Do you love your mother, Jacki?" Saline asks one subject, who answers, "without question." But when Saline asks, "Do you like your mother?" Jacki replies more ambiguously: "Well...." This book will inspire mothers and daughters to reflect on the importance of their own relationship. --Maria Dolan
Book Description
When Carol Saline and Sharon J. Wohlmuth created Sisters in 1994, they took America by storm, captivating countless readers with their poignant exploration of sisterhood. In this beautiful new volume, they turn their empathy and perception to a territory perhaps even more intimate--the intense connection shared by mothers and daughters.
The profoundly personal experiences of the women portrayed in these original essays and photographs illuminate a relationship that is awe-inspiring in its power and depth. Some of these women are well known: Cindy Crawford, Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Margaret Atwood, and Jamie Lee Curtis all speak of their own relationships in these pages. There is also wisdom to be found in the words of a ninety-six-year-old great-grandmother with her nine daughters; a mother and daughter who have fled the war in Bosnia for an uncertain future in New York; and a woman who received a kidney transplant as a last gift from her dying mother. Whether the speakers are famous or not, their stories and portraits express universal feelings of tenderness, pride, and a love so fierce that it is sometimes painful. Mothers and Daughters is a stunning and evocative tribute to this unbreakable bond.

Mothers and Daughters.......2007-06-28
I received this book as a gift when it was first published. Thanks to Amazon.com I was able to find a new copy of an out of print book for a Christmas gift to give to someone special.
Occasionally Uplifting, Often Contentious.......2000-12-17
I purchased this book as a holiday gift for my child's teacher. She has a close but intense relationship with her mother, and I thought she would enjoy the topic. Now, I have my fingers crossed and am holding my breath a bit. The black and white photography is beautifully compelling. At times, it is excruciatingly sad (for example, the photo of a woman who has lost her daughter to a drunk driver sits alone in her child's room, another of a daughter hugging her mom's gravestone.)
The accompanying short profiles/ stories are tersely, crisply written. They can be truly uplifting, like one very personal tale, which recounts a woman's battle with breast cancer and how she later overcomes her shame in her daughters seeing her post-surgery breasts. Another tale tells of a daughter who has cared for her ailing mother at home for decades, changing diapers and preparing pureed food. Virtually all of the relationships, however, reveal palpable strains of deep-seated anger, regret or misunderstanding. Many of the women have suffered intensely; many have healed from their own bad marriages and divorces.
For a young woman like myself who now has a small daughter and who recently lost a mother, the book was absorbing though it strangely lacked hope. My favorite profile was of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg; she seems like a type A mom but happy with her family and the personal and career choices she has made. Her daughter teases her mother, but seems secretly grateful for the upbringing she received. You sense that they appreciate each other, despite differences.
If you are considering this book for a friend, it would probably be most appreciated by someone who has survived many ups and downs with her mom. Those mother and daughter pairs who pal around together and who consider themselves good friends may be strangely put off by the tragedy and simmering warfare in between many of the pictures.
This book is a tribute to all mothers and daughters.......1998-11-04
This book is special to me because my Great Grandmother and her daughters (as well as my grandmother who raised me) are in the book. My "Granny" will be 100 years old in 1999 and has been an inspiration to us all. I've often thought her story should be told and while this is a very short version among many I was pleased with the gentle way they captured her essence.
