It also includes a chapter on virtual scenery and lighting.
The principles of drafting are explained with simple drawings from the world of scenery as well as many examples of more complex draftings from some of the finest scenic designers working professionally. Patricia Woodbridge has worked professionally in theatre, film and television, and uses examples from all industries throughout the book. Since the examples of drafting are taken from a wide variety of different scenic applications, it gives the young designer a survey of scenic career possibilities.

Covers traditional hand drafting techniques as well as computer-based drawing programs

The next required theatre drafting standard text.......2003-07-15
This is the most complete and practical drafting text book that I have ever read. Not only does it illustrate excellent drafting styles and techniques, it also provides step-by-step instruction on how to create each kind of projection. I believe it raises the bar to all other books exploring this same topic. In my opinion, this book will eventually be included in all classes that prepare students for a professional technical performing arts career.

I
<3 this book.......2007-06-27
This book is great, if you want to be a costume designer or just interested in it this book is for you. It has a lot of good pictures and just really awesome!
Fabulous, full-color, expertly written and designed.......2003-07-26
This book is invaluable for anyone interested in learning about costume design--from the designers themselves. Fourteen highly accomplished designers discuss their craft in highly engaging and informative interviews, conducted by the author, Deborah Nadoolman Landis, herself an Academy Award-nominated costume designer. This is the kind of stuff that is usually neglected in "Making Of" film books and Hollywood history tomes. The interviews are augmented by hundreds of color and black-and-white photographs and costume sketches, which in themselves are more than worth the price of the book. Highly recommended!
The best book on movie costume available.......2003-07-21
This book is ideal for anyone interested in fashion or costume, and the creative process that goes into the creation of design. Landis, a costume designer herself, interviews most of the best costume designers working in film today. So unlike other books on costume design, where you get one person's opinion on the craft--and that person is usually a critic or academic who doesn't really have experience working in the field--here you get straight information direct from the creative people themselves.
The pictures are fabulous, so I think this book has appeal for anybody interested in clothes, movies, or design. Obviously, it will be a necessity for anyone interested in costume design or interested in being a costume designer.
Although there is a section on Landis' work on such movies as Raiders of the Lost Ark and Coming to America, she has obviously expertly edited the interviews that make up the text of the book. It seems as if the reader is sitting in the living room of these famous costume designers, chatting casually about how they got started, what inspires them, and some of their most interesting professional experiences.
Phenomenal!.......2003-07-18
Besides Edith Head, how many costume designers can you actually name? This book is a phenomenal collection of interviews with some of the best working film costume designers. You get a rare insight into what it's like to design for the stars, collaborate with the director and other craftsmen/women on a film set. Hollywood is well represented, but international designers get their due here as well. Designers describe what it's like to design for the much-lauded period films and the often-overlooked costumes of contemporary films (the author is herself an Oscar-nominated costume designer for "Coming to America"). The book includes lots of color photos and illustrations. You don't have to be a film historian to appreciate it.
Film Costume Designers In Their Own Voices.......2003-07-18
The most recent book in Focal Press' Screencraft series, this book is a revealing look at the job of a film costume designer, told from the point of view of the practitioners. The names, faces and stories behind the most famous costumes from cinema are represented. From period films to contemporary, from mainstream to art films, from stylized costumes to naturalistic, the designers interviewed reveal their design process and the purpose of costume design, as well as what it's like working with stars and directors. The Academy Award nominated (if not winning) designers interviewed include: Theodora Van Runkle ("Bonnie and Clyde"), Italian designer Piero Tosi ("The Leopard"), Jeffrey Kurland ("Erin Brokovich"), the books author Deborah Nadoolman ("Raiders of the Lost Ark"), Ann Roth ("The Hours"), Japanese designer Eiko Ishioka ("Bram Stoker's Dracula"), Anthony Powell ("Tess"), Albert Wolsky ("All That Jazz"), Sandy Powell ("The Crying Game"), Gabriella Pescucci ("The Age of Innocence"), Ruth Carter ("Malcolm X"), Milena Canonero ("A Clockwork Orange"), James Acheson ("Dangerous Liaisons"), and Bob Ringwood ("Batman"). A fascinating behind the scenes look at a craft typically invisible to the audience. All of the designers deserve this long overdue recognition, and this book celebrates their work with interviews, color photos, and costume illustrations. Perhaps a future second volume might include interviews with designers Colleen Atwood, Patricia Norris and the design team of Jenny Beavan and John Bright?

Customer Reviews:
Splendid and Informative.......2007-06-01
Jaen's book was indeed very useful to me. I am neither a costume designer nor a student of costume design; I am a professor interested in the art and culture of costumes, and I learned much about the business and the practice of theatre costume design by reading this delightful book. While its principal aim is to help students and professionals alike with the construction and maintenance of their design portfolios, the book is also very informative about the aesthetics, culture, theory, and practice of costume design (as well as stage, sound, and lighting). Jaen illustrates his book with many diverse examples, including his own beautiful sketches. I recommend this book to those, like me, who are outside of the theatre world but who have an interest in learning how it is done from the inside.
Great resource for any theatre technician or designer!.......2007-02-06
My uncle ordered this book for me when I told him that I planned to interview for MFA Programs in Costume Design. This book was an indispensable resource while developing my portfolio. Although you could spend hours researching different portfolio options and blindly guess how you should prepare for interviews, this book will very clearly explain everything you need to do to make your best impression.
The book has five chapters: The first chapter outlines what a portfolio is, its purpose, simple do's and don'ts, and introduces you to various portfolio options (with many great pictures included). If you're more interested in developing a digital portfolio--the second chapter has all the necessary steps very simply explained. The third chapter (most important to me) is all about preparation for the portfolio's presentation. This chapter includes--like all the rest--simple do's and don'ts, resume preparation, and suggests that candidates create business/networking cards to hand out to potential employers/professors. The fourth chapter explains portfolio maintenance, how to choose the best work, self-assessment, and planning for jobs. Finally, the fifth chapter gives a short biography of each of the contributors and includes some pictures of their work. The last chapter was very helpful because it gave me an idea of what current graduate theatre students and theatre professionals are up to, what conventions they are attending, what committees they are in, etc.
This book is an exciting resource for the theatre student or professional looking to take their design/tech portfolio to the next level. If you carefully read through all of the information this book has to offer, I have no doubt you will be impressed with your newly assembled portfolio; giving you the confidence to succeed in your interviews.
Thanks for a great book Prof. Jaen!

Customer Reviews:
It gives what it promises.......2006-04-25
This is a great purchase for those who really need a foundation in the world of broadcast design. I have purchased other material from rich and glen before and they have really helped me out in alot of directions so once again my hat goes off to them. You get so much more for the price they charge and this book needs to be on your shelf. Great tips and insights!!!!!!!
Great Nuggets!.......2005-12-08
The latest On The Spot book from CMP Books titled Broadcast Graphics, their very informative and short book of the hottest tips, was very informative with great nuggets of useful information. Not too much in any one gulp yet still gives you the "aha" factor. This book focuses mostly on Photoshop and After Effects in the broadcast arena (hence the title) and they even say this book is for those in television. However, the book also delves into keying, Illustrator, and script automation - so there's a little something for everyone. Let's face it, as a filmmaker you need to have a solid understanding of just about every facet of production and post-production and this book, with it's quick tips, can be helpful in a pinch. It's another arsenal in your toolbox. I only wish they had a quick index listing their tricks so when I'm really in a pinch I don't have to search thru the book trying to remember what chapter I saw the helpful hint. All in all, a great productivity time saver and quick read.

Book Description
The Swiss theatre designer and theorist Adolphe Appia (1862-1928) has long been acclaimed in Europe as the most important innovator in the concept and use of stage lighting. Many of his ideas were extremely advanced for his time and have now been widely accepted and put into practice. Yet much of his important theoretical work has been difficult to obtain in English. This account, analysis and critical evaluation of the work of Appia demonstrates how his far-sighted imagination also embraced the fundamental reform of scenic design, the use of theatrical space, and a greatly expanded conception of the nature and possibilities of theatrical art.

Customer Reviews:
Really absolutely useless unless you are a total beginner.......2005-01-14
This book doesn't tell you when to use different effects, transitions, etc, but just how to physically do them in Windows Movie Maker or iMovie. Like literally how to do a wipe or a fade. The cd that comes with it is also really bad and you'll find yourself either laughing at it or bored out of your mind. This book isn't worth the money unless you're someone who's barely ever used computers and needs to know that you much drag and drop an effect to get it to work.
Fun and useful.......2004-02-13
This book starts with the basics. If you've never loaded a movie into your computer (like me) then the authors walk you through those steps. I found it to be a great help. I had never used Movie Maker before and was able to get into it pretty easily. You may need to get a book for iMovie or Movie Maker if you are new to these types of apps (doesn't teach these programs). But I was able to pick it up pretty easily.
This book is a cookbook of digital video recipes; you can skip around the book and choose the effect you want to achieve. The steps are thoroughly explained and easily performed. There are a bunch of creative suggestions sprinkled throughout the book. There are movies samples provided for your use for both iMovie and Movie Maker!
So you are probably wondering what types of effects you can achieve. A few of my favorites include:
Dealing with adverse lighting
Glamour shots
Sporting events
Vintage slapstick
Sound narrating
Rolling credits
The projects are fun and very well written. If you want to learn some new techniques to spice up your home movies then this book is for you. There are directions for exporting for use on DVD, CD-ROM or for the internet.
The CD has a ton of useful tools such as sound files, sample clips for all 50 projects, demo software.
Just What I Needed.......2003-10-08
I've got to admit that although I'm intrigued with digital video, I'm just a novice and find the whole video editing process a little intimidating. This book helped me over the hump: I found it to be a great resource for helping me create some cool effects by simply following the step-by-step instructions -- and there are certainly plenty of effects to choose from here. An added bonus is the included CD-ROM, which allowed me to preview each effect before I tried it with my own footage. I would definitely recommend this book.

Book Description
In By Design, twenty prominent feature film designers talk about their careers, their relationships with Hollywood directors, and how they formulated and executed the technical and aesthetic designs of their film projects. The interviews explore production design techniques and the total process of establishing the visual "look" of a feature film, including the design and creation of sets, finding locations, establishing the color scheme or palette of a film, and supervising the costumes, hairstyles, and makeup. The designers discuss in detail their work on many highly acclaimed and seminal works in the field, including North by Northwest, Chinatown, The Godfather, Barry Lyndon, Reds, Amadeus, Brazil, Blade Runner, and The Last Emperor. The interviewees talk about their relationships with the producer, director of photography, art director, construction crew, set decorator, property master, and costume designer, and how the team helps bring the director's vision to the screen. The interviews are presented in an order that gives the reader a historical perspective on the development of production design, from the studio era to contemporary productions. LoBrutto includes biographical background and a complete filmography of each subject, plus a glossary of terms that concern the design process. By Design investigates the visual style of films in a pragmatic and detailed manner usually overlooked by conventional film analysis, and will prove especially useful to film students and scholars, and all aspiring and experienced producers and directors.

Book Description
The Art of the Storyboard shows beginners how to conceptualize and render the drawings that will communicate continuity to the cinematographer, set designer, and special effects supervisor, or to create the skeletal outline around which an animated program is developed.
Using sketches of shots from classic films, from silents to the present, The Art of the Storyboard covers the history and evolution of this craft and discusses the essentials of translating one's vision onto paper, from the rough sketch to the finished storyboard. Over 100 illustrations from the author's and other storyboard artists' work illuminate the text throughout. Exercises at the end of each chapter help students to develop essential drawing and visualizing skills.
The Art of the Storyboard teaches basic drawing techniques and illustrates the use of perspective, light and shade, and depth of field needed in order to render the human figure in motion. In this book students are introduced to essential components of storyboarding, such as framing, placement of figures, and use of camera angles

Customer Reviews:
Pretty good book.......2006-07-02
This book was very helpful to me. I am a professional animator and storyboard/layout artist, even though I have a very good grasp of drawing, this book helped me improve my composition(balance, contrast, flow, etc) and cinematography skills. The illustrations are from great old time classics like Battleship Potemkin (which is frequently used as examples in top film schools across the world) and an numerous other examples. The simplicity of some of the drawings illustrates how you don't have to be the best artist to draw a good storyboard, other drawings show how you can do pretty psimple but photorealistic renderings in a few minutes. Although this is not the all in one stop for storyboarding, it is a must have for aspiring storyboard artists. The one thing that could use improvement is the discussion on perspective drawing, but this book helped me improve so much that I still give it 5 stars. Note: This is not a how to draw book, If you have a solid foundation in drawing, you will benefit more from this and similar books.
Profoundly dissapointing.......2002-11-28
Siggraph San Antonio was about to close up shop on its last day and I finally made my way to the bookstore. I had about 7 minutes to make my choices. One choice was a nicely done book on character animation in Flash, and the other was "The Art of the Storyboard" by John Hart Hart's book is one that I can truly say I regret buying. There is little of use inside, and some severely misleading bits as well. (For instance Hart tells us that it's the storyboard artist who determines light placement.) I was hoping for a book that would give me some information on generally used techniques for depicting camera moves, fades and other conventions. Instead we get pencil drawings cribbed from films that look more like fan-art than any storyboards I've ever seen or worked with.
Anyone wanting insights into how tho convey their cinematic vision to others would do well to steer clear of this volume.
Amateurish and unfocused.......2002-01-18
After searching for books on storyboarding for a class, I found and read a handful of them. This book was a big disappointment. For readers looking to learn about the CRAFT of storyboarding, I strongly recommend "From Word to Image" by Begleiter. However, if you like personal anecdotes, personal preferences, Hollywood history trivia, uninspiring graphics, and little teaching content, then Mr. Hart's "Art of Storyboard" will give you much of that. I am giving it two stars instead of one, because there are few books on storyboarding and because there is nonetheless some useful content (but it could have been put in 10 pages).
Storyboarding from the simple to the complex.......2001-09-24
This book covers storyboards ranging from the most basic to the most detailed. The author recreates frames from classic films--old and new--to illustrate how a storyboard can include light, movement, perspective, and shadow to offer a more complete view of the scene. I found this book to be as much about the art of observing, which is essential to anyone involved in the filmmaking process.
This is a book about storyboarding?.......2001-04-18
One of the main problems with books about storyboarding is that very few actually outline and explain how to execute it without going into too much theoretics. Like a cookbook, I would like to be instructed step-by-step on how to create storyboards: how to decide which angles best suit a written outline; differences in storytelling metric scenarios (quiet scenes, action scenes, etc.); and what would lead me to decide on how to visually set up a scene properly. All this book does is delve into the loooong history of different films, rambling on and on about significant key storyboard shots in the movie. Unfortunately, none of it is instructional. Worse yet, the examples the author uses are his own pencil sketches, which are lifted from actual scenes from an established movie. This does nothing for his credibility as a storyboard artist, especially if he didn't board the sequences himself. While it is important to explain specific key shots in a film to aspiring artists, using re-drawn sequences to fill an entire book is almost insulting to the very subject one is trying to learn from.

Essential Reading for Anyone in Any Aspect of Broadcasting.......2002-12-28
Oh, how I wish I could own this wonderful book, which is a favorite to peruse through at the library. The word "genius" is over-used, but it really applies to Dorfsman. This book has ample examples of this man's brilliance. When you think of CBS, chances are, you're thinking of the images of Dorfsman. The Eye. The Font. Everything anyone who watched CBS television or CBS radio from the 1950s to the 1970s knows what I'm talking about. Every aspect of that network's "look" was due to Dorfsman.
In an age when advertising seems more interested in impressing account executives than informing its audience, the classic work of Dorfsman provides an invaluable education. In fact, I'd bet if a radio or TV ad exec spent an hour looking at this book, seeking inspiration, he or she would probably be able to turn out much more effective ad campaigns than he or she are today. His copy ranged from the minimalist (A list of the numbers 1-15, with two crossed out, copy saying "These aren't ours," demonstrating how CBS dominated the daytime Nielsens) to the very convincing copy he generated to convince New Yorkers that they NEED to listen to WCBS with its new all-news format.
History demonstrates how effective this material was in the 1960s.
Invaluable! I'll take Dorfsman over Degars any day.

I had the pleasure of working with Lou, and I have nothing but great things to say about this book. I cherish my copy. I am very dissapointed to learn that this book is no longer in print. This book has so much to offer anyone in advertising, communication, and broadcast media.
