The talented young photographer Karim Konrad approaches his images with a hyperkinetic and unapologetic insouciance. Karim's visual assault on the senses is overwhelming, and his models are ripe earthy sensuality. An orgy of color exploding with sex and energy makes this collection by a gifted newcomer. • Johannes cuddles alongside a photograph of Greta Garbo and a mirrored disco ball wearing a pair of striped suspenders • Colored-candy letters intended for a birthday cake are affixed to Mario, making him an even tastier treat than he is already • Josh finds himself in high heels, peering into the work of retro physique photographer Champion • Ivo surrenders himself in a black sleep mask, a jockstrap and orange rubber gloves There's a truthful playfulness in everything Karim shoots. Karim referred to the book you're holding as "a declaration of love to Berlin.

    Book Description

In a unique photographic diary that spans nine years and several cities, photographer Reed Massengill has chronicled the coming of age of his model and friend Brian Hess, a very handsome and charismatic young man. Massengill began photographing Brian in 1992 in Knoxville, Tennessee, shortly after Brian's high school graduation. During the intervening years, as the photographer and model became friends, Massengill's portraits of Brian documented his radical physical transformation. His hair was bleached, shaved and re-grown several times. Tattoos, piercings and scarifications further adorned his body and dramatically altered his appearance from year to year. Massengill's portraits have ranged from pensive and introspective to playful and wildly erotic.

A GREAT suty beturn the work of the model and the photographer ... this is very well done

    A MUST TO OWN

    5 out of 5 stars A Thing Of Beauty.......2004-08-18

Reed Massengill here has photographed a model named Brian for a nine-year period, from 1992 to 2000. A recent high school graduate, he must have been around 18 when the first photographs were shot. Over this time frame Brian changes, both in his body and facial features. Though by no means a gym bunny, he apparently worked out, developing more muscle, and also got heavy into body piercing and tattoos as well. He tried out a lot of different hair styles, growing longer hair, then getting bleached and buzzed. Some of the pictures are quite wonderful, many of them are very erotic, some are funny and a couple of them approach being silly. But the model always comes across as being alive and seems to be having a great time. This is obviously a collaboration. He gives as much to these photo sessions as the photographer does.

Mr. Massengill manages to shoot dozens of photos of this young man with practically no repetition, no small accomplishment. The artist says in the introduction to this book that he would like to photograph Brian for many years to come. It would be interesting to see what look he finally settles on and how both his body and face change with age. We can only hope that life with all its unknowns doesn't take the great zest for living that Brian has that is so obvious in these photos.

3 out of 5 stars Beautiful Pictures and an Interesting Concept.......2002-10-01

I noticed this book the last few times I browsed through several book stores in my area. Each time it stood out as if trying to catch my attention. I finally gave in and went through the book, first looking through the pictures then reading the introduction explaining the concept of the book's meaning. I was amazed to discover that the photographs in the book were of the same person. Due to the extreme differences the model Brian had in appearance, I had assumed that the photographer Reed Massengill had simply decided on making a picture book on various young men all named Brian. This really impressed me as the book started out with a young, relatively clean-cut man who gradually alters his appearance with varying degrees of hair styles and a progression of tattoos and piercings. I think this book is a nice window into the life of a 20 something year old man going through many identity choices in the last decade of the 2000 millennium. Not a traditional coffee table book by any means, I think Brian: A Nine Year Photographic Diary is a nice concept book that should be appreciated for it's lensing of a person living through a specific point in history.

4 out of 5 stars From Beauty to Beast - The Journey of a Man........2002-05-04

An interesting look at a person through the years - 9 years to be exact, in which the model morphs from a beautiful young man to an entirely different person - at least visually.

Although one of the thinner photo-essays, it should be in any shelf of serious collectors interested in the male physique.

2 out of 5 stars great concept, poor execution.......2001-09-08

I purchased the book because I was intrigued by its underlying concept to photograph a young man over a period of several years. However, the photographs were amateurish and were more like black and white "snapshots" than photographs. Since Brian was clearly posing, I had difficulty classifying the collection as more than a handful of pictures of an attractive model over a 9 year time span. Since these years were from the late teen to the late 20s, either Brian's physical maturation was too subtle or the photographic skill was inadequate to demonstrate transformation. The marking of time became superficial aspects: hairstyle and color, tattoos, and body piercing. Actually, the photographic style changed more than the model. In summary, the best part of the book was the creative idea of a photographic essay of a man over a period of time. Nine years may have been an inadequate time period, but I would predict that without the photogenic quality of youth, the pictures would quickly become even less interesting given the skill of the photographer.

    Book Description

The nude self-portrait is perhaps the most intimate form of photography. It delves deep into taboo territory and strips away the traditional barriers between artist and viewer. Witnessing such a private act, we may feel the queasy embarrassment of a voyeur, but we are always compelled to look further. The images cut to the core of issues of identity, sexuality, and ego–
and as they reveal an essential truth about their creators they also tell us something about ourselves.

Self-Exposure features more than 100 works from both established masters and up-and-coming photographers–many never before published. This groundbreaking collection traces the development of the male self-portrait from its earliest beginnings with such greats as Hippolyte Bayard, Herbert Tobias, and André Kertész, to the contemporary efforts of such artists as John Dugdale, Anthony Goicolea, and Yasumasa Morimura. Each artist takes a uniquely individual approach ranging from the shockingly perverse and aggressively erotic to the elusively self-conscious and sublimely beautiful. Complete with brief biographies of each artist, Self-Exposure is a powerful survey of this most seductive subject.

5 out of 5 stars Variety and depth.......2007-08-03

At least ninety artists work is shown in a beautifully printed and well presented book. Everything is done well, the forward and introduction, the references to artists web presence, the variety of the selections; personal, obscure, in-your-face, from subtle to campy obvious, many different personalities take the art of the nude in photography another step forward.
    Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars Massengill Pulls a Very Naked Rabbitt out of the Hat.......2007-01-04

There are many many "art" books depicting the male nude. VERY FEW of them have any art. Most of them are glamour shots of young buff men posed on a couch or by a pool or on the beach or wherever and the main thing you can say for them is that they are in focus. This book is about serious photographic artists turning their cameras on themselves and going for ART - not just pretty. There's plenty of pretty, but that's not the point, the point is that you can have pretty and art at the same time - and sometimes you have art and not pretty - and art is more important. If you'd like an art book of naked men to add to your pretty books of naked men, get this book. You will not regret it.

    4 out of 5 stars A Very Mixed Bag.......2006-04-01

The title says it all. Reed Massengill has put together a collection of male photographers doing nude-- for the most part-- self-portraits, a very creative idea for a book. In his "Introduction" to this volume he says: "The common thread that binds together these images is not simply that they are self-portraits by men; each of these artists shows us what is beautiful and different about their work and about themselves through these images." Certainly each photograph here is different; unfortunately, they are by no means all beautiful, although many of them are. In alphabetical order-- the way the photographers are presented-- Plate 4, John Arsenault; Plate 16, Armando Branco; all the pictures by John Dugdale; the two photographs by Mark Jenkins (beautifully lit and printed); Plate 91, Douglas Prince; and the two photographs by Brian To would meet the severest critic's requirements for beautiful. Then there are the erotic, the pornographic (by Jesse Helms' standards), the very creative, the cutesy, the dull and the just plain ugly. An inordinate number of photographers chose to present themselves as just body parts, reinforcing the cliche that if you have it, flaunt it. Several of the artists are into crossdressing and fetishes. And David Hockney forgot to remove his clothes.

The Pierre et Gilles and Jan Saudek self-portraits are as creative as we expect from these fine artists. A very young Robert Mapplethorpe, believe it or not, radiates innocence. Tom Bianchi's portraits are exactly what we would expect from him. There is obviously not a shy bone in his body. Both Arthur Tress and Duane Michals are to be commended for removing their clothes although they do not have beautiful bodies. There is an honesty and vulnerability in the Tress self-portrait that is very moving. Finally, Andy Warhol proves that anyone can take a bad photograph of himself.

Mr. Massengill also says in his introduction that he had to exclude a lot of "beautiful" work. Perhaps he will publish SELF-EXPOSURE TWO in the not too distant future.

5 out of 5 stars More than just the usual.......2006-03-15

This book delivers. Any individual interested in the above average, will find in this book a treasure of photos. The pictures are in most cases, experimenting with the self. In this book it is easy to share emotions with the photographers- as most of us have been there. Some pictures are raw, others subtle, but the quality never sucks! This is a book that you would like to share and most people just won't let it go!

1 out of 5 stars This is a very erratic book. A few GREAT images. Many not........2006-02-24

This book is extremely erratic in quality. It has some images that are truly fine art. But, buyer beware! Read that title and be warned that it IS "SELF-EXPOSURE". It has about five images that are truly artistic and fantastic photos, but the range goes downhill from there to include anything and everything an exhibitionist might want to show you and much more that you might involuntarily say: "Oh, YUCK!" at. Maybe it is just my taste but why would anyone want to view self-exposed pics of a saggy, older, overweight person sitting in a chair with his legs open? (and, this is a saggy older person speaking) Then, there is the couple with man holding gun in woman's mouth.
I had high hopes for this book and was greatly let down. I'm an artist who has always loved to draw and sculpt the human form (I hate painting clothing on it as the skin is so beautiful). It is just that this book has so few images that have any redeeming qualities that might inspire, satisfy, glorify the human body, or to educate someone. There are quite a few pictures that I would not want found in my home however and I found quite objectionable.
And, since bad publicity is good sales also, I have probably just sold a few more books for the author. More power to him. But, I do think you should be aware before you buy.

    Book Description

These images of ‘real’ men appeal on many levels — aesthetic, intellectual, sexual and emotional. Printed four-color throughout, the photographs are glorious and irresistibly eye-catching. Every style and subject is presented, from the black and white documentary style of Michael von Grattenreid to the beautifully lit, almost pornographic 70s-style photographs of Clifford Baker or the kitsch masterpieces of Gilbert and George; and from Michael McDevitt’s boxers and Tom Bianchi’s glamour boys to Trish Morrisey’s compelling old man.

5 out of 5 stars A Feast for the Soul.......2005-07-06

This book met my expectations...and then some. Looking through the book makes one feel that they are the recipient of a private showing from a museum. This book will be enjoyed by those with a discerning eye for art, as well as, for beauty.

4 out of 5 stars An Ambitious But Flawed Endeavor.......2004-02-05

There are some incredibly fine works included in this book by very important artists who have photographed the nude male: for example, Imogene Cunningham, David Hockney, Robert Mapplethorpe, Eadweard Muybridge, Jan Saudek, Arthur Tress, Horst P. Horst, Herbert List, George Hoyningen-Huene, Wilhelm Von Gloeden and Man Ray. (I suppose we should add Andy Warhol to the list although I believe his greatest talent was his indefatigable self-promotion.) There are also photos here by Harriet Leibowitz, Roy Blakey and Tom Bianchi. My three favorites are by Henning Von Berg from his series "Factory Boyz", the beautifully lit photograph of Robert Blanchon by George Mott, and Greg Friedler's "Untitled." But where is the fine work by Bruce Weber, Herb Ritts, Greg Gorman, George Dureau,Thomas Eakins, John Dugdale, Jock Sturgis and Helmut Newton? Yes, both Newton and Sturgis did photograph nude males occasionally; I have seen them. Since this book is called "a celebration of the male nude from 90 of the world's greatest photograhers," certainly the inclusion of any or all of these artists would have given more credibility to the editor's claim. Speaking of credibility, this collection would have more of that if both the editor and writer of the foreward had not been included in this collection. (Certainly the photographs of both Reed Massengill and Phil Braham are good ones-- I'd be happy to own either one of them. I just think this is more chutzpah than is necessary here.) Any collection of this sort that doesn't include a photograph by George Platt Lynes has lost its chance of coming close to being considered a definitive work. Finally, if "beefcake" photographers like Bruce of Los Angeles, Champion, Lon of New York and Bob Mizer are here, then why not include something by Kristen Bjorn? Nobody is better at beefcake than this gentleman.

The photographs of older men with less than perfect bodies add a nice dimension to this book as well as those that show a sense of humor on the part of the photographer. I refer here to "Shoe Ad 1" by Terry Richardson. The photographers are shown in alphabetical order. That seems as good a way to categorize them as any. The biographical sketches are informative. I'm not sure we need Mr. Braham's explanations of what we are seeing, however. There is truth in the old cliche that one picture is worth a thousand words.

2 out of 5 stars Most images are disgustiing trash........2002-10-06

Out of 90 images only 35 (5 are very good, other 30 so so)are acceptible for me. The remaining 55 are disgusting.
I respect those fetish. But I don't want to *see* them pissing on bed. Inside the book there even is a pic of an old man (the pic only took his head and breast) standing like a wood staring. It's meaningless and it' so annoying. I can only say that the editor want to prove he is tasteful and thoughtful by choosing so manny (*2/3*) disgusting/ugly photos here. However, it's not my taste and I hate those "thoughtful" critics--those parasites.

    5 out of 5 stars fantastic.......2001-11-10

Thank you Phil Braham. Quite possibly the best review of male nude photography/artists in years. Names like Man Ray, Wilhelm Von Gloeden, Andy Warhol, David Hockney, Robert Mapplethorpe and Drew Wojcik speek for it self. The best reference book of top photographers exploring the subject of male nude.

    4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly inspiring..........2001-10-28

the book is a compilation of images that will trigger your thought process to continue or conclude the story the photographer started. I'm afraid the story does not end after staring at the images. The images challenges you to visualize my own version of the photograph in our current space and time. Nicely executed and a variety of collectibles in one packed book...

    Book Description

The first book of images from Champion Studios, famous for quality color images of handsome, athletic young men from the late 1950s and early '60s. These 345 photographs of scantily clad athletes - packed with amusing props, costumes, and bulging posing pouches - are notable not only for the commercial success they enjoyed during their heyday, but also for their enduring creativity and imagination. Whether measured in terms of his prolific output, sales, his early and sophisticated use of customer mailing lists, or his impact upon the U.S. censorship laws of his time, Kundzicz and his work left an indelible imprint on male physique photography. Today, nearly half a century later, Kundzicz's work and his most popular models continue to have their ardent fans.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Good Eye Candy.......2007-08-09

This is a really good book. The only problem that I have with it is its size. It would have been perfect if it had been a little larger. But that said, I still highly recommend this book.

    5 out of 5 stars Exposed Innocence!!.......2006-01-21

If you are looking for a photographic collection of the slick, hard-core stud muffin of the late 20th and early 21st century, this isn't for you. Rather, this book is a paean to the youth, innocence, and cutting edge nature of 50's and 60's beefcake. The men are natural, not stylized to a more contemporary interpretation of male perfection. Gazing into some of the expressions on the models' faces, one can sense the adventure that they were undertaking, an adventure that would open the floodgates of modern male photographic expression. This is a seminal work, and a MUST HAVE for the collector of this type of artistic expression.

    1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2005-12-17

If you are interested in the history of male erotic photography, you should check this book out. If you would like to read a story about harrassment of the photographer and his repeatedly bad business dealings with people, buy this book. I found the poses silly or obviously taken in a cheap hotel room with no attempt to disguise the fact.

If you are interested in a guilt-free, visually stimulating book that celebrates the human body, you may wish to look elsewhere. I was deluded by the over-the-top reviews of others and really feel like I wasted my money.

    5 out of 5 stars Oddly Moving.......2004-08-22

It's not easy to say why these pictures are so affecting. Most of them show moderately good-looking young men in the late 1950s and early 1960s, during a crucial period just before the outbreak of the gay lib revolution. The models are photographed mostly standing or lying down, against ordinary backgrounds (one bathroom recurs very often), with simple props; most of them are nude or in skimpy posing straps. The physical type is also repetitive: muscular, but largely smooth and lithe (as it seems, "six-packs" hadn't been invented yet), well-groomed and, with only one exception, clean-shaven. Except in a few group photos, they are usually expressionless, rather than, say, overtly lascivious in the modern manner. The photos are a bit washed out, in the understated style of older pornography, but on the whole this book is leagues distant from modern porn.

What I kept thinking as I looked through it is that, for most of these men, a heroic age lay just on the horizon: Stonewall just a few years ahead, a time of profound sexual liberation. It's like they are pausing just before the battle begins.

This book is a fine document of a distant era, and well worth owning.

    4 out of 5 stars Bravo Wally!.......2004-05-16

Wally Kundzicz took the bull by the horns & put together a tribute to himself using scans of small prints he had, Bravo! Despite his sometimes faulty memory, the nearly 80 year old photographer recalls his by-gone days of glory and documents his important place in the history of physique photography. His triumphs in court helped to end postal tyranny and did much to pave the way for today's Gay press. The book may be small, but the quality of the printing is outstanding. The size of the book is evocative of the Golden Age of physique photography, when prints and magazines were small format only, so that they would fit easily into a man's jacket pocket. Those were the days when we all lived in a backward, homophobic society in which the revelation that a man was Gay almost always resulted in the loss of his job and his home and his ostracization by his family and by "main stream" society.... or worse. The appropriately small size of the book recalls those anxious and repressive times, and is a good size to pop into a briefcase.
... Some words of warning, however: Wally's memory failed him from time to time, and he got some of the model's names wrong. (Who can blame him? All of those hunks would blow anybody's mind.) The official site has the correct names.

5 out of 5 stars NOTES FOR THE COLLECTOR OF MALE EROTICA.......2000-04-19

Beautiful photobook by Reed Massengill. Black and white photos lovingly created by a great artist. Massengill writes in his notes for the book that he is not a "professional" photographer, and that may be why this photobook is so refreshingly original and magnificent. Massengill concentrates on displaying the beauty of the male form, every line and curve, with attention to detail and devoted respect for his models. This is a small book, can easily fit in your back pocket, but a "must have" for the collector simply because these photos are so good. Highly recommended for the collector.

I knew Reed Massengill when he lived in Atlanta, and I saw much of this book in progress. I envied Reed--the way beauty seemed to gravitate toward him (male and female). Beyond my envy, I appreciated the way Reed was able to capture on film the gentle beauty of his subjects. These are honest, clear portraits without pretense: sexy, strong, youthful--but nonetheless unassuming and approachable. Reed's talent for photography is as natural as the men he photographs

4 out of 5 stars Great Art, Story could have been more polished........2006-12-08

I agree with the other reviewers that the story was a bit convoluted. There was a big set up but the resolution was too quick and unsatisfying. I do give the story credit though for it's epic ambition. I hate how modern comic books are so decompressed that it usually takes you little time to read them. This, however, was definitely ambitious in the old fashion way - it really does read like a novel. It took me four nights to read it, which is significant, since most graphic novels nowadays I can read in just one short night. The other fault that I have with it is that the book is printed on cheap paper and it has a crappy binding, but I guess the trade off is that it's a cheap book. You definitely get your money's worth in story and pages. Speaking of which - the art is absolutely gorgeous. Some of the best Batman art that I've seen in a long time. The book is not perfect, but as what it is at the price, I definitely recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars City of Crime: Great artwork, dramatic story.......2006-11-19

City of Crime is a stunning masterpiece worthy of any comic collector's shelf. Though the story is somewhat challenging to follow, City of Crime is dramatic, poetic, and suspenseful in its own Batman kind of way. The story retains that dark, Gotham feel, and keeps the theme that the city holds many secrets. And so, a lot of the mysteries in City of Crime are never revealed...

    Worth the buy.

    2 out of 5 stars Not recommended.......2006-11-09

When a spoiled young rich girl turns up dead from an overdose, it touches Bruce Wayne in ways that few can understand. And when a mother pleas for the return of her missing daughter, Batman takes on the girls cause as his way to help the young girl who is already dead. But, there's more going on than meets the eye, and even Batman's old enemies are running scared. Just what is going on in Gotham City?

OK, where do I start with this one? Overall, I found the artwork to be very good. The fly in the ointment is the story, which is terribly convoluted. And the worst of it is that Batman is up against a new and terrifying opponent, but for the life of me, I can't figure out who it was or what they wanted.

So, I must agree that this is not a very good Batman graphic novel. It *could* have been, and more's the pity. I do not recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars Great batman story.......2006-10-18

Finding a young girl's killer. Saving people from a massive fire. Stopping Mr. Freeze from marrying an unwilling Nora look-a-like. Taking down a dangerous man who abuses his wife. All while uncovering a plot that could potentially kill everyone in Gotham. Good stuff

1 out of 5 stars I had to say this..........2006-09-03

Being a looooong time Batman fan City of Crime ranks as one of the worst stories I have ever read in a Bat-title. Do not waste your time on this one. It was a 12 issue series that disappoints.

    Book Description

Long before Bruce Weber or Herb Ritts picked up a camera, there was a photographer whose images glorified the male nude. But Alonzo Hanagan, better known as Lon of New York, was working during the 1940s and 1950s, when images of the male nude were not just illicit but illegal. Twice, his studio was raided and his negatives destroyed by police. Many of the images in this book thus exist only as prints purchased by collectors at the time.

Now, for the first time in more than forty years, these photos are published in one comprehensive collection that recovers this lost body of work. Suffused with a coy playfulness and a naïve vulnerability, these erotic images of men evoke a time of greater innocence but also of greater suppression, revealing much about gay history and the history of photography.

4 out of 5 stars The Male Ideal: .......2007-07-27

This is a great "underground" era of photography that needs more documentation & archiving. There is so much more to know and see of this age when things like this were forbiden - yet so popular.

5 out of 5 stars In the Beginning: The Contributions of the Pioneer in Male Photography.......2006-10-31

Lon of New York (AKA Alonzo James Hanagan) is honored is this very beautifully designed and written book by Reed Massengill. Beginning with a fine foreword by Vince Aletti which summarizes Lon's position of importance in the field of photographing the male physique in a time when such photography was literally burned as pornography, Reed Massengill then takes us on a verbal and visual survey of the rather remarkable gifts of this important artist.

The pleasure of the book is not just the subject matter (though that is entertaining in and of itself) but rather in the chance to observe how male posing and male ideals have developed since the last century. Very often the body builders Lon of New York used as models are in the poses usually reserved for competitions. It is his taking those poses and pushing them a step toward art that makes them unique.

But credit Reed Massengill, one of our finest photographers of the male nude today, to mix the images so that there is little redundancy of stance: beefcake gives way to innocence and pride in the raw and the spectrum is admirable. This is not only a fine book to read and peruse, but it is also an important documentation for the world of art photography and especially for those many fine artists who are now making the images of the male nude a true art form. Recommended. Grady Harp, October 06

2 out of 5 stars Beautiful then but not now!.......2006-10-25

Beauty seems to change. I have no doubt that the models were considered beautiful at the time the pictures were taken.

However, this is not the case when the pictures are viewed today.

You should not buy this book if you want to look at slim and beautiful males naked.

    5 out of 5 stars LUSCIOUS !!.......2005-08-09

This book will have your drooling. So incredible, it is almost edible...would that they were.

5 out of 5 stars How Great Words Beautify Great Art.......2004-08-12

I was only expecting the photos to be revealing. But this book is so well written that the shots expose even deeper beauty. Photographic history can be so dry, but in this author's hands you are engaged. No longer are the photos just nude shots, but a dangerous moment captured between a man behind a camera and another very real person in front. Illegal in their day, the prints were an act of daring as well as art - but the extent of the daring and danger are only truly felt after reading the great text. This book is a joy!
