Things to do before your die.......2007-05-12
Great ideas. I gave it as a gift but skimmed it prior to wrapping it. Good stuff
Too Silly.......2006-09-01
I didn't know this book would list the dumb things to do before you die. I'll pass on the bog swimming, testicle festivals and penis parades for the real eventss I don't want to miss like the Balloon Fiesta.
100 things to AVOID before you die, like this book.......2005-01-01
This book is the worst. The suggestions of things to do are just plain aweful. It seems to suggest every crowded fair and typical tourist attraction in any city. This would be great if you love crowds and mayhem. The suggestions are useless. New Years Eve in Times square? Mardi Gras? Acadamy Awards? Carnaval? Who's not aware of these events? It could have some redeaming qualities if it had suggestions about where to stay and how to plan these types of trips, but it does not offer any other information than the dates and location. Nobel Prize Ceremonies? Running of the Bulls? Come on!!!! What a waste of paper, money and time.
Not For the Faint of Heart..........2004-04-27
"100 Things to do Before You Die: Travel Events You Just Can't Miss" by Dave Freeman and Neil Teplica is a travel book for those who like adventure, "living on the edge," and somewhat of an avante garde approach to life. It is NOT for the "faint of heart" or most senior citizens (although it depends on the seniors).
100 Things provides information on such festivals and events as: Academy Awards Ceremony (which is REALLY difficult to get into); World Campionship Punkin' Chunkin' , North American Rainbow Gathering, Mardi Gras, Custer's Last Stand Reenactment, Testicle Festival, Roswell UFO Encounter, etc. As you can tell these events CAN be pretty bizarre (but never dull).
The book's events are divided by both country and, in the back, by month, which is helpful.
Unfortunately, the book only lists their own "whatsgoingon.com" website as internet info on the events. This would have been great, but it hasn't been in service lately. This glitch may be temporary, or the website may no longer cease to exist - but I would make sure that the website was up and running before I purchased the book.
Good title, but what about content...........2004-03-02
According to my opinion absolutely useless book - seems that authors just "copy -paste" infomation from different sources. Also I disgaree with other reviewers that book is giving some practical information concerning participation in certian events. Having seen some of the events (places) what authors are describing I consider that information sometimes is misleading. Not to mention format and layout of the book - you really do not want to hold in hands such book, especially about travelling.
Book Description
Do or Die is the first insider account of teenage gangs--the lives, loves, and battles of children who kill--from the only journalist ever allowed inside this closed and dangerous world.
This is no West Side Story. Welcome to a world where teenagers wear colostomy bags and have scrapbooks filled with funeral invitations; where a young man, after being shot in the chest, drives himself to the hospital; where another youngster, caught in crossfire, uses his girlfriend as a human shield; where teenage gangsters are kidnapped, tortured, and held for six-figure ransoms; where kids hum the latest movie's theme music while killing people. It's a world of clickheads, sherms, bangers, ballers, and mummyheads; a world where the strongest feelings of family come from other gang members; a world where the most potent feelings of self-worth come from murder.

Below Average .......2006-10-19
Plain and simple, this book is terrible. The fact that the author went through the hood of L.A did not make up for how poorly this book was written. I can tell off the bat that this book was written by a white author who knows nothing about gangs. Advice: do alot of research first then the interviews. (She lucky it wasnt after the Rodney King incident when she stroll through the hood). Would you buy a documentry book about the stock market written by a gang banger?
Interesting characters, caring, non-judgemental narrator.......2006-07-01
The characters that were the voices in this book were very interesting and had great stories. There was everything to wannabes, baby homies, OGs and those on their way up to OG status, ex-homegirls that were blinded by being shot in the neck, a young teenage lil' homie who drove himself to the hospital after being shot in the stomache, and the families that lived with 'em. I really liked hearing their dialogue, a brief history of how gangs may have came about, and a listing of the different sets over the different streets. The narrator was a strange element to the story because she was just a white older lady that obviously had never done anything remotely gangster in her life. However, she was non judgemental, caring, and sincere, so I couldn't be too upset about that. All in all, great book.
Point of reference.......2006-01-13
Inspite of all the hype and controversy centering mainly on Leon Bings race and sex, this book is an valuable resource for gang research if for no other reason than it was the vehicle which led to the Monster Kody autobiography. There are many holes in the structure of the book in relation to use of slang but that is understandable considering the author was obviously out of her element with this project. Once again I would suggest reading this title for the early account of Monster Kody who was just emerging from one of his many jail stints. The interview with Kody is far and away the highlight of the book even if the cover photo is a pathetic attempt to portray the danger of a murderous gang member as sexy.
Interesting.......2005-09-02
Pretty good book. I enjoyed reading. Author could have done a better job translating text. Ex. "What's up my Nigga" vs What's up my Nigger"
Weak.......2005-06-05
I read Monsta Kody's autobiography first and it was good, then I read this cause Monsta is on the cover. It's hella weak. The author is a white lady, now there is nothing wrong with this until you start reading and you see the "N" word used incorrectly over and over. Anybody that has any sense know that street cats use that word 100 times a day but it is pronounced Nigah. She doesnt get it tho, it is spelled out the way a racist would say it with the "ER" on the end of the word. I aint saying that she is racist but to me it's a sign that she wrote a book about something that she didn't understand...so how can the book be all that good. She isn't naming sets, she is calling Ese's "Essays", the stories are not that interesting...maybe if I woulda read this before I read Monsta's book it woulda been readable. If you are interested in this subject and you have have limited funds buy Monsta Kody's book instead.

What on Earth.......2007-10-03
Was a good resource for 8-11 yr old kids upon the death of a loved one.
Very good reading for children! .......2005-10-10
My 9 year-old son recently lost his father and he was not talking to me or any family members about his feelings. This book was very thorough for a young person and it helped him to open dialogue with me and start his grieving process. I highly recommend this book.
Helpful for Basic Questions of A Child Experiencing A Death.......2004-07-31
This book provides brief and blunt answers to questions many children may have and adults may not consider - it touches on 'What is a Memorial Service', 'Where does the person go', 'Am I Going To Die Too?', 'Is the Death My Fault' as well as common feelings experienced while grieving. Each topic is brief and written for a child.
As an Adult: At first, this was the only book I could read myself, as most of the other books were too overwhelming.
Childish illustration paired with Blunt realism........2003-10-03
I bought this for my 4 1/2 year old, she has never seen it. I found it too clinical, and not at all what I had imagined having read the other reviews. The cartoons seemed aimed at my daughters age group, yet the writing is in my opinion, not for little ones. I showed this book to my twelve year old niece, thinking maybe the target was more in her age range. Her response was an incredulous "isnt this supposed to make you feel better!?"...
Honestly Helpful.......2000-07-05
I searched through all the books on the amazon website related to helping children face death of a loved one. I read all the reviews, ordered all the books that sounded good. I then read all the books that sounded good and this is my top pick. I gave it to a five year old whose grandmother had died. His father told me that it helped him just as much as his son. I am writing this review, sadly, because I am ordering it again for a teen-age boy whose little brother drowned recently. This book will not turn kids off, it is not corny or sentimental. As a family therapist, I only use the best books available and hope that this recommendation helps someone else.

Customer Reviews:
Travel to Distant Lands for the Thrill of It........2005-11-11
This is a travel book in the form of coffeetable binding and photographs. It is the second in a series, a continuation of UNFORGETTABLE PLACES TO SEE BEFORE YOU DIE by Steve Davey. Published by a British firm, the U.S.A. is of nominal interest to their project.
In the first book, the Grand Canyon in Arizona represented America; in this one, it is Las Vegas and New Orleans (prior to Katrina's destruction), and driving down Route 1 on the California coast. There is the Wall of China, volcano in Guatemala, the rainforest in Belize, hiking the Himalayas and riding elephants in Nepal, and discovering a medieval city in Estonia.
For those of us who don't have the resources to travel to these far away places, we can do it vicariously by looking at these beautiful pictures. None of it is even one thing I will do before I die.
Forget the esoteric pretentiousness this is a good book!.......2005-09-25
Rather than waffle on with some self-indulgent, up myself faux esoteric claptrap to try to make myself look and feel important, I will address the book in question. Its good, very good. There are some teriffic photos here and the authors have managed to convey the atmosphere of many of the places.
Death and memory.......2005-06-02
As the first person to review this book, I feel the responsibility weighing heavily upon me to address the fatal paradox lying at its core - and I don't mean fatal metaphorically. The book covers a lot of ground in its suggestions for things to do (and places to go) before you die, and on the whole these things do generally indeed fulfil an undeniably high level of unforgettableness. Surely, however, in the given circumstances, unforgettableness is largely an irrelevant concept? With death just around the corner, quite unmemorable, quickly forgotten activities serve just as well to fill in the time. If proximity to death offers anything positive at all, it's the fact that you no longer have to remember anything for very long...

101 things to do before you die.......2007-07-30
The Book is very interesting and fun with lots of different areas to write your stories in and stickers to show completed tasks. Over all, it is a very fun little book.
101 things to do before you die.......2007-05-07
This is a fun coffee table book - only! I like to travel and have lived in many different countries, so I liked the allure of doing more interesting things. But, this book is just for fun reading. God forbid you do most of things in here! Some are genuinely interesting things to do while others are simply stunts which would make your drunken (and retarded) mates proud. Overall, fun book I don't regret buying. But sure what your buying - a fun read. That's it.
Not bad, but not for me.......2007-03-09
The list is okay. A few things are like, "What? Why would I care about doing that?" Definitely gets you thinking about your own list. If you're a GUY I highly recommend DIE HAPPY 499 THINGS EVERY GUYS GOTTA DO WHILE HE STILL CAN. Similar thought, but very funny, full of great ideas with substance (adventures, fests, sports, travels, partying, lost weekends), 499 in all. It has some crazy true stories, too.
don't waist your money..........2007-03-01
This book is ok at best... some of the things it suggests are kinda dumb and not very realistic. Also, it doesn't really give you much advice on HOW to go about doing some of these things...
101 things to do before you die is amazing.......2007-01-10
i loved this book.... i got it for a gift and ended up just keeping it for myself... it is something i will enjoy to fill out and strive to complete

Every guy must own this book!!.......2006-06-14
I bought this book and it really is a "must-own" for all single guys. It's full of great ideas, from travel to sports to parties. But the best parts are the personal stories of real guys who have done hilarious things on the list. I want to meet those guys...buy it now and start checking off your own list.
Has Oprah put it on her list yet?.......2006-06-13
Very funny book. Full of great ideas and ways to live life to its fullest. My favorite quote so far is from the Running of the Bulls: "Don't be afraid to tell (the ladies) how you are the #1 bull fighter in the state of Rhode Island." Great stuff... should be given to every guy on his 18th birthday.
My Official NEW Bathroom Book.......2006-06-02
And that's a high honor. Picked it up the other day. Full of great Ideas. From places to travel to festivals to my favorite (and I am going to organize this) the Big Wheel Pub Crawl. Awesome stuff. Definitely gave me some things to try and accomplish... like 499 of them.
Definitely a guy's book . . . .......2006-05-29
My boyfriend bought this book so I decided to check it out to see what kinds of things he "had to do" before it was too late. While this is definitely not written to appeal to me (the girlfriend) I found some of it quite funny. I could also see why it would appeal to my boyfriend and his friends. While I certainly hope he doesn't try everything outlined in the book (if he still wants to be my boyfriend) I think he would have a great time doing a lot of the stuff mentioned in it. I don't think I would ever buy this book for him but I would think about getting it for some of my single guy friends.
Even If you think you've done it all..........2006-05-20
This book is a phenomenal collection of stories that every guy (who considers himself so) can enjoy. Between the "I think I did that" and "Why havent I thought of that" comments, you'll find a down to earth manual that will keep you laughing as you reminisce over good times. My favorite part was the idea about crashing a wedding you've actually been invited to and becoming "that guy" ~ can't wait to try that one out! ;)
Customer Reviews:
SPIRITUAL AND STREET!!!!.......2007-08-25
I AM AT A LOSS FOR WORDZ ABOUT THIS BOOK.I HAVE JUST FINISHED READING IT THE SECOND TIME IN TWO YEARS AND IT IS BY FAR ONE OF THE MOST MOVING PEICES OF STREET LIT I HAVE EVER READ.THE BOYS TAKE YOU ON TWO SEPERATE JOURNEYS THROUGH THE SAME EVENTS AND STILL END UP WHERE GOD NEEDS THEM TO BE. JUST READ IT.
PS FOR ADULTS ONLY, THE INTIMATE AREAS ARE OFF DA HOOK!
Male version of The Coldest Winter Ever.......2006-12-22
Judging by the cover I thought this book wouldn't hold my attention. But I went ahead and bought based on the reviews I read on Amazon. I thought this book was excellent. Very exciting. I felt like I could visualize each character. Nothing was predictable. I wish the author would have expanded more on the characters' love life - I needed more romance! But by far it was a great read.
just exceptional.......2006-11-04
I absolutely loved this book! it was a page turner for sure..it took 2 days to read it. I just couldn't put the book down..But i didn't understand why they did in fact stay in New York. I thought the plan was to get out of town quick once everything was finally said and done..but i can't wait to read the second part to see why..once again..I LOVED IT!!!
Unparallel to anything out there. Simply mind-blowing!.......2006-10-24
This book is an exceptional piece of work. The author did his thing with graphic detail, heart-racing suspense, immoral plots, unexpected twists, and a chain of hard-core events that leave the reader breathless. This man is a brilliant writer. The story takes you on a bumpy ride with no seatbelt. The murder and mayhem contained in this novel is eerie. There's no doubt that the truth is being spoken on these pages about what goes down in these streets daily. I was puzzled as to why Malik and Abraham chose to stay in New York after all they'd been through and overcome. There was a serious chance that someone's death would be avenged. They could have started their lives over somewhere else but I'm sure this is somehow linked to the Do or Die sequel. I look forward to it.
Quite Simply A Must Read.......2006-01-11
I, like the other readers don't read much, but this book.... WOW, is the only thing i can say about it.... Like everyone has said it holds you from start to finish... Quite Simply A MUST READ!

The cover of Ten Fun Things to Do Before You Die says that its author is "nun other than" Karol Jackowski, which gives you a hint of the humor and humility that suffuses this sister's faith. (The cover's funky design, in the style of those old Monty Python animated interludes, is a tip-off too.) "Nothing exhilarates and sends the soul soaring more than having the best time ever--so much so that face muscles ache from such hearty laughter," she writes. "May you have millions of such laughs. Time rarely gets more divine than that." Each of the titular 10 things--from "Write Something at the End of Every Day" to "Think about Nuns" to "Live Like You Have Nothing Left to Lose"--is described in a short chapter, illustrated with very funny line drawings. Even people who can't stand self-help books may enjoy this one, because its voice is so delightfully free of sententiousness and so disarmingly candid. Ten Fun Things to Do Before You Die is a book that will challenge and comfort the reader, and serve as a reminder that we were created to enjoy the world--a message that will give many readers permission to do just that. --Michael Joseph Gross
Book Description
In a delightfully witty yet reflective manner, Jackowski offers invaluable advice about overcoming serious challenges and striving toward everlasting self-worth. Her encouragement and optimism shines through, and her helpful words are accompanied by whimsical illustrations as well as asides and sidebars. The perfect antidote to the pressures and complexities of everyday life, this deceptively simple guide to a more fulfilling existence is filled with wry humour, humanity, and the power of faith.
Customer Reviews:
More pagan claptrap.......2004-01-30
Someone's dreams are coming true when you read this, and it won't be yours. It'll be the woman who wrote this silly pagan mess in the first place. This book is not aimed at Catholics or serious protestant Christians - it is aimed at the bland, cynical post modern reader (in this case female, with a disordered fascination for witchcraft) who quickly snaps up Oprah's next book club selection. That a nun would write this is painful. That it would be proudly published is shameful.
LET ME HEAR A HEAVENLY AMEN!.......2003-01-01
A gift from heaven? The hell with it! a real-life nun named Karol Jackowski somehow convinced Hyperion that she had a book inside her, and Holy Hypocrite! it worked. This paperback is filled with such earth-shattering advice such as "if it looks like fun and doesn't break The 10 Commandments, do it" and "write something at the end of every day." OK, Sis. I am taking your advice. My words at the end of this day: Thou Shall Not Read such a miraculous waste of ink and paper. Amen!
One of my all time favorites.......2002-05-14
This is the kind of book that I want to buy 20 copies of and give to all my friends. Maybe some day I will. I read it over and over again. It's a great book. I love all of Sister's books.
A little book packed with lots of wisdom.......2000-11-30
Sister Karol's book is one of my all time favourites and something I can return to time and time again for inspiration. It isn't a heavy, dry read in the least, something one might perhaps expect of a Catholic nun. She is fun, witty and occasionally somewhat irreverent (in the best possible way). Infact, I think I'd like to invite her to my next party...:)
Nuns have more fun.......2000-11-25
This book is more like a "rule of life" than suggestions for specific fun things to do, like going skydiving or riding the world's biggest roller coaster. Of course, calling it a "rule of life" wouldn't be much fun, now, would it? Among all the frivolity (not that there's anything wrong with frivolity) she slips in a few ideas that could be construed as spiritual disciplines. Very clever, this nun! She might be a fun person to take to the clubs and discos, but only after her periods of silent meditation.
I really wanted to give this book at least three stars, but I had to dock it one star due to her constant references to "the Gods" or "the Gods and their Muses". Just to whom the heck is she referring? Fun is fun, but I would expect a nun to at least be a monotheist.

Killer.......2006-05-14
This book was so awesome. I have trouble finding books that I actually enjoy reading. This one, is an exeption. It is just so different from all the other books that I have encountered. The way that it is written is just so enjoyable to read. I read this book in 3 days. Not because it was easy...no...no...because I couldn't put the book down! I was even up in the middle of the night JUST to finish it! This is an totally killer book, i highly reccommend it for teens, especially those who don't find reading "fun", because this book'll change your mind!!!

"Fun and thought-provoking".......2005-04-14
I absolutely love this book. It's funny in a sad sense, and sad in a funny sense...
I want to live my life to the fullest like Ted Burger.
Not what I thought!.......2005-04-14
From the title you assume the character is going to die. Ted Burger is somewhat your typical teenager. He plays the guitar likes the group "shakes the clown, and is a bit of a clown himself. On average day he hangs out with his best friend Mark and Mark's girlfriend Nikki. After school they usually hang out at the Circle Eat diner. One day it so happen the cook who worked there and was eventually fired came back and told them he poison the fries and whoever eats them will die of a fast death. Since Ted usually order fries and was starting to feel sick he begins to belive the cook and so he starts telling you how it feels to be dying and knowing you have lest than 24 hours. It took me reading practically midway to realise perhaps he is not going to die.Ted eventually begins having a list that his friend Mark put together of things Ted should do before he dies. In conclusion as said before I started reading it thinking it was going to be sad because of the character death only to find out its a tongue in cheek book about death. In the end I did not really enjoy this book.I felt the author was making a joke about death which I do not see as funny.
Book Description
ER nurse Darcy Cavanaugh is sailing the high seas again-adrift as a bridesmaid on a wedding cruise complete with raucous firefighters who have a taste for practical jokes and raunchy ties. Cruising up the West Coast, Darcy tries not to panic about one curious ring-sized box hidden in her boyfriend's pocket. But a poet-stalker obsessed with her feet, a stressed-out wedding planner, and her hunky ex-boyfriend are keeping Darcy on alert for more than the free mimosas!
When the prankster firefighters start dropping like flies, "I do" becomes "I didn't" as the entire wedding party is held onboard and questioned one by one. Between bouts of killer staples, interrogations by the FBI, and one mortifying polka-dot bridesmaid dress, Darcy wonders if she'll ever be ready for the tumultuous tides of marriage.
Customer Reviews:
Funny mystery with romance twist.......2007-06-26
Aye Do or Die is a funny mystery with a romance twist a la Janet Evanovich (two guys competing for our heroine's affection) and lots of clever little details. It was a very enjoyable read.

High Seas Mayhem.......2007-06-18
I enjoyed the second installment in this series just as much as the first. As someone who loves to cruise, I really like the ship settings. I was a little disappointed this time in that the mystery was pretty obvious no more than half way through the book. All in all though this is a fun series and is quick and easy to read. A perfect "beach" book.
Strong Second Entry.......2007-04-17
In Aye Do or Die we join Darcy and her friend Marie on a second cruise adventure, this time cruising for a friends wedding instead as work. I liked a lot of aspects of the book, Ms. Calvert's writing is often hilarious and the characters are strong and engaging. It was a quick read and kept me anxious to turn the pages. Another strength is that Darcy's involvement is plausible, investigating mishaps to help ensure that her friends wedding will occur. She never seeks to go around or above the authorities, kudos to the author.
I was a little disappointed in the mystery angle. The mystery was well built, but I felt that the killer's identity was clear very early on. By the end I was a bit frustrated that the characters hadn't caught on yet. Overall, I recommend the series as it is very fun without being fluff. I look forward the third entry in the series.
You did it again.......2007-03-20
Another great book. Darcy is such a great, mixed up character. She is so smart and ditzy at the same time. I love her relationship with her FBI guy, Luke and her gay best friend, Marie. Keep up the good work Candy. I'm looking forward to #3.
Smooth Sailing With Darcy and Company.......2007-03-16
I enjoyed Aye Do or Die even more than Dressed to Keel, and that is saying a lot. Candy Calvert entertained me throughout the wildest wedding party mystery cruise I've ever set sail on. Her snappy dialogue had me laughing out loud, and she kept me guessing who-done-it until the last few pages. Ms. Calvert weaved a lovely romance throughout the story with not one but two dashing suitors for our slightly hyper, but always dressed to the nines, heroine. And I'll never think about staples and staplers in the same way again!
So, where are we cruising next?
