Book Description
Make any renovation job go smoother. Building renovation, conservation and reuse represents more than half of all construction work - and is projected to increase to 80% by 2004. Structural Renovation of Buildings, by Alexander Newman, puts a single, convenient source of information about all aspects of structural renovation and strengthening of buildings at your fingertips. While its focus is largely on low and midrise buildings, you can apply the principles it clarifies to buildings of any size - steel-framed, masonry, or wood. Whether you're repairing deteriorated concrete...rehabilitating slabs on grade...strengthening lateral-load resisting systems...renovating a building facade...handling seismic upgrades or fire damage, you'll find this time-and-trouble-saving guide loaded with practical tips, methods, and design examples. It's also heavily illustrated with autoCAD generated details, supplier illustrations of materials, procedural techniques, and much, much more.

A Pragmatic Building Restoration Guide -- at Last!.......2007-09-11
While this text explores renovation of a wide variety of building systems -- reinforced and post-tensioned concrete, wood, steel, masonry -- from a structural engineering perspective, it is quite pragmatically written and a non-engineer will derive considerable benefit from it. The book provides an excellent and detailed guide to critical issues that are confronted in period restoration, including making transparent best practices for undertaking the investigative process to evaluate salvagable components and structures for each type of building system. Filled with well-researched historical data about material types, it also contains excellent reference sections at the end of each chapter. An outstanding resource for those who are serious about building restoration.
Lots of good ideas for refurbishment.......2007-05-13
A comprehensive book but with some strange omissions: very little on foundations or restrained brickwork. Also, the section on FRPs looks like it came straight out of a contractor's brochure. But these don't really detract that much. Strongly recommended.
Structural Renovation Essential.......2006-11-10
Renovations types are defined, methods of investigation, solutions proposed, case studies and additional reading are presented for further assistance. Structural revonations are common works this book is a 'must buy' when conducting these works.
A staple handbook for renovation.......2002-12-21
In my office where projects are small commercial or residential, I find Mr. Newman's book a basic resource for renovation work. This comprehensive handbook provides either a solution or more considerations that were not obvious at first. It is a main staple I turn to for guidance on renovations of all structure types and materials.
A good handbook for a difficult subject.......2002-05-26
This book is well organized and presented. It covers a lot, and is more comprehensive than other books of its type. It has very good material on concrete design/repair, and also covers wood structures, steel, and pre-engineered buildings quite well. The material on masonry is also good, but a discussion about rusted steel lintels embedded in masonry would have helpful, as this is a common source of problems in 20th century buildings. There are few handbooks that come as close as this one to a thorough treatment of the subject, and it is a useful book for architects and engineers who deal with renovation.

Book Description
Unique in the literature and sure to become a standard reference, here is the first guide to the identification and restoration of building facades. Featuring 2,000 b/w halftones illustrations, it chronicles in photo-essay style the diversity of facades from around the world. Images are shown within their historical and social context, and are easily accessed through cross-references to chronology, geography, location, building type, type of detail, and materials used. Select case studies (Ellis Island Museum and others) emphasize the practical aspects of preservation.
Book Description
The external facades of a building are more than a protective mantle, or an intelligent skin regulating temperature and light, they also determine its very appearance. By unusual choices of materials and the use of complex technology, facades have become increasingly significant in recent years. External surfaces are being perceived as an integral part of the building and are therefore being designed as such. This volume focuses on the wide-ranging aspects of facade design, from the selection and use of materials to the advanced technical possibilities now open to the architect. A wide array of carefully selected international examples show the theory in the practice. All plans, details, and large scale sections of the facades have been researched with the high degree of competence typical of the editorial staff from the review Detail. Expert authors provide the essential information needed to plan and design facades and elucidate on the latest developments in technology and materials

In Detail Series sets a new standard for contemporary architecture.......2007-08-04
I cannot say enough about the quality of this entire series, and this book is among the best of the set. Few architecture books are of this high quality; one usually expects some level of editorial compromise; either we get lightweight analysis and documentation with beautiful photographs, or you get overly complex, teched out stuff that doesn't understand the fundamental concepts. Or it's just bad architecture. But this entire series, from the quality of the writing, the great beauty and clarity of the drawings, and finally to the aptness and excellence of the finished architecture; it represents the new state of the art. Buy the whole series, but start with this one and "Building Simply", which I'll rave about separately.
Amazing reference and read.......2007-07-27
A must have for all architects and those interested in how buildings come together and the importance the skin plays. As specially when trying new materials.
Spectacular buildings with unique sidings.......2007-03-11
There was a time when there was no question as to what the outside skin of a building was going to be, glass alternating with metal panels. Something monolithic looking like the UN building.
Now significant advances in materials, architectural design, creative use of conventional materials like shingles, concrete, or sprayed on foam are producing building where the skin becomes more than just what you see.
The book is organized into two main sections. The first third or so is used to describe the general changes that have been taking place in the general area of building skins.
The last two thirds show where various treatments have been used in actual buildings. The buildings vary from tiny, micro houses to athletic stadiums, stores to factories.
This is European publication. Most of the buildings are in Europe, with a few from Japan. They represent the most significant advances in design I have seen in a long time.
Great Book.......2007-02-22
Great examples of innovative building skins with good details.
Highly recommended for architects and architecture lovers.
very comprehensive usage of modern materials........2006-07-10
The book describes simple and neat building enclosure design in detail and palette. The book should be applicable to architects or designers who aspire to work in minimalism or modernism and who desire to improve the building enclosure design to be more insighfully creative and blight. Through the publication good samples are reviewed to support reader's imagination and to confirm the practicality of use.
Book Description
Comprehensive, in-depth coverage from leading experts in the field
A historic building is a fragile resource that requires the finest care. Maintenance and rehabilitation of walls and facades call for a thorough understanding of the forces that cause deterioration, knowledge of the properties of building materials, up-to-date inspection tools and methods, and a solid command of renovation and repair techniques. In this complete reference manual, recognized experts provide state-of-the-art information and methodologies for the inspection, maintenance, and restoration of historic buildings of virtually every period, style, and material.
Each chapter opens with a general discussion of the facade material and the ways in which structural and decorative elements are vulnerable to an array of environmental forces. After a detailed investigation of tools and techniques for inspection, the text explores planning issues for the restoration or replacement of facade components. Special features include:
- Separate chapters on each major type of building materialâstone masonry, brick masonry, terra-cotta masonry, cast stone, mortar, concrete, cast iron, sheet metal, and wood
- An entire chapter on caulks and sealants
- 35 original line drawings and 43 black and white photos that help visualize technical information
- Selected success stories from preservation projects across the United States
For architects, building contractors, and owners of historic buildings, Historic Building Facades clarifies procedures, helps identify sources of deterioration, and offers solutions to even the most difficult maintenance and rehabilitation problems. It is also an excellent reference for building preservationists, architectural historians, and students of building design and preservation.

Customer Reviews:
Great Reference for "designer's block"........2006-01-14
I bought this book while still a student in architecure school. After many, many years of professional practice I still regularly pull this book off my shelf when I need a jolt out of "designer's block".
This book is a reference tool and nothing else. It contains many reference sketches from a variety of architectural elements including but not limited to plan form layouts, facade massing elements, door and window surround details.
It is not highly detailed in terms of each and every line and form. It is however highly useful for forms and massing. Just what the designer sometimes needs to generate an idea when design ideas don't seem to be forthcoming easily. I have actually used sketches for say a gate and then adapted an idea developed from it to formulate an entry detail unrelated to a gate. Often the finished idea does not look like the sketch found in this book from which it originated...but then that is the idea of a designer...sometimes all we need is as concept or spark of an idea to let our imiginations develop it into the final product.
Of all the architectual books I own (and there are many) this one has been used by me the most.
Incredible detail for artists and illustrators.......2004-11-29
As an artist, long have I looked for books helping to graphically show in simple detail elements of architecture. Perfect for medieval to pre-industrial societies, designing literally everything structural. A must resource for village and city design, if only there were more like this. Less text, tons of graphics, all straight and simple, clean lines, clear and useable well thought out pieces for difficult puzzles.
