5 out of 5 stars A great buy, loaded with info.......2006-03-14

This is my first review of any book ever, and I was impressed enough by the quality and content of this book to write this review. I am a 3d modeler in the process of putting together my reel, with this book I can proceed with the confidence that I now know everything that I need to know to put together the best reel I possibly can.

This book is an invaluable guide to putting together a top quality demo reel that is sure to be "watched" by a reviewer, lets put it that way. If you are an artist with talent, then this is the book that you will need to help you best showcase that talent to a potential employer in the form of a demo reel. Nearly every question you may have in regard to demo reel format and requirements are covered thoroughly in this book, and the entire chapter devoted to the advice of working cg professionals to the entry level artist (with talent) desiring to enter the cg industry is a must read. Overall, if you are serious about putting together a strong reel that will stand out in its quality, as well as in making an excellent impression of yourself as a professional seeking employment in the cg industry, GET THIS BOOK, YOU WILL NOT BE DISAPPOINTED!

4 out of 5 stars Great book but the resources could be better organized.......2005-01-14

So far this book has been very informative to read. the only issue I have with it (a very annoying issue) is the listing of companies and schools in the resource section. There are A TON of listings, but they are organized alphabetically by company name NOT by location!!!!

quote from book ( p.211)
"There may be a company that you'd really like to work for just down the street but, without the address listed [in this book], you'd never know that it was there"

Ok, so if I don't know the company exists, I'm probably not going to know the name of the company, so why list if alphabetically by company name??? What would be great was if there was a section for the U.S. and within that section, each state had it's own listing of companies. Same with schools. Your probably not going to be looking for a school by the name, its more about location. And if you do know the name of a school your interested in you probably already know its location. On the other hand, If you know the location you want to live in, you have to find out what schools/companies are there.

Anyway, I ended up taking a highlighter to the book and highlighting the cities that i was interest in, each with their own color.

This book is still great though, it has the listings of companies and schools, you just have to do a little extra work to scan through them all.

5 out of 5 stars reference chapters alone make it well worth.......2005-01-04

This book is focused on the job-hunting process - demo reels, resume, interviewing, salary negotiation. I found the chapter on freelancing, as well as the reference sections (books to read, animation studios and post houses) most enlightening. The compilation of animation studios and post houses alone makes this book well worth the money.

I also recommend "Getting a Job in Computer Graphics, Real Advice from Reel People", which has a more extensive discussion on what skills one needs for the different career paths and has a lot of interviews with people from the industry. The two books complement each other very well.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Research.......2003-10-10

This is a great book written by a solid guy in the business. All the research he has provided is a big boost for people wanting to know where the opportunities are within the animation and visual effects industry.
If animation is what you want to do then this is book that will give you the goods to getting the gig. I own 2 Post-Secondary 3D Animation and Multimedia schools and this will be required reading for the students.

5 out of 5 stars Best book for graduating CG students.......2003-10-07

This book would benefit anyone who is thinking about getting into the computer animation field. Just the list of all the production and game companies is worth the price of the book. As a graduate of a computer animation school, there were many tips and suggestions that I never learned in school and that everyone would benefit from. This is a MUST HAVE book!!!

Through five releases of Macromedia's industry-standard Web graphics software program, James Mohler has become the indispensable resource for those looking to master the power of Flash. Flash:8 Graphics, Animation & Interactivity delivers Mohler's widely praised hands-on approach to learning for the newest version of Macromedia® Flash. 5 out of 5 stars Great book for experienced software users trying to pick up Flash.......2007-09-23

After working through many "do something right now" tutorials - I felt like I could butcher my way through simple Flash projects and action script, but wasn't really using the software the way it was designed to be used.

I think this book is an ideal read if you've been through Flash tutorials that show you how to use the program, but don't walk you through an overview from top to bottom, explaining the idiosyncrasies, gotchas and tips along the way. While the lessons are not particularly project oriented (like Classroom in a book style), you get a framework for continued learning.

For a programmer / experienced software user who wants to learn Flash, I would recommend reading this book and finding tutorials online to go in deep on areas relevant to your specific project.

1 out of 5 stars Worst software book ever.......2007-07-12

I had the misfortune to buy this book for an online class on VR. We were supposed to work our way through the book chapter by chapter, as we took the class online. Admittedly, the online class did not support the flash part of the instruction in any way.

Having said that, I found this book to be the worst book ever for learning a software. The progression of the lessons was clunky and the files that were included as a support for each lesson were hard to use and sometimes impossible to understand. Instead of giving projects to work on, the book focused on explaining each and every button and menu item. One problem with this was a button or pallett or menu item would be mentioned in the text with no graphic to show where to find it. Often you could get lost in trying to find what the heck was being discussed. In fact, the book was very short on graphics, period, which is bad since the program itself is very visual.

I would never recommned this book to anyone who wants to learn flash.

The book introduce you to the software by practical projects. All projects are easy to follow. After completing those projects, you will have a solid basis for Vue 6.

5 out of 5 stars A good solid start for beginners with Vue 6.......2007-05-20

If you, like me, learn best by following project-based tutorials, you'll love this book. It's like having an experienced friend walk you through each area of Vue, step by step. Learn by doing. Exercises are easy to follow, logically paced. For the first time, I feel like I know what I'm doing, and I have Mr. Schrand to thank.

Let's hope the publisher has him do a book on advanced topics next!

4 out of 5 stars Good addition.......2007-03-23

This book wont wow you, but it is solid, besic content will help to understend application better.
If you advanced user, you propobly already know most of it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent training tool.......2007-03-21

This book is an excellent training tool for new users to Vue 6. Two issues with this book are as follows:

1. The book is wide, but not tall. It's akward to hold when trying to read it, causing you to have to lay it on a table.

2. This book was written for all version of Vue 6. There are several references to Vue 6 XStream features, which might cause confusion.

Overall, this is an excellent book for teaching the basics, and dabbles in the more complicated features of Vue.

Highly recomended.

4 out of 5 stars Great book - Poor graphics........2007-03-16

This is a great book but the graphics are less than stellar. Very difficult to follow at times, would be great if better screen shots were shown or printed in color.

5 out of 5 stars The Internship Bible for Animation, #1.......2002-06-03

I found this book to be the Bible for finding an internship in animation. Lots of animation companies, great descriptions of the companies, and advice on writing my resume. I was able to find an internship in the field. I highly recommend this book for high school seniors and college students in CG. I also recommend "Careers in Computer Graphics and Animation" these are two well needed resources.

5 out of 5 stars very useful.......2001-12-23

This books was very helpful in identifying the companies where I can apply for an internship. I live in Los Angeles but did not know how to locate and contact the companies in my area. This is a very useful book!!!

2 out of 5 stars Misleading Title, Mixed Content.......2001-09-29

In purchasing this book, I had little information to guide me beforehand; I made the decision based on commentary on other works by this author, the title, and my need for information on internships in this field.

I found myself greviously disappointed. While the information capsules about the employers are indeed helpful, no specifics were given for internships these employers might or might not offer. Instead, the contents of the book (aside from some prefatory material providing poor advice about resumes and cover letters) act as a directory to employers. While I am not discounting the helpfulness of such a directory, the misleading title and the quality of the prefatory material leave this reader with a very low opinion the party responsible for misleadingly marketing this volume.

Book Description

Exploring Drawing for Animation is an innovative introduction to 2D animation and inspirational skill-sharpener for working professionals. The authors creatively link drawing techniques and life drawing -human and animal anatomy, architecture, and scenery- to 2D animation production and outcomes. The instructional format builds animation skills from the ground up, using a technical foundation in drawing as a basis for exploring animation. Overviews span the topics of sequence drawing, character development, motion, proportional techniques, and animation clean-up. Together, these essential skills combine to help readers develop the drawing skills necessary to be a successful animator.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars So far off the mark, it's baffling.......2007-02-22

Have these authors ever done any animation? Have they ever SEEN any animation? This mostly contains carefully rendered fantasy drawings that you would never see animated. How they got this published is beyond me.

3 out of 5 stars Good for starters.......2006-12-10

I bought tis book a few years ago. It has some good stuff of how drawing relates to animation. It also sheds more light on to the process than a lot of books. However, after a few years of animation art school, I realized how bad the drawings were. If you want to learn about drawing for animation, check out Glen Vilppu's books. (he worked as a drawing instructor/trainer at some of the bigger studios in L.A.)

1 out of 5 stars Avoid this book, it's an embarrassment.......2006-11-20

Oh my, where to begin...

I posted some images of a few of the drawings from the pages of this book on the customer images link above. Feel free to take a look at those to see where I am coming from.

The authors of this book need a few drawing lessons themselves, though I'm not sure that would actually help, because they're beyond hopeless. The drawings in the book are beginner level, amateurish drawings and it's really sad to see that these guys are actually teaching students in an art school.

Aside from the obvious lack of personal drawing skill on the authors' parts, there is a lot of bad advice from an animation drawing point of view, like too much emphasis on measuring and copying the model and a completely misunderstood/misrepresented view of the all-important line of action.

Stay away from this book. These guys should be ashamed of themselves for putting this crap out there.

2 out of 5 stars Its more of a very lengthy article than a book on 2d animation.......2005-12-05

I made the mistake of buying this book, and I would like to warn you guys please , please dont waste your money on this title...This book is nothing more than a long overview on drawn animation , It is not and I repeate it is not a how to book , although the authors have tried to present it as a text book, its no more than an introduction to animaton drawing ,the authors try very hard to explain drawing and go all blah...blah...blah....but they dont tell you what to do , whats mentioned in this book can be known via a simple search on the net.I would advice customers to buy a copy of, Vilppu Drawing Manual by Glenn Vilppu and Animation : The mechanics of motion by Chris Webster. These books are practicle , simple , cheaper and would prove to be a thousand times more useful to the animation student.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent, fun treatise on animation drawing.......2005-06-30

I have worked as an animator, teacher and fine artist for over 30 years and this is the first art text I have ever seen that discusses how solid drawing skill relates to creating drawings for character designs and 2D animation. Most animation `how-to' books include some drawing instruction but do not address the important bridge between drawing and animation.

The authors present an entertainingly written book in an easy-to-read conversational tone along with illustrations that show the well-honed professional drawing and painting skills of this book's creators. It is obvious to the reader that the authors are seasoned artists and educators.

While this book is predominantly for learners of beginning to intermediate levels, anyone with an interest in the interdisciplinary issues within animation and drawing would benefit from picking up this gem of a text. Unfortunately, the title of the book suggests that it covers the technique of 2D animation in-depth, but this is a misnomer. Fortunately, 2D animation is commented on in a more important context: the development of effective observational drawing skills that will produce better animation drawings.

5 out of 5 stars Good Reference.......2005-03-08

This book comes with a great index, so that I can find what I am looking for with ease. As I dip in and out of the pages, I have questions answered that I did not even know to ask! AM is frustrating - It is a great program with little or no documentation, and this is a sorely needed resource.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2004-05-12

This is a great book. I wouldn't suggest it as your first read if you've never done any 3d animation, though. Do ALL the tutorials in the manual that comes with the software first. By the time you finish them you'll know most of the critical lexicon that seems to get some people so frustrated. 3d animation is complex and hard to learn. It's just less hard with Animation Master and this book at your side. If you get stuck on some detail I'd suggest either posting a question at the Hash forum or just move on to another topic in the book and come back to the problem later. Sometimes when you take a break from a problem and come back to it a few days later it becomes easier to solve. People who study the learning process actually have a name for this phenomenon, but I don't remember it . . . hehehe ;)

2 out of 5 stars A lot of type with a lot of hype.......2004-01-27

I purchased this book but found after receiving it and trying to use it that he types a lot of words but gives very little practicle direction. He supplies very few tutorials on how to use the material. He could take some lessons from the Jeff Paries book. In my opinion this book was not worth the money spent by a long shot.

4 out of 5 stars Essential Animation:Master Reference.......2003-07-30

Given the sparseness of Hash's packaged software manual, I'd say that this book is an essential baseline reference for A:M 2002 or A:M2003. I think the 2 complement each other. Use the Hash manual for some quick start action with the software with lots of pictures and then come back to this text for serious study.

I'm not sure the book is for pure beginners in 3D. For them I would recommend picking up "3D Graphics & Animation" by Mark Giambruno which provides a good overview of 3D terms and concepts.

Let's face it, 3D software is among the most challenging types of software one can attempt to learn. I found if I re-read the tutorials in Rogers' book a few times the information is there. Patience is required. Do not expect to get it all in one read. In a few places I would have liked more illustrations and cd-rom videos for some steps, but what is provided is adequate. The style and tone of the writing were in line with my learning needs. Rogers takes time to explain not just the A:M features, but many times also why and how they should be used in your art work like the chapter on lighting.

The book's scope is wide so if you need a lot of depth on a particular function it may not be covered with enough detail to suit your needs. In all fairness though, that book of details doesn't exist anywhere for A:M. All-in-all I think this is a solid work that deserves to be one of the references in your library when learning this software.

4 out of 5 stars Great compliment to the documentaion.......2003-07-16

The first review on this book wasn't very good. The review complained that the book was not for a beginner. He was very wrong. This book can be used by beginners to Animation Master. It is not designed to be a book for a beginner to Animation in general. The author does use lots of jargon, but to those familar with 3D Art and Animation it is nothing to worry about. The book is a great compliment to anyone's Animation Master skills. This book used in conjunction with the included documentation works great. There were certain techniques I was unsure about, but this book cleared them up. Again, I must stress that the book is not a beginners book to CG Animation , just a book for Animation Master beginners.

5 out of 5 stars definitely worth the money.......2005-01-04

this is one of the few books that offers practical advice on finding a job in the cg industry. besides the standard topics like putting together a resume and interviewing tips, it tells you what skills you need to build in order to be successful at different career paths (modeler vs rigger vs compositor, etc.) i also found the interviews with various people who already work in the industry very informative.

5 out of 5 stars BUY THIS BOOK!!!!.......2006-08-12

Amazing book!!! Best 3d Instructional book I have ever bought for ANY 3d program. I would even venture to say that it's the best graphic Design book if it weren't for the WOW! series of books and "Real world Illustrator."

KEEP IN MIND THAT THIS BOOK ONLY FOCUSES ON MODELING! But it does a great job explaining the complex in a simple way.

    Bottom Line: GET THIS BOOK!!!!

5 out of 5 stars fun modeling book.......2006-01-17

I had both of the authors books for an online class.

This book was a lot of fun, even though Maya itself is a bit much to take on with 4 other classes. The tutorials allow you to be creative, but still follow directions.

I really liked the information from Loomis - and got introduced to a whole new topic. I found several of his books on line, and they have helped me with composition. The authors introduce you to a couple cool new resources like that.

I wrote the authors for some advise, and they actually wrote me back :)

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource for teachers.......2005-09-20

I teach in a tech program at a community college. Recently, due to the loss of an adjunct, I had to take over the 3D course. I have experience with 3D Studio Max, but very little with Maya. This book has been wonderful. It is structured in a way that is very simple to build a class around. The skills are sequential, but get students creating interesting objects very quickly, so that they remain engaged. The teaching tools, available separately, include a course schedule, and Powerpoint slides to introduce the basic skills of each chapter. This has allowed me to walk in and teach a program that would have been very difficult otherwise.

4 out of 5 stars Tutorials are great, but the book itself fell apart........2005-09-18

The tutorials are really good, complex and thorough and the book does its' job of teaching you a lot about the tools in the program and how to make them do what you want them to. However, I had the book for a few days and pages began falling out of it. Not one or two but a lot. I never had a book do this before. The second complaint is that there seems to be a step left out of the tutorials here and there. I went crazy trying to figure out the brief introductory part about projecting a curve onto a surface to 'cut out' a shape; turns out it was because the instructions were incomplete.

The tutorials themselves are otherwise great and I still recommend this book despite these annoying flaws.

5 out of 5 stars had this text for class.......2005-01-21

took a CC class on Maya and used this book. i got a lot out of it. usually i work with 3d max. now i feel confident in maya. really good chapter on shading networks.
