Book Description

Fancy Nancy is back! And when her family decides to get a dog, she's certain she can be fancier than ever. After all, a papillon—a small, delicate, fluffy dog—is the ultimate accessory. But her family wants a large, plain dog. How unglamorous!

With Fancy Nancy's trademark humor and warmth, Nancy discovers that real fanciness does not depend simply on appearance but more on a genuine joie de vivre, which is a fancy phrase for having lots of fun.

5 out of 5 stars A must for any little girl!.......2007-10-02

I got my daughter her first Fancy Nancy book when she turned 2, and now everything that is girly she calls fancy Nancy, shoes, purses and anything sparkley! Great to read for bedtime too. I can't wait for the next books to come out!

I Can't understand why the first book was printed in the USA and this one is printed in CHINA! Is there lead in this book like many of their toys??
I think Amazon should list this if this is the case

5 out of 5 stars A very "posh" book!.......2007-09-26

I purchased Fancy Nancy and the Posh Puppy to go along with the original Fancy Nancy book for my 5 year old granddaughter . . . I had them sent directly to her house while I knew I would be visiting so we could open them together and start reading. My granddaughter loved them and I had to read them several times during our first sitting! The story is very cute and age-appropriate, and the illustrations and colors are perfect for little girls her age. I wish these books had been out when my girls were little! I love the word "posh" because I was born in the country where it's most popularly used.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars touching, to say the least.......2007-09-21

This book brings me to tears at the very thought of it. I got about 1/2 way through the darling pictures and wonderful, sweet words and the tears started. By the time I finished I was a mess. I'm sure it will touch every mother who reads it-it is definitely a book for a baby girl or daughter since the pictures depict a mother/daughter relationship. It's about the simple memories we make with our children that mean more than anything. It's also about the dreams we hold for them. I now have a FAVORITE new book, one that will definitely be bought for others as well. Don't miss this one!

5 out of 5 stars made me cry.......2007-09-17

Takes you through birth-college-grandchildren-old age within a small book. As they say, kids grow up in the blink of an eye. Good for a pre-teen gift from mom to daugther. Very touching, probably how most moms feel about their daugthers.

5 out of 5 stars Sweet Story of the Mother-Child Bond.......2007-09-15

I picked up this book in my local Toys-R-Us as my daughter picked among the Princess titles. I was looking for something special for an expecting friend and found it immediately in this book.

The book reminded me a little of "I'll Love You Forever" and "The Giving Tree" as it explores the changing relationship, and bonds as a child grows to adulthood.

The final page, when the mother imagines her own child with silver strands of hair, remembering her (the mother) was enough to bring me to tears in the store.

A beautiful book, not to be missed, a wonderful gift for mother and baby (not to mention one more useful and long lasting than similarly adorable baby bathrobes!)

5 out of 5 stars Someday.......2007-09-14

Someday is a book that looks like a child's book but has an adult message. I gave one to each of our adult daughters. It has a beautiful message about the circle of life.

5 out of 5 stars It Made Her Cry - My Wife, Not My Daughter!.......2007-08-28

I bought this book without much thought. When I got it home I read it. I loved it. I gave it to my wife to give to my daughter (it is really a mother-to-daughter book) and knew she would love it. Yup, she barely got through it she was crying so much. I just hugged her for a few minutes and told her she should read it with my daughter a page at a time until she could get through it. Then she cried again. This is a book for a Mom that really loves being a Mom to a little girl. I'd rate it six stars if I could.

WOW - the book came in just a few days. Great service. The book was in good shape and packaged well. THANK YOU!

5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-10-01

My 3 year old absolutely loves this book. The first time we checked it out from the library I didn't really think she cared for it much. But, then I happened to order it for one of her little friend's birthday and she was sooo excited! She ran around saying, "it's Fancy Nancy mommy!" It took some convincing to be able to wrap it up for her little friend. Everybody needs a little "fancy" in their life.

5 out of 5 stars Great children's book.......2007-09-30

I bought this book for my four year old grandaughter and it is now her favorite book. We are now going to have a 'fancy' party at a local restaurant just like Fancy Nancy did. Well written with nice illustrations.

5 out of 5 stars A very "fancy" book.......2007-09-26

I purchased two of the Fancy Nancy series for my 5 year old granddaughter - she loves them! When the book arrived, along with it's counterpart "Fancy Nancy and the Posh Puppy", she couldn't wait for us to read them together. She loved the story and the illustrations, and was attracted to the "girly" colors and the "before" and "after" drawings of Fancy's Nancy's bedroom! I think my granddaughter may be a "fancy" girl at heart!

All children want reassurance that their parents' love runs wide and deep. In Guess How Much I Love You, a young rabbit named Little Nutbrown Hare thinks he's found a way to measure the boundaries of love. In a heartwarming twist on the "I-can-do-anything-you-can-do-better" theme, Little Nutbrown Hare goes through a series of declarations regarding the breadth of his love for Big Nutbrown Hare. But even when his feelings stretch as long as his arms, or as high as his hops, Little Nutbrown Hare is fondly one-upped by the elder rabbit's more expansive love.

Anita Jeram's illustrations are bound to elicit an "aw" from even the sternest of readers; these loving rabbits are expressive, endearing, and never cloying. In turn, Sam McBratney tells a simple bedtime story of sweet familial love with humor, insight, and a delightful surprise at the end. Children and parents will love snuggling up for this one--a treat to be read again and again, just before the lights are turned out. (Click to see a sample spread. Text © 1994 by Sam McBratney. Book Description

The American Booksellers Book of the Year nominee is available as a sturdy board book for the youngest of children. Little Nutbrown Hare wants to show Big Nutbrown Hare how very much he loves him - but love as big as his is very hard to measure!

5 out of 5 stars For new baby.......2007-09-22

The first time I heard of this book was in my childbirth class. I loved it so much I had to buy it. I'm hoping it will become one of my baby's favorite books.

5 out of 5 stars Good all-around baby book.......2007-09-19

I bought this baby book based on the reviews and the fact that Guess How Much I Love You is one of my favorite children's books. The book does a nice job of asking enough questions to make a complete record for your baby without being overly burdensome. Some of the other books I looked at seriously asked what the weather was on the day you found out your were pregnant. Seriously, who would care about that? This baby book also gives great suggestions for a few pictures which is helpful--like the place to put a picture of you pregnant. I am very pleased.

1 out of 5 stars Don't Like the Message.......2007-09-15

I know many people love this book. I don't know why. We received one as a gift, and after reading it to my daughter, I was disturbed by the story. I felt sorry for the bunny whose parent invalidated his expression of love on each page. As many other reviewers said, it was a competition the adult wouldn't let the child win. This book contains a mean-spirited, misguided, sad, and disturbing message.

5 out of 5 stars Family favorite.......2007-08-01

"Guess how much I love you" is a classic. The story is a simple dialog between a big rabbit (the parent) and a little rabbit (the baby), each professing and comparing the depth & "height" of their love for each other. We read this book almost every day to our infant daughter. She loves the watercolor illustrations & coos at the pictures. A lovely addition to a kid' book collection.

4 out of 5 stars Wonderful - this really is a very good book.......2007-07-24

This is a fabulous book for little children and the grownups who read to them. When children are read to daily, they learn to love reading. Perfect bedtime stories, to calm everyone down and make us ready for sweet dreams. If you can find the LARGE size book get it- they're fabulous keepsakes. Perfect gifts for any child, and a perfect tradition in your own home and family!

5 out of 5 stars God's Faithfulness.......2007-08-02

The book is a wonderful nonfiction that displays God's awesome faithfulness and presence through the continued story of The Baxter Family. I was so taken that I could hardly put the book down and I'm eager to begin the Sunrise Series. These books are encouraging in my life as well, reminding me of God's promises and truths in my own life. Thank you for encouraging me in my walk with Christ!

5 out of 5 stars INSPIRATIONAL LOVE STORY.......2007-07-19

This is one of Karen Kingsbury's best books, and certainly her best love story. An award winning book, it's also by far the best of the Firstborn series. She's crafted the characters in the Baxter family so well that you feel as though you are a member of this family. I highly recommend Forever! The Candidate: A Novel

Book Description

The kitchen window at Nanna and Poppy's house is, for one little girl, a magic gateway. Everything important happens near it, through it, or beyond it. Told in her voice, her story is both a voyage of discovery and a celebration of the commonplace wonders that define childhood. It is also a love song devoted to that special relationship between grandparents and grandchild.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Happy mood and wonderful grandparent relationship.......2007-09-10

It can be hard to find books with positive depictions of relationships with grandparents -- there are so many stereotypes of the elderly as being unfriendly or aloof, as well as what it means to be a grandparent (i.e. that being a grandmother is synonymous with a 90 year old knitting in a rocking chair with her white hair tucked in a bun). These seem outdated and inapplicable to most kids' lives these days, and I enjoyed a book that presented a fresh, positive look at the grandchild/grandparent relationship. "The Helo, Goodbye Window" shows the most important aspect of all: true warmth between a girl and her grandparents. She has a wonderful relationship with them that seems to benefit all three of them, and the happy mood created by the words and the pictures makes this an enjoyable reading experience.

The matter of characters' ethnicity(ies) is infinitely more noticeable in the discussions of the book than in the book itself; "Black, white, just right!" this book is not. As in real life, all the characters are brown, and you can draw your own conclusions on what "race" you'd like to classify them as (or not), based on how much that matters to you.

My son was crazy about this book before it won the Caldecott, and that's what matters in my situation. I disagree with those who found the pictures to be inferior, but I see no reason to argue about it. Those who enjoy any book can continue to do so, while others can move on to find others that suit them better.

5 out of 5 stars Nice.......2007-01-15

This is a really nice story about grandparents. My kids and I really enjoy this story.

5 out of 5 stars Calldecott Medal again the best.......2007-01-15

This book was a delight and could be enjoyed by children Young and old. I am a retired librarian as well as a teacher and a grandmother of seven.
This book brought smiles, giggles, and much comment from my grandchildren. I would strongly recommend it to anyone. Many of the situations have taken place with my grandchildren, my husband and myself.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful and Endearing.......2007-01-03

My daughter is 6 years old, and this is one of my all time favorite books we have ever read. It captures the sweet and magical love between children and grandparents. I loved the illustrations and the text is like something taken right from a child's mouth, in the most simple and poignant way. In my mind it is a classic and something I will be buying for children for many years to come.

5 out of 5 stars The Hello, Goodbye Window: A Familiar Experience with Grandparents.......2006-12-01

As a teacher, I used The Hello, Goodbye Window during our family theme to discuss grandparents and the special relationships children have with them. My Pre-K students did not connect with the symbolism of the window, but enjoyed the pictures of the grandparents' house. This book launched a great discussion of the children's experiences with their own grandparents.

Author Norton Jester uses simple events and experiences, such as running through the sprinkler, to describe a child's magical experience at her Nanna and Poppy's house. Chris Raschka's illustrations are colorful and imaginative - almost as if one of my students drew them. However, this open and artistic style did not detract from my students' interest in this text.

This text is a great launching point for a discussion about grandparents for the early childhood and primary education fields. Educators with primary age students would be able to discuss the significance of the window. Relevant for all ages, this text highlights a child's special relationship with her grandparents - a relationship children treasure.

5 out of 5 stars My 2 year old loves this book.......2007-09-18

This is a great, short, funny book for preschoolers. It is just an easy read with a simple story. A little girl is indulgent and eats too many pink cupcakes and turns pink... Highly recommended as a great read over and over story. It isn't the most clever writing but rather a fun story.

1 out of 5 stars Buy the book Fancy Nancy instead.......2007-09-08

I was disappointed in this Pinkalicious book. If you have not already purched the book Fancy Nancy for your daughter you should -- much better book! My daughter is 5 and she still loves her Fancy Nancy book -- it is appropriate for ages 2-5 I'd say.

A friend told me how her daughter loves this book so I bought it for my grand-daughter (4). We have read it almost every night since we got it. She reads the word "pink" each time it comes up which makes her feel like she is reading. Great book! Pictures are really neat too. I recommend it for everyone who loves pink!

Told in a wonderfully inviting style, this Bible storybook shares many beloved Bible stories and reveals how the news and message of Jesus unfolds throughout Scripture, from the Old Testament all the way through the New Testament. Jesus in the Story helps readers love and appreciate Jesus and begin their own journey of faith. Beautiful 4-color artwork throughout.

5 out of 5 stars Heavenly.......2007-10-02

I ordered this book for my grandchildren after I heard a reading from the book on a radio program. My daughter loves the book--as do her children. She uses it for story time and devotional time. Clear presentation of the Gospel with each story.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-09-08

Instead of just stories this book brings out the "meaning" behind each, that it's all about Jesus.

5 out of 5 stars Showing the Centrality of Christ in the Scriptures to Children.......2007-08-18

Is the Bible a book of stories? good morals? heroes? No, suggests Sally Lloyd-Jones. Influenced by New York pastor and author Timothy Keller, Lloyd-Jones takes the major movements in the Bible's plot line as well as the familiar Sunday School stories and shows children how the entire Bible points to one man, the God-Man: Jesus Christ.

This is an excellent resource for families in a biblically illiterate age. I highly recommend this book to you. Another outstanding resource is David Helm's The Big Picture Story Bible.

5 out of 5 stars An asset to devotion time........2007-08-13

My daughter and I use this book probably twice a week. The stories are short, but not too short. They all leave the door wide open for a discussion about Jesus. My daughter enjoys the stories as do I. Plenty of well-drawn pictures too. An asset to our devotion time.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful Children's Bible!.......2007-08-09

This book is amazing - it is humorous and interesting and the kids listened with great interest to all of the stories. Every single story mentions Christ and how He is tied into the "big picture" of the Bible - from the Old Testament to the New. We love this book!

Book Description

"Michael," said Karl. "There's a really big bear in the backyard." This is how three children meet Stillwater, a giant panda who moves into the neighborhood and tells amazing tales. To Addie he tells a story about the value of material goods. To Michael he pushes the boundaries of good and bad. And to Karl he demonstrates what it means to hold on to frustration. With graceful art and simple stories that are filled with love and enlightenment, Jon Muth -- and Stillwater the bear -- present three ancient Zen tales that are sure to strike a chord in everyone they touch.

5 out of 5 stars Great for philosophy enthusiasts of any age (and anyone who likes big pandas).......2007-09-22

Zen Shorts is a picture book written and illustrated by Jon J. Muth. But it's also a short story collection. And it's also a philosophy book. And it has a giant panda. Oh, and it is a Caldecott Honor book too.

The story starts when siblings Addy, Michael, and Karl meet Stillwater, a large Panda who wanders into their backyard to retrieve his umbrella. I love the opening scenes of the story. Karl, the youngest sibling, is looking out a window and telling Michael he sees a huge bear. Eventually all of the kids go out and say hello to Stillwater. Addy introduces Karl, who is "shy around bears he doesn't know." I find that phrase so enchanting. This kind of charm continues throughout the book.

The next day Addy meets Stillwater for tea. Then Michael and Stillwater hang out. Then Karl goes swimming with Stillwater.

Each outing is accompanied by an appropriate short story. The first is about a man (panda) who gives a gift to a robber. Another is about a man who knows that luck is a many-faceted thing. The final story is about a monk carrying an unnecessary burden. I'll never explain the stories as well as Muth tells them, so you should just read the book.

The illustrations of Stillwater and the children are beautifully rendered watercolors. The coloring is subtle with quite intricate line work for the drawings. The stories between the "real" story are printed on pastel backgrounds and illustrated with silhouettes so that they have a clearly different look from the rest of the book.

When you're finished you should also check out the afterward which explains the underlying philosophy for each story. (Muth has a lot of Buddhist/Taoist influences.)

This is a great book to read with older children because even if they don't get the philosophy, the stories are approachable and they'll get something from it. (Even youngsters will enjoy the pictures.) It's a great introduction to philosophy, a fact that becomes clear after reading the afterward, for "students" of any age. Muth does an admirable job creating a picture book that children and grownups can enjoy together.

5 out of 5 stars I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE THIS BOOK!!!!.......2007-09-19

this book has it all, great watercolor paintings (i am a classically trained artist so this is important to me), great story, and meaningfull messages. i read this to my two year old daughter who is a book fanatic and can sit quietly for more than an hour and listen to long stories. for those of you with very small kids who may just be begging to read longer stories hear is some advice 1.don't give up if your child does not sit through the whole book the first time you read it small children, like my daughter, like farmiliar things and sometimes it just takes a few passes for them to reconize and chose a certain story, 2.don't chose to read a book when your child is bubbling over with energy, and 3.with longer stories it can also help to use a lot of inflection and tone to create intrest before your little one starts turning the page. this book is moderate in wording, not super long but not as simple as short verses or ryming stories. this book has a certain eligance to it that reflectes its message. it is just beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Gentle way to raise issues w/ kids.......2007-09-18

I like to treat my kids with respect and gentleness. Books that help me are a treasure. Jon Muth is a regular source of those kinds of books. Zen Shorts is not overdone or watered down. It is simple and beautiful and useful. It makes great literature more accessible to young folks. It helps parents and kids trying to live a more mindful or aware life.

My son Tyler says:

"This book is really great. From this book I learned about friendship and kindness, even though I'm already a kind boy. And I learned that good luck and bad luck are all mixed up. Please buy this book for your child. Bye."

5 out of 5 stars Beutiful Zen Moments.......2007-09-13

Finally a children's book that not only entertains but also make the child (at least my son) raise questions and discuss. I picked up the book on a wimp from the return cart in the bookstore and I have enjoyed reading it with my son ever since. We are waiting anxiously for the next Zen book from Jon Muth.

Book Description

Jodi Picoult's novels have been hailed as "engrossing" (People) and "addictively readable" (Entertainment Weekly). Now, the author of Salem Falls and Plain Truth examines the fault lines of a troubled marriage in Picture Perfect-an "unfailingly intelligent...undeniably literary psychological drama."(Booklist)

"Picoult writes with an all-knowing and piercing eye. Hers is an important book from a talented writer we hope to hear from again and again." (Library Journal)

To the outside world, they seem to have it all. Cassie Barrett, a renowned anthropologist, and Alex Rivers, one of Hollywood's hottest actors, met on the set of a motion picture in Africa. They shared childhood tales, toasted the future, and declared their love in a fairy-tale wedding. But when they return to California, something alters the picture of their perfect marriage. A frightening pattern is taking shape-a cycle of hurt, denial, and promises, thinly veiled by glamour. Torn between fear and something that resembles love, Cassie wrestles with questions she never dreamed she would face: How can she leave? Then again, how can she stay?

4 out of 5 stars Early Picoult different than the Picoult of 2007.......2007-09-30

It's refreshing to go back and read a Jodi Picoult novel that is one of her first. There isn't a looming courtroom drama unfolding in this book. There isn't depressing jailhouse/prison scenes that make me think that I would die if I ever ended up in prison. This book instead investigates a relationship between a man and a woman, and what happens when love becomes demanding and possessive. I wish Picoult would go back to writing more like this, and she almost did in The Tenth Circle: A Novel. I guess I'm just so tired of constantly seeing moral dilemmas played out in courtrooms. I would like to see her attack these subjects without someone having to constantly commit a crime and do the time. If you want something else of her's to read that doesn't involve courtroom drama, read Harvesting the Heart: A Novel.

5 out of 5 stars Picture Perfect.......2007-08-20

Jodi Picoult definitely didn't disappoint me with this book. I love the way an abusive relationship was portrayed... it shows that it's not her fault that she stayed with him, and that you can still love someone who hurts you. But it also shows that things aren't always what they seem, and that things that are "Picture Perfect" can also have problems. Cassie's marriage to Alex is full of love, but also full of hate. But the hate isn't directed towards each other.

I don't know why, but I loved this book. Not as much as My Sister's Keeper or The Pact, but definitely more than The Tenth Circle.

1 out of 5 stars Very disappointing...........2007-08-13

Jodi Picoult came highly recommended to me from a book editor friend and so I ran to the store to pick up "Picture Perfect". What a waste! The writing was very choppy and non-sensical at times. In addition, I found it very difficult to believe any of the characters. The ending was quick, lame and overall anti-climatic. It left me feeling like, "I wasted all this time reading this for what?". I'm not sure about the other Jodi Picoult books, but this one makes me not even want to waste any time reading the others.

3 out of 5 stars A Jodi Picoult Fan.......2007-08-13

I have really enjoyed all of Jodi Picoult's books so far. However, this one didn't keep my interest. It was okay, but not great.

3 out of 5 stars Plain Truth was better, but still a wonderful story from Jodi.......2007-06-13

I have read Jodi Picoult's "Plain Truth" and several of her other novels and I thought Picture Perfect was a wonderful story, but I didn't think the writing was a good as the book Plain Truth. There are numerous excellent reviews that detail the story so I won't add more print. However, I thought the story moved along at a brisk pace and overall it was a wonderful story. I'm not losing faith in Jodi; I'll still purchase her next novel, with a view towards that Picture Perfect being a temporary setback in her storytelling abilities.

For a stunning Women's Fiction then I highly recommend Gathering of Cans by Robert L. Saunders. This is a terrific story of Zoie Baker, the heroine and a dauntless dreamer that feels right down to her bone that she can build a swimming pool for the local kids by gathering aluminum cans. She stumbles on unique cans, i.e., the Gold Bud can, Nehi, etc., and these cans take the reader on a fascinating journey into ZOie's life, from 1945 during World War II through 1980's. Don't miss this warm and wonderful novel. You won't be disappointed. Good-bye.
