3 out of 5 stars Great ideas to get your creative juices flowing.......2004-11-12

I got this book from the library prior to commiting to buying it. After ordering 8 books from Amazon this one wasn't one of them. Most of the ideas are too darn "cutsie" for me (i.e. cropping your baby's photos and putting mouse or bunny ears and whiskers is my definition of "cutsie"--not my style of scrapbooking, I'm not here to offend anybody who prefers this). The back of the book has lettering patterns and title ideas which anybody may find on numerous websites such as scrapbooking.com. I suggest this book is great for those begginers who need ideas for baby scrapbook themes: Documenting pre- & post-pregnancy, baby's firsts, baby's nursery, etc. It does not have much explanation on how the pages were constructed, but for my own sake I usually don't follow step-by-step,visualizing the parts of a layout from the photo itself. This book may be good for a beginner, but more advanced scrapbookers might find it too outdated.

3 out of 5 stars Decent idea book, but hard to replicate what you see........2004-01-20

There's a ton of pages to look at, but not as much information about technique as some other books I've seen. If you're already into scrapbooking and just need some fresh ideas, this could be helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Good creative ideas.......2003-01-25

I have been scrapbooking for years now and with baby #1 on the way wanted some additional creative ideas. This book does have some great ideas of varying complexity and documenting some of those moments that I may have not thought of. I recommend this for anyone doing baby pages.

5 out of 5 stars Loved it!.......2002-06-04

This was a great idea book. Get this book before your baby even arrives to help give you pointers on what to take pictures of and things to keep for your scrapbook. Plus, it helps pass the time by! After my baby was born I still had "fetal-brain-drain" and needed ideas for page layouts. In the back there are ideas for page titles and poems to include in your baby's book. Well worth the money......

5 out of 5 stars I just love it!.......2002-02-01

This book is great! It has wonderful ideas for putting together all the baby pictures. I would recommend it to anyone!

1 out of 5 stars Maybe I'm just too uptight??.......2004-01-06

I ordered this book (two of them) as Christmas gifts for family members. After looking through it, which is basically a collection of naked baby pictures, I realized I couldn't give this book to anyone and I didn't even want people to see it at my house, so I hope to return it. I hate to offend the author, knowing he will probably read this. Maybe he is from Europe or something, where pictures of naked children are more acceptable and not considered perverse. It wouldn't have been quite as bad, except that there is at least one picture of JUST the genital area - no face, no legs, just torso and genitals. Close up. The babies faces are adorable, and clothed babies are great (which there are none of in this book), but this book just seems like a legal dream come true for pedophiles. Why the picture of JUST the genitals? Many of the pictures are of the entire naked baby. At least then you can pretend you're looking at the baby's face. I don't see any point in having so many pictures of naked babies unless you want to come across as a weirdo. Yeah, I realize it's "art". Whatever. It's not the kind of art that's going to be in my house. If you are as embarrassed as me by this sort of thing, don't bother buying this book. I hope I didn't just convince a bunch of pedophiles to purchase this book. Even my husband agreed it was over the top and there was no reason why we couldn't just look at babies' faces or clothed babies. If you want a coffee-table book, get something with travel pictures in it. Or, I hear Al Gore has a new book with family pictures in it (wearing clothes.) Yeah, I'm uptight about this type of thing, but I think most people are just like me, so I wanted to warn you what is actually in there before you buy the book in case you would be as embarrassed as me by having a book like that in your home. I hope Amazon will take this back and issue me a credit.

1 out of 5 stars Coffee Table Book.......2004-01-05

This book has many good examples of pictures of newborn babies but does not have any details on how to take pictures or what techniques to use other than the picture examples. If you are looking for a coffee table book this is the book for you. If you want a book to show you how to .. this is not for you.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful gift for new parents........1999-01-09

This book captures the unique qualities of a newborn baby. A fleeting moment that most new parents don't appreciate because they are too exhausted! It makes me want to have another baby just to experience those first few days and have a chance to take some pictures of my own.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic and tastefully documented newborn infant photos.......1997-04-23

Fantastic black and white photography of newborn infants ranging from 1 to 22 days old. The photographs are tastefully done and show the beauty of a newborn. Rather than bore the reader with words, Schatz allows the story to be told in photos. I highly recommend it to anyone interested in newborns and to all expecting or new parents.

Archivist Craig Tuttle's book, targeted at the lay person, provides the answer to the question of how to preserve papers and photographs. In An Ounce of Preservation, he provides a clear and concise discussion of the causes of paper and photograph deterioration and he teaches the reader to recognize the damage caused by such environmental conditions as temperature, humidity, fungi, insects and rodents, light exposure, pollutants, water damage, framing, lamination, fasteners and adhesives, fire and theft. Included in the long list of paper-based and photographic items which can be preserved and repaired are letters, books, posters, works of art on paper, certificates and awards, comic books, journals, scrapbooks, magazines, newspapers, stamps, report cards, sports cards, greeting cards, postcards, black and white and color photographs, negatives, slides and movie film. An Ounce of Preservation also includes information on the care and handling of paper-based items and photographic materials and techniques for the repair and cleaning of mildly damaged items. In addition, there are four appendices which provide a reference guide to damage/cause,a descriptive list of preservation supplies, where these supplies can be purchased and sources to contact for additional information on paper and photograph preservation. As an added bonus, the book includes a chapter on how to arrange paper and photographic collections for easy storage and retrieval. Also included is a preservation glossary, a bibliography, an index and 14 black and white photographs, which illustrate the different types of damage to paper-based items and photographs.

5 out of 5 stars Terrific Advice.......2006-12-01

This is one terrific book. Just what I needed to get started with my old photos and papers before it was too late to salvage them. Obviously, Mr. Tuttle (the author) knows his stuff. "My stuff" has been saved by his sage advice. Thanks, Mr. Tuttle.

3 out of 5 stars A Conservator's Review.......2000-04-03

As a guide book written specifically for lay persons, An Ounce of Preservation has an educational mandate. As such, it is compelled to offer well-researched and accurate information in all details. At the same time, it attempts to simplify a highly complex field to fit the format of a short booklet that can be understood by a reader who has never concerned himself with document preservation before. The main dilemma of this book becomes apparent at the point where these two goals meet: simplification versus accuracy - can both coexist? Some critical observations must be made that demonstrate how the author has compromised the accuracy of his text by falling into some of the traps of over-simplification.

In the process of simplification, information must be excluded, and the choice of what to omit and what to highlight is not an easy one, particularly in view of the rich history of photographic processes. The guiding principle should be to describe foremost the processes most likely to be encountered by the family historian in his personal collection of historic documents. Unfortunately, Tuttle has decided to concentrate on less common processes. He mentions gelatin based black and white prints in only one sentence, and almost as an afterthought (p. 28), although this process accounted for the vast majority of all photographic prints for about 70 years. Collodion prints, though widespread and likely to be present in every album that goes back at least to the 1880s, are not even mentioned once. Rather, the author describes negatives in detail and even dedicates two sentences to albumen coated glass plates, which never abounded and are exceedingly rare today.

Complex cause/effect relationships may become too difficult to describe in short paragraphs, but their simplification can easily lead to slight or great inaccuracies, as can be seen throughout the book. The use of parentheses as a space saving method of explaining a former term can lead to misunderstandings, as for example with the description of the calotype process, which "involved the application of silver iodide (a light-sensitive solution) to a sheet of paper..." (p. 24). Silver iodide may be light-sensitive, but it is not a solution, as Tuttle's wording implies. Silver iodide is in fact insoluble in water, and can thus only be formed on the paper fibres by the subsequent application of two aqueous solutions to the paper surface: that of potassium iodide and that of silver nitrate. Had the author formulated his explanation accurately, he might have written, for example: "...involved the precipitation of light-sensitive silver iodide on a sheet of paper". The use of chlorides was actually more common than that of iodides at that time.

Next to shortening by exclusion of information, the author has chosen to use what he calls plain language - a term that indicates that he is avoiding complex language which the lay reader could not understand. In going down this path, Tuttle uses a terminology that implies that the issue at hand is really more complicated than he can expect the reader to grasp. One of the most used terms in this book is "pH-balanced", which is neither defined, nor used consistently in one sense. The true meaning of this term, which, incidentally, is not commonly used in conservation literature, remains elusive no matter how long it is contemplated. In An Ounce of Preservation it is used to describe any material that is archivally "good", but it does not, for example, differentiate between paper with an alkaline reserve (p. 15) and that which is pH neutral (p. 59). Should a family genealogist come to me as a trained conservator and ask if he should use "pH-balanced" paper to house his negatives, I could only respond with a blank look on my face. Tuttle misses the important opportunity in this and other cases to give his readers the adequate vocabulary to communicate on an appropriate level with professional conservators.

On a positive note, the author has kept the chapter on repair and cleaning very basic (p. 63). The techniques he describes are among those that are considered standard preservation measures in the contemporary understanding of minimal intervention. Any complex treatment, Tuttle stresses, should only be carried out by a professional conservator. This makes it clear that many treatments can easily lead to greater damage if carried out lightheartedly. The inclusion of a description of the ethics and complexities of the work of a conservator as well as definitions of basic terminology might have been beneficial, however, as self-help books will often give the reader the impression that a do-it-yourself approach will always work.

The absolute condemnation of the lamination of documents (pp. 45-46) brings up the concept of reversibility, which is fundamental (even if impossible to comply with) for the understanding and application of conservation treatments. Although the book does cover many sources of deterioration and gives hints on housing documents, the most important advice is missing: how to actually handle your papers and prints. The ground rules should be clearly stated at the beginning of the chapter on storage and care (p. 55): maintain a clean workspace, refrain from smoking, eating and drinking in the presence of important documents, and simply wash your hands before handling them. Humans, after all, are the greatest source of danger to documents.

Despite the many small inaccuracies, omissions, and simply false statements, such as the definition of relative humidity in the glossary (p. 93), distributed throughout the book, An Ounce of Preservation does install in the reader a sense of appreciation for those old papers and faded photographs in the basement. This is an important achievement in itself. Apparently, an expanded second edition of this book is in preparation. One must hope that, prior to publication, Craig Tuttle will submit his manuscript to a paper conservator and photo historian for review, so that his book can advance from being 'recommendable with reservations and in view of the lack of alternatives' to 'wholly recommendable' from the conservator's point of view.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect for the beginning family historian!.......1999-04-14

With no background in caring for old photos and papers, I was in a quandry over what to do with the box full of items left to me by my deceased uncle. I didn't have the money for a professional to refresh and repair the photos, many of which suffered from long years of neglect. So I went online in search of a publication that would tell me where to start. An Ounce of Preservation provided me, a true archival dummie, with the groundwork I needed to begin the restoration project. As I sent off for information from companies listed in the appendix of the book, I learned more and more, unti I now feel like a blooming expert! I have a great scrapbook of my uncle's photos that I can pass on to my grandchildren, and it's a scrapbook that takes care of the items instead of aiding in their destruction. Without all the easy-to-follow techniques and many, many leads for more information provided in the book, I doubt if I would have ever had the courage to tackle the job myself. And since I didn't have the money for professional help, all those precious items of family history would still be deteriorating away in my closet. I contacted the publisher (to find out how to contact the author) only to learn that a greatly expanded second edition of this book is in the works. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to learn the basics -- it was all news to me!

2 out of 5 stars An Ounce of Information.......1999-03-27

"An Ounce of Preservation" is more aptly described as a pamphlet which delivers only the most BASIC information that most people nowadays regard as common knowledge. The reader looking for practical help, such as what solution to use to clean a smudged photo from the twenties, will find very little to go by (no more than a three-sentence paragraph for the cleaning of old photos). This thin book might have been more successful if the author had limited his scope and treated his subject in more detail. As it is, it's a lot to pay for text that can be read in less than an hour.

5 out of 5 stars Concise Overview of Major Types of old Photos & Their Care........1998-06-11

To learn more about old photographs and their care, I ordered three books; An Ounce of Preservation by Craig Tuttle, Collector's Guide to Early Photographs by O. Henry Mace, and Care and Identification of 19th Century Photographic Prints by James Reilly.

An Ounce of Preservation, A Guide to the Care of Papers and Photographs, is a small, almost pocket size book that can be read quickly. It has a good description of all the major types / categories of photographs (Daguerreotypes, Tintypes, Albumen, etc.) that have been produced since the birth of photography. It helps identify the specific type of damage likely to be found, and then provides advice to both reduce further deterioration and to treat the damage.

Unlike the other books, An Ounce of Preservation provides a background on the paper manufacturing process, which is helpful for understanding the base structure of an old photograph. Also unlike the other books, it also addresses the care of various other types of paper documents (manuscripts, postage stamps, trading cards, postcards, comic books, magazines, etc.)

This is a great book for gaining a basic understanding of the types / categories of old photographs in existence and easy-to-implement procedures for reducing their deterioration. Anyone who cares about maintaining old family records or local historical records would find this book very useful. If a detailed knowledge is desired regarding either the types of old photographs or the proper care for old paper based photographs, then one of the other two books I purchased would be better. However, the other two books are not as concise, and you would need to purchase both of them to learn about both the types of photographs and their care.

Product Description

Few of us take time to pause and focus on what is truly important to us, to appreciate just how blessed we are to be living in our unique moment in time and with the people we know and love. Instead, we keep on doing what we do, although we realize -- or at least suspect -- that something precious and wonderful is rushing by us far faster than we comprehend.

As a photographer of children and their families, Karen Henrich lives her life moment by moment, capturing timeless images of babies and small children in all their innocence and wonder. Preserving precious moments in these young lives -- images of time that she makes timeless -- is her life's passion. The Wonder of Babies consists of a few of those moments, accompanied by thought-provoking quotations from many who have passed this way before us. In this beautiful, awe-inspiring book we are privileged to see babies as they are, in moments of wonder, viewing the world afresh through eyes that are filled with amazement, awe, and discovery.

These pictures of babies -- sometimes in wondrous moments with their mothers -- show them in moments of discovery or awakening, finding something new. These children instinctively know that their lives and the world around them are precious and wonderful. Welcome to their world, the world seen through the eyes of a child, the wondrous world of babies.

What a beautiful book to sit back with and contemplate a child's inner soul! Karen Henrich, a photographer of children, captured the most special moments of a child's life and created a compilation of pictures and thought-provoking quotes in her book "The Wonder of Babies: The World Through the Eyes of a Child." Each photograph of a child, caught in a natural pose, portrays how spontaneous and unscathed children are.

Henrich, with her expertise and innate ability to see the special moments, gives us the opportunity to do the same. Most of us, as parents, go through the child rearing days with many struggles along the way and don't capture all the special moments that a child has. A quote in the book by Marceline Cox best describes our experience: "Parents are often so busy with the physical rearing of children that they miss the glory of parenthood, just as the grandeur of the trees is lost when raking leaves."

"The Wonder of Babies" is definitely a must-have coffee table book, and a book to look through during our quiet times of contemplation. Kudos to Henrich for giving us the opportunity to appreciate life through the child's eyes.

Shireen Dodson was on vacation with her family when she decided she needed to find "a way to spend some special time" with her daughter. What she did was start a mother-daughter book club. In this sweet little book, Dodson offers practical advice about starting a similar club. The heart of the book, though, is in the insights she offers about the benefits--the chance to explore ideas and feelings, to discuss each other's lives, and to establish what Dodson calls a "bridge of sharing" that involves both mother and daughter listening to each other.

Book Description

Combining the practical with the personal, The Mother-Daughter Book Club tells the story of 10 mothers and their preteen daughters and how their relationships were enriched through a monthly reading club. With step-by-step guidelines, stories, anecdotes, reading lists, sample themes and related activities, it offers practical instructions for starting a book club while encouraging mothers and daughters to learn to talk openly with one another.

At a key stage of their daughter's development, mothers will find a hopeful antidote to depression, eating disorders, self-destructive behavior and other problems facing adolescent girls. Most important, The Mother-Daughter Book Club shows that reading, learning and spending time together helps girls build self-esteem.

With suggested reading lists from authors and experts ranging from Kaye Gibbons, Joyce Carol Oates and Tipper Gore to Henry Louis Gates, Jr., Beth Winship and Ann Martin, The Mother-Daughter Book Club has the potential to inspire whole networks of reading clubs nationwide.

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Useful Resource.......2007-02-18

I think the reviewer that gave this 2 stars for the fact that it wasn't about boys completely missed the point. The woman who wrote this book started a mother-daughter book group and wrote about THAT experience. She also folded in a lot of great book recommendations from a variety of sources, along with many tips about how to have a successful mother-daughter book club. If that is what you are interested in doing or have already started, this will be a very useful resource for you. It will give you ideas about books to read, meeting format, additional activities and other places to look for ideas.

A friend and her daughter recently invited my daughter and me to join a book club she was forming. We have used a lot of the ideas from this book and found them to have improved our experience of the book club.

2 out of 5 stars Jumping on the band wagon.......2003-07-13

I thought that the book was going to be wonderful after reading the introduction. However, after reading the first chapter I realized that I was wrong. The concept of a parent/child book club is marvelous, but to assume that boys do not need it as well is idiocy. The author jumps on the band wagon that girls are repressed in the classroom and are in dire need of help. The book includes statements such as reading is "especially meaningful for a girl, because I think in school girls tend to be a little reticent and hesitant to speak up". PLEASE!! Give it up already! Everyone is sick of hearing about how bad girls have it. I have been in a lot of classrooms and let me assure you that girls are NOT afraid to speak up. I am a professional woman with a daughter, and I can only hope that I am able to raise her in today's society without her being warped into thinking that she is some poor child in need of saving because, without intervention, she is destined for failure.
Both boys and girls need to be raised in such a way as to bring out their best and help them reach their full potential. So, stop bashing boys (which is the implied undertone of the message) just to build up girls and stop implying that a girl can not be strong and confident unless she is as good as, or better than, a boy in subjects that are typically dominated by males. People need to realize that children have their own strengths and weaknesses and that is a fact of life.
Why can't someone write a book that is a little positive on subjects like this? It would be a lot better than this biased (and misguided) message.
Great concept, poor presentation.

5 out of 5 stars Anxiously waiting our first meeting........1997-07-01

Give Shireen Dodson and the Mother-Daughter Book Club 10 gold stars. Complete instructions along with excerpts from their members makes this book a must for mothers interested in SHARING special times with their daughters and breaking the communication gap. The book comes with extensive reading lists and letters from a number of famous people from all walks of life. After reading the stories about their meetings and the closeness that can be shared between a mother and daughter through reading, my daughter and I set forth to organize a mother daughter book club in our small south Texas community. The book gave us ideas on how to start and form the club which we are in the process of doing and having our first meeting next week. With this book in my arms I am ready. Thanks Shireen for such a wonderful gift that you have shared with us

More than one male-bonding episode has turned on the agony of razor burn, caused by a coarse beard and an imperfect shave. Thus the need for A Closer Shave, a novelty book in a petite size that should fill a large void. According to the author, Wallace Pinfold, there has been no better time in history to get a really close shave--an excellent coincidence with the fact that the clean-shaven look is currently the in thing. The trick to a really close shave seems to lie in the temperature and quantity of the water. There's more, but it would be unfair to give the plot away. Pinfold, whose name suggests a character out of P.G. Wodehouse but whose bio hints at a career as an adventurer, also provides entertaining notes on shaving history, odd shaving inventions and conventions, and famous beards through the centuries. --Brenda Pittsley

    Book Description

There he is again, the hairy beast in the mirror!

Not every man in the world begins his day by removing the night's stubble from his jaw, but 93 percent of the male population thinks taming the monster is the first order of business every morning. Since man invented metal--shortly after he started walking upright--he has sought to scrape stubble from his face without skinning himself alive.

In A Closer Shave, Wallace Pinfold takes the reader on a multicultural, multicentury, and multifaceted tour of the human face as seen from the stainless steel railway of the razor. Through more than 200 photographs and illustrations, cartoons and wood blocks, paintings and advertisements, the story of the shave unfolds, from how to trim a moustache, use a brush, and banish foggy mirrors to famous beards and bald guys in history, to the obsession with shaved heads in professional sports.

This witty little book takes a fast, furious, and funny look at the history of getting a closer, smoother, easier shave--and proves in the process that the male capacity for preening and self-absorption should never be underestimated.

5 out of 5 stars Unique Piece Of Humor And History!.......2002-12-11

Here is reading entertainment at its best! A nifty examination of facial shaving of all types, with clever illustrations and photos, plus some of history's strangest beards, including the fellow with a beard that reached the floor. King Gillette plays a leading role, as might be expected.Includes a "March of Progress from 10,000 BC to the present!..A real treat for all!

4 out of 5 stars Nice to have.......1999-12-28

This book does not offer "tricks to a really close shave". However, it is both a nice present and a nice to have. Why? Did you know about the beard tax imposed by Peter the Great? Guess why J. Palmer was jailed in 1840. Ever seen Kojak shaving his head? Guess why Gilette invested $750 million in development and manufacturing of the first triple-bladed razor. That's why.

    Book Description

A beautifully designed, full-color photo-essay celebrating the intimate bond between some noted equestrians and the horses they own, ride, train-and love!Leading man Richard Gere fell for a girl on horseback. For actress Alfre Woodard and her daughter Mavis, the connection with horses is spiritual. Chevy Chase says his Icelandics "get very hairy during the winter, but then so do I." And Robert Redford, recalling his month-long ride down the old Outlaw Trail that Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid rode, says: "What I marvel at is how wild and free this land still can seem from the back of a horse." In People We Know, Horses They Love, we meet nearly thirty celebrity horse lovers, from Whoopi Goldberg and Christie Brinkley to the original horse whisperer, Buck Brannaman and bestselling author Tami Hoag, who's also an amateur international champion dressage rider. Gorgeous, full-color, never-seen-before photographs capture the majesty and grace of the animals, the beauty of the ranches and stables where they reside and intimate moments shared with their owners. Whether highlighting Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward on their ranch for special needs children, exploring Hilary Duff's passion for wild mustangs, hanging with Jeff Bridges on the set of Seabiscuit, or illuminating the interior lives of Maria Shriver, Morgan Freeman, and many others, People We Know, Horses They Love pays tribute to the special relationship between human and horse. A portion of the proceeds will be donated to the Pegasus Therapeutic Riding Program.

5 out of 5 stars Visually and documentary beautiful!.......2007-09-27

I have seen this book before and decided to get it for myself, so I can ponder over the different chapters, and personages at leisure. Filled with one surprise after another, the book delivers photos masterfully done, interwoven with stories of people we know that share a common bond... horses. It is a great gift for the horse lover or the person that likes to read about people in the world of celebrities. Again, I must emphasize that the pictures are truly stunning and well composed. Having been a photographer for over 40 years, I always pay more attention to the details, composures, and art-full feel of pictures, and these photos are charming and "story telling" in their own light. One picture is worth a thousand words, is very true in this book. Buy it, enjoy it, keep it and give it.

3 out of 5 stars Cute book for the kids and celebrity followers.......2007-06-10

This book has some really well taken photography shots of people and their horses. It dosen't lie in its title...alas..the title is incredibly accurate...it shows a bunch of celebrity with their horses and a few with the dogs also.

Did I say the photography was wonderful?...It is.

The choice of the persons included in this book was well thought out..as she included several minority persons for which I give high marks for doing so..as minorities are very poorly represented in most equine books.

The horse crazy among us..(like Myself) will devour this book in less than 30 minutes if you read it..and even faster than that (maybe) if you just look at the pictures. Teens..young adults...minority horse lovers should jump on it...because it contains people that you have seen ..that could be you or your kids in it..and for that reason..it is excellent for the younger crowd too !!!

It isn't smart..or difficult..or magical...or knowledgable......its a good look at American Celebritys the horses they own..and how they got connected to them.

2 out of 5 stars Not Enough Horse, Too Much Hype.......2005-06-24

Where should I start? With the many blurry, grainy photos? Or the photos of celebrities and horses that are hugely under exposed so the "background" can come shining through? I thought I'd get to see celebrities with their horses - in focus. Disappointing photography.

The interviews sound somewhat "canned" and "redundant". As though the celebrities were asked to fill in a form and then the interview was written from the form.

Why two stars? Page 1, Richard Gere and his horse; Page 13 Robert Duvall and horse; Page 89 Kim Novak and her horse.

3 out of 5 stars People Magazine in hardcover with lots of horses.......2005-03-26

This oversize book with photographs by Linda Solomon is exactly as advertised by the title. We see photo-montages of stars like Robert Redford with his favorite horses. The text burbles on about his screen credits and career and the Sundance film festival. Robert Redford talks about his (horseless) childhood and why and how he learned to ride. The other stars that Rappaport and Wilkinson interview and photograph are Gisele Bundchen (super model from Brazil), Chevy Chase, Robert Duvall, Richard Gere (who raises Appaloosas), Melissa Gilbert and Bruce Boxleitner, Whoopi Goldberg (who currently doesn't own any horses, so was photographed with NYC's finest mounted police), Kelse and Camille Grammer, Joe and Billie Perry (Friesians), Katharine Ross and Cleo Elliott, Jane Seymour (who prefers driving to riding), Maria Shriver, Robert Wagner and Jill St. John, Jeff Bridges, Christie Brinkley, William Devane, Morgan Freeman, Kim Novak, Jack Palance, and Dennis Quaid.

The book has two other, shorter sections titled "Pro and Show" and "Healing Hands, Healing Horses." My favorite interview was with ex-jockey Julie Krone. What a gutsy, determined athelete! There are also short articles on the U. S. Equestrian Team, Dressage, and horse healer Buck Brannaman.

"People We Know, Horses They Love" is a pleasant hodge-podge. I would recommend it to star-struck teenagers who also happen to love horses.

4 out of 5 stars Great book for fans of horses and movie stars.......2004-12-27

I've been a horse lover since I got my first pony at the age of six. I am also a working entertainment reporter, so I am always on the lookout to talk to celebs who have horses -- but this book taught even me a few things! Who knew Chevy Chase has Icelandics? That's my favorite breed!

People We Know, Horses They Love is not only very well-written and informative, but the pictures are beautiful too. The only reason I didn't give it five stars is because that rating for horse/picture books is reserved for Robert Vavra :)

      Book Description

One of the hottest markets today for photography collecting and genealogical research focuses on the black experience, and this new publication helps to make this easier and more rewarding. Introduction to African American Photographs, 1840-1950 is the first book ever published to focus exclusively on the identification, research, care and collecting of vintage African American photographs and it is among the first with a frequently updated Online Price/Collectors Guide.

Spanning from photography's beginnings with the daguerreotype of the early 1840s through the gelatin silver prints of the1950s (see the Table of Contents for details), each major photographic format that has recorded African Americans, both free and slave, is presented to provide readers with the tools needed to accurately date black images. Kelbaugh provides useful resources for investigating the people in photographs and numerous "In Focus" case studies are included which use actual photographs as models for conducting photography research. Helpful advice is also included concerning the proper care needed for each type of photograph as well.

For collectors, valuable tips are given that will help them judge the collectibility and value of images. Book buyers are also provided access to the author's exclusive Online Price/Collectors Guide of prices that have actually been paid for black photographs for more than three years at auctions, shows and sales. This Price/Collectors Guide also includes special "Insider Information" that explains why certain images are so valuable along with additional content, such as info about fakes and reproductions, that gives collectors an extra collecting edge.

Written by Ross J. Kelbaugh, a noted photography historian and longtime photo-collector, many of the more than 120 historic photographs are from the author's personal collection and are published here for the first time. An extensive annotated bibliography of reference books and other helpful resources for conservation materials, internet research databases, photography auctions, and public collections is also included. Detailed instructions are also provided for conducting research into the lives of African American soldiers and civilians using the resources of the National Archives and the internet. All in all, the small price for this book could make you big money or help you better understand the value and importance of the priceless family photographs you already own.

4 out of 5 stars good if you're absolutely clueless.......2007-07-17

because this book has pictures, you can see the "how-to"s of taking care of a baby, such as how to diaper, bathe, feed, nurse, change clothes, etc...

however, i was disappointed with the lack of updates. i got the book because i borrowed a friend who had an earlier addition, and you'd think that after 10+ years, the spelling mistakes would be corrected, and that makes me wonder how often the book is "updated."

5 out of 5 stars Great book, a must have for any new parents........2007-06-16

We first checked this book out from our local library. We fell in love with it and just had to buy a copy for ourselves. It's a great book that contains a lot us useful real-life illustrations. We're first time parents and had so many questions about basic child-care. It helped answer some of the most simple questions to keep the baby clean, safe, and healthy. Now if only there was a manual on adulthood?!

5 out of 5 stars Best Book for First Time Parents.......2007-04-26

This book is wonderful, the pictures are great and it covers so many differnt topics. From diaper changing, burping, colic, to first aid for your baby (both newborn and older).
I would recommend it to any first time parents.

4 out of 5 stars Must have book for first-time parents.......2006-08-17

This is an indispensible book to me and my husband, giving guidance throughout pregnancy, to handling those first timid days at home, to caring for boo-boos of our energetic toddler. It covers a wide range of topics, with helpful pictures, and simple instructions. You MUST get your hands on this book if you are a first-time parent!

      4 out of 5 stars A Great Book for First-Time Parents.......2003-04-05

This is one of many pregnancy and baby books I have bought, and it's definitely one of my favorites. My husband and I are going to start trying to have a baby (our first) in about 5 months, so I'm reading all I possibly can right now. I've never been around infants, and I know absolutely nothing about how to take care of them. (I know- it's a scary thought me wanting to have one!!!) But this book has given me a lot of confidence, mainly because it's so detailed.
My favorite part of the book is the section on baby care- detailed steps of how to change a diaper, how to bathe the baby, how to dress the baby, etc. with very helpful (and beautiful) pictures. The section on pregnancy actually isn't very helpful- not very many details about the developing baby or changes in the mother; but it does give a basic overview and again, the pictures are beautiful. However, it does contain an excellent section on nutrition- spelling out (and showing) exactly what foods have what necessary nutrients for the pregnant woman, which I found very helpful. There's also a section on what to expect at each prenatal doctor's visit, which is very interesting.
All in all, this is a wonderful book with lots of good information and adorable pictures. If this isn't going to be your first baby, I don't think this book will be very helpful to you because you obviously know first-hand how to care for a baby already! However, it might be a good book for older siblings to look at (maybe age 10 and over)- so they can know what changes to expect and how they can help with the new baby. (There are pictures of the mother's naked body as it changes each month and of how to use a breast pump, so use discretion.) If you are expecting your first (or planning to be expecting soon, like me!!!) this book will be very helpful in teaching you the basics of caring for your baby.
P.S. My husband hasn't read any of my pregnancy/baby books, but he too liked the pictures in this one.
