Book Description

How many times have you noticed that a pregnant woman has a "special glow," or how a friend, having just fallen in love, is "beaming"? That's the aura radiating in a full and positive way! If you've ever noticed that some days feel better than others, or have felt someone staring at you behind your back, you've experienced your own aura in action.

Auras hold the secret to what kinds of energy we pull to ourselves. The key thoughts and emotions we convey through our auras send messages to the universe, and the universe responds in kind. When we are afraid, we attract fear; when we are loving, we attract love; when we feel successful, we attract success. The auric field can do all this and more because it provides us with an interactive membrane between our physical bodies and the energetic fields that support all material things.

Refreshing to read a well written, info packed book on the aura. For too long we have been subjected to abstruce explanations and theories about the aura. Here at last is a readable, informative and practical book that you can use immediately to effect changes in your life.
Most important of all, the exercises work. You can create the inner landscape that produces impressive changes in your life.

This book is great for those who may be new to auras and/or new age thought, and also for those who have a bit of knowledge as well. It gives fantastic excercises about clearing the "stuff" out of your aura and attracting the good to you. It's also written in plain English so that those who may not be familiar with the concept of an aura can pick it up quickly. I rarely write reviews, so this book HAD to be good to inspire me to tell others to get it.

5 out of 5 stars Aura Advantage teaches the spirit how to glow to its fullest.......2005-02-24

I have read Cynthia Sue Larson's AURA ADVANTAGE more than once. The first time I breezed through it, and the other times, I took my time to really get into the power behind her writings. This "power" is not a magical incantation that conjures up demons from the deep. No, it is the power that is in everyone of us. However, as Ms. Larson points out in her book Aura Advantage, we have to allow ourselves the freedom to recognize our own abilities and to utilize them. I've learned by developing the power of my own aura we can achieve practically anything that we desire. As she so brilliantly explains we can use our aura to maintain good health, achieve personal wealth, protect us when in harms way, and even create a parking space "in front of the door" when the lot is full.

As Ms. Larson points out we are only limited by the limits we place upon ourselves. All I know, I can never keep my copy on the coffee table very long, before I have to use my detective powers that I learned from reading Aura Advantage to track down the culprit that "borrowed" my book.

I look forward to reading any other writings of Cynthia Sue Larson...pardon me, I have to again, go track down my copy of Aura Advantage.

Book Description

Following World War II, China found itself struggling with a conversion to communism that had wreaked havoc on the nation's economy, causing a devastating famine and extreme economic depression. In 1966 China's leader, Mao Zedong, gave his support to radicals within the communist party who envisioned a revolutionary social upheaval that would destroy all traces of the reactionary past. This was the beginning of a ten-year period of violence and chaos known as the Cultural Revolution. Many top officials lost their positions and numerous provincial governments came under the control of the radicals. The radical movement was primarily led by students who formed organizations known as "Red Guards," which used violent methods to punish people they saw as "anti-Maoists" or counter-revolutionaries. At the height of the Cultural Revolution (1966-70) China's universities were closed and much of its populace was sent to rural "re-education centres" where they were indoctrinated with Maoist policies. It is during this period that Li Zhensheng worked as a photojournalist for the "Heilongjiang Daily", shooting film both for the paper and, as we know now, for himself. While Li worked for a newspaper supporting the Maoist movement and admits he did not think Mao's policies to be incorrect at the beginning of his tenure at the newspaper, his hiding of film was a highly subversive action. As a photographer, Li wanted to document the Cultural Revolution for himself and for others in the future. He put himself at risk by hiding film stills that the government would have destroyed, capturing events of which little or no other visual record exists. Looking at the photos in this book, one sees the difference between the photos published in the "Daily" and those Li hid for himself, allowing for a rare understanding of how the Chinese government controlled media during the Cultural Revolution. The Heilongjiang province where Li worked was crucial because of its proximity to the then Soviet Union. Its main city, Harbin, had been occupied by the Soviets following World War II and was later set up as a communication hub between the Soviet Union and China. It was the communist centre which bred the revolutionary movement, leading to China's unification under communist control in 1949. This Russian influence can be seen in the details of Li's photographs, right down to the city's typically Russian-style architecture. Many of Li's techniques as a photographer borrow from his training as a filmmaker, including his creation of "handheld panoramic" photos by shooting overlapping frames of large panoramas and pasting the stills together to create the illusion of one continuous shot. His inventive techniques and powerful images make Li one of the premier Chinese photographers alive today. This book, which takes its name from the literal translation of Li's accreditation as a photographer approved by the Communist Party headquarters in ! Beijing, is part of the key to understanding one of the most turbulent and still notorious eras of modern history. The book includes a preface, introduction, text by the photographer, chronology, maps, and extensive photo captions for over 400 photos (almost all of which have never been seen before).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars It reveals that horrible human nature of both individual and masses.......2006-12-28

Li's photos captured the extreme madness of hundreds of thousands people in China during that so-called Cultural Revolution and it reveals the very dark side of human nature as seen from, for instance, that young woman cheerfully recorded the place, date and time when she saw Mao going by in his jeep, the humiliating punishment of all sorts of people such as Communist Party Provincial secretaries or provincial governors, newspaper workers, peasants, or whoever in huge mass demonstration against so-called "Anti-Revolutionary Reactionaries" to different Red Guard factions infightings they reminded me how Hitler got into power, how Japanese militarism got in total control in Japan in its war efforts, and, believe it or not, how George W. Bush & Co. got "elected" into the White House, they all show that similar built-in weakness of human characteristics- or the human genes! This book tells a lot about all of us. The monolithic political power, century's religious indoctrination are at work around clock and real enlightening secular education around the world is probably struggling in a losing battle. A good book of historical documents.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful.......2004-06-11

This isn't just a history book laced with photos; this is also a personal view on the Cultural Revolution from the photographer's point of view. Informative and emotional at the same time. Wonderful.

4 out of 5 stars The Many Faces of the Cultural Revolution.......2004-03-22

For those of us fascinated and puzzled over the cultural revolution in China, here are photos to bring to life what we've been reading. There are many faces to study. This document seems curiously objective even though the author has his own story to tell of being treated unfairly. I would not describe the photos as shocking to those who have studied these events in China's history. This is a great companion to any other narrative one might be studying on the subject. Also, the author is a remarkable person. This is another work on the cultural revolution where I come away feeling gratitude toward the author. Li Zhensheng has a more benign story in comparison with some other personal accounts that were part of my introduction to this subject. I enjoy this additional perspective. There is much to see here.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2004-03-14

For those readers whose knowledge of the Great Leap Forward and the Cultural Revolution is limited to film, here is a document that shows that some of the films that portray these scenes were not exaggerated. These photographs do much more work than most documentary photographs. There is something uncannily immediate about them, as though the events depicted happened only yesterday; sometimes it is as though they were still happening. The text that accompanies the photographs follows the story of the photographer and his work through these years, and is interesting and well written. I came away from this book with the feeling of horror at fascism that I have never felt before. This book communicates something original and timeless about the human condition that I believe is priceless and rare. If you can't afford this book, you should seek it out at a bookstore and read it.

4 out of 5 stars A shocking look at a remarkable period.......2003-12-22

Although the photographs are the main focus of this book, the accompanying text is also illuminating as an individual's account of his experiences of the Cultural Revolution. The text has, of course, been written with the benefit of hindsight - and one gets a sense of retrospective self-justification coming in. The passion that the period inspired amongst the younger generation is also evident, however.

The photographs are, of course, contemporary accounts of the living through that period, and consequently have the power to shock significantly. The "struggle session" photographs of senior party leaders undergoing "self-criticism" are particularly horrific. The concluding photographs of a "victor" of the Cultural Revolution on her way to her execution after the restoration of a more normal society also have a big impact - though curiously there is a sense of the pathetic about the woman that Li captures.

The photography merits a 5 star rating, the text probably a three. The images are a valuable insight into the strength of emotion in that remarkable period.

Book Description

"At least a dozen of Helen Levitt's photographs seem to me as beautiful, perceptive, satisfying, and enduring as any lyrical work that I know. In their general quality and coherence, moreover, the photographs as a whole body, as a book, seem to me to combine into a unified view of the world, an uninsistent but irrefutable manifesto of a way of seeing, and in a gently and wholly unpretentious way, a major poetic work." (James Agee) World-renowned for her iconic black-and-white street photographs, New York City's visual poet laureate Helen Levitt also possesses a little-known archive of color work, which has been collected for the first time in Slide Show, her third powerHouse Books monograph. In 1959, and again in 1960, Helen Levitt received grants from the Guggenheim Foundation to photograph in color on the streets of New York, where she had photographed two decades earlier in black-and-white. But tragically, the best of these pioneering color pictures were stolen from her apartment in 1970 and she had to start over again. In 1974 the new work was shown as a continuous slide projection at New York's Museum of Modern Art—an early example of a slide show presentation by a museum and one of the first exhibitions of serious color photography anywhere in the world. Slide Show presents more than one hundred photographs—including eight surviving images from the 1959-60 series—more than half of which have never been exhibited or published before. This impressive monograph is a worthy successor to her magnum opus, Crosstown (powerHouse, 2001), which included the largest collection of her color pictures to date, and to her more intimate volume of black-and-white work, Here and There (powerHouse, 2004), which presented more than eighty "unknown" Levitts taken over six decades.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing Printing.......2006-12-31

I'm a big fan of Helen Levitt's work & I would love to give this book a 5 star review. Unfortunately her excellent photography is not presented well due to a poor print job. It seems that something went wrong in the scanning or pre press phase. All the photos are too light & the colours are washed out. This is not how Kodachrome should look. Some of the same images are printed in the German book titled 'Helen Levitt' & the difference is significant. The photos in the German book are much more accurate. Unfortunately this publication is no longer in print & hard to come by.

I already knew that this book 'Slide Show' had poor reproductions as I had a chance to view a copy in the library. I bought it anyway because it is the only way to see some of her photos. I can't think what went wrong as Powerhouse seems to be a quality publisher & I own other photography books by them where the printing is fine.

5 out of 5 stars The least glamorous photos of New York you are ever likely to see.......2006-11-07

The photos in this collection portray working people and poor people, people who are poorly dressed, people without air conditioning on hot summer days, people with ugly pets. The collection is oddly timeless; many photographs of New York can be dated to within a few years by looking at store awnings and, clothing styles, and haircuts, but not these. The people whom Levitt photographed are wearing clothing that was shapeless, ugly, and impossible to date in 1960, 1970, or 1980. With the exception of a couple of photos that show movie theater marquees in the background, nothing here can be dated.

The photos are all the more remarkable because they flatter nobody. Did people give permission to be photographed, knowing how they would look? Had they given up long ago?

Some of the photos give their subjects dignity, but not all. The book is sometimes cruel, sometimes funny.

As an aside, I'd love to know where these photos were taken. Some look like East Harlem, but not a single photo shows a street sign, and I can't identify any of the stores.

5 out of 5 stars America's Greatest Woman Photographer.......2006-05-08

This collection of Helen Levitt's brilliant color photographs is a treasure. I grew up in the city, and looking through this book, I was immediately transported back to the sights, smells, sounds and feelings of my childhood. These sensitive street scenes are wonderful social documents and pure poetry.

A great book for anyone wanting to know exactly what Kirlian Photography is and how to perform experiments with Kirlian Photography. Many photographs, history, theory and speculation about auras and bioenergy fields. Some of the information is hard to believe at first, but few other books yield such clear easy-to-understand answers.

Book Description

The aura was described in early esoteric writings and later in those of the Rosicrucians, Zen Buddhists, Christian mystics - even in the oral traditions of the American Indians. Now, Capturing the Aura brings the science, technology and metaphysics of auric investigation into a concise and readable book for the 21st century - a century that will see continuing integration of science and metaphysics into the MetaScience of the future.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars argh........2005-02-22

Fortunately, this book was a gift and so I didn't waste any money on it, but I found it an amusing romp through a bunch of flimsy psuedo-science. Some people have no shame, really. The concept of auras has been so thoroughly debunked that it's unbelievable that this book could be published in the 21st century. If you like non-fiction, as I do, I would recommend you avoid this book and instead read about the "magical" Northern Lights, the unbelievable migration of birds, the incredible social complexity of insects, the heavenly surprises discovered by science, or the mind-expanding beauty of the Grand Canyon. Otherwise, you might as well just read fiction.

5 out of 5 stars Mapping the Human Aura.......2002-01-31

Contributing author Julia Melges Jablonski writes in CAPTURING THE AURA, "Traditional science typically stands at the edge of the known world and tries to move into new territory using 'maps' of the already-conquered territory as guides. This scientific approach tends to blind them to the potential scope of the vast unknown territory ahead. Non-traditional researchers, inventors, and thinkers, on the other hand, tend to use a 'plane' to fly into the wilderness and then work their way back, and in the process, they create the maps for the less daring to follow after them."

Our knowledge of the human aura, subtle energy bodies, nadis, chakras, and acupuncture meridians has historically resided primarily with those guides we entrust to inform us: energy healers, shamans, lightworkers, mystics, priests, and others. Only in relatively recent years has modern-day technology allowed everyday people to begin to view the aura in much the same way that these spiritual masters have been seeing it for years. CAPTURING THE AURA describes a variety of imaging techniques, such as kirlian photography, full-body imaging, and interactive imaging, as well as providing useful information about auric sight, breath techniques, qi, and the emotions that accompany various auric colors.

What I love most about CAPTURING THE AURA is the way the contributing authors each share their own areas of experience after they've "flown their planes into the wilderness and worked their way back" -- thereby providing readers with invaluable maps we can put together into a bigger picture. This book contains one of the best compilations of modern-day knowledge concerning seeing and understanding the human aura with contributions from: C.E. Lindgren, Blythe Arakawa, Jacques Beauchamp, Robert Bruce, Fritjof Capra, Guy Coggins, Ruby K. Corder, Janice Dye, Gerald Owen Grow, Arnold Keyserling, Ralph Losey, William T. McClellan, Rosalee Elizabeth McCurdy, Susana Madden, Andrine Morse, Buryl Payne, Margo von Phul, Chip Weston, and Richard Bernard Wigley.

5 out of 5 stars "Capturing the Aura", a work of art........2000-09-07

Bravo! This book is perhaps the most important work on auras to date. The book contains the works of leading scientists, educators, and psi researchers. According to the book's introduction: "You are not alone... As you will see, perhaps feel, through this book, many people (i.e. scientists, inventors, scholars, and lay individuals) already spend considerable time exploring consciousness through different avenues. Using skills, talents, and innovative technology, these dedicated "searchers" explore the correlation between personal and collective consciousness and diverse phenomena such as quantum physics, wormholes, multi-dimensions, chakra sounds, electronics, and metaphysics. Often, initially motivated by curiosity, these individuals soon turn their avocations into lifelong passions. At a time in history when the world is overshadowed by wars, natural disasters, and uncertainty, the sun continues shining for everyone who dares go beyond the visual linearity of mundane situations and accepts the potentiality that Creation is motivated by Love and a supreme universal intelligence. This intelligence is part of mankind, as mankind is a part of the God energy and auric fields of the Cosmos. This work offers an opportunity for the reader to become a part of something bigger and more perfect than he/she could ever imagine - a world, a dimension, and universe intermingled with energy fields, magnetic forces, and unimaginable electromagnetic vibrations of light and sound. Capturing the Aura will introduce you into a new Era where humans are invited to use their creativity, love, passion, and mental ability constructively in making a better world from themselves and humanity as a whole. Let us, therefore, keep an open mind and heart in sharing a vision of a better potentiality. A potentiality which we each must activate through the reading of our Cosmic blueprint - life itself.

Poor poor and did I mention this book was poorly written? Never ceases to amaze me how certain new age flim flamers decide to make science prove certain things such as auras...science cant even prove relativity how could it prove auras? Im not saying Auras dont exist...Im just saying they cant be captured by a camera lens. Give me a break, anyone who has ever studied photography will know the lens is not some 4th-5th dimensional viewing that sees into the spiritual realm...if that was the case each picture we took would be full of guides and angels and devas and auras of trees and people....yet you go to these "aura camera" and they put you in a lower lit area...almost with a black tint or shade and they take you picture and out comes you with an aura...Con job and that pretty much sums the content of this book. Dont bother buying it unless you are masochistic.

Book Description

Originally published in 1979, Cape Light became an instant classic and one of the most influential photography books published in the latter part of the 20th century. Common scenestiny figures on a beach, a porch railing against a storm-darkened sky, a blue raft against a summer cottageall are transformed by the poignant light of the Cape and the photographers subtle and luminous vision. This exquisitely printed book captures every nuance of color and light in that unique juncture of sky, sea, and land that is Cape Cod.

5 out of 5 stars this is it!.......2003-01-09

I first saw this book while i was looking through the photography section at the University of Guelph library. This book probably influenced my photography more than any other. Unfortunately, it also made me start doing shots with my nikon that are better suited for a large format system. The introductory interview with the photographer is possibly the most interesting discussion on the topic of light and photography. If you plan to become anything more than an amature photographer, PLEASE get this book NOW.

5 out of 5 stars Takes your photographic breath away.......2002-03-04

Ansel Adams said that this book was his favorite book of color photographs (the reason I bought it, long ago). Meyerowitz's use of little contrast, incomparible colors, and unusual subject matter makes this a must MEMORIZE book for all serious photographers. If you don't go nuts over his photographs, you don't like photography as much as you thought you did.......

    Book Description

With more than a million visitors a year, Nantucket is a famed getaway, but only a few natives can attest to its mystic beauty in the fall and winter months. Among them is Cary Hazlegrove, whose Nantucket: The Quiet Season is the stunning follow-up to her celebrated Nantucket: Seasons on the Island. With Hazlegrove's signature photographs and evocative quotes from residents, this book captures what tourists rarely see: the island's hushed off-season life. Holiday hearths and cheery shopfronts provide warm refuge from chilly bogs and snow-blanketed dunes, revealing an island winter wonderland. With over one hundred images and a foreword by best-selling author Nathaniel Philbrick, Nantucket: The Quiet Season offers a unique view of the island, allowing all to enjoy its multifaceted charm year-round.

    4 out of 5 stars Well done!.......2006-11-03

As a professional photographer and writer, there are a select few who fit the bill of "really great" for me. In this case, there are three photos in this book that make the whole book more than worth while having. Maybe a little heavy on the Christmas photos, but in all a very sensitive and introspective look at one of my favorite islands.

5 out of 5 stars Another great book from Cary.......2006-09-04

Cary's pictures are always great, I have several of her books. I generally ignore the text as it can detract from the pictures at times. Cary - don't feel like you need someone's quotes....your pictures stand alone!!

5 out of 5 stars A Beautiful Souvenir of a Fall Day in New England.......2003-10-12

This is a book for people who love the fall season in New England. New Hampshire photographers Jerry and Marcy Monkman have masterfully used their cameras to capture the beauty of autumn in this region of the country in their book THE COLORS OF FALL. The two are authors of Appalachian Trail guides to the White Mountains of New Hampshire and Arcadia National Park (as a matter of fact, they love Arcadia National park so much, the even named their first child Arcadia). Their knowledge and love of the area is evident in the photos presented in the book. Some of the shots are of familiar places, others are less well known. Many of the photographs contained in this book are grand scenic shots of the mountains in New Hampshire, Maine, and Vermont, or the raging rivers in New Hampshire. Yet they also include close ups of smaller detailed subjects that are often ignored when we make foliage trips. Many of these shots demonstrate the Monkmans mastery of the camera.

Those who have not had the opportunity to visit New England in the fall can take a vicarious trip with this book. For those of us who live in New England, the book gives us the opportunity to appreciate the beauty of this place we call home.
