Book Description
A ROADMAP FOR IMPLEMENTING THE ATSC DATA BROADCAST STANDARD The ATSC Data Broadcast Standard provides the means to transform digital TV signals from plain vanilla audio/video to 57-flavor broadband digital data delivery, opening a universe of device and service possibilities. Authored by four of the standard’s lead writers -- Richard Chernock, Regis Crinon, Michael Dolan, and John R. Mick, Jr. -- Data Broadcasting is the first guide to the new ATSC standard.
These experts help you:
*Understand the concepts behind standard provisions for carrying any type of data over MPEG-2 data transport mechanisms
*Implement the standard in real-world service creation and rollouts
*Enable a new generation of set-top boxes, hand-held devices, and PC add-in cards for handling both data and streaming video
*Configure stand-alone data injection and data injection associated with video and audio programs
*Define the optimal transmittal method for any type of data
*Resolve system architecture, receiver-reference design, data categorization, and encapsulation questions
*Solve announcement, and discovery and binding mechanisms problems
*Avoid implementation pitfalls with encapsulation examples, illustrated layering, and buffer models
Customer Reviews:
A great MPEG Systems reference too.......2002-03-28
I found this book to be a great resource for the engineering and design fundamentals that relate to the question "how is all that data formatted and organized in digital television broadcasting?" The MPEG-2 Systems Standard is one of the foundations of digital television. If you're interested in how MPEG-2 really works at the system level, you'll find this book an excellent resource. The chapter on MPEG Transport by itself is worth the price of the book, but it also does a great job explaining another arcane MPEG-2 Standard, Digital Storage Media Command and Control (DSM-CC). It turns out DSM-CC is very useful in data broadcasting, but if you were to pick up the IEC standard itself and try to make sense of it, you'd find it very challenging.
Even though broadcasters have not started transmitting data along with digital television, this book sets the framework for understanding how it will be done. It's written by those experts in the field who actually designed the standard, so you know the information is accurate.
Great work.......2002-02-28
I highly recommend this book to all those who develop or maintain data broadcasting systems.
The good point is that it is not at all a replication of the specification (though a true copy of the A/90 spec is added as an appendix). The concepts are clear, progressive and sufficiently illustrated.
Chapter 3 alone tells you most you need to know about MPEG-2 Systems standard. I gained extra insight from it even after I had studied the original 13818-1 spec.
The Definitive Work.......2001-10-31
This book, written by several of data broadcast specification authors, is The Definitive Work on the ATSC Data Broadcast specification.
If you are an implementer of data broadcasting, you need exactly two things: a copy of the specification and a copy of this book.

Customer Reviews:
Beware.......2003-01-11
This book claims to be Video and Audio...the audio part is ca. 20 pages out of 300, is horribly outdated, and is not technical enough to explain psychoacoustic principles involved..it is generally substandard. The video parts also neglect the 'reasons' for various techiniques. The book serves as a compendium of techniques without providing underpinnings.
A beautiful quote 'Mpeg 3 was dropped ... etc' Only if you have the limited point of view of this book....it should called 'Video with Audio' not 'Video and Audio'. There is a BIG difference.
In many respects, DVD Demystified provides more useful figures and information.
Not recommended.
digital video compression.......2000-01-27
This book looks pretty good one. My research concern with this field
The Last Word.......1999-11-28
The final word in digital compression. Especially good for readers in Japan.
Way way in depth.......1999-06-24
This book tells more than you'll ever want to know about digital video compression. It's a great book for engineers who really want to get the theory.
Excellent.......1999-01-21
Still the most comprehensive, up-to-date and readable review of this important subject.

largely copied from "the art of digital audio".......1997-09-27
This short, simple book is a decent introduction to the subject. But, it is largely copied from his earlier book "The Art of Digital Audio." I think the amazon.com claim of 256 pages may be incorrect. I only count 176.

good intro.......2000-05-16
gives a good intro to basic foundations of algo's behind MPEG. Just enough material to give beginners a good handle on important topics such as (i)DCT, etc
Good overview of MPEG-2, but lacks technical depth.......2000-01-17
The books provides a reasonable overview of technical principles associated with MPEG-2, but it lacks technical depth. The treatment of audio compressions (an essential component of MPEG) is very terse.
Book Description
A complete professional `bible' on all aspects of audio and video compression using MPEG technology. The MPEG Handbook is both a theoretical and practical treatment of the subject. Fundamental knowledge is provided alongside practical guidance eg how to avoid quality loss or the creation of MPEG elementary streams and their multiplexing into transport streams (including the problems involved in synchronizing all of the signals in a multiplex). The clarity of explanation and depth of technical detail combine to make this book an essential and definitive reference work. Gives a comprehensive treatment of significant extensions made available by MPEG4, such as object coding, mesh coding and animation.
Previously titled MPEG2, the book has now been extensively revised to cover the all the latest standards, including a description of the MPEG4 standard and the latest applications of the technology, such as the delivery of compressed audio, video, graphics and interactive capability over the internet and broadband networks. It gives a comprehensive treatment of significant extensions made available by MPEG4, such as object coding, mesh coding and animation.
John Watkinson is an international consultant in audio, video and data recording. He is a Fellow of the AES, a member of the British Computer Society and a chartered information systems practitioner. He presents lectures, seminars, conference papers and training courses worldwide. He is the author of many other Focal Press books, including: the Kraszna-Krausz award winning MPEG-2; The Art of Digital Audio; An Introduction to Digital Video; The Art of Sound Reproduction; An Introduction to Digital Audio; TV Fundamentals and Audio for Television. He is also co-author, with Francis Rumsey, of The Digital Interface Handbook, and contributor to the Loudspeaker and Headphone Handbook, 3rd edition.
*Understand the principles of MPEG technology
*Keep up to date with the main and latest standards - MPEG1, MPEG2 and MPEG4
*Shows how MPEG technology can be applied for the best results
Download Description
A fully revised and updated version of the popular professional "bible" on all aspects of audio and video compression using MPEG technology. The MPEG Handbook is both a theoretical and practical treatment of the compete family of standards, including MPEG-1, MPEG-2, MPEG-4 (revised to include MPEG 4 Part 10). After reading this book, engineers will have a complete understanding of latest applications of the technology, such as the delivery of compressed audio, video, graphics and interactive capability over the internet and broadband networks.
Customer Reviews:
Good for introduction of concepts and nomenclature .but ...........2005-02-03
The last 1/3 of the book serves as a good introduction to MPEG. All of the concepts and terminology definitions, can be found on the web, but it will take you days to find it all. This book is good if you want to save time looking thru useless web pages that may or may not be correct.
Worth the money? Depends on how valuable your time is.
The first 2/3's is mostly academic principles of sampling/transforms/compression. Engineering text book stuff.
Also, the book is very rough around the edges. Looks like a collection of stuff from different sources. The book jumps all over the place, and leaves things open ended at times.
Builds on scientific principles, includes audio.......2003-12-25
Many video compression books start with a particular specification and then provide background to justify the decisions made in defining the specification. This book approaches video compression starting from scientific principles and building on those towards describing the decisions made in digital compression standards. It describes the history of common analog video formats and proceeds to a solid overview of the MPEG-1, MPEG-2, and MPEG-4 digital video compression formats.
Many video compression books completely disregard or gloss over audio. This one includes audio compression with the same complete treatment given to video. The book covers MPEG layer 1-3 audio, MPEG-2 and MPEG-4 AAC, and Dolby AC-3.
This book is complete, has no obvious typos, is logically organized, and contains many useful diagrams.
Disappointing coverage of key topics.......2002-02-27
This book covers a broad range of topics, some relevant to video and audio coding, some not (e.g. digital filters, Fourier transform, phase locked loop !). Key topics such as motion estimation and compensation are not clearly described. The information on the MPEG standards is disappointing, by my reckoning less than 1/3 of the book actually deals with MPEG. There is no mention of MP4 profiles/levels or MP4 systems.
