Book Description
Sleek, stealthy, powerful, and beautiful, the tiger has always evoked awe, fear, and utter fascination. Once undisputed lord of vast stretches of Asia, India, and Indonesia, the tiger now stalks a sadly diminished realm, despite the best efforts of dedicated conservationists all over the world. Some strains are extinct; all are threatened. But, as this dramatic volume demonstrates, the species has lost none of its mesmerizing appeal.
Glorying in more than 100 stunning full-color photographs, The Year of the Tiger combines the talents of two gifted, knowledgeable men: National Geographic veteran Michael "Nick" Nichols, who has been described as the Indiana Jones of photography, and writer Geoffrey Ward, a tiger admirer ever since his youth in India. Together, they have created an engrossing, unforgettable portrait of this magnificent creature, featuring many images of tigers in the wild never before captured on film.
Here are arresting visions from Southeast Asia and Siberia, along with remarkable and unprecedented photographs that reveal the hidden life of an Indian tigress, named Sita, and her cubs. Over a period of two years, Nichols visited the tigers, documenting Sita's unflagging efforts to feed and safeguard her young. To obtain his extraordinary shots, Nichols tracked the tigers on elephant-back through rough terrain and more than once risked his life to bring back a unique record of their lives.
Here too is a gallery of tigers in captivity, heartbreaking in its juxtaposition with their wild brethren. For whether they're entertaining Las Vegas crowds or living in the relative security of a first-rate zoo, these are animals who have lost -- or never learned -- the skills that would allow them to survive in the wild. And yet they too have inherited all the majesty and wonder that mark their breed -- and may perhaps be the last, best hope for the most endangered of today's great cats.
Stunning in its visual appeal, sobering in its message, The Year of the Tiger is at once a vivid celebration and a vital call to arms on behalf of a creature whose very existence is menaced by mankind's encroachment on its delicately-balanced environment. It's a book for anyone who cares about preserving our world's astonishing diversity, and for anyone who's fallen under the tiger's spell -- and that, it's safe to say, is everyone.
Customer Reviews:
Wonderful for Tiger lovers.......2000-05-03
This is a wonderful book for anyone who loves tigers. It is packed with spectacular photos of tigers, most in their natural environment. There are also some pictures of other wildlife & of native peoples.
There are pictures of tigers with their cubs, ready to pounce & many close-ups. Sadly, there are others of tigers in captivity. I loved the pictures of the white tigers especially a rare one with orange stripes instead of black.
If you can tear yourself away from the pictures the text is equally impressive. The author tells of his adventures in national parks throughout Asia.
He also discusses the plight of tigers & other animals of the area being killed for there furs or horns and what is being done to protect them. There is a list of conservationists in the back if you want to help.
Excellent.......2000-04-01
I thought that this book was remarkable in the explanation of the year of the tiger and with what cultures that it pertains to.

Customer Reviews:
A fast paced, fun read........2007-09-11
Paul Chavasse has had a long and distinguished career in British intelligence. He is literally on the eve of his retirement when two rather remarkable events occur in rapid succession. He is approached, in person, by none other than Prime Minister John Major who begs him to stay on. Then he receives an unexpected visit from a robed Buddhist monk who engages him in conversation about a harrowing adventure he had in Tibet over 30 years before.
The story of that remote adventure provides the bulk of the narrative to Year of the Tiger by Jack Higgins. Told in the third person though from Chavasse's point of view, this is a fast paced tale with plenty of action and a number of unexpected twists.
The year is 1962 and Chavasse is called upon to rescue an Albert Schweitzer like doctor who is under house arrest in Chinese occupied Tibet. Chavasse defies all the odds as he struggles to get the elderly humanitarian and his beautiful housekeeper across the border to the safety of Kashmir. Not only must he overcome the brutally harsh and thin aired Tibetan terrain, he must also outsmart the thoroughly malevolent Colonel Li and the soldiers in his command.
Though the plotting is rather far fetched, I found Year of the Tiger to be a pretty good action-adventure novel. A 4 star effort, recommended to readers who enjoy fast paced action with a few surprises along the way.
A veteran spook remembers ..........2002-01-16
A couple of days before his retirement, Paul Chavasse was approached by a Tibetan monk requesting information on an extremely classified operation he had carried out in 1962, smuggling a brilliant mathematician out of communist Chinese occupied Tibet.
As he recalled his adventure, readers would see Paul Chavasse, who had 3 years before successfully smuggled the Dalai Lama out of Tibet, return in order to extract a 70-year old sickly mathematician. His mission almost ended the moment it began, running into a group of Chinese soldiers and Russian journalist who happened to be passing by as he landed in the remote wilderness of Tibet. His mission was made even harder with the presence of a beautiful Russian house helper Katya in the home of the mathematician, and the relentless diabolically shrewd Colonel Li, commander of the regional Chinese garrison.
Betrayal, torture, deception met Chavasse at every turn. How was he going to return with a sickly geriatric over such long distances of inhospitable terrain at Himalayan altitudes ?
Readers may not get a treat of how harshly beautiful Tibet is, but there is no shortage of excitement as Chavasse fought to remain true to his mission. Unlike other books where the adversaries are depicted rather one-dimensionally, Colonel Li posed as a most worthy foe, Jack Higgins being able to portray him as having realistic mind of his own.
Taut and tense and a turn in every chapter!.......2001-05-16
Surprises in every chapter in this book! un-down-putable!
An update of a Higgins classic.......2000-05-24
This book is basically a rewrite of an earlier book by Higgins. it features one of his early heroes Paul Chavasse, a British agent. Paul has smuggled the Dalai Lama out of Tibet and must go back to get a Russian space scientist. I found the book very similar in tone to the Quiller series by Adam Hall. Excellent 60s style espionage tale.
Not the best........1998-01-16
You can read this if you are a fan of Higgins, a speed reader, or you just have nothing else to do, but I'd recommend you do something else with your time. I did lend it to a friend, however, who loved it. The plot and setting are adequate, but nothing too exciting.
Book Description
In 1969 Ole and Hannah Nydahl became the first Western students of H.H. the Karmapa, the head of the Kagyu tradition of Yogis in Tibetan Buddhism. After their years of practice in the Himalayas, he authorized them to teach and start centers in his name. They have continued this work ever since. Today, Hannah translates and organized for the main Lamas of the lineage, and Ole, himself a Lama, has now started over three hundred and fifty centers around the world.
Work in the West starts with an audience with the Queen of Denmark. A basement in historical Copenhagen becomes the first Tibetan Buddhist center on the European continent, and rusted-through VW-buses with race-car qualities get them everywhere. The Karmapa's visit to Denmark, in 1974, then opens up the world ...
Riding the Tiger is the inside story of the development of Tibetan Buddhism in the West. In his refreshingly unsentimental style, Lama Ole shows all aspects of the work. With breathtaking intensity, he highlights both healthy and unhealthy tendencies in the light of the Buddha's ultimate aim: To bring about the fully developed beings whose every activity blesses the world.
The book describes the starting of the first 100 centers all over the world, with many intriguing cross cultural adventurs and teachings along the way - from the spiritually hungry of Russia to bandits in South America and travels in North America with Karmapa and Kalu Rinpoche.
Customer Reviews:
A true treasure.......2003-03-11
I found this book really met a lot of questions which had formed over the years about lifestyle and the Buddhist view.
Lama Ole really presents joy and excitement with some rare glimpses of early interactions with the 16th Karmapa.
The freedom and acceptance of Kagyu Buddhism in non-judgement and fearless activity brings blessing to many around the world.
I am not suprised more and more that there are over 350 centers forming around the world. Id pick up this book any day, with the element that every part of it captures a unique and integral aspect of the development of Buddhism in the West. It is joy to read of Hannah and Ole Nydahl and their gift to bring lay buddhism to the West and in such a natural, unhindered way.
A MUST READ FOR ANYONE WHO ENJOYS LIFES TRAVELS
A Fine Dharma Travelogue!.......2000-08-02
Lama Ole Nydahl is a unique figure in modern Buddhist history -first Western student of the Black Hat lama, H.H. the XVIth Gyalwa Karmapa, married, lama 'without robes', and spiritual figure personally chosen by the Karmapa to teach and make foundations in his name- and 'Riding the Tiger' is filled to overflowing with his particular energies and gifts. It is a galloping book that takes the reader around the world, inviting him in for a close-up look at the making of a Buddhist center for meditation and study, and Lama Ole has successfully started over one hundred such centers. And a deep look, as well, at the nature of Buddhism in the West, how it has been transplanted, how it has flourished. With due respect to another of the reviews on this page, Lama Ole's defense of Diamond Way Buddhism and of the singular wishes of the XVIth Karmapa, and his willingness to discuss the schism that has taken place within the Kagyu tradition, with two reincarnations of the Karmapa presently recognized by two differing factions, is certainly not childish, nor does the conflict itself necessarily reflect negatively on the Kagyu lineage. It is to Lama Ole's credit that while focusing his attention on the spreading of the Dharma, he does not shy away from the controversy. Perhaps that is because he holds the truth of this historical situation in his mind and heart, and therefore need not fear the light of day when looking at this controversy. It is certainly interesting that the 'other' 17th Karmapa, the one 'recognized' by Beijing, has recently escaped over the mountains to Dharamsala! Did not the Lord Buddha say "I show you suffering and the ending of suffering?" This is a magical book and a magical ride!
Logbook of building centers in the west.......2000-01-02
A discription of Ole Nydahls work in building up and cherishing a western community of buddhists. A lot of illustrative pictures. The book is a sequal to Riding the Tiger, but Ole has now a clear program of establishing Karmapas buddhism in the west. It's a down to earth but solid system of tibetan buddhism. Ole's work is still growing and right now gaining momentum with 17.Karmapa in Europe. So I'm looking forward to another sequal of his biography.
The auto commentary of a controversial figure.......1999-03-28
This book is an interesting read. If read on a superficial level, it gives a rather entertaining insight into the life of one of the first Western disciples of His Holiness 16th Gyalwa Karmapa. If the reader reads a bit deeper, the book sadly portrays a level of deception that casts a serious doubt on the authors motivation. In one chapter in particular, the author reproduces a letter written at the instigation of Ven.Chogyam Trungpa Rinpoche in which he effectively bans the author from teaching at any of his centres - the most numerous of any Tibetan tradition in America at the time. The author amazingly launches into a diatribe of childish ridicule and dismissive abuse which sadly confirms the accusations cast in the letter itself. I found this most disappointing. On the whole, an entertaining read.
Successful to Transmit the True Aspect of Dharma.......1998-10-16
Lama Ole, One of the first western desciple of His Holiness Karmapa describes the joy and struggles of discovering the true nature of our mind.He honestly tells us about his feeling while taking the huge responsibility of bringing Tibetan Buddhist Teaching to the west. Plus, one can enjoy his travel adventure to south asia and Tibet and the description he gives about people and places he has confronted. This book is very much successful to shade light on the true nature of Guru- Desciple relationship. His devotion and confidence on Karmapa,( Reincarneted Buddhist Master, also Head of, one of the school on Tibetan Buddhism) is really Illustrious! Thanks! for sharing your treasure, Dear Lama Ole.

Fun for All Ages.......2007-03-17
I wasn't sure how my seven-year-old son would feel about this book after having been so excited about Captain Underpants, but I was intrigued by the Mayan setting and the Fortune Teller character, so I thought we'd give it a try. Turns out my son LOVED the book. Every night, he chanted "Kichi! Kichi!" He was totally unphased by the unfamiliar Mexican words and didn't get bored when there were no pictures, like he usually does. The various animals were humorously characterized and the action moves along at a nice clip. A great story for both mother and child!
Wonderful read.......2007-01-25
I have read all of Ms. Guzman's books and found Kichi a delite. Step out of your thinking that a talking dog is out of the norm, and enjoy the trip through the jungle with the animals he encounters. Get a sniped of acient Myian culture and hold your breath as Kichi finds his way. This is a great read for a young reader.

More than just another 'ABC' book for preschool and kindergarten children.......2007-06-10
More than just another 'ABC' book for preschool and kindergarten children, author and illustrator Karen Lee's "ABC Safari" is an animal themed rhyming journey that draws upon diverse animals from around the world, some of whom will be familiar to young readers, others that will prove to be exotic. The carnivorous and herbivorous animals cited and portrayed through museum quality artwork. The animals are backgrounded by their appropriate habitats, biomes, and geographic regions ranging from cold tundras, to hot deserts, to African jungles, to the Himalayan mountains. Young readers are challenged to find the hidden safari boy and his pet parrot in each illustration. Also available in a paperback edition and enhanced with fun facts for each animal, "ABC Safari" is enthusiastically recommended for family, preschool, and kindergarten collections for kids ages 3 to 7.
The Alphbet on Safari.......2007-05-23
ABC Safari
Author Karen Lee has come through again in ABC Safari! Like her previous books, One Odd Day and My Even Day, she offers a fun way to learn. This time it is the alphabet on a safari journey to meet animals around the world. A boy and his parrot, like the young reader, unobtrusively observe each animal in its habitat. Can you spot the boy in each picture?
Ms. Lee paints each animal accurately and to scale in its environment. This is an important feature for the young reader to learn size and scale. The rhyming text flows to an easy beat so that a teacher could use each animal's verse for movement or dramatization. The animal flash cards at the end of the book are a brilliant addition. Pre-readers will enjoy identifying each animal. Quite highly recommended for ages 2 to 7.
Welcome to the jungle.......2007-04-06
(Available in both hardcover and paperback)
Join your child on an adventure as you read ABC Safari by Karen Lee.
Search for the young guide and his colorful parrot as they discover creatures from every part of the globe. Rhyming text enhances the enjoyment of the colorful and realistic illustrations. Unusual animals in exotic habitats provide an introduction to the study of different species in a format that is easily understood by younger children.
I especially enjoyed the reproducible animal cards that were provided at the end of the story. Each card has additional trivia about the animals. These can be used for games that are both educational and fun.
Karen Lee has illustrated other books for Sylvan Dell: My Even Day (see our review) and A Very Good Day. One Odd Day is due fall 2007. In ABC Safari, her drawings are wonderfully whimsical as your child is taken through mountains and hills, meadows and plains, deserts and jungles--while the child tries to find the animal.
A website address is included with links for more information about each of the animals in alphabetical order of course!
Armchair Interviews says: ABC Safari is a fun and creative way to enjoy learning with your children.

Book Description
Although the time Bruce Lee spent in Oakland, California is often treated as a mere footnote on his path to stardom, these years had a substantial impact on the martial artist and man he would become. After many years of research, authors Sid Campbell and Greglon Yimm Lee (son of James Yimm Lee) continue their fascinating, up-close description of Bruce Lee's early life.
The Dragon and the Tiger, Volume 2 takes up where Volume 1 left off, detailing Bruce Lee's departure from Seattle and his adventure-filled return to Oakland. We follow him as he comes to better know Gung-fu extraordinaire James Lee and his circle of martial arts friends. As Bruce discovers James's numerous talents—as an author, publisher, martial arts equipment inventor, herbal pharmacologist, body builder, and phenomenal 'brick breaker'—he begins to make regular trips from Seattle to Oakland to learn from this exceptional man. Bruce Lee also begins teaching his Jun Fan Gung-fu and elements of chun to his newfound friend.
Bruce Lee and James Yimm Lee were both highly opinionated free thinkers and when Bruce and his new bride Linda Emery Lee moved to Oakland and lived with James Lee's family, they began to share ideas, insights, philosophies, friendship, camaraderie, and a deep respect for one another's special traits and talents. Although James was twenty years Bruce's senior, they forged a bond and became more like brothers than friends- young Greglon Lee even took to calling Bruce and Linda 'Uncle' and 'Aunt.' This rare friendship and further never-before-revealed details from the life of the young Bruce Lee unfold in The Dragon and the Tiger, Volume 2, a story the authors refer to as the 'Fusion of Two Fighters.'
Customer Reviews:
The History of America's Forgotten Martial Pioneers.......2006-03-02
Volume two picks up where the previous issue left off. Plenty of stories here to delight the curious, as featured Bruce Lee and James Yimm Lee interact with Kenpo's Ralph Castro, T.Y. Wong, Al Novak, Wally Jay, etc. While it is probably the name of Bruce Lee that will attract most readers, it is the story of James Yimm Lee that I have been following. The experiences of these men are intertwined as they search for understanding and mastery over themselves. These are the days before Bruce Lee's fame as a screen star, when James Yimm Lee Introduces Bruce Lee to bodybuilding, and Bruce teaches James the Sil Lim Tao form of Wing Chun Kung Fu. James teaches Bruce how to break bricks, and Bruce Lee brings James to a new level in Chi Sao. Bruce is fascinated with a method of breaking whereby James and his student Al Novak are able to break a specified brick out of a stack of many...Bruce wants to know how it is done, and James tells him. One third of the book deals with the effort to write and publish Bruce Lee's first book, "Chinese Gung-Fu: The Philosophical Art of Self-Defense".
One of the faults of this series is that it is written as a long story. There are no footnotes, no bibliography or index at the back. This makes it awfully hard to use as a factual reference. Were there interviews done, and with whom? Who contributed to this book, is entirely based on the memories of James Yimm Lee's son, Greglon Lee? That aside, "The Dragon and The Tiger" series makes for an enjoyable read. More's the pity that so many of the pioneers of physical culture and martial arts from that era remain unknown and unheralded. Perhaps along with James Lee, someday we will have detailed accounts of (or by for those who are still with us) Al Novak, Lau Bun, T.Y. Wong, James Wing Woo and Paul Pung to keep Bruce company on our shelves.

In Search of Tiger: A Journey Through Golf with Tiger Woods

Since storming onto the PGA Tour in 1996 and winning the Masters in 1997, Tiger Woods has topped golf's leader boards in most of the important categories, including ink. No golfer--indeed, no athlete, except maybe Michael Jordan and Muhammad Ali--has been the subject of so many words in such a short time. In Raising the Bar, Tim Rosaforte adds to the flow, focusing on how Woods rebuilt himself and his game after the 1997 Masters and the slump of 1998. What's happened since, of course, is history.
And Rosaforte is there for every part of it. The conquests. The struggles. The endorsements, the contracts, the commercials. Tigermania. The horrible performance in the 1997 Ryder Cup matches. The doubts. The questions. The reassessment and reformulation of his game under the guidance of Butch Harmon. The weightlifting and fitness routine. The streak. The majors. The Grand Slam. It's a riveting triumph of will and focus, hard work and raw talent.
If Woods's game raises the bar--and there's no doubt that it has--Rosaforte's chronicle can't quite match the standards set by his subject. Yes, the book is well reported and certainly readable, but it seems rushed, a recapitulation churned out to be timely, rather than an analysis of a phenomenon that might be timeless in itself. Perhaps it's just too soon to expect that in a book, but if Tiger can raise the bar on the course, there's no reason the scribes who have him in their sights can't raise it some, as well. --Jeff Silverman
Book Description
The Masters, the U.S. Open, the British Open, the PGA Championship. The Career Grand Slam.At age 24.He could very well be the greatest golfer to ever play the game.Raising the Bar is the story of how Tiger Woods changed his life, his game, and the way America views golf. There have been many biographies written about Tiger's life and early days with the PGA, but each ends with his triumphant victory in the 1997 Masters Championship. In the last few years Tiger has endured a lifetime of experiences, including his growing pains, his perceived slump in 1998, his incredible winning streak from 1999--2000, culminating in his career grand slam. Critically acclaimed golf writer and commentator Tim Rosaforte has watched Tiger since he burst onto the golfing scene and been an up-close observer of the Tiger's life both on and off the course. Totally revised and updated, Raising the Bar includes Tiger's latest victories-including his historic 2001 Masters victory that completed the Tiger slam-and provides intense insight into his amazing career.

Tiger Woods.......2003-01-08
Rising The Bar is a book about a famous golfer named Tiger Woods by Tom Rosaforte. This book follows Tiger as he makes his professional golf career. Tiger was 2 when he started picking up the game of golf. He would watch his father when he would go golfing. When Tiger was 12 he won his first state golf tournament and by the time he was 19 he was in the Junior PGA (professional golf association). By the time Tiger reached the age of 23 he won his first professional golf title.
This book is a very easy book to read, even though it's a big book. Tim uses very easy words to understand. This book follows Tiger through every championship starting from his first one.
I would recommend this book to people who like sports and seeing people do well even though they weren't expected too. I'm the kind of person that likes books that shows how good people do coming from a not so good background. I give this book *** because if follows every detail of Tiger starting when he was a kid.
SHALLOW STUFF HERE.......2002-08-23
I enjoyed the book simply because I enjoy reading just about anything about Tiger. That said, I must say I was rather disapointed in this particular read. Not much original thought or insight to be found here. I was rather amused at the author's efforts to use every arcane and obscure golf term he could think of. He was a bit like a "name dropper" but in this case, he used "golf jargon" rather than celebrities. I also found I extremely difficult to follow the sequence of events. The chronology did not always work out. (I do wonder why publishers do not use editors anymore???? If I had one I certainly would not be misspelling so many words). Often times I found one event or one bit of information referred to differently, even in the same paragraph. All in all, I have read better.
Raising The Bar.......2001-04-12
Boring. Boring. Boring.
I almost gave up on the book after about 30 pages, but it was given to me as a gift and I like to finish that which I start.
If this book had to be written (?) then it should have been written by someone who could at least hold your attention, if not excite.
Tim Rosaforte shows little writing talent and one wonders what he is doing to raise his own bar. His readers and Tiger deserve better.
Having read John Feinstein and having grown up with the writings of Jim Murray perhaps my bar is set too high.
To anyone who wants to take a chance on this book I recommend the public library.
Even Tiger Junkies Will Be Disappointed.......2001-04-06
I have seen Tim Rosaforte on the Golf Channel and read an excerpt in Golf Digest so I was looking forward to this book. There were so many errors and typos--misspellings, wrong words, one whole section out of place--that it was hard to concentrate on the text. Many of the quotes were simply taken from Golf Channel interviews and shows. There was little evidence of research. It was clear that this book was designed to make money by capitalizing on Tiger's celebrity and was rushed to print while we were still talking about the 2000 season. Do publishers have editors and proofreaders any more? Save your money.
Wait till they lower the price or hire a proofreader............2001-02-13
I was genuinely distracted from the content as I found myself reading every page "looking for more typos, inaccurate facts, etc". Many are noted in previous reviews....Butch Harmon is referred to as Bruce....David Duval is later called Davis....etc. I do not know the publishing process but I would think an author should have a vested interested in proofing his product....as well as many others. It is obviously an effort to cash in (the book itself had interesting facts, if you can trust themmmmm)......but also seemed disjointed and like it was slapped together without connection between chapters....bottom line - an inferior quality product given it is a 24 dollar hardcopy new book......wait for the next revision......
