Customer Reviews:
this is a great book that every basketball fan should read!.......2005-01-23
Ok, first I have to admit, I'm a huge fan of UCONN basketball, Diana Taurasi in particular, but that doesn't make me biased:). I think this book is well written, fun to read, funny, and insightful. It tels the story of an amazing basketball team that deserves recognition even though they didn't reach their final goal. I learned a lot from this book, and it made me laugh and cry. I think that anyone who has interest in women's basketball will enjoy this book, especially if you are a fan of the UCONN huskies. Go huskies!:)
Great For Anyone.......2004-12-16
This is the best book I have ever read! It's funny, inspiring, informative, a great all around book for any basketball fan. I recommend this book to anyone and everyone.
Great book of "greatest" team.......2004-06-30
After winning the 2004 NCAA Championship, UConn senior Maria Conlon said, "I feel like it was just yesterday we were lying in the locker room in St. Louis crying our eyes out, saying we never wanted to have this feeling again. Sure enough, we never did."
Perhaps the true greatness of the 00-01 Huskies can only now be appreciated. Could Taurasi & Co hunger for excellence without first knowing the bitterness of falling just short? This book can add fuel to the argument.
I love this book!.......2004-05-11
I am an avid Husky fan, and I loved this book. I bought it after this year's double championships.i enjoyed reading about the players, about Diana's first and Sveta and Shea's last. This book is a must for any Husky or Women's basketballl fan.
Awesome.......2003-08-02
This is a great book that shows a great basketball program. It shows the struggles and triumphs of the season. John Walters did an excellent job at writing this book and capturing the true meaning of UCONN basketball.
Book Description
It was a crumbling city, like so many others. But in Hartford five gifted young men, who met as high school athletes, promised their lives to the hometown that shaped them even as it was coming apart. They intended to go far. They would, they pledged, bring back college degrees and commit themselves to living and working in Hartford. This is the story of those five men and how they kept, or broke, that promise—told by a writer whose own family history and departure are also part of Hartford’s struggle. It is a story of hope and heartbreak; love, sacrifice, and murder; big-time college football and police brutality; a drug sting that fells a high school coach; and, finally, a reunion of friends who have learned how hard it is to honor the past and live for the future in a place like Hartford.
Through it all Michael Downs comes to terms with his own decision to leave his hometown and abandon his ailing grandparents to a city that shows little mercy. His is very much a narrative of our nation of migrants and immigrants, where we must forever ask: What happens to those we leave behind? And how can we make peace with ourselves when we can no longer help the places we once called home?

thoughtful & interesting.......2007-06-18
Makes a person think about education, urban planning and the cost of suberbia.
A Tale Well Told.......2007-04-11
Michael Downs has done a wonderful job of weaving in his personal life with a story of hopes and dreams--some realized and some not. At times, his prose is poetic. The story of the virtual collapse of huge chunks of Hartford is a story that has played out in major cities across America. This story, extremely well-documented and reported, is uniquely and poignantly told.

The authoritative guide to the Connecticut River for boaters, canoeists, and kayakers.
Book Description
Hudson River School paintings are among America's most admired and well-loved artworks. Such artists as Thomas Cole, Frederic Church, and Albert Bierstadt left a powerful legacy to American art, embodying in their epic works the reverence for nature and the national idealism that prevailed during the middle of the nineteenth century. This book features fifty-seven major Hudson River School paintings from the collection of the Wadsworth Atheneum Museum of Art, recognized as the most extensive and finest in the world. Gorgeously and amply illustrated, the book includes paintings by all the major figures of the Hudson River School. Each work is beautifully reproduced in full color and is accompanied by a concise description of its significance and historical background. The book also includes artists' biographies and a brief introduction to American nineteenth-century landscape painting and the Wadsworth Atheneum's unique role in collecting Hudson River pictures.

Great river reviews - your mileage may vary!.......2007-01-03
A handy sized, informative guide to rivers in our area. We have used this to plan numerous trips on rivers and have found the guide to be (relatively) accurate and easy to use. Having said that, we discovered (duh!) that rivers change over time and that this guide is a great STARTING point for trip planning. Good scouting and maybe talking to people with experience on the river in question are valuable parts of good trip prep. There is a website for the book where people can submit changes or inaccuracies that they have discovered - this helps to keep the guide current. All in all one of the best we've looked at.
Book Description
Of the forty-seven families set forth here (Hale and House and forty-five others), fourteen lived in Glastonbury or its mother town of Wetherfield, four were of Hartford, and two of Windsor; while on the Massachusetts side, fourteen lived in Springfield and six others were located in Northampton, Hadley, Hatfield, and Deerfield. Two were in Saybrook, at the mouth of the Connecticut River, and five were scattered. Mr. Jacobus, who built on Mr. Waterman's files, succeeded in presenting exhaustive data from original sources, in providing new interpretations as well as additions and corrections to existing literature, and in making the family accounts definitive. The index alone bears reference to some 16,500 persons.
The following, not including the Hale and House families, is a list of the main families treated in the work: Samuel Allen, William Backus, Mary Betts, John Bidwell, Thomas Bliss, Robert Blott, Samuel Boteman, Henry Burt, Richard Church, John Clark, Thomas Cooper, Robert Day, Emanuel Downing, John Dumbleton, William Edwards, Nathaniel Ely, John Frary, William Goodrich, Thomas Graves, William Hills, Luke Hitchcock, John Hollister, Edward Holyoke, Margaret (Baret) Huntington, John Keep, Thomas Kilbourn, Thomas Kimberly, John Leonard, Thomas Loveland, Thomas Marshfield, Matthew Marvin, Thomas Miller, William Pratt, William Pynchon, John Riley, John Scott, Rev. John Warham, Gov. Thomas Welles, John Wilcox, and Thomas Woolford.

Remarkable account of an investigation........2006-08-30
Philip Ginsburg has done it again! Like Poisoned Blood, I could hardly put this book down. Shadow of Death is an in-depth look at a series of murders and the investigations in New Hampshire and Vermont in the 1980s. As I read, I experienced the frustration and the urgency of the detectives and the profiler to catch the killer (or killers). Although the murders remain unsolved, it wasn't for lack of trying. Philip Ginsburg has done a remarkable job in relating the murders, and detailing the victims, the psychologist, and the detectives, to the point where you know them well. Truly one of the best books on a serial murder investigation.
This is what true crime should be - almost.......2006-04-12
I've reread this countless times. I have ties to the area and was amazed at how little public play this got while it was happening. I still need to know the answer of "who" but it is without a doubt one of the best true crime books ever written
The best book of all time.......2000-06-15
When you first read this book you will probably think this is the best book ever written, I did! I live in New Hampshire and when I read it I was so entriged by the wording that it just pulled me into the book and I thought I was one of the FBI officers working on the case with them. If you like to read Supense Thriller and Murder books you will diffently want to add this book to your collect like I did. I hope you read this book, and enjoyed it as must as I did. Well, I actually know you will love it so much that you will log on to Amazon.com and order the book as fast you can! ....
Book Description

Travel through time and memory.......2005-01-26
This is such an enjoyable read for a history lover. The magical stories and obscure tidbits from the Connecticut River Valleys history come to life in this well written book. The characters are three dimentional and the book makes you want to travel the length of the river just to see what it is like today! Take a trip to Deerfield, Amherst, Windsor and Old Saybrook...meet Mark Twain and others. I recommend it to anyone who has spent some time in this history rich area.
Long River Winding: Life, Love & Death Along the Connecticut.......2003-04-27
Long River Winding is a very interesting, reader friendly book with something for everyone. Anyone who likes history, travel and especially people, should find this a good book. It gives glimpses into people's lives, some famous and others not famous, with humor and sensitivity. I enjoyed it very much and highly recommend it.
Great fun!.......2003-04-23
I loved this book! Highly enjoyable for armchair travellers, history buffs, and lovers of New England lore. I felt as if I were travelling with the author through the Connecticut River Valley, past and present, having experiences like riding with the chief of police in Holyoke, Massachusetts, witnessing family life in Mark Twain's home in Hartford, or meeting "the feisty women of Old Saybrook." Heroes, villains, witches, and geniuses are all here. There are probably 40 or so little-known human stories of "life, love, and death"that took place in New England but are universal in their themes of humor, drama, and poignancy. Travel notes at the end of each chapter help you visit the sites mentioned by the author, making this book a useful travel guide as well as fun to read. I never realized how fascinating the Connecticut River Valley is. It's one of America's great places and best-kept secrets.

An Absorbing History.......2001-06-13
We've all heard the old saw that those who ignore the mistakes of the past are doomed to repeat them. As we face growing environmental crises throughout the globe at the outset of the 21st century, it's critical for those who hope to maintain our planet's delicate balance to understand the history behind environmental movements of the past, and where reformers have succeeded and failed in their efforts to confront a rapidly changing society's impact on the natural world.
In Reasonable Use, Cumbler, an environmental historian at the University of Louisville, traces the dramatic shift New England experienced between the Colonial era and the pre-World War II period. Focusing mostly on the 19th century and the impact of industrialization, overfishing, deforestation and the arrival of dams and cities along the Connecticut River during that time period, Cumbler describes not only how states like Massachusetts, Connecticut and New Hampshire reacted to increased pollution but also the characters who drove the responses and how each of the major players reflected broader themes and approaches to humans' role in the natural world.
The major players - people like Henry David Thoreau, Henry Ingersoll Bowditch, George Perkins Marsh and Theodore Lyman - represented the range of elite thinking during that time. The questions they faced regarding the value of fish to an ecosystem, the effect of pollution on populations, the problem of waste disposal and - most important - the comparative merits of industrial progress versus a clean environment, are all questions that we still confront today. Though the unobservant reader may miss it, Cumbler also offers particularly pointed commentary on the critical lessons those who hope to effect environmental reforms today should learn from the failures of those who sought to go up against the entrenched powers of industry in 19th century New England.
So while the casual observer may mistakenly assume that this book will appeal primarily to those with a regional interest in the area and era, in fact Cumbler offers a wealth of judiciously documented thoughts on the nature of the relations of power, paarticularly as they interact when the object of the struggle - the environment - cannot speak for itself.
Also, besides delivering an engrossing and thoughful historical document, Cumbler additionally weaves a compelling tale that maintains the readers interest, even as he shares scientific data regarding such esoterica as the composition of dissolved oxygen in a water system or the workings of fishways in a dam. The book is well-written and deserves a broader audience than merely environmental history buffs. We can all pick up a thing or two from Henry Bowditch et al, and John Cumbler makes the lessons easy to learn.
