Product Description

An up-to-date manual for modern film development techniques. Companion volume to the bestselling The Darkroom Cookbook, this book concentrates on films, their characteristics and the developers and other chemicals each requires for maximum control of the resulting image. It specifically addresses the difficult subject of T-grain film development and includes rarely found information on film development and the nature of film developers. The authors also tackle many of the widely accepted myths of film development. They reject the trend toward scientific evaluation of films and developers in favor of the photographer s development of a personal aesthetic, without relying exclusively on densitometry or H&D curves. 192 pp., fully illus., 7 x 10 , Spiralbound.

4 out of 5 stars Chemistry.......2006-08-04

Things you never knew about the developing process are in this. I was quite impressed, and am enthusiastic about re-reading it.

5 out of 5 stars ny review of this excellent book.......2005-09-30

very useful, it goes deep in the film developing as expected. It's a good starting point to make the own recipe and to learn *how works this kind of developer*. And many many more useful storic and pratic informations. Simply I love it. Dedicated to everyone feels to be an hero in this digital war against the true, pure, black and white...

3 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing.......2003-07-21

I bought this book as the other books I have are now a bit dated. As the understanding of film development is always evolving, I thought this book would give me the latest ideas and knowledge.
It does to some extent, but I could not help feeling the authors did not take the time to fully research and comprehend the details. Where they have quoted chemists / researchers the details are clear. However where they have tried to interpret or discuss aspects in some places it appears they do not clearly understand what they are trying to explain. The result is that they contradict themselves, fail to make things clear, or just plain get things wrong. They also only seem to address research by Kodak and a few independent researchers. The book thus misses out on research done by Fuji, Agfa, Ilford, etc. which is a significant omission in my opinion.

So is the book worth it ? I think that I would still buy it as there are very few sources of up to date information available. And to be fair, they seem to have taken care in reproducing the formula. However, I would be sure to read some of the older books on developers, and cross check the information before relying on it.

5 out of 5 stars Another great advanced user book from Anchell........2003-02-12

I bought and read every page of all three of Steve Anchell's black and white photo information books: The Variable Contrast Printing Manual, The Film Developing Cookbook, and The Darkroom Cookbook. Why? Because he gives a mix of an historical view plus tells what to pick of the best current chemistries. He does this without bogging down in the actual complexities of a college chemistry course keeping it at a usable technicians level. Since he also tells you why you are using various chemicals or paper his books do not dumb down but instead give you fascinating useful information. Anyone serious about darkroom work will appreciate his insights and commentary about chemistry use. He lists so many historical and current B&W chemical formulas and their use that any B&W experimenter will find the books useful. Beginners may get information overload but anyone who has already done B&W developing will appreciate the vast amount of information. These books could use an overall rewrite to make them a bit simpler to understand, in spite of this they are one of the few sources to accumulate this B&W information and are well worth owning as a reference and explanation.

3 out of 5 stars Great for history and formulas, NOT for beginners..........2002-02-15

I bought this book under the assumption and recommendation that it would teach me how to begin developing my own film... Unfortunately, this is NOT the book for that! This book has great historical value in describing the different formulas, their strengths and weaknesses, and contains charts that are probably valuable to those who ALREADY process their own film. This book is NOT for beginners looking into how one goes about processing their own film!

It's disappointing when a photo of a loved one is marred by "red eye" or the wrong exposure, or when a cherished picture from long ago cracks and fades. Luckily, Katrin Eismann seems to know every trick available in Photoshop for making photographs--film or digital--look just how you want them to, whether that means restoring what has been lost, fixing incorrect exposures, erasing dust and scratches, or even recreating reality. (Who wouldn't want to lose a few wrinkles?) Eismann has the artistic eye to appreciate good photography, the technical savvy to be able to offer numerous solutions to any given problem, and the writing and teaching skills to walk readers clearly through these solutions.

The book assumes readers have a working knowledge of Photoshop. It does not go through the basics or cover complex selections or masking, although it does quickly explain essentials like shortcuts, context-sensitive menus, quick image-navigation tricks, the varieties of layers, and smart file management--all issues that expedite workflow and distinguish regular and power users. The book even outlines what it takes to set up shop as a professional retoucher, discussing equipment, studio arrangement, and working with clients and contracts.

The author strongly advises reading the book from start to finish, and she's structured the projects so that they build upon each other. The book is divided into three sections: correcting tone, exposure, and color; restoration, repairing, and rebuilding; and portrait and glamour retouching. Each page is filled with plenty of before-and-after images, along with screen shots of palettes and dialog boxes.

This book makes tackling each of your photo's flaws look easy--it seems like even the worst photo can be saved. Also, by the end, readers will have an appreciation for those who do retouching for a living--it takes planning, a good eye, consistency, and a lot of organization, or you're just flailing away with adjustment layers. You can get a look at a sample tutorial and chapter on the companion Web site, digitalretouch.org, which also includes all project images and other resources. --Angelynn Grant

5 out of 5 stars Excellent job writing this book........2004-02-08

I'm a novice who wanted to restore a whole bunch of all photos from family that my grandmother had in her atic, so I decided to buy Photohop by recomendation of a friend of mind. I have no previous experience in this field, but this book was everything I needed it.
The author is so detailed and the practices so well prepare that it took me no time to hands of it, and look like a profesional in front of my entire family and friends. I would recommend this book to anyone, experts or novices like me.

5 out of 5 stars A Gift for the Flaw-Plagued Photographer.......2003-11-12

I will admit it. Many of my photos have flaws. Many have not been preserved properly.

They represent memories, however, so I am reluctant to toss them in the trash. Katrin Eisman's book equipped me with the skills to restore them to a state to which I can be proud. This book has helped me take my well-intentioned, yet poorly executed photos, correct the color, contrast and tone. Mold, cracks and torn edges mystically disappear.

The moments I attempted to preserve were precious to me. The beautiful images that result from her easy to find, easy to follow, step-by-step instructions are a gift.

5 out of 5 stars Great book of Photoshop Knowlege.......2003-08-19

I've been thru this book, was not able to put it down. After going throught the tutorials and reading through the chapters I feel very confident that I will be able to really bring poor pictures back to justice. Katrin really knows how to explain the subject along with showing very good examples of work done, this is a must have for anyone wanting to step their feet into photo restoration and retouching, and not just switching a monkey head for a real one. I have actually read through this book twice since I've had it.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant.......2003-05-06

This is a deep, professional treatment of it's topic. I've seen several nice books on retouching, but none that treat restoration with such skill. Eismann doesn't back away from the really treacherous restoration problems and obviously enjoys tackling and renewing a photo that everyone else considers hopeless. She generously offers up information and techniques that I think a lot of other restorers would jealously guard.

I was recently put in charge of digitally archiving and restoring my family's pictures. Some photos dating from the 1800's were in terrible condition--my main problem was the images had faded to almost nothing. I bought this book because Eismann specifically addresses this problem and my results were fantastic. My family thinks I'm a photoshop magician (I'm not--I consider myself a solid intermediate user who intends on becoming a photoshop magician....) and I am so proud that I was able to preserve something this important to my family.

The other reviews support how terrific this book is but I really wanted to show my appreciation by adding another. With so many expensive photoshop books to wade through, this one rises to the top as essential.

PS--I use photoshop 7. Though this book was printed before photoshop 7 was released, it is still completely relevant. People who think the "healing brush" (wonderful as it is) fixes all ills couldn't have very big restoration problems.

5 out of 5 stars Do Yourself A Favor And Get It.......2003-04-17

This is a fantastic book for photographers who wish to gain greater facility with Photoshop. It is (appropriately enough for a photography book) written in a pellucid style, and it's fun to use and jam-packed with useful tips and information. The author's website provides an additional ton of up-to-the-minute information and advice. The book will pay for itself many times over in the form of materials you didn't waste and frustration you didn't experience.

Book Description

Copper Plate Photogravure describes in comprehensive detail the technique of traditional copper plate photogravure as would be practiced by visual artists using normally available facilities and materials. Attention is paid to step-by-step guidance through the many stages of the process. A detailed manual of technique, Copper Plate Photogravure also offers the history of the medium and reference to past alternative methods of practice.

Copper Plate Photogravure: Demystifying the Process is part of the current revitalization of one of the most satisfyingly beautiful image-making processes. The range of ink color and paper quality possibilities is endless. The potential for handwork and alteration of the copper plate provides yet another realm of expressive variation. The subject matter and the treatment are as variable and broad as photography itself. This book's purpose is to demystify and clarify what is a complex but altogether "do-able" photomechanical process using currently available materials. With Copper Plate Photogravure, you will learn how to:

· produce a full-scale film positive from a photographic negative
· sensitize the gravure tissue to prepare it for exposure to the positive
· prepare the plate and develop the gelatin resist prior to etching
· prepare the various strengths of etching solutions and etch the plate to achieve a full tonal scale
· rework the plate using printmaking tools to correct flaws or to adjust the image for aesthetic reasons
· use the appropriate printing inks, ink additives, quality papers, and printshop equipment to produce a high
quality print

A historical survey and appendices of detailed technical information, charts, and tables are included, as well as a list of suppliers and sources for the materials required, some of which are highly specialized. A comprehensive glossary
introduces the non-photographer or non-printmaker to many of the terms particular to those fields and associated with this process.

* Follow step-by-step basic printing procedures for a photogravure plate, complete with trouble shooting information

* Valuable information is offered on the materials, procedures, and printshop equipment

* Study the historical precedents from the invention of photography to its current commercial use

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A very user friendly book on photogravure.......2003-06-16

This new book on the process of photogravure is very well done. It's basic technique is very similar to Deli Sacilotto's now out of print (and almost impossible to find) book. However, Morris and MacCallum have added many useful hint and detailed steps. They have also included a wealth of step by step photographs, and a trouble shooting section at the end of each chapter. With all the variables that can (and always do) creep into the photogravure process, these trouble shooting sections could be very useful. Photogravure is a very complicated process, but, as the title of this book suggests, it should help to sort out a lot of the mystery. This is the most useful book I have read on photogravure, and, heck, it's the only one in print right now!

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Book!!!.......2007-04-10

This books is based on the old saying, "Give a man a fish and he'll eat for a day, teach him to fish and he'll eat for a lifetime." It teaches you how you can make changes to your 'raw' pictures into works of art. It emphasized the concept that can actually be applied to any type of photography. Personally, I like to take Portrait, Street Life, and Candid. This book really hope me to think more of how and what I want to have as my final result from the pictures I take. I used to think that postproduction of a picture is pointless but the more I learned from this book. It became more evident that that is not the case. It is an essential part of digital photography. Now, I can make the pictures I take to come out exactly the way I intended it to be.

5 out of 5 stars More than a book about photographing women........2007-03-27

A practical guide to understanding and using lighting to capture the image as well as many useful techniques for improving images of people, especially women.

2 out of 5 stars Margins? What are those?.......2007-03-17

I agree with the previous 2-star review; the typography in this edition is beyond atrocious. I can understand the decision to make the text so large--I'm sure a lot of people will want to set the book down somewhere on their desk while they follow along with the tutorials, and microscopic fonts would make that virtually impossible--but this is really sub-par. There are so many ridiculous flourishes and calligraphic captions that everything on the page is competing for your eye's attention, and unfortunately, the wrong element usually ends up winning (those oversized bluish brackets that adorn every single caption, callout and pull-quote for example). What's worse, whoever laid the thing out absolutely insisted upon using up every single millimeter of available space on the page, resulting in tangents a-plenty and margins of less than 1/16th of an inch in many cases. Have fun reading that.

Content-wise, it's OK. The information Mr. Ames provides is not bad by any means, but I wouldn't call it "groundbreaking", either. There should really be a lot more screenshots of the layers palette than there are words in most of the tutorials as it's easy to get lost in the text thanks to all the aforementioned typographical concerns, and his methods of building hair masks will prove difficult to apply to many situations his examples do not cover. I'm not a fan of his method of layer organization, either, but that's one of those deeply personal things everyone evolves on their own.

If you're just getting started in the retouching or fashion business, there are plenty of good pointers in here. If you've been using Photoshop for the last 15 years, don't expect to learn much you didn't already know. Mr. Ames is a fine retouch artist, but he's neither the magician nor the pioneer some would make him out to be. All of his methods predate him and he freely admits as much in the text. I would not recommend this to anyone but an absolute beginner, and even then I would feel guilty about it just because it's so darn horribly put together.

5 out of 5 stars The Art of Photographing.......2007-02-18

Very interesting book, with many description "how todo". The plus is to have the possibility to download the original files and try to do the same as Kevin, before trying on your own photography. Thanks for this great help.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for the Glamour Photographer!.......2007-01-10

When I first got Photoshop a year ago, my reaction was "now what?". I purchsed "The Photoshop CS2 Book for Digital Photographers" by Scott Kelby (also a great book) and started learning. While it helped me start understanding Camera RAW and how to use Photoshop, the term "workflow" was still a mystery to me. Then I found Kevin's CS book. I finally got it!

This book was a valuable resource in esablishing what have now become my workflow processes. Not only the processes, but Kevin teaches you how to put them into actions, and how to establish an archiving process. Huge time savings!

Since the book is about photographing women, there is a lot of information on Photoshop features that lend themselves to retouching glamour photos.

I have also attended Kevin's one-day seminar on Photoshop workflow, and while much of the information I already knew from his book, there was a lot of valuable information that I picked up, and many times "seeing" drives a point home better than "reading" ever could.

I highly recommend this book!

5 out of 5 stars The best and the... worst?.......2007-03-12

Best material in Black and White photography. The text is perfect. The pictures and the print quality have a lot to desire. This is a book you will not buy for its looks. But, the content is fantastic. For all your answers to necessary techniques in B&W you will not find a better more concise text. After reading the book cover to cover I have to say that the worst (print/looks) is insignificant when compared to the material and information covered. I wish the book is reprinted in higher quality. Five stars for a book that delivers what its title claims.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to BW Photography.......2006-11-24

I have used this text in my introduction to black and white photography course for just over a year. Student response has been universally positive. We have all found it thorough, well written and easily understood by into students. My only "wish" is that the author had included a section on negative faults such as found in Horenstein's: Black and White Photograpy: A Basic Manual.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent Black and White photography manual!.......2005-11-22

This book, as reviewed by others, is not for first time photographers but is a first class help to those who wish to advance into something a little more technical, but essentially
"on the ball" photography. I found the book to be thoroughly comprehensive, sometimes over technical and needing real concentration to understand these basic principles, but well worth the cost of the book. It is a first class addition to any black and white photographer's library. I wish this sort of volume was available when I first started black and white photography 50 years ago!

5 out of 5 stars fabulous!.......2005-10-08

The book was in amazing condition and the price was very reasonable. It also arrived right on time! VERY VERY helpful book.

3 out of 5 stars Not a beginner's book.......2004-09-15

There is a wealth of information here from the photographer's years of experience but it is organized in an atypical fashion, that is not a logical sort of progression. I can amplify the other reveiewer's comments concerning lack of visual examples. However, if you have a working knowledge of black and white photography and have done some elementary darkroom work you will find this book a "next step" toward fine tuning your skills. The author has some down to earth advice toward equipment and techniques and is not a "purist" toward any style.

Pssst, wanna make a weird photograph? How about a moody blue cyanotype or a Kallitype? Or maybe a ziatype, anthotype, or Ambrotype? Or perhaps you'd just like to know more about image transfer processes or how to make a pinhole camera. Imagine knowing a really cool guy who casually tells you lots of valuable stuff about the history and science of photography while you're working in his experimental darkroom, and you've got the essence of the unusual and delightful Book of Alternative Photographic Processes. Christopher James, a photographer and former Harvard University professor, leads you carefully through the chemistry and use of materials for each process. He offers numerous ways to make negatives and prepare the printing paper, and he coaches you in understanding and accepting the enormously variable effects of each method. Seven useful appendices deal with such topics as safety considerations and resources on the Web. Unlike the narrowly task-oriented approach of average how-to guide, this one points you to a much bigger world. Even the illustrations include a generous assortment of contemporary prints--among them James's own inventive images--as well as work by 19th- and early-20th-century photographers. They were the ones who pioneered most of the techniques that are now considered "alternative."

The fun of this book--even for someone unlikely ever to set foot in a darkroom--lies in the author's fascinating excursions into the wide world of knowledge, from the workings of 3-D to Charles Babbage's steam-driven punch-card systems. Equally compelling are the author's sense of humor and his utter lack of dogmatism. "In gum printing," he writes, "there are very few absolutely correct ways to do anything." --Cathy Curtis

5 out of 5 stars Best book I have found so far..........2006-03-23

This book is great. It has nearly every process I was interested in, and steps you through each of them with: easy to follow instructions, checklists of chemicals, and useful/helpful pictures.

Theres enough here to interest both the amateur photographer as well as the seasoned professional who is interested in these techniques.

Check it out, I don't think you'll regret it.

5 out of 5 stars one of the best.......2006-03-20

this book is excellent if you're interested in alternative photographic tech's. it is very thourough and offers MANY different processes.

4 out of 5 stars The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes (Book of Alternative Photographic Processes).......2006-02-27

This book is great for someone who has a little experience, or for those who may have a lot. It gives a lot of great ideas for new ways of creating and working on images, and provides a lot of information on how to go about the processes. Some info is pretty technical, but there are plenty of processes that are novice-friendly.

I especially enjoyed the illustrations the book used, because they give you an idea of just what the processes can do--that way you aren't going into it totally blind.

5 out of 5 stars Good Book.......2006-02-25

This book is very informative, and the processes I have done are easy to follow from the book. I highly recommend this book if you are interested in doing alternative photographic processes.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book On Alternative Processes.......2006-02-24

This is an outstanding book for both novice and professional. It is packed with good advice, explicit instructions for many different processes to try, and some wonderful illustrations and examples that provide ample inspiration. I have several books on the subject, and this is one of the most comprehensive.

5 out of 5 stars Best Photo Cropping Book Yet!.......2007-08-30

I have been an avid scrapbooker for years and have yet to find a book that uses the pictures as the true page focal point instead of adding embellishments.... until I saw this book! There is page after page of unique ideas for cropping pictures that will guarantee that your pages will stand out from all the others.

4 out of 5 stars *SCRAPBOOKERS* use those scissors with CREATIVITY !.......2007-08-02

Ever hear of *SHEAR-CROPPERS* ? "Creative P.C. (Photo Cropping) for Scrapbooks" is a book crammed with examples of "creative cropping" - - including new twists & challenges. My favorites are weaving, vertical panoramas and kaleidoscope mats.

Patterns can be imitated or cleverly adapted for using your own treasured photographs. The fun is in trying out all of the different effects. Only in a "How-To" book would so many fill consecutive pages, but finished products can also be framed as gifts, &/or placed as decorative accents in homes.

The book is obviously not the work of one individual - - many have worked together to demonstrate ideas for cropping in distinctive ways that will liven the pages of scrapbooks. It is all part of a thriving industry whose many enthusiasts love to learn & share new techniques. Even in the very small (15,071) Indiana county where Reviewer mcHAIKU lives, there are two shops and one 'commercial' individual in the largest town (population: 826)!
This shows that you can get help anywhere to produce *BLUE RIBBON scrapbooks* - - and especially by using books such as "Creative Photo Cropping." (mcHaiku: 8.2.07)

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, especially for apprentice scrapbookers!.......2007-01-29

This book is well worth the price. It offers many unique ideas. It has the basics for your beginner scrapbookers, but is full of challenge ideas for apprentice or even seasoned scrapbookers!

4 out of 5 stars Simply the Best.......2006-09-11

An excellent book for all levels of scrapbookers, but especially so for those who are just beginning. Well done.

5 out of 5 stars Refreshing new ideas for the medium-advanced scrapbooker!.......2005-11-30

I have looked and wasted so much money buying scrapbooking books here and there for these tiny bits of "goodness" in them. When this book arrived I realized I finally found a true inspiration book - no fluff, no fillers, no really basic-how-to-scrapbook instructions. Everytime I open this book I become entralled with the examples....(Ooohhh, I NEED to do that next time...WAAYY TOO COOL!).

If you are a beginning scrapbooker - this book is not for you. The methods of cutting or cropping are better left to those who've gained experience with cropping photos and using a paper trimmer. A better book for you would be Scrapbooking for Dummies (covers a wide variety of basics) or a class.

However, if you treat your paper trimmer like a third arm and are quite comfortable with it - you've got to get this book! Well worth the price even at full retail!

5 out of 5 stars Coming Into Focus.......2005-10-13

This is a wonderful book that tells you everything you want to know about alternative printing processes. I used to have "Keepers of Light" but lost it, so I ordered this as a replacement. It contains everything the other book did, plus information on using digital technology. A real resource for any serious photographer who is a purest at heart and wants to keep the old traditions alive.
Suzanne Ludlum-Loose

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2005-03-25

The author tells you everything you would reasonably want to know about the wide spectrum of non-traditional photographic methods. But not only does he talk about these alternate processes, he explains in step-by-step detail how to actually DO these techniques yourself. Great content, very well written.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent, Well Written Book.......2002-05-28

I whole-heartedly recommend this book. I also have "The Book of Alternative Photographic Processes" by Christopher James, another good book, but I always go back to "Coming into Focus". This book is laid out in a very accessible manner, each section is written clearly and concisely, and the processes are described so that you understand and can start experimenting almost immediately (once you acquire the necessary materials for the relevant process). Again, this book is a very useful one, and a handy reference to have around.

5 out of 5 stars A nice addition to any alt-photo library.......2000-09-13

A compelling blend of traditional processes takes on new life with new, improved chemical formats and digital techniques. Any artist working in alternative processes arrives, sooner or later, at their own individual methods and unique combinations of techniques. This book provides many examples of working formulas that build upon and further develope the traditional standard favorites. The "recipes" are clearly detailed in an easy-to-follow textbook format, with such new processes as the Fredrick Temperaprint (a tricolor system based on gum dichromate) and the Argyrotype (an iron-silver process similar to Van Dyke). It also seamlessly incorporates the digital technology we rely on more and more.

It's given me a wealth of new ideas and projects to try out, and is sure to become an invaluable resource in my own darkroom.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Tutorial.......2006-09-07

This is a great book- full of artistic pieces and knowledge on how to recreate your own work! I wanted this book for a long time, found it on Amazon and paid a fraction of what I would have paid in the store!

5 out of 5 stars Timeless Information.......2006-03-17

Though this book was published clear back in 1997, the information is timeless. I tend to shy away from older how-to books, but this is a great book to add to your art and craft library. I wish all how-to books were this thorough and informative. You get your money's worth here.

5 out of 5 stars The only book on this you will ever need!.......2005-12-15

I've been wanting both of her books for awhile now and I finally splurged and got both of them (the Polaroid Manipulations book that concentrates on the SX-70 manip process).

When I first flipped through this book I was blown away and amazed by the content. This book is the number one resource for helping you along with your Polaroid transfers and emulsion lifts. It is HIGHLY informative. The author guides you step by step and even provides some background information on how the processed were discovered. She also offers a lot of inspirational material in an advanced techniques section of the book. At the end of the book there are artist galleries with drop-dead-gorgeous work!

I recommend this book highly to anyone who wants to get into the alternative processes with the Polaroid medium. Don't hesitate... get a copy today!

5 out of 5 stars Very well constructed.......2004-01-16

This should be in every Alternative Artists(Photographer) library. Well written, excellent examples and very comprehensive. You should be able to flourish in the medium after experiencing this book. Kathleen has consolidated a concise book that brings it all together. A value to all.

5 out of 5 stars Great information and images.......2003-01-15
