5 out of 5 stars Gothic in the old-school tradition.......2007-09-30

I used to collect the older "Crow" comics years ago, before any of the films were made, and I have to say I really regret discarding them now that I can see how much they are worth! To be honest, this is probably one of the few series of comics I remember as being visually interesting and Gothic in nature. It has nothing to do with the movies, really, I can't stand the films. If you're going to invest in some good comics, go for these older Crow series by James O'Barr, especially if you're into old-school Gothic.

3 out of 5 stars A tale of vengeance.......2007-09-13

It's been a long time since I've seen a Crow movie. The concept is cool, but was never more than that for me. I decided I wouldn't judge it on the movies alone, but see where the character stemmed from. After reading it, it peaks my interest in The Crow and makes me want to watch the first movie again with a fresh take on the character now that I know where he comes from.

James O'Barr is the creator/writer/artist. Without going into detail, something very tragic happened to this guy for him to come up with this kind of material and it seems he opted to write a comic as opposed to therapy. Before the character of Eric dies and is reborn again as The Crow, he is very much in love with his girlfriend Shelly. Not long after proposing to her, she and Eric are killed. There is a lot of Eric moping around and crying while remembering her, and it is usually accompanied by a flashback to them when they were alive. This is cool though because we get to gradually see what happened to them their last day alive and why Eric is enacting revenge on these low lives who were responsible.

The story is pretty simple, but it's the way that it is told and the images we see that make it stick. The artwork is very gritty and detailed in some frames. Other times it is rather crude and overly inked but still gets the point across. I like the opposing looks of the dirty, bloody present, and the glowing memories of when he and Shelly are together.

The story is decent but not really something I feel like I got a lot out of. I wouldn't reject something else written by O'Barr but at the same time I wouldn't rush out to get it. I am pretty neutral about the whole thing. If you like gritty crime ridden cities with lots of drugs, guns and violence I can't see why you would turn this away. Plus there's a love story to distract you from all the blood. Either way, it's definitely worth checking out if you're a fan of the Crow movies.

4 out of 5 stars Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03

An influential book, but not one that thrilled me enough to want to read it more than once or twice. A dead man is brought back to life by a mystical force, represented by the black bird.

The backdrop to the murders he is to avenge is the destruction that happens in Detroit around Devil's Night.

5 out of 5 stars a story of love, loss and seeking justice.......2007-09-03

This has got to be one of my favourite stories ever told. It is a story of love, loss and seeking justice where there is none. James has put this heart wrenching story together with the most amazing art work. It is a very dark and tragic story that will leave you feeling the loss and pain that Eric has suffered. There are also a few poems in this graphic novel. This book does help put the important things in life into perspective.

5 out of 5 stars A classic, pure and simple.......2007-06-09

Most people know about "The Crow". Even people who don't read comics have told me, "oh yeah! The Crow! Isn't that the movie where Brandon Lee was killed?" The Crow film's legacy is assured, and it has reached almost beyond cult status to being a truly visual and important film in the panthons of comic book adaptations. But... it started with this book. And far fewer have read it. Some don't even know it exists. And that's a crying shame, because, in many regards, it is far superior to the film it inspired.
O'Barr's "The Crow" has quite a convoluted history, and not even the book itself in its forward or epilogue explains exactly what. I'll leave you to do that little history yourself, but know that it was a book written and drawn by a man who had lost someone important, and it was eating him up inside. His only escape was to vent his emotions, of love, hate, despair, sadness, anger, onto his pages. And it shows. This is both a horrifically gruesome book, but one of shocking beauty. It's juxtapositioning of beauty against brutality is what makes the art work. It's crude at times, and at others poetic. It harkens back to Frank Miller, but with a subtle warmth that Miller's Sin City novels lack. Even the dialogue walks that line, between vulgar and faux-poetic.
But where the novel surpasses the film is in its presentation. While the film was a hard "R", the novel is incredibly more graphic and violent. One does not even know what happened exactly until the novel is almost over, and when that time comes, it's a nauseatic sequence that, though we hate to justify the brutality that Eric, the Crow, does, we can't help but admit they all had it coming. Some of them even seem to come off easy.
This is also a pretty emotional book. Too many comics now tred into soap opera territory with plot twists like character deaths, rebirths, break-ups, etc. The Crow, however, is firmly grounded in reality. Yes, he broods. Yes, he kills. But he also smiles and laughs during rare moments of quiet solitude; because he is mourning. This entire novel is like a visual depiction of mourning, of remembering the good times and the bad, and its done so effectively, so differently, that it immediately stands out. This is a book written not with the end goal of becoming a successful franchise, but as a medium for the artist and writer to express all the things he couldn't say. It's a book truly written from the heart, and in this age of cross-overs, market appeal, flashy action, and publicity stunts, that's a very rare and very admirable thing. I can't recommend this book enough.

Book Description

William Blessing is obsessed with Edgar Allen Poe. Like Poe, he is a writer of dark fantasy. And like Poe, he has powerful enemies. One of them pretends to be a friend, even as he plots to murder William and steal his wife. Blessing's only hope is to learn the truth about his "friend" before...

But this is the realm of the Crow, where the grave is the doorway to the truth. William must walk through it to discover Poe's final secret. Then, and only then, with the help of a dark-winged "Raven," can he return to feed on the human carrion who raped his wife and slaughtered his soul.

1 out of 5 stars FOR THE FIRST NEW CROW NOVEL, VERY POOR...........2004-03-17

Upon reading this book again(my first review back in 2000 and btw..thats my mother's ID..my ID is Deaderman)., I find myself with a dislike for the story now. I applaud the originality of linking the crow with Edgar Allen Poe. I would say that i dislike the story for the simple fact of the Batlimore Goths and the seemingly forced love of Amy and William Blessing. I would not recommend this book to a new crow fan wanting to get into these. Most fans would say that the bad guys in CoA were poorly written and just plain crappy. Well, these guys are far worse. Makes you want to get the story over with just to get away from these poorly executed characters. I would very much agree with all of these negative reviews and in fact join them. Now, onto reading the Lazarus Heart..

4 out of 5 stars Quoth the Crow review.......2003-08-17

A brief synopsis: William Blessing is a famed horror writer, surpassing the likes of Stephen King and Dean Koontz (who says he isn't a horror writer), and he is also the foremost expert on Edgar Allan Poe. Blessing offers a helping hand to a fellow aspiring writer who apparently never paid heed to the phrase "Don't bite the hand that feeds you". Blessing is murdered and plans are made to exploit Blessing's name by this ambitious writer (who's in cahoots with a local goth gang, if you will, called the Gothetiques). This man also has plans to marry Blessing's beautiful widow, Amy.

This book was such a treat for me. As a long time lover of the film "The Crow", the comics, and the television series, I've been longing to get my hands some of the books written by various authors. So, this was my introduction into the world of Crow fiction, and I wasn't disappointed in what I read. I enjoyed this story thoroughly. I never went into this story hoping to make Shrek's analysis, but I did go into this story hoping to be entertained. The characters were interesting. Though, I wasn't sure whether to like Blessing or dislike him at first, which made him all the more "real" because I feel the same mixed feelings about people in my read life. It didn't have the strongest of storylines, some might say it was contrite, but it was solid, giving it a good read.

Now, for my grievances with this story. The author is a compulsive name dropper. It's nice to know that he did his research in horror films and "Goth" music, but the mentioning of nearly 20 groups and 15 "prominent" stars and writer on one page is far too much. I think the author got a little too enamored by what he things the Goth culture is like. Some of the things he described the Gothetiques doing were just borderline corny. I think the way that he dealt with the characters Mick and Theodore was a bit contrived. However, those were minor things that I could look over.

This will definitely continue to be a part of my library for some time to come.

1 out of 5 stars Waste of time and money.......2003-01-17

This book was not at all enjoyable to me. I honestly hope that this author does not look upon "Baltimore Goths" the way he portrayed him in the book. They were corny, along with most of the other characters. He tries to put together "thugs" and "goths" throughout the book. Honestly, if I pick up a book about 'Gothiques' and Poe, I dont wish to be reading about drug trafficing and hits on the Baltimore gangs.
His development of local color is sad too, mindlessly throwing around locations and names and such.
Also, the authors lack of research really shows when he brings up Anton Lavey. He not only spells his name wrong, but brings up animal sacrifice, which is NOT an Anton Lavey/Satanic practice.
If you wish to read something good in the way of The Crow or horror, check out Poppy Z. Brite. She's not the absolute best, but she does make for some good reading, better than this ...

4 out of 5 stars Like your revenge kicked up a notch?.......2002-09-25

First time reader (I've seen the movies) of The Crow series, and I'm certainly glad I picked this as my first book. I've now started collecting some of the others as well. I'm that hooked. For me, this was like The Count of Monte Cristo meets Edgar Allan Poe. I thoroughly enjoyed the Poe references and how the revenge theme was woven into the story line. Talk about your avenging angel! More sinister than Monte Cristo, though. I'd love to see another Crow movie come out soon. You'll be sorry if you haven't read this one yet or, like me, are new to the genre and aren't sure where to start. Start with this one.

The graphic novels are cool as well and are easy reads. Great art work. They help flesh out The Crow in my mind.

5 out of 5 stars SIMPLY ,ABSOLUTELY,DOWNRIGHT AWESOME READING!.......2002-06-12

Very very well written and enjoyable. A must read for sure again and again. The Poe angle added a very wicked touch. All I can say is, that the crow(the man),and crow(the bird)make a awesome tagteam! Revenge is a dish best served cold, and man its north pole SUB-ZERO COLD! I knew I would love this book, once I saw the bird do more that just flap, fly and caw.It didn't take long for the action, and the tone to be set. The characters are well defined, and storyline has a few twists and turns, which only enhances this tale even more! This book would have made a great movie, not crap like the city of angles is. READ THIS BOOK! I qouth ; )

4 out of 5 stars Incredible Dark Fantasy.......2005-08-16

Wow. I read the first chapter of this in "Shattered Dreams" and loved it. The novel kept the promise of the first chapter. I had to keep reminding myself it was a make-believe religion because the setting is so counter to what I believe. That said, the setting was darkly beautiful. I loved the way the author made the demonic world a dark mirror of the angelic world and used Earth as the battlefield. I particularly loved the interaction between the Crow, Dren, and Amy. It may be my favorite of the Crow novels.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Read.......2004-08-15

After reading "Temple of Night" and all the reviews on the series, I still picked up this book ( me being a crow fan and all ). When I cranked it open, I expected the worst. I started reading and my eyes lit up with amazement. I thought " this is going to turn out pretty good". And it did. It's definitely a page turner. I had a little trouble picturing hell and some of the battles as the author was describing it to me. Beside that it ended up being a good book.

5 out of 5 stars THIS SHOULD BE THE TEMPLATE FOR GREAT CROW STORIES.......2004-04-13

After reading this book (the last of the Crow novels put out by HarperPrism), I felt that all the books thus far should have achieved the result of what this story was. Every single character felt realistic and had a purpose that wasn't forgotten (unlike the cop in Lazarus Heart). One element in the book that I disliked was also the one that kept me entranced into the storyline. Having for personal reasons decided to become an atheist, I actually felt informed without it being thrust upon me. The book also spoke of a truth I used to believe in, and to a degree, still do. That GOD is behind all good and evil things. Especially as this book brought it up, even SHE is lost. After telling a friend about my voyage back into the reading the novels, he remarked how his favorite was this one and I can see why. I also thought it very interesting that they ventured out of certain boundaries yet are still able to attain the same goals of the original GN. This one is the best, followed by Wicked Prayer and The Lazarus Heart. Also after being in thought about this book, it's very unfortunate that The Crow is treated with such disregard and disrespect by the people who legally own it especially after seeing the truest potential from this book.

4 out of 5 stars A Hellish 4.......2002-08-16

This book is an enigma of sorts. While I wasn't constantly entertained, I was into the story enough that I kept turning the pages. It kept me up late, which is something a lot of books fail to do. I know you've heard it a thousand times, but if you're a fan of one or more of the crow movies, chances are you'll like this novel spin. Attanasio has an interesting pace and describes potentially confusing action well, but some moments seem to scrape the surface rather than boil over. Overall a good, quick read. Oh, and to fall prey to cliche...the cover is wicked.

3 out of 5 stars Not without its charms.......2001-10-18

I won't lie, this is a great read, but I'm not certain how much I love it as a crow novel. For starters I definately wanted to finish reading the book, and was interested in how it would unfold but I could also put it down whenever i wanted and that's not a great sign. I love the idea of having the influence of hell and demons throughout the book, but stragely this is also my biggest problem with it. If Attanasio had found a better balance between the demons and the crow, I would surely have to rate this book with 5 gleaming stars, but the the balance isn't there as far as I'm concerned. Don't get me wrong, this is still a fantastic book, but not the crow story I think I was looking for. In the end I must recommend this book to anyone after a good fantasy/horror read (Just don't expect too much 'crow').

REVIEW

Simply put, one of the best Buffy novels out there. The action starts quickly as we see a young illegal immigrant narrowly survive death at the hands of Raul and Machete, two vampires who smuggle people across the border (and, sometimes, make a meal out of them). When Riley and his wife Sam are called in to investigate, they get the run-around by the local sheriff and a powerful landowner. Buffy and Angel get called in to help, and the storyline really starts running hot. Add in drug tunnels, werewolves, and a touch of jealousy and you've got a great book.

There are a lot of things that make Seven Crows so good. First, the setting. The area around the Arizona and Mexico border has never been the location for a Buffy story, and John Vornholt does a good job describing the landscape and inhabitants. Second, and I'm as surprised as anyone to say this, Riley and Sam. Somehow these two characters, often rather bland in the show, sparkle in the book and seem far more interesting. As a bonus, the fact that they're not major Buffy stars means Vornholt has more flexibility in making permanent changes to the characters. Last, the characterization and dialogue is top-notch. Buffy and Angel's first meeting is hilarious, and their subsequent . . . awkwardness around each other is played perfectly.

The plot is solid but probably have used a few tweaks near the end, which seems to come too quickly. Still, this is definitely one worth seeking out.

3 out of 5 stars Not bad... Considering........2004-06-05

This was a very readable bit of escapism. As a fan of the shows, I picked up this book looking for something light and quick to read on my breaks at work. I got about what I expected. The writing is average, but the story isn't as bad as some would lead you to believe. Riley isn't my favorite either, but he has his place in Buffydom, and I can deal with him for short amounts of time. Pick this up for a quick fluff read, but don't expect it to make an impact in your life.

1 out of 5 stars Does the author fancy Sam?.......2004-04-05

What is the point of this book? I found it extremely disappointing. I was looking forward to a Buffy/Angel crossover as I love both these characters...unfortunately this book seemed to be all about how wonderful and sexy Sam is. I mean, who cares?! If you bought this book it is likely that you are a fan of Buffy and/or Angel so why the hell would you be interested in hearing all about a minor character who appeared once on Buffy for the sole purpose of exploring how Buffy felt about her ex (her one tenuous link to normality) being totally lost to her? I got the distinct feeling that this author doesn't really know Buffy and Angel all that well. The characters could have been anyone and I had a hard time picturing Buffy and Angel doing the things these characters do. Buffy just as a van driver? Come on! If you are a fan of Sam (and if there are any out there I would love to hear from them!) and would love her to get together with Angel (bizarre!) then this book will be a dream come true. However, if you are a Buffy/Angel fan don't touch it.

3 out of 5 stars Six Vampires, Five Werewolves, and a Partridge in a..........2003-12-30

Riley Finn and his wife and fellow agent Sam find themselves out of their depth. Illegal immigrants are being eaten, drugs are being imported, and the local law has managed to get them called off the case. The solution is to hire a couple of mercenaries. Actually, Sam hires Angel and Riley hires Buffy - creating ome of the more awkward reunions in the history of Verdura, New Mexico.

Soon all four are scouring both sides of the border trying to track down a pair of vampires while being harassed by a sheriff who knows exactly what Angel is and doesn't much care for it. But nobody is quite sure what the sheriff is, only that he is somehow tangled up in a suspicious land deal. Thus we have all the makings of a classical occult western soap opera starring two of our favorite destroyers of bad guys. How can we lose.

Well, we don't lose, but John Vornholt never quite gets the sparks to fly in traditional Angel/Buffy style. The reader keeps expecting something to explode, and instead, the plot continues its merry way with scarcely a ripple. In truth, this story could just as easily have starred any four people and been just as good. But by using this particular cast Vornholt raises expectations and then doesn't follow through.

Still, there is nothing inherently wrong with the story itself. It starts with an interesting premise about alternate uses for illegal immigrants, although I would have liked a bit more detail on the skinwalker side of the story. Vornholt has been a successful Star Trek novelist for some time now, and may simply need to get his bearings a bit better in the wild world of Buffy.

    Book Description

    The Eternal One

At our human limits, when we've gone as far as flesh and imagination can take us, we meet the Eternal One.

    The Crow

Immemorially old and inconsolable , he is there only for those who seek both revenge and love, and are willing to go all the way-and beyond.

    Wicked Prayer

On a coal-black night, on a desolate stretch of Arizona highway, two last-chance lovers die badly.

In these, the final, cruelest moments of his earthly existence, Dan Cody watches as the lifeblood of his lady is sucked down by the thirsty desert sands. In an instant , his heart and his redemption have been blown away by a postmodern witch and her sadistic goth-giant companion on their gor-soaked joyride to immortality.

But even as one life ends in pain and anguish for Dan Cody, another begins . He is about to join those chosen to walk beneath the shadow of the Crow's wing. Revenge will be the sole reason for his return; revenge on tow who are speeding into the night in a '49 lamb's-blood Mercury on the fast track to Hell..or Nevada. And thought Kyra Damon and Johnny Church have embraced evil with a zealor's fervor, they underestimate the power of what's pursuing them from beyond the grave-the rough beast that's now slouching toward Vegas with murderous rage in its dead eyes.

    4 out of 5 stars Super Reader.......2007-08-04

This time, The Crow itself is one of the major characters, and actually talks to the man it is partnered with. Dan and Leticia are murdered by
Kyra and Johnny, a couple who are driven to seek immortality, through Kyra's brush with The Crow. A plaything for a group of wannabe magicians, she reads some old books, and comes across some information on The Crow. She hangs herself, hoping to gain power, but The Crow refuses her, as her fate was brought about by her own hand. Johnny
    rescues her.

To complete her transformation to power, she needs the eyes of a blue eyed crow, and Leticia's mother was a Crow Indian, and her father Irish, leaving her a blue eyed crow. Her boyfriend, Dan, a dweller in the Arizona desert is in the wrong place at the wrong time.

The Crow, risking its own life multiple times brings Dan back, as they desperately try and stop Kyra from completing her ritual, destroying them both.

Norman Partridge's horror writing here is very nice, I'd like to check him out some more.

    3 out of 5 stars A Wicked Story? Maybe.........2004-04-14

This one I would rank personally right around Clash By Night. The love aspect is not strained at all but very natural. What I didn't like, however, was the fact that Partridge chose to write more of Kyra Damon then of Dan Cody, The Crow. It was a good try, for a crow story but it didn't work this time. Also, do all of these authors borrow from each other? One of the supporting characters, Emily Carlisle, her last name is the name of the avatar in Clash By Night. And I also thought Emily was too open to accepting Cody's situation. Otherwise, the story flowed well from one point to another, despite a few disappointing endings

    2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2003-03-28

This book was ok until the end. The end was a major let-down and seemed hurried. I also did not like the fact that Lilith has the grimoire *and* Raymondo.

    5 out of 5 stars NORM RULES!.......2003-03-22

Ok, right now, get you hands on anything and everything you can find by Norman Partridge. I am a big fan of Joe R. Lansdale, and I never thought anything could be a much of a ripping good time as a story or novel by Hisownself, but then along comes Norm. Now i'm not saying he's better than Joe R., just saying he is every bit as good. Partridge mines his own vein, brothers and sisters, and we should all thank him for it. So, on to Wicked Prayer.

Even as a fan of his work, I was a little skeptical at first of Norman Partridge writing a Crow novel. Then I thought: Hey, the whole concept of the Crow is pretty cool, and the Clash By Night novel by Chet Williamson was good, so what am I waiting for?

Wicked Prayer is GREAT! This is another rollicking, two-fisted, high-octane Norman Partridge novel. The whole thing plays out beautifully in your mind and I for one got a prickly feeling all over during a wigged-out scene with some scorpions. There is no superhero-type element at play here. Supernatural, you bet. This is the Crow gone desert rockandroll noir on a dumptruck load of peyote. Put some Calexico or Friends of Dean Martinez on the stereo and settle back into this story and you will not be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars I always enjoy a great read when I have a lot of downtime.......2002-07-26

I took this book with me when I took a flight to Mississippi for eye surgery. I started reading it on the way there, and after I got my surgery, I couldn't stand to read anything with my eyes hurting so bad. I was so disappointed that I could not finish the book right then and there, I was very into the plot from the beginning. The man in the beginning had a lot of mystery behind him and I was left wanting to know so much more. When I was able to start reading again, I could not put this book down.

5 out of 5 stars Sparked an interest in reading again.......2006-06-02

Being a die hard "Crow" fan I may be biased . However, after reading this book I intend to find and read all of "The Crow " books I can find . This book in particular reaches out and sucks you in . It goes back to that angst avenged that the original had so masterfully put out . It does have certain points ( super powers? ) that may turn off fans of the first movie . But if you can separate the first Crow story from the rest I assure you you will love this book and others in the Crow series.

3 out of 5 stars It Was Alright.......2004-08-13

I am a big fan of The Crow, so naturally I had to check it out. All in all, it was a good book. Some parts a little grotesque and the ending a little to short, but all in all a good book. It had me intrested in to try out another Crow series book.

    3 out of 5 stars What Was I Thinking?.......2004-03-27

What was I on with my last review for this book? Anyways, being the 4th book so far in the series, it did manage to add some different elements, like past lives and supernatural forces. I liked the fact that Stephen Lelliot could call upon crows to help him in his journey. What I didn't like though was that the action didn't start until 3/4 of the story. That and the end battle was very confusing and what I could understand, there wasn't enough happening. Also, the villian,"Dirk Temple" seemed like a cousin to the bad guy,"Joseph Lethe" in Lazarus Heart. Too many times for that type of character in my honest opinion. Out of all these books so far, Clash By Night is the best one(in my honest opinion).

3 out of 5 stars an alright book.......2003-03-14

this to me did not seem like a crow book. it was to magical and the crow is only in the book himself for about 15 pages its a alright book but dont read it expecting to see the crow.

    2 out of 5 stars Very disappointed.......2002-05-01

Overall I've enjoyed the storytelling very visual until the end.It just seemed the end was rushed, and was saved for the very last few pages of the book. It left me puzzled I was like "Get out of here, You must be joking all this great storytelling, and it ends in such a tame lame fashion". Did the author have a plane to catch? Too bad all the energy and excitement 3/4 of the book is drained away by the 1/4 ending what a shame.

5 out of 5 stars An indepth look at all aspects of the movie "The Crow"........1996-11-07

"The Crow: The Movie" is a behind-the-scenes look at the complete production of the 1994 hit movie, "The Crow". This book starts out by showing "The Crow"'s origin as a graphic novel and continues through to the completion of the movie. There are also numerous interviews with all members of the cast and crew. The best part of this book is the mini-bibliography of Brandon Lee, who was killed in an accident on the set of the movie. His feelings about this movie, his role and his career are included. This is a fascinating book for all to read, whether you are a fan or not of "The Crow"

5 out of 5 stars Definetly better than the flick.......2000-06-07

I read this book when it first came out and that was quite a while before the movie. I finished the book in about 3 days and when I was finished I figured that this movie would be better than the first...I was wrong. The book was great, went into great detail about everything and had such ironic ending. Watching the movie they cut so much out and changed the ending. If you didn't really like the movie get the book and see how it was all really suppose to be.

4 out of 5 stars better than the movie.......1999-10-30

While the movie succeeded in some great visual candy, it didn't do so well plotwise. All in all, the book is better than the movie. Plus, you don't have to wonder what Ashe is saying.

5 out of 5 stars What the movie should have been!!.......1998-12-03

What the movie lacked in depth, the novelization by Chet Williamson makes up for and then some. After reading the book I couldn't help but think "why wasn't the movie this deep?". I highly recommend anyone that has seen the movie pick up the novelization. I enjoyed the movie, but felt it had too many holes in it. Chet Williamson's rendering of the COA story helps to fill the void left by the movie.
