1 out of 5 stars "Prisoner of The Chrysanthemum Throne"--A Bogus Story.......2007-08-19

First of all,as a Japanese,I will not sit here and watch as an affair of my country is terribly distorted and misunderstood.Let me start by pointing out the most important fact unbeknownst to Western people:The majority of the Japanese people DO NOT sympathize with Princess Masako any more, because we already know the truth all too well.

Although we used to regard her in the early days as an efficient but "unfortunate" princess just as this book claims to be,now almost every Japanese inwardly thinks that she is just a loathesome,power-hungry upstart with gilded academic backgrounds and a seemingly remarkable diplomat's career who married into a highest and noblest family she never really belonged to.We also think that she should be deprived of her title and dismissed from the Imperial Family as soon as possible--not because she is a "modernized" woman who is alien to our society, but simply because she is not doing her duty at all.In fact, also unbeknownst to overseas media, she keeps on betraying the people's expectation for her to live up to her title by refusing to attend almost all the public functions out of faked sickness, seeking only fun, squandering the taxpayers'money without a reflection.

In other words, all she ever does is to pretend that she's so "mentally ill" that she needs "a long rest" and to "shop till she drops" on the people's back as she goes on needless vacations.(For example, she immensely enjoyed her visit to Tokyo Disneyland with her husband and daughter by riding various attractions this March, and shortly after it was reported in the media, there appeared many weblog entries denouncing her act.)
As you know,a real patient of depression or of any other mental illness is never able to go out not only to work, but also to play however hard he or she wants to.Even though there is yet no clear evidence that her illness is false, there is a revealing fact that the Princess has never undergone a thorough mental health check by a third-party doctor, nor has her doctor in charge officially held a press conference to announce the proper diagnosis to this day. With all the inappropriate behaviour of the Princess above in mind,we have come to a conclusion that she is an utterly ineligible Crown Princess,a Marie Antoinette-like tax-spender,a sheer disgrace to our nation and to "the Chrysanthemum Throne" in the true sense of the term.

So the point here is as follows:She is no "prisoner" to be "liberated" at all;all we have here is one delinquent who would universally be dismissed should she be a princess of some Western country, and that Japanese traditions or "the way of the Kunaicho(the Imperial Household Agency)" has nothing to do with the so-called "unfairness" of the way she has been treated. We only think of her as we naturally do,and the Imperial Household Agency has been only doing its job.
Suppose an agency of Royal or Imperial affairs did not try to admonish a troublemaker in the Family,or it did not try to defend their lord in the face of a malicious slander, then of what use would it be?Naturally,if it takes the above actions when needed, that would be NO "violation of human rights" or "violation of freedom of speech" as the author Ben Hills alleged regarding the treatment of Princess Masako and the Kunaicho's protest against his book.
Therefore, all the author's accusations against the Kunaicho and the other members of the Imperial Family are groundless, because those accusations are made on an unsound premise that they should be blamed for their own unique "inhumanity" and "feudalism" that never really exist in this particular case.Needless to say,a tradition should never be judged from an insufficient research or a subjective,narrow-minded viewpoint like the author's,especially when the allegations are untrue.

Finally, please DO NOT ever be deceived by this bogus story of some Imperial oppression of a well-intended,"liberated" individual which never took place, not only for our sake, but also for your own sake, because this is apparently a book of propaganda full of intentional errors designed to undermine Japan's and the Imperial Family's reputation. With Japan being a former Axis and a defeated nation of WWII,it is not uncommon for the rest of the world to demonize the Emperor or the Imperial system of Japan by deliberately depicting it as a thoroughly inhumane existence despite its now-pacifistic nature. So,all wise and conscientious readers out there, stay open-minded,for an ignorant, unsuspecting "good intention" misled by malice could lead to true unfairness such as racism and destruction of a culture that is different from your own.

4 out of 5 stars Heartbreaking........2007-07-27

For a young woman who could have conquered the world to be buried under ridiculous, unreasonable tradition which has no place in this modern world.

1 out of 5 stars Princess Masako.......2007-06-01

Part of the book is interesting, but mostly disappointing me.
Not only many parts are coming from gossip news papers, but also author is influenced by his wife, Mayu Kanamori, notorious anti-Japanese Korean left-wing journalist. She always against the Royal family and the contents of the book seems following her idea.

2 out of 5 stars Sob Sister Stuff.......2007-05-31

I realize Hills didn't have a whole lot of authenicated material for this book, but some of the inaccuracies - well, really! Kids dressing in gangsta clothes in the 70s?!? That's what Hills maintains when Masako first started school in the US.

I was constantly puzzled by the author's efforts to appear unbiased. 'Poor Masako,' was one message. 'Her family background is somewhat suspect, and her father is a social climber. tee hee,' was another (and snide) message. The different in height between the Crown Prince and Crown Princess was also noted. To what end? Hills see-saws back and forth between trying to appear a legitimate, serious author and a gossip columnist.

I wish Hills had spent some time explaining, for us gai-jins, the role and upbringing of the woman in Japanese society. Until very recently, all Japanese female names ended in 'ko,' which means 'child' - Keiko, Masako, Aiko, etc. While this may sound minor, it is indicative of how women are perceived in Japan. (My former husband, who spent a lot of time in Japan, was once chided by a Japanese man for being too polite to women.) It would, I think, help to explain Masako's difficulty in her, IMHO, schizophrenic life.

All in all, if such a book had to be written, I should prefer to have Kitty Kelley tackle the subject. She, at least, is a zippy writer, and this book definitely lacks zip.

5 out of 5 stars It's worth your time....trust me!.......2007-05-27

This has to be one of the greatest books I've read in a long time. I seriously suggest this book to anyone who is looking for an interesting and great book to read.

Radiant color is not merely joyously prevalent in Mexico, it is part of the national psyche. According to this energetic celebration of Mexican style, "the color that floods Mexico's streets and plazas, markets and homes (and the pages of this book) is language and metaphor--a form of communication, deeply bound to experience. Day and night, birth and death, rich and poor, feast and famine: color is always there. Earth, sky, and history conspire to make it so." The profusion of multihued walls, tiles, ceramics, textiles, and folk art that fill the home; the riotous juxtapositions of vivid foods, flowers, supplies, and accessories that comprise the spectacle of the marketplace; the vibrant details that define everything from facades to clothing to handpainted toys--the Mexican obsession with color is everywhere, as is strikingly documented in this lively book. --Amy Handy

Book Description

Basking in sunlight and coursing with energy, Mexico enjoys a unique relationship with color-inspired, intrinsic, inseparable from life itself. This vibrance sings forth in the pages of Mexicolor, the collaborative project of an artist, a photographer, and a writer all in love with the brilliant displays of color seen everywhere in Mexico. Walls washed flamingo pink on top, deep matte blue on the bottom. A green flatbed truck heaped with orange marigolds. A sea of colorful skeletons at a Day of the Dead fiesta. The radiant reds, yellows, purples, and greens of the fruits and vegetables at el mercado. Mexicolor explores Mexico high and low, from colonial towns to dazzling beaches, from traditional ?workshops to contemporary interiors, from open markets to extraordinary homes and inns, uncovering the colorful artistry that permeates everyday life across this vast nation. Mexicolor is an ideal resource for anyone looking to brighten a home, and a beautiful picture book brimming with imagination, creative ideas, and pure pleasure.?

5 out of 5 stars If You Love Color!.......2007-03-25

If you love the bold, life-affirming colors of Mexican houses and interiors but not necessarily the traditional architecture and furnishings of the mexican tradition, this is the book for you! I ordered several books on Mexican interiors and details and this was the best. It gave me great ideas for using bold, bright color in my house without turning it into a hacienda. The book is beautifully designed and the color just blows off the pages. It has in it everything I love about Mexico that is bright, lively, joyous, and enlivening and nothing that is stodgy. As An artist, I found the book irresistable.

i've been to colonial mexico, and i've seen more exciting stuff than what's on this book. also, the pages come appart easily

5 out of 5 stars a great guide.......2006-04-06

I have always loved everything about Mexico, especially their use of color. When I bought my new house I wanted to bring that freedom and joy into my home.

This book was a wonderful guide. Almost every page reminded me to let go and celebrate. There are so many visual feasts and ideas. If you are timid about colors this book will definitely give you a new lease on life.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Summary of Mexican Colors.......2006-02-28

I'm in the process of building on the Maya Riviera so this is important research looking for real ideas. Building in Spanish Colonial style can't be done without some thought given to the brilliant colors of Mexico.

Since I am interested in the home design many of the chapters are not as applicable. Chapters like Folk Art, Toys, wood, ceramics and the marketplace were just not really relevant to me. Prior to that are chapters on the painted wall, Tiles and the Kitchen that are very helpful. Later the book shows pictures of various homes, haciendas, and hotels. Even if I weren't investigating for decorating ideas this is still a coffee table book that I would be very proud to display in my house.

I now have many pages marked for further review and discussions. This is a great representation of Mexican color that I'm glad I own.

4 out of 5 stars A Great Tile Summary.......2006-02-28

I'm in the process of building on the Maya Riviera so this isn't a book read for fun. This is real research looking for real ideas. Building in Spanish Colonial style can't be done without some incorporation of Mexican Tiles. This book is basically 90% pictures and 10% background and history of Mexican Tiles. The background write-up is excellent and gives good history of Talavera and Talavera-Style Tiles. Then it's on to different uses, floors, kitchens, bathrooms, walls and stairs, and patios and gardens.

I'm very simple in the colors I like in homes so these tiles can be "over the top". This book has a lot of these type pictures. It has more tile usage than I've ever seen on exteriors. The kitchen section has huge tile usage but I've seen more attractive usage in other books.

Overall, I did not get any ideas I will definitely use but I did get a different perspective on tile usage. There are definitely pictures I will take back to discuss with my architect and designer which may be incorporated. This book can be consumed in an hour. But it may take many hours of review going over the pictures again and again.

3 out of 5 stars A bit of a let down........2006-01-18

I love Mexican tiles but I felt the book was a bit of a let down. The pictures were a bit small and there wasn't enough information about tilemaking in the book. I think the book would have been much more effective in a larger format where the tiles would have been more impressive. There are some wonderful talavera tile websites on the net for anyone who wants a better overview.

3 out of 5 stars Great content.......2005-08-02

Book has great ideas. Wish it had been hardback. Book binding, does not want to hold together, considering the wear and tear it shall receive. This is also a great book.

5 out of 5 stars AWESOME!!! Fulfilled ALL my expectations!.......2003-04-12

After I bought Masako Takahasi and her husband Tony Cohen's book "Mexicolor", I thought no other book I purchased would EVER compare to that experience. When I discovered "Mexican Tiles", I opened it with fear and trepidation, hoping against all hope, yet hardly daring to believe that it could be even half as good as their first.

But this book is AWESOME!! I think I finally figured out why, after reading Tony Cohen's book "On Mexican Time": these people simply ADORE Mexico, and it comes through in everything they do. All of the wonder and breathless anticipation and teary-eyed beauty that I feel and am so hopelessly unqualified to express when I am either in Mexico or adding to my collection of artesania, Tony vividly portrays in his prose and Masako captures with her camera.

As for subject matter, I LOVE Talavera tiles, Talavera pottery, Talavera ANYTHING, because they are so INCREDIBLY Mexican, and this book is simply PAGE after GORGEOUS PAGE of Talavera-lined kitchens, bathrooms, stairs, floors...you name it, it's tiled. If you at all appreciate ethnic interior design or Mexican handicrafts, this is an AWESOME book!!!

The thoroughly updated Second Edition of this atlas is an indispensable reference for anyone performing or interpreting pediatric EEGs. It contains more than 300 illustrations--over 100 new to this edition--depicting normal and abnormal EEG tracings from infants, children, and adolescents. Succinct legends highlight the distinguishing features of each pattern and the clinical significance of abnormalities. This edition includes the latest advances in EEG and the full spectra of disorders requiring EEG for diagnosis and management. The extensive section on normal EEGs--grouped into awake, drowsy, sleep, and arousal--will sharpen the reader's concept of the limits of normality in each age group. Abnormal EEGs are grouped into epileptiform and nonepileptiform patterns. The authors present both typical and atypical examples of common and difficult-to-recognize abnormalities. The book also includes critical discussions of the role of EEG in diagnosis and management of specific disorders. The final chapter is a concise guide to recording technique.

A child's delight in a new pair of shoes is the same all over the world, whether the shoes are patent-leather sandals, straw alpargatas, deerskin moccasins, or wooden clogs.

For Mako, a little Japanese girl, the new shoes were clogs painted with red lacquer that shone beautifully. This is the story of what happened after she cracked the new clogs playing the weather-telling game and so longed for a bright, shiny new pair to replace them that she almost did a dishonest thing.

My daughters 6 and 2 request this book so often and still I never tire of reading it. I began the search for high quality childrens books when I could barely get through one sitting of 'Strawberry Shortcake Strikes Again!' or the equivalent. This book is a joy for reader and readee;)

    5 out of 5 stars A childhood favorite!.......2006-04-25

It's lovely to see this book is back in print. I received a copy as a birthday gift when I was 5 years old (it was a new publication then!) and continue to treasure that same volume today. I also received a real pair of clogs from Japan about the same time, so the story took on even more meaning for me. I have an opportunity to teach a workshop in Japan in May about how our experiences are reflected in our artworks -- and this beautifully illustrated story which taught me so much about integrity, as well as Japanese culture, will be an important reference in my presentation. Simple lessons, so important to a child's character, kindly taught, DO last a lifetime! This is an important book for your child's library.

My mother recently mailed to me a 40 year-old copy of "A Pair of Red Clogs" that I had when I was small. I wept in recognition of the poignant, exquisite illustrations of this young girl's life in Japan which so delighted me as a very young child. I read it now to my two year-old son, who asks questions about "the weather-telling game" that cracked Mako's clogs. The story is character forming, but it's the illustrations that last a lifetime in memory.

        Book Description

Calligraphy is often regarded as the purest manifestation of an artist's inner character and level of cultivation, as well as the expression of his soul, thoughts, and feelings. This lovely book presents some fifty-eight Japanese works, almost all calligraphy, from the remarkable collection formed over the last forty years by Sylvan Barnet and William Burto, literary scholars who became enraptured by the Japanese art of the brush.

Spanning more than a thousand years from the Nara period (710-794) through the nineteenth century, the material includes sublime early sutras, or transcriptions of the Buddha's discourses; an extraordinary mandala that is perhaps the finest example of its kind in the West; seminal works by such renowned figures as My¯oe, K¯oetsu, Mus¯o, Konoe, and Daishin; engaging letters and poems that illuminate courtly life; and powerful graphic statements by Zen monk-artists.

The opening essay by Sylvan Barnet and William Burto, which is directed to a non-Japanese reader, gives an illuminating look at the ways in which Japanese calligraphy can be appreciated. Miyeko Murase's introduction provides a rich commentary on the Japanese calligraphic scripts and scribes and an insightful overview of the society and world in which this art flourished.

This book is the catalogue for an exhibition at The Metropolitan Museum of Art from October 1, 2002, to March 2, 2003.

        Book Description

Japanese is a notoriously difficult language to learn. There may be no easy way to learn it, but there are ways that are easier than others.

Breakthrough Japanese is a lively, reader-friendly book that amplifies and reinforces the skills gained from more conventional textbooks. Designed to stimulate or rekindle a learner's curiosity, it is packed with activities that make language speaking fun. At the same time, learners at all levels,
from beginning to advanced, will find many useful expressions and speaking strategies throughout its pages.

Author Hitomi Hirayama is the director of Japanese Lunch, a popular language school in Tokyo. Her teaching methods focus primarily on communication: she explains fundamental points of grammar, but with a succinctness and clarity that even advanced students will appreciate. She combines these with
crossword puzzles, word games, practice conversations, proverb practice, and kanji games that make her book perfect for use in the classroom or, equally, for self-study.

Hirayama makes it easier for students to finally grasp the "big concepts" like the difference between wa and ga. She also has a unique way of introducing ideas that are applicable to any Japanese conversation, such as what she calls the "large-to-small rule" of sentence structure, and the way that
word order in a sentence is basically up to the speaker. Her method instills confidence and helps readers take their Japanese skills to the next level.

New to the language? An old Japan-hand? Someone who has had some study, but then forgotten it all? Regardless, Breakthrough Japanese will make the language seem less formidable and more fun.

5 out of 5 stars Very good book - but a little spotty.......2005-12-10

I should say first off that beginners will definitely get more from this than intermediates - by way of example, there is an entire chapter on the difference between "shiru" and "wakaru". definitely an important distinction, but also one that most intermediate students have dealt with many times before. Likewise, the chapter on "pocket phrases" and "capsule Japanese" will be familiar territory to anyone who regularly uses (or tries to) this beautiful language.

Now, before coming off as too harsh, there really are some nice parts of this book, particularly in the sections on idiomatic usage and colloquial expressions. These would make perfect textbook supplements, reminders that the language is not always formal or straightforwardly grammatically parsed. Intermediates CAN get useful info out of the book, albeit at the sacrifice of three or four less chapters than beginners. I LOVED the "Water Words" chapter (idioms using the work "mizu") and the section on body part idioms (even though I already knew a few of those, too). Here's where example sentances are so important, and this little book does not dissapoint in that regard - casual constructions like "I thought we were friends! Please don't hesitate to tell me..." Sounds useful, right?

All in all, best for second / third year students, useful for fourth and beyond. Still recommended, if only to break away from textbook Japanese (why don't any of my friends talk like that?).

Oh yes - I'd like to add that a GOLDMINE of REAL WORLD Japanese is in the book "Expressive Japanese", which Amazon sells, but oddly doesn't show up as related to any of the Kodansha material - although it's tougher than this book, all of the examples there are from actual soap operas or street conversations or magazine articles or manga. It makes a nice addition to this book, albeit a more challenging one. Ganbaro!

5 out of 5 stars A fun, conversational approach to some quirks of Japanese.......2004-12-01

The Daily Yomiuri's "Pera-Pera Penguin's 5-minute Japanese Class" articles are a friend to all English-speaking Japan residents, and Hitomi Hirayama's fun and useful mini-seminars are eagerly awaited. She has a flair for making some of the more arcane aspects of conversational Japanese accessible and possibly even sensible.

From these columns the best 20 of her articles have been culled and collected into "Breakthrough Japanese: 20 mini lessons for better conversation." Inside are such perennial stumpers as the difference between "wakarimasen" and "shirimasen," the subtleties of "hai" beyond translating it as "yes," that elusive particle "ga" as well as a host of little hints to smooth daily life. There is a definite conversation approach, as opposed to a grammar approach, and much of this is "non-classroom" Japanese, such as advice on when to drop particles and such.

The format of the lessons is interesting, including puzzles, pictures and witticisms. The author has injected her own personality into the language learning, as the best teachers will do. All of the lessons are supported by quizzes and plenty of practical work. Each lesson can be done on the fly, and the book is a great supplemental lunch time study aid. Of course, all of the Japanese is in kana as well as romaji.

The level is suitable for advanced beginners to low-advanced level students of Japanese. A fresh beginner should probably get the hang of kana and basic sentence structure before diving into "Breakthrough Japanese," but they will soon be a level to appreciate and make use of Hirayama-sensei's style. Now if only her school, Japanese Lunch, was in my town! I would sign up for a course right away! I hope that this is the beginning of a series, and that more "Pera-Pera Penguin" articles will be collected for future volumes.

5 out of 5 stars The most used book in my kitchen!.......2006-02-12

The information is easy to follow and ingredients aren't so obscure that you can't find them.
I received this book as a gift almost ten years ago and it is still the most used cookbook in my kitchen.
This was my first Japanese cookbook and now it's one of eight yet it's the one I go to first whenever I'm cooking Japanese.

        4 out of 5 stars Good Book--But Beginner Beware!.......2000-04-29

I bought this book while I was in Japan thinking it would be an easy introduction to Japanese cooking that an inspired but unskilled beginner like me could take on--that was a mistake! The book has lots of detailed description and ideas, including illustrations, but the author certainly doesn't cut corners for simplicity. Traditional Japanese home cooking takes time, preparation and practice, and for the most part the recipes in this book are no exception. However, if you're a fairly experienced cook already, and want to get a taste of what Japanese cuisine in all about, then this book is probably what you're looking for.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to use, and a great way to start cooking Japanese!.......1999-08-27

This is a great book to get started with. It gives wonderful descriptions of the various ingredients, and it's instructions are easy to follow.
