Narrow Minded Point of View.......2007-01-03
This book is very preachey and not the way we intend to teach our young daughter about the all inclusive love of God. It is very narrow minded, and it's language is offensive from p.1. The idea of a daily devotion is a good one, but the content has made me pull this one from her shelf.
The One Year Book of Devotions for Girls.......2006-02-25
Great book, really good for kids 5-10, Bible scripture and the stories really hit home and make a point. A great start to get your kid thinking about God first thing
Devotions for girls.......2005-08-21
This book I got for my granddaughter and she loves it. There are 3 other girls and her that are having their own Bible study while the adults do theirs and they are having a great time!!
Yipes! Check out April 11!.......2005-05-13
Not for my nine year old daughter thank you very much! This *was* intended for ages 6-10. However, the devotion on April 11 deals with an topic not intended for 6-10 year olds. I don't know what the publisher was thinking! I'll be reading the rest of this (and tearing out pages) before my daughter does another devotion in the book.
Not recommended.
A good book for girls!.......2003-02-21
I am 12. I am really too old for this book, but it is good anyway. Good stories, wonderful Bible passages, questions, memory verses, and a key thought make this book great. While I am really too old for it, I happen to like it. Pick up this book today!

unbelieveable--historical--exciting.......2007-03-16
very well written. interesting historical account of artists and their methods and subjects. have never seen a greater accumulation of beautiful images, colorful-exiting-romantic portraits. full of 'old time' detail and glamour. hard to put down.
Highly Recommended insight into Mexican Culture.......2007-02-12
I highly recommend the picture book on Mexican Calendar Girls. The author really did her homework and touched on an aspect of Mexican Popular Art that played on cultural symbols. From La Adelita to La Malinche and even the venerated Virgen de Guadalupe, this artwork found in kitchens, neighborhood tienditas or bakeries evoked an idealized Mexico and its various viewpoints of womenhood. These images are the cultural equivalent of the Norman Rockwell paintings that evoked an idealized North American culture to generations. Angela Villaba hit a homerun with her book as far as my family was concerned. I gave it to my mother who is an educational advocate for multicultural education here in the Southwest and she could not put the book down.

Book Description
Journey through the calendar year with three top quilt designers and teachers. These special friends have designed a quilt pattern for every month and combined their diverse styles to create unique and exciting new designs. They also share fabric selection ideas, how-to sections on Stack-n-Whack and Appli-bond, and techniques and tips to use all year round. Joan Shay's designs feature her easy and popular three-dimensional Appli-bond method for creating flowers, birds, and fish. Bethany Reynolds presents several fun, new Stack-n-Whack designs -- a method that has taken the quilt world by storm. Karen Combs adds her special insight with quilts of illusion that delight the senses. From enchanting applique to dazzling patchwork, the great variety of projects offered will bring quilting excitement throughout the year. AUTHORBIO: Karen Combs is an internationally-known quilter, teacher, author, and designer whose students nominated her for Quilt Teacher of the Year in 1995 and 2000. In high demand as a teacher (she began teaching quilting in 1989), Karen encourages her students, makes learning fun, and makes the complex easy to understand! Karen is fascinated with optical illusions in quilts, a fascination that has become the subject of her many workshops, magazine articles, and books. AUTHORBIO: Joan, who was taught to sew on a Singer treadle machine by her grandmother, has been a quilter for many years. She has her own pattern company, Petal Play, which she operates from her home in Massachusetts. In addition, she has taught and lectured extensively throughout the country. She has appeared on television on the PBS show "Quilting from the Heartland" with Sharlene Jorgenson, and on the HGTV program "Simply Quilts" with Alex Anderson. AUTHORBIO: Bethany Reynolds is best known as the originator of Stack-n-Whack, but her design interests don't stop there. She has a knack for finding ways to get great results with less work, and she loves sharing her tricks with quilters worldwide. At home on the coast of Maine, Bethany and her husband, Bill, produce a line of specialty rulers and patterns under their BSR Design Inc. label. REVIEW: The Midwest Book Review says: 'In 3 Quilters Celebrate The 4 Seasons: By the Calendar Girls, Karen Combs, Bethany Reynolds, Joan Shay (three famous quilting professionals) collaborate to provide their specialties showcasing over a dozen quilt projects emphasizing diverse patterns and styles and approaches, providing a diversity of original styles. The color photos are wonderful embellishments.'

Wow!.......2004-04-21
I am floored by the 3-D Appli-bond of Joan's quilts as it is something I have never seen before but have to say that the three ladies work well together. I have seen Optical illions and the magic stack-n-whack before but have never attempted to try them. Not often I get to learn three new techniques all in one book. So often, I purchase a book and think it is beautiful but too difficult for me to do - not this one! It is definately full of beautiful and new ideas but looks easy with all the detailed instructions.

Finally: Someone Who Gets It
Adults may mean well, but do they really get everything you’re facing as a teenager? The pressure to drink and party, cheat on that test, or give in to that guy? How about the devastation of losing a friend, parents divorcing, or low self-esteem? Who can better relate than your peers? This Is Now is a devotional written by your peers across the country who face the exact same things you do. God wants you to find encouragement and support through one another “that they might be called trees of righteousness” (Isaiah 61:3, KJV). Brief entrées and rich Scripture verses are packed with hope and wisdom to guide you through these challenging years.
This Is Life—
the Real Deal
Nobody said these years would be easy. Or maybe someone did—but it was probably an adult who doesn’t get it. Now, in this 365-day devotional, teens just like you come together from around the world to offer guidance through your toughest questions and situations. The entries are genuine—solidly built on the Word of God.
“Why do we look at the girl next to us and wish we had her hair, nose, or thighs? Did God make a mistake when He made you or me? No way! We are expressions of His ingeniously creative mind.” —CT
“When I got older; I wasn’t so sure of myself anymore. I wanted to grow up, have a career, get married…but I still wanted to climb trees, run, and play.” —KN
“Satan tells me things like, 'You don’t look pretty' or 'Your friends don’t really care about you.' I think these are lies that most girls face. So what do we do with them?” —BPR
“This wasn’t the first time I had vomited a meal. It was just that, well, I ate too much. I wanted to take it back. I didn’t think I was fat; I just wanted to be thinner than I was.” —MJ
Story Behind the Book
“The teen years make up one of the most challenging and exciting time periods in anyone’s life. Teens are faced with temptations most adults either don’t understand or have forgotten about. For the one committed to Christ, pressures are even greater. They look for encouragement, support, and belonging from their peers. Sadly, much of what is found is divisive and destructive. So I figured: If teens are intent on learning from their peers, why not give them incredible peer role models? A book written by teens for teens in devotional format will be an exciting tool for spurring spiritual growth among teens!”

What a great concept!
Teens writing to teens, yet I am 51 years old and I am inspired by its content. Keep these fresh ideas coming.
Open book on personal struggles.......2006-06-27
This book is top shelf. The girls really open up and tell you about their personal struggles and give inspiration that helps. It's written by teenage girls, but should be read by all.
Devoted fan.......2006-06-23
We know two of the wonderful girls who participated in this book. It's been a great way to share the word of God with other girls. The many topics the devotional covers are important for both teens and their families. We have given quite a few of these books away to cousins and friends. The author, Patti Hummel, has put together a great collection from the young contributors.
Real Life Advice.......2006-06-22
I remember (way back when) being a teenager and feeling totally alone with all the conflicts the usual teenage girl goes through. I didn't feel like I could turn to my parents or teachers, and I didn't always confide in my friends for fear of being thought a geek or nerd. I cannot tell you how much I wish I had this book back then. THIS IS NOW confronts, without fear, the real-life issues of a teenage girl. Many are quite appropriate for boys, too. The advice and help given is not from some parent or teacher (which is usually discounted immediately by teens) but by their peers who can relate first hand to life's many confusing and frustrating situations. Uplifting, heartwarming, comforting and encouraging, these well-written daily devotionals are a must for every family with teenagers, or soon to be teenagers.
Wonderful gift for all the teenage girls in your family! .......2006-06-21
This book touches on many of the difficult challenges and issues teenage girls face. It was written by teenage girls from all over the United States, who share their personal experiences from their Christian viewpoint, for teenage girls, with one devotion for each day of the year. Each devotion is followed by a brief Scripture verse. I have given this lovely gift to each of my teenage nieces, neighbors, and my son's girlfriend. For those who might be a little too young for some of the topics, I gave it to their moms to give to their daughters when their moms feel they are ready. I wish someone had given me a book like this when I was a teenager!

Kevin Cameron is one of the most widely read motorcycle journalists in the world--for reasons that this collection makes immediately and undeniably clear. Here are the feature articles and columns that have made Cameron a must-read for motorcycle aficionados: stories of the racing life; interviews with top-notch racers; profiles of builders and engineers (like John Britten); accounts of changes in the racing world; analyses of riding techniques and winning technology; reports of races; and popular pieces about engine and suspension theory. With short introductions to each piece, Cameron puts his on-the-spot writing on motorcycle racing into context, and offers a quick, clear history of the best on bikes.

Cycle fan.......2007-09-25
Having read Kevin Cameron over the years it is great to relive those articles. The TZ Yamahas were great machines and its great to remember a simpler time of racing with well told articles.
Clear like glass, crystal etc........2007-09-18
What a great book! Kevin Cameron is the clearest technical writer I know of, and my purchase was a no brainer. I know of no one else who can make the inner workings of an internal combustion engine leap to full-colour life with incredible clarity and detail, and do it so effortlessly that you don't even realise how smoothly the images leap up and you see his point with no deductive effort on your part. The book has sections on racing (insightful, but a bit slow if you're not American), racers (very interesting reading about some not-so-famous, but interestingly driven characters), mechanics (haven't gotten that far down the book yet) and inner workings (about the minutiae of the engines, my favourite section, both from Cycle World and in this book).
If you're even slightly into technical texts about motorcycles, you must have this book. KC rocks!
Genius technology writer.......2007-07-21
Racers who want to climb the sport's greasy pole need the basics: skill, will, energy, luck, focus, money and opportunity. Comparable skills are vital in every phase of racing --machine choice, tuning, tire selection, maintenance, logistics, acquiring sponsorship, managing stress. Another helpful ingredient rises above almost all others: a mentor, sitting patiently alongside, to make sure that we understand what is going on and what to do about it most effectively.
Enter Kevin Cameron with TDC, tracing his racing experience over a 35-year career as perhaps the most knowledgeable and capable man in the field, certainly among its finest writers. Individuals may exceed his skills in narrow areas but no one has assembled the 'package' Cameron brings to the task. The book is a four-part selection of 51 of his writings in CYCLE WORLD from 1973-2005, with current, brief introductions, and helps us understand why he is essential reading for serious enthusiasts.
In his first section, THE RACING LIFE, Cameron analyzes where most racers are coming from: privateers with limited means, the moments and signposts that created today's scene (e.g. 1974, year of the 'slick'), the art of crashing, the two-stroke/four-stroke conundrum, frames, suspensions, disk brakes (remember drums?), pioneering riders, some of the appalling incidents that doomed many racing efforts. Ever slept in a van, worked 36 hours straight fueled by coffee and junk food? He has. You can, um, smell it on the page.
With his second grouping, RACERS, he appraises the great riders--attitudes, character, what enabled them to win: Mick, Wayne, Eddie, Freddie, KR, Kevin. Even if you don't know racing's past greats, their strengths and weaknesses, rendered insightfully by Cameron, resonate today throughout the sport--Colin and Casey, Nicky and Vale. New names and faces, sure, but similar human nature propelling the agony and ecstasy, the triumphs and disasters.
MOGULS, MAVENS AND MECHANICS examines some great characters such as Soichiro Honda, John Britten, Jeremy Burgess, Robin Tuluie, Robert Muzzy, Eraldo Ferraci. These are not sketches but insights into the characters, behaviors, skills and motivations that drove these men. He understands not just their external, public personas, but their minds and hearts.
In INNER WORKINGS, the last selection, Cameron returns to his roots: what the machine is doing, how to understand it. He has the uncanny ability to reach down to molecular levels to explain what is happening inside machinery and convey it with dazzling simplicity. Anyone can write turgid, complex descriptions of complicated physical processes, and many do. Few can render esoterica in simple, elegant terms comprehensible to average minds. No wonder the NEW YORK TIMES turns to Cameron, often. We're still not plumbing his depths: he's expert in many areas, including aviation and the amazing radials of WWII.
Anyone who has ever raced, who is racing or who intends to race, in any serious area of motorsports at any level, or just go to the races, or merely watch them on TV, must absorb TDC. You'll learn more in this one book than in decades at the track, at $26.95 (retail) the least expensive learning and life wisdom you'll ever find. It is The Word. Cameron is motorsports' national treasure and our essential mentor.
A Trip Into Technology's Finest Points.......2007-07-02
Like Peter Egan's Leanings series of books (and Side Glances collections), TDC is a compilation of Kevin Cameron's Cycle World columns of the same name. For those unfamiliar, Cameron is a literal engineering genius and it shows month after month in his works (or page after page here, as the case may be). At times though, his writing style can become a bit overwhelming even for an adept mechanic to ingest. He is hardly to blame though as he prides himself on tackling subjects that are simply mind boggling. Readers should expect an information overload as nearly each and every page of this book digs into the most intricate mechanical processes and somehow manages to make sense of them.
Cameron has a knack for exploring technologies not only current, but also in their inception and race applications. It isn't uncommon for him to take a look at a mechanism that comes as standard equipment on today's bikes then to jump back to the earliest records of its inception (be it military or civilian), discuss the concept's trial and error evolution, get into how it affected race-bikes in the early 1980's, then relate it back to today's stock iteration. And all of this is a single paragraph of one article.
It is clear his thirst for knowledge is rivaled only by his desire to educate others in what he's uncovered. But realize that unlike Egan's works, this can hardly be considered light reading. Cameron rarely spends time penning fluff or downplaying advanced concepts so that younger readers/ beginners can follow along. His columns dive right into the technicalities and continue to pull the reader along whether they're ready or not. I often find myself reading a paragraph over and over in attempt to separate the flood of interesting facts presented into smaller bits. Having KC's works chronologically organized into a single volume turns a solid monthly editorial into a piece of reference literature worthy of any coffee table; Whether it belongs to a meachanic, rider, or otherwise.

Better Than a Visit to the Coca-Cola Museum in Atlanta.......2003-08-05
The Sparkling Story of Coca-Cola will delight all those who would like to know the origins of the world's favorite soft drink and see many delightful early examples of advertising and promotional materials. One of my favorite museums with a commercial focus is the Coca-Cola Museum in Atlanta. I was prepared to be disappointed with this book, assuming that it would have less material that I found at the museum. Instead, I found The Sparking Story of Coca-Cola to be much more detailed, easier to follow and with higher quality graphics than in the museum.
The people who will be disappointed in this book are those who want to follow Coca-Cola's progress in detail from 1935 on. The book is a little sketchy for the last 68 years, but wonderfully detailed before that.
The historical side of the book captures the development of carbonated soft drinks in drug stores from medicinal mineral waters and then connects how the formula for Coca-Cola emerged. Anyone who has wanted to understand about the cocaine and caffeine in the original formula will probably have their thirst for knowledge slaked. There also plenty of educated guesses about what the rest of the ingredients are now.
The book goes on to explain the transition into distributing the syrup around the country, bottling and supermarket distribution. I found all of these explanations to be thorough, without being dense, and interesting without trying to be cute.
The illustrations are what really made the book for me. In Coca-Cola's earliest days, the company was a pioneer in mass advertising. Although a fountain glass of Coca-Cola only cost five cents, that was a lot of money when the product first came out. With a sure instinct, the advertising portrayed attractive, healthy upper class young women with the product. These images appeared on trays, calendars and hand-outs. The quality of the reproductions is very fine. You can then see how these illustrations gravitated towards women celebrities and eventually towards ordinary looking young women. During times of trouble, boys were included.
I also enjoyed the discussions of how Coca-Cola handled the challenges of sugar shortages and the Depression while maintaining its quality image and integrity.
While many books about a product like Coca-Cola would ignore all competitors, this one has some material on the early soft drink makers like Hires for root beer and Schweppes. There's also some material on the challenge of Pepsi-Cola beginning in the 1930s. These references enriched the book for me.
Those who are looking for an explanation of the Roberto Goizueta era at Coca-Cola will find little information, except for a discussion of the introduction of the failed new Coke. Bottling development and international expansion similarly lack much information beyond the initiation of both activities.
So, as you can see, this is more than a coffee table book . . . and less than a complete history. It's just right for those who want to know more about one of their favorite beverages and enjoy the nostalgia of seeing interesting memorabilia from an earlier time.
After you finish this book, think about other symbols that you relate to that once had a slightly "fast" image. Is that same image involved now? Is the change good or bad from your perspective?
When you are in Atlanta, all those who enjoyed this book will probably also enjoy the museum there . . . especially tasting the flavors of Coca-Cola products from around the world.
The Sparkling Story of Coca-Cola.......2003-01-08
I recieved this wonderful book as a Christmas gift. What an enjoyable read! Full of enjoyable tidbits that every Cokeaholic would love to know. From the history of Soda Fountain beginnings to the pop culture icon Coca-Cola has become. The Sparkling Story of Coca-Cola covers it all. A visual feast of historic photographs and illustrations accompany the well written text.
