Customer Reviews:
Not much here in my opinion.......2006-03-04
Moose Peterson recycles information he's written for magazine articles into this book about wildlife photography. Some of the pictures in his book are good, others are just ordinary.
The worst thing about this book is the poor grammar and spelling. Doesn't this guy have an editor?
I was really hoping for more from someone who is supposed to be a world famous wildlife photographer.
There is some information on digital here so I gave it two stars.
Moose Peterson's Guide to Wildlife Photography.......2004-08-27
Moose Peterson does a great job of addressing birds and mammals, the exclusive foci of this wildlife book. No other non-mammals, such as insects, butterflies, moths, reptiles, etc., are included.
The first part of the book details gear necessary and/or desirable for doing wildlife photography. Peterson discusses camera bodies, a wide variety of lenses, and other accessories, such as flash, tripods, and filters.
Peterson also addresses the hot topic du jour: film vs. digital imagery. He describes the advantages and disadvantages of each, and provides tips and recommendations for both conventional film camera users and digital camera users.
A heavy emphasis on exposure comprises the second part of the book. In a nontechnical way, Peterson writes about making the subject "pop"--how to give the subject life, so that it is not flat or dull. He provides many tips and ideas for accomplishing this.
Third is a section on getting close physically to the subject. Peterson advocates for the value of knowing the biology--the culture and habitat and behavior--of the animals to be photographed. In addition, he addresses the ethics involved in approaching wildlife and the treatment of living photographic subjects. He promotes taking no action that threatens the welfare of the subjects in any way, even if that means you do not capture the image. I appreciate his value for the life of wildlife.
The final two chapters in the books consist of stories about Peterson photographing birds and mammals. As I read through his tales, I could imagine him telling these during a slide presentation. It is common to hear them during a slide show, but rare to read such chatty stories in a book. The inclusion of this feature of the book makes the book somewhat unique.
Peterson uses many good and sharp photographs to illustrate the book. With very few exceptions, the captions only include the animal's name and the camera, lens, and film used. I would have appreciated meatier captions to tie information from the text to the images.
This book is not really a how-to book. Peterson writes in a readable way about approaches and techniques, but stops short of telling the reader how to do things. There is, however, extensive use of "field tips" in the margins that provide pointers for the reader's use.
For me, this book is not one that I would use much for reference. It made for enjoyable, not-too-technical reading one time through, however. His writing style is palatable to a non-techie such as I am.
I was disconcerted to read what I believe are two geographical mistakes. In the first sentence of the introduction to the book, Peterson describes climbing a mountainside in "the Yukon Territory of Alaska." I was left wondering whether he was climbing in Canada (Yukon Territory) or in the United States (Alaska). Near the end of the book, he reports photographing northern fur seals on St. Paul Island "which lies off the coast of Nova Scotia." Did he really photograph northern fur seals in the Atlantic Ocean off Nova Scotia, or did he photograph them on the St. Paul Island of the Pribilof Islands in the Bering Sea of the Pacific Ocean off the west coast of Alaska? I suspect it's the latter and not the former.
Schmoozing with Moose.......2003-11-30
This book is aimed at the photographer who understands the processes of taking photographs and now wants to apply these processes to taking wildlife photographs. Peterson, a famous wildlife photographer, expresses his opinions on what it takes to get good and great wildlife pictures.
The first third of the book is dedicated to explaining what equipment is necessary for taking wildlife pictures. It is clear that the author considers a camera capable of accepting a wide variety of lenses, and some really long (and expensive) lenses, essential for this purpose.
The next chapter of the book is devoted to techniques he considers necessary to make a picture "pop", i.e., attract a viewer's attention. He discusses lighting, color, exposure and backgrounds. The third section of the book talks about getting close to wildlife subjects and the fourth chapter looks at ten pictures of birds and describes the circumstances surrounding their taking, and the fifth chapter does the same with pictures of mammals.
I imagine that reading this book would be much like sitting around with Moose in a bull session and talking about wildlife photography, with all the advantages and disadvantages that might include. For a written work this book needed a good editor, not only to correct grammatical errors and typos, but also to correct all the repetitions, contradictory advice and non-sequiturs. Also, notwithstanding statements to the contrary, Peterson is clearly biased in favor of digital photography with Nikon cameras. For example, the title suggests that the book is applicable to both digital and film, but Moose spends 8 pages laying out why he believes digital photography is better than film, He also spends a page describing why he prefers a particular Nikon lens over others, even though the features on which he bases his preference are only available from Nikon. On the other hand, in discussing the advantages of digital he makes no mention of the use of the histogram, a feature that several other wildlife photographers consider to be the most important benefit of digital cameras.
At the same time some of the material isn't presented by any other author in this detail. The twenty-nine pages devoted to getting close to the quarry are singular. While the chapters on the author's pictures may contain a lot of details that will be of little use to most folks, they do convey the importance of planning and patience in wildlife photography.
If you are looking for a book that will teach you fundamentals, like the nature of exposure, look at something else, like John Shaw's "Nature Photography Field Guide" or Art Morris' "the Art of Bird Photography". But if you are an experienced photographer, looking to glean a few tips about wildlife photography that you may not have heard before, and willing to put up with a rough and ready but expert photographer, you will probably enjoy this book.

Beautiful Photo's - But Just too small.......2000-08-18
This cloth bound book displays some of Beken's best work, the only reason I give it three stars is that it is just too small. The beautiful sepia colours of his art and majestic sailing ships of the bygone era are not done justice by the tiny reproductions in this work, considering its' cost.
At 8" x 5" it is almost too small to be a coffee table book.
Anyway, the book displays the famous yachts of the era from the 1880's to pre-WWII with small dialogs before each chapter to explain the stage and history of sailing at Cowes in each era, from the turn of the century (1800-1900), pre-WWI, Post WWI, pre WWII. It gives little history of the photographer, and his methods.
If you own any Bekken prints, it will hold a little interest to you, but you will be disappointed in a album that could have been done so much better.
Book Description
Written and compiled by a veteran United Press International photographer and editor, PICTURE THIS! tells the stories behind the stories--and how some of the most iconic and revealing news pictures of the late 20th century came to be. There are powerful photographs of the Civil Rights struggles, the Vietnam War, and great moments in sports, entertainment, and politics. PICTURE THIS! follows the development of the wire picture services, the storied competition between smaller but scrappier UPI and its far larger competitor, Associated Press, and how UPI's 11.5 million-picture library ended up in a Pennsylvania cave, owned by Bill Gates's Corbis.
Customer Reviews:
And picture it you can!.......2007-09-24
When a newspaper goes out of business, it's sometimes as if it never existed and everything it did is buried, rarely to be exhumed again unless it is some researcher.
Wire service people have labored in obscurity for decades and only in recent decades have credit lines become common for photos in newspapers or other print sources. Even Magazine credits were sometimes astonishingly small.
There is a UPI still in business, but it is unrelated to the great wire service that competed with the powerful Associated Press. But the photographs made by UPI photographers and others for UPI will live on in the Corbis library, much of it buried in cold underground storage.
What this book has done is to reach down into that vault and pull out some of the more memorable pictures from the UPI days when it covered the world. The names of the photographers may not be familiar except to those in the trade, but they are among the best as these images demonstrate.
An excellent book, well-written and well-edited. More please.
A world of pictures.......2007-02-05
If you like pictures - news pictures that tell a story even after 70 years - you'll love "Picture This! The Inside Story and Classic Photos of UPI Newspictures." If you like good captions that flesh out the images with background information, you'll love Picture This!. The book of 238 black-and-white photographs, written and compiled by Gary Haynes with a foreword by Walter Cronkite, showcases the work of UPI's band of aggressive, talented and serious photojournalists who chronicled the life of the world in images that resonate even after 70 years.
You'll recognize the world-famous photograph of a saluting John-John Kennedy following the funeral of his father and discover the photo of the Dionne quintuplets and the image of George H.W. Bush campaigning in a Chicago suburb.
I have no vested interest in whether you buy Picture This! and never met Gary Hayes. But, I was a newsman with United Press International for 18 years in four states and I am, obviously, partial to UPI and have a sense of the toil and trouble UPI photographers encountered in chronicling news events.
A word of warning, however. When you try leafing through this book with the intention of spending only a few minutes, you will find yourself stopping to peruse an image, reading a caption and re-discovering, and perhaps discovering, forgotten events. Invariably, you will ask yourself: What was I doing at that moment in time, captured by a UPI photojournalist.
Unfortunately, Picture This! does not have the glitz and glitter of a huge table top book. Perhaps, however, that is the charm of a wire service book that underscores the art of black-and-white photographs and the talents of UPI photographers worldwide. These pictures and these photographers never tried to be pretty or charming, only tell a true, accurate story.
An outstanding survey essential for any student of journalism........2006-12-14
PICTURE THIS! THE INSIDE STORY AND CLASSIC PHOTOS OF UPI NEWSPICTURES comes from a veteran syndicate editor and photographer who pairs the best of UPI news photos with an insider's account of the stories behind them. But it's more than just a gathering of key photos linked to major news stories: it follows the wire service industry as a whole, providing a history of its development and evolution, competition with other news services, and how its library ended up in a Pennsylvania cave. An outstanding survey essential for any student of journalism.

We lived through UPI's ups and downs.......2006-11-16
My husband worked for UPI Newspictures from 1961 to l981 and shared the ups and downs of UPI and Gary Haynes has captured the story of the wonderful photographers and their work who were always out numbered by the AP and were able to compete and win many stories by sheer determination. UPI Newspictures had a great planner,Charley McCarty who out thought the oposition and two fantastic photo editors Ted Majeski and Larry Desantis who could find the best images on the film they edited. This books shows some of the photos they found on the film made by the hardworking photographers who never were willing to let the AP beat them. Thanks to Gary Haynes for putting it all in this book.
All through the eye of a camera!.......2006-11-15
We all take the camera for granted ;but someone having a camera availible at the right time and place;has meant that memorable moments and events have been recorded for posterity. There are many books that have tried to sum up the best photographs of the Century;some are very average, some are very good, and some are excellent;this one is that type.
I often wondered which I would choose if I had to pick 3 favorite photographs.It is very difficult;but three that come to mind immediately,and I don't really know why,are;
The Marines raising the flag on Iwo Jima ,as the best photograph from
the Second World War.
Oswald being shot in Dallas, probably since iI saw it "live" on TV.
and,
Marilyn Monroe singing Happy Birthday to President Kennedy, again
watched "live" on TV.
Anyway those are my picks, but with a little more thought,I could think of others just as momentous;such as the collasping of the World Trade Center on 9/11;which I watched being built;when I worked in the next block at the corner of Broadway Ave. & Nassau St.
UPI published many of the great photographs of the Century and if you've wondered what happened to all their 11.5 million photographs;they ended up in a cave in Pennsylvania, owned by Bill Gates's Corbus.
Gary Haynes has put together this wonderful collection from these archives ,along with comments on the photographs, circumstances and photographers.
In this large book of 256 pages and 238 B&W photographs, Haynes will enthrall you and bring back many memories. You'll remember seeing many of them, you may have even watched sone take place (live or on TV);and others will be new to you.But one thing is for sure, you'll enjoy this remarkable collection.
Here are some of what is included;
The Hindenbury exploding in 1937.
Barrels of wine being dumped in the gutter in Los Angeles,in the
1920's.
The KKK parade in Long Branch,NJ,on July 4,1924.
Truman holding up the Chicago Times announcing "Dewey Defeats Truman"
November 3,1948.
People viewing John Dillinger on a slab,July,1934.
Rare photograph of JFK in a hat;and not the top hat at the Inaugural.
Hermann Goering ,accustomed to ostentatious luxury, eating from a tin
plate during a break in his Neurenberg tria.
JFK and Sinatra as best of pals.
President Truman playing a tune with Lauren Bacall draped across the
piano.
Louis Armstrong serenading his wife Lillian in front of the Sphinx.
and even some humor ,such as;
Lee Travino ,emerging from a rough ,holding a large snake on the end of
his club.Though it was a prank rubber snake,it always startled the
bystanders.
What a wonderful collection of photographs and many thanks to both Haynes for putting them together and least, but not all,to the photographers who took them.
Book Description
A new assemblage of masterly essays from a foremost scholar of American history and culture
Alan Trachtenberg has always been interested in cultural artifacts that register meanings and feelings that Americans share even when they disagree about them. Some of the most beloved ones—like the famous last photograph of Abraham Lincoln, taken at the time of his second inaugural—are downright puzzling, and it is their obscure, riddlelike aspects that draw his attention in the scintillating essays of Lincoln’s Smile and Other Enigmas.
With matchless authority, Trachtenberg moves from the daguerreotypes that entranced Americans from the start (and that Hawthorne made much of in The House of Seven Gables) to literary texts of which he is a peerless interpreter: Howell’s novels, Horatio Alger’s stories, Huckleberry Finn, the cityscapes of Walt Whitman and Stephen Crane. In his exploration of the ways that nineteenth-and early-twentieth-century writers tried to make sense of the modern American city he also addresses subjects as diverse as Louis Sullivan’s Auditorium Building, the Brooklyn Bridge, and the early works of Lewis Mumford. The celebrated author of Reading American Photographs concludes his important new book with “readings” not only of the photographs of Walker Evans, Wright Morris, and Eugene Smith, but of the city images of film noir.

This essay collection will be a hit for a wide audience and is not to be missed........2007-04-11
LINCOLN'S SMILE AND OTHER ENIGMAS is cultural history at its best: it gathers essays from cultural historian Alan Trachtenberg from the last 40 years, considering all kinds of topics relating history to film and photo. While this could also have been featured in our 'Arts' section, it'd be a shame for any collection of American history and culture to miss this, whether it be at the college or public lending library levels. Essays are lively, insightful surveys of the images and history that captured American attention, covering a wide range of topics from architecture to cultural artifacts. This essay collection will be a hit for a wide audience and is not to be missed.

Ansel Adams may be one of the most famous nature photographers ever, but his often-overlooked portraits of people and images of buildings and manmade landscapes are as stirring and beautiful as his inimitable wilderness photographs. This is a manageably sized volume that collects images of the state's beaches, mountains, parks, architecture, and people, as well as writing--poems, essays, fiction--by authors such as John Steinbeck, Jack Kerouac, Robert Louis Stevenson, Walt Whitman, and Joan Didion. The combination of words and images is a visual and literary homage to California, a place that was home to and the source of inspiration for the great photographer.

California.......2004-06-16
Growing up in California is obviously a different experience from growing up anywhere else in the world. These photographs are very representative of what California is like not only at the beach areas. It shows California's other beautiful landscape elements as well as people and structures. It is funny because California is such a large state and I have never been to most of the places he photographs. His pictures are so detailed that you can tell that he planned them for a very long time. He probably sat there waiting for that perfect light in order to capture what we see in this book. The photographs make you feel as if you are there with him as he photographs these magnificent places.
Through these pictures I am able to experience all of California without ever stepping foot in these places. The patience and discipline Adams has as a photographer is definitely apparent in this book. It is a great representation of the type of photographer he was and what exactly he was trying to make us see. It also helps us experience the photographs with excellent reproductions in the book. I do not believe anything is lost with these reproductions and they are very well designed in the book. The layout compliments the photographs along with the writings that accentuate the feel of the book and the knowledge of California. The well-known writers that the editors chose add to that unique feel California has. All-in-all I recommend this book to anyone interested in Ansel Adams and photography
Add New Dimensions to Your Appreciation of Ansel Adams.......2000-11-12
If you are like me, you feel you know work work of Ansel Adams quite well. Well, this book was a pleasant surprise in that it introduced me to many rewarding works that I had not seen before. These evoked many happy memories for me, and added to my delight in knowing California.
I was born and raised in California, so most of these scenes are ones that are familiar to me. Surprisingly, these were the first good photographs I had ever seen of many of the scenes, even though the scenes captured by the camera are often common ones.
The book contains a great deal of text that attempts to expand one's understanding of California, both as a physical and as a psychological place. If you have never been to California, you may find these useful. If you know California, they may seem redundant to the images. The authors include Richard Henry Dana, Jr., John Steinbeck, Laura Ingalls Wilder, Robert Louis Stevenson, Henry Miller, Joan Dideon, and Mark Twain. The texts are well chosen and appropriate, if sometimes superfluous.
The notes by the editor, Ms. Stillman, were helpful. "It was light that inspired Ansel to photograph . . . ." "He worked almost exclusively at dawn or sunset . . . " because the light was more vivid then. Here is a quote from Adams, "The silver light turned every blade of grass and every particle of sand into a luminous metallic spendor . . . ." Few have ever captured magnificence in black and white as well as Adams did.
Some of my favorite images included:
Trailer-Camp Children, Richmond, 1944
Hull of Wrecked Ship, Breakers, Drake's Bay, 1953
Forest, Castle Rock State Park, 1962
Pasture, Sonoma County, 1951
Clearing Storm, Sonoma County Hills, 1951
Mount Lassen from the devastated area, 1949
Redwoods, Bull Creek Flat, 1960
Edward Weston, Carmel Highlands, 1945
Surf and Rock, Monterey County Coast, 1945
Window, Robert Louis Stevenson House, Monterey, 1953
Orchard, Santa Clara, 1954
Dead Oak Tree, Sierra Foothills, 1938
Sunrise, Death Valley, 1948
Manley Beacon, Death Valley, 1948
Sand Fence, Near Keeler, 1948
Yosemite Valley View, 1944
Half Dome (Winter) from Glacier Point, 1940
El Capitan, 1952
Jeffrey Pine, Yosemite, 1945
Dawn, Mount Whitney, 1932
My enjoyment of the book was increased by nine images of Ansel Adams working by Dorothea Lange from 1953.
Why, then, did I rate the book at 4 stars, rather than 5?
Basically, the book design is all wrong. The size of the images are either too small for their grandeur and subject, or are reproduced across two pages with a crease in the middle. Although the paper and reproduction quality are excellent, the basic layout and page size are wrong. Perhaps a future edition will remedy that problem.
I also found the introduction by Page Stegner to be too much about California and not enough about Adams.
I do recommend that you examine this book. I'm not sure whether or not you will want to purchase it or not. The sizing of the images does spoil the effects quite a bit.
After you have finished enjoying many "new to you" Ansel Adams images, I suggest that you plan a trip to visit those places you are most inspired by. Take along your camera and see what wonderful photographs you can take now at dawn or dusk, with him as your teacher.
Live in the golden glow of California wherever you are!
superb quality reproductions, DIRE design.......2000-09-22
Absolutely superb reproductions of many 'new' and previously unpublished photographs .... stunning. I agree with the pevious reviewer in this respect. However, in my view the 'design' of the book is a disaster, and the potential enjoyment of this book seriously compromised. The adoption of a 'portrait' format for a collection of predominantly 'landscape' format images is perverse, and has meant that undersize images are surrounded top and/or bottom by acres of white paper, the image generally runs off the side of the page, all of which gives an unbalanced and uncontained appearance Worse still are the images that are reproduced across two pages (albeit at a very much more satisfactory size), with the crease of the spine in the image. AA had very clear views, as to how his images should be displayed, or published, he would surely not have countenanced this outrageous act of disrespect of his work. Should there be any more AA anthologies in the pipeline - and there must be given the huge quantity of his work as yet unseen, then I urge that a designer be used who actually understands the impact of design in use, respects the content of the book, and is able to enhance it, rather than compromise it as here. It is a shame that the book is not larger, and perhaps of a square format. I would still have have bought it, even at twice the price, and not regretted the purchase
Perhaps the Best Complilation of Adams' Work Ever Produced.......1999-03-08
CALIFORNIA is arguably the best compilation of Ansel Adams' work ever produced. The design of the large-format book is striking, elegant and restrained. Especially effective are the widely spaced lines of delicate sans serif type. The luxurious coated stock is very heavy and very glossy. The quality of the the roughly 100 big black-and-white duotone reproductions is extraordinary, the result, as it is, of cutting edge laser-scanning technology. Their sharpness, their bite and vividness, the richness and depth of their blacks and the brightness of their brights perfectly convey the essence of Adams' aesthetic ethos and vision and nonpareil technical skills. The texts of most books on Adams' work are chiefly concerned with how the photographs were made, and on the artist's intentions. CALIFORNIA has none of that. Instead, it features brief writings about the Golden State by a disparate array of authors, including, among others, Walt Whitman, John McPhee, Henry Miller and, quite unexpectedly, Emily Post. Certainly, these additions enhance the book's general appeal, but one wonders how comfortable Adams would have been with this approach, since his photographs speak so eloquently for themselves and don't require any verbal support whatsoever. Ansel Adams was probably the greatest landscape photographer who has ever lived and landscapes pedominate in this book. But he excelled with other kinds of pictures as well - portraits, buildings, outdoor still lives, etc. - and this splendid volume records the full range of his amazing talent.
Book Description
A sensual, visually opulent photographic history of the nude athlete.
The history of sports is also a history of nude photography. Sports and gamesindeed all forms of physical culturehave always been practiced in a state of at least semi-nudity. Yet never before have the sensual and erotic aspects of sports been celebrated with such enthusiasm as they are today.
Peter Kuhnst's thoughtful selection of images traces the history of the nude athlete in photography from the mid-nineteenth century to the present. From Eadweard Muybridge's motion studies of runners and javelin throwers, through European Naturism, the painterly photography of Pictorialism, and Leni Riefenstahl's work under the Third Reich, to stunning contemporary photographs by Robert Mapplethorpe, Herb Ritts, Bruce Weber, and Annie Leibovitz, the list of photographers is long and varied, and their styles range from traditional to rebellious to humorous to provocative.
This sumptuous and beautifully printed survey is sure to captivate both lovers of fine photography and sports fans.

Portraying Naked Men and Women at the Peak of Good Health .......2005-09-03
Contrary to what one might suppose from its title, this lavish portfolio does not compile nude portraits of celebrity sports figures or body-builder enthusiasts. Rather, most of the pictures included portray the health/hygiene and nature spirituality aspects of the multiform clothing-free movement from its earliest days. Together with a highly informative text, the pictures make evident the relevance of the values and practices of naturist/nudist groups for modern dance, film, art, gymnastics, and the recreational conventions of the larger popular culture. The high quality reproductions are printed on heavy photographic-quality paper and bound in an oversize volume by a firm in Switzerland specializing in the publication of art books. Kuhnst is Professor of Sports Science at the University of Bochum (Germany).
