Book Description
Mayhem and violence rule in this collection of issues one through seven of Jhonen Vasquez's Johnny the Homicidal Maniac, as well as material seen before only in Carpe Noctem magazine. Dark and disturbingly funny, JTHM follows the adventures of Johnny (you can call him Nny), who lives with a pair of styrofoam doughboys that encourage his madness, a wall that constantly needs a fresh coat of blood, and--oh, yeah--his victims in various states of torture. Join Nny as he frightens the little boy next door (Todd, known to fans of Vasquez's work as Squee), thirsts for Cherry Brain Freezies, attempts suicide, draws Happy Noodle Boy, and tries to uncover the meaning of his homicidal existence.

JTHM.......2007-08-24
VERY FUNNY LIGHT READING IN THE VERY DARK ZONE,IF YOU LIKE OVER THE TOP GORE THIS BOOKS FOR YOU!!
Insanity and Murder are Funny.......2006-11-26
Well actually, they really aren't, but after reading JTHM you might think they are. Jhonen Vasquez has an amazing talent; he is capable of making the most disturbing things laugh-out-loud hilarious. For this I wish to give JTHM Director's Cut a 5/5, but I cannot. But before I explain why, let me attempt to explain the meaning behind Jhonen's madness. Naturally, this is merely _my_ interpretation of his work.
JTHM is an attack (and a very violent one at that) on normalcy through the use of satire and parody with disturbing, dark themes. Due to the dark themes and disturbing content, this work could be labeled as "gothic" (and often is), but that would be rather insulting. Ironically, "goths" tend to adore the disturbing and the dark simply because it is not "normal," but they end up carving a very specific mold of normalcy out for their own clique. "If you don't fit a certain image, you're not goth and you're not one of US," a goth might say. JTHM is not only an attack on what MOST of us would consider normal, but also an attack on what GOTHS consider normal. It is an attack on all those arrogant people out there who deliberately exclude others because they don't fit in with their own definition of what normal is.
This theme pervades the entire series, from when Johnny is brutally torturing bullies for making fun of him for what he wears, to the little comments JV sometimes scratches in at the corners of his panels. But, it is not JV's attack on normalcy that is the most interesting aspect of JTHM, it is the contradictions. On the one hand, much of this comic book is rather demented and disgusting, but at the same time the book is hilarious--pulling the reader in two different directions at once. Also, sometimes there are comic strips that are completely pointless and filled with excessive (and unnecessary) violence, while there are others that have Johnny going on thought-provoking philosophical ramblings. This tension from pulling the reader back and forth (between violence and humor, and between pointlessness and meaning) is so instense that if you try to read too much at once you'll either sweat excessively, vomit profusely, or pass out from lack of oxygen because you're laughing so hard (or a combination of all three). I suggest reading in small dosages, you've been warned :)
This actually brings me to one of my only complaints. The JTHM series once featured "Meanwhiles" which are mini comic strips whose sole purpose is simply a brief, funny intermission between the JTHM series. The lack of meanwhiles lowers the value of the book (since they are really funny). But, the Meanwhiles also served as a means to break up the tension in the Johnny series. Since JTHM is so intense, the random and so often silly nature of the Meanwhile comic strips served as a pleasant deviation, and the lack of these pleasant little breaks means it's much more difficult to read JTHM in longer bursts.
My only other complaint is in the sturdiness of the actual book itself. I've only read through JTHM a few times, but already pages are falling out all over the place. I feel kind of bad negating a star primarily because of this reason (since it is not Jhonen's fault), but pages falling out really does detract from the overall experience.
Despite the lack of Meanwhiles and the overall flimsyness of the book itself, this is a solid purchase. Unless you're too easily offended or puke all over the place at the sight of blood, this graphic novel should not disappoint. Highly recommended!!!
The darkest, goriest, most awesome story ever!.......2006-11-05
I was introduced to this by my crazy friend, and I love it. Jhonen Vasquez has a very dark sense of humor, and has very comedic ways of showing someone kill people. I would HIGHLY suggest that one peeks into the book (click "Search inside this book") and read a couple of pages. In all honesty, though, if you don't like the few pages that are shown through Amazon, then you probably will not like the book. I think that the artwork is extremly well done, but it might not hold the interest of certain "normal" people.
Amazing Book.......2006-09-07
For anyone thinking of buying this book, the title explains the content: Johnny is a homicidal maniac. And this isn't an 80's horror film kind of homicidal maniac (one who likes to kill whislt in silhouette), oh no; the tortures and murders are shown in detail. The art work is very different compared to pretty much any other art work you'll find. Jhonen's use of skinny-as-hell characters and geometric drawings make this truly unique. Some may not like it, but that's a personal preferance.
That aside.
The story is non-linear in its own way (let's get one thing straight: it's not Tarentino non-linear), with different events taking place that can pretty much be interchanged with themselves (until part five), which gives the reader a simular sense of Johnny's psychosis. The dialouge is well crafted, logical (irony!) and often philisophical. If you're an intellectual, you'll thouroughly enjoy what the book has to offer...if you can manage some gore.
Also, the Happy Noodle Boy one-page segments are kept in this "Director's Cut" edition. These I found to be hilarious in their own, beyond random way. Seriously, these things are extremely random. Basically, it follows Happy Noodle Boy throughout a day in his life, which is often filled with swearing, yelling at people and usually ends with Noodle Boy getting shot.
In all, this is a great book and I highly suggest you pick up a copy. I find it very hard to believe anybody could whole-heartedly dislike this book.
Jhonny kicks your [...].......2006-08-09

Book Description
David Lynch is an anomaly. A pioneer of the American 'indie' aesthetic, he also works in Hollywood and for network TV. He has created some of the most disturbing images in contemporary cinema, and produced startlingly innovative work in sound. If the consistency of his 'vision' suggests he might be approached as an auteur, defining that vision raises many questions. The essays in this collection push toward a fuller account of the cultural and technological contexts within which his works developed during the 1980s and 1990s, and of his intense engagement with the creative and working practices of the industry. They offer an up-to-date range of theoretically divergent readings that demonstrates not only the difficulty of locating stable interpretative positions for Lynch's work, but also the pleasure of finding new ways of thinking about it. Films discussed include Blue Velvet, Wild at Heart, The Straight Story, and Mulholland Drive.
Customer Reviews:
Very good read on David Lynch.......2007-07-06
I'm reading this book a 2nd time now. I would say this book is im my top three Lynch books as well and it provides a very good outline, and possibly, a key, for the way Lynch thinks. If anything, it will help you come up with more of your own conclusions. From a devoted Lynch fan, this is a great read!
lynch debunk.......2005-10-14
I gotta agree with Critic-AL... too much ink is being spilled about Lynch that reads like retread po-mo theories. I'll go with Pervert in the Pulpit too, and I'm not alone. You don't have to be a film student or academic to appreciate Johnson's heady read ... still, I think the review of Pervert by David Lancaster in the latest issue of Film and History totally sums up my thinking: "There is a slightly malicious pleasure in seeing a modish reputation being debunked, especially when the reader was mystified by the fuss in the first place. Pervert in the Pulpit is not a crude hatchet job, however. Rather, it is clear-sighted and informed, and, in true Manichean fashion, on the side of the critical angels."
adulation or criticism?.......2005-03-26
By calling Nochimson's book "amazing," [...]the problem with a lot of Lynch criticism: the audience for his films is divided between fans and serious students of cinema. As Lynch's reputation as an innovator continues to wear thin - face, it, his uneven oeuvre is not aging well - die-hard loyalists continue to gush about his, in my opnion, limited success as a cutting-edge film director. This book may be timely, but it isn't as interesting as Jeff Johnson's iconoclastic "Pervert in the Pulpit: Morality in the Work of David Lynch," which I'd recommend before any of the other, more pandering texts Joe cites.
One of the Best Books on Lynch.......2004-09-23
Is it possible for a good book of film criticism to be dominated by lavish photos and the like? Not in my experience. The closest to that is the BFI series, and those are hardly the sort of thing "a reader" is talking about. Of all the books on Lynch out there, this is probably my #3, behind Martha Nomchinson's amazing "Wild at Heart in Hollywood" and the essential "Lynch on Lynch."
The simataneous release of the paperback and hardcover editions should have clued "a reader" into the HC edition being a library edition... Don't let this person's stupidty put you off, this is one of the best books analyzing Lynch one can find.

Book Description
Haskins' seminal sixties classics, which include the groundbreaking Cowboy Kate, are landmarks in the history of photography, as revered today as they were when first published forty years ago. In Cowboy Kate, a lyrical tale of the triumph of youth played out by cowgirls of the old west, Haskins reinvented the genre of the nude with stunningly well-executed photographs, a cinematic approach, and a subtly engaging narrative. Often copied but rarely equaled, Haskins has an exceptional ability to photograph women with a sensitivity that has won him accolades from men and women alike. The "Director's Cut" is revised to include new and previously unpublished photographs.

Black & white, film grain, and boobies........2007-09-24
Years ago, I caught an article about Sam Haskins in Photo magazine. It talked much about the man and his work, and since reading that article I was dead set on finding a copy of "Cowboy Kate" Unfortunately, the book was out of print and the cost of obtaining a copy was substantially high for my budget. So there it remained on my wish list for years. Fortunately, I occasionally checked amazon to see if maybe the price would go down. And it did, and I bought.
This book is filled with vintage erotic photography. By vintage I mean the 60's and by erotic, I don't really mean erotic at all. The images are all black and white, usually very high contrast and grain... a style that I have always loved. The images will undoubtedly come off as alluring and sexual because of the beautiful women and nudity. It comes off very sexual at times, but I believe that it was done in such a way that it can't even really be deemed "erotic" Haskins approached the subjects in such a noble way, it dodges the overly graphic, and often blatantly pornographic erotic books that many of us are used to seeing in the art books section. They are simply beautiful images that deserve long, appreciative looks. The photographs for me are absolutely timeless. Many can probably conclude the general time period in which they were photographed, but it still remains (to me) as fresh as anything that might have been photographed yesterday without the addition of the sex drive requirements that seem to be the standard these days.
There are a few different bodies of work included in this book. My favorite is probably Cowboy Kate (cover image) but the other images also show for themselves. In a way, the bodies of work speak as a narrative... not so much frame to frame, but it tells a story as a whole. The girls are obviously comfortable in front of the camera, often playful and extroverted. Everything feels very natural and nothing seems forced. It doesn't feel like a photo shoot captured and laid out in a book for consumers.
Unfortunately a few of my favorite Haskins photographs are not included in this book, but there are many others that make up for it. A great book to own. Get it before it goes out of print (again).
An all Time Masterpiece.......2007-09-08
I'll never forget being knocked off my feet in the sixties by the freshness, frankness, imagination, lack of inhibition and striking beauty of Cowboy Kate. I still take it as a homage to our loveliest fantasies of women. It was an absolute breath of fresh air in comparison to 'artistic' i.e. expressionless and uninvolved women and stereotyped and jaded 'pinups.' What amazes me is that no one has yet done it any better. Haskin's women are both the girl next door and goddesses of unmatched grace, yet approachable. If you're a photographer, like me, Cowboy Kate is a source of fun, beauty and inspiration. If you're not, unrivaled fun and beauty isn't such a bad deal.
This book is extremely erotic!.......2007-01-20
The book was very well put together. However, I am not familiar with the original, so I cannot proclaim any differences. I bought this book because I am a fan of photography and thought it would be artistically fun and sexy, and it is! It's a lot more blatently erotic than I expected. Something I didn't expect to discover from this book is that I don't really like the twiggy beauty from the 60s. But for those who do, this book is what you're looking for. There are some great artistic efforts with lighting and composition. Very impressive black and whites.
Killer Cowboy Kate, Beauty and Art have never been so mutually exclusive........2006-10-21
Buy this book now, It's going to be devoured by those in the know and it will cost you a fortune! Ethereal and magical are one way to describe Sam Haskins photos, also sexy and fabulous are good adjectives. It would be hard to choose. I ordered this book knowing that it was, and is, a classic, but had no idea of the impact these photos would have. You can tell by the cover that you are in for an emotionally charged ride that you will never forget. There is a slim narrative running throughout these photos, but you as the viewer are allowed to create your own story , and what a story it is. Kate and her cohorts are iconic babes that transcend the 60's. The girl's sheer beauty and playfulness will make you gasp, and even chuckle at their bodaciousness. I won't give away any secrets, but the photo's are remastered and gloriously beautiful. You..must...order...now!

Book Description
The Cinema of George A. Romero: Knight of the Living Dead is the first in-depth study in English of the career of this foremost auteur working at the margins of the Hollywood mainstream in the horror genre. In placing Romero's oeuvre in the context of literary naturalism, the book explores the relevance of the director's films within American cultural traditions and thus explains the potency of such work beyond 'splatter movie' models. The author explores the roots of naturalism in the work of Emile Zola and traces this through to the EC Comics of the 1950s and on to the work of Stephen King. In so doing, the book illuminates the importance of seminal Romero texts such as Night of the Living Dead (1968), Creepshow (1982), Monkey Shines (1988), The Dark Half (1992). This study also includes full coverage of Romero's latest feature, Bruiser (2000), as well as his screenplays and teleplays.
Customer Reviews:
A little forced... .......2006-07-14
Well written, but a little forced. The author's preconceived theory (a connection between Romero's works and the literary Naturalism inspired by Emile Zola) overwhelms almost every other aspect of his critical analysis and prevails on more objective aspects of Romero's art; not to mention the historical and documentary insight, which is very poor here. Unfortunately, Williams never doubts of his critical intuitions in this book, despite G. A. Romero himself never mentioned any link between his movies and Zola or others. Maybe a relashionship between Naturalism and Romero could have been an interesting idea, but to say that every single element of his work is probably linked to Dreiser, Zola or Norris, is really too much. Nevertherless, the book examines every single movie of Romero's filmography as far as "Bruiser": it is the most exhaustive (even if one-sided) critical essay about his films up to now.
Romero - More than just a zombie maker.......2006-02-22
I doubt there's a single horror-movie fan on this entire earth who doesn't know who George A. Romero is, the creator of zombie classics Night of the Living Dead, Dawn of the Dead, and Day of the Dead (and the fourth one, Land of the Dead, however, this movie hadn't yet been made when The Cinema of George A. Romero came out and thus it's not included in the book).
But Romero is more than just a creator of zombies, and Tony Williams presents in his book a study of all Romero's movies, not just the ones where the living dead stumbles around in the streets, looking for the next human being they can get a snack from. Romero is a creator of movies where he likes to make a point, or points; he has tons of thoughts and ideas - and especially social criticism - that he includes in his work, and Williams manages to offer a clear picture of Romero's complete production and the reasons as to why it looks the way it does.
This is most definitely a book for movie-lovers, and even though it happens to be a scholarly book this still doesn't mean that movie-lovers who are not scholars cannot get something good out of it. Or put in other words, The Cinema of George A. Romero is a book that can be read by all, scholars as well as non-scholars.
But even though Romero, as we all know, not only masters how to create creepy zombies it's still these creatures and the movies they star in that most people think of when they hear his name. And perhaps that isn't much of a surprise, considering how immensely popular they still are, despite having been made quite a few years ago. The horror genre of today isn't what it used to be, and most contemporary horror flicks are "almost entirely devoid of social meaning and dependent upon gratuitous sensationalism" (p. 21).
Well, not so with the ones made by Romero, and this book will most definitely tell you the reasons why.
A Well-Deserved Comprehensive Critical Treatment .......2006-02-07
I am submitting these comments largely to serve as a sort of counterpoint to those of N. P. Stathoupolous. Mr./Ms. Stathoupolous's point regarding the arid, academic tenor of this work is valid. I would suggest, however, that the popular critical evaluations of Romero's better known films for which Mr./Ms. Stathoupolous is looking have already been published; while a comprehensive academic evaluation of the whole of Romero's oeuvre was lacking. I feel that Mr. Williams has done a great service to american cinephiles by giving Romero's corpus the complete exegesis that it deserves. It is unfortunate that the academic community has a general tendency to view the horror genre as somewhat less than true cinematic art. I think it would be an equal disservice for the genre fans of Romero's zombie films to similarly dismiss Mr. Williams' fine work out of hand.
Why do they come here?.......2004-09-21
When you see a book titled 'The Cinema of', you know it's supposed to be serious. (Instead of 'The Films of', 'The Movies of', etc.)
Williams, who did a good book about families in the American horror film (Hearths of Darkness) asserts that much of Romero's work is connected with the naturalist tradition of writers like Zola. He also traces lines to EC comics, and connects up Romero works like Dawn of the Dead with the director's hometown of Pittsburgh and a certain vision of a consumerist society that masks a certain social decay.
The problem with books like this, however good the points they make, is often the language and the presentation. There is a large body of Romero fans, particularly Dawn of the Dead fans who may appreciate a 'serious' consideration of the director's films (or his 'cinema'). However, I think most fans are alienated by work like this, which is too stuck in academia and is often bloated by unnecessarily flowery language and interpretation to appeal to the people who are watching these films regularly. It's unfortunate, because film is such a mass, popular medium, and yet the academic study of the medium is too stuck in the ivory tower. It seems like you can't just write the obvious, or even just discuss the films if you want to be taken seriously. In order to be write a 'serious' book about an American indie's 'cinema', you have to wrap it up in frameworks that are as lifelike as some of Romero's zombies. The book certainly has good points to make and provides some food for thought (or flesh for thought), but I found it a bit much at times as Williams almost painfully recounts scenes from the films with weighty pronouncements (not particularly backed up) and also, annoyingly, gets names and quotes wrong (fact-checking).
Maybe Romero will return to the sub-genre he created with a film about zombies running rampant in a university...

Book Description
Terrence Malick is one of Hollywood's most enigmatic and legendary film-makers. Despite his limited output, and a famous twenty-year absence from cinema, Badlands, Days of Heaven and The Thin Red Line have challenged genre expectation and redefined notions of contemporary film language.
This collection explores his work from a series of vantage points, encompassing issues of identity, the poetics of cinema, representation of the road, youth culture and the American West, depiction of landscape and nature, use of sound and music, and the influence of philosopher Martin Heidegger. Particular emphasis is placed on The Thin Red Line, Malick's haunting evocation of human suffering during World War II, an important classic of modern cinema. Tracing his unique and under-explored film-making style from the 'golden age'of Hollywood to the present, each essay provides innovative ways of reading his films, thus highlighting the significance this truly original director.
Customer Reviews:
Mildly revealing.......2007-04-17
This book is really a discussion of the filmmaker's work by academicians, and contains no direct input from the enigmatic artist, or information about the source or inspiration of his material, or his way of working. But fans of his films will probably enjoy being immersed in the discussions, even if the films are over-analyzed.

The book was very well written. It had everything you needed to defeat the game except...the maps were pitiful. If you need the map, do not get it. If you are fine without maps, get it! I also collect guides for fun, it is fun to read as well as helpful.
Don't waste your time or money.......2001-06-06
I've played through RE:Directors cut several times and always thought there was something missing. After reading this guide I was wrong. There is absolutely nothing in this guide that you can't figure out on your own or by reading the tricks section of any video game magazine. The maps are worthless, the boss stategies are the same old "Try not to get hit while trying to hit the boss", and even the way the walkthrough is laid out on the pages can be confusing. This guide walks you around like you have no idea how to play a video game. Save your money, it is truely the worst guide ever written.

I beat Final fantasy 7 without a guide, I've gotten through about half of Resident evil,FF8,and I've just about beat Crash 2 without the guides but I do like having them for second go rounds... most give you tips, maps, and well disired secrets, with the Final Fantasy games they list much needed items list, world maps, and weapons. all and all I feel they have their good points, but someone shouldn't rely on them for walkthroughs because that's part of the fun in playing... long time gamer... Book Description
Werner Herzog is renowned for pushing the boundaries of conventional cinema, especially those between the fictional and the factual, the fantastic and the real. The Cinema of Werner Herzog: Aesthetic Ecstasy and Truth is the first study in twenty years devoted entirely to an analysis of Herzog's work. It explores the director's continuing search for what he has described as 'ecstatic truth,' drawing on over thirty-five films, from the epics Aguirre: Wrath of God (1972) and Fitzcarraldo (1982) to innovative documentaries like Fata Morgana (1971), Lessons of Darkness (1992), and Grizzly Man (2005). Special attention is paid to Herzog's signature style of cinematic composition, his "romantic" influences, and his fascination with madmen, colonialism, and war.

Customer Reviews:
great book.......2007-09-04
Another great book from Alton Gansky, read the first two in this series, Director's Cut is the third book. HOPE he writes another. This book will keep you guessing who done it to the end. This is a Christian mystery but not preachy, none of his books are, but you do know the characters and where they stand on God. I love the fact I can read a great mystery thats clean of bad words.
Another great novel.......2007-02-15
I loved this book, as I loved the entire Madison Glenn series. The ending was a slight bit corny, though, and I did guess what was going to happen before the end. All in all, still a great book and a very easy read. The book was well-balanced between suspense and spirituality so it all flowed well together. I recommend this series.
GREAT!!!!.......2006-04-27
I loved this book! It was about God but not pressing! I`m a Chirstian and I loved it! But, everybody would love it if ya like a good mystery! I waiting to read his other books!
Director's Cut is a delicious slice of suspense! .......2005-12-30
Madison Glenn's beautiful cousin, Catherine Anderson, is in Santa Rita to star in a dinner theater production. Yet, when Catherine's chauffeur is found dead in her swimming pool, the curtain almost comes down on the performance. It seems that someone has written a few changes into the script that makes real life more lethal.
Alton Gansky knows how to tell a great story and this book is no exception. The main characters, Maddy and Catherine, move the action along with a purpose and power. Maddy is an extraordinary woman, filled with intelligence, wisdom, and Christian compassion. Although she has her eye on a congressional seat, she puts her own career in jeopardy as she literally plunges into the murder investigation. Catherine is also a strong character, gifted with beauty and a stage presence that satisfies her fans.
The author leads readers behind the curtains to catch a glimpse of the production at the theater. The tediousness of rehearsal contrasts sharply with the tension aroused after the murder. The subtle blending of acting with the actual story line gives these pages an unusual twist. As the plot dives deeper into the mystery, the lines blur between the script of the play and the real world. A chilling sense of foreboding creeps in, which won't be fully eased until the final pages.
Every character has a role to play and the spotlight of suspicion swings wildly at moments. Yet, when it all fades to black, readers will sigh with relief and contentment. There's no need to fear the ending of this book--Alton Gansky is a master storyteller. -- Joyce Handzo, Christian Book Previews.com

Kieslowski on Kieslowski
ASIN: 1903364914 |
Book Description
Since his death in 1996, Krzysztof Kieslowski has remained the best-known contemporary Polish filmmaker and one of the most popular and respected European directors, internationally renowned for his ambitious Decalogue and Three Colors trilogy.
In this new addition to the Directors'Cuts series, Marek Haltof provides a comprehensive study of Kieslowski's cinema, discussing industrial practices in Poland and stressing that the director did not fit the traditional image of a "great" East-Central European auteur. He draws a fascinating portrait of the stridently independent director's work, noting that Kieslowski was not afraid to express unpopular views in film or in life. Haltof also shows how the director's work remains unique in the context of Polish documentary and narrative cinema.

Book Description
Todd Haynes has emerged from the trenches of independent American film in the 1990s to become one of the twenty-first century's most audacious filmmakers. In a series of smart, informative essays, this book traces his career from its roots in New Queer Cinema to the Oscar-nominated Far from Heaven (2002). Along the way, it covers such landmark films as Poison (1991), Safe (1995), and Velvet Goldmine (1998). Contributors look at these films from a variety of angles, including his debts to the avant-garde and such noted precursors as Rainer Werner Fassbinder; his adventurous uses of melodrama; and his incisive portrayals of contemporary life.
