Book Description
The third edition of Engineering Design represents a major reorganization and expansion. The revision has resulted from the recognition that engineering students need more structure to guide them through the design process. Chapters have been reordered to be more in the natural progression of the design process. The book is broader in content than most design texts, but now contains much more prescriptive guidance on how to carry out design.

Customer Reviews:
Not of much value........2007-06-12
Very little useful information. If you planning a home theatre this book really doens't offer any information on design or component integration. Very basic in it's approach with references to VCR's and other dated technology.
Great pocket book.......2007-01-17
As an proffesional I apreciate this book, it gives precise information. It is well written and on plain english as it's posiblle.
I recomending this book!
Very Useful Reference.......2006-12-20
I bought this book as a quick reference for a Technical Support group I manage. We have a few dozen products that require an installer to run wires throughout a house. Unfortunately, a large majority of the calls I get are wiring related and this book provides tremendous insight into the problems created by improper wiring.
If you want to learn about wiring, this is the book to buy. I also bought the full book that goes with it. It must be good because I got the only paperback, and all the used hardback books are almost double the retail price.
From this guide you'll learn everything relating to wiring. You'll learn balanced vs unbalanced, ground loop isolation vs cross talk, and the list would almost be half as long as the pocket guide. Simply put, if your livlihood depends upon wiring, this book will help you a great deal.
So much information in such a small space. Best of its Kind........2006-05-01
Belden is the king of cables and Stephen Lampen is a Belden Kingpin. This book is one-of-a-kind and is a must for anyone working with, or even remotely interested in audio, video, data and/or CATV cabling. It is essential, fundamental knowledge about using cables.
Nope, it's not for the "novis" but I believe a novice will find it interesting if you understand the concept that 2 wires make a circuit. Take your time with it and Google anything you don't understand. There are some complex topics in here but nothing you won't get your head around if you read it and think about it. It is presented in a good, logical progressive order.
Stephen makes it all readable with many interesting and amusing anecdotes and tidbits. The "Grounded Dog" story (p 363) is worth the price of the book alone.
I've been in broadcast Engineering for years and this book solved a few mysteries for me.
Check out the contents list to see if it's for you.
Not for the novis........2005-09-07
I purchased this product with a novis knowledge of electronics. I could not understand one page. If you are a novis this is not the book for you.
Book Description
This dictionary supplies associations which have been evoked by plants, animals, gems, objects and concepts throughout the history of Western civilization, from the hieroglyphs of ancient Egypt to the poetry of Dylan Thomas. It supplies background information from fields which may not be everyone's specialty, such as biology and mythology. It gives not one, but several meanings which may apply simultaneously, since indefiniteness is the mark of symbols. No fine distinction is made between symbols, allegories, metaphors, signs, types or images, since such subtle distinctions, however sensible from a scientific point of view, are useless to a person struggling with the deeper comprehension, and thus appreciation, of a particular 'symbol'.Important general entries are listed such as archetypes, ass, binary, bull, calendar, eagle, elements, Great Goddess, Sacred King, sun, etc., which it is advisable to read first. Information was gathered from primary sources: both famous and obscure classical authors; the Bible; the medieval scholar and musician Hildegard von Bingen; but also Donne, Shakespeare and Eliot. Lists of primary and secondary literature are included.
From the many notes left behind by the late Ad de Vries, his son has gathered enough new material to enlarge the original 1974 edition more than 20%. Included are many new entries taken from herbals and lapidaries as well as ancient books on medicine, architecture and dreams. This dictionary is an invaluable source of reference for students of many disciplines, as well as for writers and artists.
Customer Reviews:
way overpriced.......2007-07-06
I happened to get a decent deal on the book and I'm so glad that I didn't pay the money that they're asking for. It is extensive in scope but the definitions are to me shallow. Intuitive?..Intellectual and a reference book. There are many decent ones out there just as good if not better than this one.
Not without flaws, nonetheless a treasure trove.......2005-11-09
This lengthy work draws together information from a wide variety of sources in an attempt to give interpretations of symbols. The book is perhaps the most ambitious compilation of symbol interpretations ever to have been assembled.
On the negative side, the book is, unfortunately, poorly edited, with many typos, grammatical errors and misspellings. Also, some symbol interpretations are somewhat farfetched. The author's interpretation of Biblical symbolism is particularly weak, perhaps due in part to his apparent anti-Christian bias. Also, he misses many important Freudian and Jungian interpretations of symbols.
This having been said, for a given symbol this book gives a great deal of material which can be used as a starting point to understanding the meaning of the symbol.
An outstanding reference book.......2002-10-23
This dictionary of symbols and imagery is one of the best books I have ever purchased. It's an invaluable source for humanities students as well as for anybody interested in the meaning and study of images and concepts as showed in literature, mythology, legends, folklore and the like. It offers a wide range of terminology and specific vocabulary and refers the reader to a great number of literary works where certain symbols are represented. Maybe this dictionary by De Vries is not very easy to use and apart from that it is also expensive, austere, and hard-to-find; but I assure you that, once you begin using it, it's worth every penny you spent on it. Just buy it on an impulse and don't think about the price, you won't repent. It's a wonderful dictionary, I love it and I strongly recommend it to everybody.
Excellent reference.......2002-09-18
Ad De Vries' "Dictionary of Symbols and Imagery" is an excellent reference for those who are interested in the various symbolic meanings of objects, animals, mythological creatures and species.
I found it invaluable as a reference while I was studying English at University. And now, as a writer, I find it just as useful.
An intuitive dictionary.......2001-04-16
A dictionary of imagery as given by Ad de Vries gives the reader an entrance into often difficult symbols and the connections between them. The book leaves the reader a lot of room to distill his or her specific meaning (from allegories, metaphors, signs, types, psychology, myth etc.) from the sought after symbol. For that reason several meanings are given that may apply simultaneously (or in interconnection with each other) giving the user the necessary space for a very personal interpretation. The dictionary thus recognizes the fact that, when intuitively used, the meaning of one image can often lead to a deeper source which the lay person would not easily have distinguished. The book does have a possible drawback in that the material chosen from has been restricted to "Western" civilisation. However, a drawback can also be seen as a positive point in focus.

British photographer Barry Thornton has spent a lifetime devoted to black and white photography. He shares his warehouse of technical savvy in Edge of Darkness: The Art, Craft, and Power of the High-Definition Monochrome Photograph. If you have at least a working knowledge of basic photography, then you'll find this book to be full of helpful advice. Thornton has an immense amount of how-to wisdom and covers topics including focusing, lighting, tripods, printing, and much more. It is a precise book with incredible attention to detail.
The wealth of informative tips are illustrated with Thornton's photographs. Beautiful and rich landscapes so varied and full of depth that they create their own universe of monochromatic color. A stunning torrent of water crisp enough to be a cascade of crystal beads. Close-ups that feel like they were shot through a magnifying glass. Many students of photography see black and white pictures as a mere step on the way to the wonderful world of color. Thornton, on the other hand, reveres the traditions and possibilities of this medium and reveals monochromatic pictures to be a pinnacle of photography. This serious manual is a sure way to improve a burgeoning photographer's technical expertise. The book has 200 black-and-white illustrations. --J.P. Cohen
Customer Reviews:
Sharply done; might be more stars for you.......2007-08-03
The author's holy grail is sharpness, real and perceived. Type of film, type of developer, type of tripod and camera format, all slanted towards crisp and sharp photos. Nothing about tonality really: There are comparative photos only to show a difference in sharpness, except for a couple at the end showing bleaching techniques.
A good book for someone who takes architecture or landscape photos (with the requisite time to set up) and who also likes to noodle with their own developers.
The author's use of anecdotal stories to begin each chapter is a nice touch.
A must for anyone interested in B&W.......2006-03-04
Probably one of the best books on B&W processing I've read in the past 20 years. Too bad the first one published by B.Thornton "Elements" is no longer available. Thornton takes on one myth after another and clearly separates truth from myth in the B&W process flow in the darkroom. Just outstanding reading.... highly recommended.

The sort of book we need more of.......2005-10-18
What a delightful book! Once you've mastered Adam's beautiful books and the other books about serious zone system work this is the sort of book you hope for. Part memoir, part advanced how-to, and part philosophy put to paper in a delightful prose style.
Not exactly for beginners -- the author assumes you know the zone system and are serious about doing your own darkroom work. It also doesn't hurt to have read Anchell's Film Developing Cookbook and the Book of Pyro but not needed. The photos in the book are beautifully printed and yet the cost is reasonable. I hope this publisher will continue in this vein.
Terrific read..........2004-09-09
The photography I admit , is not brilliant or inspiring but the information contained in the text is excellent. This book is more for someone who already has a limited amount of knowledge og b&w photography. Excellent in depth information...one of only a few books on this subject worth reading.
Good...but not great... IMHO.......2004-03-18
The photos range in quality from very nice, to rather bland.
The information is often interesting, sometimes quite useful, but occasionally he writes lots about a technical issues which are not important. Some of the text might have been better left out or put into an appendix.
Thornton's commentary on the personal stories behind his photographs are sometimes sweet, but I have to admit that I occasionally felt like it was more information than I wanted. Every now and than I got the feeling he was trying to make a rather boring image seem more interesting by giving the story behind the photo.

Understanding Digital TV........2000-07-24
This book does a great job of explaining audio & video concepts. It's perfect for technical folks who didn't know much about DTV (Jpeg, Mjpeg, Mpeg-1, Mpeg-2, etc ) and computer aspects of such Detailed descriptions of algorithms, methods of coding & decoding. Highly recommended to everybody who deals with Digital Audio & Video production.
Nice job.......2000-04-08
This book is very good. Its four parts are very easy to search: analog audio, digital audio, analog video and digital video. They cover all of the existing aspects. As a university teacher, I use it for my course on Television Systems, but I think it is useful for an audio course, or a comprehensive audio and video course. I still think that books like these should have a spanish translation, for my students who do not read english.
Good for general knoledge.......1999-08-01
This is a Hybrid book - gives too much information to be a intructory book, but not enough information to be able to implement anything. the book covers a lot of grounds, from detialed description on analog television to general details on mpeg and more, and short intruductory to a lot of topics, like firewire, scsi, ethernet, pci , etc...
Very in-depth on all aspects of digital video and audio.......1998-06-23
The name is a little misleading - the book is really about television, and digital video (JPEG,MJEPEG, MPEG-1,MPEG-2 etc.) and digital audio and computer aspects of such. Detailed descriptions of algorithms, methods of coding/decoding. Highly recommended to everybody who deals with digital video production, digital video equipment design or just wants to know exactly how it works.

Customer Reviews:
High Level Overview, with several errors.......2007-07-19
I am a computer professional, and bought this book to learn how to get started in HDV. To my dismay I found numerous errors when the authors referred to computing. e.g. in one place they call RAID, Random Access Internal Drives, yet in the glossary they correctly call it Redundant Array of Independent Disks. They claim that USB 2 is faster than Firewire (not true, although the theoretical maximum speed in USB is higher, in actual use Firewire is much faster for sustained data transfer, such as one sees with digital video.) They also say that Mac files cannot be accessed from Windows. This is also not, strictly speaking, true (although it is not easy).
Thorough, current treatment of High Definition Video .......2007-07-09
This is an excellent book. It covers the topic of High Definition very thoroughly.
It is copyright 2007. At the time of this review (July, 2007) it seems very much up to date.
It reviews ALL the high definition cameras on the market today. It covers the best video editing programs (Sopny Vegas, Adobe Premiere Pro2, Avid Xpress ProHD, Apple Final Cut Pro HD 5, Ulead Media Studio Pro 8).
Dr. Pescatore does a masterful job of describing the various Digital Video formats. (Did you know that you can have digital video without it being High Definition)?
Chapter 5 deals with shooting with HDV, and could have used a few more rewrites. It seems to lack coherence.
HDV is the wave of the future, and you need this book to prepare you for this technology
Incredibly Approachable Book .......2007-05-11
With the advances in High Definition and HDV, staying ahead of the learning curve might seem a daunting task. "Working with HDV" is a god-send. Seven chapters of technical wizardry, yet it's incredibly approachable; allowing even the most novice of film makers to grasp it. This is a MUST HAVE for any one considering whether or not to shoot on HDV for your next project!
Great for the Non-Technical Person.......2007-04-10
Chuck Gloman has definitely helped me,a non-technical person, understand the basics of working with HDV. I have begun my project with a new confidence, and he has showed me this can be real simple.
Stunning. Really helps you understand........2007-03-01
I own this book and it is an excellent tool. The new technologies involved with Hi Definition and its baby brother HDV are tricky to grasp at first, but not as explained in this book. "Working with HDV" breaks everything down for you and then tells you how to use it. If you're looking to get started with HDV this is for you whether its for amateur video work or an honest stab at a Independent Film. Invaluable.
Book Description
* Real-world postproduction paths show how it's being done today
* Numerous HD tables clear up what format is used for which purpose
* Ample information on HDV
* Debunks myths and answers common questions about HD
Avoid costly missteps in postproduction and get it right the first time with this book. Written by an in-the-trenches professional who works with HD every day, High Definition Postproduction is an overview of this exciting opportunity for film and video production and postproduction professionals. High Definition production and editing is here and definitely a reality. High-def network shows are aired on a weekly basis. Several HD-only channels are well into their production schedules. HD is even used for major film productions and post production processes. However, unlike the existing 4x3, NTSC format, the HD world has many variables. This ability to choose various frame rates, frame sizes, bit rates, and color space options makes this an exciting, yet somewhat daunting challenge. The future may hold even more options as electronics continue to evolve and manufactures continue to exploit this format. Naturally, all of these options can lead to confusion and errors.
This book begins with an overview of the HD format and then covers commonly-asked questions. A chapter on shooting details how to smooth the path for post. Postproduction workflows, including the digital intermediate, are covered in great detail, and are enhanced by real-world examples.
From HDV to the high-end cameras used in Star Wars and Sin City, this book is your complete guide to HD.
* Real-world postproduction paths show how it's being done today
* Numerous HD tables clear up what format is used for which purpose
* Ample information on HDV
* Debunks myths and answers common questions about HD

Excellent book, Great Resource.......2007-09-04
Working in the Television world, and with more and more shoots being done in the mysterious HD format, it can often be confusing, understanding which frame rates to use and knowing what can be cheated in post, etc. I Bought this book and i found it to be one of the best HD books on the market. It has cleared up much of the confusion, misconceptions and has taken the myustery out of HD shooting/editing. I have already recommended it to many of my collegues and it is a huge resource, which can be refered back to again and again. MANY THANKS
i liked it, i wrote it.......2007-09-02
Mr. Redrocker is certainly entitled to his opinion and I am sorry he didnt like my book. I think he was looking for a different text: 2k and 4k are used for film post production. Also, my text is designed be an overview of HD and the post production field, not be cutting edge. The internet is far more current especially concerning a fast evolving technology like HD. I purposely designed the text to NOT be out of date. The DTV, HD, HDV information, examples and discussions are still valid. My suggestion for 2K and 4K information would be to look at Digital Intermediates for Film and Video or books like it. Steve Browne.
Disappointing and thin.......2007-08-25
Looked forward to the book, but found its organization rambling, and its content offering little more than a cataloging of the hd formats. It's endorsement of HDV is troublesome, given the problems of using that codec in post. No mention of 2k or 4k, and scant mention of the nonlinear systems that handle HD. Sadly, it already feels out of date.
Great introduction to HD technology.......2007-06-01
Bought this book as a starting reference for HD technologies. It gave me a great start and will be put in a handy location for future references. Already lending it out to another HD newbie.

This is a technology 'review', not a technology reference........2004-02-07
I am an engineer who purchased this book seeking low level details that described file and data formats such that I could write software which interpreted, analyzed, compressed, or displayed compressed video. This book is written for salesman and marketing people who need a high-level description of the various types of video compression and formats without going into any implementation deails. The front cover highlights on insided content is misleading. A totally useless book for engineers - save your money.
Great Book on Fundamentals of DV.......2003-12-11
I think this book is excellent and so far, the only text I have found that covers the technological fundamentals of digital video without resorting to complex mathematics. The section on the DCT transform is worth the cover price alone as it manages to explain a seriously difficult topic in simple language.
The comment in the previous review about MP3 is a little unfair in that MP3 has nothing to do with MPEG-3 at all and is in fact a subset of the MPEG-2 standard (which is covered in detail in the book). MPEG-3 was abandoned early in its development process and hence it is entirely correct that the reviewer should focus on MPEG-2 and MPEG-4.
A little dated, but still useful.......2003-12-06
This edition appears to be a slightly updated version of an earlier book published in 1998 called "Video Compression". It is reasonably well-written and contains a lot of information that seems still useful, but from the point-of-view of someone who doesn't know the field it leaves me wondering if I don't need a more up-to-date text.
For example, he mentions MPEG-3 in passing only as a failed improvement to MPEG-2 video, but isn't MPEG-3 (MP3) a wildly successful standard for audio? I get the feeling that when he wrote the book 5 years ago this wasn't something that would occur to the average reader to ask, but in 2003 it just leaves me wondering how MPEG-2, MPEG-3, and MPEG-4 are related, if at all.
Another minor nit: for an introductory text he has a bad habit of using terms before he has introduced them. This may be a product of updating an earlier text or simply bad editting, but for example, he uses the term "lossy" on page 5 but doesn't introduce the term until page 8. Even though I think I know what "lossy" means, I got stuck on page 5 for about 5 minutes trying to figure out why I had missed a definition for this term.

Book Description
Transporting Compressed Digital Video introduces fundamental principles and important technologies used in design and analysis of video transport systems for many video applications, such as MPEG and Motion JPEG video, in digital networks.
The subject of
Transporting Compressed Digital Video includes several important topics, in particular video buffering, packet scheduling, multiplexing and synchronization. This book takes a structured approach to video transporting technology, starting with the overview of video transporting and video compression techniques and working gradually towards important issues of video transporting systems. Many applications are described throughout the book. These applications include the video transporting techniques used in the broadband communication systems such as the digital broadcasting system for cable television and the direct satellite broadcasting system for digital television; transporting schemes for digital head-end multiplexing and re-multiplexing systems, video transcoding systems, and also the rate-control schemes for video transmission over networks.
Transporting Compressed Digital Video can be used as a textbook for senior undergraduate and graduate- level courses on video compression and communication, and as a reference book by communication engineers and video coding specialists. Both professionals and students will benefit from the information in this self-contained work on video transport systems engineering.
Customer Reviews:
Yahoo! Got a good one here.......2006-04-22
My team is working on H.264 video over a MPEG-2 transport stream packet. This book helps a lot on learning systems timing, which is hard to find from any books. I don't understand why so many books discuss about MPEG video, but very few tells about systems timing. Where are those "Professors" ?
Nice book.......2006-02-19
The content is original, which cannot be found in other books with the same topic. However, I think the book is overpriced.
I think it is a good book.......2005-11-01
A good book ... many sections are new to me ( I didn't find them in other books )... interesting topics ...
Good book, but over priced.......2004-06-30
The book is good because no one provided many details as given in this book. But just as other Kluwer books, it is over-priced.
Average and overpriced.......2004-01-14
This book offers a good intro for someone just entering the field of digital video transport; however, for a well exposed individual operating in this space, it is weak. As my background is in digital signal processing and comm systems, I have read and seen better materials, because of this I have to consider it as extremely overpriced. Its worth in my opinion is at most $80.00.
