Book Description
The measurement of colour is important in many commercial operations and in various professions. Colour is clearly of major importance in the textile, paint and foodstuff industries, but in addition, it plays significant roles in the lighting, paper, printing, cosmetic, plastics, glass chemical, photographic, television, transport and communication industries. The professions in which colour is important include medicine, art, architecture, entertainment and design. Colour is affected by the type of lighting, by the nature of objects illuminated, and by the properties of the colour vision of observers; the interaction of these features are fully described and explained.
This third edition contains the latest developments in the theory and practice of measuring colour and also has a series of Appendices that provide a review of photometric measures and tables of data necessary for colour computations, and a glossary of terms and full index. Also Recommended: "Beyond Monochrome," "Creative Elements."
Book Description
Explains fundamental optical principles that apply to photography, cameras, and lenses. Intended for professionals and serious amateur photographers as well as lens designers and optical engineers.

All the Optics Theory the Average Person Could Want.......2003-12-13
Depending on one's background in math and science, this may be a long slog or a quick romp, but the sometimes arcane drawings and formulas cover just about any question an average photographer might have about lenses and how they work. Kingslake did an admirable job of taking some very complex physics and making it accessible to the rest of the world.
Difficult read, wealth of info.......2001-04-12
This is one of the most awkwardly worded, most difficult to read books I have ever read. The diagrams are not all that clear either.
On the other hand, it has allot of difficult to find information that is relevant to every photographic and projection system. It took me about 6 months to plow through it but it was worth it for the understanding I got out of it. It is an excellent reference book. I would only recommend it to professionals and the most obsessed amatures.
It has good very technical info on how different types of lenses work, how to do custom adjustments to images to compensate to the viewing angle, resolution required for viewing distance, calibrating resolution, stereo photography, scanning slit cameras, swingback cameras, pinhole cameras, projection systems etc.
Difficult read, wealth of info.......2001-04-12
This is one of the most awkwardly worded, difficult to read books I have ever read and the diagrams are not always clear.
On the otherhand, it was worth the 6 months it took me to read it. The book is an education on optics with allot of hard to find information that is relevant to all types of photographic and projection systems. It is a good book to have for reference.

Book Description
"An intelligent and readable approach to the digitization of images. . . . A useful overview of a critical subject."
-- New York Times Book Review
Enhanced? Or faked? Today the very idea of photographic veracity is being radically challenged by the emerging technology of digital image manipulation and synthesis: photographs can now be altered at will in ways that are virtually undetectable, and photorealistic synthesized images are becoming increasingly difficult to distinguish from actual photographs.
Continuing William Mitchell's investigations of how we understand, reason about, and use images, The Reconfigured Eye provides the first systematic, critical analysis of the digital imaging revolution. It describes the technology of the digital image in detail and looks closely at how it is changing the way we explore ideas, at its aesthetic potential, and at the ethical questions it raises.
Customer Reviews:
Still a classic.......2006-04-22
It's hard to believe that this book was published more than a decade and a half ago -- and it's still relevant! I recently re-read this book after allowing it to lay fallow on my shelves for some time, and found that there's solid information in here, available with anyone with the vision to draw upon it.
Reconfigured Eye..........2005-10-17
An intresting book, however its language is so frustrating take some ginko before reading. The book is well researched and the images in it are phenomenal. The author has tried to prove his vast knowledge of the English language a little too forcefully. It is wordy and complicated to get through. If this is a required text for you, try and get a used copy, as you won't see the value out of it on the first read.
The consequences of digital.......2002-11-23
Mitchell's book might be thought of as two books. It is mainly about the meaning of photography at a time when pictures can be so easily manipulated and changed. It's really a philosophical discussion of truth and ethics. However, the middle section of the book is more about the technical aspects of 2D and 3D graphics, with explanations of the fundamental concepts that underlie digital images and compositing techniques, as well as computer modeled and rendered scenes.
And fortunately, both sections are great. THE RECONFIGURED EYE is valuable both as a reconsideration of photographic truth in a the context of new technologies, and as a book to help photographers, graphic designers, architects, and anyone working with photographs to understand how the basic functions of 2D and 3D software work and why. Though I wish there were even more photos of some of the paintings and photographs he refers to, there are many great pictures of paintings, photos, and rendered scenes to illustrate what he describes in the text. This is definitely one of the more thoughtful books on digital images and there's a lot of good stuff here to think about.
A Must-Have for Digital Artists.......2000-06-23
I can't believe that no one has written a review here of this essential book! Anyone creating, curating, writing about, or simply trying to appreciate computer-based art work should own this text. Mitchell weaves together theory, history, and technique to explain the fundamentals of this new field. His scholarship and knowledge of the area are unbeatable.
Book Description
Digital technology now enables unparalleled functionality and flexibility in the capture, processing, exchange, and output of color images. But harnessing its potential requires knowledge of color science, systems, processing algorithms, and device characteristics-topics drawn from a broad range of disciplines. One can acquire the requisite background with an armload of physics, chemistry, engineering, computer science, and mathematics books and journals- or one can find it here, in the Digital Color Imaging Handbook. Unprecedented in scope, this handbook presents, in a single concise and authoritative publication, the elements of these diverse areas relevant to digital color imaging. The first three chapters cover the basics of color vision, perception, and physics that underpin digital color imaging. The remainder of the text presents the technology of color imaging with chapters on color management, device color characterization, digital halftoning, image compression, color quantization, gamut mapping, computationally efficient transform algorithms, and color image processing for digital cameras. Each chapter is written by world-class experts and largely self-contained, but cross references between chapters reflect the topics' important interrelations. Supplemental materials are available for download from the CRC Web site, including electronic versions of some of the images presented in the book.
Customer Reviews:
Definitive resource.......2006-07-01
This is an excellent survey of the research literature on digital color. Those looking for an introductory book should be aware that this is oriented towards people interested developing products/algorithms/doing research - a friendlier introductory book is Maureen Stone's "Field Guide to Digital Color." For researchers and engineers in this area, it is a comprehensive resource. I taught a graduate level class on "Color Imaging Systems" and we used this as the primary text, which worked quite well.

Book Description
This book presents mathematical models that arise in current photographic science. The book contains seventeen chapters, each dealing with one area of photographic science, and a final chapter containing exercises. Each chapter, except the two introductory chapters and the last one, begins with general background information at a level understandable by graduate and undergraduate students. It then proceeds to develop a mathematical model, using mathematical tools such as ordinary differential equations, partial differential equations, and stochastic processes. Next, some mathematical results are mentioned, often providing a partial solution to problems raised by the model. Finally, most chapters include open problems. The last chapter of the book contains "Modeling and Applied Mathematics" exercises based on the material presented in the earlier chapters. These exercises are intended primarily for graduate students and advanced undergraduates.
Customer Reviews:
limited appeal - overshadowed by digital cameras.......2006-07-28
The potential audience for this book is very limited, for two reasons. Firstly, and obviously, it is for researchers in photography, who want to improve the performance of film. For example, by reducing the granularity or the surface tension. The book is not for the amateur photographer who maintains her own darkroom. Rather, it is for those developing new types of film.
The second reason for the book's limited appeal is the rise of digital cameras. The global customer base for film is shrinking continually. Granted, at some point, it will stabilise. All this means that few companies, even on the scale of Kodak, can afford to maintain an extensive research effort in film.
There is actually a third reason, which may be discerned from the book. The understanding of the physical and chemical processes in film is very mature. Film is a known technology which has probably been pushed to its performance limit. Future gains are likely to be very incremental. Whereas digital cameras (and this is a phrase which will soon be elided to just 'cameras') still have much room for improvements in their baseline semiconductor technology.
Book Description
Selected by the American Library Association's 'Choice' magazine as "best technical book", the first edition of this book soon established itself as the standard reference work on all aspects of photographic lenses and associated optical systems. This is unsurprising, as Sidney Ray provides a complete, comprehensive reference source for anyone wanting information on photographic lenses, from the student to the practitioner or specialist working with visual and digital media worldwide.
This third edition has been fully revised and expanded to include the rapid progress in the last decade in optical technology and advances in relevant electronic and digital forms of imaging. Every chapter has been revised and expanded using new figures and photographs as appropriate, as well as extended bibliographies. New chapters include details of filters, measurements from images and the optical systems of digital cameras. Details of electronic and digital imaging have been integrated throughout. More information is given on topics such as aspherics, diffractive optics, ED glasses, image stabilization, optical technology, video projection and new types of lenses.
A selection of the contents includes chapters on: optical theory, aberrations, auto focus, lens testing, depth of field, development of photographic lenses, general properties of lenses, wide-angle lenses, telephoto lenses, video lenses, viewfinder systems, camera movements, projection systems and 3-D systems.
Everything you need to know about still and moving image lenses in one handy volume
Be completely up-to-date with vital new information on optics for digital imagingBenefit from the expertise of this award-winning technical author
Customer Reviews:
Expensive, but worth it when you need it.......2007-05-20
If you have an amateur interest in photographic optics, there are excellent books for a lot less money. But if you really need the most in-depth information in a wide range of detailed topics and applications, this one is well worth the price. Though for $150 you'd think they'd throw in a hard cover, wouldn't you?
