Book Description
A native New Yorker and die-hard skeptic offers a personal look at the development of her medical intuition while serving as a trauma nurse in this riveting memoir. Twenty-five case studies with patients suffering from heart disease, breast cancer, prostate cancer, multiple sclerosis, adult onset diabetes, and other illnesses document the emotional and physiological causes behind patients' symptoms. The interaction of a person's energy system with health and illness is discussed in detail, as are the revelations that medical intuition offers about life, death, healing, and the existence of God. Instructive strategies for increased health and well-being offer ways to increase resistance to disease and reverse the progress of illness.

worth reading.......2007-07-30
Although this is a lot different from what a typical "scientific mind" is ready to adhere to, Christel Nani convincingly tells her story.
Very good book........2007-05-12
I too work in the medical profession in hospitals & learned about this book from one of my fellow coworkers. This book was a very good book & I really enjoyed Christel's case studies. I gave it 4.5 stars as I was hoping for more information on how to make changes in my life. This book is more a story of Christel's personal journey on becoming a medical intuitive.
After reading this book I wanted to read more of Christel Nani's book, so I got Guidance 24/7. That book focus' on how you can make changes in your life. I would highly recommend that you read Diary of a Medical Intuitive first, then read Guidance 24/7 on how to change your life. I can't wait to read Christel's newest book now.
I have read several of Caroline Myss' books & listened to her CD's. But Christel with her medical background has a very simple way of explaining things.
WOW Introduction to the Mind-Body Connection .......2007-04-28
This book is a WOW! I picked it up because I love reading about medicine, but I quickly found out this book goes way beyond that! It is a fascinating read about medicine, but in a different way! It's a really great introduction to the intriguing world of energy medicine and the mind-body connection. It is Christel's own story about growing into her amazing gift as a medical intuitive and has alot of great medical stories, but it has alot of information for the reader to take away and apply to their own life - positive changes in your beliefs will affect your health and your life in a positive way.
You will love this book if you are open to alternative therapies and realize that there is a whole other side to health, more than just traditional medicine. It is an excellent read - really accessible, and I have recommended it to so many people!
INSPIRING.......2007-02-08
When I first started reading this book I was amazed at the many similarities with my life's path.
Christel Nani relates her journey in a way that resonated with mine. Her book is easy to understand.
She lays the foundation for a simply devine way to tap into our past so that we can take a good look at what is
keeping us from following not just our talents but our deserving bliss. It all makes sense that if we are so uneasy
in doing and being what we do and who we have become that we can create our dis-ease. Having seen her in person confirmed how talented she is in "knowing" what ails us. She is all-inspiring.
Christal Nani is a true healer.
Found this book just when I needed it most.......2006-11-06
It's amazing that I found this book just at a time in my life where I was really questioning my connection to God. When I found this book it was so interesting and I could relate to so much of it that I couldn't put it down and I finished it in less than a weekend. Before I read this, my spiritual life seemed to suffer because I often questioned if God really loves me and cares about me. I felt very lonely, alone, and unheard. Christel explains why people feel this way and that there are ways we can treat this sort of "spiritual depression." Believe me, I have read a LOT of books by psychics, empaths, spiritual healing, Reiki, etc. A lot of stuff out there is recycled from previous authors. However, Christel's book is unique, no-nonsense, and to the point while still being very compassionate. I KNOW this is a God-send. This book has helped to give me hope and left me wanting to learn more about her healing techniques that I can practice on myself! In fact, talk about synchronicity: just as I finished reading her book, I found out she is doing a workshop next weekend less than an hour away from my home in California and this is a rare event! This is so meant to be and I am lucky to have found Christel's work.
Book Description
By telling her own poignant story, Michele Weldon Demonstrates that ultimately all women have the power to trade in the role of victim for that of heroine. This is a revelation of a battered woman.
Customer Reviews:
Terribly Disappointing.......2007-02-12
I read this book for a class on family violence. I have to say I did not like it. The author comes across as a spoiled rich girl who married a man for superficial reasons and then stayed with him because she wanted to keep up appearances. It's not heartfelt or emotional. She needs to always be a victim. She sells her late father's gold chains to get money despite the fact that she has $10,000 from her mother set aside. She then tells her husband that she sold the chains to make him feel guilty about it. She plays mind games like this with him and says and does questionable things with her children like dressing up as a dead Nicole Brown Simpson, slathering herself with fake blood, making her kids cry, and leaving the babysitter to explain the situation. She also tells the kids Daddy hit her. Why would you heap your huge adult problems on little children? I can't help but feel that she exaggerated and flat out lied in some parts of the book to make a more compelling story. This book is crap. Don't read it.
Author went through hell.......2004-05-23
I am not an abused wife or battered woman, but I can still appreciate what the author went through. She gives the reader a mostly detailed journey through her personal hell. Having said that I find it puzzling that she would choose to go to a costume party as Nicole Brown and OJ Simpson, complete with ketchup on her neck. It was in terrible taste and the author tries to explain it by saying "the reality behind the charade was too important for me to abandon". Then she goes to tell that others at the party thought it was in bad taste and her italicized comments are "that they missed the point." Not surprisingly they did, didn't they. Apparently, she thought they would immediately realize she was abused? She also admits her two youngest children were quite disturbed seeing her dressed like that and she told them it was a game and left it to the babysitter to explain. I, for one, don't look for hidden meanings in Halloween costumes and since Ms. Weldon stressed her love and devotion to her children and how she didn't want them affected by the abuse, I find her attitude about the costumes and her children very strange to say the least.
When she finally exposed her husband and divorce proceedings began, she lamented that hers would be the only children at the Xmas plays and school events without a father. What planet is she from? Does she not know the divorce statistics? I found some of these comments rather whiney and self serving.
She complains in the book of the duties of a single parent, oops, sorry, Double Parent. Ms. Weldon wants to make sure we understand her trials and tribulations. I understand that more falls on the shoulder of the custodial parent, but she certainly isn't the only Double Parent either. She has many family members and friends close by and her family stepped in to help her financially.
I understand that it is difficult for women to leave an abusive relationship and she writes that she is glad she stayed 9 years. Once again, I am puzzled that as devoted a mother as she is, she finds it okay to have put her three children at risk in this situation.
I'm sure I am going to be chastised for my criticims of Ms Weldon's book and I certainly don't mean to trivialize what she and other women have gone through. These are simply my observations.
The real deal.......2004-02-18
Michele Weldon does a magnificent job describing her harrowing journey through domestic violence, and she does so with clarity and unflinching honesty. Domestic violence crosses all socio-economic and cultural boundaries. Just as no two women are alike, no two violent marriages are identical; Ms. Weldon explains her own experience in such a way that anyone living through this hell will see some element of her own situation.
The cyclical nature of abuse, the cliche questions ("What did you do to make him mad?" "Why did you stay so long," etc.), the cliche assumptions (she suffers from low self-esteem, HE suffers from low self-esteem, etc.)are all carefully addressed.
By telling her story, Ms. Weldon has undoubtedly opened a door--even if it is just a crack!--for someone who really needs to know that there is hope for starting over. Michele did it...I did it...YOU CAN DO IT TOO.
Great for a woman who has left an abusive marriage.......2002-11-08
Thank you Michele Weldon for writing your journey through living and leaving an abusive husband. ---
Her writing is encouraging and honest. The writing style kept me reading. The way she put into words the joy of leaving the cycle of abuse despite the hardship that it may bring is just great!
This book could save many women from domestic abuse.......2002-10-26
Michele Weldon is an incredible writer. Each word, sentence, and thought was so rich and clear that I could see the picture, and know the depths of her inner experience. Throughout the book she composes the story of her life in such an interesting way that I was often left awestruck. Anyone could benefit from this book, whether or not they have survived abuse. She demonstrates how her life was changed in the aftermath of domestic violence and divorce.

Thank You For Writing The Disposable Male.......2007-06-19
As a 37 single male living in Hollywood, CA, your book provided me with an insightful and invaluable perspective into "how come" we men are where we are today without being "preachy" or redundant. By means of pragmatic logic, light hearted anecdotes and statistical analysis you paint an uncanny holistic "snapshot" of many sentiments that i too have felt about being "disposable" in modern society. Indeed, it is a relief to have some of these pent-up concerns finally unearthed and validated by someone with legitimate expertise on the subject.
Now that you have firmly established the "how come" part, I'm hoping you next delve further into the "how to's" of attaining, sustaining and mastering the more enticing role of "Indispensable Man". Perhaps a follow up book is in the works? I sincerely hope so...KS
DARWIN EXPLAINED, MORE OR LESS.......2007-02-01
I am an assistant professor teaching in a field related, but not directly applicable, to the book, which was brought to my attention by one of my students. I am, however, familiar with much of the science.
I would give this book an A for effort, with an overall grade of B+ (which I guess means 4 stars). The deductions are for the lack of footnotes (the author says above that they're coming to the book's web site, but there's simply too much here that's controversial to excuse the delay). The book also would have been better if opposing views were featured more often and if the language didn't occasionally sacrifice precision in favor of style.
That said, The Disposable Male is a very bold and highly-readable book. It may succeed where many others have failed and win the prize for conveying the story of evolution to the general public. It's been almost 150 years since Darwin's The Origin of Species was first published, and its implications couldn't be more relevant. The theory of evolution is still wildly controversial, at least in America, just look at some of our faithful school boards. This is where Gilbert shines. The impact of our ancient past, the crucial role our genes and hormones play, not to mention our biological predispositions, count for a whole lot, says the author, even in the way we live our hectic lives today. Near as I can tell, the underlying science is mostly within mainstream thinking and general references are sprinkled throughout the book. Deploying casual language, humor (sometimes side-splitting) and some vivid metaphors in the service of a very ambitious undertaking, Michael Gilbert lays out the Darwinian version of the creation story, educating readers about many crucial aspects of our modern existence. Placing the evolutionary spotlight he develops on contemporary times yields a diagnosis best summed up in his comment that, despite our social progress, "there are cavemen and cavewomen at the keyboards."
This ground has been tread by other writers. Men Are from Mars, Women Are from Venus actually uses evolutionary principles but it is several leagues beneath this book. Scholars such as Richard Dawkins, Steven Pinker, and Matt Ridley (as well as Robert Wright) aim their work above the heads of the ordinary American reader. Gilbert, who has a disarmingly casual way of talking about some very controversial things, gets it just about right, I think, even if he cuts the odd corner.
At its heart, The Disposable Male is a credo, a way of looking at life. The problem comes when you attempt to apply the philosophy to individual lives. There he, and the many thinkers in the field of evolutionary psychology, is on less firm ground. He's almost certainly correct when he argues that we've gotten too far away from nature. He also makes a point of saying that there is a great deal of variation within each gender when nature's laws are viewed in human terms. This can't be said enough and he probably doesn't.
Perusing the reviews here confirms my sense that this is a provocative, informative and entertaining book. It will elicit a wide range of genuinely heartfelt but not always sympathetic responses. To my way of thinking, that makes it a pretty good read. Here's how one thoughtful reviewer puts it below. "If there's a more accessible, broader, and enjoyable presentation of sociobiology/evolutionary insights, I don't know it." Neither do I.
Just one man's opinion.......2007-01-28
Not only was this book homophobic, the whole book was fiction strung together with quotes and studies that are not footnoted. Some of the studies I recognized and have been debunked. This is not to say that the topic is not a worthy one for discussion. However, the book was boring and amaturish. I was expecting the caliber of Jared M. Diamond or Sperm War by Robin Baker
A heterosexual male
At Last, Someone's Written it All Down.......2007-01-25
This book lays out a Darwinian view of life that says just about everything I think and feel about women and men, sex and romance and what family life is all about. In the first half the author takes you literally from the Big Bang to today. He lays out the evolutionary point-of-view in a funny and very interesting way, explaining how the original relationship evolved between the sexes. There are many interesting diversions along the way, about everything from how our brains developed, to the role our genes play in our make-up now, to the meaning of our sexual fantasies.
In the second half of the book Gilbert turns to our modern lives. Thats when he analyzes how our lives look when you look at it from this evolutionary position. How the lives of men and women today are in harmony with the past and how our lives now vary from it. This leads in to a lot of common sense ideas but also some controversial issues. In a way, its a conservative book but the more traditional values he puts forth are based on science, not on religion.
Feminists are going to hate this book but, as a woman, I found it very fair. In fact, he's pretty hard on men and often exalts the feminine values, especially in relationships. The author also makes a point of saying how these classical gender roles based on our natural history do not apply to everyone--that there are big differences among each gender. I highly recommend this book. You may not agree with it as much as I did but you're definitely in for an entertaining read.
Gender stereotypes recast in scientific jargon .......2007-01-24
The message of this book is simple: Women should step aside because the fact that they are doing "everything" nowadays (working and supporting families on their own) is leaving men without any direction or goals in life. This situation is also "unnatural," as men are meant to be the dominant sex and women are meant to devote their life to child rearing. How is this argument any different from that of conservative Christians? It isn't. It simply rephrases morality in pseudo-scientific terms: that which is "immoral" or "goes against God's wishes" is now "unnatural" or "disease-producing" (except for porn).
This book belongs to the bourgeoning genre of "masculinist" literature, a genre that argues that men, and consequently society as a whole, have become the victims of the agenda of radical feminists (I guess that would be me). The author tries to "seduce" women into accepting a passive and submissive role by telling us we have the moral high ground, that we women, with our lofty goals of marriage and motherhood, tame the savage (and very horny) beast called man when we insist on marriage in return for sex. While there may be some truth to this stereotype, it is not universal, nor is it a recipe for strong, lasting and sexually healthy, heterosexual relationships.
I would argue that if men are aimless, goofballs these days (and I don't think this is so), it's their responsibility to turn themselves around. Going back to the fifties: "no sex for you until you get a good job, marry me, and give me babies," is not going to give men a "real purpose" in life. Men, like women, need to find their own purpose in their lives. This is a human (existential) struggle, and for most of us it goes beyond (although for many it does include) the realm of our reproductive drives.
I've decided to give the book three stars this time (first review was not a hit), as as I found it thoroughly entertaining. No book has gotten me this worked up in a long time. I'm going to recommend it to all my "radical feminist" friends.

Customer Reviews:
An EXCELLENT book..........2007-05-16
No harping, no munipulation, just good clean examples of that Proverbs 31 woman that we look up to. The author brings it together and makes a beautiful thing.
Awesome Book.......2007-04-05
This is a great book for women! A friend of mine told me to read it and I'm so glad I did. It has truly helped me become a better wife...and mom!
Beautiful in God's Eyes.......2007-01-10
This is a very good inspirational book that helps understand all the qualities a woman of virtue can have and how to go about using them in our daily lives and towards our family. It is possible to obtain the virtues God intended for a woman to have even in this century.
Legalism and earned grace theology in accusatory, manipulative form.......2006-12-29
My wife's one-time supervisor, who turned out to be clinically mentally ill, gave my wife this book to "help" her. My wife read it with an open mind and was devastated by the horrible advice, accusations, and faulty exegesis provided by Elizabeth George. I read portions of this book myself and found it to be in conflict with a comprehensive understanding of God and scripture, and grace in particular. If you believe that you need to earn your salvation through good works in order to be beautiful in God's eyes, then this book's understanding of Proverbs 31 will make sense to you. If you believe that you are saved by grace, and it is only Jesus' goodness that allows you to stand beautiful in the presence of God, then you will find this book and its ideas to be, in large part, reprehensible. I do not deny that there are some pearls of wisdom in this book, but my overall impression is that the author is trying to manipulate women into following her interpretation of Proverbs 31 by using emotional triggers. Need I say that this is not right? Even if her interpretation of the chapter were sound, the ends would not justify the means.
Good book on Proverbs 31.......2006-09-13
Through this book, Elizaeth George has inspired and challenged me to be a woman that God wants me to be. She gave practical ideas on how to be a Proverbs 31 woman and not to follow what the standard of this world. She gave insight and practical ideas into each verse describing the Proverbs 31 woman. This book is both for single and married women. Nevertheless, I find myself learn more from it after I got married because after all this book is about being a virtuous wife.

Rucka knocks it out of the park! .......2007-02-25
First of all, ignore the review below. That guy clearly has issues. I never cared much for Wonder Woman, and was only familiar with the character from the JLA comics and cartoon. I decided to give the book a try when Greg Rucka took over, based on how much I've enjoyed most of the other comics he's written. This trade contains some of his finest issues, including the battle royal against the ancient menace of Medusa! Wonder Woman is clearly in the Superman class as far as raw power goes, and is a match for the Dark Knight himself for sheer willpower, and the refusal to give up for any reason. There are some spectacular moments in this trade, from the perspectives of action and character developmnent. Rucka does a fantastic job of weaving the superhero action around Wonder Woman's mythological roots. It's always interesting, and it never feels forced. There are several different artists here, but all do a good job. The covers by J. G. Jones are probably the high point, from a visual standpoint. There's a nice recap at the beginning of the trade, so you'll have all the information you need to dive right into the story, even if you've never read a Wonder Woman comic before. Sadly, the character has gone in a new, less interesting direction in the past year under a new writer, but these trades are readily available for all to enjoy. Give 'em a shot!
Book Description
When we discover our significance in the eyes of God,
we are empowered to develop the virtues that make a significant life--
a significance that is from Him, through Him, and to Him.
We all have insecurities about ourselves. How easy it is for us to get our sense of value from what other people think, from how we perform our roles--or even from trying to think better of ourselves. And society's constant messages that our significance depends on what we do and how we look don't help. Yet God has designed our fulfillment and meaning to come from Him alone!
He created you and gifted you with special purposes in mind--purposes that God accomplishes through you as He works in you. Donna Morley passionately shares what the Bible teaches about the key characteristics that God desires to cultivate in you--and that result in a significant life. She then goes on to offer thought-provoking, practical ideas for living them out.
So challenge yourself to know Him better and love Him more. Let your heart be encouraged by the powerful truths of how God views you. And discover that your significance comes not only from who you are in Christ, but from what God can do through you. In the end you'll enjoy a new sense of purpose, worth, and confidence--and the freedom to focus on the One who makes you significant.
For from him and through him and to him are all things. To him be the glory forever!

"Eyes of the Tailless Animals".......2007-02-10
While printed by a Christian publishing house, Soon Ok Lee does not devote much space to her conversion to Christianity. I would like to know more about her rationalization of religion after growing up atheist.
The book describes Soon Ok Lee's horrible life in North Korea's gulags. Born to a well-to-do family and given a good job, she is falsely imprisoned. She tells the horror stories that she and her fellow citizen-inmates went through. It's unfortunate that her story is consistent with other memoirs of North Korean citizens, because it shows the reality of the world's most isolated country.
EYES OF THE TAILESS "BEASTS" .......2005-03-09
EYES OF THE TAILESS "BEASTS" translates better. BEAST. BEAST. BEAST. ABUSING PEOPLE BEYOND WHAT WE CAN IMAGINE? yes. she has been there, seen it, experienced it by her FLESH. her calling is to write this book and tell the world about N.korea.
Oh wow........2004-04-24
It's hard to say that a book like this is good. Perhaps HORRIBLY informative is a better way to put it.
Amazing and Informative.......2004-04-01
The purpose of this novel is not only to reveal the atrocities that occur in the prison camps in North Korea, but also to explain the mentality of the North Koreans that enforce these crimes.
The author explains that because all organized religion is banned in North Korea, the cult of Kim Il-Sung and Kim Jong-Il takes the place of religion. The North Koreans have no concept of God, and instead, they worship a man and consider his state policies to be the divine word: "...Several books of anecdotes illustrating the infinite wisdom and love for the people of the Great Leader Comrade Kim Il Sung ... are like books of stories about Jesus ... Obviously it aims at binding the hearts of the people to their leader to obtain their unquestioning loyalty and obedience and unite them in a common faith. The quasi-religious element has been explicitly acknowledged."**
Soon Ok Lee's goal is not to explain her suffering in graphic detail, but to show what can happen in a society in which the morals of a mad-man are worshiped: Torture becomes acceptable, brutality becomes the norm, and no human life has value, except for those of the "Great Leader" and the "Dear Leader." [...]
The author believes that the only way to combat the ignorance of the brainwashed North Korean people is to bombard them with bibles, for it will teach them to question the status of their "godly" leaders, while it will also instill in them a respect for humanity.[...]The author lived through this, we did not, and she offers insight, ideas, and solutions to human rights violations in North Korea -- [...]**Quoted from "A Year in Pyongyang," : http://www.aidanfc.net/a_year_in_pyongyang_p.html
A Must Read!.......2003-11-22
This book opened my eyes about the true intentions behind the North Korean regime. This reclusive regime thought it could keep its political prisons secret to the world. However, thanks to such courageous survivors as Ms. Lee we now know what is really going on in the hermetic North.
Those interested in human justice must read this book.

Intriguing mystery.......2002-08-05
In 1956 Lis Benedict, a wealthy socialite, was convicted of murdering her husband's young mistress, Cordy McKittridge. Thirty-six years later, she is released from prison and goes to live with her daughter Judy, who testified against her at the trial. The daughter feels that her mother may not have been the murderer after all, so she requests a re-trial in the Historical Tribunal, a group which tries to redress old wrongs. Private Investigator Sharon McCone is asked to help with the case for the defendant, which is being prepared by the All Souls' Legal Cooperative, where Sharon works. Fearing that the trail is too cold to follow, Sharon interviews anyone who had any connection to the deceased or the supposed murderer. Tales of love and politics rise to the surface and Sharon begins to piece together a theory as to the real murderer's identity. This book is very suspenseful and had me guessing the murderer's identity up to the end. As usual, there is a complex plot and Muller does a masterful job of tying up all of the loose ends.
Pennies on Eyes not the strongest.......2001-05-15
After getting into Marcia Muller a few months ago I picked up Pennies, thinking it would be equally enjoyable. I was wrong, barely getting through half the book and then putting it away. Don't make this one a priority, it's slow and it's hard to care about this case or the people involved.
A Murky Mystery.......2000-08-30
This is the 13th "Sharon McCone mystery" I've read, so it goes without saying that I basically find these stories entertaining. This one has an involved plot about the bloody 1956 murder of a society girl. Lis Benedict has just been released from prison after serving 36 years for the crime and her daughter, Judy, has convinced Jack Stuart to take the case before the Historical Tribunal. Some anonymous threats suggest that somebody doesn't want the case re-opened.
The story kept me turning pages to find out what would happen next, so it was a good read. There are, however, a few downsides to this one. Ms. Muller spends a lot of space trying to give it a dark, mystical mood. What with all the foggy settings, mysterious shapes, foghorns in the night, and dark forebodings of PI McCone, the rather unsurprising ending is something of a letdown. Also, Ms. Muller is a traditional San Francisco liberal, which is her privilege, but she increasingly wears hers personal attitudes on her sleeve. The story would have benefitted from having forty or fifty pages of murky scenery and Ms. Mullers' soapbox preaching edited out. As it is, the story rambles here and there.
That said, it was still good enough to keep my curiosity up all the way through. Good enough for four stars in my estimation.

Book Description
This lushly beautiful novel glides smoothly between ancient and modern realities, from temple gardens to San Francisco bedrooms, Greek Islands and African riverboats, giving a far-reaching perspective on human desire and compassion.
In a farming village between Mesopotamia and Mohenjo-Daro, 2700 B.C., a young mother is about to become a medicine woman. Anarisha lies ill with fever that takes her into other identities. She lives out an alternative present, as priestess/courtesan of the goddess Inanna, and visits the lives of her own descendants―married multiracial filmmaker Michael Dagan; Michael's obsession, the beautiful Maria; and his "player" businessman father, David―global-villagers of the 20/21st century. Within interconnected worlds, each a netherworld of self-delusion, Anarisha faces her greatest challenge. She must transcend the power of earthly attachment to reach the farther shore, as the Buddha named it, of all-seeing compassion.
With exquisite voice, Lutzky provides a spellbinding experience of Anarisha's journey to serene awareness. Current intriguing knowledge of ancient archetypes, rituals, mythology and culture is interwoven with abundant insights into our last five decades--especially concerning nature and male/female relationship. Like beautiful eyes, this mesmerizing saga of the human family is both erotic and spiritual as it contemplates passion, impermanence, and transformation.

Another look at publishing today............2006-10-27
This is a "vanity press" book. If a writer such as Mrs. Lutzky cannot (it would seem) find an agent and that agent find a publisher, it merely indicates how distressed the book business is these days. Fortunately, yes, there are still many good writers and many agents/publishers to work with them. Of course, I may have this all wrong and it's a reprint of previously published material, but I do not believe that to be the case.
Whatever the case, this is no reflection on Those Beautiful Eyes nor the author. This is a stunning work of literature and I'm glad to see there are others who agree with my determination.
That Beautiful Book.......2005-08-20
Other reviewers have given an overview of the contents of this beautiful novel, so I will only make a few remarks about my own experience in reading it. I bought this book on impulse, something I rarely do. I don't read novels for entertainment, but rather to be touched deeply at the feeling core of my being. Very few novels do that, but this one did. My love for ancient history was fed by the author's fine evocation of life in 2700 BCE, a time I well recall from a lifetime of dreams and reveries of Mohenjo-Daro.
The characters of Anarisha (in 2700 BC) and Maria (in modern times) are the most vividly drawn, and well brought to life by the strong supporting cast. I read this book slowly, savoring every word. The book is well-written enough to allow this kind of deep immersion without becoming thin or shallow. The ending was perhaps a bit contrived, but still satisfying.
I just finished the book this morning and I still cannot separate myself from it enough to give a fully objective evaluation. For one thing, there were a stunning number of coincidences between the dates and places in the book and those of my own life. This added much to my reading experience, but could not possibly be shared by very many other readers. For (only a very few of many) examples: Born in 1945; life changing month of June, 1963; entered UC Berkeley Fall, 1963 (I feel I knew the author then, but I can't be certain); first child born 1974; an unexpected tragic death in 1998; and far too many more to mention without boring you. And the Dhammapada, that constant companion and guide of my life. Certainly a part of my appreciation for this book was that the author was somehow, inexplicably, writing the story of my own life -- not merely the sense of it, which can be found in other books, but the details, which I don't know how she could have known.
A remarkable literary achievement, this book is "almost aesthetically perfect" like Michael Dagan's films. Ann, by pouring your life into this story, you have accomplished your life's work. Now it's time to go beyond being a Buddhist, and to become a Buddha.
A timeless literary journey.......2005-08-17
A timeless and sumptuous exploration of the fluidity of the ages and our spiritual connections, THOSE BEAUTIFUL EYES is a true feast for the senses.
From ancient Mesopotamia to modern-day San Francisco, in delicate yet masterful prose, this novel depicts the lives and fates of a village girl in service to a goddess, a dancer, and a film maker and his wife, while reflecting on the corrupting influence that the quest for recognition, power and wealth has on the soul. Ms Lutzky's wealth of historical research shines through without interfering with the sublime clarity of her tale - one that carries deep roots in Eastern philosophies. A sensual celebration of longing and loss, of the fragility of love and our forgotten past, this is literature of the highest order - an intelligent, deeply powerful book that cannot fail to leave the reader yearning for more. Highly recommended for fans of Isabel Allende or Gabriel Garcia Marquez.
Those Beautiful Eyes.......2002-06-03
I thoroughly enjoyed Ms. Lutzky's "Those Beautiful Eyes". Slipping back and forth through time kept me on my toes but the modern characters were so involving that I found myself wondering about them and where the story was headed...much as one would absently think about friends and their lives.
Of course I identified with certain characters and their struggles with life and relationships. Very convincing stuff. I suspect that Ms. Lutzky has indeed a connection to another time and place...a must read!
Hypnotic, engaging and fascinating.......2002-05-11
A beautiful story of transcendence; transcendence of passion and will of a beautiful priestess in an ancient time to transcendence of time and space. A fascinating life journey that plays out in exotic sites across the world with seamless writing by the author. The colorful character of Anarishka stimulates the imagination. Anne Cowart Lutzky's writing is novel, intriguing, and absorbing. Highly recommended.
