Book Description
New Orleans designer Angèle Parlange shows readers how to transform their homes and lives in true "Creole style"–creating modern beauty out of personal heritage without breaking the bank.
Southern tradition blends with modern whimsy in this first offering from famed New Orleans designer Angèle Parlange–and the result is this extraordinary home decor book. Known for her fresh designs and unexpected blends of the opulent and the offbeat, Parlange brings her particular brand of "Creole thift"–the art of making beautiful, quality decorations out of heritage pieces without spending a mint–straight to the budget–concious reader.
From a fabric pattern inspired by vintage 1830s calling cards to shower curtains originating in a seventy–year–old college football program, Parlange's designs are eclectic, riveting, and utterly gorgeous. An integral part of her design philosophy is that everyone has personal mementos that can be transformed into beautiful "cocktail dresses for the home," whether it's a string of Grandma's antique glass beads or the faded material from an awful (but sentimentally valuable!) high school prom dress. With "trash and treasures" from her own home, Parlange demonstrates how each object can be used to create something that is both uniquely personal and richly lavish.
Filled with wry anecdotes, recipes, illustrations, before–and–after photos, and step–by–step instructions, Parlangerie will inspire readers to unleash their imaginations, unpack those dusty attic boxes, and transform old keepsakes into signature items that add spice and life to the home.
Customer Reviews:
The debutante thing got really old.......2007-08-17
I know of Angele Parlange and certainly know the home she grew up in very well. I was hoping to find something different in this book, something inspiring or something creative. I didn't really. Perhaps slightly. I gold leaf and enjoy that. I sew my own drapes. I'm loving the shower curtain and want to do that with pictures of my 3 sons, but I still was left like someone had torn out gobs of pages out of the book.
I left Louisiana a long time ago because I wanted to be my own individual and not tag on to the skirts and suits of my family whose blood is pretty close to blue and rich in history. The book made me thankful that I had gone because that part of the book that she goes on and on ad nauseum is what I detested. So, for me, the book was a let down.
Lovely Read.......2007-06-13
Seems that some people are disappointed that this is not a "decorating" book or a "Creole" book or a book about "thrifting," which is actually affordable. But who cares? This is a lovely memoir about growing up in the south. The author can certainly weave a story and the images she conjures up are memorable. I enjoyed the way she uses photos of the old family home and objects to complement the stories. Yes, there are decorating ideas that aren't very plausible to the average person, but I overlooked that and thoroughly enjoyed this book for what it is: an entertaining, creative read.
This book is even BETTER than I expected...........2007-03-15
I am only reading this book in increments of 5 pages because I want to savor this delicacy for as long as possible! Angele "offers up" the greatest tidbits-(Creole sayings, stories about relatives, N.O. recipes, gossip in the French Quarter)--- which I absolutely "get" because I have spent much time in New Orleans (not to mention reading Capote and Hellman for the "real-deal" atmospheric stuff)and Angele is the true Southern daughter of New Orleans! What great ideas! The acrobat coverlet! The cameo coffee-table!! And her description of the Hamptons reminds me of another one-of-a-kind lady: Little Edith Beale--Did you visit the Hamptons to relish that wonderful lady's life?( Maidstone club?)
PLEASE Angele, run for Mayor or Governor! And use this as your slogan:
"Ain't time a wrecker"
Fun, happy read for a Louisiana girl .......2007-03-06
I loved this book. I live about 40 mins away from Parlange and enjoyed reading about the Parlange family. It is a beautiful book that can be left out as a coffee table book. As far as decorating ideas, not nearly as many as I hoped , but the mirror is a great idea and I actually loved the shower curtain . Not my idea of thrifty though.
Creole Thrift: Premium Southern Living Without Spending a Mint.......2007-01-18
This book was not what I expected. It is a book based on a woman's experience finding old southern items from the late 1800s and early 1900s and decorating her house with it. It is interesting...not something that I can use for decorating ideas though.

New in Paperback! Mosaic ideas for every room
Mosaic Art and Style is a celebration of how mosaics can be integrated into our environments. Author JoAnn Locktov explores our fascination with mosaic art and illustrates how artists have crafted architectural installations as well as decorative and functional objects that have added immeasurably to living spaces. Readers will enjoy seeing how mosaic art can be applied to every surface imaginable. Mosaic Art and Style tells the story of how the projects were conceived and fabricated from the artists' points of view.
Locktov has forged special relationships with a multitude of artists, who have allowed her to feature their work in Mosaic Art and Style. Through these relationships, she takes the reader into the world of the artist and gives readers a behind-the-scenes pass into the artists' workshops, where she shares their personal thoughts about the creation and inspiration that imbues their work.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful Images.......2007-07-06
The beautiful images in this book show the full potential that mosaic works can be. As a beginner to mosaic art I found the pieces in this book to be a bit intimidating, but I also got some great ideas to use in my own work. This book did a great job at showing how mosaic work can be used to spice up any area in everyday spaces.
The Book of Endless Ideas!.......2007-06-19
Every page was full of beautiful examples of great mosaic variations. Great for countless home decor ideas for every room, outdoor and even commercial too. The pages are high quality print and vibrant color. I marked so many pages with inspirational project ideas. I've been cracking, gluing and grouting like mad. It's surely motivational. A Great find!
A look at the ART of mosaic ..........2007-05-19
A view of a wide range of mosaic art both public and private. To enjoy for the art itself and an inspiration for your own craft ...
BEAUTIFUL PICTURES.......2005-08-12
The pictures are absolutely beautiful. They give you much inspiration. This book also includes detailed artist profiles.
A must buy for the mosaic art lover.
Superb All the Way Around.......2005-05-06
It's not just that there are works from over 75 artists, or that the subject matter ranges from table tops to fountains to showers to a whole mosaic outdoor "living room" complete with a lamp, or that Locktov has tracked down artists from around the world who are so amazing you'll find yourself gasping out loud as you turn each page . . . all of which would be reason enough to buy this book. . . BUT, the photos are absolutely superb and, better yet, marvelous and multiple detail shots are provided. At last, a book on mosaics were you actually get to SEE things!
Equally important, the writing is just superb. Locktov clearly has a talent for interviewing artists and eliciting from them their very personal thoughts on their art. In just a few words, you can learn an incredible amount about an artist's motivation, inspiration, and life's work. You can then turn to the pictures of their pieces and think, "Yes! I see that!" What a gift.
So many artists. So many styles, materials, purposes, and venues. Wonderful words and images. Soulfulness and exhuberance and ART! Man, that's what I call inspiring!

Customer Reviews:
Living in the Arts and Crafts Style.......2007-03-09
Great decorating book with lots of ideas for furniture, wall colors and rugs.
Unique Book.......2007-02-11
This book has a very practical format. The fold out pages show examples of the various elements found in a typical Craftsman home. The pages are made of good quality paper to withstand use. The many color photos do an excellent job of showing Craftsman colors. The only problem I have is that it arrived with the spiral disconnected from the cover and I can't seem to get it back together.
Worst Book On A&C.......2006-08-22
This book is really a travesty. The captions to the very nice photos were full of errors and were clearly written by someone who had not a clue as to what was in the photo. Save your money. There are so many excellent books on the subject, nearly any one of which is vastly superior to this laughable "book" on the Arts & Crafts Movement.
A disappointing book, however brilliant........2005-07-25
Often, I've sat reading this book in bookstores across Boston, hoping for it to change its ways. It's brilliantly organized and the pictures are great, but the knowledge behind the framework and fandango is either absolutely lacking or off for a lunchbreak. The author totally ignores the differences between the English and American A&C aesthetics, which, if you are already familiar with the differences, might not make much difference, but if you are a newbie to the A&C Renaissance, will be hugely misleading. The architectural poetics espoused by Morris and Voysey are quite different from those of Stickley, Wright, and the Roycroft community. I would have expected much better from this author.
Exactly What I Was Looking For.......2005-01-06
This book contains everything that was promised in the reviews, and the photographs are exceptionally well done. I have read many books from the library on the Arts and Crafts movement, but this is one of the few that was worth purchasing. It is sure to be used as a reference many times in our decorating project.

Bungalows: Design Ideas for Renovating, Remodeling, and Building New (Updating Classic America)
ASIN: 076492494X |
Book Description
Bungalows of the early twentieth century were pleasantly small, well designed, and affordable. The same can be said of Pomegranate's Bungalow Basics books. Each book in the series spotlights a different aspect of bungalows, those charming and efficient homes that came to epitomize the Arts and Crafts style in American residences. Douglas Keister's photographs capture the results of meticulous restorations, while Paul Duchscherer's text provides concise information about bungalow design and history.
Titles in the series: Bathrooms, Bedrooms, Dining Rooms, Doors, Fireplaces, Kitchens, Living Rooms, and Porches.
Customer Reviews:
Handy intro for renovators or fans.......2003-12-18
Popular and abundant a century ago, the bungalow is today enjoying a renaissance as people discover the craftsmanship, utility, and charm of these little gems. Whether you're living in a masterfully maintained bungalow, are interested in restoring a bungalow to its former glory, or just a fan of good architectural or furniture design, Paul Duchscherer and Douglas Keister's "Bungalow Basics" series has a lot to offer.
This volume focuses on the living room, in many ways the defining and unifying element of bungalow design. A nine-page introduction discusses common design themes of bungalow living rooms, from central construction elements like placement of walls, doors, and fireplaces, to furnishing and decoration. Then follows about 50 colorful photos and illustrations, demonstrating these principles and approaches in action.
As you would imagine in a book this small, there's not a lot of depth to the discussion. Nor does any individual example receive more than one or two photos. And finally, there's no list of sources where an interested reader could find any of the items or materials pictured herself. So this is not, by any stretch, a do-it-yourself handbook. As the series name suggests, however, this is a focus on the basics. And someone who reads this will have a better idea of the theory of bungalow design, and more than a few great examples of the theory in practice. For the handy little resource this is intended to be, this title carries out its mission quite well.

Charming!.......2006-11-22
I do a lot of crafting so don't need a lot of directions, just incredible thought provoking, inspiring, make you feel like you are there breathing the country air, romantic. So... this is one of those books I sift through over and over again, love the book covers with the ties, love the fabrics and the country prints and the sigh...pillows! Absolutely adore this book, so glad I purchased in spite of the reviews. It is trully one of my very favorites what to sew, make with fabric books. Don't be fooled by the 'crafting vintage style, charming projects for home and garden' title, this is all fabric projects, not beeswax candles or other neat ones, but all dreamy blue flowers on white linen, pin stripe, country fabrics that dreams are made of.
Nice, could be better.......2005-08-21
This book has some really nice pictures, and I do love the fabrics she uses throughout.(Cabbages & Roses, out of England.)The book could have been more creative with it's project ideas, and DEFINATELY could have used better "instructions". All that said, I LOVED the ideas for covering sturdy boxes with pretty fabric and for covering books with pretty fabric.
This book is not worth purchasing........2003-05-17
A few pretty pictures and little substance. I purchased this book and her "Decorating Vintage Style". Very few ideas in either book - pretty cover, a few pictures, very little text. Neither are worth the purchase price. If you are looking for a vintage decorating or craft book, any other than these would be a better investment. For example, in the craft book, she shows, with very limited instructions and a picture or two, how to make a duvet cover. Then you use the exact same technique to make a pillow cover. For your next craft, you use the exact same technique to make an herbal slumber pillow. At 92 pages and just a few "crafts", you really are loosing when she spends a quarter of the book "teaching" (very loose definition here) you to use the same technique over and over. I think she was just using filler to get a book out. I was extremely disappointed in both of her books.
You are also given "instructions" on how to make a celebration skirt. Later in the book you find the exact same instructions on how to make a summer skirt. She did the same thing with a few blankets, too. You will not glean any new ideas from this book, I'm quite sure. And if you are a complete beginner at sewing, her instructions are not sufficient. If you are an experienced sewist or crafts person, you've probably already made everything in the book.
The book contains "30 stunning projects that will make a room loving and warm". They are:
Scalloped shelf edging, simple slipcovers, summer curtain, basin skirt (using velcro hang gathered fabric from sink), heart shape cushion (cut a heart shape - stuff), beaded pot cover (trim a piece of fabric with lace and beads - hang over a pot), storage boxes (purchased boxes covered with your fabric), fabric covered basket, greeting cards (fold a piece of cardstock - decorate - my children do this all the time), cozy cushions (instructions repeated throughout book on different projects), clothespin board (nail clothespins to a board), dog blanket, dog bowl mat (cover board with some oilcloth), herbal slumber pillow (same techniques as cushions), duvet cover (basically same technique as cushions), summer skirt, scented sachets - sew a tube, tie with a ribbon, laundry bags (sew a sack - insert a cord)), plaid teddy bear (cut out teddy bear shape - stuff - my children thought it was kind of ugly), celebration skirt (same as summer skirt but embroider with running stitches Merry Christmas (or something else) along hem), tab headed curtains (same as summer curtains basically), fabric roses (strips of unhemmed fabrics gathered into a "rose", gardener's apron (you make your own pattern from looking at her picture), linen-covered journal, frayed napkins (edge stitch pieces of linen and fray. She does not tell you to pull a thread to get these on grain as it will not turn out if you don't), lined picnic basket (using your own pattern cut fabric to line your wire or wicker basket), child's play tent (edge finish some fabric and hang over a clothesline), beach rug (edge finish some fabric). That's it. The same techniques repeated.
Any of my children's crafts books are cheaper and contain much more in the way of ideas and instructions.
Good points:
The photos are nice, as the author used to be a stylist for magazines. Her fabrics are pretty too. She owns Cabbages and Roses and uses her products throughout the book.

Mission accomplished . . . sort of.......2003-06-10
/Living with Arts & Crafts/ is a visually striking but very general survey of the style of decor which novices like me often associate at first with the prairie dwellings designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, but which in fact is far more variegated. This book is practically two different books. The first (worth five stars) consists of beautiful photography of Arts & Crafts-style interiors and thoroughly covers each room in the home as well as such functional and decorative accents as lighting and fabrics. The photographs are well selected, mixing the rustic with the modern in roughly equal proportion, and are captured flawlessly and reproduced in pristine clarity -- it is refreshing to page through a graphically intensive book so attentive to the quality of its production. The vapid text suffers in comparison, and due to its disconnect with the illustrations, seems almost like a different book (worth two or three stars at best) that happens to occupy the same page space. With few exceptions, the text does not reference the book's own illustrations, but, strangely, dedicates substantial space to describing (while /not/ reproducing) illustrations from early Arts & Crafts publications -- the effect is rather like reading stage directions without watching the accompanying play. This portion of the book emphasizes the early practitioners of the movement such as Gustav Stickley and William Morris, and, for all its failings, actually does succeed in communicating a sense of the philosophy underlying Arts & Crafts style -- its reliance on materials reminiscent of site, the organic connection of interior furnishings to the architecture itself, and an honesty in construction that eschews baroque flourishes. The book will not satisfy Arts & Crafts aficionados, but as an overview of the style for those conscious of their taste generally but who need informed guidance on particular projects, it is quite helpful.
