excellent work.......2007-08-23
Bruce Webber is the best photographer there is. Each picture makes you want to take the time to apriciate his work.
Master of his art.......2006-12-23
Bruce is the master of two dimensional space. As always, interesting and provocative.
A Coffee table book of mammoth magnitude..........2006-11-10
An amazing Bruce Weber portfolio and everything a good coffee table book should be. It's size is amazing pound for pound and filled to the brim with Bruce's ad campaigns for Versace, Abercrombie & Fitch, endless fashionista mags as well as a plethora of portraits. Quite a treat for the eyes for no one takes a picture like Bruce Weber. Never have I seen a photographer who can capture the ultimate essence of beautiful youth like this man. Indulge yourself with this one...
positively excellent.......2006-11-10
Probably the best photo book I have ever seen. Excellent quality and one to keep for life. In the Netherlands it would cost be 150. Bij Amazon just a little over 80.
BEYOND WACK.......2006-01-03
You have got to be kidding me. This stuff was tacky when it ran in magazines... so now a book of it? Whatev... not to mention the horribly CHEAPO paper and way crummy binding. What was the guy thinking? Filthy lucre, I suppose. Three to six months until it hits the remainder table. A better subtitle might have been, "How I Stopped Worrying About What a Decent Book Should Be". Save yourself the bread.

Worth the wait.......2001-07-17
I can remember when the book was first published over ten years ago, and I had a chance to go the the exhibit in Los Angeles. I balked at going and I regretted that chance. Now, eleven years later as a treat to myself, I bought the book without hesitation. "Bear Pond" has to be one of the most sought after if not the most referenced collection of male nudes. Bruce Weber is the master of photographing young men in the most natural and unaffected ways. Here, he manages to capture the innocence and provocativity of each of his subjects without seeming exploitative or lecherous. Although the book cost me much more than its original $50, I am so happy that I finally had a chance to add it to my collection of treasures.

Customer Reviews:
You're kidding... right?.......2007-03-14
This book (okay, it's not actually a book but we'll get to that shortly), arrives in a hugely impressive foil box, both figuratively and literally. It is only when you open this impressive box that you find you have paid $175.00 for a small number of pamphlets. Quite large pamphlets, but pamphlets nonetheless.
To compound their ignominy, the work isn't even that great (though that is obviously a personal opinion). The majority of the work suffers from being enlarged to fit the oversized pamphlet specs but a lot of the work, regardless of the size, is just mediocre, plain and simple. The work that stands out the most is by Karl Lagerfeld which certainly surprised me considering the distinguished list of photographers involved.
All in all, I would have liked to keep the box. Since that option was unavailable, I returned the item, beautiful box, pamphlets and all.

The Chop Suey Club.......2001-06-09
This was the first Bruce Weber book i bought & i was very pleased. In The Chop Suey Club, Weber chronicles the growth of young wrestler Peter Johnson for 3+ years as a late teenager. Bruce has a great eye for spotting beautiful men and his 3 year photologue, The Chop Suey Club, demonstrates this well. Weber captures Peter's beauty in everything from a speedo to exotic dress clothes and various states of dress & undress in between. Weber uses a wide range of poses and ideas in these photos with his usual emphasis on the erotic. Several poems, still-life shots, & photos of nature are also included in The Chop Suey Club, but the emphasis is on young Peter Johnson. The book is in a smaller format than most Weber books, but it is thicker & has more photos than most of his other books. Weber also uses color photos much more so than in his other books. The Chop Suey Club is the kind of photography book you page through slowly when you first get it & you then later refer back to again and again. I like this Weber book the best & i recommend it to those who appreciate male beauty & fine photography, especially when viewed through Bruce Weber's lens.
Well named, but the joke is on the buyer.......2001-03-06
Like the old joke about Chinese Food, "Eat and half an hour later, you're hungry again", this book leaves a reader with the sense that the money for the book was not well spent.
With Abercrombie & Fitch catalogues and at least a dozen fashion-oriented magazines featuring photography that's as good (or better, depending on your tastes and preferences), this book is not worth getting excited aobut...probably the reason it's out of print.
David Morgan, Patrick McMullan, Bel Ami, and several other photographers have far better 'product' availabl...
The Chop Suey Club.......2000-12-08
Finally Bruce Weber has assembled a collection which is heartfelt, sincere and passionate. If you skip a few vulgar nudes, most of these portraits are outstanding and lively. They key of this success relies on the intimacy and passion that every photo reveals. Each photo is a tassel in a perfect yet articulate mosaic that goes from fashion to portrait, into documentary. Both a document and an act of love that spans across five years. Not only the work is honest but it's technically far superior to any of his previous collections. By far his best collection and a must for every fashion photography lover. Well done!

My dog is on the Cover!.......2000-01-29
I would like to take this opportunity to share that Gentle Giants by Bruce Weber is very "special" because it is our beautiful grey Newf, Kady as the cover dog for Bruce Weber's "Gentle Giant". This is definitely a collector's book for anyone passionate about dogs and particularly, Newfies. Kady and our Landseer, Jon-Luc (pictured on plates 100, 102 & 103, spent 3-days with Bruce at an estate in Marblehead,MA. We were ecstatic! We will never forget the excitement and glowing pride, watching Bruce photograph role after delightful role of our dogs with passion and compassion. Bruce has formally acknowledged the misprint in Gentle Giants. He has sent signed pictures with an apology. The newfs pictured on the cover and plates 100, 102, 103 are Rossland's Kady in the Mist & Seaward's Sebastian Sir James (Jon-Luc). Kady continued her career on the cover of Rhoda Lerman's book, In the Company of Newfs. Jon-Luc went on to appear in Ralph Lauren's Polo Expedition, American Express and Timberland Ads! Thanks to Bruce, we have a lifelong, cherished memory. Kady has sinced crossed Rainbow Bridge. Jon-Luc is 9 years old and resting comfortably on his dognapper. Bruce, you made a special difference in our loves. We will always appreciate your warmth, compassion and love of dogs, especially the Newf! Fondly, Maureen & Gary Ross and the Pack!

Great pics of Newfs; can do without naked men........1998-03-30
I own a Newfy and can appreciate how dificult it is to photograph black dogs. So many of these pics make one smile; but the naked men are laughable. What is it I don't get here? Hardcover, family-oriented, coffee-table-type book, with these naked guys running around. How artsy?! Text is sadly lacking. For example, the section on training rescue newfs is visually exciting and has great potential, but it begs so many more questions.
It is the best book with Newfoundland dogs pictures.......1998-03-11
I found this book by chance. As I own a Newfoundland, I bought it, but I never could imagine how lovely it was. If you have a Newfoundland, you would like to have this book, you could read one and another time the text, and you will enjoy with the pictures. I wish that my Newfy was on this book.
WONDERFUL!!!! PRECIOUS!!!!.......1997-11-21
I have the fortune of owning this book, and it is really a truly wonderful book. For anyone who loves newfs, they have to have this book. It is a big beautiful hardcover. Nothing flashy, just good old fashioned pictures of newfs! Puppies! I love it and would not part with it for the world!
Book Description
The role of genetic inheritance dominates current evolutionary theory. At the end of the nineteenth century, however, several evolutionary theorists independently speculated that learned behaviors could also affect the direction and rate of evolutionary change. This notion was called the Baldwin effect, after the psychologist James Mark Baldwin. In recent years, philosophers and theorists of a variety of ontological and epistemological backgrounds have begun to employ the Baldwin effect in their accounts of the evolutionary emergence of mind and of how mind, through behavior, might affect evolution.
The essays in this book discuss the originally proposed Baldwin effect, how it was modified over time, and its possible contribution to contemporary empirical and theoretical evolutionary studies. The topics include the effect of the modern evolutionary synthesis on the notion of the Baldwin effect, the nature and role of niche construction in contemporary evolutionary theory, the Baldwin effect in the context of developmental systems theory, the possible role of the Baldwin effect in computational cognitive science biosemiotics, and the emergence of consciousness and language.

Like Attending a First-Class Conference.......2007-05-29
In the history of biology, Lamarkians were the humanists who believed that experience could enrich the genetic structure of organisms. When Weissmann proved the continuity of the germ line, which implies that phenotypic learning could not be incorporated in the genes of an organism's offspring, it led to panic for the Lamarkians. James Mark Baldwin, the developmental biologist, Lloyd Morgan and Conrad Waddington all jumped to fill the breach with a variety of mechanisms that would allow some causal arrow from learning to genes to survive the "continuity of the germ line."
Of course, phenotypes, not genotypes, are selected, so there is ample room for plastic phenotypes to be selected, and the genetic basis of their plasticity or ease of learning to adapt to particular environments to become fixed in the gene pool. However, until Dawkins' "extended phenotype" and more recently Odling-Smee, Laland, and Feldman's "niche construction" theories were developed, the whole matter was quite vague.
This conference volume outlines the history of the Baldwin Effect, and the effect of the interchange of expert opinion on the reader should be pretty clear: niche construction and in the case of humans, gene-culture coevolution are the intellectual heirs of the Baldwin Effect and are extremely important biological phenomena. Paul Griffiths' and Terrence Deacon's contributions to the volume make this crystal clear. Numerous evo-devo types also want to claim a piece of the Baldwin effect, but despite reams of material on how development affects the gene pool, I remain unconvinced. But, perhaps that's my limited perspective. At any rate, if you know a fair amount of evolutionary and developmental biology, this is really quite a fine book to read. Perhaps even better than attending the original conference.

Beware of superbookdeals seller.......2006-06-19
If you want to buy the book, go ahead, just be careful of superbookdeals, they take your money but don't deliver and don't answer emails. Caveat Emptor.
Falls Way Short of its Claims and High Price.......2006-06-18
I'm sorry, but this book simply does not live up to its title. If you really want to learn trading it is only best done by gaining experience and understanding both technical analysis and market psychology. I find it amazing that big name publishers rush to publish any book when a professor is behind the name although we all know they have no expereince in the market and they are speaking on theory, which wont get you anywhere in the market. In addition, mutual fund and money managers do not know how to trade. The just buy buy buy and rebalance. For non-professional traders to write a book about trading is about as appropriate as me writing a book on physics and I have not had physics. Trading is an art, not a science. Trading is based on behavioral indicators not on theory.
Dont think that big name publishers always provide quality books because they usually do not. All they are is marketing machines thats why they love to publish diet books, books written by celebrities and other useless material that is marketed to make you think reading their book will change your life! If you want really good books you have to search very hard and they are almost always publsihed by specialty shops. The big publishers have one goal--to sell as many books as possible. Therefore, the quality of their books usually matches a mass audience and that is never good for a difficult topic because you will get short-changed.
Piece written for London Business School website.......2006-06-11
Seat-of-the-pants trading is history. Data from Neonet, an agency broker, show that over 28 percent of trades in U.S. stock markets are the result of automated trading strategies. The Boston-based Tabb Group forecasts 34 percent annual growth in global money managers' use of trading algorithms.
So, in an industry increasingly governed by computerization, algorithmic trading, and fully electronic markets, an appreciation of the theory and operations of equity trading is critically important. A new book from Bruce Weber, Professor of Information Management at London Business School, along with Professor Robert A. Schwartz of Baruch College in New York, and Reto Francioni, CEO of Deutsche Börse, offers a comprehensive course in equity trading for professional and serious independent traders.
The world's equity trading markets are large, complicated, and constantly evolving. In this new book, The Equity Trader Course, Professor Weber and his co-authors manage to give a comprehensive overview of the final, critical step in turning market ideas into realized profits. Even in the richest and deepest markets in the world, liquidity is costly, and hidden trading costs can erode profits. Salient advice in the book covers how to place orders optimally, how to react to volatility, and ways to avoid moving the market when buying or selling.
The book includes insights into trading, liquidity pools, and markets, and tools to apply when using auctions, submitting limit orders, and measuring trader performance. The role of technical analysis and the advantages of algorithmic trading are covered. Each chapter of the book teaches both novice and experienced traders how to be adaptive and successful in their purchasing and selling decisions. The Equity Trader Course comes with a companion CD containing the TraderEx simulation, which walks readers through the dynamics of various market structures, and the mechanics of trading - from entering orders to monitoring the market, and profitably exiting a position.

B. Weber revolutionized the meaning of poor images into arts.......2002-01-04
As with most of Bruce Weber's books, his style is the same from the beginning and had not changed a bit. Though I admire many of his good works (and in fact had purchased a lot of his expensive books), a good 70% of images in his books were the same type of images we discard at photo school developing labs and the same type of images our instructors at Photo 1 asked us to improve. Reasons: out of focus, bad composition, low quality grainy and muddy images. Well, it's the name that sells, you know. It takes a lot to be Bruce Weber. Honestly, his works for Abercrombie and Fitch were much better than the books. If I were to make a name like my idol, my works will sell, as well. And I am not kidding.
Good book by Weber but pricey.......2000-04-26
As a photographer who really looks up to and loves the work of Bruce Weber, I know I have a strong bias for anything he does. However, this book is a great look inside Weber's world and is godo with the interviews as well. My only problem is the price, ... there are probably better books for those that really get into Weber photography and are looking to maybe buy just one book, such as the out of print Chop Suey Club, etc., that even cover his work with Abercrombie and Fitch, and are cheaper at the same time. I would only recommend this book for someone who wants to know more than your basics about what Weber is about, and price is not an issue, otherwise go for it!
Book Description
Grace Coddington's celebration of fashion has danced along its cutting edge for over 30 years. Abandoning a highly lucrative career as a leading model on the 60s London scene, alongside such swinging contemporaries as Jean Shrimpton and Twiggy, Coddington signed on in 1968 as a junior fashion editor at British Vogue. She quickly established herself on the other side of the camera, coordinating photo shoots with David Bailey, Cecil Beaton, Helmut Newton, Sarah Moon, and the eccentric Guy Bourdin. A close working relationship with royal photographer Norman Parkinson produced a series of startlingly vibrant location shoots that have come to be considered classics. At British Vogue, Coddington also introduced the sweeping narrative epic, a familiar feature of her work nowadays at American Vogue, where she has been creative director for the past 14 years. GRACE: Thirty Years of Fashion at Vogue is not only a collection of Coddington's greatest work, it is a visual reminiscence of her life in fashion.

you never sent this item to me.......2006-07-31
I ordered this, along with another book. You shipped the other book and cancelled my order for this book, which was the book I really wanted. I'm not happy with the ordering process on this item and cannot comment on the book since I've never actually seen it.
Cool fashion book.......2003-07-17
This book is cool. Vogue is definitely the place to see all the latest and greatest fashion trend and the art of photograhing and show them.
Very helpful & informative.......2003-04-07
I just recently purchase this book, at a time when I was getting a bit discourage as a stylist. It helped me to realize that there are good days and bad days and to keep my head up! I believe that the book chosed me at that very moment. It is very helpful in terms of preparation for production shoots. Also informative in knowing the different ways each photographer preps and how Mrs. Coddington binds with each photographer's concepts. I have had the pleasure of working with Mrs. Coddington as a model, and I can confirm that she is a down to earth person which makes one feel comfortable when working for her. Thank you for sharing your 30 yrs!
stylist supreme.......2003-01-31
Grace: Thirty years of fashion in Vogue is a delightful collection of some of the most memorable and influential fashion photographs since the nineteen seventies.....all of them touched by the imaginative and chic eye of super stylist and editor Grace Coddington. The range of fashion fantasies is impressive. From the tough erotic chic of helmut newton, whimsical femininity of sarah moon on thru the joyful, innocent sexiness of bruce weber, Miss coddington helps each image become something entertaining and memorable. The printing is terrific , layouts are elegant , plus, perfectly boxed in a delicious and very chic pumpkin. Well worth it's luxe weight....

Book Description
Peter Mitchell, winner of the 1978 Nobel Prize for chemistry for his chemiosmotic theory, was a highly original scientist who revolutionized our understanding of cellular metabolism and bioenergetics. This is the only full biography of Mitchell, and it should be of considerable interest to biophysicists, biochemists, and physicians and researchers focusing on metabolism, as well as historians of medicine and biology.

wanderings.......2003-06-17
I picked up this book because I had some familiarity with the subject matter having worked in that field of biochemistry in the late '60s. That is probably the main reason I read the whole thing and enjoyed it.
This is very much a scientific biography. It's an interesting story of the evolution a scientific idea (The Chemiosmotic Theory) and how that idea came to be accepted by the scientific community. The originator of the idea, the imaginative, ambitious, passionate Peter Mitchell, had to fight for many years to see his theory finally accepted.
I was disappointed, however, that the book did not paint a fuller picture of Mitchell who had many interests outside of science which are (frustratingly) alluded to - music, architecture, farming, family - but never explored. For example, the authors state that family life was very important to Mitchell but give no examples of how a highly motivated scientist/entrepreneur managed to fit it in. Nor is there any sense of what domestic life was like living in an isolated research institute/manor/farm. In my opinion, if these aspects of his life had been more developed, the book would appeal to a wider audience and the reader would come away with a fuller appreciation of the man.
Technically, it is rather a choppy book. Each chapter is divided into subchapters, which detracts from its cohesiveness. Repetition of some points also gives the sense that the book was pieced together.
However, I did read the whole thing and found it an interesting study of how 20th century science works - or works imperfectly.
