Disappointed!.......2007-09-25
I felt I wasted my money on this CD audio book. It feels like it's "CUT & PASTE" from book 1. Book 1 is excellent and I've listened to it many, many times, so the minute he begins a new topic, it's verbatum from book 1. I thought this Part II would expand on book 1 and cover topics that hadn't been discussed.
Ask - Answer - Receive.......2007-08-20
We pray for help every day but we don't listen - we get answers and inspirations every moment but take no action - we get great offers to change but we fear taking the first step ... This set will teach you the process then all you need to do is be HAPPY and follow the process ... you are special you are loved ... now lets teach our children these principles and change the world forever ... I love it ...
"Ask and It Is Given" ... on Speed.......2007-07-25
I LOVED the book, have read it several times, and I pick it up every day in fact in the way others use the Bible. I ordered the cd so that I could listen to it in the car and on my Ipod for daily inspiration. I'm wildly disappointed to report that it is read sooooooooooooooo fast that I can barely comprehend it -- this from someone already completely familiar with the book. I've never heard an Audio book read more quickly; it's like the author is speed reading it. I couldn't be more disappointed.
Ask and it is Given Part 2.......2007-07-11
Don't buy this item if you have the book Ask PART 1
Part 2 is in the book and also on CD - so if your looking
for part two GET THE BOOK
I purchased the book and CD from Amazon and since I opened the CD's you can't return them so I am stuck with two copies. Contacted Esther Hicks thru her web site and was offered something comparable, also to incur more shipping and handling and no even exchange was offered.
Just beware when you buy from Amazon, there is no guarantee from the publisher, distributor and author themselves if you don't buy it from them direct - so be clear on your point of purchase and what you are giving up by purchasing thru Amazon. I have nothing against Amazon and have been a long time customer, I do feel they should place a disclaimer on their site regarding point of purchase - voids guarantee.
Introducing Abraham should be first........2007-06-27
"Introducing Abraham - the secret to the secret", (DVD) should be seen first and then the "Ask and It is Given" next. They are both great.
Book Description
This leading-edge CD by
Esther and
Jerry Hicks, who present the teachings of the nonphysical entity
Abraham, is about having a deliberate intent for whatever you want in life, while at the same time balancing your energy along the way. But it’s important to note that the awareness of the need to balance your energy is much more significant than goal-setting or focusing on ultimate desires. And it is from this very important distinction that this work has come forth.
As you come to understand and effectively practice the processes offered here, you will not only achieve your goals and desired outcomes more rapidly, but you’ll enjoy every single step along the path even before their manifestation. As such, you’ll find that the living of your life is an ongoing journey of joy, rather than a series of long dry spells between occasional moments of temporary satisfaction.

Delving deeper and deliberately.......2007-10-01
It took a closer reading of this book to fully appreciate it, having read 'Ask And It Is Given' and 'The Law of Attraction.' If you are new to these teachings, I recommend, you read one of those first in order to fully appreciate what is presented here. This book focuses on the NOW, in making sure you stay aligned with your higher non-physical self(and thus source energy/God/universe), moment by moment. Exercises and examples are offered to help you get back on track towards alignment no matter what your emotional state. Yes, there is some repetition from other books, but that is what it takes to "get it". And while I was initially disappointed that some of the same processes discussed in 'Ask..' were repeated here, I realized that these were specifically chosen given the theme of this book, and the fresh examples offered, provided another incentive to use them! For those who have understood the basics, and then get stuck occasionally, or want to ratchet up their alignment with source, this book is a must. For me, it reinforced some fundamental points:
i) that more important than want you desire, is how you FEEL about that desire, and the vibration you offer.
ii) feeling good about something or a situation is more important than being right or justified in your negative emotion/judgment of it.
iii) nothing is more important than feeling good.
(For those who are critical of 'feeling good' or see it as selfish while African children are starving, recognize that unless we feel good, we are unable to be of benefit to others or focus beyond our immediate needs, let alone anyone else's. Also, as we move up the emotional scale toward peace/love/joy, our perceptions of 'self' is also more likely to change to embrace all beings as part of the interconnectedness that is the Universe, and one with Source. This is more likely to result in creating more compassionate deliberate intentions and manifestations to benefit all beings!
Ultimately though, this book is about making the most of our time in this physical plane, using our consciousness and thoughts to keep us in alignment with source energy in order to experience joy and abundance.
Interesting, but..........2007-09-08
The channeled Abraham says nothing you couldn't actually have thought of yourself, and at times I get the distinct feeling that I have read this or that almost word for word elsewhere in much older books.
Now this may be 'coincidence' but we all know that pure coincidence does not exist. I doubt very much that all of its content was channeled, it just doesn't have the right feel and twist of phrasing about it.
Nevertheless, a nice book as an introduction for the novice to the magical approach of living life. To those new to the material this book can look like be and end all of learning, but it isn't, and there is much more interesting stuff out there. Once you have mastered the basics - feel free to progress and have an adventure in cosnciousness. Don't just consume, be.
I can also recommend The Wizards of Consciousness: Making the Imponderable Practical and any of the Bartholomew books like "I Come As a Brother": A Remembrance of Illusions. these too are easily accessible.
Abraham & Vibrational Energy Concepts .......2007-09-05
This is a very good book on CD, and is life-changing material, if you are willing to believe in something that may sound VERY different to you. Most people do not believe in this way. "The Amazing Power of Deliberate Intent" is the entire CD. Part 1 is "Living the Art of Allowing" and is a collection of 4 CDs, narrated mainly by Jerry Hicks. Part 2 is "Living the Path to Joy Through Energy Balance" and is a second collection of 4 CDs. You really want to buy both packages to get the entire book.
Abraham is a collective consciousness who speaks to Esther. She then relays the material. The material speaks primarily of metaphysical energy and its relationship to all that there is. It goes in-depth into manifestation by aligning your personal vibrational energies to match what you really want. Again, I know that's a hard concept to swallow, but that is the Law of Attraction. You really DO get what you think about. I have been studying metaphysical energy for about the last 7 or 8 years and I have seen the evidence soooo many times. Unfortunately, because of fear and control and many other negative personal vibrations, people usually think about what they DON'T want and that is what they manifest. Put simply, instead of seeing their car running smoothly on a log trip, they worry "What if it breaks down?". Instead of thinking about money in a positive way, they usually think of a LACK of money, and generally worry about it. So, they usually get what they do NOT want.
Anyway, this set of CDs not only explains the concept very well, but gives real-life examples and examples of the proper (aligned) thinking versus the non-aligned (improper) thinking, so you can begin to change your vibration to attract what you DO want. Like I said though, you need both CDs and an open mind, a VERY open mind. You also need to really work at this vibrational change to achieve successes with it. Even when you do achieve successes, it's hard to believe because we were just not conditioned to believe this way.
All that said, it's a great product and these are not the only authors talking about vibrational energy matching to manifest. What they say is right on target.
CD1, this set is slightly less than 2 and a half hours. CD set 2 is slightly more than 2 and a half hours. Both sets together total over 5 hours of audio book material which you can easily listen to in the car on your way to work. These 8 CDs have the potential to change your life.
Excelent service........2007-08-30
This audio book is wonderful. I can listen while doing other things and the information is invaluable.
Great Stuff, it works!.......2007-08-24

Good, but not the best I've heard from Abraham-Hicks.......2007-09-25
I have listened to a few recordings by these authors and find this particular recording not as superior as Ask and It Is Given, Part II, The Processes. I would not purchase this item again if I could do it over.

Further Insight Into The Laws Of Attraction.......2007-08-08
I have purchased and listened to all the Abraham-Hicks material available and next to the actual "Laws Of Attraction" CD, this CD has to be the most insightful in furthering the distinctions of the actual Laws of Attraction. It has been very useful to me as a coach of the material and has helped my clients immensely. I would recommend it to any student of the Laws of Attraction to help give them a better understanding of how the laws work.
More Positive Abe.......2007-07-31
This a good continuing series of workshop excerpts on various challenging life situations. Read by Jerry, this adds a little more color and warmth to the material.
Great Stuff.......2007-07-16
This is a wonderful tool, it helps you stay focus. I recommend it to everyone.

You MUST READ: The Greatest Salesman in the World: Part II The End of the Story.......2007-08-30
What a special person! This is someone who changed peoples lives by what he wrote! He was a brilliant author and person. I believe Og Mandino will live forever in our hearts, minds and spirits! This book as well as anything he wrote would be very much worth your time to own in your library.
Another good one........2007-07-19
If you've never read one of Og Mandino's books, you should. They are inspiring for success minded people. I find that reading these types of books often, keeps my thoughts focussed where they should be. Most of his books reiterate the same principles, with a new idea here or there. You've probably heard these principles before, but they are presented nicely here. Great value for the cost of this book.
Excellent.......2007-01-11
It will take your breath away and bring you back from just going thru the motions to living in happiness. Truly touched by the hand of God, as with all of Mandino's work, a true gem.
Sensing Repetition.......2006-07-30
The original Greatest Salesman in the World follows the great salesman Hafid's life before and after he reads the 10 scrolls of selling success. In this quite similar sequel, the scrolls of success are lost in a shipwreck, and Hafid is divinely called to write 10 new scrolls in order to replace the old ones.
The new scrolls emphasize these main points:
-Never again will I belittle myself
-I won't start the day without a map
-I will be enthusiastic
-I will never be unpleasant to others
-I will look for triumph in adversity
-I will do my best on every task
-I will focus completely on the task at hand
-I will never wait for opportunity, instead I will seek it
-Each night, I will reflect on what I did, and think about how I can improve
-I will pray to the creator in success and failure
Some of these points look VERY similar to the points made in the first book, so much that I was tempted to give this book 3 stars, but the new scroll emphasizing the foolishness of waiting for opportunity was much needed. Also, the last scroll about prayer was needed, even though it is essentially a repeat of the tenth scroll in the first book. I am very glad that this author puts so much emphasis on prayer.
Aside from repetition, the only thing I didn't like about this book is that the scrolls are treated so majestically, being just a hair under Biblical scripture itself - almost as if to suggest that the ingredients necessary for any kind of success are both the Word of God AND ten extra scrolls. I'm not so sure Paul would agree. The scrolls are helpful for success, but not necessary.
But yeah, I have to agree. Sitting around and waiting for opportunity to come to you is really the worst thing you can do.
Must-Read.......2006-07-22
I have read everyone of Og Mandinos Books and all I can say is that he writes with brilliance, clarity, enthusiasm, and spirit. You can never go wrong with any of his books. He points out the path to success and motivates the spirit within to achieve all that we as human beings are capable. He helped me to tap into my innate genuis and create a life of prosperity and creativity. If you havent raed his books, start now and your journey of the spirit will begin. He was a born writer and even after his passing continues to have a great influence on many people old and young. He truly lived a purposeful and divine life. Go buy all his books and enjoy the growth and enlightenment. After that Buy my Book " Your daily Walk with the Great Minds of the Past and Present". Enjoy and rememeber you are capable of great things in your life.

For almost 20 years Jerry and Esther Hicks have been presenting workshops, producing tapes and writing books to help people create the life they desire. And desire is no small word in this agenda. According to the teachings of "Abraham"--a collective name for the spiritual entities that are channeled through Esther--desire is a good and natural force within us. In fact, we are all here to fulfill our desires, according to Abraham. Yet the reason so much of us feel frustrated, is that we have difficulty knowing how to ask and receive whatever we want to be, do or have.
Although Jerry and Esther are listed as the authors, Ask and It Is Given is actually a collection of channeled messages from Abraham. Fans of Abraham and the Hicks may not find new information, but will probably be delighted to have an inspiring, updated book that speaks to the familiar conversation of attracting the life we want. Newcomers may also be intrigued by this excellent, in-depth discussion on how to change one's life by matching the vibrational energy of one's desires--taking the power of positive thinking to a whole new level.
Because this material is channeled, it often reads like The Power of Now or A Course in Miracles--not a fast food book to be devoured in one sitting. Rather, this is a book to be read in passages, with a soothing gestation period in between. It includes much advice on working with energy and emotions as well as specific chapters on increasing prosperity, reclaiming health, working with meditation, and clearing clutter for clarity. For those who are onboard with the "Laws of Attraction" and the "Art of Receiving" that Abraham speaks of, this could be one of those deliciously mysterious books that you can open to any page and it seems to offer the exact advice or insight you need right now.--Gail Hudson

Best Book in the World!.......2007-09-24
I LOVE this book! I've read it three times and have given it as gift to many of my friends.
It's an amazing book. I think everyone can benefit from it, even skeptics. It makes you feel wonderful! It's uplifting. It's hopeful. It makes so much sense.
The exercises in part two are incredible. I've used almost all of them. My favorite is the 'Book of Positive Aspects'. Everytime I do this one, all of my energy shifts.
Buy this book! Read it more than once!
Simply Amazing.......2007-09-22

Wonderful Information that can change your life!.......2007-09-17
This book and the channeled information may be a stretch for your mind and beliefs, but if you apply the principles they will change your life. The information has you take responsibility for your thoughts, actions, and beliefs. Esther and Jerry Hicks were teaching the law of attraction long before the secret book or movie. Their work is clear and easy to implement and follow. A good self help guide for anyone wanting wake up and take responsibility for their life and create what they want. Annie Lawrence author of Love's Secret Live Your Life In Love.
Book Description
Human Body is a concise guide to the structure, functions, and disorders of the body. Using full-color, highly detailed illustrations and clear, accessible language, this book is a fascinating introduction to how the body works and what may go wrong. The first part, Anatomy of the Human Body, begins with a medical atlas that shows how the parts of the body fit together. Each individual body system -- such as the skeletal and digestive systems -- is then fully illustrated and explained in detail. A compelling section on the human life cycle examines the changes in the body from conception to old age. In the second part of the book, Diseases and Disorders, some of the most common disorders are described and illustrated, system by system, with explanations of exactly what goes wrong and why. Medical conditions covered include infections, injuries, and cancer. Finally, there is a concise glossary of medical terms.

Neat!.......2007-05-05
I bought this for a friend who loves things like this, but before I sent it off to him I took a look at it myself. I thought this was the perfect book for anybody that really wants details about what goes on inside ourselves. It has great full color diagrams and tons of information. A great pick!
Wonderful small size atlas.......2007-05-01
Great book. For those who are just interested in anatomy will be perfect and should be enough, but medical students would rather use it as a wonderfully colored and easy to read supplement. It's small size, you can keep it in your purse and read anywhere. The best value of that book are colored photos and illustrations with detailed explanations that everybody will undurstand. I personally loved it.
A must have.......2007-02-01
I am currently pursuing a degree in Medical Transcription and an instructor recommended this book.
This book is great. It is small and compact. You can carry it with you anywhere and it fits easily into a backpack. There is so much information in this little. It is written in a way that is clear and concise and easy to understand.
This book has come in very handy. Not only in my Transcription work, but also in some of my other classes. I definitely plan on taking this little book with me when I start my internship and job in Medical Transcription. This is a great resource to have. I highly recommend this book to others.
Wonderful tool!.......2007-01-10
This book is very informative. I am in the medical field and this book has inhanced my life and profession.
Open it anywhere.......2006-11-10
You can open this book anywhere and find something fascinating and quite possibly significant for you.

First, his hair started falling out. Then skin started peeling from his toes. Some stuffing came out of his belly button, and a piece of something gray and wet-his brain?-fell out of his nose. Is this normal? Or is this boy coming unglued? With a perfect combination of humor and grossness, this look at one boy's farfetched fears will have readers laughing their heads off!

An easy favorite.......2007-08-17
My son absoutely loves this book. It's very rhythmical and silly. He usually wants me to read it twice!
Disappointed.......2007-07-25
I bought this book for my son's birthday, because we had previously read "Even More Parts" by the same author. This book is nowhere near as clever and was a huge disappointment. It is also much shorter and that made it seem even more disappointing.
Great Book.......2007-06-21
This is a great book. Adorable concept with funny words and great pictures. I ordered "More Parts" as soon as I read Part. Love them both.
Absolutely hilarious and fun!.......2007-05-30
My 2-year-old daughter loves this book so much that she keeps bringing it to me and simply says "Parts". This is a pretty gross book in a sense of the stuff this poor kid imagines is happening to him [he thinks he is coming apart through various bodily emissions/functions], like losing a tooth, lint in the bellybutton, you get the idea. Reading the other reviews, the consensus seems to be that kids love this book, and I guess Tedd Arnold deserves kudos for being able to tap into what appeals to kids and turning out a winning book. The illustrations are simple, yet cute despite the gross factor. The text doesn't exactly follow rhyming conventions but it works, and has a sing-songy flow to it. The fact that my little one loves it makes it a winner in my book too!
Silly book.......2007-05-15
Its silly and has great pictures. My 3 year old daughter loves the book. She doesn't understand everything in the book, but she does enjoy the pictures. I reccomend it because its totally different from the norm.

DENSE AND OBTUSE BUT WORTH THE EFFORT.......2006-12-15
I have a Ph.D. in Comparative Religion as well as a Th.D., so I'm no neophyte when it comes to arcane and occult themes. Carl Jung, however, is the penultimate obscurantist--at least in English translation--exceeded only by Martin Heidegger. So be prepared for a ride through verbal molasses. That said, this book is well worth the effort because understanding Jung is well worth the effort. His insights go far beyond psychology into that which is today called "spirituality" as opposed to religion.
Grasping the theories and insights of Jung is one of the most empowering things a person can do for themselves because he provides you with insights that will enable you to guide your own self-transformation.

Know your denizens.......2006-06-06
Jung's books are not easy reads, but they are almost invariably eye-openers. I recommend first reading his student's works (von Franz, Barbara Hanna, Joland Jacobi), his "Man and His Symbols," & (especially with respect to this book) Joseph Campbell & Jean Shinoda Bolen. It helps a lot to understand mythology when exploring the collective unconscious. Jung goes to great lengths to show how the denizens of the collective unconscious (archetypes--universal images~Plato's view) map onto very different cultures throughout time & space--appearing in art, dreams, visions, etc. Bolen uses Greek goddesses & gods to depict these. Jung disliked neologisms (creating new words) instead he transplanted them from other disciplines to map into his psychological theories & constructs--thus, "archetypes" & "complexes"--paralleling General Systems Theory (cf. biologist von Bertalanfy's works). "Complex" comes from mathematics' complex numbers. Jung knew & conversed with physicist Pauli, Kabbalah professor Scholem, & many other famous, high-caliber scholars. It is important to realize, when reading this book, the important differences between archetypes of the collective unconscious & complexes of the personal unconscious--though they have the same names! Thus, the mother archetype is the pure image of motherhood--with both positive & negative aspects. But, each person has an actual, individual mother (or lack thereof--absent mother). The interaction or combination of these two forms one's mother complex. As in math, it has a rational part (actual mother) & an imaginary part (archetype). In math, the imaginary part is multiplied by i, the square root of minus 1--which cannot exist, yet mathematicians use it creatively! So does Jung. Even modern works by "post-Jungians" often confuse or confound these two. The Anima/animus is particularly prone to this confusion. Unfortunately, Jung added to this confusion IMHO by calling the anima soul & the animus spirit. The anima/animus use gender & projection to enable people attune to the Self, the overarching archetype (others are essentially subsets). It is the image of wholeness &, thus, the object of psychological individuation--not integration. Jung says one cannot integrate the entire unconscious--that is beyond human capability. This is more subtle than it seems--esp. regarding western mystics' unio mystica (union with God) & eastern enlightenment. Jung attempts to assist people evolve, ~the U.S. Army: "be all you can be," rather than a thin veneer of civilization--p. 269 "Outwardly people are more or less civilized, but inwardly they are still primitives." Further, p. 322 "The view that we can simply turn our back on evil & in this way eschew it belongs to the long list of antiquated naiveté's. This is sheer ostrich policy & does not affect the reality of evil in the slightest." Therefore, Jung includes the negative aspects of both archetypes & complexes. Finally, as scientific psychologist, Jung notes that p. 269 "We should never forget that in any psychological discussion we are not saying anything about the psyche, but that the psyche is always speaking about itself."
Symbols, Dreams, Mandalas, The Unconscious.......2004-01-19
It's a book of essays on a theme, like most of his other books. Here's an attempt to describe the whole theory in a few paragraphs. Jung suggests the existence of a 3-layered psyche consisting of (1) the conscious (active part of the mind), (2) the personal unconscious (thinking over which we have little or no control), and (3) the collective unconscious (unevolved, animal-instinctive mental activity). The collective unconscious is "collective" in the sense that humans resemble each other the most at the lowest, biological levels. "The body's carbon is simply carbon" (pg. 173). We inherit the collective unconscious from the common pool of human characteristics, like morphological aspects of the body such as arms, legs, etc.
The "archetypes" originate in the collective unconscious and are the psychological equivalents of Platonic Forms. (I realized about halfway through the book that archetype-figures also appear in the personal unconscious, where they're called "complexes"). The most important archetypes appear to be the Shadow (the inferior aspects of the self which we hide from others), the Anima/Animus (our object(s) of desire), and the Wise Old Man (e.g., teacher, medicine man). He also discusses a Mother archetype and a Child archetype and indicates the existence of numerous others. Identifying strongly with an archetype leads to psychosis.
The heart of the book is in the first essay, but the rest is useful in fleshing out descriptions and giving examples. The collective Anima archetype, for instance, can be found among movie stars and in the general pop culture. Devils and tricksters often represent the Shadow archetype. Tolkien's Gandalf is a good instance of the Wise Old Man. It's not so easy to identify a particular individual's Anima complex or Shadow complex.
A few things bothered me about the book. For one, Jung indicates that the "Primitive mentality differs from the civilized chiefly in that the conscious mind is far less developed in scope ... The Primitive cannot assert that he thinks; it is rather that something thinks in him" (pg. 153). This is a dubious kind of distinction between civilized and uncivilized states of mind that seems to have gone out of fashion over the decades. Also, I couldn't tell from this book what methodology Jung used to determine the significance of dream symbols. Does every dream about climbing a tree represent the psyche climbing the "World Tree" toward higher states of consciousness? Do snakes always represent the unconscious? Is every old woman in a dream an example of the Mother archetype? Etc.
One of the more interesting and also frustrating essays describes a case study of a woman who paints mandalas over a period of 16-plus years. Why mandalas? Jung says the mandala represents the Self, and painting them is useful for determining the contents of the psyche. He discusses the first dozen or so in detail (reprinted in color), but then glosses over the rest, which came into his hands after the patient had died from cancer!
An Essential Work by Jung........2003-05-28
This work, along with _Modern Man in Search of a Soul_, is one of the best places to start if you are new to reading Jung. It is also the companion piece and predecessor to _Aion_, which is another spectacular and groundbreaking work. If you want to read _Aion_, it would make sense for you to read this one first, since it is part 1 of volume nine, while _Aion_ is part two. Overall, I would say that both parts 1 and 2 of volume nine are absolutely essential reading for any Jungian, and if you're going to buy one, go ahead and buy both.
As for the actual content of _The Archetypes of the Collective Unconscious_, I would describe it as an overview and recapitulation of many of Jung's key concepts. As the title implies, the main concepts are archetypal images (as revealed in to people in dreams) and the collective unconscious. These are trademark Jungian concepts, and Jung devoted a large portion of his writings to explaining what he meant by Archetypes and the collective unconscious. If I could explain it to you right here I would, but Jung spends a the first two hundred pages of this book simply explaining and defining "archetype" and "collective unconscious". These are key concepts in understanding the human mind, and may help unlock the mysteries of conscious existence; it is by no means superfluous to devote such rigorous study to these ideas. _The Archetypes and the Collcetive Unconscious_ is NOT a narrowly focused, specialized, or jargonistic work. It deals with ideas that are central to understanding the human psyche or soul, and applies universally to all of mankind.
There is also a pictorial section of the book in which Jung actually shows examples, in the form of paintings, of archetypal images that were seen by his patients in their dreams and subsequently drawn by the patients themselves. Some of these paintings are very artistic, and there are uncanny similarities among many of them. This pictorial section occurs about 200 pages in. After the pictures, Jung goes into a detailed explanation of each one, which I found to be somewhat tiresome, especially considering many of the paintings were extremely similar. Overall, the final, brief, section of the book in which the paintings are described is quite boring, and I would recommend that the reader simply look at the paintings and forego the final explanations, which are extremely redundant. In other words, read the first two hundred pages, look at the pictures, stop, and then move on to _Aion_. The weakness of this final section is not enough to justify removing a star from my ratings, however, simply because of the utter profundity and potency of the first 200 pages, which represents the majority of the book anyway. Keep in mind that the vast majority of Jung's writings consist of essays not more that 100 pages long each. You will find that most of his complete works contain numerous profound and insightful essays, occasionally laced with the odd, specialized, highly esoteric essays. When you come across one of these rare but unreadable essays the best idea is to just skip it rather than get bogged down. This is not to take anything away from Jung and his great, prophetic works; I am just trying to give you the heads up on how to avoid some of the rough patches.

A Neglected Masterpiece of Western Philosophy.......2007-04-10
Jean Gebser does not get the same kind of exposure as Heidegger or Jung, but his thinking belongs to, and organically evolves out of, the tradition of German thinking that began with Goethe and Kant and continues right down through Schopenhauer, Nietzsche, Rudolf Steiner, Oswald Spengler and others. And what this tradition of thought has common to it is the notion that there is no such thing as an object that is not conditioned by the phenomenological faculties of the subject. Kant, Schopenhauer, Husserl and Heidegger resolve this problem in various ways, but with each of them, it is the subject, not the object, that is of overriding philosophical importance in our experience of the world around us.
What Gebser tried to do in this book was to give a kind of phenomenological grounding to the human being's experience of the world not in terms of Kantian categories, but in terms of various evolutionarily derived structures of conscious which the human bears within itself. That is to say, earlier consciousness structures, such as those of tribal man or literate man of the high Bronze Age civilizations, do not just disappear, but sleep latently within the psyche as valid experiential modes unto themselves. Certain life experiences will activate and call forth these modalities, and once the consciousness structure has been activated, it actually changes the very physics of the experiences which the subject has. In the Magical consciousness structure, for example, space and time are a point-like unity in which there are no dimensions, since the world is intricately interconnected through magical pathways like the songlines of aboriginal Australia. Magic actually, really does work when this consciousness is activated (hence the reality of synchronicities and the like). The rational consciousness structure has its own laws, too, and the structure of its interior is that of a three dimensional world in which time and space are radically distinct from one another, and in which the subject and the object are locked into a fierce opposition. Magic is invalidated within this highly differentiated structure, which is evolutionarily late, since this consciousness is something that always evolves in late phases of culture or in the history of civilization generally speaking, just as the intellect does not function fully in accordance with its own powers until one reaches maturity.
Gebser's philosophy is a wonderful antidote to Jungian typology and formulae, since he creates a kind of philosophical architecture out of the collective unconscious, while leaving the theory of archetypes behind. Gebser, however, is no Jungian, and despite his having taught at the Jung Institute in Switzerland, never was one.
Gebser's philosophy also evolved as a kind of antidote to the pessimism of Spengler's vision in The Decline of the West. What Spengler missed was the advent of the aperspectival epoch that began to emerge during the latter half of the nineteenth century. Whereas Spengler experienced the decline of European culture forms--such as the abolishment of perspective in painting, or the leaving behind of Newtonian physics in Einstein--Gebser realized that what was really going on was the transcendence of the Rational consciousness structure and the emergence of a supra- (not ir- or non-) rational consciousness in which the laws of the Mental structure were in process of being relativized to a specific experiential domain, just as Einstein's physics relativized the applicability of Newtonian laws to a specific domain of validity. Thus, the Decline of the West is really about the Decline of the perspectival (i.e. late rational) consciousness structure, and this is where Gebser's philosophy begins. (Perhaps not coincidentally, it is also where Marshall McLuhan saw a shift into the electric modality of culture; indeed, McLuhan and Gebser have a great deal in common when one looks closely at their ideas.)
In short, if you are interested in the development of Western, and particularly Germanic philosophy, then you cannot afford to ignore Gebser. Academics may do so for some time to come, since the spiritual implications of his Integral structure makes them uneasy. And what also repels academics about Gebser is the fact that he has been taken up by New Agers like Ken Wilber (who, as is so often the case with Wilber, thoroughly misunderstands him) and Richard Tarnas, with whom academics want absolutely nothing to do. And who can blame them? The New Age kitsch of such "thinkers" is a mediocratization of philosophy and all it does is sully the image of such true geniuses as Rudolf Steiner and Jean Gebser in the public's perception.
Try Gebser. You'll like him. But you shouldn't try reading around him with "substitute" works by Georg Feurstein or Ken Wilber. These thinkers are not good representatives of Gebser's thought, since they bring their own private agendas to bear upon him, and end up distorting his ideas. To really experience the dazzling brilliance of this man's mind, you must read his dense prose for yourself. Preferably with a strong cup of coffee in hand.

Brilliant!.......2004-07-06
This is a brilliant piece of work by one of the most advanced thinkers of our time. If you are interested and knowledgeable in the field of consciousness studies and you have not read this book, you absolutely must read it. If you are not knowledgeable in this area but are still interested, I strongly suggest you read, "The Ever-Transcending Spirit" by Toru Sato. It explains some of these ideas in language everyone can understand. It is also a brilliant book! Happy reading!
Addendum to Gruenig review.......2002-03-10
Hans Gruenig has given an excellent overview of Gebser's monumental work. My review offers a sort of color commentary to augment Gruenig's words. The Ever-Present Origin, which has a generic-looking cover, is an extraordinarily rich survey of art, science, culture, and symbolism from an author who achieved more than scholarly excellence. In a letter written to Georg Feuerstein, Gebser acknowledged achieving satori (see the Feuerstein book cited by Gruenig). A transcendent consciousness shines through this book. One of its highlights is Gebser's scholarly survey of the evolution of soul. Gebser's vision was formed in part through his friendship and acquaintence with many of the leading people of his time, including Einstein, Picasso, and Jung. Although he taught for awhile at the C. G. Jung Institute in Zurich, he asserts an independent vision. An essential Gebserian contribution is his subsuming of the scientific worldview. That worldview crystallized with the linear perspective geometry of the Italian Renaissance, a drawing technique that artificially separated subject and object. Gebser convincingly demonstrates the emergence of an integral consciousness where the time and space of "objectivity" no longer offer an adequate description of our world or personal experience. This book is a masterpiece, written in simple, somewhat repetitive language. It is quite readable, though a bit awkward in translation.
Gebser's Magnum Opus.......2001-08-27
This book is not a light read. However it is a fascinating read penned by one of Europe's hidden philosophical treasures: Jean Gebser. The Ever-Present Origin is a translation of _Ursprung und Gegenwart_, a book which was published in German in two parts around 1949 and 1953. The central contribution of this book is Gebser's analysis of the history of culture -- mainly but not exclusively Western culture -- in terms of the predominance of different modes of consciousness. Gebser details five structures of consciousness: the archaic, the magical, the mythical, the mental, and the integral (or aperspectival). His theory seems to be that these structures unfold in a sequential but non-linear fashion (i.e. in quantum increases in the self-transparency of consciousness), and have different kinds of characteristic ways of experiencing self, other, and world. With each leap, the previous structures of consciousness are superceded and yet retained in a subordinate fashion. Meanwhile, the other structures lie largely latent and untapped. VERY briefly, the archaic is instinctual and primitive. The magical is tribal and involves participation mystique. The mythical is imaginative and often involves seeing through complementary polarities (darkness and light, good and evil). The mental is analytical, dualistic, and skeptical of the other structures of consciousness. And the integral structure allows for a re-membering of all of the structures of consciousness without the problematic reification of their respective "worlds". The integral or aperspectival structure additionally involves going beyond the previous four structures in something akin to Buddhist or Christian (a la Meister Eckhart) enlightenment as understood in terms of the perennial philosophy. If you're looking for an easier read, Georg Feuerstein's introduction to Gebser (titled _Structures of Consciousness: The Genius of Jean Gebser_) is a good place to start. If you're looking for a place to continue similar explorations, much of Ken Wilbur's work is largely based on synthesizing Gebser's theory of structures of consciousness with other developmental models. [I give Wilbur and A for effort, but I am very skeptical about a number of his syntheses.]
Book Description
Originally a derogatory label derived from the Hawaiian word for half, Hapa is now being embraced as a term of pride by many people of Asian or Pacific Rim mixed-race heritage. Award-winning film producer and artist Kip Fulbeck has created a forum in word and image for Hapas to answer the question they're nearly always asked: "What are you?" Fulbeck's frank, head-on portraits are paired with the sitters' own statements of identity. A work of intimacy, beauty, and powerful self-expression, Part Asian, 100% Hapa is the book Fulbeck says he wishes he had growing up. An introduction to the rest of the world and an affirmation for Hapas themselves who now number in the millions it offers a new perspective on a rapidly growing population.

Simple yet profound........2007-07-14
My wife and I discovered this book in a cafe during our visit to the Big Island, Hawaii and immediately fell in love with the book. A wonderful portrait of mixed races with simple photographic portraits.
No longer half, but whole.......2007-06-09
Kip Fulbeck has created a community for those of us who identify ourselves as wholly members of our communities, but who are often not perceived by others as fully included. We are the exotic, the other, the mixed -- the products of the melting pot. We are as different from one another, as alike, as complex, as unique, as are other people of other backgrounds -- which is to say, as much as is true for anyone (of any ethnic heritage), we hapa can not be defined by our ethnic heritage, nor can we dismiss the great influence our varied heritage has exerted on our personal identities. It is lovely to have these truths acknowledged. Thank you, Kip Fulbeck. This work of art has been carefully crafted, and is deeply meaningful. While some of the references -- visual and otherwise -- may not be fully understood by those who have not experienced life as a hapa, or as a hapa of a particular generation, nevertheless I think that everyone will discover something new and beautiful within these pages. This is a rare gem. Not to be missed!
Americans All.......2007-05-20
A perfect example of one picture being worth a thousand words but the few words of copy are also very good.
I am Hapa and so are my Kids... we are Hapa HAWAIIAN.......2007-05-15
I am 100% Hapa, i was born and raised in Hawaii and i am very familar with the term and pleased to see it making its way into mainstream culture. I bought this book as a fathers day gift for my husband who is always asking why our first son looks nothings like him (he is Irish) and i am Hawaiian-Irish-Portugese.
I only wish that the title of the book was more inclusive of Hawaiian and Pacific islanders who are also Hapa and originated the term.
Wonderful Author, Great Idea.......2007-05-12
I heard Kip speak in 2003 at Grand Valley State University in Michigan. At the time he was selling his book, Paper Bullets, which I highly recommend. I value my autographed copy. Today he was on CNN promoting this book and it's truly worth the money. My only wish was that CNN had discussed his credentials or even allowed him to read a bit from one of his books. Kip is intelligent, engaging, real, and a person who illuminates a room. I'm marrying an Asian American man and our children will be Hapa. I'm forever thankful to Kip for his books.
This is a must read, as is Paper Bullets.
