Studying the individual faces and personal essays of these 75 peacemakers we discover a simple truth: making peace is an act of courage. Put them all together in a volume as elegant as this one and a higher truth emerges: making peace is the world's next spiritual calling. Photographer Michael Collopy did an excellent job of bringing forth each of his subject's integrity, grit, and humanity. In the clear and gentle eyes of Vietnam veteran and author Ron Kovic we see the healing that it took to transcend the wounds of the battlefield and write Born on the Fourth of July. Maried Corrigan Maguire lost two nephews and a niece in an IRA and British car chase. Soon after, Maguire's grief-stricken sister committed suicide. As a result she founded Peace People, an organization to end sectarian violence. In her strong jaw and sad eyes we see every woman who has ever turned grief into activism.

Many of the faces are familiar ones--Carlos Santana, Cezar Chavez, Thich Nhat Hanh, Dr. Maya Angelou, Coretta Scott King. Yet there are numerous quiet heroes as well. The personal essays are mostly brief (one page) but offer compelling reasons why we all should give peace a chance. --Gail Hudson

Book Description

Seventy-five of the world's peacemakers - spiritual leaders, activists, scientists, writers - appear in this tribute to the power of nonviolence. Photographer Michael Collopy combines his original tritone portraits of these luminaries, from Nelson Mandela to the Dalai Lama, with moving statements on peace in their own words - most written especially for this book. Including 16 Nobel Peace Prize laureates as well as less known heroes such as Bosnian diarist Nadja Halilbegovich, Architects of Peace offers a message of hope for humanity.

5 out of 5 stars A fine repersentation of images and tributes to peace.......2003-01-05

In Architects Of Peace, photographer Michael Collopy set out to document the visions of over seventy of the world's great peacemakers - spiritual leaders, politicians, and artists alike. Architects Of Peace blends art and insights alike in a volume which blends his tritone photos of these people with essays reflecting their beliefs. From Jean-Michael Cousteau and Elie Wiesel to Joan Baez and others, this makes for a fine repersentation of images and tributes to peace.

1 out of 5 stars Is this a joke?.......2002-11-26

While it's great that so many people have been able to focus on those several truly extraordinary people mentioned in this book, the fact that Margaret Thatcher is listed as an 'architect of peace' is like saying Stalin just wanted civil rights for everybody. This is the same woman who turned her back on the vast majority of Britons and was the embodiment of Reaganite self-centeredness. How many people are unaware of her response when asked about rising heating costs for the elderly in Britain: "They have hats, don't they?". Are we to believe she belongs in the same book as Mother Theresa??! What insanity! Her inclusion not only casts credibility on the authors, but undermines the genuine acts of peace that are enacted daily by the extraordinary presences of teachers like Thich Nhat Hanh and others.

There is much good in this book, but to equate some of the most advanced spiritual practitioners with the likes of Thatcher and several movie stars is grossly arrogant, and smacks of only wanting to hob-nob with the rich and famous.

Follow the advice of the lovely comments below and read their recommendations. Just don't buy this one.

5 out of 5 stars Two men important in my personal journey are profiled.......2002-08-15

Cesar Chavez (pictured on the lower right hand cover of this book) and Arun Gandhi are two men who have been very important in my spiritual journey through life, and both are featured in this book.

Arun Gandhi is the Grandson of Mahatma Gandhi, and Arun now heads the "M. K. Gandhi Institute for Nonviolence" in Memphis, TN. I had the honor of meeting Arun Gandhi at a retreat several years back, and he has remained an important part of my life ever since; he has helped me better understand the world and better understand my life and the people involved in my life, and he has taught me that being "peaceful" and non-violent truly entails more than just refusing to fight and feeling good about onself.

As a little boy, from age four to age six, I lived with my family at "Colegio Cesar Chavez" in Mt. Angel, Oregon. Colegio Cesar Chavez was a "college without walls" program and in its day (1973-1983) it was the only "chicano" four-year college in the nation. It had correspondence students from as far away as New York and Canada. Cesar Chavez paid two visits to the campus, and I became quite emotional when my mother recently informed me that I had had the honor to actually meet him during one of the visits (of course, I was too young at the time to have known who I was meeting). So, Arun Gandhi and Cesar Chavez have been important in my life, they are both featured in this book, and they are both Gandhian. I can't help but feel that this book was made for me personally (I mean that "rhetorically," of course), since it creates something of a "continuum" in my personal journey, added to the fact that I was born on the Mahatma's birthday.

Another man who has been important in my journey is also profiled in this book: Thich Nhat Hahn. He is a Zen monk who was nominated by Martin Luther King Jr. for a Nobel Prize. His books, such as PEACE IS EVERY STEP, are beautifully written and have had a huge impact on my life. His works have helped me see deeper into the world around me.

As for the layout of the book itself, it is beautiful. The photographs are crisp and clear and honest, and the text is inspiring. I confess that there is one specific person profiled in this book that I feel may not truly have deserved to be in this company as I feel his persona has been constructed with personal glorification as its main goal, but who am I to ultimately make such a judgment? We find inspiration where we need to, and I'm sure this specific individual has inspired many people.

Further books that may interest the reader of this book are:

THE FORGOTTEN WOMAN by Arun Gandhi; this is about Kasturba Gandhi, wife of the Mahatma.

COLEGIO CESAR CHAVEZ by Carlos Maldonado; this book is about the college named for Cesar Chavez, the one I lived at as a child.

NOSOTROS: THE HISPANIC PEOPLE OF OREGON by the Oregon Counsel for the Humanities; this book profiles the Hispanic population of Oregon and highlights Cesar Chavez's impact on them (a section devoted to "Colegio Cesar Chavez" is included, with a picture of Cesar Chavez visiting the campus).

PEACE IS EVERY STEP by Thich Nhat Hanh; in my opinion, this is his definitive work on spiritual insight and inner peace.

5 out of 5 stars Timely.......2001-12-05

This book is brilliant. I have bought several copies, all before September 11 and now, more than ever, it's message is so important. This is a pivotal time in history and this book could be a bible for the times. If they can do it, we can. Michael Collopy is an Architect of Peace of the highest order himself. He is a beautiful photographer and an inspired visionary. I highly recommend this book for absolutely EVERYONE on your holiday shopping list.

5 out of 5 stars A magnificent tribute and inspiring anthology.......2001-09-29

I bought this as a gift last year, and keep buying more. This beautiful anthology in photos (b&w) of the world's great peacemakers along with thier own moving thoughts and reflections is a masterpiece of photography and words, but much more. To see these great people and hear their visions is insightful, thought provoking, stunning, moving, and inspiring.
With the recent events of September 2001, it is even more poignant.
A must see to appreciate. It is the kind of book you will cherish and share. A great gift for educators, healers, leaders, young people, baby boomers, and everyone in between who thinks, and all who desire a better humanity. But one word of caution, if you buy it as a gift, get two- you are likely to keep one for yourself.
A truly memorable tribute to the ability of single individuals from diverse backgrounds to make a difference...to unite with strength of purpose and vision in the goal of a more peaceful world.

5 out of 5 stars beautiful book.......2007-06-29

this really is a treasure of a book. looking through the photos, i feel inspired by the beauty of the earth. almost a spiritual experience.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational Images of the Natural World.......2007-03-17

This is a gorgeous collection of images from some of the leading landscape photographers in the world today, including some well-known photos by the late Galen Rowell. While no book can ever be a substitute for the actual experience of viewing the original prints, as I learned from a few visits to Galen and Barbara Rowell's gallery in Bishop, California, the reproduction quality here is quite high. And some of these images are simply stunning! One of my personal favorites is an image of desert geysers by Michael Fatali where the sun and moon are both present. What an unusual photograph! It was so refreshing to realize that I had never seen most of these photographs before, despite my frequent perusal of photo books. In keeping with the tradition of landscape photography, most of the work here was done in 4x5 or 8x10 format, though there is also a smattering of medium, panoramic, and 35mm formats. This is definitely not a how-to instructional book, but does serve as an excellent source of inspiration for any budding nature photographer. Sure, there are a few omissions of great landscape photographers today, most notably the large format work of Carr Clifton. Nonetheless, this is an outstanding overview of the best landscape work being done today, a small percentage of which is still in black-and-white. As anyone familiar with this art form already knows, the most important quality of a good nature photographer is an obsessional love of the land itself, a love at least strong enough to compel a person to drag themselves out of bed at the most unspeakable hours to be in a position to catch the first rays of dawn. It is interesting and instructive to read the various stories accompanying the photographs that describe the incredible lengths to which these photographers will go in an effort to capture their finest images. Their sheer persistence, patience, and resolve in trekking untold miles to a predetermined location, often in cold and inclement weather with several pounds of large format gear strapped to their backs, can make a rank amateur like myself feel shamefully lazy. If you think you may have an interest in landscape photography and the images in this book do not inspire you to hit the hiking trail, perhaps you should consider selling your camera on e-bay.

5 out of 5 stars Not only great photographers but great people.......2007-01-08

I normally do not write reviews but here goes...I find this book very inspiring! Not only to see the works of these wonderful artists, but to gain insight into their craft. This is a great way to see and own these works considering the actual value of their prints. The best aspect of this experience is to see how an artist visualizes their subject which puts you right there with them, which is the best experience for any photographer in training.

I have had the great privilege not only to own some of these works, but to have actually photographed along side Michael Fatali. I have to say that his work goes well beyond what you can see in his images since much of what is recorded in the print was more emotion and spiritual than can be visible in an image. I am a firm believer that art does not stand alone but is always better understood and appreciated within the context of the creator. Therefore getting close to the artist, which a book like this provides, is a great way to help us understand the work in the context of those who created it. If you can get a hold of this book and you love photography or art in general it is a must have!

5 out of 5 stars A Study in photo excellence.......2006-06-07

This is an incredible collection of photos from today's master photographers. If that isn't enought , Each artist also gives personal insite to their approach . My personal favorites are the photos by Burkett , Cramer and Fatali.

As one reviewer mentioned earlier , It also has the benefit of comparing the different approaches of the same subject taken by Dykinga and Fatali , One that is a great learning tool within itself since the Fatali photo is also a accident that turned out to be my favorite photo. It shows what is possible using double exposures.

If you are interested in photography and learning by other artist efforts , you will spend a lot of time reading this book. It is money well spent.

5 out of 5 stars Simply the best!.......2005-05-10

Simply the best book in this area available. I will not go on to much as others have out very valid information across, but this has amazing photo's to inspire all that view them and so very interesting information also. One of your first purchases for all avid landscape photographers should be this book. Very well laid out with top notch printing. Highly recommended

Book Description

Born and bred in a working class environment in Asbury Park, New Jersey, Bruce Springsteen has, over the past 30 years, established himself as one of the most influential songwriters and performers in American popular music. Winner of three Grammy Awards for The Rising, he continues to entertain and inspire millions of fans around the world. Also born and bred in a working-class New Jersey home was photographer Frank Stefanko, who crossed paths with Springsteen thanks to an introduction by a mutual friend, musician Patti Smith. This meeting spurred a photographic collaboration that lasted five years and produced cover photos for two of Springsteen's most significant albums, Darkness on the Edge of Town and The River. Stefanko's archive of several thousand Springsteen photos has never been published-that is, until now. Days of Hope and Dreams presents an unforgettable selection of Stefanko's most significant and most personal images from his time working with Springsteen, and Stefanko's recollections offer behind-the-scenes stories of his work and friendship with this legendary musical talent. Featuring a fascinating introduction written by The Boss himself, this is a must-have guide for Springsteen fans and music lovers everywhere!

5 out of 5 stars Thank you, Frank, for sharing your gift.......2004-01-21

This is a wonderful book. The photographs are uniformly compelling and insightful, as is the text. The reader is treated to a rare, unvarnished glimpse of an American hero about to "burst like a supernova." The images are timeless, and harken back to a simpler, perhaps more poignant time -- before MTV and the Internet changed the way we obtained and enjoyed our music. The author's spare text is thoughtful without being intrusive; a perfect compliment to the compelling images that accompany it. The text conveys a straightforward warmth and appreciation for the author's subject that are both refreshing and inspiring. This is a book to pore over, savor, and return to. Thank you, Frank, for sharing your gift -- and thank you, Bruce, for recognizing his genius, and for allowing us a little glimpse of yours.

5 out of 5 stars TRIBUTE TO LATE WIFE SHEILA WAS TOUCHING.......2003-11-28

This book engrosses you from the moment you start reading you cant stop.I am giving this book to my clients and friends as it makes the perfect gift for Bruce Springsteen fans.I was also very moved by Authors tribute to his late wife Sheila and feel there may be another story there Frank ?

5 out of 5 stars amazing -- some of the best Bruce photos ever.......2003-11-04

1978 was a key moment in Bruce Springsteen's career, and Frank Stefanko was there to capture it in black and white. In these photos, you see a rock star breaking out, but still struggling and working his [tail] off. Stefanko had not even heard the Darkness album when he took the photos that would lead to its cover (and the cover of The River), but he captured the mood and the tone perfectly, of both the music and the musician. Even if you're not into photo books, if you have an interest in Springsteen, do yourself a favor and get this book.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful.........2005-02-06

I love this book, it is sitting on my coffee table right now. I've read this book atleast 5 times in the past couple months, most photography books I read once then never touch them again for quite a long time.. This book is amazing though.

I highly suggest purchasing it if you enjoy wildlife photography and reading about the photos. All the storys are short but very entertaining and the photos are of top notch quality.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended for nature and photography collections.......2004-11-12

Wildlife is a truly gorgeous showcase of wildlife photography from expert professionals. Still images are presented in full-color, along with a brief sidebar written by the photographer detailing the story behind the photograph in question. A wide variety of species are presented in all their glory, from a magnificent tiger in mid-leap to a penguin chick huddled for protection underneath its dutiful parent. Highly recommended for nature and photography collections alike, and simply beautiful to page through.

4 out of 5 stars Not a Complete Meal.......2003-08-18

This is a collection of the work of 40 of the world's most famous wildlife photographers. Names like Iwago, Lanting, Mangelsen, Morris and Wolfe will be quite familiar to people interested in this genre.

Each artist gets four pages for some biographical data and several pictures. Every one of the photos is world class.

While the biographies are generally too short to provide much insight into the individual artists, one can discern a couple of trends in their lives. A good many started life in some other career and after a while decided to make the risky jump to professional wildlife photography. Others were interested in nature all of their life and the photography grew out of this love. No one started life as a commercial or fashion photographer and then made the switch to wildlife. Occasionally a photographer will offer a surprising statement about the commercial nature of wildlife photography, like the photographer who notes that the books he has published don't make financial sense, but do help to drum up other business.

As I've perused a number of wildlife photography books over the years, I've noticed that a good book is like a good piece of music. As you proceed through it, you notice both the repetition and the variation of elements so that by the end of the book you have not just looked at pictures, but also come to understand something about the photographer and the way he relates to the animals he photographs. This book is more like a CD my son owns, called "50 Great Classical Hits" (or something like that). The CD plays just the most dramatic points from a number of symphonies. While that can be interesting, it certainly doesn't provide the same experience as listening to a single full symphony.

This book has the same effect. Many of the pictures are obviously well composed and striking but when one turns the page the picture one just looked at disappears from the mind as the reader tries to come to grips with a completely different subject and style. Ultimately I found this beautiful book unsatisfying.

But, it does serve the very useful purpose of introducing you to wildlife photographers you may not have yet encountered. I, for one, will be keeping my eyes open for the work of Chris Packham and Konrad Wothe. Reading it may also lead you to look for the work of unfamiliar artists.

4 out of 5 stars Grand images.......2003-04-09

The images are brilliantly printed with stunning details. I even liked the format whereby the equipment used were listed together with the image.

Excellent book for inspiration.

5 out of 5 stars a brillant book!.......2003-01-08

This is my favorite book of the year. The photos are really beautiful! I gave this as a Christmas gift to several of my friends who are into photography. In addition to the fabulous photos there is useful practical information for up and coming photographers.

5 out of 5 stars It captured the peoples dreams and hopes for equality........1998-10-28

I was impressed at the magnificent way that this book brought to light the struggle and dreams of the Mule Train participants. Their beleifs that what was transpiring would make a difference, not just for them, but for all of America. The committment of Mr. Willie Bolden, tasked with the responsibility to see that all went well. His determination and others that dispite several roadblocks insured all travelers were taken care of. The reporting by Jean Pond-Smith showed the realness of this movement without being bias or prejudicial. Her capture of the spirit of the travelers were enligntening and heartwrenching. This book brought home to me many memories that I had long ago moved to the back of mind. That I, along with with mother and three of my sisters were a part of this moment in history.

Spacecam: Photographing The Final Frontier From Apollo To Hubble provides a visual exploration of Earth and deep space as seen from a variety of mediums: from the eyes of astronauts, satellites, space telescopes, and NASA probes. Lovely color photos on every page pack in what astronauts and probes see in space; from images of Earth to other worlds. There have been many other astronomy photo books published over the years, but most have a more singular focus: Hubble, Earth-from-Moon, etc. Spacecam is the most multi-faceted collection of them all.

"Whether you're one-breasted, two-breasted, or no-breasted, it's a two-fisted fight," says former congresswoman Bella Abzug in this inspirational and motivational book-and-journal set. It includes touching passages from both male and female breast cancer survivors, as well as women who've had prophylactic mastectomies, from social workers, teachers, activists, and artists to celebrities including Julia Child, Linda Ellerbee, actress Jill Eikenberry, and Betty Ford.

The essay by Ms. Senior America Miriam Adamson is especially uplifting. Her husband left her after 33 years of marriage, and she was diagnosed with breast cancer soon afterwards, which she attributes to her heavy emotions. Chemotherapy left her bald, but she drew strength from the students at the high school where she taught: "She laughs when she recalls that though they started out with the very solicitous words, 'How are you, Ms. Adamson?' the next question would invariably be, 'Can I get a pass to study hall?' so they could see their boyfriends or girlfriends. They were too busy with their own lives to pander to her illness." She's been cancer-free for 15 years now.

These survivors discuss their sometimes controversial decisions--from hedging their bets and refusing chemotherapy to having a radical mastectomy when the doctor said a lumpectomy was all that was needed, to continuing hormone-replacement therapy even though it's been shown to stimulate the growth of breast cancer. These profiles prove that listening to one's inner voice--even if it goes against conventional wisdom--is essential. All proceeds from this collection will be donated to the National Alliance of Breast Cancer Organizations.

It's hard to visualize how women go on with their lives after the diagnosis of breast cancer. The pictures in this book show committed, involved women whose breasts may have been taken but not their spirits and strength. The stories are often moving, often funny and the journal gives you a place for your own story and notes to record this major life challenge. A great set to get you or friends or family through the worst and get ready for the best part of your life, cancer-free.
