Customer Reviews:
Great anatomy book!!!.......2006-07-19
I used this book while studying to be a physical therapist assistant. I wish I had found it sooner!!! It's fabulous. I provides a detailed description of how to find muscles, bones, etc. This is better than any other book I have used for this purpose.
Never thought it could get better, but it DID ..........2006-02-23
I received the 2nd ed. of this book in massage school.
I purchased the 3rd ed. to study for my National test.
WOW! I truly did not think this book could have gotten any better, but it DID! It shows all different views of muscles, muscle groups, bones, boney landmarks, how to find boney landmarks to find muscles, latin/greek roots of the words, study hints, remembering devices, WONDERFUL illustrations!
I also purchased the Student Workbook - which is an ENTIRELY new text with this edition - and it has a lot of different ways to test yourself to prepare for tests.
If you need to know ANYTHING relating to the muscles/bones of the body, YOU NEED THIS BOOK! Don't let the cost fool you ... it is NOT overpriced. I used to think it was (when I found out how much it was by itself - my 2nd ed. was included with my tuition at school), until I bought this new edition.
They added an obscene amount of new pages, and updated their illustrations to make them even EASIER to understand.
If you have any doubts about this book, log on to the publishers website discoverybooks . com - there are excerpts, downloadable pages, etc.
Hope this helps.
Wow!.......2006-02-20
Wow!, to this amazing book. I am so pleased with this purchase, I can't tell ya... I'll try. I am in massage school right now, blessed with great anatomy and physiology instructors, and great books (Musculino, Netters, Werner). Memorizing is not my strong suit so I look for as much as I can to help my brain log this info. This book gave me the missing link. I'm really beginning to tie this all together. It's angle on understanding anatomy is fun and more day to day, the illustrations are b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l. Thank you, thank you for creating this fine piece of work. I am psyched to have this on my shelf for the years to come.
Pictures are really clear, simple to learn from.......2006-02-17
The pictures in this book make learning anatomy a lot more fun. The section on bony landmarks is excellent. The section on the planes of the body and ranges of motion are also uncomplicated to learn from. For example, the pictures on the ranges of motion of the neck made it really clear how to figure out the difference between rotation and lateral flexion.
This book was really good to help me study for the national certification examination for massage and bodywork. Other books that I also recommend for studying for the national certification examination include,
The Ultimate Study Guide for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork: Key Review Questions and Answers (Topics: Human Anatomy, Physiology, and Kinesiology) Volume 1
The Ultimate Study Guide for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork: Key Review Questions and Answers (Topics: Clinical Pathology and Recognition of Various Conditions) Volume 2
The Ultimate Study Guide for the National Certification Examination for Therapeutic Massage and Bodywork: Key Review Questions and Answers (Topics: Massage Therapy and Bodywork: Theory, Assessment, and Application. Professional Standards, Ethics, and Business Practices) Volume 3
These study guides had important, relevant questions and answers that showed me what was important for the national certification exam.
Trail Guide to the Body is a keeper.
An expert guide to "listening" with your hands!.......2005-12-04
This book nails describing what it should feel like to touch specific muscles and structures. The illustration is amazing. My clients love the trivia I learned from this book, such as the Soleus muscle is also known as the "second heart" because it provides so much venous return pumping! Buy this book and learn it backwards and forwards and you will know how to precisely and exactly palpate any major muscle on any body. You will most likely also know more than doctors do about muscles, which is kind of fun when you are working on them! Once you know where you are, then you can start the real work. This guide leads you there.

good physical therapy resource.......2007-07-03
This book is an excellent source of information especially for special tests for a variety of dysfunctions
Best you can buy.......2007-06-27
If you need to study for your PTA or PT exam this is a must have. Great book.
Everything you needed to know..........2007-03-29
An absolute need for Physical Therapists in the orthopedic and/or sports medicine field. If you have a version over 10 years old, I highly recommend you upgrade to this one. There is new stuff and great pictures!
Good reference, not quite what I expected.......2006-06-21
It was probably my fault for not giving the book 5 stars. I was expecting a book that would be a little easier to use in practice. This book does a really good job of giving various physical exam tests. It has lots of good pictures and other graphics. My two complaints, and what bumped this book down to a 4 instead of a 5, is that it is a little too "all over the place" with the exam. I would have preferred a book that helped me to focus. In that respect, Cooper's Pocket Guide and Hoppenfeld's physical exam book are much better. Also, I would have liked to have some treatment sections in this book. Still, all in all it's a good buy.
Best Orthopedic Exam Reference Textbook.......2006-05-09
This is the best orthopedic exam textbook I've found. It has good illustrations, is very inclusive in its content, and is well organized. You could think of it as a sort of illustrated orthopedic examination encyclopedia. It's a bit burdensome to read (and carry) because of its inclusiveness nature. So don't think you'll be carrying this one in your pocket for each exam. However, you'll be glad you have it on your shelf for reference. Great work Magee! This one is well worth purchasing. Especially if you are thinking of, or can afford, only buying one orthopedic examination reference. Lastly, don't expect treatment therapies from this book. It is purely diagnostic.
NOTE: Beware! At the time of this writing there was another Amazon page with other sellers selling some sort of "enhanced" version for ~$115 instead of the $80 that you'll find on the main page. I can't see any difference in the two as both come with the CD-ROM. Don't overpay. Even bookstore listing of this book with CD is $80.

Book Description
The good, the bad, and the ugly, served up Bourdain-style.
Bestselling chef and No Reservations host Anthony Bourdain has never been one to pull punches. In The Nasty Bits, he serves up a well-seasoned hellbroth of candid, often outrageous stories from his worldwide misadventures. Whether scrounging for eel in the backstreets of Hanoi, revealing what you didn't want to know about the more unglamorous aspects of making television, calling for the head of raw food activist Woody Harrelson, or confessing to lobster-killing guilt, Bourdain is as entertaining as ever. Bringing together the best of his previously uncollected nonfiction—and including new, never-before-published material—The Nasty Bits is a rude, funny, brutal and passionate stew for fans and the uninitiated alike.
Customer Reviews:
an easy read through a very odd mind.......2007-09-27
Let me say I love Bourdain's writing style and narrative. Self aware and sardonic without taking the joy from life, I was snagged by his autobiographical "Kitchen Confidential" and enjoyed seeing this carry over to his TV travel show "No Reservations" and delighted when people I know say they have encountered Bourdain professionally and he is exactly what he seems.
"Nasty Bits" is an anthology of notes, short essays and light fiction. Stuff too short to stand on it's own but put together as a group it works nicely as a way to pass time or read when you don't want to get to wrapped up time wise. There is a small disappointment in one of two items that a fan will feel have been rehashed. "Food and Loathing in Las Vegas" is a do over of his travel show in Sin City as is part of his essay on Chinese food, but in general,it's all good.
The title sounds like Bourdain is giving up useless itmes but if you know him, he's telling the reader this is what he likes. Bourdain likes the 'nasty bits.' Those food items like sweetbreads and organ meat that many Americans run from. Strange meats and stinky cheeses are among his passions and so with the title, he tells the knowing reading this is what he consideres 'the good stuff.' So take out a bib, get comfortable and dig in.
the not-so-nasty bits.......2007-08-17
Bourdain's international travels have mellowed him somewhat since the days of "Kitchen Confidential." His writing, however, is still a riot. His insights from the kitchen--culinary and otherwise--are a pleasure to behold. The selections here are short and varied, covering everything from Ferran Adria in Catalunya to Las Vegas and the beaches of Brazil. It's a "No Reservations" Bourdain with glimpses of the former reckless bad boy. I guess we all have to grow up...
Gotta Love Tony.......2007-06-27
If you like Mr. Bourdain's show "No Reservations", you'll most likely enjoy this book. One of Tony's best attributes is his story telling ability and reading this book is just like listening to his narratives on the show. Once or twice it was a little too much like the show. The Vegas article repeated some things he said on that episode of the show a bit too much. But most of the book seemed very fresh. His honesty and sense of humor shine through constantly. He's not afraid to admit he used to like heroin while noting that no one is less sympathetic towards other people's habit struggles than an ex-addict. His point of view is cynical yet refreshing. I especially enjoyed his articles about Mexican kitchen workers. I am a white guy in an area where whites are a very small minority and it is easy to get into the "damn Mexicans" mindset. Tony reminds me I don't really want to be like that and he's right. Each of the articles in this book stand alone so you can read them in any order. They're divided into sections so you can read what you are in the mood for - light, heavy, synical, silly. It's all there. And thanks, Tony, for the Namibia episode of N.R.. I laughed so hard it hurt. As for the people who say Tony should be smarter than to eat the stuff he does in faraway lands, boy do they miss the point.
If you watch Bourdain's shows, spend your money elsewhere.......2007-06-27
Most of us go to work every day, but only someone truly lucky can bind all of their e-mails and reports from the past year into a book and sell it. If you watch "No Reservations", you know about everything that's in this book. Shame on you, Bourdain.
If you're not familiar with the author, "Kitchen Confidential" is a much better book. Heck, even "A Cook's Tour" (another Bourdain show) has more behind-the-scenes insight than this waste of space.
That being said, I'll eat you under the table any day, Anthony Bourdain. Choose your meal and location, and I'll be there.
Bourdain's ups and downs.......2007-06-14
I particularly like Bourdain's witty prose. Ordinary events come to life in his spirited narrative. He spares no one, fast-food industry, celebrities, the works. His accounts of things gone wrong are particularly funny. However, since this is a collection of texts published at different times in different periodicals, I have to say that some aged better than others. I simply skipped those I found less interesting. Do not miss the comments section in the back (I almost did!), where he produces a mea culpa for the poorer articles. Next time just leave them out, Tony.

Customer Reviews:
A must have for Radiologists and Orthopedicians.......2003-12-04
Since its first edition, this book has imposed itself as a new classic must have in any radiologist or orthopedicians library.
It is an excellent comprehensive review of orthopedic radiology covering all imaging modalities and all pathological entinties.
It is done in an excellent clear text with extensive radiographs, hand-drawn diagrams and summurizing tables with lot of "never seen before" explanatory diagrams.
reading orthopedic films made easy.......2000-01-18
This is an excellent resource for the non-radiologist. It gives you an idea of what an acceptable film should look like. It organizes your thoughts on what your looking at and what you should be looking for in your films. The photos are crisp, and to clarify subtle findings, out to the side drawings help highlight the feature of interest (very helpful). I will get a copy for my office this year.

Book Description
Following the tremendous success of Cross Bones, Kathy Reichs explores another high-profile topic in Break No Bones -- a case that lands forensic anthropologist Temperance Brennan in the middle of a gruesome international scheme.
Summoned to South Carolina to fill in for a negligent colleague, Tempe is stuck teaching a lackluster archaeology field school in the ruins of a Native American burial ground on the Charleston shore. But when Tempe stumbles upon a fresh skeleton among the ancient bones, her old friend Emma Rousseau, the local coroner, persuades her to stay on and help with the investigation. When Emma reveals a disturbing secret, it becomes more important than ever for Tempe to help her friend close the case.
The body count begins to climb. An unidentified man is found hanging from a tree deep in the woods. Another corpse shows up in a barrel. There are mysterious nicks on bones in several bodies, and signs of strangulation. Tempe follows the trail to a free street clinic with a belligerent staff, a suspicious doctor, and a donor who is a charismatic televangelist. Clues abound in the most unlikely places as Tempe uses her unique knowledge and skills to build her case, even as the local sheriff remains dubious and her own life is threatened.
Tempe's love life is also complicated. Ryan, her current flame, has come down to visit her from Montreal, and Pete, her former husband, is investigating the disappearance of a local woman -- and he and Tempe are staying in the same borrowed beach house. Ryan and Pete compete for her attentions, and Tempe finds herself more distracted by her feelings for both men than she expected.
Break No Bones is a smart, taut thriller featuring the kind of high-stakes crime that makes the headlines every week. Reichs, the inspiration for the hit FOX TV show Bones, is writing at the top of her form, and Tempe has never been more compelling.
Customer Reviews:
A bone to pick.......2007-10-03
While I generally enjoy the Tempe books - and this is overall no exception - this is not my favorite of the series. Tempe is again undecided and scattered through half the book - does she love Pete or does she love Ryan? Is the guilty party Marshall or Daniels or someone else altogether? She's constantly "all in a froth" and "agitated," seemingly forgetful of the fact that she is not a member of the police force and should therefore, perhaps, simply give them the information she is aware of and then stay out of their way. Then again, that would make for a pretty dull book :-) However, I just don't care for the way Tempe is presented in this book - she is entirely too excitable overall and that state of mind seemingly has been transferred onto Andy Ryan as well.
However, the irrepressible Pete is as entertaining as ever and the sub-plot about Emma and her battle with non-Hodgkins Lymphoma is just heart-rending. The actual mystery - what happened to the people who had been killed and the mysterious fracture of only their 6th cervical vertebrae - is great also and keeps you guessing almost to the very end. Overall, I can recommend this to fans of the Reichs' series, as well as fans of the genre of forensic thrillers, as that aspect of the book is fabulous.
Break No Bones.......2007-10-01
Although not my favorite book by this author, it was still very good. In general, I really enjoy this author and would highly recommend any of her books.
Good but flawed........2007-09-30
This entry in the Brennan series is much better than the disasterous Cross Bones. The plot is good and kept me guessing. BUT... as Kirkman correctly pointed out in a previous review coroners do not do autopsies. This isn't a trivial error. Also, one of the bodies in the book has been hung. But the head has falled off. OK - the human head isn't attached to the rest of the body by bone, but only by muscles and ligaments. But the rest of the body is still hanging from the noose. What's keeping it there??? In reality the rest of the body would have fallen when the head fell off. This is a stupid error for Reichs to make.
I'll give it 3 1/2 stars.......2007-09-27
This episode has Tempe Brennan in South Carolina filling in as a teacher at an archeology field school. But she and her students find a recent burial among the Native Indian burials. She's asked to stay in Charleston because the coroner there (who's also Tempe's friend) is ill. Soon another body is found hanging in the forest, and then another washes up in a barrel. Of course, Tempe can't keep her nose out of it and gets involved finding out why these people died, who did it and why. And during this week, she's sharing a friend's home with her estranged husband and her boyfriend. Yeah, right...like that would happen...this IS fiction.
This is a good book for a plane ride or rainy day. And, of course, there's plenty of fodder for the next book.
Coroners do not perform autopsies .......2007-09-27
The entire premise of this book is incorrect. Charleston County has both a coroner and medical examiner system (forensic pathology). The office of the medical examiner would have been involved from the beginning, since the two offices work closely together. To think that an out-of-state anthropologist would be given free rein to evaluate the remains, including having the bones stripped without an autopsy first, is preposterous. She was not a physician, let alone licensed, credentialed and privileged to practice forensic pathology in SC. She may have been invited to consult because of her forensic bone expertise but she would never have been permitted to do what was chronicled.
I trained at MUSC and practiced in Charleston. And I could not believe what I was reading. Ms. Reichs had done her Charleston research well in terms of locations, restaurants and attractions (although two of the plants she listed I had never heard of and I lived there 20 years), but not about the coroner/medical examiner system, which was the crux of the story. I struggled with whether or not to finish the book because I was so incredulous. But I did.
I had read several of her other books and liked them, so I picked this one up at the airport. I thought she had some really great similes and metaphors, but by and large I found her writing self-conscious and superficial. I agree with the reviewers about the lack of character development and the situation with the dueling suitors was a bit far fetched. There was a lot of filler, such as (paraphrased), "I opened my Dell, booted it up, watched the blue screen and got online." I do not know why she had to refer to Boyd as "the chow" over and over. The "twirly eyebrows" got old, too. There were factual errors; veins don't pulse, arteries do. Writing "scrips" instead of "scripts," as an abbreviation for prescriptions. I expected someone in the medical field to know better. I, too, thought the plot was disorganized and strained credulity.
Perhaps I am being too martinetish about the details; probably because I was so off-put by the incorrect framework.
That having been said, I thought she shone when discussing technical aspects and I enjoyed those parts. I also learned that killing people to sell their bodies is called "Burking, "after a Scotsman, William Burke, in the 1820s.
I am giving it a one because of the factual inaccuracy; were it not for that I would have given it a two--it is just not as well written as her others.

Dear Sirs,
I have returned the book "Pathology and genetics of tumors of the soft tissues and bones" because I have already bought by amazon.com in my other account (vencio56@hotmail.com). My mistake.
The book is very good (5 stars).

Book Description
"Gill Sanson's book is a well-researched breath of fresh air that will help women everywhere better trust the wisdom of their bodies." -- Christiane Northrup, M.D.
The Myth of Osteoporosis is a research-based work that provides clear insight into the myths of osteoporosis. These myths motivate both patient and physician into a lifetime of unnecessary testing and drug therapy therapy that can in fact be life-threatening. Gillian Sanson's well-documented explanation of these myths can spare women great anxiety. She takes the fear out of aging and restores women's sense of control over their bodies. She gives women good reasons for challenging the common way that osteoporosis is handled in the United States and in many other industrialized nations.
Customer Reviews:
Some interesting information but highly repetitive.......2007-07-26
I was scared and discouraged when I got
a note from my doctor indicating some
significant bone density loss since my
last bone scan 3 years ago (a subsequent
visit with the doctor revealed the note
had been confusing and partially inaccurate).
The book mentions how frightening an
osteopenia diagnosis can be, and contains
interesting statistics on fracture
rates; the possibility of these
conditions being overdiagnosed;
the notion that normal female aging
is being over-medicalized by
drug companies; the fact that the
miracle drugs have serious side effects;
and the fact that women (and to some
extent doctors) are confused.
All of this is to the good.
BUT - the book is annoyingly repetitive.
It's not a very long book to begin
with and I'll bet if all the repetitive
ideas were removed, it would be no
more than half its length...
It's more like an article that was
reconfigured into a book but without
the addition of more substance.
So - worth reading but not nearly
as good as I anticipated (and hoped) based on the other readers'
glowing recommendations.
Very Clear Book.......2007-06-09
This book cleared up a lot of doubts I had about Osteopennia. I decided to quite taking Fosamax and Celebrex and I started walking and eating the right foods and I feel better than ever. Thanks for this great book.

Fighting the Drug Companies.......2007-06-05
Sanson documents with great clarity how the medical class has decided what examinations define osteoporosis, and how to treat it. Enough experts have warned us that the best cure is a balanced diet for both this problem and many others. Many women also do not know how the medicines for HRT are produced or they might then shun this treatment/
Overall excellent/
The Myth of Osteoporosis.......2007-05-29
This is a wonderful book! My recent purchase was for a dear friend who was just diagnosed with osteoporosis. I had read this book over two years ago. I have become a friend of the author, Gillian Sanson, who resides in New Zealand. Her research is flawless! Physicians should tell their patients to read The Myth of Osteoporosis instead of just giving them prescriptions for bisphosphonates which are being shown to have very frightening side effects. Gillian Sanson's documentary about osteoporosis will be available very soon.
re not the book to buy if you already have severe osteoporosis.......2007-05-09
I was a bit disappointed with the book. I don't recommend buying this book if you already have severe osteoporosis. There is nothing in it which will help you. I think its more for the average person out there is has osteopenia (early osteoporosis). Strong Women, Strong Bones is a better bet for those who already have a diagnosis of osteoporosis.

Book Description
Cooper Gillespie, an extremely intelligent and handsome Welsh springer spaniel, is a dog of discriminating taste and strong opinions. Now Cooper, with the assistance of cookbook author Sally Sampson and the transcription services of his favorite human, Susan Orlean, has put together 50 delectable recipes for snacks, meals, and treats for your canine companion.
Maybe you're cooking everything because your collie has colitis or your Akita has a wheat allergy or your older dog just isn't thriving on commercial kibble. Maybe you're mixing up the occasional biscuit or treat to help your best fur-bearing friend over that I-just-ate-a-tennis- ball-and-don't-feel-so-good episode. Whatever the reason, the recipes in this book (which have been approved by dog trainer and nutritional consultant Stacy Alldredge) will satisfy the most discerning doggie palate. Many of them, in fact, can be shared with a favorite human (though preferably not from the same dish).
Illustrated with more than 50 endearing black-and-white photographs of Cooper and friends by Cami Johnson, and liberally seasoned with stories, quotes, and nutrition tips, Throw Me a Bone makes a dog's dinner something to look forward to.

Lip Smacking and Tail Wagging!!.......2004-09-08
Of all the home made treats I have cooked up so far, the recipies from this book actually get my little doggy to do commands before being asked in the hopes of getting a tasty morsel. I packed a kong full of little bits and pieces from a couple different recipies and for the first time my little doggy made 'yummy' noises while he worked to get out the treasures. My doggy is very finicky, and has given two paws up for each batch made- I HIGHLY reccommend these recipies!!!
Beautiful Book.......2004-03-08
Cooper Gillespie, an adorable Springer Spaniel, is quite the food connoisseur. With a help from his owner, Sally Sampson, he's put together 50 recipes for dogs, his favorite dog related quotes, and photographs. The book was beautiful and well written, but its recipes are high in fat and are not nutritious to a dog. For a treat served scarcely, these recipes are divine to a dog's taste buds.
Great Pictures, but skip the recipes.......2003-12-28
Though I throughly enjoyed the photographs in the book and the writing style, and highly advise people to take control of their canine's (and feline's, for that matter) diet, I wasn't particularly enthused by the recipes in this book.
Often excessively high in fat, and regardless of the nutritionist involved in the recipes, these foods will improve your dogs mood, but not his overall health. The best diet for a dog is obtained through a balanced diet of phosphorus to calcium (protein to bone) comparable to what dogs would have eaten in the wild. Although certainly heads and tails above kibble (as is almost anything), I felt that this book didn't give enough information or research into the nutrition requirements of dogs.
To get the best information, and certianly if you're going to go to the trouble of preparing foods for your dog, then I suggest any of a plethora of books on the subject. "Give your dog a Bone" by Ian Billinghurst, or any of Billinghurst's books, Natural Nutrition for Cats and Dogs by Kymythy R. Schultze, or Raw Meaty Bones Promote Health by Tom Lonsdale. Any of these books will help you plan an effective road to health for your dog without catering to the coffeetable book set. (Although I still LOVED the pictures in this book)
Great recipes.......2003-12-11
I'm giving this dog cookbook the full 5 stars, even though I'm getting rather sick of books "written" by people's pets. The photographs are worth the price alone, but the recipes are fabulous and healthful. There's also a Table of Equivalents included in the back. There are also marvelous quotations sprinkled throughout of famous people's feelings about dogs.
I'm giving this book as a gift, too.
Perfect!!!.......2003-11-27
Between the recipes, photography, quotes and writing, this book is a perfect gift for anyone interested in dogs. I have tried a few recipes, mostly notably Goldies cupcakes and the tuna training treats, both of which my dog LOVED. Even if i never cook anything else (although i will), i love just looking at this book. It makes me laugh.

Book Description
Human Osteology, Second Edition is designed for students and professionals who wish to advance their osteological skills in terms of accurately identifying human skeletal remains, however isolated and fragmentary. These remains can then be used to deduce information about the original lives of the deceased individuals. This book will continue to be an essential text for courses on the human skeleton, as well as a basic reference and field manual for professional osteologists and anatomists, forensic scientists, paleontologists, and archaeologists.
Human Osteology, Second Edition includes nearly a decade of advances in osteological research since the first edition. Each chapter has been strengthened and updated, including a new chapter on molecular osteology and four new case studies drawn from more recent research. This edition also includes a valuable guide to electronic resources in osteology.
Key Features
* Lavishly illustrated with hundreds of exceptional photographs and drawings specifically designed to show a maximum amount of anatomical information
* Based on nearly 25 years of teaching human osteology
* Skeletal parts shown life-size for ease of study and use
* Four new case studies emphasize the correct and positive identification of human bones and teeth, which is fundamental in paleontology, archaeology, and forensic science
Customer Reviews:
Human Osteology!.......2007-09-28
This book is very helpful when learning human osteology. I really like how many pictures there are. If I can't have the real object in front of me then the book is the next best thing. Although the book is kind of pricey I think it was worth the money. Over all very good text book for the subject.
Use for Siding of Hands and Feet.......2006-12-07
I've had no problems underlining in pencil with this book. either underline lightly or place a piece of cardstock between the pages. despite the fact that a lot of bone features are ignored, it is worth the price to buy it used just for the siding of the carpals, metacarpals, phalanges, tarsals, metatarsals, and pedal phalanges.
In our human skeletal analysis lab we have at least 4 texts, including this one. Each one is lacking something the other has. It seems common for these types of texts. I've had to buy this book, and another, in addition to the required text for the course just to cover all aspects about osteology (except pathology, which is covered in a book that costs 180 bucks).
That said, if you're a physical anth major, you'll probably need more than one book anyway, since we need to know every feature on each individual bone.
useful text, but not perfect.......2006-11-09
This book is a good introductory text, and I have referred to it many times, but I can't give it 5 stars...
As someone else said, the descriptions of features on the bones were sometimes lacking.
And while the photos are big, bold, and very helpful, sometimes the single-source lighting throws shadows over features on the bones. This didn't bother me too much because I was lucky enough to study in a lab with dozens of specimens I could use to familiarize myself with the landmarks, but for students who don't have access to real bones, these photos may be insufficient.
A dissenting opinion...........2004-01-10
In order to temper the unrestrained exuberance of the former reviews, I think it is appropriate to point out what I believe are a couple of major shortcomings of this book.
Yes the photography is very good. However, the paper it is printed on is not so good. Don't try underlining any of the text with a pen or pencil; the line will be transferred to the following page. The thin paper combined with the ink on the opposite side forms a tracing paper when you mark on the page. For a price that completely wrecks a hundred dollar bill, I think the customer deserves more. Mr. White is surely wagging his vestigial tail all the way to the bank.
Most importantly, the descriptive sections of the text are very brief, with many bone features ignored. The Running Press reprint of the 1901 edition of Gray's Anatomy has a much more thorough (and much much cheaper) text of bone anatomy, although many of its formerly great illustrations have been reduced to dark blots (evidently in an effort to make the text more legible). In White's book, I would have preferred that seemingly precious text space be used for description of anatomy rather than the author spinning his (and academia's) fairy tales of how fish turned into men.
Excellent.......2003-04-14
This book is an excellent source for information on learning the bones, how to side them, and many other interesting aspects of osteology.

Book Description
From the acclaimed author of River Town comes a rare portrait, both intimate and epic, of twenty-first-century China as it opens its doors to the outside world.
A century ago, outsiders saw Chinaas a place where nothing ever changes. Today the coun-try has become one of the most dynamic regions on earth. That sense of time—the contrast between past and present, and the rhythms that emerge in a vast, ever-evolving country—is brilliantly illuminated by Peter Hessler in Oracle Bones, a book that explores the human side of China's transformation.
Hessler tells the story of modern-day China and its growing links to the Western world as seen through the lives of a handful of ordinary people. In addition to the author, an American writer living in Beijing, the narrative follows Polat, a member of a forgotten ethnic minority, who moves to the United States in searchof freedom; William Jefferson Foster, who grew up in an illiterate family and becomes a teacher; Emily,a migrant factory worker in a city without a past; and Chen Mengjia, a scholar of oracle-bone inscriptions, the earliest known writing in East Asia, and a man whosetragic story has been lost since the Cultural Revolution. All are migrants, emigrants, or wanderers who find themselves far from home, their lives dramatically changed by historical forces they are struggling to understand.
Peter Hessler excavates the past and puts a remarkable human face on the history he uncovers. In a narrative that gracefully moves between the ancient and the present, the East and the West, Hessler captures the soul of a country that is undergoing a momentous change before our eyes.

Not Rivertown, but nontheless breathtaking.......2007-10-03
Hessler's follow-up to his enchanting 'River Town' is far more immersed in history and sociology than its younger brother. Through the witty structure that intersperses the ancient with the modern, like China itself, Hessler is able to speak on every issue from the formation of the ancient Chinese writing system to the asian-food deliveries of his comrade, Polat.
Without a doubt, Hessler's writing has improved since 'River Town'. This is a book that constantly glances over its shoulder into the past, consulting with aging scholars and the dead, and Hessler manages this with constant refrains that charm the reader as much as they remind him of the greater context of the story.
For any student who wants a healthy overview of modern China, from the macro to the micro, 'Oracle Bones' is an excellent starting choice.
Not as engaging as River Town.......2007-06-24
Peter Hessler is an excellent writer but for some reason this book didn't engage me the way River Town did. The one thing I will remember very distinctly from this book is that he writes of how happy the people of China were by the 9/11 attacks. This I will not forget.
informative.......2007-06-05
Using stories of individual people the author attempts to explain the complex history of China. The author's research and experiences in China thread through the narrative, but I felt the book could have been edited into a more coherent whole. Still, I think readers will enjoy the book and come away informed as well.
A wonderful read - highly engaging.......2007-04-23
Petter Hessler's "Oracle Bones: A Journey Between China's Past and Present" focused on his work as a journalist living in Beijing. After working teaching English in Fuling for two years, Hessler was well-versed with the Chinese language and culture. He befriended, Polat, a Uighur, living in Beijing as a black market currency trader. Hessler focused a big portion of his book on the Uighurs, one of the ethnic minority groups living in Xinjiang, a large area which bordered countries like Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan, Afghanistan and Pakistan. It was interesting to read about the strained relationships between the Uighurs who were Islamics and the Communist government. Hessler also touched briefly on whole China-Taiwan issue as well as the Falun Gong's movement.
In addition to his friendship with Polat, Hessler also did research on oracle bones, which was the earliest known writing in East Asia - tracing the work of the one oracle bones scholar, Chen Mengjia. Chen was considere to be a rightist during the Cultural Revolution and his work even though was extremely important but did not receive the well-deserved recognition. Throughout the book, Hessler interviewed former students of Chen, his family members, and foreign scholars to learn more about Chen's life and work.
Hessler also wrote about his former students in Fuling, a few of which worked as English teachers themselves. Through his students, Hessler was able to tell another story - this new generation in the Chinese society who were not affected by Mao's policies but who seemed to be very much influenced by the Western world and their common goal is to acquire wealth. It was interesting to read about China's new economy is transforming the country and the people.
This was an excellent read for me, as Hessler was able to combine history, Chinese culture and values and contemporary issues to make this a must-read for students studying the Chinese history and culture. I was pleasantly surprised to read about the Uighurs's experiences in China and their views on the Chinese people and the Communist government. It is rare to find books (on the subject of China) that touches upon the ethnic minorities living in Xinjiang. Hessler was able to write from a non-bias, and fair perspective of the country and its people. I read Hessler's previous book, "River Town" and was quite impressed and I think "Oracle Bones" is an even better read. Highly recommended!
Understanding China through its language.......2007-02-25
Peter Hessler, The New Yorker's Beijing correspondent and the first foreign journalist to report from China since before the Communist Revolution, uses the excavation of China's earliest written language as a symbol for understanding modern-day China by unearthing and interpreting the lives of individuals - from Polat, a Uighar immigrant to the United States, to Emily, an idealistic young factory worker in the industrial town of Shenzhen, where products are cheaply manufactured for export to the capitalist West. Hessler's wit and compassion makes this a must-read for understanding the nation slated to replace the United States as the world's next superpower.
