People Should Not Laugh. Why? Rapture is Real, and Coming Soon!.......2005-11-26
This is weird. The people who place The Rapture down are those who most likely will stay behind. Everything pretty much is in the Bible, about Our Lord Coming Back to Earth and Ruling it forever, but the 7 year Tribulation has to take into effect. Before the tribulation happening, believers in Christ will picked up by Christ Himself...we will disappear from this planet and Join Christ Himself in the Sky. Everything is in the Bible. But great thing Hal Breaks everything down in plain English for all, but still i cannot believe the people on here who don't believe. Get Right with Christ, so we all can be picked up. Get this book and know what the Rapture means, and its significance. Know the truth, and it will set you free. The Rapture is a special plan by God in order to pick up all Christ believers before the antichrist comes onto the world scene. Well, who is the antichrist? He will be the devil himself, but he will be in the flesh, he will be a man with great powers. This antichrist will bring in the mark of the beast into the picture and he will persuade many to take up that mark. Anyone taking the mark will be casted into hell on judgement day. Save yourself, believe in Christ the Son of God, so you can be Raptured (picked up) before the tribulation period initiates. Book highly recommended. Many unbelievers will stay behind, don't chose that fate. Get this book and see the light, embrace the light, and follow the light.
Christianity is the way in order for one to have Salvation. But those who sell religion our who use religion to plaster people will stay behind, and will not be picked up. Hal's work is no joke. The antichrist is alive, he is in Europe, yes right now, in 2005...waiting in the wings! Believe in Christ.

What happened to the Dirty Commies who were gonna end it all, Hal-Baby?
As a Buddhist, I REALLY, REALLY TRY to have a live and let live approach to others' faith - I'd rather look for the ideas we have in common than engage in a theological slamfest. BUT...
The entire "End Times" theology is a never-ending joke rehashed during every difficult period of western civilization over the last 1,000 years at least, and the fact that those who promote it seem intent on doing everything they can to bring it about is scary as all get-up. I really feel sorry for people who see their only means of salvation in the destruction of the world and the Billions of lives lost inherent in that proposition.
Oh, I forgot...we don't have a CHOICE in this matter. Yeah, right, and the Jews are The Chosen People - just ask 'em!!!
BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA !!!
Gotta run now, and go try to make this world a better place to live.
ZERO STARS.
This book is THE decoder key for Revelation - A must read!.......2002-04-04
Revelation is the only book in the Bible that specifically promises the reader a special blessing for reading it.. (at the end). The problem is, a straight read through of Revelation can be confusing at best, because it is written in symbolic language. The Rapture is BY FAR the best book I've ever read for decoding this language; it walks you through the entire book of Revelation step by step, and presents the background, supporting logic, and meanings for the mysteries you encounter in this most difficult book. In subjects where there are honest differences of opinion, Hal presents both sides of the argument, and provides his take on the pros and cons of each. It is a balanced, clear and thought provoking work, well worth your time whether you are a believer or not.
MORE LIES FROM LINDSEY ..........2002-03-01
People, ole Hal Lindsey predicted the world would end in the early 80's in "Late Great Planet Earth," did it? How many more times has he predicted it since then? has it? Where ole Hal is conscerned meditate on Matt 7:21-22, Mark 13:22,1 John 4:1 etc. This is a teaching popular among Evangelical Protestants and asserts that Christians will be miraculaously delivered from the tribulation and that only the "unsaved" will suffer under the rule of the Antichrist. The idea that Christians will be "raptured"-that is, taken up into heaven-before the tribulation is an invention of the ninteenth century. No one in the previous 1800 yrs. of Christian history ever came up with such a notion...Anyone that likes a book like this needs to read (Matthew 25:13)
Rapture.......2002-02-25
I read this book for the first time in 1986 and, because I had passed it on, had to buy it again in order to re-read it. I find Hal Lindsey's information to be very balanced and Scripturally correct. In our world today, we as Christians wonder if we are fast approaching the rapture, and Mr. Lindsey's book is a good guide to discerning the times while awaiting the hope of our Lord. The book may be 20 years old, but it's value endures. I highly recommend this book if you are truly searching for the signs of the end.
Book Description
Jennifer Harbury's investigation into torture began when her husband disappeared in Guatemala in 1992; she told the story of his torture and murder in Searching for Everardo. For over a decade since, Harbury has used her formidable legal, research, and organizing skills to press for the U.S. government's disclosure of America's involvement in harrowing abuses in Latin America, Southeast Asia, and the Middle East. A draft of this book had just been completed when the first photos from Abu Ghraib were published; tragically, many of Harbury's deepest fears about America's own abuses were graphically confirmed by those horrific images. This urgently needed book offers both well-documented evidence of the CIA's continuous involvement in torture tactics since the 1970s and moving personal testimony from many of the victims. Most important, Harbury provides solid, convincing arguments against the use of torture in any circumstances: not only because it is completely inconsistent with all the basic values Americans hold dear, but also because it has repeatedly proved to be ineffective: Again and again, "information" obtained through these gruesome tactics proves unreliable or false. Worse, the use of torture by U.S. client states, allies, and even by our own operatives, endangers our citizens and especially our troops deployed internationally.
Customer Reviews:
Unique in bringing Central American history into the debate.......2006-03-14
Harbury is at her best when exploring the CIA's involvement in Latin America. She draws striking parallels between the torture and abuses committed in Central America in the 1980s & 90s and the heinous situation in Iraq today.
Where this book falls flat, however, is in her ability to go beyond a mere expose of the interrogation techniques that have become a matter of policy. Her recommendations for improving our country's adherence to international standards prohibiting torture lack teeth. She makes a very compelling argument about why it is wrong to torture, but does not make a convincing enough exploration of where we go from here. In addition, the parallel she tries to draw at the end to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict feels forced and tangential.
Nonetheless, this book succinctly summarizes the major issues concerning the U.S. and torture and is a good primer for someone who may not be as familiar with the issues. Anyone who has kept up with the flood of articles appearing in the Washington Post, the New Yorker, the New York Review of Books and elsewhere, however, may find large pieces of this book repetitive.
Truth, Torture, and the American Way.......2005-10-17
Ms. Harbury's book is a must read for anyone interested in the facts surrounding America's all too frequent resort to terror and torture. Ms. Harbury is a true patriot who holds up a mirror to America and forces us to take a good long look at what's done by our Government in our name.
A Must Read for Anyone Who Cares About Human Rights .......2005-10-14
This book chillingly places the Bush Administration's torture policies in the proper historical perspective. The so-called war on terror is not the first time the U.S. has employed abduction, torture, and murder to further its political agenda. As Ms. Harbury thoroughly and unflinchingly reveals, throughout the 70s, 80s, and 90s, the United States (directly and by proxy) abducted, tortured, murdered, and "disappeared" thousands of people in El Salvador, Nicaragua, and Guatemala, all in the name of fighting communism. It is a history that American nationalists ignore or claim never really happened. It did happen and we are witnessing history repeated itself in Iraq, Afghanistan, and the various nations to which we ship detainees to be tortured. Anyone who cares about human rights should read this book. Anyone who does not care about human rights should also read this book, on the off chance that it may resuscitate his/her soul or conscience.

People teens admire talk about God.......2007-04-13
Author Amy Hammond Hagberg wanted to help teens--her own and others--answer questions about God, including the big question: "How do you know he's real?"
Hagberg wrote to sports stars, recording artists and other celebrities, asking them to reflect on their life experiences and share how the reality of God was making a difference to them personally and professionally. The responses she received--from NBA players, Christian musicians, 'American Idol' contestants and others--are honest, revealing, and often compelling.
The resulting book is a collection of celebrity essays: mini-bios that focus on the reality of God in the midst of media attention, success and failure, and broken relationships. Contributors include Dwight Howard of the Orlando Magic basketball team, quarterback David Carr of the Houston Texans, and popular Christian recording artist Clay Crosse.
Some of the interviews are especially helpful for Hagberg's original target readers: teens. Among these, Chrissy Conway of 'Zoe Girl' talks about her parents' divorce, the party scene, and the twists and turns along her personal career path in ways that connect with teens and with anyone who has ever considered attempting a career in music.
Hagberg is a gifted and skilled writer who keeps readers turning the pages as she unpacks celebrity affirmations of the presence of God in their lives. A great gift book for readers from teens through Gen X, but the stories here will interest readers of any age!
Note: Reviewer Dr. David Frisbie is an author and Executive Director of The Center for Marriage & Family Studies in Del Mar, California.
Armchair Interviews says: Anything that can help teens understand their role in living a good life is good.
Celebrities share their faith.......2007-03-11
This is an ideal book to give to people who have questions about becoming a Christian, and who love sports and music celebrities.
44 extreme sports and music celebrities tell their stories in this book, from Jonny Lang (recording artist), to Barlow Girl (rock group), Kimiko Soldati (Olympic diving), CJ Hobgood (surfer), Dwight Howard (NBA player, Orlando Magic), Mick Hannah (downhill mountain bike racer), Jimmie McGuire (professional motocross rider) and more.
They share hard times they faced, how they became Christians and how their paths are more joyful due to their faith. Being a Green Bay Packer fan I turned to Kabeer Gbaja-Biamila's story of growing up in South Central Los Angeles with a tough background, a Muslim dad and a Christian mom, and how his becoming a Christian led to his current happy family life and NFL career. Christian Hosoi, professional skateboarder, after serious drug problems, is now leading a skateboarding ministry.
The two page "God's Road Map" at the end of each celebrity's story contains perceptive questions and Scriptures. Sports and music lovers will enjoy this book, and it can even be a "past watchful dragons book" that will steer doubting people on a new clear path.
god unplugged.......2007-02-02
God Unplugged by Ammy Hagberg was very interesting. It is 403 pages long and was published in 2006 by Destiny Image. In the story top athletes, musicians, and also stars tell how god helped them get where they wanted to be and changed their lives.
In the story there were 44 celebrity reflections on true life experiences with god. Many of these celebrities have been extremely low in their lives and god has pulled them out of them. Also in some cases they have had no luck in there lives and finally achieved their goals after they gave there lives god. All of these people believe that god has either given them opportunities or even the strength to work through where they were to get to where they want to be.
I thought that this was a good book. I enjoyed reading it and seeing how god has changed all of these people's lives. The strengths of this book are that it has top named celebrities that people actually want to read about. The weakness of this book is that there is nothing to find out nest so you don't have a reason to keep reading. I did like how god actually gave them the strength to continue and succeed in life. The writing was very boring to me, but I liked the idea.
The book gave a lasting effect on me because I have a saint Christopher necklace that my grandma gave to me before she passed away and that keeps me safe when I race motorcross. So, I think that god has a great power on us. I would recommend this book, it will make you think.
After reading this, you certainly KNOW he is real!.......2007-01-25
Truly, this, and the book before this, are really awesome books!
** Why?
Because they give some very good insights into other peoples way to God. Not only that, if you don't know the Bible inside and out (and even if you do, actually!), there are quotations from the Bible explaining the why and hows, depending on the story of the person interviewed.
All this, with Amy Hagbergs very nice way of writing (down to earth serious mixed with a nice blend of humor) makes this book a pleasure to read!
Personally, I strongly recommend this book to everyone. It might be those who Seek, or those who have found, it doesn't matter, in my opinion! :)
Fantastic book!.......2007-01-24
What a great book! Amy Hagberg has gathered some of today's biggest sports and music celebs to talk about how they know God is real. This book is in stark contrast to so many of today's depressing, tragedy-focused headlines. And the list of celebrities is impressive! [...]
Book Description
One can read Lurie as one might read Jane Austen, with continual delight, Joyce Carol Oates has said about novelist Alison Lurie. And author John Fowles has remarked, There is no American writer I have read with more consistent pleasure and sympathy over the years. Now, with her fine new novel, Lurie returns to the setting that have delighted her fans throughout her long career the university campus.
An energetic and attractive forty, Jane Mackenzie is the administrative director at Corinth University's Center for the Humanities. Unfortunately, her formerly healthy and athletic husband Alan, a history fellow at the center, has suffered a debilitating back injury and is becoming more and more dependent on Jane. But with the arrival of Delia Delaney, a pre-Raphaelite beauty, bestselling writer, and the newest celebrity at the center, Alan gradually begins to recover, becoming well enough for a not-so-harmless liaison. Meanwhile, Jane, who all her life has tried to be a good woman, finds herself falling in love with Delia's husband.
A modern social satire that recalls the best of David Lodge and Mary McCarthy, Truth and Consequences is one of Lurie's finest works, echoing her popular university novels Foreign Affairs and The War Between the Tates.
Customer Reviews:
In need of further editing..........2007-04-15
As other readers have commented, there is little need to rehash what the book is about, thanks to other reviews. Unlike other Lurie novels, which I feel were quite original, Truth and Consequences seems repetitive and boring in parts. What starts with a strong beginning line, and compelling first twenty pages, ends predictably. The relationships are too obvious. The inner narratives-- especially Jane's-- become mildly annoying. In addition to all of this, the editing seems to be a bit lacking. There are missing punctuation marks, a misspelling of Alan's name, entire sentences that are repeated, and an overuse of the word "clearly". It's a quick read, but not an especially good one.
Loved it!.......2007-03-11
TRUTH AND CONSEQUENCES by Alison Lurie
March 10, 2007
Rating: 4 Stars
TRUTH AND CONSEQUENCES was my introduction to Alison Lurie, and I was very impressed. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize, Lurie has a knack for words. And for such a short novel, I felt she did a great job in writing about a complex set of people whose lies and lives are entwined in such a way that one can only imagine disaster awaiting all four of them by the end of the book.
Jane Mackenzie is the wife of an older man, a distinguished professor and scholar who had recently injured his back. His pain is so great it is debilitating, and now she deals with his new life, that of a handicapped man, who can barely move and expects his wife to be at his beck and call. Jane fell in love with his body and his mind, but what she sees now is not the man she married. But she carries on, knowing that she must be loyal to him, a man that gave her such love and pleasure for the past sixteen years.
Alan Mackenzie feels that things will not get any better. He's lost interest in his work, although he has just been accepted as a University Fellow where he teaches and Jane works. Coincidentally, Jane is an administrator for the Matthew Unger Humanities Center where Alan is to be working, and to compound his problems with his back, one of the new fellows will be Delia Delaney, known throughout as being difficult and somewhat of a diva. Upon arrival, she covets the office that Alan will be occupying, and hence the drama begins.
Delia's presence causes trouble for Alan and Jane's marriage, but Jane is unaware of the relationship that begins between the two of them. She thinks that Alan looks upon her with disdain, not realizing that he's actually lusting after Delia. On the other hand, Jane is befriended by Delia's husband Henry, a poet who no longer writes. Alan and Jane now live double lives, never letting on to the other what is going on. Jane's unhappiness in her own marriage, however, does not cause her to stray at first, but she does realize how horrible her relationship with Alan is once she develops a true friendship with Henry, a man that truly seems to care about Jane.
Readers will root for Jane and hope that Alan gets what's coming to him, and for me, the book ended on a note that I thought resolved all the relationships. Not everyone gets a happy ending. TRUTH AND CONSEQUENCES was a wonderfully written book, short but to the point. I will definitely look for more by Alison Lurie.
underwhelmed.......2006-12-28
This is less a review than a reaction--others have "reviewed" the tale well. I found the book ultimately disappointing. The characters were either fairly "stock" or minimally explored, and the story seemed to progress almost on automatic pilot. So predictable in places, and so "surface" in others. Some symbolism was almost ridiculous in its transparency. It seems to me that not a lot of effort was spent on this fairly formulaic novel. Some reviewers loved the character of Delia, but I found her kind of revolting, actually. Because I had some time to read over the holidays, I finished the book, but not with enormous pleasure. This is not one of Lurie's finest efforts.
Slightly formulaic, but very readable.......2006-12-28
Worthy wife Jane falls out of love with her husband Alan who has become totally self-centred because of consistent terrible back pains (the descriptions of which throughout the novel are rather repetitive). She falls guiltily in love with Henry, while Alan falls for the Henry's narcissistic, manipulative but gorgeous wife Delia. It is a slightly formulaic campus novel, and for most of the book you think it is fairly predictable; you think you can guess how it will probably end, but ... well, see whether you have guessed right. It's not as good a book as Lurie's Foreign Affairs, with which I was much more involved, but, like all her other books, this one is written with effortless ease and slips down easily and pleasantly.
Myth and Mischief in Academia.......2006-12-23
Truth and Consequences by Alison Lurie is a novel of academia. The setting is a thinly disguised Ithaca, Tompkins County, NY and Cornell University. Nevertheless this book is only marginally realistic. The characters are exaggerated, the academic descriptions simplistic, and the plot likewise. Lurie's descriptions are trite in the extreme and much of her writing is like a "crisis romance"-type paperback. The women (especially Jane) moan and sob, shiver with a thrill when their lovers touch them, and so on. Much of the dialogue is equally flat with lots of "yeah"s and similarly unacademic phrases. None of the characters seem particularly well-educated or very interested in academic pursuits. They are interested in themselves and their failing marriages and affairs, and middle-age health problems. In many superficial ways this is a typical trite "chick" book, as another reviewer mentioned.
Nevertheless I very much liked this book, and I am a guy. I should disclose that I live in Ithaca and attended Cornell. Many of the details of the setting are accurate--The Farmers' Market, the lake, the roads, the campus, and weather. Despite the flatness of the characters Lurie conjures some kind of magic and makes them come alive and in a way that made me care about them. I was not bored for a moment reading the book, and I bore easily with domestic romances. Somehow the author conjures out of the simplistic, trite, and flat contours a story and characters that are interesting and engaging. I found myself wrapped up in their marital and romantic intrigues. In some ways Lurie's writing reminds, perhaps, of Louis Auchincloss'. Simple, not realistic, but representative of social realities and with a kind of universal appeal that transcends mere storytelling. And Lurie manages to keep our interest without any descriptions of sloppy sex, violence, perversion, or insanity, unlike e.g. John Banville's Shroud which has all of those and fails dismally. See my review. The contrast could not be more stark than that between Banville's Shroud and Lurie's Truth and Consequences. Yet both are about the romantic intrigues of aging academics. Banville's failed and disgusting novel is everything Truth and Consequences is not. Truth and Consequences is all quite bland--really, nothing you couldn't read to your ten year old niece. How Lurie does it, I'm not quite sure, but she does.

Earth, water, fire, air,
Aid me in this task I dare.
Where Cole wanders let me see.
As I will,
So mote it be.
Cole is working late, and her sisters are having a girls' night in, so on the spur of the moment, Phoebe accepts what seems like an innocent date with a friendly stranger. But good intentions are quickly misconstrued when Cole leaves work early to surprise Phoebe -- and is stunned to find her sharing a meal with another man.
Cole can't believe that Phoebe would betray him, and Phoebe can't believe Cole would even think she'd betray him. Their escalating argument quickly highlights some fundamental trust issues they each harbor. But soon they discover themselves trapped in the underworld, at the center of a lovelorn demon's plot to destroy the Power of Three. If Cole and Phoebe can't reconcile their suspicions and insecurities, there's more than their own relationship at risk!

For Pheobe/Cole fans.......2005-08-20
This book is by far my favorite charmed book!!!I loved it. I love Pheobe and Cole. If you love them then get this book . I also liked all the kinds Greek Mythology of the underworld in it. I couldn't put it down great book
Good!.......2005-06-18
I have to say that before reading Truth and Consequemces, I had some doubts about it, due to some rather unfavourable reviews I read concerning this Charmed novel by Cameron Dokey. However , I bought the book as the plot seemed highly interesting to me.
Here is the plot:
Here are some points of interest I found in this book:
1)I liked the scene where Paige, Piper and Leo hug Cole so as to support him in his quest! It was a warm scene, written in an emotional way.
2)It was good that Cole was the central character in this Charmed book. Most of them do not ''use'' Cole so much.
3)Leo, Piper and Paige worked as a team. They were good and showed the tight bond that connects them.
Although Truth and Consequences runs smoothly, its end is not satisfying. After all this Cole went through, he and Phoebe are saved by a simple spell?!! Anyway, even though it is not flawless,Truth and Consequences is a nice read. Recommended!
truth:not that interesting.consequence:wasted money........2004-08-30
The book has a useless storyline.Although there was a few points of interest, true Charmed fans would NOT want to read this one again.I rarely buy the latest Charmed books because I just don't have the money but I decided to buy this one.Stupid idea.
where's the magic.......2004-06-04
thi book has very little magic in it so if thats what your after i think you'd be disapointed with this book. this book is mainly about pheobe and coles love with is very behind the times compared to the tv series plus i feel that this book ignored the main theme of charmed way to much, and that is MAGIC where was it?i think this book really doesn't do charmed many favours however if your not into magic and just want an action romantic this is for you
truth and consequences (charmed).......2004-02-16
cole calls phoebe saying he has to cancell there date as hes working late and so she goes to what seems an innocent date with another man, which is then ruined by cole who comes home early from work to suprise phoebe. he can not believe she would ever cheat on him and she can not believe that he would ever believe that she cheated on him. their escalating argument quickly highlights some fundamental trust issues they each harbor, but soon phoebe is trapped in the underworld and cole is forced to save her ... alone but pipers spell to make her connected to cole is endangering her can cole save phoebe without killing himsalf ... or piper ?

Product Description
The current trend toward machine-scoring of student work, Ericsson and Haswell argue, has created an emerging issue with implications for higher education across the disciplines, but with particular importance for those in English departments and in administration. The academic community has been silent on the issue—some would say excluded from it—while the commercial entities who develop essay-scoring software have been very active. Machine Scoring of Student Essays is the first volume to seriously consider the educational mechanisms and consequences of this trend, and it offers important discussions from some of the leading scholars in writing assessment. Reading and evaluating student writing is a time-consuming process, yet it is a vital part of both student placement and coursework at post-secondary institutions. In recent years, commercial computer-evaluation programs have been developed to score student essays in both of these contexts. Two-year colleges have been especially drawn to these programs, but four-year institutions are moving to them as well, because of the cost-savings they promise. Unfortunately, to a large extent, the programs have been written, and institutions are installing them, without attention to their instructional validity or adequacy. Since the education software companies are moving so rapidly into what they perceive as a promising new market, a wider discussion of machine-scoring is vital if scholars hope to influence development and/or implementation of the programs being created. What is needed, then, is a critical resource to help teachers and administrators evaluate programs they might be considering, and to more fully envision the instructional consequences of adopting them. And this is the resource that Ericsson and Haswell are providing here.
Book Description
A 2002 Christianity Today Book of the Year!Postmodernism. The term slowly filtered into our vocabularies about three decades ago and now permeates most discussions of the humanities. Those who tout the promises and perils of this twentieth-century intellectual movement have filled many a bookshelf. And in a previous book, Postmodernizing the Faith: Evangelical Responses to the Challenge of Postmodernism, Millard J. Erickson provided his own summary of several evangelical responses--both positive and negative--to the movement. Now in this book Erickson offers his own promised in-depth analysis and constructive response.
- What are the intellectual roots of postmodernism?
- Who are its most prominent exponents?
- What can we learn from their critique of modernism?
- Where do their assumptions and analyses fail us?
- Where do we go from here?
- What might a post-postmodernism look like?
Erickson addresses these issues with characteristic discernment, clarity and evenhandedness, neither dismissing the insights of postmodern thought nor succumbing uncritically to its allure. An important book for all who are concerned with commending Christian truth to the culture within which we live.

Hypermodern.......2002-03-20
This book is an analysis of postmodernism (or neo-pragmatism, post-Nietzschean philosophy or maybe just relativism) for those looking for a deeper understanding of the subject. Actually, since postmodernism doesn't have any clear sense, it is probably better to view this book as an introduction to Rorty, Derrida, Fish and Foucault (some might object that no clear sense can be found here either, but anyway).
The book first details some of the main aspects of the premodern view, the view that the 'postmodernists' are spending their efforts to refute, or at lest blur many of the distinctions made by Plato and his type (appearance-reality made -found etc.).
Following the history of western thought to the modern period (the next chapter of the book) the major thoughts of Descartes, Kant and Newton are discussed. The historical periods prior to the 'postmodern' take up about the first 100 pages and give anyone unfamiliar a good understanding of what is about to fall apart or be fuzzed up by the four horsemen that come on the scene next.
Actually, the philosophical views held by Rorty and company where expounded prior to their coming - the chapter dealing with these men (the predecessors) is called 'twentieth-century transitions to postmodernism'. The cast of characters includes Heidegger, Wittgenstein, Gadamer and Kuhn. The book is as complete as one would hope and deals with other philosophers I failed to mention here -- but the main focus of the book is on the four most recent exponents of 'postmodernism' . Allot of the book, the first half or more, is solely descriptive with a critique coming in the latter sections.
I would recommend this book to anyone looking for a good intro. into the thoughts of Rorty Derrida, Fish and Foulcaut (postmodernism)-- although the book ends up being critical of much of what these men said it is a fair treatment.

Truth or Consequences.......2006-11-10
'In some cultures, if you saved a person's life, they belong to you forever'
When oldest brother Adian O'Rourke saves plucky reporter Zoe Zagretti at the robbery that held his brother Con, he doesn't realize he would get his own personal fan. Six months later and Zoe has made it her mission to find out what happened with Brian O'Rourke and his death, and what Tony DiMarco had to do with it. Someone doesn't like Zoe digging up the past and will do anything to keep the past buried. With the reluctant help of Adian they soon become a target for violence. During this time Zoe and Adian overcome their dark pasts and find true passion for the first time.
Second in the series of Forever in a 24hr Day and Diana does it again. Not only are the characters great but there is more insight into the past of the O'Rourke brothers. You get more involved with the family and can't help but love the fact that though the characters know each other for a long period of time, it only takes 24hrs for them to realize what they have felt since they first met. So far this is my favorite out of the series.
Fast-paced, fun read!.......2005-06-06
Once again Diana Duncan proves she's got what it takes with Truth or Consequences, the second in her "Forever in a Day" series. The books follow the exploits of a family of delicious SWAT heroes and the women who dare to go toe-to-toe with them.
Duncan's voice is witty and engaging, and her characters 3-d and well-fleshed out. This is Aidan's story - he's the oldest of the O'Rourke clan.
The book follows a critical 24-hour period. Now it would seem difficult to make you believe these characters are meant for each other when you only get to see a 24-hour period, but Duncan succeeds in making you believe in the HEA.
I chuckled frequently while reading this action-packed book, and I also choked up in just the right spots toward the end. Diana Duncan packs an emotional whallop. If you like your romance novels with plenty of action, strong, yummy, heroes, and plenty of emotion, give this one a try.

Nick Waplington: You Love Life

Book Description
Nick Waplington has been taking photographs in and around Truth or Consequences, a small town in New Mexico, for nearly ten years. Typical and unremarkable in many ways, the town voted to change its name to that of a celebrated radio quiz show in 1950. Waplington records the town behind the extraordinary name, the lives of its people and the landscape they live in while at the same time constructing a personal tribute to American photography, paying homage to such great pioneers of the genre as Edward Weston and Walker Evans.

Not much truth here unfortunately........2002-07-01
The small town of Truth or Consequences, just down the road aways from Albuquerque on I25 in New Mexico, first attracted the attention of British photographer Nick Waplington in 1993. This collection of one hundred and thirty-five color photos are the result of several visits to the town and surrounding area over the years. When I first got the book I had a quick flick through the pages and I was impressed with the color quality and the subject matter.
However, I have now looked through the photos several times and I find the whole selection disappointing, I don't think there are more than fourteen that are worth looking at again and again. The sort of photos that have a strong composition (essential) depth, good color, and subject matter that draws the viewer into the photo. Far too many of the rest are no better than snaps, taken quickly and then onto the next exposure. Annoyingly eighteen are devoted to some kind of parade in the town and there are at least two that any professional photographer would probably reject at first viewing when they came back from the lab.
The back of the book has nineteen photos Nick Waplington took on a journey to Las Vegas in November 2000. Nothing special here except for a stunning shot of a cowboy statue surrounded by buildings, street furniture and signs (ONE WAY, PARKING, ENTRANCE etc). This one shot has the feel of the great FSA photos of the thirties and it is a pity that the majority of the rest in the book did not show the same quality as this one and really show what Truth or Consequences was like.
The book starts with a twelve page introduction by writer John Slyce about the town and the photos and it occurred to me after reading it that the writing is as uninteresting as most of the images, for example... "It is through triangulated acts of some ironic quotation that `Truth or Consequences' gains critical force", or "Art today, even in its most original state, is a looped cycle of sampled and reconfigured regurgitation with little or nothing new save the prices to be established at auction"... Hmmm.
One final point concerns the books production, for some bizarre reason there are no captions (or page numbers either) to any of the photos. Surely a mistake when many of them show events, people and places that any reader would naturally ask ... "What's going on here?". Unfortunately we'll never know!
Book Description
Preference falsification, according to the economist Timur Kuran, is the act of misrepresenting one's wants under perceived social pressures. It happens frequently in everyday life, such as when we tell the host of a dinner party that we are enjoying the food when we actually find it bland. In Private Truths, Public Lies Kuran argues convincingly that the phenomenon not only is ubiquitous but has huge social and political consequences. Drawing on diverse intellectual traditions, including those rooted in economics, psychology, sociology, and political science, Kuran provides a unified theory of how preference falsification shapes collective decisions, orients structural change, sustains social stability, distorts human knowledge, and conceals political possibilities.
A common effect of preference falsification is the preservation of widely disliked structures. Another is the conferment of an aura of stability on structures vulnerable to sudden collapse. When the support of a policy, tradition, or regime is largely contrived, a minor event may activate a bandwagon that generates massive yet unanticipated change.
In distorting public opinion, preference falsification also corrupts public discourse and, hence, human knowledge. So structures held in place by preference falsification may, if the condition lasts long enough, achieve increasingly genuine acceptance. The book demonstrates how human knowledge and social structures co-evolve in complex and imperfectly predictable ways, without any guarantee of social efficiency.
Private Truths, Public Lies uses its theoretical argument to illuminate an array of puzzling social phenomena. They include the unexpected fall of communism, the paucity, until recently, of open opposition to affirmative action in the United States, and the durability of the beliefs that have sustained India's caste system.

Clear thinking about issues that many avoid thinking about.......2004-09-24
This book does a good job of analyzing the causes and effects of the differences between public and private beliefs, although it is a bit slow and long-winded.
Much of what the book says seems like it ought to be obvious, but for the most part I hadn't thought very clearly about these issues, and at very least the book persuaded me to clarify my thoughts. He makes a strong argument that some aspects of revolutions are inherently unpredictable, but I'm still trying to decide whether he succeeds in refuting alternative theories that imply factors such as sudden declines in wealth can help predict revolutions.
Fascinating Book.......2003-09-29
This is a fascinating, thought-provoking book that discusses with great skill issues like preference falsification, pluralistic ignore, social psychology, and related topics. It's a great study of why people too often don't do what they believe. The book is very easy to read and strikes a good balance between being based in research and telling a good story.
Why people lie in groups. Strikingly original theory........1997-01-29
Economists, sociologists and psychologists each base their models on underlying conceptions of man: Homo economicus is the bloodless and instantaneous calculator of costs and benefits; homo sociologicus is a product of social stimuli; and homo psychologicus is ruled by conscience.
Kuran has done something quite novel in this non-fiction book- he has melded all three theories into one, and uses it to explain why people often times mask their true opinions in groups.
This is remarkable feat given the relative lack of cross-pollination across these three disciplines. The theory is intuitively easy to grab, yet one yearns for examples which directly connect to his theory. I spent a long time trying to understand what was meant by "intrinsic utility" since it was defined in different ways in different parts of the book.
The chapters are meant to buttress his theory by tackling such issues as revolution, affirmative action, and slavery, but they are not especially well integrated into the first part of the book. In fact, they read more like stand alone articles.
The book is original and thought provoking. There is no other book like it. Those who are not trained in economics will find plenty to talk and mull over in the later chapters. But Kuran could do a better job of explaining the early section with more illustrations.
Hopefully, he will address these concerns in a later edition.
