Evocative prod to the creative muse - The English Patient.......2007-06-05
There are multiple creative intelligences: poetic, literary, musical, sculptural, visual, kinesthetic, aromatic. For me, Gwen Diehn's 128 color photo pages captured the need to communicate feelings onto two dimensional space, quietly reflecting complicated passions. More than a how-to, she inspires one to move beyond predetermined materials (buying packaged premade novelties, rubber stamps, ribbons, alphabets, etc) to explore one's own potential for introducing ingenuity to the calligraphed, water colored, decoupaged, encrusted, cut and folded page. Each person's uniqueness cannot be fully celebrated in materials designed by someone else, and Ms. Diehn encourages the reader to take the risk of discovering their own visual voice, and add to the history of visual journals like Herodotus' volume in The English Patient. Take a chance, try something new, you may discover your potential for bliss. Highly recommended read.
The Aesthetic Page.......2007-05-24
I came to THE DECORATED PAGE as a text-centric journal-keeper who rarely added anything else, and that would be nothing much more than gluing in a comic strip, artifact or article relative to the content of an entry. I was leery of a book with this title: what mattered was the text, so why decorate extraneously for decoration sake? Then I read what Gwen Diehn had to say (and show) and I immediately went out and bought a small inexpensive watercolor set, water color pencils and a pack of cheap brushes. Diehn offers general how-to information about various techniques and tools and her book is richly illustrated with photographs of a variety of journals. This is a fine companion volume to the author's other book, THE DECORATED JOURNAL. Both are good for beginner or more advanced journal keepers and artists.
What Diehn has to say is, other media can augment the meaning of the text with mood, highlighting and/or explicit illustration. She recounts her own revelation while keeping a scientific nature observation journal for a college course, and it was that story that woke me up. I'm not breaking my allegiance to text, and I am not decorating for the sake of decorating, but when I record the time of sunrise, for instance, I first lay some streaks of color that record the visual impact of it and write atop the streaks, and when I include a bulleted list or a tide chart, I set it off on a color block. It's a start and I thank Diehn for the encouragement.
Inspired Eyecandy.......2007-02-24
The examples shown are fantastic. Great ideas! I wish that I only had the time to execute a journal such as these.
bought it for a friend.......2007-02-20
I love this book - I bought a second copy for an artist friend - the examples are wonderful and creative, and it also contains some step by step projects, but not so many that this is a "do it my way" book.
Great entree into the world of journaling and papercrafts.......2006-02-21
I've always kept a written journal, but never thought of being creative with them until I saw this book on display at a bookstore. I've sinced thumbed through many other similar books (including Perrella's) and Deihn's are more instructive and interesting. I bought this book before I discovered her other one (specifically for Journaling); I'd recommend the latter if you don't do scrapbooks.
She covers dry and wet processes, cutouts, copier transfers, design layout suggestions, altering book coverers, watercolor/gouache/stamping, and more. There's lots of examples for inspiration. This book is pretty complete.

Not normally my thing, but great techniques.......2007-09-16
I've been looking to break out of my traditional scrapbooking rut, but often feel the "altered look" is a bit too much. And at first, based on the cover, I almost passed this book by. I'm glad I didn't. This book is filled with awesome ideas, great pictures and detailed instructions. A combination most books lack these days. I've looked it over several times and still see new things. I'm inspired so much, that I plan to make all my christmas gifts this year. Highly recommend this book!
Another Awesome Technique Book..........2007-07-24
How many times have you purchased a book on Amazon and regret that you weren't able to look through it before buying it? It has happened to me more times than I care to admit, but this book by Carol Wingert and Tena Sprenger is a pleasant surprise. The techniques are fun and varied. The instructions are clear, concise and very easy to implement. I was really surprised at all the fun things you can do with everyday products!
Enjoy,
Cris Cunningham
WORTH EVERY PENNY.......2007-06-30
Like many other Amazon buyers, there are occasions when I purchase a book and wish I'd been able to see it before pressing the Buy Now button. Although sometimes it's the overall quality of the publication, it is more usually because the content doesn't live up to the cover. (And Amazon does often require us to judge a book by its cover)
One this occasion, the beautiful cover doesn't begin to do justice to the fabulous pages inside. In fact I am so pleased with this book that I am at risk of running out of superlatives. I own dozens and dozens of craft books, but this one is sure to take pride of place.
Four things really stand out for me. (1)The range of techniques is varied and extensive (2)The "how to" section on each technique is reasuringly clear and provides both pictures and text (3)The authors provide list of supplies required to achieve each technique AND supplies required to complete the actual project example in the book (4)This publication won't overwhelm the enthusiastic novice or disappoint the experienced memory artist.
The one word of warning is that some of the supply lists are longish. So, those with more stuff than they know what to do with will get to use alot of it. Having said that, the supplies aren't exotic, horribly expensive or hard to find.
Buy and enjoy!
WOW!.......2007-05-01
Another great book from Carol and Tena! Lifelines is packed full of fabulous projects in glorious color. The techniques featured are versatile and can be adapted to any type of art project you are working on and will surely inspire you to create! The instructions are easy to follow and Carol and Tena's personalities come to life on the pages.
Wonderful..........2007-04-14
I would definately recommend this one.The projects are GREAT and very easy to recreate or incorporate into your own designs. I like that there is a technique tought from each project instead of just a how to layout type of book. I also love the different "chapters" of the book.Tena and Carol are absolutely amazing as are the other designers that contributed their work.I especially love Steph McAtee and Katherine Brooks!! WOW!!

Customer Reviews:
too complex for beginners.......2005-10-11
I'm new to scrapbooking so got this book for ideas. There were few interesting ideas but...
1) Required too many tools and supplies that I didn't have (I already have several hundred $s worth of tool and supplies).
2) Too many steps! The design process seemed too complex. It seemed like it'd take me an hour just to get the first 5 steps done, let alone the remaing 15 steps.
3) The designs weren't to my taste. I thought lot of the designs seem to "folksy" or too busy looking. I prefer more clean and "modern" look.
Overall, I found the book to be more discouraging to a new scrapbooker like me than inspiring.
Not For Everyone.......2005-09-29
I like scrapbooking but am not interested in this book. I bought based on the descriptions and reviews. Very disappointed in that most of the pages, if not all, have something too thick on them. I like my pages to lay flat and not bulk up my albums. Cute ideas for framing or displays... but a lot of the best parts don't lay flat enough for me and my scrapbook albums. Lots of techniques are shown, but many are also too time-consuming or too involved or, as other said, require too many different materials/tools (thus cost too much) for me. I want cute and quick. Precious yet balanced with my time and effort.
Scrapbook borders corners & Titles.......2005-08-14
This is a great book for scrapbooking. I have several scrapbooks, and this book is my favorite. The pages are so nicely done, and each page comes with directions, and a supply list of materials you will need to complete the project.
Worthwhile Book.......2005-01-22
This book has a bit of basic information on tools and supplies and then has a section on each season showing different borders, corners and titles for each one. The ideas are unique and instructions are given with photos on how to complete each one. I think it is a worthwhile book.
Creative & Current.......2003-11-22
I'm relatively new to scrapbooking and don't have a lot of time to devote to it, so I look for books like this one to help me get ideas and learn new things. I found this particular one to be full of pictures and instructions. It even includes ideas for alternate ways of applying certain techniques - which can help you be more creative on your own. The book is arranged by themes, offering several ideas for each topic. It covers a range of skill levels and refers to a lot of different tools - some of which I didn't know existed. The only reason I don't give a 5 is because some of the topics could use a little more instruction or assume you are using certain tools - which can be VERY expensive for someone who doesn't do this full time.
I recommend this book for anyone who wants to add polish to their pages and give them a more finished look. It worth the $$ for sure.

What a DISSAPOINTMENT DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY.......2006-12-30
I purchased this book to learn about Digital Scrapbooking not how to use PSE whatever..I was so disappointed in the book's content that I wish I could return it. If you know how to use PSE this book is almost worthless for scrapbooking. Although the title makes the book sound like a primer for digital scrapbooking nothing about the subject even kicks in until page 84 which is three quarters of the way through the book. Like i said DON'T WASTE YOUR MONEY !!
ugly designs, not much info.......2006-06-16
I did not find this book to be very helpful. One turn off is that the actual layouts in the book are very primitive - not at all as nice as the stuff you see in scrapbook mags or on sites like two peas in a bucket or the digital scrapbook place.
There is very little actual instruction on *how* to do the scrapbooking.
For Photoshop Elements 3.0 not 4.0.......2006-03-30
I ordered this book as an introduction to both Photoshop Elements and digital scrapbooking. It's just excellent. However, it's for Photoshop Elements version 3.0. I have version 4.0, so the half of the book which serves as a Photoshop Elements "how-to" did me no good. Unfortunately, I'm going to have to return it. It's a pity because this is an excellent little book.
recieved the book in good new condition.......2006-03-24
I recieved the book I ordered quickly and in good condition.
Book Title & synopsis misleading.......2006-03-23
I purchased this book thinking it would be a good primer for learning digital scrapbooking. Sadly, there are only 4 pages in the book devoted to setting up a scrapbook page & various techniques. Those 4 pages are good but not worth the purchase price. The focus of the book really is on photography and photo-editing and a lot less on scrapbooking.

Excellent for the Scrapper's reference library!.......2007-05-31
Although I have been scrapping for a few years, I found this to be a valuable resource. Don't be fooled by the title... it's not just for beginners. The format of the book is simple with what I call "idea launch pads". The book gets you started when you feel stumped!
Best Scrapbooking Techniques.......2006-11-10
I own many books on scrapbooking techniques and this is by far the best!
It is very detailed in it's explanation. A must if you are new to scrapbooking and a great addition to your techniques if you are an experienced scrapbooker.
An invaluable aide and informational resource.......2006-07-03

Great ideas.......2006-05-23
This book inspired me to finally organize my boxes and boxes of pictures. I have three kids, and all of the past 10 years of photos were in file boxes. I hadn't even put my wedding photos from 18 years ago in an album. This book helped me figure out some themes for albums and some completely new ways to embellish and enrich the pages. I even made each daughter her own scrapbook of baby pictures, complete with locks of hair, baby teeth and foot prints. They just love them.
Terrific book--Great addition to any scrapper's bookshelf.......2006-04-10
Rebecca and Jennifer have taken a lot of the stress out of learning to scrapbook. This book reads as though the two women are sitting next to you and gently guiding you along. Although I'm a seasoned scrapper, I found new ideas and new techniques I want to try. Best of all, the tone of the book was inspiring and helpful, which is exactly what a how to book should be.
Of all the many scrapbooking books I own, this is probably the most complete in terms of the areas covered. I picked up a great idea from the "Get Organized" section. The addition of computer tips was super--just enough without making it feel like you HAD to use your computer or you couldn't scrapbook. I also liked the section on mini and theme scrapbooks.
All in all, this book is a classic that deserves a place on every scrapbooker's bookshelf!

A good purchase.......2007-08-01
You could do worse with your money buying this book but I wouldn't say that it's the best on the market. The book is very reminiscent of Cathy Zielske's books - Clean & Simple, without some of the extra tips that Cathy adds to her books.
I like clean lines and non-fussy scrapbook pages, if you aren't "linear", then you probably won't enjoy this book.
Not great for scrapbooking.......2007-01-04
The title sounded good, however, as a scrapbooker this seemed more like images for commercials or magazines. I was looking for new design elements to simplify pages and yet have a great look.(Clean and crisp) However, the pages lacked warmth and not anything like traditional scrapbooking I was looking for. Perhaps too modern and bold.
Book Description
Save every one of those precious and fleeting babyhood moments in a scrapbook that will become a treasured family keepsake and a joy to look through again and again. The multitude of designs presented in these bright and lively pages are simply dazzling. If the pictures can tell the story, let them speak, in a simple yet beautiful layout: one heartwarming example has two images of a newborn alone and one with the beaming mother embracing her infant. A handwritten card with a tiny safety pin and miniature bottle attached completes the sweet effect. Or go wilder, adding buttons and ribbons, a mixture of patterns, heritage laces and trims, girly-girl adornments, and a little bit of everything, from scrabble letters to decorative charms.

Classic Scrapbooking and history.......2001-06-07
This is a curious combination of books. It is a little bit how-to, a little bit of history, and a little bit of anthropological research on scrapbookers. For me, an academic who is studying scrapbooks, I found the history parts invaluable. It is VERY difficult to find historical information on something that was not considered significant for many, many years, and thus below the notice of historians or scholars. This book is a great place to start for that. The discussions with people are excellent also--it gives information about the WHY and the WHO, so one can get a better idea about the reasons why people make scrapbooks. Unfortunately for my needs, the book is not a complete scholarly work, giving references, analysis and bibliographies. It may also not meet the needs of some others who may be expecting a lot more information about how to create a "classic" scrapbook rather than a "memory book", as the pages devoted to history and analysis take up space that could have gone to instruction. It is a good beginning, though, and a valuable reference work in my library until another one can be found.

Terrific book -- AND in color.......2000-05-29
This is a comprehensive guide to creating meaningful, elegant and sophisticated scrapbooks -- there are no die-cuts of cutesy bunnies or pastel umbrellas in here. THE definitive guide, and contrary to a previous reviewer (who must be thinking of another how-to book), there are gorgeous color plates.
Don't let the lack of page layouts fool you!.......2000-02-11
I have looked for a long time for a book that talks about incorporating items other than just photos into a scrapbook. Finally I have found one! When I first got this book I was was afraid that it wouldn't be much help since it did focus on anecdotes, and had few color illustrations, but this is both one of the most inspirational and helpful books on scrapbooking I have found. The anecdotes are more inspirational than any page layout not to mention more conducive to creativity. I am frankly sick of all the books on how to layout your photos, and scrapbooks that are really glorified photo albums, nothing like the traditional scrapbooks. I love putting photos and stickers in mine, but there are tons of books on how to do that and precious little on putting anything else in them. Another thing I liked about this book was the number of anecdotes from male scrapbookers. Scrapbooks used to be for everyone, but it seems that they are becoming a female only territory. I'm glad to know that this isn't entirely the case. That there are still men doing the more traditional scrapbooks. The only part of this book I didn't find a use for were the sections on making handmade scrapbooks, but that is only because I have no interest in doing so. I feel this is the most informative book on scrapbooking I have come across, not to mention the only one I would actually feel like reading cover to cover more than once.
Great ideas for creating your own scrapbook.......1999-11-30
I have recently purchased the book Classic Scrapbooking and have found it very helpful with good ideas to create an original beautiful scrapbook. So far I have finished one book and it looks great. I'm particularly happy since I'm not a very creative person but since the directions were clear and easy to follow, it was easy. Now I have a great looking book that I could never buy in a store. I am looking forward to trying out more of the ideas in the book and giving them as christmas presents for my family. I just hope that they cherish theirs as much as I cherish mine.

Inspiration but no step-by-step instructions.......2001-08-15
This book is great for inspiration for the experienced papercrafter. That does not mean you have to be an expert. The projects featured are unique and definately got my creative juices flowing. This book is not for beginners looking for a how-to manual for hand bookmaking; there is an assumed understanding of some basic skills that are not explained in detail here.

If you want INSPIRATION.......2001-08-03
Love this book. One of the best craft type books I ever brought. Does not show you the basics. In fact it does not give you much instruction at all (You could buy "Creating Handmade Books" by Alisa Golden, which complements this book well by teaching the stiches, bindings, etc.) "Making Memory Books" makes for a great inspiration book. One to pick up and flick though when you want new ideas. I have sticky notes all through my book with notes to my self about what I can do when I get around to the project. Its going to take me several years to get through it all.
Gorgeous photos, inspirational ideas........2001-07-03
I have never bound a book by hand and I really don't have any desire to do so. In buying this guide, you need not have any intent to create an entire book from scratch because the pictures are so beautiful that you will be more focused on creating pages to put into your existing journal or scrapbook.
I agree that the projects here are more for the advanced bookbinder, but I have found it fairly easy to adapt the ideas to my own skill level and have had satisfactory results. I am continually amazed by the level of creativity in both this book and "Creating Journals By Hand." They both have had more influence on what goes into my pages than on the entire journal...and to me, it's the memories that really count, not what they're packaged in.
buyer beware!.......2001-06-22
While this book is attractive, and the projects beautiful and inspirational, I want to warn anyone who is looking for accurate instructions to stay away! After a brief examination, I can give several examples of incorrect or unclear directions. For instance, on page 100, step one for creating an accordion book reads "First, cut a 5 1/2" x 4" (14 cm x 10 cm) strip of paper and fold it accordion style." An accordion book made according to these instructions would look like one of those paper fans you used to make as a child, not what is pictured in the book! What the author meant was cut a strip of paper that is 5 1/2" x (4" x the number of pages you want). Urrrrgggh! Or how about on page 52 when the author tries to explain the creation of signatures: "Note that the spines for the first and last signature should be cut differently, with a full page on the outside of each to be used for a title sheet at the beginning or for a decorative page at the end." Huh? Cut differently how? Is she really talking about endsheets? And what does that have to do with the spines? Anyway, inspirational: yes; accurate: no way!!!
