In their excellent (and hefty) resource guide, The Baby Book, attachment parenting specialists William Sears and Martha Sears have provided new parents with their approach to every aspect of baby care basics, from newborns to toddlers. Attachment parenting is a gentle, reasonable approach to parenting that stresses bonding with your baby, responding to her cues, breastfeeding, "wearing" your baby, and sharing sleep with your child. For those parents who worry about negative effects of this attention, the Sears say, "Spoiling is what happens when you leave something (or some person) alone on the shelf--it spoils."

5 out of 5 stars Every expectant Mom needs this book!.......2007-10-03

Anyone that is excecting should have this book in their collection. I read every page before my daughter was born (when I actually had time) and referred to it many times in her first year. It has good sound advice and isn't too weird. I like the excerpts of his wife detailing actual situations they encountered while raising their children. It is easy to find information and is, in my opinion, one of the best books on the market for baby's first year. Would recommend highly!

5 out of 5 stars Baby Bible!.......2007-10-01

This is my official shower gift for new moms. I used this on at least a weekly basis when my baby was first born (sometimes at 3am!). It totally saved my life that year and answered SO many questions. I don't totally agree with every single thing that Sears says, but like with anything you take what you need. This has a lot of good information and comforted me when I wanted to just freak out about something (like green poo - totally normal).

5 out of 5 stars A great resource for "attachment parenting"-friendly parents.......2007-09-29

This was one of the most useful "baby" books in my extensive collection - I referred to it over and over again for a wide range of issues, from fevers to sleep problems. Each time I opened it I would find helpful, child-friendly information from a source that seemed warm and sympathetic towards me and my parenting challenges. I was reluctant to pass this book on to my sister when she had a baby, as I did most other books of this type, since I was still finding it useful in toddler-hood; fortunately, she was given a copy by someone else so I didn't need to part with it. "The Baby Book" became her most-referenced book as well.

That said, I can see how some people would be put off by this book. It definitely describes mother-oriented parenting in its promotion of breastfeeding (which my husband has, to his great happiness, not been able to attempt). My husband is the main caregiver in our family (stay-at-home dad) and I'm a work-at-home mom, and neither of us felt judged by any of the authors' books - but we're both pretty thick-skinned towards gender-role judgments. And after having our daughter it was clear that there was just no substitute for Mom sometimes - her behavior was consistent with the gender bias in the book. Whether that was because her two favorite things were located on my chest or for some subtler gender-based reason, I couldn't say. But sometimes the best thing that my husband could do for her was to bring her to me. Fortunately, he was fine with that.

The book did not seem as judgmental to me as it did to some other reviewers. Though the authors' preferences for co-sleeping are clear, they state that the best place for a baby to sleep is wherever the whole family gets the best night's sleep and describe various options. The same is true for breastfeeding - they express their (well substantiated) opinion that breastfeeding babies is optimal, but they do address how to bottle feed as well in the section "Bottlefeeding with Safety and Love." The area in which the book was probably most judgmental was on the subject of sleep training - the authors obviously consider cry-it-out methods to often be an insensitive way to treat a child and likely to cause parents to fail to respond to important needs of their baby. Even so, they address how to make sleep-training more responsive to the needs of the baby and say "We are not saying that the cry-it-out approach is always wrong, doesn't work, and you should never use it. Instead, we wish you to be careful about jumping right into this method before you deeply understand its ramifications and have carefully considered less drastic alternatives."

All-in-all this is an exceptionally useful book and one that I recommend to most new parents.

2 out of 5 stars Some good basics, with a helping of guilt.......2007-09-25

This book has some great stuff in it- the basics of how to carry a baby in a sling, how to breastfeed, growth charts, tips on gentle discipline- but in general, the advice segments of this book are judgmental, not well-balanced, and unreferenced. Sears & Sears make you feel guilty for trying any approach other than the "Attachment Parenting" style they espouse.

I found Sears & Sears to be particularly unhelpful when it came to infant sleep. Their suggestions for how to get a baby to sleep longer at night, such as using all-cotton sleepwear and co-sleeping, are probably great for easy babies with extremely mellow temperaments. But what happens if your baby does not respond to quick fixes? Sears & Sears only suggest an increased level of responsiveness, and insinuate that resorting to any "sleep training" method risk doing permanent psychological damage to their child, something which is not true, and quite unfair to a desperately sleep-deprived parent.

1 out of 5 stars DO NOT BUY OR READ, TELL OTHER MOMS.......2007-09-23

This book is absolutely ridiculous from a nutrition stand point. If you don't want your baby to develop obesity and allergies do not follow this book. I received this as a gift and am just appalled at some of the advice. It says to give babies juice, start with fruit rather than just vegetables, and start dairy at 9-12 mo. rather than after 12 months. I'm no doctor but I've worked with children for 10 years, have one of my own, and studied nutrition and childhood development in college. From my experience this advice could lead to serious consequences, that will form your children's taste and tolerance for the rest of their lives.

5 out of 5 stars Great material to review and pass the exam.......2007-05-13

Expanding on previous editions, the latest version of NPR provides a clear and concise format with which to study from in order to prepare and successfully pass the NPR exam. The included CD-ROM is a computer version of the text reading material. It did, however, have the appropriate videos which would assist any RN needing a quick review of various situations presented in real-time format. The book is highly recommended to any health-care professional needing information for the first time or any time usage for neonatal care.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to follow and understand for the NRP novice.......2005-12-14

Studying for my renewal for NRP proved to be as easy as the initial class with the cd-rom. I have extremely limited contact with this pt. population, but I am able to easily recall the information attained through this text/multimedia. Although nothing substitutes actual "hands-on," instruction or experience, this will provide a valuable asset for the ACLS/PALS impaired.

3 out of 5 stars has its ups and downs.......2004-03-10

The book has absolutely everything you need to know word-for-word to get certified in NALS. It comes from more of a nursing perspective so little details like how to operate the jackson-reiss and anatomy of the airway will be extremely redunant for respiratory therapists.

I found the CD-ROM included was very buggy in my computer. While it was helpful to see everything happening at once, the videos' content should have been more closely watched, since during a chapter about mechanical ventilation saying bag at around a rate of 40, will clearly show the person at the head ventilating at a rate of closer to 70 or 80.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and Improved Version.......2001-09-25

Text flows well and I was able to ace the course. Great reference to keep in your locker at work for review, too

5 out of 5 stars Neonatal Resuscitation Made Easy.......2000-12-17

NRP has been streamlined to enhance the readers learning and retention of the resuscitation guidelines. This book is easy reading...cover to cover! Key learning points are emphasized throughout the book. Each chapter is carefully laid out with case studies to reinforce the content covered. The reader builds on the foundation of the previous chapter(s) thus progressing one from a basic to complex resuscitation scenario. Comprehension questions are found through various points of each chapter with a test at the end of each chapter. The book is excellent not to mention the CD-ROM as an added bonus. Even if you are due to renew your NRP under the old guidelines(through June 2001) this book will provide you with all the information you need to know. Thanks Marla!

5 out of 5 stars I could kiss her!.......2007-09-30

This book really helped us get our lives back into order after our baby was born. It gave us a bunch of different ideas to try as opposed to one dogma that we had to fit our family into. Thanks, Elizabeth!

4 out of 5 stars A gentle, more sensitive and flexible Gina Ford approach.......2007-09-11

I followed Gina Ford's Contented Baby book The New Contented Little Baby Book schedule with our first child, but years later had some trouble letting our second child cry it out like we had done with our first since her cries seemed so much more urgent and needy. I have read through Elizabeth Pantley's no-cry sleep solution and 90% of the advice and creation of schedules (however flexible) is the same as in Gina Ford's books. No matter what the title says, there still is a bit of crying involved, but it is more focused on learning to tell the difference between different cries and leaving a child who is crying alone if it is part of her normal settling back down. All very similar to gina ford's information yet her books always get labelled as cruel (unfairly).

I really like the compassionate tone of this book and the practical manner she lays out the plan and strategies for getting your kids to sleep through the night no matter what bad habits they have become accustomed to. I think the fact that she is a mother of 4 that came by these techniques through trial and error with her own kids and then took on a trial team of mothers across the globe to try out her techniques gives the book a lot of validity and integrity.

I would highly recommend it to any mother or father struggling with a child's sleep difficulties, it will make life easier for all of you. I am not giving it 5 stars because of all the hype and advertising that describe this as a radically new approach that has never been suggested before, when in fact it is a very familiar, albeit successful approach, that has been injected with a more sympathic voice.

1 out of 5 stars Didn't work for us..............2007-09-10

I tried this method for over two months with my then 11 month old son. We went exactly by the book and it didn't work at all. We didn't make ANY progress in the 2.5 months we attempted this method. Although it seems like a great approach for those who practice attachment parenting, such as I do; but as a full time nursing student and single mom~ I needed any extra minute I had to study. I attempted this method over my summer break, and like I previously stated, it didn't work for us, even though I did exactly as the book said. Good luck!

3 out of 5 stars Useful, no new science.......2007-09-06

I bought this book because I thought my situation was desperate!!! By reeading this book I found out that I was much better of than most people, and in a much better situation than the examples she writes about in this book.

My starting situation was two (three rarely) awakenings every 3-4 hours, witch is completely normal and has been like that scince my baby was born. Now with 6 months I wanted a change and how I was determined not to let my baby cry it out I bought this book.

While I was reading this book I found out that I had been doing most of her ideas scince my baby was born!!! not because I read them, but because I had thought of them on my own.....(routine, music, bath, regular naps, early bedtime...) I even had given him a soft cloth to snuggle with that had my smell.....The pantley gentle pull off...I had been doing that too!!!!

So, my conclusion is that with common sense, great results can happen because now my baby is down to 1 awakening (totally managable)and sleeps sometimes 8 hours straight.

I think the book is educational if you don't know anything about babies or if you lack common sense. It is well written and easy to read. I would recommed for first time moms.

5 out of 5 stars FINALLY - A METHOD THAT WORKS!!.......2007-08-27

What a fantastic book this is! I have read 2 other baby sleep books but this is the one. Many books just talk about theories and vague ideas. Elizabeth Pantley actually gives you practical advice that you can use and alter to your own needs! I was about at my wits end with our 15 month old son when I came across the NO CRY METHOD. I was so worn down and was always worrying about how long it would take to put him down at night. Elizabeth gives some wonderful advice on how to get through that while working through the METHOD. She gives a step by step process that you can try for getting your baby to sleep on his/her own and sleeping through the night. I even emailed Elizabeth and kindly returned my email with more wonderful advice or insight. My son isn't a perfect sleeper yet, but he's close! Thanks Elizabeth.

I'm afraid of what life would be like without this book! My nephew was quiet at first but then woke up after a week or two and became very fussy. It's AMAZING how the techniques in the book calm him so quickly, it's like he's in a trance. You never expect to have a fussy baby but many parents do and this book will give you some great tips on how to make your baby feel safe & happy. Every new parent should read this book (Preferably before the baby is born b/c there won't be much time for reading after, especially if baby becomes fussy. You'll want to be prepared ahead of time)!

5 out of 5 stars great book for OB nursing class.......2005-05-11

I used this book last semester for OB nursing class, it helped me understand basic concepts and put together nursing care plan greatly. It's very concise and well written.

5 out of 5 stars Great Resource.......2000-07-13

The new edition of the AWHONN Core Curriculum for Maternal Newborn Nursing is excellent. It allows the staff on the units to have the latest information on clinical practice, guidelines for care, and patient education. The only thing more would be to have an appendix of common OB/Newborn procedures and protocols/guidelines and much of the annual hospital activities revolving around the hospital manuals could be greatly eased. We have tabbed the Clinical Practice segments for easy reference on the units.

4 out of 5 stars Very good but with no pictures.......2000-05-01

The unique "no" of this book is no having pictures. But it's very easy to read and schematic. I use it to prepare my nursing classes and is one of my favorites.

The title, Baby Owner's Manual, suggests the promise and the problem of this cheeky and comprehensive guide written by a pediatrician and his son. First-time parents who are not offended by the observation that "babies, unlike other appliances, lack instruction manuals," will find a rich resource of facts and advice. The book is divided into seven categories of "operating instructions" including home installation, feeding and power supply, sleep mode, maintenance, development, and safety. Complete with witty schematic drawings and charts, the authors answer hundreds of questions about breastfeeding, bed, bath, and beyond. While most manuals focus on tender loving care, the authors chose to focus on baby as technology. The result is a highly useful--almost too cool--reference book. Because every parent knows that babies are messier and more rewarding than this approach imagines. --Barbara Mackoff

5 out of 5 stars Great Shower Gift .......2007-03-08

I've given this book as a gift for the last few baby showers I've gone to. My one friend told me that they used this book more than any other during the first few months. It's a helpful book, small so it can travel around easily. Plus it's funny to read through it as if your baby is a car. Great for the Dad since it's written in terms they are used to.
At first when I bought it I thought, oh what a great gag gift. I'm glad it turned out to be helpful to the parents as well.

5 out of 5 stars Great little hand book!.......2007-02-08

As a first time mom who doesn't like to read pages and pages of information, I found this book to be a great quick-reference, packed with a wealth of information... from breastfeeding positions to things you'll need for the arrival of your baby (there are lots of diagrams). I love the book so much, I have bought copies for friends of mine who are also expecting.
At first appearance, the book seems like a joke on having a baby. Really, it's just a smart, refreshing way of presenting the information. Highly recommended!

4 out of 5 stars Tongue-in-cheek book for the technically oriented.......2007-01-13

Some people find babies to be like aliens. Everyone knows they are people, but since they are infants ("infans" from the Latin for "without language/speechless"), they can't tell you what's exactly wrong. Some people are technically oriented like my husband and are great troubleshooters -- this book is for them.

I'm giving this book only four stars because I think Be Prepared (a book for new dads) is a more entertaining and more informative read, and deserves a five-star rating.

5 out of 5 stars Great for Dads- Reads like an old car manual.......2007-01-07

This was given to my husband (who is an engineer) and he loves it. Since receiving it we have given it to friends who are expecting and they like it too.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and informative.......2007-01-05

I've bought this book for the last three friends of mine that have had babies and they all love it. It looks like a joke, sort of like a car or appliance manual, but it actually has a tremendous amount of practical advice for new parents. I even have another friend that's put her request in for the same thing when she gets pregnant.

5 out of 5 stars Book is being reprinted.......2007-08-23

I give this book to every new mother I know, it's that good. However, the used book prices are insane. I emailed the author in the Netherlands and he said they are in negotiation with a new publisher to reprint the book.
There is no reason to pay $80.00 - $175.00 for a $20.00 paperback.
People all over the world have written to him asking to have it reprinted and he's very anxious to do so.

5 out of 5 stars There's a reason for the change in behavior!.......2007-07-20

I wish someone had told me that babies have a fussy phase around 5-6 weeks. I got this book when my son was about 8 weeks old and it was comforting to know that his seemingly out of the blue crying was very normal. For each "leap" the book tells you fussy signs to look for, things your baby may be doing, and things you can do to help them flourish. The last week or so, my son has been craving more attention, having trouble settling down before sleeping, and turning away at times when being fed. I picked up the book again and sure enough, we have hit the next wonder week at 19 weeks and all of these things were listed under fussy signs. It's nice to have an idea of when these weeks are, instead of wondering why things have changed so much!

5 out of 5 stars Great insight into baby's brain development.......2007-04-10

I really wish I'd had this book from the beginning! It's a fascinating insight into what is going on inside your baby's head.

It's easy when your baby is fed, slept, cuddled and played with to become a little frustrated if he's still uncharacteristically fussy. It really helps to be able to anticipate a fussy phase -- I actually prefer fussy "time frame," since our little guy just seems to have a few more off days and isn't really fussy all the time. When he's unusually fussy in that time frame, instead of just becoming frustrated and giving myself a hard time that I'm not meeting his needs, I can look for specific new things he is learning.

I agree with other reviewers that just knowing what is going on is incredibly helpful. Also, knowing that it will end soon and that this fussiness is your baby's way of coping with increased mental capacity and awareness really gives me a great deal of perspective. Actually, knowing it will end soon is probably the most helpful :)

I also like that the authors emphasize that your child will *not* do all the new things listed, but to pay attention to what (s)he is interested in for clues to the emerging personality. I have enjoyed their suggestions for games to play to help your child learn to use their new mental capabilities.

I have acquired a large library related to child/infant care and this is the best book I have invested in thus far. No other book has had such practical information that really contributed to lowering my stress level as a first-time parent.

5 out of 5 stars Wish I'd had this book with my first baby..........2007-02-13

This is such a helpful book. It explains all of the major developmental stages, and helps you understand what your infant might be going through. It seemed whenever my son would start getting fussy or sleeping poorly, I'd look in this book and coordinate it with a different developmental milestone. I recommend this book to any new parents. Sometimes realizing what's happening, makes it easier to deal with.

5 out of 5 stars If you have a baby, you need this book........2007-01-23

I don't think I've ever bothered to do a review here before, but this book made me take the time to do it. I got this book when my daughter was a few months old and I recommend it to all parents. Each chapter discusses a "fussy phase" and explains the developmental leap that accompanies it. The book offers suggestions of how to handle it, how to cope when things get frustrating, what toys are especially useful during the phase, what games to play with your child at that time.

I love the way it's organized. It's very readable. Without fail, every time my little girl was acting...not herself...I would open up the book and sure enough, we were right in the middle of a great developmental leap. I feel like this book helped me understand my daughter better, and be a better parent. I WISH they would write a book for the second year as well.

5 out of 5 stars What an experienced Neonatal Nurse Practitioner has to say..........2007-08-13

This is the book you must have if going into neonatology or neonatal nursing. This is the gold standard and the most up to date information in the field. I have had the privilege of working with the authors and many of the contributors for years now, and I continue to respect and admire their work and knowledge. It's heavy and worth every ounce!

5 out of 5 stars Very accessible.......2006-09-15

I'm an average everyday bean counter with no background or interest in medicine. I just bought this book because my kid decided to come out at 28 weeks, and let's be honest: Doctor's are too afraid of lawsuits to tell the rest of us lay people all the goods. However this book is great and very accessible for the average high school graduate, such as myself, to understand what's going on. Granted, wikipedia is also nice because doctor's like to use words like "emesis" when "vomiting" will do, however the concepts are presented very clearly. I recommend it to any unfortunate soul who's kid is in the NICU and wants to know what's going on. Of course, if we can understand it, I'm not sure how helpful this book is to real doctors who do this for a living.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Book.......2006-03-10

It is difficult to read, no doubt about that. However, it has a edge of giving the reader the required concept. Also it is unanimously known that the neonatology board questions contain a lot of questions, foundation of which are laid on the themes , well described in this book.
Definitely recommneded for any body really serious in neonatology. The latest chapter of bioethics and legal medicine is worth mentioning , as it has not been covered in any other neonatology text book.

4 out of 5 stars GREAT BOOK.......2007-09-02

I PURCHASED IT USED AND LOVED IT. I WILL BE SELLING IT BACK. I LOVE HOW EVERYTHING WAS DIVIDED IN IT INTO SECTIONS. WE FOUND OUT BABY GIRL'S NAME IN IT :o)

3 out of 5 stars Incorrect meanings/classifications for ethnic names.......2007-07-29

First, let me state the obvious: You will find many, many names in this book. Besides American and Christian names the book lists many ethnic names: African, Indian, Arabic, Chinese, Irish, Italian, etc.
I can't comment on the quality and accuracy of all the names, but being East Indian I do have a fair bit of knowledge regarding Indian names.
The problems with this book:
1. Many of the name meanings are wildly inaccurate.
2. Some boys names were incorrectly classified as a girls name and vice-versa.
3. Some Arabic names were incorrectly classified as Indian.
4. Quality: many Indian names listed in this book are archaic and woefully outdated-- the sort of name that conjures up images of someone in their 80s. The American equivalent would be names like Ebenezer or Nimrod. Those names were popular at some point in the 1880s, but how many parents would give that name to their child today =)
The bottom line: there are a wide variety of names to be found here, but if you're going to go with a name you are unfamiliar with be sure to check alternate sources for meanings, source attribution and gender-appropriateness.

4 out of 5 stars A lot of names to look through!.......2007-01-10

I thought the book was great and had lots of interesting name ideas. It organzied names alphabetically but also in like-sounding names, names that were pairs, famous people's names, etc. The only thing I did not like was that the pronounciations were not provided. Other than that I thought the book had great ideas, was very organized, and I plan on passing it on to my pregnant friends.

4 out of 5 stars Tons of names.......2007-01-10

As the title suggests, there are a ton of names in this book. I would have appreciated some more depth to at least a portion of the names. However, I really liked the sheer number of names. The names in this book went beyond the run-of-the-mill, most popular names. Some of the names are unrealistic and laughable. Overall, a good book to use as a starting point.

4 out of 5 stars A lot of names..........2007-01-03

Although this book does have the huge number of names that it promises, many of them are just numerous spellings of the same name. I also did notice that the book contains lots of exotic names, and not as much of a focus on traditional names. So if you're looking for a name specific to your heritage (like you're parents are from Vietnam and you want a Vietnamese name), this is a great book. But if you're looking for something a little more mainstream, you may want to go with something else. The one thing that really made me a little mad, though, was that they misspelled a country's name (just so happened to be the one that my baby's father is from, so I noticed). I don't have the book with me right now, but I think they put Tai rather than Thai (as in Thailand)!!! Get an EDITOR!!!
