In 1988, Rabbi Joseph Telushkin undertook a mission to heal "Jewish ignorance," an affliction whose symptoms include the ability to name the three components of the Trinity, coupled with an inability to explain mitzvah. Telushkin's contribution to the cure is his wide-ranging, entertaining Jewish Literacy. First published in 1991, Jewish Literacy contains almost 350 entries on subjects ranging from the Ten Commandments to The Protocols of the Elders of Zion. Entries are numbered (for easy, encyclopedia-style reference) and organized topically (to smooth the experience of reading each page straight through). And the revised edition contains several new entries (including articles about the assassination of Yitzhak Rabin and the vice-presidential nomination of Joseph Lieberman) as well as numerous corrections, enlargements, and updates. One might expect Rabbi Telushkin's project of inspiring Jewish literacy to be overly earnest, but the author's understated wit adds considerable levity to most entries. The entry on "Sodom and Gomorrah," for instance, ends this way: "A number of years ago, some Israeli promoters of tourism suggested transforming the modern city of Sodom into a tourist haven with casinos, nightclubs, and even strip shows. The Chief Rabbinate in Israel sharply demurred, warning that there was nothing to prevent God from destroying the city a second time. The plan was dropped." --Michael Joseph Gross
Book Description
How much do you know about Judaism?
- How did the Ten Lost Tribes become lost ?
- Are circumcisions performed on the Sabbath ?
- Which country first granted Jews equal rights ?
- When was polygamy outlawed for Jews ?
- Why does Jewish law compare gossiping to murder ?
You'll find the answers to these questions -- and much more -- in this insightful and comprehensive guide. Written by esteemed rabbi and bestselling author Joseph Telushkin, Jewish Literacy has become one of the most respected and widely used reference books on Jewish life, culture, religion, and tradition. Now revised and updated, this fascinating volume distills a vast body of scholarship into 348 short, readable chapters, making the rich and complex history of Judaism accessible to any reader.
Organized by subject, the book's fifteen sections include:
History and Contemporary Life
From the biblical and Talmudic periods through the Spanish Inquisition to modern times, with special sections on the Holocaust, Israel, and American-Jewish life.
Beliefs, Ethics, and Rituals
From monotheism to Judaism's views on the afterlife, "chosenness," and human relations with God; ethical concerns ranging from the proper treatment of animals to the real meaning of "an eye for an eye"; along with explanations of the major prayers and synagogue practices.
Jewish Holidays and Life Cycle
The origins and distinctive customs of each holiday, and the rites sanctifying every major life event from circumcision and baby naming to burial and mourning.
Answers to the questions from the front flap:
- They were dispersed when the Kingdom of Israel was destroyed by the Assyrians in 722 B.C.E. (see Chapter 45).
- The United States (see Chapter 203).
- Around 1000 C.E., when it was proscribed by Rabbi Gershom; however, most Sephardic Jews did not accept the ban (see Chapter 95).
- Because gossip, like murder, can do irrevocable damage (see Chapter 271).

Informative but some "don't go there" moments.......2007-09-25
In general, this was a good book. It is well-written, informative and intelligent. My only criticism is that the Rabbi's statements on Christianity and Islam were not always accurate of fair. (In fairness, these misinterpretations often come from the followers of the religions themselves.) If you keep these biases in mind this is a wonderful book.
Wonderful.......2007-09-24
This book is terrific. Absolutely terrific. Rabbi Telushkin is simply an incredible writer. This book should be read by everyone who is Jewish as well as by everyone who is interested in world religions.
God vs. G-d,etc. by a Rabbi who is a Rabbi(not a "rabbi").......2007-09-11
I remember when I first started seeing God spelled G-d,never having a clue what the reason was-and bumbling my way to some type of mystical bs answer that pissed me off;I don't remember how long my "explanation" predated this book, but I was pissed off until I finally saw the real answer:(p.56-57)"The Third Commandment also has not fared well in English:Lo tissa et shem Ha-Shem Eloheikha la-shav is usually translated as "You shall not take the Lord your God's name in vain."Many people think that this means that you have to write God as G-D,or that it is blasphemous to say words such as "goddamn".Even if these assumptions are correct,it's still hard to figure out what makes this offense so heinous that it's included in the document that forbids murdering, stealing, idolatry, and adultery. However, the Hebrew,Lo tissa, literally means "You shall not carry(God's name in vain);in other words, don't use God as your justification in selfish causes. The Third Commandment is the only one concerning which God says,"for the Lord God will not forgive him who carries His name in vain"(Exodus 20:6-7).The reason now seems to be clear. When a person commits an evil act,he discredits himself. But when a religious person commits an evil act in the name of God,he or she discredits God as well. And since God relies on religious people to bring knowledge of Him into the world,he pronounces the sin unpardonable."Amen.
One of the worst books I have ever read........2007-08-07
Before I express the criticism from my title I should begin by saying that this book is well written and very informative. It contains a lot of really interesting information about Judaism and were it not for the profound biases and ignorance of its author I might even rank it among one of the better books I have read recently.
In order to understand why I so thoroughly dislike this book it might actually help to briefly discuss another book that really has nothing to do with this one. A few years ago I read Bertrand Russell's History of Western Philosophy - another good book with a very similar abysmal nature. My issue with Russell is his utter dismissal of any other view point from his own. Thus Nietzsche is dismissed after only a page. Schopenhauer is rendered inconsequential while fundamental thinkers such as Kirkegaard and Wittgenstein are ignored. Meanwhile trivial thinks such as Dewey are praised because they agree with Russell's own positions. So while the book is well written, the general sense of history and context is brilliant, unless you already know something about philosophy, and can escape the many pitfalls, Russell's text is one to be avoided. And if you do know something it ends up seeming somewhat pathetic.
I have pretty much the same critique of Jewish Literacy by Telushkin. Yes this is a well written book. Yes there is a lot that is good here. A reader who wants to know a little something about Judaism and is willing to consult it more like a dictionary than a reading it cover to cover (like I did) might get some value from owning this book. If you want to occasionally look up different holiday's or get some brief illumination regarding Torah passages or even know a little something more about thinkers like Maimonides or Rabbi Feinstein this is a good introductory source.
What you don't want to do is think of this as having any value when it comes to that can be in any way impartial. Telushkin is an Orthodox Rabbi, so I guess I can forgive some of his opinions in much the same way I can forgive say... Pat Robertson some of his ignorant and backwards positions simply by say well... he is a Southern Baptist he probably doesn't know better.
As an example upon finishing this I was shocked and dismayed to discover that I am an Anti-Semite. I admit to not being Jewish. I can't help that my father's father was Jewish but that is matrilineally irrelevant. But felt that my admiration of so many Jewish writers, thinkers, artists and friends that I actually took the time to well... anee m'daber ktzat eevreet. But it turns out that according to Telushkin that anybody who has even the smallest criticism of Israel is Anti-Zionist and because of this also an Anti-Semite struck me as well... unkind. Or said another way, if disapproving of Israeli missiles killing unarmed Lebanese civilians, or disliking the racist and apartheid policies directed against the Palestinian population makes me an Anti-Semite the so be it; I guess I am one.
Some of his positions such as the position that only Orthodox Jews are really Jews, while Reform Jews and Conservative Jews aren't, seem to be just part of the overall position of Orthodoxy and can probably be ignored in pretty much the same way that say Ann Coulter's position that Democrats and Liberals are un-American are equally as bigoted and unfounded.
In fact if it makes my dislike of this book any easier to understand, just imagine a history of America written by an right-wing republican, then transfer the narrative into a history of Judaism. The same points would be covered 1) The troubled early years and the politically safe interpretation 2) The historical justifications for contemporary amorality 3) The veiled denouncing of political opponents 4) One hell of a lot of revisionism and glossing over.
So yes. I did not like this book. It was at times a fun read. There were a couple of funny anecdotes that I told some of my friends. I did learn a fair bit that I didn't know. The book was well written and kept my interest enough so that it only took me three days to finish reading, like I said cover to cover. But I would never recommend it to anyone. And to the people who do read it, I say be careful, read between the lines because while the author seems reasonable he really is not.
I HIGHLY recommend this book.......2007-06-04
What can I say about Rabbi Joseph Telushkin, shlita, except that he is a true talmid chacham (scholar). Every book of his that I've read was excellent, and this one is no different. It's a fantastic introduction to MANY things Jewish. Go out and buy one (or more) today. Makes a great Bar Mitzvah gift !!

Great Help!!.......2007-03-09
Has Great ideas on how to combat JW bible misconceptions. I liked the scripture references, that leave no doubt on how badly the Watchtower has twisted scripture to their own destruction. Invaluable for that next knock on your door!!
BRAVO! ENCORE!.......2006-12-12
I see from the various reviews that Jehovah's Witnesses are not pleased with this book! Rest assured that is an EXCELLENT sign! Since the Watchtower Bible and Tract Society opposes this book, that means it's a worthwhile read. How so? Their opposition GUARANTEES this book contains information the Witnesses don't wish you to know about. I'm a former Jehovah's Witness and I was taught 'Theocratic Warfare' when I was in the Watchtower Cult. This refers to the practice of 'lying for the truth,' of saying whatever you have to say, even lying through your teeth to protect the public image and teachings of the Watchtower Society. Read I WAS A TEENAGE JEHOVAH'S WITNESS and JEHOVAH UNMASKED for two of the wildest rides ever!
Why can't we all just get along?.......2006-12-01
Everyone is searching for a little peace in their life. Religion should bring a person inner peace, but instead it is a divisive force, causing stress and friction. I was a Witness for 27 years, pioneering and raising my children as witnesses. My husband served as an elder for many years. I think we helped a lot of people find hope in times of need. Today, although no longer witnesses, my family and I are not bitter or resentful. Certainly not in the mood to write a book discouraging witnesses. JWs offer people without hope a way out of their problems, some structure to their chaotic lives, help overcoming addictions, literacy and and a practical guide to daily living. -All good things really. People in the US have the freedom to choose their own way of worship. May all people be peaceful and free and may the way we live add to the peace and freedom in the world. I encourage all to use their time constructively, positively encouraging others and avoiding tearing each other down.
Wishing all happiness in a world full of peace.
Conversation with a JW.......2006-11-16
If you want to have a serious conversation with one who is a Jehovah's Witness, and not have them talking at you without you having any input to the conversation, then you will be better prepared after you read this book.
Great.......2006-11-07
JW are a sad bunch. the have their own bible to fit their beliefs.

innocuous.......2007-08-26
A nice little book full of simple, innocuous sayings displaying a keen grasp of the obvious. But by and large, I didn't find anything that really grabbed me, anything that made me think "Wow!" I did find one or two exceptions to this. Rogers writes:
"Sometimes, though, I wonder if we confuse strength with other words - like aggression, and even violence."
I wonder what Mister Rogers would have made of politicians defining "strength" as "support for war."
he should've been president.......2007-08-08
this ought to be a required textbook in all the schools and colleges in the world.it is that good without a doubt.
Great Book.......2007-05-14
Great book to have on the coffee table. Just a quick read with great thoughts.
Don't just read it; study it!.......2007-04-19
When I sat down with this book I intended to give it a quick read and set it aside. And then I read it a second time and TOOK NOTES because I found so many pieces and parts of the book inspiring and eye-opening and comforting.
For instance, Mr. Rogers says that when he was a boy and there were tragedies in the news, his mom would tell him, "look for the helpers; look for the people who are helping others." That shifted his perspective and helped assuage some of his fears.
Another treasure is the introduction by Mrs. Rogers (Joanne) who states, "The person Fred became in his later years came out of growth and struggle. As he got older, it seemed as if the nurturing of his soul and mind became more and more important...Discipline was his very strong suit."
And in another part of the intro she states that if she were to isolate a single thing that changed Fred's life more than anything else, it was a statement made by Dr. Margaret McFarland, a mentor and teacher. "She let him know it was okay to be sensitive."
Reading that was a comfort, since most of us "sensitive souls" are repeatedly admonished to "stop being so sensitive," and yet it is that very sensitivity that should be nurtured and developed in artists and writers.
Several months ago, I made extensive notes of this book and re-read them each morning as part of my daily mediations. That's how much I loved "The World According to Mister Rogers."
It's a well-written, easy-to-read book that leaves a lasting impression.
A lovely gift.......2007-02-06
This is a gift of Mr. Rogers wonderful heart and spirit and can be a gift to any friend who needs his grounded, centering message.

Rhetoric versus Truth.......2007-08-28
This book surely touches hot buttons for those who are convinced they know Latter-Day Saint doctrine and what it means to their eternal salvation. This book is intended as a work of Anti-Mormon literature. My father taught me that there are basically three kinds of people in the world: Those who don't care about other people, Those who try to make themselves look better by making others look good, and lastly, those who try to make themselves look better by making others look bad. This book has led me to believe that Ron Rhodes is one of the latter.
It is interesting to see how someone who is so ingrained in being right can miss the opportunity to simply let the "truth" stand for itself. Instead of offering small tidbits of half truths, mingled with vindictive interpretations of those half truths, it seems that it would be better to offer full disclosure and let people decide for themselves; between God and each one individually.
What is insulting in this book is the premise that people are really quite ignorant and unable to reach logical, spiritual, and emotional conclusions on their own without all the rhetoric. Mr. Rhodes seems to have a need to tell us what we have just read and what it means to us and how it should relate to our relationships to Mormons. The very notion that I need an author to provide information, interpret the carefully selected "information" and then tell me what I should do about it, possibly at the peril of loosing or damaging otherwise good relationships is reprehensible.
Instead of building strong, trusting communities of "Fellow Citizens", Mr. Rhodes might do well to write a book entitled "The 10 Most Important Things You Can Say To Your Neighbor". Subtitled, "That Will Help Them Build Long Lasting Relationships". However since Ron's intentions seem to be to tear down instead of build up, he won't likely ever consider this topic.
Buy this book if you feel the need destroy someone else's faith. But make sure you're willing to accept the ramifications of damaged relationships. It seems that that God, no matter what you call his name, would never support a work that would dissuade people from coming closer to Christ. This book makes me feel sorry for Mr. Rhodes. Instead of building faith and belief in something, he seems to feel the need to serve as judge, jury and executioner by throwing Mormon's as well as other Christians who disagree with his earthly point of view; down to Hell!
An awful book. No facts, just fear and assumptions..........2007-08-01
I can't believe the total fear of truth and ignorance that is portrayed by this man. I have been searching for truth for most of my life now. From Catholocism to Evangelical Christanity and everything in-between. For a variety of very good reasons, I have chosen to accept the Latter-Day Saints as the true church of God. I know all the objections, but one clear message from Jesus' lips is what confirmed my decision. - "By Their Fruits will you know them". - No "christian" church I have ever attended has supported and uplifted their own members even close to how the LDS church does it. Do your research and you'll realize that each and every "ritual" of the church has a firm reason and purpose, and that it is all firmly grounded in worship and love of Christ. We are a "peculiar people", but then again that's what holy scripture said we would be, isn't it?
Not Morman Bashing / Biblical Truth.......2007-05-15
This is an excellent book to point out the completely bogus nature of Mormanism. It is amazing to me that people were so gullible to an obvious psychotic like Joseph Smith. No archeological evidence, contradictory to Biblical teaching, contradictory to its own doctrines, edited, re-edited, revised...just a goofy bunch of unsubstantiated bunk! I can't wait to have lunch with my morman friend and ask him about the incongruencies. No wonder all these mormans are bashing this book! Open your eyes morman folks. Seek the truth from God's word, not man.
Oh for heaven's SAKE!.......2007-05-01
This is the FIRST option that comes up when I search for LDS...I should be allowed to search for my own religious works without getting lambasted by anti-Mormon sentiment.
Anyway, browsed the book. Full of falsehood and slanted opinion. If you want truth, search the holy books of each faith and choose for yourself. That's what I did and it keeps me from feeling the need to put down others for my own satisfaction.
*sigh* Another lost soul..........2007-04-29
Ron Rhodes oviously has never read or attempted to do any research into The Book of Mormon. If you are looking for a book that will help you understand who or what the LDS(Church of Jeusu Christ of Later Day Saints) are then I highly recamend that you go to the LDS missionarys because this book just promotes noting but Falsehoods and lies about all that is true. For the sake of your eternal being please look somewhere else besides all the lies about mormons. When Ron realises in heaven what he has done by trying to spread lies about mormon dactrine in the form of a book for the gain of money he will feel unconfortable in the presence of God.

For those who like this kind of book..........2006-05-03
If you think you'd find a lot of unrelated platitudes interesting, then you'll enjoy this book.
Covey is the best!.......2004-09-23
Covey stands tall above the rest in a world rife with self-improvement seminars. His practical wisdom can be applied to the workplace, marriage and parenting and truly enhance your life! Covey's strong Christian faith and commitment to family are evident in his philosophies and can only enrich every aspect of the whole person - which is what his 7 Habits are all about. This book touches on his "Begin with the end in mind" and shows you how. Highly recommend!
Profound and Powerful - This program deserves ten stars!.......2004-09-08
If you have ever said to yourself:
I have too much to do and not enough time to do it
OR
I can't find the balance between my personal life and work. When I take time from one to the other, it just makes matters worse.
OR
There's simply too little of me to go around
OR
I don't feel in control of my life
OR
Way down inside I have this empty feeling. It's like the song, "Is that all there is?"
First Things First is not just another time management program. Rather, this is a program that connects the investment of time to our deeper priorities in life. The concepts espoused by Dr. Covey are profound, powerful and pragmatic.
Rather than offering you another clock, First Things First provides you with a compass. While other programs teach you harder, faster, and smarter First Things First teaches you direction and priorities because where you are heading is more important than how fast you are going.
Keeping with Dr. Covey's tradition, this program is about effectiveness not just efficiency. But not just effectiveness in your business life, but in your personal life as well.
Great program and highly recommended.
Loved the book and enjoy the audio program.......2004-09-08
Stephen Covey unveils a powerful time management systems here that really works. I bought the book and went ahead and bought the cd-audio program as well. I am now getting more done in half the time. Thank you Dr. Covey!
Three authors, 1 CD - Good Highlights.......2004-03-04
Some people on the reviews complained about the book not just being Covey talking...but if you notice the book is written by three people (yeah, Amazon only shows 2, but I have the book in front of me) The CD is a good highlight to explaining the basics to the First Things First principles. The cd says to get the book for using the meat and potatoes of the book...BUT there is also a 3 Disc set out there which is Unabriged and tells it all (for some reason I can't find it on Amazon...but have found it in searching around the net) So if you want the basics to remind yourself of what you are doing (Review regularly to make it a part of your life is a common self improvement strategy) is quicker than re-reading the book over and over... especially when given the gift of traffic to slow down and enjoy the CD.

Best Advice Ever For Students and Teachers.......2003-11-04
Ever since finding this gem of a book, I have ended each of the over 250 literacy seminars I present across the USA and Canada with selected quotes from this amazing collection of wisdom and sincere advice. From race car drivers to Nobel Prize winners, from Presidents to Special Olympians, the message expressed by so many, in so many different and individual ways, is the same. Persist, work hard, learn from failure and obstacles, use your passions positively, respect people and the planet as much as you respect yourself. What child does not need to hear this often? How many times is too many? How many negative, discouraging messages will be countered by the handwritten, thoughtful responses from the people in this book sharing their path? I logged on today to buy yet another copy, having given another one away to a seat mate on a plane who tearfully asked me for my copy to take home to his fragile teenage son. I love this book and know thousands of teachers do too. And I'll keep buying it.
Empty Sentences From Famous People.......2001-06-26
This book is terrible. It is a short work containing quotes from various famous people (FloJo makes an appearence, as does ex-President Clinton, as well as a [Special] Olympian). Unfortunately, none of these people seem to want to say anything interesting. Each quote is a bland variation on 'Work hard and you can achieve' or 'Aim for the sky.' I suppose it might appeal to Chicken Soup for the Soul/Life's Little Instruction Book crowd, but the multi-celled others who roll their eyes at platitudes and are unimpressed by management gurus will get little out of this modest volume of the lamest quotes ever.
Good coffeetable book.......2000-07-11
I read this book while preparing for the bar exam and it gave me inspiration to keep studying. It's a cutsy book, good for the coffee table. I loved seeing the handwriting of some of the most famous people in the world.
Handwritten and heartfelt inspiration from many we admire.......1997-04-23
As editor of this book, I thought it might be helpful and interesting to share the history of how it came together. My original intent was to create a collection of thoughts that could be sold to raise money to support many of the community needs I have an interest in. I had early help from my friend Congressman Patrick Kennedy in securing thoughts from Presidents Clinton, Bush and Ford. Having their thoughts, I then compiled a diverse list of folks that might be interesting to hear from. I dug around to find addresses, fax numbers, etc. and sent a fax note requesting "a thought on leadership, excellence and/or service that inspires your life's work". I attached copies of some notable letters I had received. The responses were varied and wonderful - a spontaneous outpouring of heartfelt thoughts that I believe will be inspiring and interesting for all. I am giving all royalties to Rhode Island charities to promote and support community leadership. In buying this book, you are helping me to help my community. Thank you. May you find the book helpful and may you always find vision to lead, courage to create and grace to serve. Best regards, Lorne Adrai
