Great reference material.......2007-05-19
The vocal score for "Into the Woods," while not practical for use at the piano due to the nature of the binding, is a terrific study aid for those interested in analyzing Sondheim's brilliant work. I recommend it to anyone wishing to enhance his or her understanding and appreciation of the piece.
Good value.......2007-01-05
Good condition, received fast. It's great, it's Sondheim, what else can I say?
Generous and Wonderful.......2005-08-31
Being one who always wanted to audition using the Witch's song or the Baker's Wife's song, I am delighted and grateful to Sondheim and Co. for putting out this amazing vocal score. The effort to do so must have been incredible. My only wish, not complaint, is that the chords were also represented by "C" or "Dmaj7" so that I could play along as I sing. I can read music, but if I have to play piano chords by sight only, it takes me days to finger it one note at a time. Well, that's probably my fault - practice, practice, practice! Anyway, it's quite a thorough job and now I have audition pieces galore! Only hope the accompanists can play it!
grrrrreat!.......2005-08-03
The musical score was in tip top shape and it came to my house in perfect timing for me to be able to use it for a local production. thank you.
Sure it's expensive, but you pay for what you get.......2004-01-08
This book is not for the intermediate pianist who wants to find some new music to play for the family at the family reunion. Not unless you've got a whole bunch of singers who want to join in...
This book contains ALL the music, compressed into one unit for the piano, and is the ultimate book for a piano accompanist- say in rehersal or such. Here lies the reason it costs so much: the market for this book is the amateur or even semi-professional theatre groups perfoming this show.
As this type of piano book, it's incredible. Every bit of music found in the musical is in the book, from underscoring to... well, you name it. And while it's fun to go through the book and learn the pieces, and say "hey, it sounds just like the recording!" it won't be much fun for anyone else to listen to unless you've got a singer (I'm learning to sing just so I can flush out my playing). Which, of course, is the whole point of the book.
Great music (Sondheim, of course), sounds great, and is perfect for accompanying a vocalist. Just make sure this is what you want.

Book Description
In this unique and readable study, Jon Finson views the mores and values of nineteenth-century Americans as they appear in their popular songs. The author sets forth lyricists' and composers' notions of courtship, technology, death, African Americans, Native Americans, and European ethnicity
by grouping songs topically. He goes on to explore the interaction between musical style and lyrics within each topic. The lyrics and changing musical styles present a vivid portrait of nineteenth-century America. The composers discussed in the book range from Henry Russell ("Woodman, Spare That
Tree"), Stephen Foster ("Oh! Susanna"), and Dan Emmett ("I Wish I Was in Dixie's Land"), to George M. Cohan and Maude Nugent ("Sweet Rosie O'Grady"), and Gussie Lord Davis ("In the Baggage Coach Ahead"). Readers will recognize songs like "Pop Goes the Weasel," "The Yellow Rose of Texas," "The
Fountain in the Park," "After the Ball," "A Bicycle Built for Two," and many others which gain significance by being placed in the larger context of American history.

Hildegard of Bingen: The Woman of Her Age
ASIN: 0520217586 |
Book Description
Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) would have been an extraordinary person in any age. But for a woman of the twelfth century her achievements were so exceptional that posterity has found it hard to take her measure. Barbara Newman, a premier Hildegard authority, brings major scholars together to present an accurate portrait of the Benedictine nun and her many contributions to twelfth-century religious, cultural, and intellectual life. Written by specialists in fields ranging from medieval theology to medicine to music, these essays offer an understanding of how one woman could transform so many of the traditions of the world in which she lived.
Hildegard of Bingen was the only woman of her age accepted as an authoritative voice on Christian doctrine as well as the first woman permitted by the pope to write theological books. She was the author of the first known morality play; an artist of unusual talents; the most prolific chant composer of her era; and the first woman to write extensively on natural science and medicine, including sexuality as seen from a female perspective. She was the only woman of her time to preach openly to mixed audiences of clergy and laity, and the first saint whose biography includes a first-person memoir.
Adding to the significance of this volume is the fact that Hildegard's oeuvre reflects the entire sweep of twelfth-century culture and society. Scholars and lay readers alike will find this collection a rich introduction to a remarkable figure and to her tumultuous world. With the commemoration of the 900th anniversary of Hildegard's birth in September 1998, the publication of Voice of the Living Light is especially welcome.

Taking a walk through grimy Victorian London.......2007-09-18
This is the book where Lydia Joyce finally fits into her "voice". In the previous books the writing style felt forced to me, and the characters were overwhelmed by the painstaking job Joyce took of creating a dark, dense atmosphere. Thankfully in "Voices of the Night", she seems to hit her stride and from the initial chilling scene wherein the heroine, Maggie, is coerced into an unforgettable crime to the fitting end, the pace never slackens, the atmosphere is grimy and decadent, and the protagonists and secondary characters leap to life. I look forward to seeing more from Joyce, and hope she is in for a long career.
Not just Mind Candy..........2007-05-10
I picked up this book looking for a simple afternoon read that I could finish and then add to my ever-growing pile of books to donate to the salvation army. Much to my joy, this was not that kind of book.
A lot of romance novels lately are sacrificing excellent plot lines in exchange for large quantities of sex, which is comparable to dating a beautiful brainless man. Its wonderful at first but eventually you just end up dissappointed and annoyed.
Voices of the Night had everything I look for in a romance. Great sex, yes, but also wonderfully crafted, easy to relate to characters and a story line that draws you in immediately and doesn't let go.
Maggie was wonderful. She wasn't a martyr, but she was willing to do just about anything for the people she considers her family. When situations force her to accept Lord Edgington's offer to help him win his bet, she is very practical about it. A woman in her situation wouldn't allow herself to get caught up in dreaming. She knows her position in life is so far beneath Lord Edgington that their isn't any hope for them but she allows herself to fall in love anyway, knowing that their time together is finite.
Lord Edgington likewise was an extremely well-developed hero. He seemed like a real person to me, and by the end of the story you were rooting for him and Maggie to work things out.
And the twist at the end of the story, was really a surprise to me. Its usually so easy to see them coming, but in this book you don't know what is happening until the author reveals it.
I would recommend this book to anyone. It will be going on my keeper shelf to be re-read until it falls apart.
Pygmalion in Dickens' London .......2007-03-11
Maggie Knight grew up in the London slums where thugs and hookers were the norm. By 1860 though still young, she becomes a surrogate "Mother" to even younger orphans protecting them from the lowlifes who would prey on these innocents.
In 1864 Lord Charles Crossham bet his sister Millie that he could make a purse out of a sow's hide. He selects Maggie as his metamorphosed target. She rejects his proposal until he offers to help her orphans as Maggie would do anything for her wards. As he teaches Maggie to behave as a lady, he falls in love with her. However, she knows a lofty aristocrat like her Charles needs better than a polished street ragamuffin especially since a dangerous gang leader threatens her "children" and her beloved.
Placing Pygmalion in Dickens' London gives the audience a taste of VOICES OF THE NIGHT, a delightful Victorian romance. Whereas Maggie is a precocious nurturing Eliza, Charles is somewhat her Henry but actually is much more to her; and Danny the gang leader is Bill Sykes (of Oliver fame). The story line has a freshness of its own as sub-genre readers will rejoice with this fine historical.

Book Description
A psychopathic killer of university students is on the loose in Bologna. Rookie detective Grazia Negro is put in charge of this critical investigation, with only her gut instincts to guide her. She gets an unexpected breakthrough when she meets Simone, a young blind man who spends his days at home alone, listening to jazz and to the sounds of the city on his scanner. From the multiple perspectives of the detective, the blind man, and the assassin, Lucarelli weaves a gripping thriller.
Carlo Lucarelli, one of the most exciting young writers in Europe, has written eleven novels, all of them noirs. He also hosts a television series, teaches writing in Torino, sings in a post-punk band, and edits an on-line magazine, Incubatoio 16.
Customer Reviews:
Metropolitan Bologna.......2005-07-02
Entangling and beautifully written, Lucarelli's mystery novel gives us a totally unexpected perspective on modern Italy. Touring through Bologna with Grazia Nero and the Iguana (guess who they are...) is a metropolitan experience, like it would be in Chicago or Manhattan. The underworld of the students' population, the young people's lifestyle, and the slightly feminist twirl in the end make "Almost Blue" the most interesting (at least to me) mystery story recently written.
Simone is definitely blue, but the story is green........2004-06-18
The basic story is not remarkable. Young cop Grazia Negro is pursuing a serial killer of university students in Bologna. The male cops undersestimate her, and the bodies are piling up. What is remarkable about "Almost Blue" is that center of the story is Simone, a young blind man who navigates the world by smell and characterizes his experiences according to colors he has never seen. Green voices are bad. Blue voices are good. Simone spends his time in his room listening to the world on his scanners with jazz playing in the background. One night, Simone hears the "green" voice of a man who is a serial killer. Grazia finds her way to Simone and enlists his help in finding the killer. What happens after that is disappointing, not to say bizarre, from the perspective of crime fiction, but Simone is so interesting that he almost makes the book worth reading.
A very well written psychological suspense novel.......2004-02-25
In Bologna, Italy, students are being killed by a serial killer- one who assumes the identity of the murdered person. Assigned to the case is Grazia Negro, a detective. Grazia uses a blind man, Simone Martini, who listens to the city on a scanner, to try to apprehend the killer. As usual the crimes become more personal where eventually Grazia, herself, becomes a possible target.
ALMOST BLUE is a very well written psychological suspense drama. It is quite unique in its structure. Chapters or actually sections alternate with point of view between the killer's, Simone's and Grazia. The chapters are quite short keeping the pacing rapid throughout. The length of the book is more that of a novella yet works perfectly for the drama portrayed. The end result is a chilling portrayal of the criminal mind.
Lucarreili -Almost Blue is a modern day masterpiece.......2002-08-02
Lucareelli from the first chapther grabs the readers attention and doesn't let go to the chilling ending. It not only is exciting murder thriller but also offers insight into cultural aspects of Modern day Italy. A word of warning the novel isn't for the faint of heart. I still have trouble sleeping at night I keep waking imaging the killer is in my room.
Distinctive prose style sets this one apart.......2002-05-06
I bought this after it had been featured on NPR, and found it a compelling and disturbing read. The way that the author alternates POV's is challenging. As you are reading, you are not often able to immediately determine who is speaking. Chapter trasition is inspired, as well. The violence is described in a manner that is spine-chilling without being repulsive. This is a great read for someone bored with the cookie cutter way thrillers are currently written. It is refreshingly short and well-paced.

A notation and watch for this on television.......2001-05-12
The correct opening line of "My Romance" should be "My romance doesn't HAVE to have a moon in the sky" instead of "NEED to have a moon in the sky" as I incorrectly stated in my review here.
Also, in "Lady is a Tramp" I used the third person instead of the original first person usage to demonstrate the lyrics. The original "Lady is a Tramp" is written as "I get too hungry for dinner at eight. I like the theater but never come late....etc." I used the third person because it is the more familiar version.
AND AS A TESTAMENT to the timelessness of Rodgers and Hart's songs, listen to the current Ralph Lauren "Romance" perfume commercial. It features James Taylor and Carly Simon singing the opening and closing lines of "My Romance". It's a beautiful, heartfelt song nicely rendered by Taylor and Simon.
An important collection.......2001-05-09
Lorenz Hart is one of the finest lyricists in the history of American musical theater. He is largely responsible for elevating the process of writing lyrics into an art form. Before Hart, lyrics were usually trite and predictable with simplistic rhymes such as "I am blue, and so are you."
Hart wrote lyrics that are cerebral and sophisticated. His compositions are infused with wit and wisdom. He used complex rhymes. An example from "My Funny Valentine": "Your looks are laughable, unphotographable. Yet you're my favorite work of art. Is your figure less than Greek? Is your mouth a little weak? When you open it to speak, are you smart?"
Another example from "Bewitched": "I'm wild again, beguiled again, a whimpering simpering child again...." And yet another example from "Lady is a Tramp": "She gets too hungry for dinner at eight. She likes the theater but never comes late. She never bothers with people she hates. That's why the lady is a tramp."
Hart could be wistful and romantic as in "My Romance": "My romance doesn't need to have a moon in the sky. My romance doesn't need a blue lagoon standing by. No month of May. No twinkling star. No hideaway. No soft guitar."
Hart's lyrics are consistently observant and very often ingenious. They are the perfect match for the variety and intricacy of Richard Rodgers' superb music.
When you read through this collection of Hart's compositions, you will realize why this diminutive, gifted and endearing artist is a true giant of the musical theater.
A valuable document on many levels.......1999-10-10
Very few collections of lyrics are worth reading as literature. First there was W.S. Gilbert, who showed the way that intelligent lyrics need not be anathema to a light-hearted musical; and whose lyrics can stand as independent poems. Afterwards we had P.G. Wodehouse, Cole Porter, Noel Coward, Ira Gershwin--and the best of 'em all, Lorenz Hart.
Not only is what he says witty but how he says it is even wittier. There is no room here to give examples of his incredible rhymes. But turn to the single example of "To Keep My Love Alive" which might be the very last set of lyrics he wrote before a lifetime of alcohol finally took its toll; and then compare it with any Gilbert's "list" songs to see the genius of this artist.
On an other level, any student of psychology will pounce upon the self-lacerating images conjured up in his "love" songs. Because of his own physical problems, we have "My Funny Valentine" in which the love object is "less than Greek" with a chin that's a little weak. And being in love is little more than "broken dates" and "flying plates."
His out and out parodies rival Cole Porter's, as witness "Way Out West on West End Avenue" with its kitchen range and so on. And all this is helped by his "signature" trick of breaking up words in the middle to get rhymes like "Summer journeys to Niagra/ And to other places aggra-/ Vate, all our cares."
On the level of Broadway musical history, the value of this collection speaks for itself, especially with the fine photographs and annotations about every show and then every song within the show. A scholarly masterpiece.
So how come you don't have a copy?
Book Description
A collection of Fine Art Photography of landscapes from all over the world accompanied by brief poetry excerpts from Yousef's personal diary.
Customer Reviews:
Disappointing.......2007-09-07
A book of adequate, but not great, landscape photographs. The real turn-off was the fatuous forward (the silliest I have ever read) and the 'poetry' of the photographer. If you want really great landscape photos without the silliness, I recommend anything by Joe Cornish or Tim Fitzharris. I am returning the book.
The New Centerpiece on Your Coffee Table.......2003-04-18
I first came across this book through one of my friends who is also an amateur photographer. I was amazed at the varying levels of texture from page to page. This book inspired me and changed the way that I myself approach photography and how I view colors as well as framing in the world around me.
I now own my own copy of "Voices" and I keep it predominantly displayed for others to be inspired as I was. The serenity found in many of the pictures touches me and the fluidity in other pictures move me. Every picture throughout the book reflect the title. You will never get as close to actually seeing "Voices of Light". To understand you must see.
The full page photos are museum quality artwork.......2001-02-20
Voices Of Light documents Palestinian photographer Yousef Khanfar's passion for photography as his language of choice for conveying the beauty, inspiration, grandeur, intimacy, and spirituality of landscape imagery. His full color, full page photos are museum quality artwork and serve to express the awe and wonder of the natural world of wind, water, stone, and tree. Voices Of Light is a most remarkable and memorable volume of powerful photography with each image offering a window to the world while revealing the handiwork of God.

lyrics for "Rosalie".......2004-07-16
I wish I had known about this book sooner. This is a "must-buy" for anyone serious about Cole's work. What was of greatest interest to me was that all of the lyrics for Cole's 1937 "Rosalie" are included. If you want to read an alternate treatment, recommended is "Rosalie, A Storybook Operetta" with the incomparable lyrics of Cole Porter to move the romance along.
Sublime.......2003-10-28
Everything about this one is right. Beautiful job. And so elegant which is really so fitting for Cole Porter. I think it's worthy of him. What a joy!
Excellent reference for any Cole Porter fan or researcher.......1998-11-27
A "must have" for any true Cole Porter fan or music researcher. This collection has the all the lyrics for Cole Porter's almost-1000 songs! Of particular note is an awesome "phrase index" for looking up common phrases and quotes in order to find what song a phrase is from. It also includes copyright information for every song for those who want to quote Cole for whatever reason.
