When asked, Maurice Sendak insisted that he was not a comics artist, but an illustrator. However, it's hard to not notice comics aspects in works like In the Night Kitchen. The child of the story is depicted floating from panel to panel as he drifts through the fantastic dream world of the bakers' kitchen. Sendak's use of multiple panels and integrated hand-lettered text is an interesting contrast to his more traditional children's books containing single-page illustrations such as his wildly popular Where the Wild Things Are.

Our favorite book!.......2007-09-29
This has been our favorite bed time story for years. Our nine year olds still like having it read to them at night. The pictures are amazing--of course, it's Sendak--but the story is fantastic too. Our children had to explain to Dad that it's just a dream. Some adults may be too literal to get it, if so, just ask your kids to explain!
"In the Night Kitchen" a must for every child's library.......2007-09-17
This book along with the better known "Where the Wild Things Are" belong in every child's library. Great illustrations and text make this book one that parents and children can enjoy over and over again for years.
Brings back the Memories.......2007-09-03
This brings back memories of going to library as a small child and discovering books for the first time on my own. I couldn't read yet, but I would find this book over and over along with Sendak's other book, "Where the Wild Things Are." And look at the pictures and imagine what the story might be. When I could finally read myself, I enjoyed the book even more!
My 2 year old's favorite.......2007-08-30
My 2 year old loves the adventures of Micky, even more than my fave, 'Where the Wild Things Are'. Sendak's art is beautiful and it flows from page to page. He loves Mickey's shouts, from "Quiet Down There!" to Cocka Doodle Doo!" and asks for repeat readings befor bedtime.
This is a classic that holds up well and should be enjoyed by all parents and children
The inner world of the child.......2007-07-10
This expresses the state of a child's preference very well whether in fantasy or reality along with innocence, whether or not it's possibly promoted earlier in life.

Great book.......2007-03-11
My students have been reading this book and giving it great reviews. It's a faster read than most of our Reading Olympics books, but they really seem to enjoy it.
Teacher's Grade: A-.......2006-07-14
I love reading this book aloud to my 2nd grade students. There is abundant humor, a lot of action, and excellent dialogue. The kids especially love the disgusting giant with flatulence issues, and the fire-breathing dragon.
This is an excellent springboard into reading for reluctant but capable boy readers.
You would think it was the authors fifth not first.............2006-03-24
You knew this was the authors first book, but you felt far into the story while reading....which made it good...I would like to read more books by this author.
The start of an empire.......2006-02-21
Finally Lane Smithh and Jim Szcieska have found their niche. These (now eleven?) stories are about to become a series on either Nickelodeon or Cartoon Network. And this is the book that started it all. Alas.
The good thing is that through the eyes of young boys the era of the Middle Ages is debunked from myth - it was smelly, dirty, unhealthy, and those suits of armor made from aluminium today weighed a lot more in those days.
But the story reads like it has a formula already: cliffhanger at the end of Chapter 1 (where do the boys wind up?), cliffhanger at the end of Chapter 2 (the boys are about to be attacked), cliffhanger at the end of Chapter 3 (the Book that got them there is in peril/unattainable/out of reach), happy resolution at the end of the book.
It's the young person's version of Robert Ludlum. Pity. I bought the first four books on the strength of other books by this dynamic duo, but I will not be buying the rest. I don't buy Robert Ludlum because I don't buy formula at any level.
Life is way more dynamic than that.

We're Going to Have Our Cake...and Be Eaten, Too!.......2007-07-11
"Our teacher, Ms. Frizzle, is always surprising us. So on her birthday, we decided to surprise her. We planned a big party. We had balloons, streamers, confetti, and even noisemakers. 'We thought of everything,', said Carolos. But Arnold wasn't so sure. 'Something's missing', he said." -- From the book
In case you're not familiar with Scholastic series of Magic School Bus books, they are books which are based on the animated TV series--which are, incindentally, based on the ORIGINAL books written by Joanna Cole and illustrated by Bruce Degen. (Whew!)
In The Magic School Bus Gets Baked in a Cake, Ms. Frizzle takes her class to a bakery for a chemistry field trip. According to Ms. Frizzle, a bakery is a small chemical factory.
The class gets the idea to distract Ms. Frizzle by sending her to a nearby auto parts store to fix the bus. Meanwhile, they've been shrunken to the size of a moth--but make the attempt to bake a chocolate cake for Ms. Frizzle's surprise birthday party!
The kids learn about measuring and chemical reactions, including to the old vinegar + baking soda = gas experiment (which actually contributes to them escaping getting baked into the cake!).
As always, there are cheesy jokes throughout (e.g. "We've got flour power" and "This batter is taking a real beating"), but it's a great introduction to "kitchen chemistry"--and how mixing ingredients and adding heat (baking) are, in fact, chemical reactions.
I use the Magic School Bus books, videos and DVDs to supplement science class (I homeschool), and they never disappoint with their down-to-Earth approach to science concepts.
'The Magic School Bus Gets Baked' is questionable.......2005-01-07
I don't think children's books should glorify these sorts of "trips". But the colors are vivid and I think most of the unsuitable references will go over the heads of its younger readers.
MAgic school bus "cake".......2004-02-04
I liked this book, it was interrasting and it had made me read more and omre till i got through it all. I like the part when the shrunk and the guy was chaseing them and the flew into the cake and went into the oven i didn't think there would make it out.
Kitchen Chemistry Fizzes.......2001-06-14
When their inimitable school bus goes on the fritz (or should I say, "frizz"?,) the students get worried: this is one field trip they don`t want to miss. They`re trying to give their unique teacher a surprise birthday party and need to get to the bakery for the cake. When they finally reach their destination, the unstable bus suddenly shrinks, with everyone in it, to the size of a moth. They dodge the baker`s fly swatter and Ms Frizzle while using kitchen chemistry to get the job done. My boys and I miss the volume of information and mini "reports" of the original series, but they still learn and have fun at the same time. They have a new respect for cooking, as edible chemistry. And the baking soda experiment at the back of the book is a rainy day standby in our household: we love the fizz from the Frizz!
I liked it........1997-11-10
I liked it because the baker thought the magic school bus was a moth.

Book Description
The first four books of the wildly popular Time Warp Trio series are now in one value-priced boxed set! Whether the gang's fighting off the Black Knight in the middle of Camelot, practicing magic tricks on Blackbeard and his pirates, stampeding cattle in the Old West, or running from a woolly mammoth, one thing is for sure: no one's ever bored when the Time Warp Trio's around!
Customer Reviews:
Knights are Meant to be Respected.......2006-12-19
I didn't like Time Warp Trio because when it began it was mostly about the knight. As you read on, it tells about the giant and the dragon. It made the knight look not very smart and like he had no power. The kids basically looked like they had all the power, even without armor. If I were the author, I would have had more action with the knight and the kids and the knight would have been the greatest fighter or he would have been up there with the greatest heroes. -LL
Poor langauge and inappropriate humor.......2005-12-31
I was very shocked when I read this book to find that so many people deem these appropriate for children. They do have some information for the kids to learn from (the reason I chose them originally) but the way the children talk and act is terrible! I had only thumbed through one and chose it from the library from my son, then I let him read the rest of the series and suddenly had him calling names and being disrespectful and LAUGHING about it!
I was really disappointed. I think things can be funny without name calling and using poor language. I am just glad I haven't ever purchased any.
A little too much like magic tree house.......2005-09-01
These books are really nice, but my daughter has already read a bunch of the magic tree house books and these are just too much like them.. she thinks these are funnier but the idea has no sparkle for her any more.. but I would recommend these books if you haven't started reading the tree house series..
Let's Do the Time Warp Again.......2004-09-23
I was going through some old books the other day when I happened upon my "Time Warp Trio" collection. What began as thumbing through "Knights of the Kitchen Table" ended with my reading all four of the stories right then and there. They were terriffic when I was little and they are terriffic now.
Great for boys!.......2004-03-26
It's hard to find books for boys that really turn them on to reading but these did the trick. My son insisted that I read them too so we could talk about the plots. Entertaining and well written, perfect for a second or third grader.

Geared towards vegetarians.......2006-10-12
Just so you know- this book is a good book. I found his vast knowledge base a great resource, there were many things about food that I did not know- many items of trivia that come up while reading that impressed me, or were new to me. What made me give it 4 not 5 stars is the fact that the book barely mentions the magical relationships with meats/poultry. I did not gather this would be true by looking at the title. You need to be aware that this book is geared towards vegetarian eating. Go and look at the table of contents if available to you here. You will find that there are no chapters on meat/poultry.
I thought this unfair. Or, to say the least a little bit misleading. You can't in my opinion be a true encyclopedia of something unless you're going to include it all- right? If you are going to have an entire chapter on fish, why stop there? He says himself in the book that it was a decided thing, to avoid talking about meats and he tells why. But you would not have known this unless you'd borrowed this from a friend, or I told you now- I think that they should have encorporated the words VEGETARIAN into the title so we would automatically know. Or at least on the back cover, mention something about this.
If I had to choose between this book, and Patricia Telesco's A Kitchen Witch's Cookbook- I'd go for Patricia's, not just because there are TONS more recipes, but also because she includes ALL aspects of the human palate today. I think this book is a GREAT book for vegetarians interested in the magickal correlation of the foods they normally eat (fish/veg/fruit/grain/dairy/sweets). I just wanted to tell everyone to check out the table of contents and decide if this one is for you- or if you need more info on other foods.
Cunning Enc. Wicca Kitchen.......2005-09-29
I was replacing, my first copy decided to go live with someone else. I find this an excellent for someone with little experience with herbs and their uses and some one who is a novice in the kitchen.
I like having it to use as a resource so I can double check what I'm doing, as I sometimes cannot remember as well as I use to.
GREAT KITCHEN RESOURCE.......2005-09-06
This is a good book that doesn't offer too many recipes...I already like my OWN recipes! But, what it does do is highlights many ingredients I already use, and let's me know what magical properies they have. This allows me to customize my own recipes to express the magical intention (along with flavorful intention) I am crafting. It could use MORE ingredients,(which is why I gave it a 4*and not a 5*,. as there are some common ones that are missing, but overall it is a good reference for the magical kitchen.
Book Description
Your Kitchen's Magic Wand consists of 60+ recipes for all kinds of dishes that are made considerably easier with the use of an immersion blender.

knowing what to cook.......2007-04-05
This book has been so helpful in the holiday seasons. I have been able to find recipes for all to enjoy. Some may be put off my the name of the book, but it's what drew me in. Magic is in everything we do every day.
Good recipes but very unsure about the research.......2007-01-21
The recipes in this book are great HOWEVER as for the correspondence Appendix's in the back I'm finding lots of errors. I'm not Wiccan so I only work with Germanic deities and Patricia obviously knows less on deities from this area.
Appendix A errors
Balder is not a Hearth Deity, Frigg/Frige is the goddess of home & hearth and she is only mentioned with the byname of Berchta.
Appendix B errors
1 Not only does she only list foods that corresponde with only 4 actual German/Scandinavian deities leaving out a whole bunch, Audhumla & Gunnlod aren't even deities, one is a sacred cow & the other a giantess.
2 She left out the obvious Idunn/Idunna to correspond with apples.
3 Mead also mostly associates with Odin who won the mead from Gunnlod or Njord who brews the mead for the gods.
Holidays on page 8 - Feast of St Charlemagnes Breakfast
Another biggie is if you follow the Germanic deities you are an Asatruar and no Asatruar is ever going to hold anything to honor Charlemagne for any reason unless it's to curse his name. He was detrimental to our Heathen ancestors, the only good thing he ever did was start the medieval university.
I know this author is Wiccan but Wiccans are not the only ones who may want a kitchen witch cookbook. Quality research is worth a lot so I'd check other sources and compare when it comes to these correspondences she has listed.
Enjoy the recipes tho and don't pay full prices for this book, I got mine thru the marketplace for half the listed price and am glad I did.
Kitchen Witch's Cookbook.......2006-01-20
My wife love it, everything on the book is full of new knowledge to her.
Food good, magic not so good........2004-03-09
Geez, what a mess.
Ms. Telesco is capable of writing a passable recipe, provided that the cook is capable of making judgement calls about cooking time, spicing, and other details she occasionally omits. There's a nice variety of flavors in this cookbook. As a book of recipes it is serviceable, if not stellar.
However, if you're hoping for a reference to aid you in actual magical cooking LOOK SOMEWHERE ELSE. I'm quite sure the author meant well but the magic in this book is a train wreck. Rather than provide a handy list of ingredients and their magical affinities, Ms. Telesco provides the recipe and blithely decides what the combination is supposed to do. In the paragraph of banter accompanying each recipe, if one is lucky she'll mention one or two of the ingredients and divulge what she's using them for in that recipe, but have a care--the sympathies of a single ingredient seem to vary widely from recipe to recipe. And again, one is basically left to rely on her interpretation.
She also tosses in some ill-explained numerology (five is apparently the number for vision, but according to who? And what are the other numbers supposed to mean?). Related holidays and god/desses are also listed with the recipes. This was a nice touch, but it seems like Ms. Telesco has made the mistake of seeing 'witch' as a synonym for anything non-Christian. A dizzying index of holidays is in the back, including Buddhist, Shinto, African, and a few Mexican Catholic that apparently made the cut because they were fun. Witching has enough of its own holidays--cribbing them willy-nilly from other faiths seemed just a little cheap and tacky to me.
In short, I suspect Ms. Telesco of making up the magic bits as she went along. But some of the food she makes is tasty. Buy this one used.
Intriguing and delicious recipes..........2003-07-08
...both modern and historic, and from nearly every region in the world. The various recipes included in the book are, with a few exceptions, rare and creative. So far, most of the recipes I've tried have been great successes, with the rest becoming very palatable with the addition of simple ingredients like salt, pepper and/or lemon juice. The best part was that most recipes were easy to follow, though heavy on spices both rare and common, even for a beginner like myself. I recommend the Rosemary Sorbet, the simple apple pie and "Marian's Stuffed Salmon."
Since I'm not a culinary historian, I cannot comment on the authenticity of some of the "historic" recipes (including the aforementioned sorbet allegedly from 16th century England). Nonetheless, they all taste wonderful and makie interesting additions to the common repertoire.
The only problem I found was that the author seemed undecided whether her audience were experienced cooks or green beginners and was inconsistent on the specificity of her directions in her recipes (e.g. cooking times, salt & pepper spicing, etc.)

Customer Reviews:
Don't judge this book by the cover!.......2007-09-24
From the title and the cover, I thought this was going to be some socially backwards Stepford-wife-in-training manga. I was wrong. In actuality, the story is about an orphan girl who discovers her extraordinary talent for taste and cooking. In some cases she proves herself as good if not better than professional chefs of Tokyo.
The story emphasises the meaning of having a strong and compassionate heart, caring for others, and selflessness. From making colorful soda for others on a hot day, to baking a pie for a friend with an eating disorder, KP touches alot of bases with food :) Great manga. I recommend it for all ages.
Finding Her Prince.......2007-02-24
The Amazon review covered the plot really well so I'm just going to give some of my impressions after reading. Alright, I picked up Kitchen Princess unsure of what to expect and ended up being really happy I purchased it! KP may rely on some typical shoujo plot devices, but it still manages to feel fresh and cute. The emphasis on cooking was great. Najika uses her kitchen skills to make others happy in a sweet, non-sappy way. The art was fitting for the story. I personally enjoy Natsumi Ando's style. Her characters are all attractive with a wide range of expressions and poses. The backgrounds are well- rendered and are more detailed then I've seen in other shoujo lately. And the food looked delicious ^_^
Del Rey hasn't done a lot of (if any) shoujo, so I was really happy to see them publish this. The translation reads nicely and I didn't spot any obvious spelling errors. In the back they included their standard translators notes and a preview for volume 2. Also included in the back of the book are recipes! You can find out how to make all the tasty treats Najika made.
In the end, Kitchen Princess was a really enjoyable book. If you like shoujo, KP is a great title to add to you collection. It's cute with good art and a lot of promise for future volumes (I can't wait to find out who her prince is!).

Now she’s attending the prestigious Seika Academy, where she hopes to find her “prince,” the boy who saved her when she was a little girl. One big problem: It seems that nobody wants her at the college–except two cute brothers, Sora and Daichi, who befriend her right away. But the super-popular teen model Akane will do anything to drive Najika out of the school, even if it means staging a cooking contest with an award-winning chef as Najika’s opponent. Delicious, Diversified and a Welcome Addition to the Kitchen.......2005-05-10
With all due respect to the previous reviewer I have to wonder why one would buy a cookbook if they did not WANT a cookbook (isn't that being unfair to the author?). Did he even try some of the recipes? As an avid reader I'm aware that Ms. Telesco wrote the original Kitchen Witch's Cookbook 10 years ago and this book celebrates that landmark - it seems very fitting that she would do so since it was her original work that started the recipe trend. As was the first tome, this book is FANTASTIC.
The KWC is a title that you can use everyday at home to whip up meal time magick that's tasty and meaningful! I love it and cannot wait to make more recipes (I also plan to use it for planning special items for festivals and gatherings).
Yes there are some other cookbooks on the market but Telesco is trusted for her culinary expertise and her knowledge of folk traditions. Since we all have to eat anyway, I see no reason not to make it a sacred act filled with foods whose energies support my daily goals. That's exactly what this book offers - a way to feed body, mind, and soul from one very inventive platter.
By far my favorite chapter is Barbeque - you can tell this is a subject near and dear to the author's heart. The sauces and marinades made my mouth water just reading them. The magickal instructions and methods are simple to follow, allowing you to really focus on your intentions and the overall quality of the food. Oh, and vegetarians, take heart - Telesco has tried to include a healthy portion of recipes for your pagan pantry to enjoy as well.
The amazing variety of recipes will please both novice cooks and experienced ones alike. I strongly suggest it as a great gift for birthdays and the holiday season!
Wiccan Culinary Cuisine.......2005-04-16
Just what the neo-Pagan community needs, another culinary cookbook. While Trish does an excellent job with her writing talents, surely the subject matter couldn't be more benign? Is this yet another new age fare brought out to merely take up space on B&N bookshelves? You know with all the Pagan food recipes in the various occult books, you'd presume that when Joe and Mary Sixpack thumb thru a Pagan book, they'd figure we do little more than relax, visualize and eat!
This now begs the question as to WHY there are no Ceremonial Magic culinary cookbooks out in print? Why there are no Vodu culinary cookbooks or Shamanistic culinary cookbooks? These practitioners eat too don't they? Or is this truly a superfluous subject that only Wiccans seem to have in common?
My take is that food is a very individualistic thing. Putting together a culinary guide that covers all the recipes I'll ever want is tempting however due to personal tastes as well as spontaneous hankerings for a certain "something" makes that a bit of a dream. For instance I have your typical Pillsbury & Betty Crocker cookbooks that I've picked up from yard sales over the years plus several other books dealing with Oriental cuisines and Hispanic foods as these two latter cuisines are my favorite.
Given the cheeky names of her subjects such as "Casseroles Coven-Craft", "Barbecues and Blessed Be's" and my personal favorite "Prayerful Poultry" (I've never seen any poultry pray), Trish tries to be serious by inserting folklore, legend and customs about how the various ingredients were used or prepared or outright shunned in various cultures.
Some of the recipes actually do look tasty but again the tongue-in-cheek names are almost hystericaly "Make It Count Beans" reminded me of the oncoming flatulence episodes of if you're gonna pass wind, make it count even though she was speaking in terms of "bean counters". LOL
All in all, it's a cute book at best but not one I'd take all that seriously to aid your magical practices. Though this IS a "kitchen witch's" guide still I don't know of too many Wiccan practitioners who'll be waiting until the right Moon phase before preparing Solar Goose or Self Control Cabbage.
The book does offer an index and bibliography and at the listed price I thought it a bit too much even with the interspersed folklore that I found interesting. I give this book a solid two out of five stars merely for it's whimsical attitude of Wicca and culinary creations.
