Amazon.com's Best of 2001

While the title How to Be a Domestic Goddess may at first make a modern woman bristle, the book itself is just as likely to inspire the woman who brings home the bacon to start baking cakes. And what's wrong with that? "This isn't a dream," writes British cookery deity Nigella Lawson in her preface. "What's more, it isn't even a nightmare." Lawson--the author of How to Eat, food editor of British Vogue, and star of her own TV cooking show, Nigella Bites--has been suspected of upholding the woman-laboring-in-the-kitchen paradigm, but there are lots of hard-working women out there who derive great satisfaction from cooking, even after a long day at the office. For those women, Lawson, who looks more Elizabeth Hurley than Martha Stewart, is the perfect guide to the wondrous world of baking.

"You know, I'm not a cook-to-impress kind of girl," Lawson says midway through the book, but she must admit there are few things more rewarding than putting a warm homemade pie or fragrant cake on the table--especially after preparing a home-cooked meal. How to Be a Domestic Goddess: Baking and the Art of Comfort Cooking makes just such a reward possible, in fact positively enticing, with its delicious selection of easy-to-make cakes, pies, cookies, breads, even jams, presented in Lawson's chatty, pleasantly glib manner. Turns out, you don't have be a Pierre Hermé to make to-die-for chocolate confections; nor do you have to spend hours "faffing around" with hot pans and jars to have jam at teatime. You just need to try baking once, then again, and next thing you know, you'll be turning out cookies and desserts every chance you get. Many of the recipes are hand-me-downs or adaptations from other sources, be it a favorite cookbook or a restaurant in some far-off region, but all are imbued with Lawson's wit and distinctive touch. Profiteroles, My Way are "monumentally impressively better" than the original, thanks to burnt-sugar custard and toffee sauce. Her Coffee and Walnut Splodge Cookies are "American-style cookies; in other words just dropped onto the baking sheet free-form," and so on.

A sophisticated female alter ego of British mop-top Jamie Oliver, and considerably more sly and comedic than most American gourmets, Nigella is sure to convince more than a few up-and-coming hostesses that baking is indeed women's work. --Rebecca Wright

Book Description

The trouble with much modern cooking is that the mood it induces in the cook is one of skin-of-the-teeth efficiency, all briskness and little pleasure. Sometimes that's the best we can manage, but at other times we don't want to feel stressed and overstretched, but like a domestic goddess, trailing nutmeggy fumes of baking pie in our languorous wake.... --from How to Be a Domestic Goddess

How to Be a Domestic Goddess is not about being a goddess, but about feeling like one. What this deliciously mouthwatering cookbook demonstrates is that it's not actually hard to bake a pan of muffins or a sponge layer cake, but the appreciation and satisfaction they bring are disproportionately high. Filled with over 220 gorgeously illustrated recipes, this book understands our anxieties, feeds our fantasies, and puts cakes, pies, pastries, preserves, puddings, breads, and cookies back in our own kitchens. The domestic goddess has to maintain her (or his) cool when faced with pastry, of course -- but with Nigella Lawson's guidance, even puff pastry can be pain-free.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE IT!.......2007-08-28

I am not a baker, but each recipe is clearly explained. Nigella does a good job of letting the reader know what to expect after every step so the possibility of making mistakes are very low. I'm so happy that I chose this as my go-to baking book!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent!.......2007-07-27

Beautiful photographs, excellent recipes, this book will get used over and over again... The London Cheesecake is the best cheesecake I've ever had.

5 out of 5 stars What a feast!.......2007-06-28

I bought this book in a hurry one day based solely on the title. I wasn't disappointed. This is the most fun I've ever had with a cookbook. I've tried more recipes out of this book than any other cookbook I've owned and after two years continue to turn to it. Nigella's writing is beyond unique - what a pleasure to read, let alone to cook. I've also given this book as gifts several times and have received so many comments on it after about what a great gift it was it continues to be in my "good gift ideas" stock pile. Worth the money!

4 out of 5 stars Aims high, but misses the mark in many instances.......2007-04-27

This book is beautifully presented and has some real winners, but it would have benefitted from more careful editing and testing. I'm glad I took the time to look up 'self-rising cake flour' as it seems many disappointed reviewers did not, with disastrous results. To make self-rising cake flour, simply add about 1 tsp of baking powder per 1 cup of cake flour -- if you substitute regular cake flour, much more common in the US than self-rising, your cakes will not rise properly. I do think that the editors might have anticipated this problem, and made a small note in the US version of the book to help novice bakers. I've had great success with the Victoria Sponge and it's variations, particularly the butterscotch cake -- delicious!! I also liked the onion pie that another reviewer found underwhelming, but was frustrated at the consistency of the crust -- I followed the recipe carefully, but the crust was still impossibly soft -- I had to scoop it onto the onions, cobbler-fashion, rather than patting it out and draping it, as instructed. I also recommend increasing the thyme and using sweet yellow onions, as red onions have a bit of a grayish cast after prolonged cooking. Serve with a green salad for a very nice lunch indeed! Today I made the 'burnt butter brown sugar cupcakes' and found that the recipe makes only 9 cupcakes, rather than the dozen promised, and I had to scrape every last bit of batter to get those! Since this is for my youngest child's 1st birthday, I'm a little disappointed that there won't be 1 for each month of his life, but if the aroma and appearance are any indication, these will be delicious! To be fair, they did rise quite a bit and I suppose I could have eeked out a dozen smaller cupcakes, but next time I'll increase the recipe by half. I can't recommend this for novice or timid bakers, nor for blind followers -- be sure to read through the recipe and compare mentally with your knowledge and experience before beginning.

5 out of 5 stars Love, love, love this cookbook!.......2007-04-10

I received this book as a gift a few years ago and can honestly that I have tried at least 75% of the recipes. I was always intimidated by baking (after numerous basic cake and cookie disasters) and before this book, would never have attempted recipes that appear so challenging. Nigella is a wonderful writer who takes the intimidation factor out completely by using a down-to-earth tone. It feels like you are baking alongside an irreverant, sassy girlfriend!

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

In The Little Book of Hindu Deities, Pixar animator Sanjay Patel brings to life Hinduism's most important gods and goddesses in fun, full-color illustrations, each accompanied by a short, lively profile. The stories of Hindu mythology cover everything from love and jealousy to petty grievances and epic battles, with characters ranging from monsters and demons to noble warriors and divine divas. Find out why Ganesha has an elephant's head (his father cut it off!) and why Kali, the Goddess of Time, is known as “The Black One” (she's a bit goth).

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wah Wah Ramji!.......2007-09-19

This is an entertaining and educational book concerning the Hindu Pantheon. Although it has the appearance of a children's book, this is actually aimed towards a teenage audience and regardless of your age this is just a great introduction and pictorial glossary of the Hindu gods and goddesses. Anyone that's attempted to take on the Bhagavad-Gita or heaven-forbid the entire Mahabharata without having at least a rudimentary knowledge of the Hindu Pantheon will no doubt find themselves confused.

This book isn't written for children as the language is about middle school to high school level, not to mention the many Hindi words the book introduces. The book is easily laid out as an easy resource guide that you can turn to whenever you need a refresher concerning a particular god, goddess, or avatar. Each pair of pages is an illustration of the god or subject being discussed with the description on the other.

Table of contents
10 Introduction
14 Ganesha
19 Trimurti - Hindu Trinity
27 Manifestations of Shiva
39 Mother Goddess (Mahadevi)
52 Ten Avatars of Vishnu
74 Hindu Epics
83 Demigods
102 Nine Planets
123 Animal Gods
132 Chronology of Creation

The 'Samurai Jack' style illustrations are well done and add a personality that is easy to identify with. Using this book will add a element of fun to your studies of Hindu literature or perhaps just help you to know just what the heck they are always talking about in those Bollywood movies. Whatever your purpose, the only time you will be disappointed with this book is when you turn the last page.

5 out of 5 stars best living room book ever ;-).......2007-08-17

Everyone that comes to my place falls in love with this little book, children, adults and "even" hindus, we always have a great time going through the wonderful illustrations and reading it aloud.

I sometimes think of keeping a spare one at home to lend/give/trade/sell.

5 out of 5 stars the best little explaination of a complex religion.......2007-07-16

Looking for an introductory text on the Hindu pantheon I stumbled on _The Little Book of Hindu Dieties_. While a bit corny (the illustrations are reminiscent of "Hello, Kitty" and the stories behind them are geared towards a younger audience), this book is more than an encyclopedic of the major Hindu dieties - it is also explains the Hindi epics Mahabharata (including a separate section on the Baghavad Ghita) and Ramayana in addition to several demigods, the Indian solar system, and animal gods. In short, it is a fabulous introduction to Hinduism's major dieties and literature - quite an achievement, and worthy of 5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Little Book about Anything!.......2007-05-12

Sanjay Patel's illustrations are so amusing. That's the only reason to purchase this books. It helps to play with imagination. Hindu Gods and Godesses are full of symbolism and Sanjay Patel is able to explain a lot of it through his text. Although, the descriptions of the deities can be a little corny, and it is a little iffy - if that's what you want your child's first impression of God. But it is a cute book overall.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic book but the pages are not at all the same quality of the original.......2007-04-10

i would rate this book a 4, almost perfect.
This illustrations in this book are unbelievably beautiful. I bought the original self published book that Sanjay Patel put out which was much smaller.
Here, he expands on it, with many many more pictures, pages, and expanded explanations (stories) of all the deities. I would give the book itself 5 stars, a must have!
My only problem with the book is the quality of the pages. :( It doesn't do his work justice. In the original book, "Little India', the pages were glossy and the colors leaped off the pages, like a coffe table art book or children's storybook.
In this version, the cover is glossy but the pages are matte and coarse, like a paperback novel. It really changes the look of the illustrations, they look muted.
In one way, it reinforces the idea that this is a 'story' book you are reading thru and not just about the pictures but... wow... what a loss, when I compare it to the original. I give it 3 stars for quality.
Unfortunently, I cut up the original when I was pregnant and framed them for my baby's nursery. I bought 2 of this one, to have one for reading and one for framing more prints. These are not the same quality although I'm sure any baby would still be thrilled to read it with mommy and daddy. :)
I hope he releases the other version again.

5 out of 5 stars A very entertaining cookbook.......2007-03-19

This book is full of great recipes but also is very entertaining. The author is very laid back and fun! She takes all the stress out of cooking.

3 out of 5 stars I love Nigella...........2007-03-02

And have used several of the recipes in the book without any problems. I am culinary school trained and find her recipes both creative and tasty. I think it is def worth a second try if you have had issues....

3 out of 5 stars B.B. (Buyer Beware).......2007-01-05

I love Nigella - and no, I am not a stalker! I love her cooking shows, which are fast-paced, fun and very well produced visually. I love her columns, though I always have to read them with considerable delay. I love her books (well at least How To Eat and the object of this review) because they are chock-full of great recipes and wit.

However, as other readers have pointed out, some of the recipes in this book give incorrect amounts for the ingredients, which often results in a big disaster. I have made the blueberry muffins and the orange chocolate cake and they turned out awful - the muffins were not sweet enough and had to be heavily smeared with jam; the cake was inedible, I had to throw it away.

However, I made the banana bread (with cocoa and chocolate chips for my 2.5-year-old twins), the Madeira cake, the spice cake in the Christmas chapter and the rocky road chocolates from the Children chapter, and they all turned out pretty good. I also tried out the white bread recipe shortly after buying the book when it came out, and it was a better recipe than average. Finally, I made the strawberry jam, which was very good too - and very easy. So it's not all bad.

In order to keep track of things, I have begun sticking post-it notes on the recipes that I try out with comments on what can be done to improve them (needs more sugar, never make this recipe again, good bread etc.). I know this can sound like a pain in the neck, but many of the recipes in Nigella's archive are the result of "tweaking" other recipes, changing quantities, adding ingredients, so I feel like I am keeping with the spirit of the book.

4 out of 5 stars buy the hardcover.......2006-12-01

I completely ignored the marketing for this book, not even the television program influenced me to pick it up. I only bought this book and the how to eat book with Feast because of a successful chocolate loaf recipe from her current television program. Domestic Goddess is a good book. I recommend it over Feast which uses a lot of recipes from her past books. I read a recommendation that a cookbook should have at least one good recipe that you like to make repeatedly for it to be a good purchase. I've made one of the easiest recipes in the book, coconut macaroons. It may not be the best recipe in the book but at least it got me started and sometimes it is hard to get me started.

    Book Description

    In the tradition of Celestial Gallery, this unique collection of striking Tibetan-style Mandala paintings of the Goddesses of the Celestial Gallery are presented together for the first time, in this distinctive format. Each work is hand-bound and stands two feet tall, reproduced from the master painter Romio Shrestha and his team of artisan monks, who render postmodern interpretations of an age-old Tibetan artistic tradition. Made from malachite, lapis and marigolds and painted at times with just three hairs of a cat’s tail, these paintings are produced in hauntingly powerful detail. Goddesses depicted include: “the goddesses of the arts” Saraswati; “the Divine Mother” White Tara a protector and preserver; “the Protectress “ Green Tara : “the Dark Goddesses” Palden Lhamo, guardian of the lineage of the Dalai Lamas; and Kali, a wild and uncontrollable consort of Shiva, a devotee of time and keeper of the shadows within ourselves.

    Product Description

    `History: Fiction or Science? Chronology 2` is the second volume of the most explosive and astounding tractate on history ever written - however, every theory it contains, no matter how unorthodox, is backed by rock solid scientific data. The book is easy and pleasant to read; it is well-illustrated, contains hundreds of charts, graphs and illustrations, copies of ancient manuscripts, and countless facts attesting to the falsity of the chronology used nowadays. You will be amazed to discover: - That the chronology universally accepted today and taken for granted is simply wrong; - That ALL methods of dating of ancient sources and artefacts known today are erroneous or non-exact; - That there is not a single document that could be reliably dated earlier than the XIth century; The Author refers to the Middle Ages as the “Antiquity” and proves mutual superimposition of the Second and the Third Roman Empire, both of which become identified as the respective kingdoms of Israel and Judah. Furthermore, he asserts that the famous reform of the Occidental Church in the XI century by “Pope Gregory Hildebrand” was the reflection of the XII century reforms of Byzantine emperor Andronicus who in his turn identifies with Jesus Christ. The Trojan war counted by Homer happened only as late as of the XIII century A.D. and the great poet actually lived in XIV century A.D. No stone in history of Antiquity is left unturned. Literally. This book is the beginning of a major correction to the chronology we live with.

    I don't care what other people say of this book. Those affirmig it's fake, they hadn't ever read it. Or have some special reasons to do so. "Living is easy with eyes closed, misunderstanding all you see..." This book won't make you feel comfortable. It'll make you feel free. It'll make you feel you're "not the only one" to feel you'd been lied to for centuries.

    Here is a serie of books which turns "the whole world" upside down. I learned a lot of it and I hope that a new book from A.T. Fomenko will follow very quick. A absolute must for everybody who is interested in history or even a little bit from it.

    5 out of 5 stars Prescient St Augustine?.......2006-02-05

    We can so far divide the New Chronology into the following three parts:

    a) The verifiable theory that proves consensual chronology wrong with the aid of astronomy, statistics and mathematics;

    b) The new chronology hypothesis based on a new understanding of known historical facts and the most likely logical explanation of the most obvious inconsistencies inherent in the official version of history;

    c) The history conjectures, that is experimental historical reconstructions based on assumptions that the authors believe to make sense in the light of their research and linguistic parallels - void of ironclad factual support to date.

    Fomenko's theory complies with the most rigid scientific standards as a whole:

    It gives a coherent explanation of what we already know.

    - It is consistent: independent lines of inquiry all lead to the same conclusion.

    - The predictions it makes are confirmed empirically.

    Fomenko goes by the following axioms:

    - Chronology is the basis of history;

    - Human evolution has always been linear, gradual and irreversible;

    - The "cyclic" nature of human civilization is a myth, likewise all the gaps, duplicates, "dark ages" and "renaissances" that we know from consensual history;

    - The accumulation of geographical knowledge as reflected in cartography is a gradual and irreversible process;

    - The chronological distance between a given manuscript and the events described therein is proportional to the amount of distortions it contains;

    - There is no "useless" information in authentic ancient sources.

    Why the mainstream historians do not shower mathematician Academician Dr.Prof Fomenko with thanks and laurels?

    The Russians:

    Because Fomenko asserts that there was no such thing as the Tartar and Mongol invasion followed by three centuries of slavery, providing a formidable body of documental evidence to prove his assertion. The so-called "Tartars and Mongols" were the actual ancestors of the modern Russians, living in a bilingual state with Arabic spoken as freely as Russian. The ancient Russian state was governed by a double structure of civil and military authorities. The hordes were actually professional armies with a tradition of lifelong conscription (the recruitment being the so-called "blood tax"). Their "invasions" were punitive operations against the regions that attempted tax evasion. Fomenko proves that Russian history as we know it today is a blatant forgery concocted by a host of German scientists brought to Russia by the usurper dynasty of the Romanovs, whose ascension to the throne was the result of coup d'état, charged with the mission of making their reign look legitimate. Fomenko proves Ivan the Terrible to be a collation of four rulers, no less. They represented the two rival dynasties - the legitimate rulers and the ambitious upstarts. The winner took it all! Over some 30 years of controversy, Russian historians have made a most remarkable transition - they were initially accusing the young mathematician Fomenko of anticommunist dissident activity and attempts to deface the historical legacy of Soviet Russia; nowadays the middle-aged mathematician is accused of adhering to "pro-communist Russian nationalism" and defacing the proud historical legacy of Great Russia.

    The Westerners:

    Because Fomenko blows consensual Russian history to smithereens, successfully removing a crucial cornerstone from underneath the otherwise impeccable edifice of World History. Fomenko adds insult to injury, wiping out one by one the Ancient Rome (the foundation of Rome in Italy is dated to the XIV century A. D.), the Ancient Greece and its numerous poleis, which he identifies as the mediaeval crusader settlements on the territory of Greece, and the Ancient Egypt (the pyramids of Giza become dated to the XI-XV century A. D. and identified as the royal cemetery of the Global "Mongolian" Empire, no less). The civilization of the Ancient Egypt is irrefutably dated to the XII-XV century A. D. with the aid of the ancient Egyptian horoscopes cut in stone. He was the first one to decipher and date all such horoscopes, coming up with mediaeval dates in every case. English historians rage at the suggestion that the history of Ancient England was de facto a Byzantine import transplanted to the English soil by the fugitive Byzantine nobility. To reward the English historians who consider themselves the true scribes of World History, the cover of the present book portrays Tintoretto's Jesus Christ crucified on the Big Ben.

    The Chinese:

    Because Fomenko wipes out the Ancient History of China outright. No such thing. Full point. The compilation of the so-called Ancient Chinese History is reliably datable to the XVII-XVIII century only. It is perfectly recognizable as the Ancient European history, reworked and transcribed in hieroglyphs as yet another historical transplantation, this time performed on the Chinese soil by the loving Jesuit hands. The Chinese are the next in line to go berserk. Chinese history is inevitably bound to get both more ancient and more eventful, proportionally to the growing involvement of China in the world affairs. Chinese historians will keep on finding valid proof of prehistoric Chinese spaceflights until the Politburo orders them to shut up.

    The Arabs:

    Too bad. Islam with all its key figures is datable to XV-XVI century A. D. Arabic historians may find consolation in the crucial historical role of the Ottoman Empire in the XVI-XVII century. The trouble is that this empire was initially a Christian state, with Hagia Sophia identifiable as Temple of Solomon, according to Fomenko! We can only guess if the acquisition of Alexander the Great (a Macedonian and a Christian) as the founder of the Muslim World Empire will make Fomenko's theories more acceptable to the Arabic mainstream. He certainly does not spare any holy cows at all, claiming The Stone of Qa'Aba in Mecca to contain the lost Arch of the Covenant.

    The Divinity:

    Despite of reiterated statement that his theory is all about chronology and not Religion, Fomenko stirs up a whole condominium of wasp nests. His collection of anathemas, fatwa, and other condemnations from all parties concerned is already considerable. Little wonder, considering that the history of religions à la Fomenko looks as follows: the pre-Christian period (before the XI century and JC), Bacchic Christianity (XI-XII century, before and after JC), JC Christianity (XII-XVI century) and its subsequent mutations into Orthodox Christianity, the Catholicism, Islam, Buddhism, and so on.

    According to Fomenko we know strictly NOTHING about the events that predate the X century A. D.

    St Augustin was prescient when he spoke unto us: "be wary of mathematicians, particularly when they speak the truth."

    4 out of 5 stars Something of a disappointment.......2005-09-09

    After having read the first volume of this expected series of 7 volumes I was triggered by the thesis of these authors that ancient Greek and Roman history did in fact take place in the Middle Ages. So I started studying medieval history of the Middle East - also known as Islamic history - to find out if the opponents of the ancient Greeks and Romans - the Acheamenid Persians, Sassanids, Scythians, Egyptians, etc. - also have their duplicates in medieval history. My search was disappointing: none of the many medieval Islamic dynasties seemed to correspond to the ancient middle eastern rulers.

    However, I did find a close correspondence between Herodotus' Persian kings and medieval events:

    - the defeat and capture of an Anatolian king - the Lydian Croesus - by the Persian conqueror Cyrus is identical to the defeat and capture of another Anatolian king - sultan Bayezid - by the Asian/Mongol conqueror Tamerlane;
    - the Persian conquest of Egypt by the cruel tyrant Cambyses reds almost exactly as the Ottoman conquest of Egypt by Selim the Grim (note the nickname!);
    - Darius the Lawgiver of the Persian Empire looks very much alike to Sulayman the Magnificent, the Lawgiver in Islamic history;
    - Xerxes, whose main claim to fame is to be defeated by the Greeks at the naval battle of Salamis, looks like Selim II (the Sot) whose main claim to fame is to be defeated by a Spanish-Italian alliance at the naval battle of Lepanto.

    I should have expected Fomenko et al. to arrive at similar conclusions, however, they claim that the Persian kings are the alter egos of the Angevin kings of Sicily whose biographies do not contain the exploits of the Persian kings.

    The similiarities I indicate lead to the conclusion that Herodotus must have written his Histories at the close of the 16th century. But this is extremely late, given that Herodotus is "the Father of History", so therefore all other "ancient" histories must have been fabricated even later. Yet, the founders of modern chronology - Scaliger and Petavius - laid their foundations also at the close of the 16th century and had the full corpus of ancient histories already at their disposal.

    It seems to me that Fomenko has to address these inconsistencies, maybe in the forthcoming 5 volumes?

    Another critique of their book is that the correspondencies between different rulers are often based on a superficial comparison of the biographies; upon a more thorough comparison many details appear that do not correspond at all.

    Finally, the authors rely heavily on the works of Gregorovius (1821-1891!!) - his medieval histories of Rome and Athens - as the source of medieval history; these works are - at least in the West - hoplessly outdated and have been superceded by more up-to-date works (for instance, Julius Norwich's trilogy on Byzantine history is not even cited).

    5 out of 5 stars Romulus courts Helen, Paris founds Rome, Moses goes to Troy.........2005-07-30

    If you agree with Fomenko that Roman chronology is basically the foundation of the entire edifice of global chronology; you would also certainly agree that despite its numerous gaps and inconsistencies, Roman history is the best-documented field of ancient history, and thus a reference scale. But how well is the actual date of the Eternal City's foundation known?

    Firstly, Rome is supposed to have been founded by the Trojans who had to flee after the fall of Troy. Some claim Rome to have been founded by Aeneas and Ulysses shortly after Troy had fallen; others are of the opinion that there was an entire dynasty that ruled for 500 years between the fall of Troy and the foundation of Rome.

    Well, that's just an innocent 500 years long misunderstanding compared with what heretic Fomenko says, asserts, proves in his second volume: Second Roman Empire, Third Roman Empire, Biblical Kingdom of Israel, Biblical Kingdom of Judah, Holy Roman Empire are stories about basically same events, written from different points of view at different times. The underlying events have actually taken place during xii-xv cy. These histories have been written and perfected by multitude of highly talented humanist and clerical writers of xiii-xvi cy disguised as "ancients" with glorious names like Homer, Pluto, Thucydides etc..Chronology 2.0 beta..

    Historians are kindly invited to report the bugs.

    Book Description

    Shows how dance, the highest expression of spirituality in cultures and traditions all over the world, is being integrated into the lives of women today

    • The first book to explore women's spiritual expression--women's ways--through a study of dance

    • Investigates how dance came to be excluded from worship, and reveals how dance is once again being brought into spiritual practices

    • Includes resources for further instruction in sacred dance

    Today we primarily think of dance as a form of entertainment or as a way to exercise or socialize. There was a time, however, when dance was considered the way to commune with the divine, a part of life's journey, celebrating the seasons and rhythms of the year and the rhythms of our lives. Dance is a language that reunites the body, mind, and soul. While the role of women's sacred dance was most valued in goddess-worshipping cultures where women served as priestesses and healers, dance was once an integral part of religious ritual and ceremonial expression in cultures all over the world, including Judaism and Christianity. In this book the author investigates how dance came to be excluded from worship and reveals how dance is once again being integrated into spiritual practices.

    Sacred Woman, Sacred Dance is the first book to explore women's spiritual expression--women's ways--through a study of dance. It describes sacred circles, birth rituals, ecstatic dances, and dances of loss and grief (in groups and individually) that allow women to integrate the movements of faith, healing, and power into their daily life.

    Customer Reviews:

    2 out of 5 stars Quite superficial.......2007-06-26

    I do not want to talk about how the author handled all other "sacred dances", but, since I am well-familiar with the Indian classical dance, I do have a clear impression that the author, although apparently quite intellectual, has a very superficial (typical of a western rationalistic mind) idea of what the real classical Indian dance practices are about, and has no idea at all of what is Natya Yoga.

    5 out of 5 stars more to Dance than meets the eye ..........2006-05-26

    This book offers deeply insightful information regarding the history and symbolism of dance (mostly folkloric and Oriental, not ballet) as it relates to femininity and by extension, feminism in the spiritual, nonpolitical sense of a free self-expression.

    The entire book is exceptional and engrossing, but I particularly enjoyed the chapter about the history of percussion/drumming, not only musical history but spiritual, religious, and psychological history as well. The chapter about trance dancing is very informative also, even alluring in its descriptions.

    The book's many pictures are stunning (as is the author herself), and certainly every picture enhances already intriguing text.

    My favorite picture is a photograph of Russian dancer Vera Morova (who gave up ballet to pursue Oriental dance) in a pose from her Snake Dance - the most exotic costuming and form imaginable!

    A generous resource guide, notes section, and bibliography conclude the book.

    5 out of 5 stars Woman Dance a renewal of sacredness.......2005-08-29

    This book is very informative and wonderfully and intelligently written. I recommend it to any one that is interested in connecting with the ancient art of sacred movement. The illustrations are beautiful. It is wonderful to read books that are embracing the sacredness of the woman! Its time for women to unite and bring peace back into this world..This book is a great place to begin in understanding the importance of this!

    5 out of 5 stars Woman Dance!.......2004-01-07

    This is a wonderful book for any woman who is searching to uncover her own hidden "feminine" gifts thorough dance, or for one who is searching out all woman history to re-build her own. Dance has been changed through out the centuries but the core is still present.
    A book that will expand the beginners understanding of how dance is connected to the spiritual. Much substance.

    4 out of 5 stars Spiritual Dance.......2003-03-12

    This book has an unusual approach to the history of dance. It has lovely photos/illustrations, and thorough notations throughout. I recommend ot for its unique approach to dance, but not for its (sometimes suspect) history. It's an interesting book, with a lot of information.

    I can see using this book as a form of meditation I suppose that's as spiritual as you want it to be. There are interesting ideas here, and women who are exploring the meaning and origin of dance will probably find it a good read. As women's studies (which is one of the subjects this book falls into), it's a little lacking. She doesn't really provide enough hard evidence with some of her theories and interpretations to consider this a scholarly work. Women who are interested in the goddess will also find value in this book.

    I recommend it as an interesting read, as long as the reader understands that much of what she writes is an interpretation of history, and cobbled together from whatever sources were available. Since much of women's history was never written, interpretation is necessary, of course, but I don't know how much is interpretation and how much is embellishment.

      Book Description

      The Indian Buddhist world abounds with goddesses--voluptuous tree spirits, maternal nurturers, potent healers and protectors, transcendent wisdom figures, cosmic mothers of liberation, and dancing female Buddhas. Despite their importance in Buddhist thought and practice, these female deities have received relatively little scholarly attention, and no comprehensive study of the female pantheon has been available. Buddhist Goddesses of India is the essential and definitive guide to divinities that, as Miranda Shaw writes, "operate from transcendent planes of bliss and awareness for as long as their presence may benefit living beings."

      Beautifully illustrated, the book chronicles the histories, legends, and artistic portrayals of nineteen goddesses and several related human figures and texts. Drawing on a sweeping range of material, from devotional poetry and meditation manuals to rituals and artistic images, Shaw reveals the character, powers, and practice traditions of the female divinities. Interpretations of intriguing traits such as body color, stance, hairstyle, clothing, jewelry, hand gestures, and handheld objects lend deep insight into the symbolism and roles of each goddess.

      In addition to being a comprehensive reference, this book traces the fascinating history of these goddesses as they evolved through the early, Mahayana, and Tantric movements in India and found a place in the pantheons of Tibet and Nepal.

Each chapter builds on premises developed by preceding chapters (so if your interested in using this as a resource for a particular time period, it is beneficial to read the preceding chapters as well.) This is less a feminist tract than an assay about non-Christian antecedents to Marian idolization and modern reconciliation with societal (past and present) currents. Though written in easily accessible language, with 688 pages of text and illustrations, the non-academic may find themselves bogged down somewhere in the middle. All illustrations are in black-and-white (if color is a consideration in your research, you may need to consult other resources for better illustrations.)

      5 out of 5 stars How did things get to be the way they are?.......2007-02-21

      A remarkable book that every woman should read .
      It will help you to understand that there was something other in human history besides conquest , war, and various forms of domination of the weak by the strong. Before the Patriarchy there was a period of 25 thousand years of much progress and development without huge wars.
      I gained an understanding of what has happened to our idea of ourselves and the way it has shaped our actions.
      The book is not a polemic like this review , it is a wonderfully written , considered history of the Godess archtype . It`s profusely illustrated and documented . A great bibliography is provided for further reading

      5 out of 5 stars One of the Best Books Available on the Goddess.......2006-08-11

      Simply put, this is one of the best books out there on the Many-Named Goddess. The two authors spent over ten years researching and writing this book and it shows. The book traces the evolution of the Divine Feminine from Inanna, to Ishtar, to Isis, to Gaia, to Athena, to Aphrodite, to Cybele, to Sophia and more. Excellent resource for both experts and amateurs.

      As for the blissfully ignorant reviewer who states that matriarchical cultures are feminist pseudo-history, I challenge them to find one reputable scholar/archaeologist who believes otherwise. (By 'reputable scholar/archaeologist' I mean someone who isn't going to try to convince me that God made the world in six literal days...)

      Book Description

      The Book of Goddesses draws inspiration from the many goddesses honored throughout history in various cultures around the globe. This lavishly illustrated, greatly expanded 10th Anniversary Edition of Kris Waldherr's beloved classic pays homage to 100 of these revered women (74 more than the original edition), and is structured around the feminine rites of passage: Beginnings, Love, Motherhood, Creativity, Strength, and Transformation. These goddess stories tell of women's innate divinity, dignity, and potency—their ability to create life from their bodies, their strength of character, their magic.

      This visually stunning book, by an author/illustrator with an enormous fan base, is a testament to the power, passion, wisdom, and beauty of women everywhere, in all stages of life.

      5 out of 5 stars Captivating, delightful, and enriching: a book to treasure.......2007-03-01

      Prepare to be beguiled. This is not an ordinary book.

      Finding it was a happy accident while I was researching artistic responses to the myth of Persephone and Demeter. I knew Kris Waldherr had written a children's book about Persephone ('Persephone and the Pomegranate'), but it was out of print and had become a hard-to-find collector's item. So I turned to this more recent book of hers instead, and was captivated by it.

      The book is designed as a complete whole, from its richly coloured endpapers with their jewel-like illustrations through to the lovely organic patterns of flowers, leaves, shells, rocks, birds and trees that run along the outer border of every page. Open it anywhere, and you'll see straight away that each double-page spread has been arranged with great care and sensitivity. Pictures are creatively balanced with text in a deeply satisfying way, from the evocative little vignettes inserted among the letterpress that give the words space to breathe, to the large richly coloured full-page illustrations. It doesn't matter if you think you're not interested in goddesses, and you don't have to be a woman to enjoy it; the book is so lovely that it will entice you in. Before you know where you are, you'll be immersed in the world of divine feminine archetypes that Kris Waldherr has laid before you.

      This book is a wonderful demonstration of what can be achieved when an author/artist/designer has the inspiration, talent and vision to understand the potential of modern book production techniques, and take full advantage of them. 'Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful', advised William Morris. The Book of Goddesses fits both criteria, and here's the wonder: anyone can afford to buy one.

      5 out of 5 stars Celestially life enhancing!.......2005-09-08

      Love everything Kris Waldherr does! Her artistic abilities shine in this loveliest of presentations. A dramatic and heartfelt sense of timing from those whose stories have deeply touched all of our lives through the mediums. It has become my first favorite deck, the second being the Goddesses.

      5 out of 5 stars no title.......2003-02-05

      I've never been much of a mythology fan, but after bringing this book home from the library to do research on Aphrodite/Venus for a school project, I found myself reading every godess's story over and over again. The paintings are gorgeous and the written part is actually interesting. I never thought Diana, Athena, and Chang O could actually capture my imagination, but they did. Each godess is beautiful and unique in her own way. Kris Waldherr makes them each become the perfect role model for every type of girl. :-) -Willow

      5 out of 5 stars Buy two -- one for you, one for a friend!.......2001-12-18

      This book is a lovely work of art! A perfect "coffee table" book or as an introduction for young people to different cultures and ways of seeing the world, The Book of Goddesses will open your mind and expand your consciousness. "My house is full of many mansions," and "many roads, one journey," come to mind as a way to describe the concepts that unfold as the beautiful artwork and simple text in two pages describes each goddess, where she is from, and what she represents. We cannot understand the world we live in if we continue to dismiss or minimize the cultures in which it is rooted. This may be a "radical" concept, but it is an important concept to understand.

      This book would make a great gift.

      5 out of 5 stars Beautiful artwork, Informative cross-cultural mythology.......2000-03-16

      This book contains stunning watercolor pictures of goddesses derived from different cultures and eras...an absolute must-read. After taking a Greek Goddesses religion class in college, I decided to buy this book out of curiosity. I was pleasantly surprised to learn that this book encompasses Goddess mythology from all over the world...as opposed to a sole "Greek" focus, Japanese, Chinese, Roman, Norse, Welsh, Egyptian, Indian, African, Hawaiian, Mexican, Slavic, Cuban, and Celtic goddesses are all contained in this book. Kris Waldherr displays immense talent through her detailed and well-researched stories and imaginative portrayals of each Goddess. This book is very inspiring...a great read for any child's collection, and a definite 'keeper' in my own collection.
