Customer Reviews:
Good book for a quick read........2007-09-15
"Hot Shot" is a good romance book, fast read and I would recommend this book to anyone who likes to read these kinds of books. I haven't read this author before and intend to buy more of her books.
Not the SEP I'm used to reading.......2007-01-21
Hot Shot is an interesting book. However, if you are looking for a funny romantic novel, this isn't it. I would not even categorize Hot Shot as a romance novel. It's a book about a woman's journey to self awareness and self appreciation. The romance is secondary to the story.
It's obvious that SEP put a lot of effort into researching the back story, and I really wanted to like this book. However, I thought there were too many characters and side-stories, disrupting the pace of the book. I've read over 10 of SEP's novels and this is the first one I did not really enjoy.
With that said, this book is still better than some of the formulaic romance novels out there. I wavered back and forth between giving this book 2 or 3 stars. I gave it 2 stars because I didn't find the story compellinge enough, and it took me awhile to get through the book.
Not into tecnology,but a must read.......2006-07-19
I'm not into technology, computers or even how it all got started but I really loved this book. I loved the way Susannah's character evolved from being an insecure person to running a business empire. From the beginning Mitch was my favorite of the male characters, I could relate to his suffering and the strength it takes to start over in live. The chemistry between all the characters was great. Paige and Yank's story was a very nice surprise. All in all I have loved every single book that SEP has written.
Interesting Story; Outstanding Characters.......2005-10-17
Great story with the dawn of the computer age as a background. Susannah Faulconer is a complex character and the circumstances surrounding her childhood and early adult life formulate the events of a fantastic plot. I really enjoyed watching her grow into a strong, independent business woman. Since I do not want to give the story away, but I do want to stress the great storyline, suffice it to say, "Hot Shot" is a well-written story centered on the growth - personally, professionally and romantically of a woman in a man's business world in the late seventies, early 80's. The character of Susannah Faulconer is supported by a cast of complex individuals; her half-sister, Paige and their sibling rivalry, her staunch fiancee, Cal, Sam, Mitch and who could ever forget the computer wiz of the century, Yank. If you enjoy fiction, romance, and mystery, centered around the corporate world, you will really want to read "Hot Shot."
A real story of real women !.......2005-09-16
I had my doubts about this novel with the beginning the computer era as the background story. I soon started to have a vested interest in the characters and enjoyed every last page. Susannah is the main character who runs away from her society wedding on the back of Harley. Susannah finds love, self-esteem, friendship, solves a mystery and most of all finds herself. I would recommend this book and I would also suggest `The Villa' by Nora Roberts's a similar flavor.

Uggh!.......2006-11-28
Sit down, kick back, and get plastered while you read this book.

Charles Beard basic history of U.S.,Constitution,etc.Hendrick Van Loon,AMERICA,Story of Mankind,,Georgraphy, etc could help your brain.Everyone should be required to know the constitution, bill of rights, pleg to the flag, and their history.Education was better before 1960.Multiculturallism has diluted our culture. We would not be americans if not for those who fought for our rights. The corporats never gave anything to the people.
You do not have to believe in god to believe in the ten commandment,or to practice them. The jews believe in ten commandments, probably for them only in many cases.Man has to get along with man or there is nucleur war.Charging excessive interest is not christian,or moslem. No wonder the corporat want to do away with religion. It is true that religion is used as a means to control, and has caused much death, yet the ten commandments do not advocate 666.For robuts who think if there is not a god then I can do anything I want. They should consider prison, hatred, might is right, and kill everyone to keep power. You see where we are at today.
Rossi mentions immigration in this book. She states that many countries are opposed to it.Free Trade and Immigration are the cause of the down fall of nations. You can vote out those who support free trade and immigration. The constitution is hated by the corporat as it is blowback,it is blocking there way to the New World Order,Globalism,no borders all third world.KING
There is no energy shortage, there is alternative energy. Our system is artificial a monopoly of the rich,a dead horse.
You can control the nation by stopping all immigration.Legislate to regulate free trade as soon as we change government. No insiders in third party, create after we change government by the vote,or ask the military to enforce the constitution, but high level military who are corporat could not be involved. We must take back our country and our idenity as the american people who created this country.American citizens who are the majority, the democratic way,get rid of electorial college,No electric voting, they have already cheated.
Criminals run our country along with all those who benefit from ripping off the ROBUTS,they are all the same. How did you let these fools sellout our nation.Any cost is worth our freedom. We can ration, they did in world war 11.How could there be an energy shortage. The corporat is expanding.Brooks Adams Law of Civilization and decay. The bankers are relentless they will centralize the governments, the E.U. and north america, and then desentergrate. They are inferior, they must be stopped.I read two books with different conclusions in Adams book Law.The one I remember is the man on the white horse, the military may be only solution,we may have been Robuts to long,we have to fight to the death, better dead than slave.Take our nation back, save america.STOP IMMIGRATION.Augustus will come again,he will arrive in near future. The Old good boy clubs will not stop him,you cannot fool all the people all the time. Those boys are international and in every government.
Russia has enough nuclear weapons to blow up the world many times over. They do not want unlimited immigration. They want to keep their idenity and culture. The west tried to eat them alive after the fall.Putin has fought the mafia and western capitalist.Russia may become the last hope for western culture.
They want demodratic socialism which is dirty word in america. The corporat cannot control everything. They took back the oil company.one in jail one they want in Israel,Isarel will not allow extradition, gods law.Iran,Russia,China,Pakistan,North Korea, south america???WW111

Stop immigration, stop Free Trade, vote out the present government period.
Good idea and well organized, but too many errors.......2006-05-27
I bought this book last year because I really liked the concept - a sort of brief guide to the world for Americans. Many of us, myself included, are lacking a good understanding of other parts of the world. And we rely too much on the dominant media to "educate" us on the facts, conditions and histories of countries that are important or where problems make them a place to be concerned about.
That said, this book gets a mixed review from me because it does well in some areas and poorly in others.
What I liked:
It's organized well - starting with the places that are "ticking" time bombs and gradually working down the ratings of volatility to the nations that are "talkers" (as opposed to "doers" I suppose). That concept groups countries with similar problems, outlooks, histories, etc. near each other in the book. Because so many issues tend to cross national boundaries it makes it easy to see how the same situation developed or has been addressed in neighboring places.
It's not a big book, especially since the topic is the world, and so it has to boil down the issues and histories into some brief points. For the most part the author does a good job of identifying what is really important to know.
What I didn't like:
Some of the synopses are so brief as to not be very useful.
Inaccuracies were too common. Both my sons take honors level history classes and while reading this book they complained of statements that they thought were wrong. We sat down together and researched the points that they found fault with - and the boys were on the money. Much of it has to do with how brief some of the author's comments are - it resulted in over simplification of some complex subjects that came across as misleading. Not exactly wrong, but if you are familiar with the subject being discussed you would likely shake your head and say "that's really not an accurate way to describe the facts."
There were several points on which the author just got the important facts wrong. For example, in the section on Somalia on page 143 there is a box containing one very long paragraph that describes what is commonly known as the "Battle of Mogadishu". Among the things the author got wrong was an allusion that warlord Mohamed Farrah Aidid might have been tipped off about the US operation by his son who was a Marine "supposedly helping out the U.S. with translation." Aidid's son Hussein Farrah Aydid was a Marine Reservist and had been sent to Somalia to translate and serve as a liaison with his father. However, that had only lasted for three weeks and the younger Aydid had been back at his job the City of West Covina engineering department, updating water maps, counting cars in traffic, etc. for more than ten months before the battle took place.
The same section is full of other blatant errors, some of which are minor - "the image of a dead Marine being dragged through the streets..." is inaccurate because there were no Marines present in Somalia or participating in the operation. The Marines had operated in country earlier, and from time to time there were some Marine units offshore, but not for the events described by the author.
Some are significant errors. Such as the author's statement that the Somali militia forces brought down two Blackhawk helicopters using "land-to-air missiles..." Inaccurate because the Somali's actually used Soviet era Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs) which are relatively unsophisticated weapons compared to ground to air missiles. The realization that a Blackhawk was susceptible to incapacitating damage by something as simple and cheap as an RPG was something of a shock. That is an important point. Perhaps more importantly, it is a unproven but widely held belief that Al Qaeda was responsible for discovering this weakness and providing slightly modified RPGs and training to the Somalis in an effort to hurt and embarrass the U.S. The author failed to mention that and it would seem important considering the importance given in other parts of the book to Al Qaeda and terrorism in general.
The same paragraph has inaccurate statements about the goal of the mission that sparked the battle and the basic facts of when and how elements were introduced into the operation and what role they played.
Others have commented on what appears to be the interjection of politically motivated bias on the author's part. It was apparent when I saw it, slightly annoying (just give me the facts and let me make up my own mind about how I feel about what I've learned) but I learned to just discount it and skip past it.
Conclusion:
A darn good idea and well organized, but too skimpy on details in some parts and too many major errors to be trusted. That last part was the kiss of death for the book as far as I'm concerned. If I can find that many blatant errors in one paragraph I have no confidence in anything else I read. I might give it another half star if Amazon would let me, but not a full three stars.
Basic primer for the uneducated masses.......2006-02-04
Hey, I liked the book- its written simply, with some humor, and it punches the major points. In Depth analysis it isn't and wasn't meant to be, but let's face it, most Americans don't want any in depth analysis of world issues- heck, half of them can't point out the Pacific Ocean. This will have to do for those folks. It hits the lowlights and highlights, gives some easy to read charts and maps, and while simplistic- covers enough for the USA TODAY types who want the picture, map, and easy bullet list.
Frankly, I think this book is a necessity for schools- or something like it- it may be the only way for kids to find Africa on the map or understand between Hutus and Tutsis.
not bad but def. left of center.......2005-10-21
I actually own this book and for some reason never thought about it being biased until I delved into topics I know more about than she does apparently. I could go into detail about it but won't bother.
She tends state her opinions as fact and it is obvious that she takes a "blame America first" attitude; almost as if she is taking the standpoint of somebody who lives in Europe who wants to placate her European friends by showing she is subtly embarrassed to be American.
The world is much more complex than she would have you believe, and she is by no means a well read diplomat. I mean c'mon she encourages people to read the BBC. I will credit her with her endorsement of the Economist though, I believe that is a very fair and balanced magazine.
Book Description
Known as the "Forgotten War," the Korean War heralded a new era of warfare--one where countries from around the world struggled over the fate of a relatively small peninsula jutting into the Sea of Japan. Between 1950 and 1953, more than fifty thousand Americans gave their lives in pursuit of democracy for the Korean people.
The Korean War was also the proving ground for post-World War II aviation, when the first generation of jet aircraft took to the skies to tangle in deadly combat. It was the battlefield of Sabres and MiGs, American Hot Shots and Communist Honchos. And more than ever before, control of the skies meant victory or failure in the ground war raging below.
Now, fifty years after the war's outbreak, Hot Shots captures the voices of the original top guns, the pilots who flew Mustangs, Sabres, and Shooting Stars and confronted a superior number of enemy aircraft. Among the men who tell their stories are Lieutenant Colonel Duane E. "Bud" Biteman, one of the first fliers in the war; Lieutenant General Frederick "Boots" Blesse, double ace who led efforts to refine tactical training for the new jet pilots; Colonel Cecil Foster, who fought in one of the longest-running air-to-air jet encounters; and Colonel Harold Fischer, a double-ace flier who was captured behind enemy lines and held as a POW until 1955, two years after the official end of the war.
Editors Chancey and Forstchen combine these compelling firsthand accounts with dozens of never-before-published photographs of air force pilots at work, as well as a history of the major events of the war. Hot Shots brings to vivid life the risk, dedication, and bravery of these forgotten heroes. May their sacrifice not be in vain.
Customer Reviews:
Very Interesting Book........2007-03-25
I dont come across books about the Korean air war very often, so I grabbed this one when I saw it. I like it.
My criteria for books is simple. The subject has to be interesting, the writing has to be excellent, and I do not want any implausible nonsense or blatant lies ruining the reading experience.
This book satisfies all my demands.
But readers need to understand that this book is oral history NOT academic scholarship. Oral history is the candy sprinkles and cherry and fudge topping of history. Historians use oral history to bring a scholastic book to life. This book isnt a reference source. It's about common warriors confronting the unknown within the fog of war. That's what warriors do.
Not Enough "Hot Shots".......2001-05-12
I was very disappointed in the coverage of the USAF role in Korea. This was the first time that jet battled jet in armed combat... and yet at least a third of the book centered on the P-51's role. F-84's were mentioned, but not one '84 pilot was included. And the final third of the book was focused on a pilot who was shot down and held captive 'til long after hostilities ended. It was a story of bravery and loneliness, but it wasn't the way to end the book and could have benefitted from a great deal of editing.
Excellent Reading!.......2001-04-18
I'll make it short and sweet: Excellent reading. For anyone interested in flight. Lots of stories straight from the pilots.
The Danger of Oral History.......2000-08-09
As a former Department of the Air Force historian, I know full well the values and dangers of oral history. The supreme value of oral history is that it comes straight from primary sources: those who actually witnessed historical events. The supreme danger is that these accounts sometimes can involve faulty recollections or a lack of understanding of broader events. Yet, actually having written accounts based from oral interviews, I know that with proper editing and a broad scope of interview subjects, you can come up with a fascinating account.
Sadly, Hot Shots by Chancey and Forstchen falls short of the mark. This book is marketed as being "An Oral History of Air Force Combat Pilots of the Korean War." However, it is apparent from the accounts in the book that the editors interviewed a limited number and scope of pilots. The book is far too slanted towards the accounts of F-51 Mustang pilots for it to be considered a comprehensive oral history of ALL Air Force combat pilots. For instance, F-84 fighter-bombers were heavily engaged in Korea, but they get scant mention in this book.
The editors do a good job of introducing individual points of the war with background information. Sadly, however, several background chapters do not include any interviews from those periods! In addition, the editors continue to make points over and over: the horrific UN withdrawal after the Chinese invasion; American POWs being left behind at war's end. These points are valid, but they need not be repeated after their first mention. Instead of an oral history, the book seemed to become the editors' take on the Korean War.
The book itself is at its strongest when the actual pilots give their accounts.
Hot Shots is a good book for the general public with a passing interest in military history, but professional military historians will probably find little new here. Revelations of Soviet pilots flying over Mig Alley and the U.S. Navy's air combat against the Russians near Vladivostok were common knowledge amongst the Air Force historical community, at least as far back as 1996.

Read it all and it's good.......2000-07-26
I had the pleasure of reading Hot Shots, and was amazed the find a rather strange and vague negative review. I suspect that there is more to the ameteur revviewer's attitude than the he admits, jealousy or the intent ot write his own book perhaps? Mr. Dargon's review is full of innuendo and complaints with no actual details. I found Hot Shots excellent and checked several of the "facts" in the first chapter with the official history of war and they all jive. Moreover the firsthand accounts gave me insight and were exciting to read. If you want to understand what real flying was before all the technology, but at jet speeds. read this book. It is a very good thing that someone was able to put it together while the first 'hot shots", when that meant what it says, are still alive. Well written and a unique inside look at the first modern air combats.
Book Description
Detective Franke Daniels hates her life -- well, what's left of it. After a romance with the wrong man goes bad, the tough Atlanta police detective finds herself "transferred" to Nowhere, U.S.A., Purdyville, South Carolina, is tantamount to a sentence of death by boredom for the street-smart chain-smoking cop. The crime rate here is beyond low . . . Almost as low as Frankie's self esteem.
When Frankie arrives to find her rental home in flames, she proceeds to chew out one of the locals -- only to realize she's just told off her new boss, the annoyingly gorgeous and smug Sheriff Matt Webber. But Matt is more intrigued than angry at his new deputy. He suspects life in Purdyville is going to get very interesting indeed, especially after he watches her take down the local tough guy in two seconds flat. Even the crime rate seems to have risen to the occasion. But underneath that tough-cookie exterior: Matt's pretty sure Frankie's got a soft spot . . . he just hopes it's for him.

If your thinking about buying this book.....don't!.......2006-08-09
This is my first review on Amazon. I've ordered a lot of books and have loved most of them but I've never taken the time to post a review. Well, after starting & stopping (over & over again) reading this book I decided to make the time. This is one of the worst books I've read in a long time. Similiar to the reviewer above, I found "Hot Shot" labored and just plain boring. I've attempted to "get into" the story for the last two weeks but just can't find any enjoyment with either Frankie or Matt. I don't buy for one second that Frankie is an experienced cop. I can't stand how within minutes of meeting someone Frankie will either isolate them or "change" her appearance/attitude to match what they think is the real her. the relationship between Frankie & Matt seems forced and there is not tension between them. To say that I didn't enjoy this book would be putting it kindly. If there was a rating below one star then I would have given it.
Funny Look into Smalltown Crime..and love :).......2004-09-27
I haven't enjoyed a book like this in ages! Funny wasn't the word, it was hilarious and so in your face. The writing was phenomenal and very witty, no stupid and unrealistic silliness here.
A TRUE romantic comedy with much depth.
The characters were very fleshed out and I started to imagine I knew them. The hero is not perfect and the heroine is FAR from being any kind of perfect which I loved LOL. Ms. Hughes also did a little role reversal here with the characters. The hero was the more sensitive one here with thoughts of marriage and so forth and the heroine was a chain smoking loudmouth with ideas of getting said hero into bed, lol. I Loved it.
If you love Janet Evanovich and her Stephanie Plum series, you will adore this one. Since the two authors are very close friends you can sense the writing styles are shared. Same humor and 'in your face' heroine who doesn't apologize.
Frankie Daniels hates her life. She just was demoted and sent packing to a small-town called Purdyville, NC after being caught sleeping with a married man...her partner and a very important man's son. LOL.
Purdyville isn't what she expects. The people are very nosey and seem to know everything about everyone, but that isn't her biggest problem right now. The Sheriff of this hick town is. Mr. Matt Webber, a gorgeous and seemingly non-hick guy with the sexiest eyes she'd ever seen. Also her boss...hmmm, not smart Frankie.
Thinking about getting Sheriff Webber into bed isn't on her 'too smart' list so she bides her time until she can find another job out of this place and away from the town's gossips and the town's bully whom she beats up on her first day in.
Crime seems to have risen with her arrival and no one knows why, must be that 'big city girl' bringin' trouble.
Matt is determined to scratch away at that tough exterior and get to the real Frankie, what he finds blows his mind. But can Frankie stay put long enough to trust again?
This is one funny and hot book. The tension between the two are amazing. I was loathe for it to end. Thank-you Ms. Hughes for a great read and brightening up my day :)

When The Hero and Heroine Aren't Equal.......2004-06-22
Frankie Daniels is an Atlanta police detective who has an affair with her partner. Her rationale: he told her he was separated. In reality, he's married with three kids, something she knows already. Even worse: he's the police commissioner's son-in-law. We're supposed to have respect for a woman with such poor judgment that she doesn't wait to see if the ink on the divorce paper is dry before she jumps into bed with him?
I tried to swallow my unease when this tidbit of Frankie's fouled up life is dropped on me. Okay, the writer is going for deeply flawed. I don't need nor want perfection with my characters. I want them to blunder now and then, to be unreasonable or make mistakes, because that's how we all are. We've been in those shoes before, and trust me, they're a perfect fit more often than any of us want to admit.
I figured once Frankie was transferred out of Atlanta and foisted off on a small town police department in North Carolina that her personality would even out, we'd see some of her better qualities shining through.
I could believe the chain smoking, the addiction to coffee, and even the mouth on her that spewed filth like a garbage truck vomiting up its load at the end of a long, hot summer day. What I couldn't get behind was the writer's wish to sell Frankie as a smart, observant, top notch detective who was worth her weight in gold to any police department lucky to have her.
Look, it's hard enough to find books about women where they are not written as stupid nits, but it hurts more when a female writer writes them stupid and thinks it makes the character flawed in some way. Flawed, yes, by all means make them flawed, but flawed in a way that does not translate into stupid.
Frankie blithely goes about alienating everyone in her path, because you see, she's had a hard life, what with her daddy dying in the line of duty when she's a kid and her momma being a genteel Southern lady who spends too much time looking for a man to take care of her while she sips her cooking sherry from a fruit jar. Frankie's the way she is because she's learned not to rely on anyone else, that she has to be tough, and that she somehow has to live up to her daddy's legendary reputation as a cop.
Oh, honey, get off the cross, someone else needs the wood. I'd buy all this if your creator hadn't made you stumble through every interaction with the hero. I'd be happy to commiserate with the bad hand you were dealt if your creator had given you a shred of dignity by not making you the comic sidekick, while making the hero so nearly perfect I wanted him to fail at something, no matter how petty and vindictive that made me.
But, no, Frankie marches through the book making snap judgments, riling people left and right, and generally being a horse's ass, that by the book's end all I could do was sigh with relief and giggle at the magical way all the plots were tied up with a big shiny bow! Even more annoying for me was the hero's belief that these two could engage in an affair and no one would be the wiser, and then not understanding Frankie's anger when colleagues do find out and smirk at her. None of them would dare smirk at the hero, as he's the police chief, so yeah, he's insulated from the crap Frankie ends up wading through.
Does this soften my opinion of Frankie any? Well, no. She's tossed out of one police department for sleeping with her partner, and then takes up with the police chief within a month of being on her new job. I really wanted to know why someone didn't just tattoo STUPID on her forehead.
If you're looking for sexy, smart, and a heroine who shares equal space on the page with the hero, don't read this book.
The feminisation of Frankie.......2004-05-01
Frankie Daniels is a supposedly tough city detective who is sent to work in a small town, much to her humiliation. The first night she is there she beats up the town bully, much to everyone's delight. However, she is not allowed to remain tough for long. Every woman she meets sets about feminising her, making her buy satin underwear, teaching her to wear makeup or cook or something, by the end of the book she is so completely feminine that she is worrying about what to wear for a date with her dishy boss Matt Webber, isn't that cute? Reading this book is like watching one of those ghastly musicals like Annie Get Your Gun or Calamity Jane, in which a tomboy heroine is prettified and domesticated to make her fit to associate with men. What was wrong with Frankie the way she was? Why does she have to be transformed into a painted perfumed tart? This book made me nauseous. Frankie's supposed toughness is entirely unconvincing anyway, she's about as tough as marshmallow, Stephanie Plum looks like Rambo by comaprison.
Hot Shot Hit the Spot.......2004-04-14
I was looking for a fun, quick read. This book definitely met my needs. It can be predictable, but still fun and full of romance and mystery. The best combination in my book!
Frankie Daniels is a hard core detective in Atlanta and used to seeing gruesome crimes. Her MO is to not get involved and be the best at her job...trying to follow in her slain father's footsteps. After an error in judgement that cost her her job, she is moved to a small town. Once there, she encounters the menacing town bully, the Chief of Police (her boss), and many more characters of Purdyville. The story goes from there with love stories, a cast of wonderful characters, and mysteries to be solved.
If you're looking for a well written book that leads you to a good time...this is one you should read.
Book Description

Inspirational, real-life engineering success stories
Explanations of how engineering innovations can play a major role in athletic success and broaden your horizons
A "Getting Started" chapter that tells how you can ease the transition from student to successful engineer
Employer Web sites and contat information for every sport and a large recommended-reading section that connects you to sports engineering
Learn how to turn the love of sports into a lucrative engineering career.
Consider this book a gateway. It is designed to open your mind to the wonders of engineering. You will see, first hand, the hundreds of things that you can do with an engineering degree and an interest in sports. You will discover opportunities you hadn't thought about, and you may even begin to look at engineering in a new way. Be prepared to get excited and to learn that engineering can give you a new and different way of seeing the world.
Written for middle school, high school and pre-engineering college students, this book compiles resources, information, and stories of engineers who work passionately in the sports industry to design new and improved products for athletes and spectators, alike. Ranging from the design and construction of stadiums and courses to the design and manufacture of skateboarding, golf, swimming, and skiing equipment, as well as shoe design and much more, you will understand what you need to know to work in this industry and find a satisfying and rewarding job as a sports engineer.
This book presents possibilities you never expected. You will see what types of engineers create your favorite sports equipment and find out how to identify companies that will hire you as an engineer. From the software engineers who design scoreboards to the materials engineers who work on new helmets to the mechanical engineers who create new "extreme sports" products, the sports industry has a place for almost every type of engineer. You will learn what it takes to design sporting goods and get advice from engineers about how to succeed as a sports engineer. A strong motivation for writing this book is to help you see that engineering can be fun. It's fun being on the cutting edge of technology, and it's exciting to try to make the world a better place in which to live in.
If you have ever played a team sport, you understand that teamwork is integral to the success of the team. Each player brings different strengths to the team, without which the team can't function as efficiently. Engineering design works in the same way. Each member of the team contributes, according to his or her individual strengths, and, as a result, the learning produces an excellent product.
A vital component of engineering success, especially in the sports engineering industry, is excellent communication skills. As explained by Jennifer Ocif, a performance footwear engineer at Reebok International Ltd., "Communication is a life skill that constantly needs attention and improvement. Unfortunately, it is not specifically taught in engineering classes, but you can learn it by doing it anywhere. You just have to work at it, because, no matter how smart you are, if you can't communicate with the people you work with, your ideas will never go anywhere."
Because the sports industry is so large, I can't cover every sport in this book. Some sports may be left out entirely and some descriptions may leave you craving more information. If you find yourself in the craving-more-information category, use that energy to your benefit. Contact the manufacturers listed to inquire about summer work or co-op opportunities. Tour facilities and begin talking to engineers for tips on getting through school and for gathering information about what they do now. Take apart your favorite piece of equipment to figure out how it works. Then, you'll truly begin to think and work like a sports engineer. Don't be afraid to fail a few times, either.
Thomas Edison was one of the most prolific inventors of all time. What made Edison so great was that he believed that every failure brought him closer to success. As a result of a lifetime of work and tens of thousands of failures, he held over 1,000 patents for his successful inventions. Failure is a rite of passage to success.
Some of the most amazing inventions and technologies on the market today exist because one engineer had an idea. Look back at old pictures of the bicycle. People wanted it to go faster, they wanted it to go down mountains and wanted it to be more comfortable. The difference is engineering. Year after year, engineers returned to the drawing board and made the bicycle better. What will bicycles look like in another 10 years? It's up to you and your imagination to make the world a better place-a place that is safer, more fun, and enjoyable for everyone.
If you want an exciting and diverse career, an engineering degree can blow open the doors of opportunity.
So lace up your running shoes and let's get going

Excellent resource!.......2004-06-07
I read this book for a research project I was doing at school. This gave excellent insight into the sports engineering industry. I had no idea how many opportunities there are in sports for engineers. The list of Web sites in the "Getting Started" chapter was very helpful and provided me with many outlets in the industry. I would definately reccomend this book to any student wanting to explor a sports or engineering career.
Book Description
The mean streets of Boston in the 1970s played host to a nefarious underworld of pimps, pushers, and addicts, and Paul "Sully" Doyle was there. From Kenmore Square hippies to South Boston junkies to Combat Zone prostitutes, this undercover operative with the federal Drug Enforcement Administration met every type of unsavory character in town in his fight to bust violent rings of dope, coke, and smack dealers during a turbulent era in the city's history.
Now Special Agent Doyle bluntly chronicles the riveting, true stories from his years on the inside. Known on the street by his alias, "Paulie Sullivan," he recalls his rookie days, trying to infiltrate the criminal drug world under the tutelage of his veteran partner, through his coming of age as an experienced narc-sharing his keen observations on ruined lives, personal peril, and government red tape along the way. A former prizefighter not at all shy about punching his way out of trouble, the author divulges a candid, worm's-eye-view of the drug war with all its blemishes and glories. With abiding humanity and graphic detail, the memoir richly describes exploits with junkie stool pigeons and hooker informants, college burnouts and Chinatown mobsters, ghetto pimps and violent thugs, bureaucratic obstacles and uncooperative foreign governments, successful busts and brushes with death. Marijuana, cocaine, heroin, amphetamines, LSD-no illegal substance failed to tempt those seeking the ultimate high, resulting in the long nights, sudden danger, and uncertain outcomes that faced Sully and his partners.
Combining gripping action with perceptive commentary, this unvarnished snapshot of one agent's experiences undercover adeptly captures the violence, futility, and endless frustration of the war on drugs. As engrossing as a fiction thriller, Hot Shots and Heavy Hits provides a rare glimpse into a harsh world unknown to most of us.

Kept waiting for the excitement.......2007-08-18
While the story chapters in the book are individually interesting, they somehow don't make a whole. The book feels choppy, as if it needed additional narrative to make if flow more smoothly. I expected, based on other reviews, to become immersed in the life of a narcotics officer. Just a average read.
One of the Good Guys.......2006-09-13
I truly enjoyed this book. Paul Doyle's experiences were something that needed to be put on paper and published for the world to see. Although the names and the places may change, the core root of the drug world remains the same. In reading this book I found that other than the bell bottom pants and silk shirts, the happenings of the underground drug world are in so many ways similar today. The difference being the technology used and the way the intelligence is gained. I bought this book at a fair where the author was present and signed my copy. I spoke to him for a few moments and told him that I worked for a police department in a neighboring town and that my husband was also a police officer. He suggested that I read it and have my husband do the same. This book was a real page turner and I wasn't able to put it down until I was finished. I was truly impressed with his compassion for people which can easily be lost in the investigative and enforcement field. He points out that he actually had to become 'one of them' in order to take some of these criminals down. It was a different day and age. God Bless Paul and the guys that he worked with. It's not a job for the meek and mild.
Outstanding! Opened my eyes - a must read.......2005-07-30
Read this book at the advice of a friend and it is a must read for every caring American. Opened my eyes to the sacrifice some people are doing on our behalf and opened my eyes to a life most of us cant imagine. These folks do it for us and then in the end the Author takes us on a learning experience about where the drug money goes and who is behind it - the terrorist connection. He also lets you know the solution to cracking the incredible drug problem in this country lies in our families and not in Washington. Read it
Hot Shots and Heavy Hits: Tales of an Undercover Drug Agent.......2005-07-24
Excellent. Didn't want to stop reading until I was finished the book.
Superlative tale telling- and guess what- it's all true.......2005-02-17
Paul Doyle delivers edge of your seat excitement. Poignantly related, this warrior served as an undercover drug agent in the seamy sixties and seventies, in Boston's most rag-tag blighted neighborhoods. What is most refreshing is the lack of moral ambiguity in this narration. While remaining compassionate to the true victims of drugs- the addicts themselves, Paul Doyle mercilessly hunts down the perps on the top of the food chain, the major dealers and manufacturers- in an effort to staunch the flow of the drug epidemic.
I really enjoyed the book, my hope is that if it does get made into a film that the director has as subtle a touch as the memoirist.

• Muhammad Ali graduated 376th from a high school class of 391 students.
• Julia Roberts auditioned for All My Children but didn’t get the part.

Each page of Famous Failures features a headline revealing the major failure of a person who later became phenomenally successful, and the smaller type at the bottom of each page explains that person's remarkable achievements. It all goes to show that no one has made the climb to the top without encountering an avalanche along the way. Reading just a few pages of this book makes you want to go back out there and try, try again.

Inspirational, interesting, and irreverant.......2007-08-05
A fascinating book filled with stories of little-known failures and foibles of the famous and wealthy. It's guaranteed to make you feel better about your own false starts and help you back on the road to success.
Motivator.......2007-05-21
This book is interesting and motivating. It is neat to know how some of these famous people failed before making it to where they are today.
A terrifically great read.......2007-04-07
"Famous Failures" is a hefty little 288-page compendium showcasing descriptive vignettes of hundreds of famous and successful people in the fields of entertainment, sports, science, politics, and literature who all shared one thing in common - they experienced failure. From Albert Einstein who failed the entrance exams to the Swiss Polytechnic Institute, to J. K. Rowling (author of the Harry Potter novels) who was so impoverished that she lived on welfare in an apartment infested with mice, to Sharon Stone who could not get a date to her own highschool prom dance, to Dick Cheney who flunked out of Yale University (twice!), to John Wayne who was rejected from the United States Naval Academy, to Steve Jobs (founder of Apple Computer) who dropped out of Reed College in his freshman year, "Famous Failures" lists the well known and well respected who sometime in their lives and careers got rejected, flunked out, worked lousy jobs, goofed up, did time in jail, or had other kinds of failure experiences and frustrations before achieving the successes for which they are now know. A terrifically great read, "Famous Failures" is especially recommended for anyone getting discouraged about overcoming the seeming failures in their own lives and career paths.

okay reading..........2005-08-09
This guide provided you with all their layouts and tips and you are expecting of them. The inside information your expecting is exactly what your getting. But, there is still one problem, on the back cover it says "secret codes inside"... there are no codes inside this guide, false advertisement all the way. I specifically bought this book to get some codes to better my play. well there arent any codes at all. So dont buy the book if your looking for codes. Only buy the book if your wanting to get layouts of the courses your wanting to play...
Very nice to look at, but very little to improve your game.......2004-09-23
I love Hot Shots Golf 3 and its successor, Hot Shots Golf Fore. I'm pretty good at the game as I win a fair number of tournaments, but I can't seem to take it to the next level and get those -18 scores that you see people talking about on the net all the time (I still have yet to get a hole in one on either game, although I've been close many times). So I picked up the strategy guide for Fore to see if it would help.
I have to say that the book is well made with lots of color on high quality paper, but the only thing that helped me here was some of the tips on how to play certain holes, especially the ones that gave me trouble. Each of the game's courses (I believe there are 13 in this game) are layed out hole by hole and a startegy for playing each hole is given for both beginners and advanced players. But what I would have liked to see was a listing as to which characters are best suited for a particular course and what is the best equipment (clubs and balls) for the course. It wasn't a bad purchase, but I saw strategy guides on the net for HSG3 that were much more helpful.
