If you don't mind a little corny humor mixed in with your technology, then you'll be delighted with Rich Seifert's Gigabit Ethernet. Written in an unpretentious, highly accessible style, this book provides an enlightening overview of Gigabit Ethernet and offers a historical peek into the Ethernet world. Despite Seifert's personal history (he was one of the original architects of the Ethernet standard), he refrains from the hard sell, instead offering a balanced, reasonably objective take on the subject. The book does lack a centralized glossary; however, the abundant and generous footnotes and clear text more than make up for this shortcoming.

Gigabit Ethernet is divided into three parts--Foundations of Gigabit Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet Technology, and Applying Gigabit Ethernet. The first section strolls down memory lane, telling the story of Ethernet itself, one of the industry's most venerated technologies. Seifert ends these preliminary chapters with sections on how Gigabit Ethernet will address some of the older technology's drawbacks. The section on Gigabit Ethernet technology begins with an overview of the standard and its technological fundamentals, ends with the irreverently titled "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Gigabit Ethernet Standard," and delves into media access control, hubs, and physical layer architecture in between. Wrapping up this volume are chapters covering how Gigabit Ethernet would be deployed in a real-world network, performance issues, and competing technologies. --Sarah L. Roberts-Witt

5 out of 5 stars Great buy - Has everything you need to know about GigE.......2004-06-30

There are few people out there who can write about technology in a clear and easy to understand way. Seifert is one of them (Doug Comer is another that comes to mind). Seifert's style is very easy to read and this book is no exception. It didn't give me a headache like other technolgy books do :)

I highly recommend this book for anyone who is interested to know more about Gigabit Ethernet technology, systems, cabling, applications. Its very comprehensive. Happy reading!

5 out of 5 stars Seifert rocks hard!.......2000-10-07

Seifert walks you through and gives you the core concepts you need to understand the evolution of Ethernet to the Gigabit and Multi-Gigabit speeds. Very well layed out.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic introduction into Gigabit Ethernet.......2000-05-19

This book is fantastic if you need to get a grasp of Gigabit Ethernet fairly quickly. The explanations are clear and concise and it's fairly easy to read. I skipped the first couple of chapters because I wasn't concerned with some of the historical perspective, and the book was still very readable.

It has the best explanation of 8b/10b encoding and autoconfiguration I've found as well as doing a good job describing the differences between Gigabit Ethernet and the 10Mbps and 100Mbps versions.

There's even a little humor to spice the book up. It is bad engineering humor, but humor nonetheless.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book with a lot of meaty information.......1999-08-06

Well written and full of information. Excellent comparison in the last chapter of ATM to Gb E-net. If you need a book on Ethernet, get this one. So many books just have a lot of text with very dry information in the form of opinions (nothing you can sink your teeth into) but this book has very good information presented very cogently.

If you want just one book on networking and specifically upon Ethernet, get this book! If you are installing or supporting a network, get this book! It has tables on "Ethernet Media Designations" (e.g. 10Base-FL) so you buy the right stuff, and other tables such as "Switching vs Repeating", "Full-Duplex Media Support", and "Link Propagation Delays" which are very clear and helpful.

I wish I had had this book three years ago when I was converting our old network over from coax to UTP/10BaseT.

5 out of 5 stars An Excellent Source On Ethernet.......1998-11-28

An excellent and must have book on ethernet. Glad to see someone involved in the standards process decipher the ethernet, fast eternet and gigabit standards. Very easy to understand and focuses on the practical aspects.

LANs no longer serve only to help office workers share printers and exchange files. The future of the LAN runs heavily to bandwidth-intensive applications. The authors of Switched, Fast, and Gigabit Ethernet know this, and they do excellent work in bringing their readers up to speed on the newest high-capacity Ethernet technologies.

Using conceptual illustrations and circuit diagrams liberally, Switched, Fast, and Gigabit Ethernet defines the three LAN standards in its title and details how they compare to each other and to competing technologies such as Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM). You'll find coverage of repeaters, bridges, routers, and full-duplex Ethernet, along with information on Virtual LANs (VLANs) and Layer 3 switching.

The authors don't get swept up in the hype associated with these new technologies, even when offering practical advice on building, expanding, and managing LANs. They acknowledge that, in many cases, 10BaseT networks will be fine for some time, but they go to much trouble to spotlight the implementation issues of particular concern to managers of high-capacity LANs.

In addition to coverage of emergent Ethernet technologies, Switched, Fast, and Gigabit Ethernet provides context by presenting a history of the networking industry and the technologies and companies that have defined it. This book is a complete picture of the LAN industry. --David Wall

After the third or fouth factual error (I teach Ethernet technologies) and the fifth or sixth typesetting error (missing or partial paragraphs) I finally tracked down the publishing house and told them of my disappointment. They sent out another book (without the typesetting errors), but it didn't set my mind at ease about the factual errors.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding organization.......1999-11-27

I was really pleased with both the information containted in this book as well as the manner in which it was presented. This book's organization makes it great for a "cover-to-cover" read (on a VERY long weekend!) or for a quick reference check.

If I could only have one Ethernet book on my shelf, this would be it.

3 out of 5 stars A valuable reference but seriously flawed.......1999-11-19

Switched, Fast, and Gigabit Ethernet has the potential to be an invaluable resource for anyone involved in networking who either currently uses or is contemplating changing to an Ethernet network. This book provides an enormous amount of information on existing and emerging Ethernet standards. Unfortunately, it is seriously flawed by too many incorrect and contradictory statements. If you already know enough about Ethernet to adjust for these errors, the book may be of only marginal value to you. For those trying to learn and understand all the variations of Ethernet, the errors can be very confusing and may lead to problems in networks they may be installing.

As an example, in the second paragraph on page 344, the authors discuss the characteristics of repeaters, noting that they "...regenerate weak incoming signals, thus extending the diameter of the network." They go on to state "In this way, repeaters are invisible to network events such as collisions, merely propagating them. Hence, a repeater cannot extend the collision domain of a network." Then in the second paragraph on page 346 they make the contradictory statement that "Because a repeater is a shared-media device and propagates all traffic, including collisions, however, it merely extends the collision domain of a network...". Then they go on to state that "A more powerful device, such as a bridge, router, or switch, is needed to extend the actual network diameter." in direct contradiction to the statement made on page 344.

One other example really stood out. In the first paragraph on page 440 they state "Because 1000BASE-LX Gigabit Ethernet over multiple-mode fiber is limited to 500M, you may need 100BASE-SX single-mode Gigabit Ethernet for especially long links. A 100BASE-LX Gigabit Ethernet switch with the capability to add a few 1000BASE-SX connections is the proper solution for this example." Referring to Table 6.11 on page 248-249, 1000BASE-LX has a maximum distance of 550M over either type of multi-mode fiber and up to 5,000M over single-mode fiber. Obvious contradictions are the references to 100BASE-SX ... Gigabit Ethernet and 100BASE-LX Gigabit Ethernet in this example. 100BASE Gigabit? Also, if 1000 is substituted for 100 in those two instances, no specification for short wavelength (SX), 850nm laser over single-mode fiber exists.

Although the examples cited above are two of the worst, they are by no means the only ones, the shear number of errors becomes very irritating. I would like to give this book a better rating, it probably does belong on the shelf of every network administrator or manager, but I am tired of giving a pass to flawed products because they do provide some significant benefit. For example: operating systems that are seriously flawed but we accept because they offer capabilities we want. One of the main problems I see in our current economy and society is the willingness of management to turn out products of mediocre quality, considering them good enough as long as they don't have a flaw that makes them completely unusable. Macmillan Technical Publishing states that their "goal is to create in-depth technical books of the highest quality and value." Is this really what they consider "highest quality"? If they clean up the errors and add more of the value that does exist in this book when they produce the Fourth Edition, I will give it SIX stars.

4 out of 5 stars On the fence.......2002-11-10

This is a good book. It provides a solid foundation for questioning the way in which MANs are constructed today. The problem with the book is the author takes a confusing stance on the subject of constructing pure Ethernet networks within the MAN. At points, you will feel as though the author isn't sure himself that this is the best solution for providing a robust solution. But still a very good read. When I first picked it up, I couldn't put it down. But I kept expecting something that never did manifest. This book needed to provide more detail in terms of the actual construction, and less on the comparison between legacy TDM and Ethernet. Very much worth reading though.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars IT Professional's Must-Have Manual.......2003-07-18

As an IT manager for a large corporation, and an engineer, I did not think I needed a book on Gigabit Ethernet. However, I was given this book recently and have found myself going to it on a regular basis. This book is not a simple study of GigE. It is a comprehensive guide to data networking that includes storage, fiber channel, SAN, WAN, LAN and more. I would recommend any person in IT or data networking to have this book on their shelf.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive and Well-Handled.......2003-07-17

There's much more to technology than where the bits go. Equally important is the role of the technology in the marketplace, the applications that the technology enables, the economics that underlie its success or failure, and the companies that play in the space. Bedell's book does all of these. Far more than just a "how does it work" guide, "Gigabit Ethernet" provides information that will help corporate decision-makers chart a course of action for Gigabit Ethernet implementation in thir own firms. If you are a middle or senior level manager with GbE on your plate, you need to read this book.

5 out of 5 stars A very well written book..........2003-07-17

A sign of a good writer is when somebody technical can teach individuals at all levels of understanding (e.g. Jeff Doyle: Routing TCP/IP Volume 1). That is just what this author did.

He gives a comprehensive view of Gigabit Ethernet and draws relevant comparisons to competing technologies. Not only does he show its current applications, but also explores the pricing and implementation considerations of GigE which are VERY important factor in today's competitive market. I also found it interesting how the author gave an "inside" explanation at how the major service providers are competing for the marketshare.

If you are still trying to decide on this book, I think the sales rank tells the story. This book is second in total sales (690,882) compared to all other books on the same topic. Also, some technical books have egregious errors in them which shows poor editing and a "rush" mentality (e.g. Sybex). This author obviously put careful thought into his presentation and organization. I generally do not like books published by McGraw-Hill, but I will strongly consider buying more of their technical books after reading this one. Do yourself a favor and buy this book. I highly recommend.

5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive, well-written technology manual.......2003-07-09

Thank you, Paul Bedell, for writing a book that is useful! You did an excellent job of taking numerous complex technologies and dissecting their characteristics into simple, easy-to-understand parts, so that any reader can understand the basic applications and principals. In addition, the diagrams supporting the text are superb and illustrate the points clearly and concisely. I have over 18 years experience in telecommunications (voice and data networking) and am no stranger to technology. Yet, I still find myself going to your book first when I have Ethernet and data networking questions. I have recommended this book to many of my colleagues and customers and they too, have found the content as useful as I have. Bravo Paul!

A highly ambitious undertaking, Data Communications Gigabit Ethernet Handbook does a good job of escorting you from the theoretical to the practical and back again. Masterminded by Data Communications Executive Editor Stephen Saunders, this seven-part book covers everything from the historical context of Gigabit Ethernet to tutorials on implementing the technology on your own network. Particularly impressive are the sections on Gigabit Ethernet and related specs, Gigabit Ethernet design tutorials, and available Gigabit Ethernet hardware. Though these sections won't answer all the questions you may have, they will get you thinking.

Saunders assembles an impressive collection of Gigabit pioneers and networking heavyweights to author the book's various chapters. Though there is some information overlap toward the end of the book, the writing and content quality is consistently high. For example, Allen Beasley's chapter on IP switching offers a brilliant dissection of the high-speed networking market that explores economic as well as technical issues.

Many of the chapters point out what is lacking in Gigabit Ethernet and then expound on the technology that can fix the problem. The only caveat is that these solutions have either been developed by the authors or the companies that they are affiliated with. Though this undoubtedly brings the authors' objectivity into question, the chapters do offer clear insights, and terrific technologies do emerge. All of the authors appear to share a common goal--advancing Gigabit Ethernet in the marketplace. --Sarah L. Roberts-Witt

5 out of 5 stars LANs! LANs! LAN! - THE book on networking!.......1999-01-23

Victoria has done it again! This is a great book . LANs...is a great book for those who want to understand networking from the ground up. The first chapter assumes some knowledge of Basic Data Comm but, you can skip it and still understand the rest of the book. The book is laid out to take students from standards to basic infrastructure to advanced networking. This book launches the reader into other books in the series for detailed explanations of technical topics - it does not overwhelm the reader. I plan to use it as the textbook for my Internetworking Fundamentals class. Check it out!

          Book Description

Optical Networking Standards: A Comprehensive Guide for Professionals provides a single source reference of over a hundred standards and industry technical specifications for optical networks at all levels: from components to networking systems through global networks, as well as coverage of networks management and services. This book focuses on the recently approved, adopted and implemented standards that have fueled the development of versatile switches, routers and multi-service provisioning platforms. These networking elements have enabled the service-providers world-wide to offer flexible yet customized bundled-services based on IP, MPLS and Carrier-Grade Ethernet.

Lead implementers, contributors and editors of the new standards have come together to produce this uniform and complete reference. The list includes independent consultants, professionals, and researchers from such companies as AMCC, Agere Systems, British Telecom, Ciena Corporation, Cisco Systems, Lucent Technologies, Marconi, Nortel, PMC-Sierra, Strix Systems and Tellabs.

          Highlights include recent advancements involving:

          - Critical technical standards and implementation from ITU-T, IETF, MEF, and OIF

          - Optimization of SONET/SDH and OTN infrastructure for data delivery, GFP, VCAT and LCAS

          - IP, MPLS, Ethernet and Fibre Channel services over public networks

          - Optical control plane for dynamically switched optical networks, ASON

          - Network survivability and recovery

          - Timing in global optical networks
