Even film diehards have a tough time resisting the instant gratification of the digital camera. Today's digital cameras are more affordable then ever before, and they deliver high quality images that are a snap to share. Plus, you can take risks with a digital camera you never would with a film camera. You waste nothing; there's no film required, and because you only print the pictures you need, digital photography is cost effective and environmentally friendly.
But to take full advantage of a digital camera, you need to be an experienced photographer and an expert at digital photography too. With more than 15 years of experience as a photojournalist, author Derrick Story brings you Digital Photography Pocket Guide, 3rd Edition. For everyone who owns or will own a digital camera (and that pretty much means everyone!), this is the perfect on-the-go guide for taking top-notch digital photos.
In this third edition of the bestselling pocket guide, Story expands on the basic photography techniques that he introduced in earlier editions, including an explanation of each camera component and what it does, tips for choosing just the right settings for your needs, and much more. This indispensable guide covers everything from how to shoot sports action, close ups, and night shots, to dealing with image resolution, archiving, and memory cards.
Affordable and portable, Digital Photography Pocket Guide, 3rd Edition offers full-color photographs, screen shots, and line art illustrating all the topics in the guide's three main sections ("Digital Camera Components," "Standard Camera Functions," and "How Do I?"). Contents are labeled A to Z for quick reference. There's also a comprehensive table of contents and index so you'll waste no time flipping to the specific information you need--whether you want to transfer images, make a QuickTime movie, or just figure out what purpose that mystery setting on your camera serves. There's even a section of easy-to-read reference tables for quick look-up of white balance settings, exposure compensation, camera mode explanations, and plenty more.

good reference.......2007-08-14
This book is a good reference pint to start with for beginners or intermidiate. Cover many topics and list many functions. Good book to have
Very very very BASIC!!!.......2007-08-06
Even though it is a Pocket Guide, I was expecting more from this book. I'm not saying it is a bad book but it is very very basic; practically focussed to those who have never EVER used a digital camera. The only chapter (to my taste anyway) that I find with relevant/interesting/good information is the 3rd chapter where the writer describes some tips on "how to questions". In summary, if you have some experience on digital photography this book won't be that usefull and if you want to learn about aperture, shutter speed and so on..there are better books to learn those subjects.
Happy with this purchase........2007-04-02
I feel this is a perfect little guide for beginning digital photographers. I've been taking photos with my digital for about 3 years now and this little pocket guide still comes in handy and is very useful. It's size is perfect for carrying it with you in your camera case and it gets right to those frequent questions that come up.
A good little book to own!
Book was okay.......2007-03-22
The book I orderd that I thought was going to be better than his 2nd edition fell short. But it was a good book.
Good Introduciton.......2007-03-11
This book is a good introduction in Digital Photography; it shows the hardware specifications and features of most digital cameras, and also techniques on how to take snapshots. It is easy to take it wherever you go; I'm putting it with my camera's equipments.
It was a good help in understanding the basics, especially when I started PADI's Digital Underwater Photography course.

Enjoyable read!.......2006-04-04
This book was very interesting. I would say that the title was a misnomer, because most of the witnesses did not indicate seeing "red eyes". There were some editorial errors as well, typos, that sort of thing, but the collection of articles and interviews were fascinating and didn't answer any questions, but rather helped to fuel the mystery of the mothman. Worth buying and adding to you collection of Mothman books!
The Best So Far.......2006-01-26
I purchased this book after selecting Mothman as the topic for a college paper; its vast amount of material ultimately earned me an A on my project. Wamsley is impressively consistent in his street-level approach with the eyewitnesses; other than Jeff's first book, this quality is not present in any of the other books about Mothman. The only reason for this, as far as I can tell, is the fact that Wamsley is actually from Point Pleasant and the interviewees evidently have an implicit trust in him. (I have Wamsley's first book on Mothman and this unique attribute exists there and is further fleshed out by this book.)
This trust, for me, trumps and puts to rest any comments from outsiders who feel they can do a better job than Wamsley. As an armchair fan of cryptozoology, I know how nitpicky and backstabbing the whole "field" is, and I think there is plenty of resentment over the fact that Wamsley not only got the interviews - where they didn't (or couldn't!) - but furthermore, he does not consider himself to be a cryptozoologist. (They can't stand it.)
Refreshingly, this renders any argument they have against Jeff and his techniques moot. He beat them to the punch and their impotence shows.
The extras such as the illustrations and rare photos give this book an "X files" feel. Any true fan of the Mothman knows no photos exist; the art helps to set the tone. And there is a lot of it, from some very talented artists.
Best of all, as in keeping with his first book, Jeff lets the reader decide for himself just what the eyewitnesses saw. Again, this rubs some crypto fans the wrong way, because they must be waiting for Jeff to propose some preposterous theory so they can criticize it and shoot him down.
Kudos to Wamsley for keeping it real, authentic, and down to earth. John Keel even endorsed this book. These people saw SOMETHING then... read this book and come to your own conclusions!

A Decent Collection.......2005-12-30
Wamsley's strength is his proximity to events and his ability to gather relevant documents from the original Mothman days in 1966 and 1967. The interviews are rather weak and don't offer anything beyond what has already been reported and explored. I'm inclined to suggest a 2.5 star rating. The book isn't quite worthy of the three stars given, but it has enough archive information that it doesn't warrant a two. This book is a great item for people who are addicted to Mothman lore, but Keel's original The Mothman Prophecies is still the bible on the events in Point Pleasant.
Anticlimatic .......2005-12-09
This book is all-in-all not that bad...just not what I expected. I find the subject matter very intriguing and having lived in the Appalachians for a time, I respect the folks there and trust their word. However, some do have a tendency to spin big yarns. Similar tales have been told by folks in the NC-TN mountains during the 70's and 80's which I think is also intriguing but an area which sadly enough wasn't explored in the book (no disrespect to WV).
The author included interviews with witnesses which were not very helpful. If he does a similar venture in the future, he should press the people a little harder with more pertinent questions. The photographs were not very useful but I think I see the point he was trying to make.
A collection of stories, not an investigation........2005-07-27
I have read Wamsley's first book, Keel's book from the 70's and purchased the movie on DVD. Jeff's second book is a good addition to the first because he is careful to focus on new information and interviews, instead of retelling the same stories. My frustration is with the interviews of the eyewitnesses. Jeff seems more concerned about not upsetting the witnesses than getting to the facts. I found myself reading the interviews and wanting to ask obvious follow-up questions so that I could paint a clear picture of their experience in my mind. For example the book has many different depictions of the Mothman. Some truly look like a large moth; others look like an ugly human with wings. I would have liked each eyewitness to pick one of the sketches, or draw one of their own, to help me create a mental image of their experience. The interviewer seemed hesitant to press the witnesses for additional details or clarity. I was hoping to build mental images that would lead to a personal opinion about the events. Was it a hoax, a bird, or a monster? I enjoyed the book, but I'm still clueless.
Book Description
The story of General Benedict Arnold's defection to the British in September of 1780 has never been presented in this way. “Brilliantly conceived and thoroughly researched book. A fascinating new look at one of history’s most infamous men. You-are-there feel of a novel. Thought-provoking, intriguing and historically important, Eye of the Eagle will truly open your eyes”. New York Times best-selling author Ellen Tanner Marsh

Great reading.......2007-07-29
I very good book that gives the reader an interesting twist on what was believed to be gospel. The author's research is convincing.
awesome .......2007-04-20
An awesome book....definitely a different view .... a must read for anyone seeking to truely understand Benedict Arnold's story.
A Novel Approach to History.......2007-04-19
Who would have thought that what was assumed by the average student of American history to be an open and shut case against Benedict Arnold could be brought into question. And, furthermore, to do so with such detailed facts woven into a rather gripping novel format. Mr. WIlczak has laid out a compelling case that Arnold was not a traitor but a collaborator with George Washington to ultimately fool the British. This book could be the basis of an excellent movie.
Finally a different view!.......2007-04-13
This book expresses a thoroughly researched, fresh approach to one of history's most infamous legends. When I began to read the book I felt my feelings regarding Benedict Arnold could not be swayed. The author, however, through meticulous use of timeline, documented fact, and letters of many of the involved, opened my eyes to the possibility that Arnold may have been the protaganist in a great scheme to free the colonies and help create the United States. I highly recommend this book to anyone who seeks the truth instead of the commonly handed down history stories we have been fed since childhood. AAAAA+++++
AMAZING FACT FILLED BOOK.......2007-03-27
Well written and amazing to read. Author captured the moment and took you there. Book was flooded with facts.
I would highly recommend this book, it is not only for the history buffs.
If you do enjoy history, you will love the author's details.
Book Description
No job, no girlfriend, no home, no future. In 2001, cartoonist K. Thor Jensen had nothing. So he packed a bag and jumped onto a Greyhound bus, circling the United States on a 10,000-mile road trip. In this "joyously bleak handbook for the post-911 generation," Jensen tells his story and the stories of the people he meets on the way, in a tale that veers from the hilarious to the tragic. In over 300 pages of comics, you'll see flaming furniture, replica genitals, ghosts, fights and more of America than a graphic novel's ever dared to show.

Adventuring in the Crazy American Night.......2007-02-26
"The realities of my situation are catching up to me a little," says the author's character mid-way through the book. "No money, no home, no job, no future... In all the books, you travel and you have these grand epiphanies about your life and your place in the world... but none seem to be forthcoming."
Shortly after 9/11, Thor Jensen's prospects in New York dried up. What does he do? He buys a Greyhound Ameripass (the one which allows a passenger unlimited travel for x number of days) and travels from sea to shining sea (and back again) with a few bucks in his bank account and whatever he could cram into a backpack.
And, similarly to Kerouac's On The Road (written shortly after World War II), Red Eye, Black Eye is a veritable celebration of the underbelly of America from one who has been there. There are no "grand epiphanies" along the way, either. No, this is a real-life travelogue situation, with no solid plans or manufactured excitement along the way. It truly is a book about a guy on a Greyhound Bus for two months.
Yet, anyone who has traveled across this country by bus can tell you - it just ain't as simple as it sounds. There are thousands of people riding the buses each day, and travelers will have to interact with some of them in some manner whether they want to or not. And, at each stop-over point, there are peculiarities unique to the location and the "culture" as well. Mr. Jensen hits as much of this as he's able.
But this isn't just a book about the adventures of Thor Jensen - not by a long shot! Though told from his perspective, Mr. Jensen grants his creative talents to retelling some of the everyday stories recanted to him by folks who are putting him up for the night - folks he doesn't really know all that well and are therefore fascinating in their own right. We hear twisted dating stories, freaky co-workers, random bizarre encounters with the lunatic fringe, and several other memorable tales from the people along the way. In this sense, Red Eye, Black Eye could even be considered a modern man's version of Chaucer's Canterbury Tales. ...Almost.
While there's plenty of mild "debauchery" and "melodrama" to go around in Red Eye (Thor purchases Percocet across the Mexican border in one sequence, and calls his landlady to coerce the money she owes him in others), Mr. Jensen relates the experiences of others in a more cohesive manner. The reader understands that the particular story being retold is the author's version thereof. No need to worry, though. Mr. Jensen's story-telling abilities are top notch, and he manages to bestow a plethora of different people's lives without making any of them feel shoe-horned into place, or sapping the individuality out of them. And instead of fluid language and poetry, we are graced with Mr. Jensen's particular style of art.
This sort of traveling experience - the life of a hobo - is clearly not for everybody. Mr. Jensen captures it, making the moment real so that others may live it vicariously for a time. There truly is no stronger reason to pick up Red Eye than that!
A delightful series of vignettes of American life.......2007-02-15
When I started reading it, I couldn't stop until I was finished. The artwork was extremely well-drawn with wonderful backgrounds which keep the eyes demanding more and more, and the stories, both encountered by the cartoonist and retold by his friends, are entertaining glimpses into the lives of people from all around the country in a whirlwind tour on an unlimited bus pass.
Book Description
Scooters tells the story of the scooters' transition from a practical, efficient workhorse to a counter-cultural catalyst.
The Scootering hobby blends a healthy obsession for things mechanical with a distinct taste for the unusual. Scooters offers an insiders' look at the massive growth of the avocation in North America since the mid 1980's and explores the diversity of characters that make up the scooter scene. Filled with photographs and revving with color and personality, this wonderful book takes the reader along to the rally and should prove revealing and entertaining to those involved in Scootering and those who simply appreciate what it means to love and ride a work of art.
Invented in America and perfected in Europe, the scooter became a critical component in post-war reconstruction on the continent. Out-of-work munitions and aircraft factories churned out the user-friendly two wheelers as a boost to manufacturing and a way of providing inexpensive transportation capable of traversing a beleaguered infrastructure. Two key Italian marques, Vespa and Lambretta, lead a wave of stylish offerings from across Europe and created instant fan fare. Enthusiasm for the machine was such that scooter clubs were formed almost as quickly as the first models rolled off of the assembly lines. Competitive scooter riding events soon followed, and, in their heyday, scooters gave motorcycles a run for their money both on the racetrack and in showrooms.
Colin Shattuck is an active and well-traveled Scooterist involved in DCD, a Denver coalition of Scooter Clubs dedicated to hosting the annual Mile-High Mayhem Rally, one of the most heavily attended in North America. Shattuck is also co-founder of Sportique Scooters, a small chain of Scooter Shops based in Colorado.

A Day In The Life.......2007-01-10
This book pretty much tells the North American story of scooter lifestyle. It's not a tech book and it's not a book for people with European fantasies. This book covers how we do it in the states. I like that it has a fair share of Northwest coverage.
vespa.......2006-02-25
Its a nice book but I dont think I would buy it if I could have looked thrugh it first
Exceptional History of Scooters and the North American Scooter Scene.......2005-11-04
Scooters represent a lifestyle that is often overlooked in books that present the machines as objects of desire and affection. This books does both exceptionally. It reveals the history of the scooter and the subsequent scenes that grew up around it with it's primary focus being the North American scene. Great photos and beautiful layout. This is a must-have book for scooterists and those yearning to learn about scooters and their appeal.

You'll remember this dragon.......2005-09-04
First of all, I think the reading level is incorrect. This book has language more complex than books for babies. I would say preschool through 2nd grade is more appropriate. I read books to kids for a living and this is one of the best ones I've run across lately. It has a sense of reality, even though the main character is a baby dragon. It is uniquely charming, written by an accomplished Swedish author. The illustrations are appealing. The story has a sad but acceptable and quite realistic ending that any child can relate to.
