5 out of 5 stars Big Horses.......2007-09-21

This was a fun book to read. Being 'part' of Mark's life through his stories is such an adventure as well as offering wonderful teaching points. His tales of the draft horses has given me a new fondness for these hard-working giants. I'd recommend this book to not only horse lovers but also those who love to 'listen' to a good story. Mark's style of writing puts the reader right there with him in the thick of things.

A typically written Mark Rashid book. Very witty and leaves the reader with a little more insite than he started with. Recommend for most ages.

5 out of 5 stars A good read.......2007-07-11

Once again Mark Rashid has given us some really good stories that warm the heart. While this one does not contain much about training horses, it is a worthwhile read.

5 out of 5 stars Big Horses, Good Dogs & Straight Fences.......2007-01-15

Mark Rashid is one of the worlds truly kind gentlemen and these stories reflect that specialness. This book is a collection of true stories he tells about meaningful events in his life. Each chapter is a different story, which after reading any one of them, I found myself quietly reflecting on the specialness of it and the ways it helped me appreciate my own life lessons. It's a great book to have by your bed and read one story each night before turning off the light.
I've had the pleasure of auditing a couple clinics taught by Mark and can vouch for the fact that he "walks his talk". Pick up any of Mark's book and give them a read. You'll be entertained and inspired as a result!

Book Description

When it comes to sleuthing, she's not horsing around...

When full-time vet and part-time sleuth Jessica Popper is asked to treat a billionaire's ailing horse, she gets a deadly glimpse into the lifestyles of the rich and felonious….

Murder gallops after Jessie when an emergency call sends the traveling vet to a posh Long Island estate with her one-eyed Dalmatian, Lou, and her tailless Westie, Max. A prized Arabian steed needs minor medical care–but it’s the rider who grabs Jess’s attention. The handsome young horseman exudes plenty of animal magnetism as he canters across the field…and then takes an inexplicable, fatal fall.

The dead man was one of the finest polo players in the world, but it was no accident that killed him. The culprit was poison. And as Jess soon discovers, a number of people had the means, motive, and opportunity for foul play, from the hostile barn manager to the businessman’s disgruntled wife. But Jess will have to temper her feline instinct with good old-fashioned horse sense if she’s going to stop a killer from leading a certain sleuth to her death.

“Five paws up for Cynthia Baxter’s Reigning Cats & Dogs series!”—Carolyn Hart

5 out of 5 stars Very entertaining!.......2005-09-26

Being a dog lover, and ex-vet tech, I really enjoy the Reigning Cats & Dogs series and hope there will be more to come! The characters are entertaining and it's fun to try to figure out who the killer is - and this time it was a little surprising. Have fun reading this latest book.

5 out of 5 stars Jessica Popper Returns for Another Round of 'Cat and Mouse'.......2005-08-13

Dr. Jessica Popper, DVM, is out on a house call treating Andrew MacKinnon's ailing horse in a posh area of Long Island, when she becomes witness to the fall of Eduardo Garcia, a handsome young polo player, who seems to be one with the stallion he is riding, until he just keels over...dead. With a bare minimum of sleuthing, Jessie quickly learns that Eduardo was one of the finest polo players in the world, being offered million dollar contracts left and right, so it's no wonder that the police categorize his death as murder, instead of an accident. The culprit? Poison. Now, with the persistence of an ace reporter known as Forrester Sloan on her tail, and an inquisitive mind of her own, Jessica must dive head-first into the sea of rich New Yorker's, many of whom have motive, means, and opportunity for wanting the young star dead, to figure out just who was angry enough to do the evil deed, while protecting herself from becoming the next victim.

It's hard to find a book series that gets better with each release, but Cynthia Baxter has managed to pen just that. Jessica Popper and her crew of wild canines, crazy cats, talking birds, and a staring Jackson's chameleon, have returned with two new housemates - one of the four-legged variety, and one of the human persuasion. With a menagerie of suspects - any of whom could be the killer - as well as a marvelous array of facts about the history of polo, and Long Island's upper-class communities, LEAD A HORSE TO MURDER is given an extra dimension that will leave readers begging for more.

4 out of 5 stars fabulous veterinarian amateur sleuth .......2005-06-01

On Long Island's Gold Coast, veterinarian Dr. Jessica Popper goes to Heatherfield Estates to tend to an injured polo horse Braveheart. Though the barn manager, Johnny Ray is nasty, Jessica checks the leg and concludes the steed suffers from inflammation. Jessica explains this to owner Andrew Mac Mackinnon when they hear a scream. They look outside to see a rider on the ground near a horse. Everyone races outside to find polo star Eduardo Garcia from Argentina dead.

Though she goes about her business tending to ailing animals, Jessica has concerns over the death of one of the "Argies" as he was too good a horseman to fall like that especially since she saw how Eduardo and his horse seemed like one creature. She begins to make inquiries not realizing that a vet can get into deep trouble when they play sleuth.

Jessica is a terrific lead character and fans will appreciate the descriptions of her work with animals, for instance helping King the dog with bloat or getting her two canines to heel (this reviewer is envious as my two dogs get me to heel). However, on the other hand, readers will question her lack of horse sense by getting involved in the homicide though the aesthetic seamless perfection of steed and rider she witnessed before Eduardo fell motivates her. Still LEAD A HORSE TO MURDER is a fabulous veterinarian amateur sleuth tale that the sub-genre audience will immensely enjoy while seeking out Cynthia Baxter's delightful previous works (see PUTTING ON THE DOG and DEAD CANARIES CAN'T SING) as this is a pure gold mystery.

Whether you show your dog, or just want him/her to look like a show dog, this is the book for you. As a groomer, I found the book to be a very helpful resource, and I recommend it to anyone interested in Shelties.

5 out of 5 stars ALOT OF DETAIL.......2002-06-03

This is a very informative book for the "newbie" in the world of Sheltie Show grooming. I don't see it really being for the typical pet owner however. Probably too much detail and more than they would want to know! It is really for the beginner show person, however I would recommend having someone already experienced teach you, do not just go by the book! :-))

5 out of 5 stars Collie owners can use this book, too.......2001-07-26

Just about every aspect of sheltie grooming can be applied to collie grooming. It can be a challenge looking at an ungroomed collie and not knowing where to start. This book breaks down the whole process into manageable pieces...ear trimming, foot trimming, line brushing and more. A valuable reference book to keep near your grooming table!

5 out of 5 stars The best book available for grooming your sheltie........1997-10-05

For those of you who are interested in making your sheltie look his or her best this is the book to read. Barb, who is a breeder and handler, takes you step by step through the grooming process. It even works for those of us who do not think we have the nack for grooming. P.S. The art work is great too.

This book has lots of good information for someone interested in grooming the sheltie for the conformation ring, or just wants to learn how to make their pet look their best.

    5 out of 5 stars Excellent Reference.......2001-06-17

At our house, you never know what the kids will bring home next or the parents for that matter. This book has been a quick reference on any new species introduced to our household as far as domesticated animals---we do have a gecko and unfortuately there is no info on exotics in this book. It has become a well worn book as we thumbed through finding answers to problems and also on ways to prevent future problems. We have 3 cats, 2 dogs, a bunch of chickens(cochins and silkies), 2 pigs, a pygmy goat, a shetland sheep and an African Fat tailed Gecko so we needed a book that would cover a lot and this has answered many questions. It has more than paid for itself----if it saves just one vet visit!

5 out of 5 stars THE ANSWERS CAN ALL BE FOUND IN HERE.......2000-08-19

This book more than paid for itself in the first 15 minutes of reading. As the owner of 2 cows, 3 cats, 7 dogs, & 8 goats, I have been using this book as my animal bible. It's written in terms that everyone can understand and the directions are clear and precise. It's saved me many calls and visits to my vet. This is a MUST HAVE book for every pet or animal owner.

I recently checked this book out from the library, and now I must have a copy of my own. I have recently started raising show pigs, and believe me this book will help alot. I have already learned some neat things, and look forward to learning more.

    Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Questionable if you love animals.......2006-09-08

I was acutely made aware of how "careers with animals" is a different concept to "careers for those who *love* animals". The section on farming (which includes veal production) describes its practices so benignly - with no acknowledgement of the horrendous cruelties these poor animals endure. I tossed the book aside in disappointment and disgust. There may well be some useful information in the other sections but the book was already tainted for me. My recommendation is that if you truly care about the welfare of animals you should look elsewhere.

4 out of 5 stars If You Can Talk to the Animals ..........2006-07-31

Ellen Shenk, author of Outdoor Careers, follows up with Careers With Animals, and it is every bit as accessible and readable. All the lists and specific information you will need for planning and executing your search are here--sources, possibilities, definitions, salary ranges. But aside from the practical, the author shines her best light: she makes you think about intangibles--your suitability, your personality, the realities you might encounter with your choice, and the like. As with Outdoor Careers, she includes interviews with "real people" who give their first-person accounts of their everyday vocational experiences.

5 out of 5 stars Career options range from breeding and treating animals to being a show judge or working for a zoo or aquarium.......2005-08-06

Readers who are animal lovers and who dream of working with animals often stop at the idea of being a vet: in actuality, there's so much more available, as Careers With Animals: Exploring Occupations Involving Dogs, Horses, Cats, Birds, Wildlife And Exotics demonstrates. Career options range from breeding and treating animals to being a show judge or working for a zoo or aquarium. An organization by animal type - marine, horses, birds, wild animals - makes it easy to hone in more specifically to careers with particular types of animals. Very highly recommended.

He can do many things your dogs can do and also more...He is as the wind: gentle but sometimes frightening." The clouds close and suddenly one by one countless Sacred Dogs course down from the sky. And so the courage of one determined boy is rewarded by the Great Spirit: The horse, or Sacred Dog, is given to his tribe.

5 out of 5 stars Crazy Visions in the Sky.......2007-03-12

Man, I love anything with crazy visions in the sky - particularly the first chapter of the Biblical book Ezekiel - but the vision in this book is a neat thing to read about too. I just don't get why the buffalo was referenced at the end. Must be a Native American custom to end all stories with some mentioning of a buffalo.

I'm sorry to say I still like non-sacred dogs more than sacred dogs, but I have a very good reason for doing so. Sacred dogs are much more expensive.

      Book Description

When it comes to dealing with Tuerto, the one-eyed stud horse from the next ranch over, Hank's usual approach is not to approach him at all. But when Tuerto breaks loose and charges Little Alfred and his cousins, it's up to Hank to save them.

USA Today calls the hilarious Hank the Cowdog series "...the best family entertainment in years."

Hank is a scruffy, smart-alecky supersleuth with a nose for danger and an eye for the ladies. And as Head of Ranch Security on a West Texas ranch, he's usually up to his ears in all kinds of amusing trouble. Whether he's called upon to bark up the sun, investigate suspicious goings-on, or defend the ranch against marauders, Hank's hilarious, hair-raising adventures will delight readers young and old alike.

4 out of 5 stars My Book Report. by: Clara Makela.......2007-03-13

Hank the cow dog is a hero. He helps people every single day! He is not any ordinary dog, let me tell you! Hank lived on a peaceful farm with an annoying cat Harry, and a nice dog friend Dover; Hank lives with his owner too!
Hank has a problem. There is a horse that will kill or give you a serious injury that lives near the farm! Nobody, I mean nobody, have broken that horse! Dover always shakes whenever he sees Turuto. Hank needs to take care of this problem and fast!
Dover is in training, Hank is supposed to teach him. During training they hear foot steps out on the farming land so Hank scurries to the farming land and finds Turuto out there waiting for something or someone? Turuto was waiting for him! Hank and Dover try to attack but it didn't work, they hurried like a cheetah flying through the air; Turuto still chasing quickly from behind. Hank and Dover tricked Turuto by turning the corner and running under their owner's car. "That was close!" Drover said while breathing hard. "Drover, that was really, close." Hank replied. The next day all the animals in the barn had to have a bath because their owner's mother would be coming! If you get dirty trust me you do not want to know what happens. "Can you smell that Hank? Oh wait you live outside the barn so you can't smell about anything!" Harry the cat said.
Once the breakfast was done the owner brought it outside and gave all the breakfast leftovers to Harry, which was burnt toast and bacon grease. Hank's owner went back inside to take a bath and curl her hair His owner had to come back outside when she was is in her robe and curlers because her son had been playing in the mud she sent him back inside then she noticed Hank was dirty because of drinking that horrible tasting, smelly, bacon grease.... She was mad, stopping across the yard with HUGE steps! She tripped over the wood; she fell when her ankle got caught in the wire.
She started choking me; shaking me like I was a bobble head that did not work. Her mother, who pulled up when she was shaking me, in shock and disgrace, took her daughter inside once she left I saw two girls come out of the car.
One of the girls was Alice, the other was Mary. One of them was holding makeup and the other one was holding hair curlers clothes and other girly things. "NO!!!" and the next thing I know I'm in a dress wearing lipstick and blush, "ha-ha" laughed Harry. "Be quiet, Harry. I'm not the one that gets wet every time that boy comes outside."
When I turned around I saw Turuto he was going after the girls! "Dover! Dover!" WHAT!" Dover cried annoyed "Turuto is going after the girls!!" Drover and I hurried over to the girls. Hank got in front of Turuto and looked into his one eye. Dover was so scared he ran back to the barn with the girls. I jumped on Turuto's neck, he jumped up in the air and slammed me down, I got back up to bite his stomach, then he was down, but it was not over. Turuto got back up and hit me with his hoof! I got back up slowly and weakly; I heard a cheer "GO HANK!" Mary shouted.
I got back up and did my toughest move the claw bite and I got on the neck. He was weak now and he ran off but he wasn't as weak as me I fell down, Alice, Mary, and Sally May, my owners wife. Sally May said," Hank you are crazy, that's why I like you." "Can we keep him?" Mary said anxiously "Sure...Why not."

      5 out of 5 stars A classic Hank story.......2006-06-21

This is one of my favorite Hank stories. It has adventure, romance, and a daring rescue. We have listened to the audio version at least 3 times and it never gets old. If you are a Hank fan already then you'll love this one. If you've never heard the author read Hank books aloud - this would be a great one to start with.

4 out of 5 stars Christopher Cox's wonderful review of "HANK THE COWDOG".......2001-10-26

Hank the Cowdog is a series of books.I have chosen one. It is called the one-eyed killer stud horse. I suggest you read it because it is a real good book. It has black and white pictures in the book. The first few chapters are really funny.

5 out of 5 stars I almost peed my pants.......2000-08-30

This book was hilarious, as all Hank books are! The best part is the sleep talking scene--"foggy doggy mumbo jumbo". This book was also incredibly dumb but so funny I almost peed my pants. Read this book if you want something light and funny.

4 out of 5 stars A Funny book for people of all ages........1999-12-21

A sick dog, A broken ankle, and a dog that was attacked and almost killed, believe or not these are the main events of one of the funniest books ever written. There is a dog named Hank he is head of ranch security at a ranch. He always does dumb things that get him hurt or in trouble with his owner. One of the things he does is eat bacon grease and becomes very sick. But when he tries to do something nice it always seems to backfire and he ends up getting in trouble. If you own a dog it really makes you think how you treat your dog and if you ever talk to your dog. IF you are an adult looking for a fast read or a kid looking to have fun I guarantee you will laugh with this book.
