5 out of 5 stars Small but really useful.......2007-02-11

This book is small but really comprehensive. Through specific examples people that knows the secret of panoramic photography, gives tips & tricks for a good panoramic photo using normal cameras and lenses.
In the beginning i read it very quick but then i discover more more than even in the smallest paragraph there is a nice tip.
The only "bad" is that most of the writers use realviz stitcher as main stitching program. Why this is "bad"? Because the program costs more than 400 euro. There is also a express release around 100 euro but with limited use.
But the tips and tricks are still there. I personally use PTGui with Pano2cube software and i can use most of this books advices. it is highly recommended for the photographer he wants to involved in panoramic photography.

5 out of 5 stars New photographer.......2005-12-17

I came to Moab Utah to take photos of the great national parks and the state park (Dead Horse SP). After two weeks I bought the Really Right Stuff equipment for making horizontal and vertical panoramas. The photoshop CS2 books and the internet suggested that joining them would be easy to do. Hoever, this great book, shows that much more skill is needed in taking the photographs and using the software. The book gives an outline of the steps needed to compose the 8 digital panoramas but does not give exact details because considerable experiment is needed. In the first chapter where 3 images are joined to form an ice fall in an ice cave the photographer took 200 images. In the panoramic beach scene the waves were coninuously moving during the shooting so that an incredible amount of editing was needed to form a great image. This book shows what can be done if skill is used at every step Now I realise how much incredible work Max Lyons had to do to compose his terabyte image of Bryce Canyon. "The Photoshop CS2book for Digital Photographers" has a small chapter on panorams.
For some reason "Assembling Panoramic Photos" is well hidden in the Amazon search terms.

5 out of 5 stars An essential reference which should be a part of any solid photography book collection.......2005-12-05

Few books on photograph go into much detail or depth on handling panorama format photos, which makes the advice of Assembling Panoramic Photos: A Designer's Notebook important. Another feature which lends unique value: leading French photographers and artists present their techniques, translated by William Rodarmor for English readers, with step-by-step examples of technique beginning with initial shots and progressing to specific panoramic techniques. The end result is an essential reference which should be a part of any solid photography book collection.

2 out of 5 stars Short on details.......2005-11-16

A picture may well be worth a thousand words, but 8 pictures doesn't add up to a a book. This book takes the reader through 8 photographs by 8 different photographers who outline the techniques they used to generate them. Although some of the pictures are impressive, this book is a bit short on detail. If you are looking to get started with Panoramic pictures, you'd best start with some other books.

5 out of 5 stars Great stuff for intermediate/advanced photographers..........2005-06-27

Digital cameras and powerful software tools have made panoramic photography much easier than it's been in the past. If you want to see real state-of-the-art panoramic work, you'll like Assembling Panoramic Photos - A Designer's Notebook published by O'Reilly.

Contents: Studio 01 - Waterfalls of Ice - Bertrand Bodin; Studio 02 - At the Restaurant - Arnaud Frich; Studio 03 - Frenzy at Almanarre Beach - Albert Lemoine; Studio 04 - The Workshop - Christophe Noel; Studio 05 - Urban Sphere - Sacha Popovic; Studio 06 - On the Boulevards - Peet Simard; Studio 07 - The Phare des Baleines Lighthouse - Laurent Thion; Studio 08 - Venice - The Orseolo Basin - Gilles Vidal

This book was translated from French by William Rodarmor, and all of the photographers hail from France. The general format of the book takes a particular panoramic photo from the person who created the picture, and then goes into detail about how it was done. This goes everywhere from the thoughts behind the composition, the equipment used to take the raw material, the software used to retouch and stitch the different pictures, and how certain difficulties had to be overcome. There are a number of different types of panoramas, going from traditional wide-angle content to a circular composition wrapped around a point on a sidewalk. This book will serve as both a source of inspiration and a catalog of techniques.

You'll get the most out of this book if you are intermediate to advanced in both digital photography and Photoshop. A number of stitching programs are used in the images, so you'll learn why some people prefer one over the other. If you're just Joe Schmoe with a digital camera and a stitching program, you'll probably be a little lost here. These photographers are professionals, and the results they produce are professional. They understand the tools of their trade very well, and it's that knowledge that allows them to get these types of results. So don't feel bad if the book is a little beyond you when you first start reading. But if you're willing to work at it and try out some of the techniques shown here, you'll soon be showing off some interesting results.

5 out of 5 stars Terrfifc book on a terrific subject........2004-05-25

Thoroughly enjoyable. Makes me want to drop everything and run out and buy a pano camera. Binding, as described earlier, is not the best and probably will have to be nursed a little to maintain its longevity but a lovely book full of inspirational material.

4 out of 5 stars Fine book on an obscure topic.......2003-08-21

This is a very helpful survey of Panoramic Photography. It covers the broad history from the earliest days of photography to today. He has portfolios from a collection of current panormaic photographers that gives a good sense of what people are up to.

There is a comprehensive discussion of panoramic cameras, including obscure hand-built models.

My only suggestions for improvement are:
1. A greatly expanded discussion of digital panorama hardware and software.
2. More careful editing of the text. It is repetitive at points and seems a bit rambling.
3. A discussion of how to mount and display these images would be helpful.

I don not agree with Barry Schmetter's review
He blames the publisher for not having a bigger, more expensive book. Panoramas are an odd shape (wierd aspect ratio) that complicates printing. I think this book works well. Wonderful color reproduction in a well-made book.

All-in-all I highly recomment this new book on Panoramic Photography.

3 out of 5 stars Great book, but shabby publishing.......2003-03-23

Stretch is a great introduction to the field of panoramic photography. Nick Meers not only showcases some amazing examples of panoramic photography, but describes the wide variety of cameras and working techniques used to make the photographs. This is probably the best treatment of panoramic photography I've ever read and it makes me want to run out an purchase a horribly expensive panoramic camera.

Shame on Rotovision for printing an undersized version of this book on cheap paper stock more suitable for a magazine. The book would be spectacular in the larger format it deserves and on a decent paper stock. As it stands the photographs are unsatisfyingly small, the printing mediocre, and the binding suspect. Nick gets 5 stars for his efforts, but the substandard Rotovision presentation knocks off two stars with its shabby publishing job.

Book Description

An astonishing collection of early panoramic photographs, many up to 5 feet wide.

This book is both a history of an unusual camera and a splendid display of its product. "Yard longs," as the Cirkut camera's huge panoramic photographs were called, caused a sensation after the camera's introduction in the early twentieth century. Cirkut cameras were used to record scenic vistas, epic events, and group photographs of conventioneers, workers, soldiers, and students. Here, with many foldouts that show the prints in their full glory, are such historic moments as the building of the Panama Canal, the sunken battleship Maine in Havana Harbor, the crash of the dirigible Shenandoah, the fiftieth anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg, the 1908 Wellesley graduating class, and a very early race at the Indianapolis Speedway. More mundane subjects—a bathing beauty contest, locomotive factory workers—are equally fascinating in this format. Collectively these panoramas form a remarkable portrait of America at the turn of the last century. 16" x 11", 80 photographs; 8 4-panel, 2 6-panel gatefolds.

5 out of 5 stars Totally fun book and really well printed.......2007-09-20

The above headline pretty much sums it up. Sorry for ending with a preposition ( I should have said "an" to be silly).

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2007-07-07

I've never seen a photo book quite like this. This is an oversized book and when many of the prints are folded out they really are a yard long. While many of these picture are not artistic masterpieces, they are masterpieces of documentary phototgraphy. The level of detail these photos hold is something to see and you get a very good feel for the time and place of the picture.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely stunning picture book...!.......2007-05-06

I have an interest in panoramic photography, currently own a Widelux camera (can take a 120 degree pano on 35mm film), and am looking to buy a Kodak Panoram which performs similarly but on 120 format film. If I could afford a Cirkut camera, and the film and chemistry costs, I'd have one.

I'm also a history buff.

"America by the Yard" combines history and panoramic photography in a series of stunning images that seem to draw the viewer in. Consider it a series of graphic, high-resolution photos showing America growing up from circa 1900 to almost 1950.

The photos have so much detail, and so much width, that the photos continue to reveal new details each time I "read" it.

When showing the book to friends and co-workers, it has the same effect on them: lots of "oooohs" and "aaaaahhhhs" and exclamations.

An amazing book. I can't reccomend it highly enough.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring, Educational, and Insightful.......2007-01-06

The author obviously has a deep respect for the history of photography. The images, reproductions, and explanations are excellent. This is a beautiful book that every panoramic photographer could relish for many years to come.

Book Description

Bestselling author Lee Frost presents an all-encompassing, completely practical guide to creating great images in the increasingly popular panoramic format.

Panoramic photography is more accessible and more popular now than ever before. The launch of affordable cameras has been partly responsible for this, putting a panoramic system within the reach of most enthusiast photographers. Digital technology has helped too--it is now relatively straightforward to shoot a sequence of images and stitch them together using computer software.

Here Lee Frost leads readers through all the information they will need to create successful panoramic images--from choosing equipment and looking at different ways to produce panoramics, to applying filters, printing and displaying pictures, and much more.

Particular attention is paid to approaching the composition of panoramics, and overcoming compositional difficulties. Frost also offers readers inspiration for more creative uses of panoramic photography, showing how it can be used not only for landscapes and architecture, but also action, portraits, reportage, and other subjects.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding book on Panorama techniques.......2007-08-13

This is an excellent book for those interested in making photographic panoramas. It is a little outdated, but still covers the basics of making panoramas with a digital camera. The author is british, so a little of the terminology seems a bit strange to Americans (in a delightful sort of way). It is chock full of beautiful panoramas and the author's explanations of how he made them are very valuable. Good technique is timeless and this book is crammed with useful techniques as well as a very good photograhic philosophy. Being a photographer myself, I very much appreciate Mr. Frost sharing his valuable experience, opinions and outstanding panoramas with us! Lee frost discusses, and evaluates (objectively), all the panoramic cameras I am aware of, and some that I was not. I highly recommend this book for those interested in this subject and for those who simply want to look at and appreciate his beautiful photographs.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent starting point on all that is panoramic.......2007-02-02

When I first began to browse this book I thought that there was nothing new here, especially for a photographer with some experience. It was almost a retelling of other "how to" photographic books, covering basics such as filling the frame, foreground interest and the rule of thirds.

However, on reading through it in more detail, it did cover issues specifically related to panoramic images, such as exposure, filters (especially polarisers), and metering. There were a number of helpful tips, such as using blue-tac to secure filters and center ND filters.

There were some omissions, such as stitching backs and pinhole panoramas, but all in all it covered the equipment side very well. The section on digital stitching was adequate but did not cover the issue of lens nodal points and specialized panoramic tripod adapters. There are now photographers creating giant digital mosaics that are at the 1gig file size level using stitching software such as PTAssembler and hardware such as the Panosaurus Panoramic Tripod Head. Imagine turning a Canon 10D into a 100megapixel camera!

In the end I awarded this book four stars only because I could not award 3.5. I admit though that this is an excellent starting point for someone new to panoramic photography, and all in one handy book.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!.......2006-09-08

I bought a 2nd hand Xpan (1st gen) a year ago but never really know what to do with it. It was left on the shelf when I bought a digital SLR.

After going through this book, I'm back to film and I never leave home without my Xpan.

4 out of 5 stars Panatastic.......2006-03-03

This is a great book for anyone considering panoramic photography or for those who are new to the format.

5 out of 5 stars Best hands-on book on panoramic photography around.......2005-10-28

In recent years, the very portable Hasselblad X-Pan camera has done a lot to (re-)popularise the panoramic format. In addition, digital cameras allow for easy stitching of separate exposures into elaborate panorama images.

In the wake of these developments, a flurry of books discussing or showcasing panoramic photography have appeared. Lee Frost's book brings us the best of both worlds. On the one hand it is a very thorough and practical discussion of the nuts and bolts of making panorama pictures. But given the profusion of eye catching and alluring images on its pages, it can serve as an excellent coffee table book too.

As there are only a few pages on creating "digital joiners", the book is primarily intended for those photographers wanting to make panoramic pictures with a dedicated (analogue) panorama camera. The book's material is conventionally and usefully organised in chapters discussing equipment, composition, exposure and creative techniques.

The book opens with a very complete survey of flatback, swing-lens and rotational cameras on the market today (including even recent additions - such as the Chinese Widepan and Fotoman cameras). Frost discusses pros, cons and quirks of the many cameras he has used himself. Even an experienced panorama photographer will pick up useful things here. Less conventional solutions - such as using a panoramic adaptor on standard medium format cameras or a panoramic back on a view camera - are included in the discussion too.

The chapters focusing on the practice of taking panorama pictures are all eminently practical and complete. The discussion is hands-on and doesn't avoid specifics: exactly what is needed to carry over the learning to one's own practice in the field. In fact, these sections are recommended reading for any photographer, not just those interested in panorama pictures.

Very interesting also are the closing chapters on presenting and selling panoramics, where Frost gives us a peek behind the curtains on how he runs his business as a professional photographer.

The tone of the book is pleasingly personal (although not quite as personal as Barry Thornton used to be). Despite the wealth of practical tips and hints, Frost manages to convey the excitement of practicing this kind of photography in a narrative that makes frequent reference to specific moments or experiences in his development as professional photographer. That results in a text that is approachable and pleasant to read, though never banal. The personal tone is reinforced by the extensive captions to the photos, in which Frost narrates the specific conditions in which the picture was taken. Very helpful also is that all photos in the book are annotated with camera, lens, filters and film used.

A final appreciative note, perhaps, for the pleasing layout of the book and its careful production.

2 out of 5 stars AMERICAN CITIES.......2006-10-14

This is a very mediocre book with grainy images that look like some of the exact same photos I've seen in other books, I mean the EXACT same photos. The text reads like a chamber of commerce pamplet, absolutely no research or thought went into the blurb on each city, I mean if you don't know that Cleveland has the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame you must be living under a shell, it's that basic and each city gets barely a glace. I read the previous reviews and I just wonder how many books of this kind they have seen because this one is average at best. If you happen to find it in the bargain section at Border's for five dollars, then I recommend you picking it up, but if not, just flip through it and leave it where you found it.

4 out of 5 stars The well-traveled will love this book.......2006-08-26

The pictures in this book cover the spectrum of American cities from Metropilis to hometown, from Albuquerque to Wichita. It includes beautiful 2-page panoramic spreads of each featured city's skyline along with other photo highlights from the city and a few basic facts. If you've traveled much of the US you will enjoy paging through the places you've been. The book is quite big to begin with, so when you open up to a two page spread you really feel like you're right there soaring above these places.

The cities included are:
Albuquerque, NM - Anaheim, CA - Anchorage, AK - Atlanta, GA - Atlantic City, NJ - Austin, TX - Baltimore, MD - Baton Rouge, LA - Boise, ID - Charleston, SC - Charlotte, NC - Chicago, IL - Cincinnati, OH - Cleveland, OH - Columbus, OH - Dallas, TX - Denver, CO - Des Moines, IA - Detroit, MI - El Paso, TX - Fort Worth, TX - Fresno, CA - Honolulu, HI - Houston, TX - Indianapolis, IN - Jacksonville, FL - Kansas City, MO - Las Vegas, NV - Long Beach, CA - Los Angeles, CA - Memphis, TN - Miami, FL - Milwaukee, WI - Minneapolis, MN - Mobile, AL - Nashville, TN - New Orleans, LA - New York City, NY - Oklahoma City, OK - Philadelphia, PA - Phoenix, AZ - Pittsburgh, PA - Portland, OR - Reno, NV - Sacramento, CA - Salt Lake City, UT - San Antonio, TX - San Diego, CA - San Francisco, CA - San Jose, CA - Seattle, WA - St. Louis, MO - Tampa, FL - Tucson, AZ - Tulsa, OK - Virginia Beach, VA - Vergennes, VT - Washington, D.C. - Wichita, KS

5 out of 5 stars Photographs of Many American Cities.......2005-12-04

This book is a coffee table type book that contains photographs of American Cities. Every major American city is included as well as many smaller regional cities. There's not more than a few pages on any city so don't get this book expecting detailed coverage of any city, but if you like buildings and large photos of city skylines from places as small as Butte, Montana to as large as New York with very few places omitted in between, you will like this book.

Its weaknesses: there are usual things (though from unusual point of view, 15% of the book is devoted to some interiors of shops and bars(do you want to pay for product placement?, the disk is attached to this book, which includes some digital panoramas, included in the book (however, my Quick Time Player did not manage to find some files (most interesting I should admit) though it seems they are there).

Book Description

One of the nation's premier tourist destinations, the Finger Lakes of upstate New York offer long lake views, rolling hills, spellbinding sky patterns, and inviting villages. In this book, master photographer Kristian Reynolds uses panoramic camera technology to reveal a landscape of drama, history, romance, and exceptional beauty.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Predictable But Pleasant.......2005-09-07

Reynolds uses a panoramic camera for the views in this book. Whether one cares for this sort of photo with itsunconventional proportions may be a matter of taste. The subjects represented are fairly conventional for this sort of picture book, and several similar volumes about the Finger Lakes are available. Little textual information is provided. On the other hand, Reynolds is a photographer of the first rank, with a good eye and technical command of the medium. The book is handsome. For this reader, it is less rewarding, however, than his subsequent "Wine Tour of the Finger Lakes," where the pictorial subjects are less predictable, while the informative text by Grady Wells makes the content more substantive. That one is a full five stars!

5 out of 5 stars Finger Lakes Panoramas.......1999-11-26

I live in the Finger Lakes area (Elmira) and I have either driven, hiked, or bicycled around all the lakes and sailed across several. This is a wonderful piece of work and all scenes are easily recognized. A great compilation.

5 out of 5 stars Beautifully-done portrayal of the Finger Lakes area........1999-11-19

As a previous resident of the Finger Lakes area, I can personally vouch for the beauty of the area. Mr. Reynolds has captured it as well as any human being can capture the glory of nature's beauty. I would highly recommend this book to anyone with a taste for looking at beautiful places, beautifully photographed. Mr. Reynolds has presented an excellent talent with this beautiful book. I look forward to his next effort.
