5 out of 5 stars Necessary for any surfer going to Costa Rica.......2007-08-31

This book was a lifesaver. You gotta read it BEFORE you go out, because at one spot we hit, turned out to be alligator infested.
But this book is essential and tells spots that would normally be a mystery. Breaks on and off the beaten path.

2 out of 5 stars Nothing New!!.......2007-04-02

I am returning to costa rica for the third time, and bought this book thinking there would be some deep researched information that may reveal hidden secrets that I had not yet explored. I was wrong. The book provides little information that a travelling surfer (one that really surfs) doesn't already know, or really needs. If you like for your entire trip to be scheduled before hand this book will provide you the information to do so. Good only for the first time surfer Costa Traveller without an internet connection or hasn't discovered google.

3 out of 5 stars Best surf guide I've seen but still...........2007-01-09

All and all this is a decent guidebook. It gives you a breakdown of a lot of surfspots in Costa Rica. However, the information is a little outdated. The names of many hotels/restaurants/hostels, changed many years ago and this hasn't been reflected in the guide. Further, the author seems to mainly list the more upscale establishments. I personally am a shoestring budget surfer, so I didn't find his hotel reccommendations that useful since they seem to mostly be in the upper price range. I also found that many of the spots he claims will be uncrowded, are absolutely packed (Ostional). His information regarding spot specifics is also a bit weak. He usually states something like "Works best on Low tide/High tide", but I didn't find these tips to be true as it is very much dependent on the swell direction and how the sand banks formed this year.

Overall I reccommend it, but when in Costa Rica it is best to ask people there for information rather than relying on the book.

5 out of 5 stars The Surfer's Guide to Costa Rica by Mike Parise.......2006-03-26

Simpy a must have for anyone traveling to Costa Rica. Don't think too much about it, it would be foolish not to buy. It will definitly pay for itself many times over.

5 out of 5 stars A board, towel and this book.......2005-12-14

are the only things you need for Costa Rica. I saw this on Cutback.com, bought it and it told me everything I needed to know.

5 out of 5 stars Looking Forward.......2007-04-02

My trip to Nicaragua has been postponed but it looks like this book will be as helpful to me as the other guides in the Lonely Planet series have been.

5 out of 5 stars Lonely Planet is the best out there..........2007-01-16

Lonely Planet is by far the best travel series for independently-minded, backpacking folk. That notwithstanding, my only question for this particular book would have to be: Why did Lonely Planet put Nicaragua and El Salvador together in one book? This seems a bit arbitrary, since (as a native-born Nicaraguan) these are both very different countries with substantially different things to offer a traveler. Additionally, both countries are vibrant enough to each warrant a separate book. But all in all, I think it's still the definitive guidebook for travelers.

Book Description

This is the first paperback version of the second edition of the popular A Guide to the Birds of Panama. In the second edition, published in 1989, the authors expanded information on the birds of Costa Rica, Nicaragua, and Honduras: approximately 200 new species were added to the material in the 1976 edition. Over 300 additional species, some of them Panamanian, were illustrated. Sixteen new plates were added, and three of the original plates were replaced by improved versions. Throughout the book changes were made to accommodate the explosion in knowledge of the birds of Panama and nearby areas and of neotropical birds in general. The basic sequence and systematics of the AOU 1983 Check-list were adopted. Also included in the revised edition was expanded and updated information on birdfinding in Panama, prepared with the assistance of two of Panama's best resident birders. The book also contains a special section outlining developments in Panama ornithology and conservation. "A sophisticated treatment of one of the world's richest avifaunas."--The Quarterly Review of Biology

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Birds of Panama.......2007-01-08

I would recommend that anyone interested in the birds of Panama buy this book, however it is not the only book available about the birds of Panama. There is the Guia de Las Aves de Panama by Ridgely and Gawynne (ISBN 958-95245-0-8) and An Illustrated Field Guide to the Birds of Panama by Ponce y Muschett (ISBN 84-89127-76-X). It is best to have as much information as possible before a trip even if all these books have their shortcomings. Robert B Gillies, Volcan, Chiriqui, The Republic of Panama.

4 out of 5 stars Strong overall with a few significant flaws.......2006-08-18

The text in this book is excellent, with good descriptions of the various species and nice writeups of behavioral habits. However if you want to use the book as a field guide to identify the birds you are seeing, there are some flaws that make this hard to do:

1. Not all birds are represented in the color plates. None of the 15 swift species, for example, get an entry on the plates.
2. Some birds have no picture at all, not even a black and white line drawing in the text. Lesser Yellow-headed Vulture, for example.
3. The index is incomplete. Try finding a saltator in the index.
4. There are two sets of plates. Most birds are in the first set, but there is a seemingly arbitrary set of birds relegated to "additional" plates near the back of the book. This makes it hard to do the tried and true method of scanning plates to help you quickly identify the bird you just saw.

So as a field guide this book probably merits only 3 stars. But to be fair it's not labeled as a field guide, but rather a "Guide to the Birds of Panama." Given the high quality of the text, it fills that role nicely.

5 out of 5 stars A Guide to the Birds of Panama.......2006-03-01

Book great. Helped me identify some of the birds I saw when in Panama/CR recently. Illustrations made it easy to recognize the birds.

4 out of 5 stars The only guide out there.......2005-02-16

I visit Panama at least once a year, and this book is the first thing I pack for every trip. There's simply no other field guide out there. Although the book is over due for a thorough update (of both taxonomy and range reports), it's still the best source for identifying birds in Panama. All the guides and researchers that I've met over the years use this book. One of the most useful parts is the section that describes the best birding spots in Panama, as most of these places have remained largely unchanged. The plates are very good, more than adequate.
The book's a bit on the heavy side though. I usually go out birding for an entire day (6 am to 6 pm) carrying water, food, a camera and heavy telephoto lens, a tripod and binoculars. Even so, I've always resisted cutting out the plates, and end up taking the whole thing with me into the jungle. If the publisher were to make available a separate smaller booklet with only the plates, I'd definitely buy it. My back would be very grateful indeed!
Conclusion: If you're planning a birdwatching trip to Panama, you NEED this book!

4 out of 5 stars Best available field guide to the birds of Panama.......2003-06-10

Ridgely's guide is the best - and really the only - available field guide covering all the species of birds in the nation of Panama. While it is useful and serves most purposes, it has been over a decade since the second edition was released, and it is more than due for an overhaul and expansion. The most necessary would be the addition of range maps, that would make the book infinitely more useful in planning a trip. At the very least, there should be a single, detailed map of Panama, indicating the locations mentioned in the range descriptions! Also, it would be better to limit the scope of the book entirely to Panama, as Costa Rica and other areas to the north are covered by other guides, and the pertinent information for those areas in this book are scant, at best. Then, the isolated plates in the back need to be intergrated, as do the plates of Darien specialties, etc. Many species have been recently added to the Panama list, or split, etc, and those species need to be added. But, all this aside, this book should enable the identification of most Panama birds, and remains an indispensible resource for any birder traveling to that country.

Book Description

This new and thoroughly revised edition of Nicaragua details the country's unique history, culture, social reality, economics, foreign relations, and politics. Its historical coverage considers Nicaragua from before independence as well as during the nationalist liberal era, the US marine occupation, the Somoza dictatorship, the Sandinista regime, and the conservative restoration following 1990. The Fourth Edition documents how the more enduring reality of this Central American country may not be the Sandinista Revolution but the historical and ongoing interventions by which the United States - the "eagle" to the north - continues to shape Nicaraguan political, economic, and social life. The new edition also includes a fully updated annotated bibliography. Praise for the third edition:

5 out of 5 stars Accessible, well written overview of Nicaragua's history and failed attempts to free itself from U.S. imperialism .......2006-08-01

The leader of the U.S. trained and equipped National Guard Anastasio Somoza Garcia seized power in Nicaragua in 1936. He was an S.O.B., but he was our S.O.B. as Franklin Roosevelt immortally said privately in 1939 when Somoza visited him in Washington D.C. Somoza wanted the National Guard officers and enlisted men to enrich themselves in mafia-style rackets such as prostitution, according to Walker, so they would be dependent on him for their self-enrichment and would thus constitute a force immune from popular discontent. Somoza Garcia's son Luis succeeded him after his assassination in 1956. Luis set up a lot of bureaucracies supposedly devoted to social services and economic planning, but these were in reality mainly used as a vehicle to funnel U.S. aid money to the Somoza family and its cronies. Walker cites the particularly blatant case of how the government used U.S. aid money after an earthquake in December 1972 completely destroyed Managua.

Anastasio Somoza Debayle Jr. took over as president from his brother in 1967. Anastasio Jr. reinstated a "state of siege" and sent the National Guard into the Countryside, where the (FSLN) Sandinistas were involved in stimulating peasant activism, after a December 1974 successful hostage taking operation by the Sandinistas. The Guard proceeded to rape and kill and pillage thousands. Many American Catholic clerical and lay workers witnessed these actions and the U.S. congress was moved to hold hearings.

In 1977, President Carter suspended military aid to Somoza in order to force him to relax somewhat his censorship of the press, thinking that the U.S. could afford for Somoza to do so without the status quo in Nicaragua being disrupted. However, in early 1978, after increasing massacres of civilians in the tens of thousands by the National Guard Carter resumed economic and military aid to Somoza. The uprising had begun in early 1978 after the assassination of newspaper editor Pedro Joaquin Chamarro. The Carter administration, in conjunction with the Organization of American States, eventually tried to enforce its policy of "Somocismo sin Somoza"....

Walker describes how the Carter administration refused to send arms to the Sandinistas and looked the other way as the military oligarchy in Honduras allowed remnants of the National Guard, helped by trainers from the Argentine neonazi military regime, to organize the force which would become the Contras. ....

The Reaganites refused to sell arms to the Sandinistas, cut off all aid, and successfully pressured the French to end an arms deal with the Sandinistas in 1981. Increasingly, the Sandinistas were forced to rely on Soviet block arms. Walker notes that the rifles, AK-47's and tanks that the Nicaraguans received from the Soviet block were small in number and often old and decrepit. Clearly the Sandinistas were seeking military aid from the Soviet Block because the Reaganites had launched a full scale proxy terrorist war against them. The Contras deliberately attacked civilian infrastructure and murdered teachers, doctors and engineers. The attacks on oil storage and port facilities by the Contras in 1983 and 84' caused Venezuela and Mexico to suspend oil shipments--Nicaragua was then forced to turn to the Soviet block for its petroleum needs. The FSLN managed to maintain fairly extensive economic and political relations with Western Europe and capitalist countries in the third world but the U.S. media preferred to ignore this.

In the early 80's, Walker notes the Sandinistas achieved some remarkable successes. Nicaragua's infant mortality rate was reduced from 121 per 1000 in 1978 to 90 per 1000 in 1983. The Kissinger Commission report of 1984 blamed the Sandinistas because it said that Nicaragua's GDP was reduced by 38 percent from 1977 to 1983. This was deceptive, Walker notes, because that statistic had in it the last two and a half years of the rule of Somoza when the country was largely destroyed. In the years 1980-83, Walker notes, the Nicaraguan economy actually grew by an average of 7 percent, while the rest of Central America's economies declined by 14 percent.

In spite of some mild repression (not comparable to U.S. backed terror in Guatemala and El Salvador) in response to the country being under U.S. backed terrorist attack, reactionary newspapers like La Prensa were allowed to violently attack the government and receive funding from the CIA. The CIA instigated protests by the Nicaraguan opposition which attempted to provoke the Sandinistas into repressive actions, Walker quotes House Speaker Jim Wright revealing in January 1988. Meanwhile, in U.S. client states Guatemala and El Salvador newspaper offices were being blown up by the military backed death squads, and newspaper editors were left disemboweled by the side of the road. In 1984, the Sandinistas had an election which was judged free and fair by a wide variety observer delegations, including from the British parliament and House of Lords, Danish and Irish Parliaments, etc. Disruption of opposition rallies by Sandinista "turbas" only occurred about 5 times out of 250 instances according to election analysts. Walker quotes a statistic to the effect that 46 of the 48 top Contra officers had been officers in Somoza's National Guard--I think he got this from Edgar Chamarro, the former Contra spokesman.

The U.S. escalated its economic strangulation and terror attacks on Nicaragua and the latter was eventually forced to devote the majority of its budget to defense. In 1990, the Sandinistas held an election, as the 1987 constitution had mandated them to do and the Nicaraguan electorate, under the threat of continued U.S. funding of Contra terrorists if the Sandinistas won, voted in the UNO. The U.S. had achieved its goal of restoring the old Somoza era social order within Nicaragua. Walker gives an extensive discussion of the post-1990 social order. Nicaragua ranked 61st on the UN Human Development Index in 1990; it ranked 116th by 2000.
Walker gives an instructive look at how the miserable rural proletariat of Nicaragua was created by the late 19th century.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Like Nicaragua itself--just OK.......2007-01-12

A solid guidebook, but I completely agree with other reviewers that the author often makes places sound better than they truly are. Take Granada: if you go there expecting a colonial jewel in a beautiful setting, like I did, you'll be disappointed. It is, at best, a very poor man's Spain, and that's generous. The book had me convinced I should persuade mi esposa to expatriate there...nope. There's a relatively small district that's quite charming, but even that is far dirtier than it should be considering it's potential for tourism, national pride, etc.

I'm not saying you shouldn't go to Granada, visit Nicaragua, or buy this book. Just don't buy all the hype this book is selling. The author creates high expectations, and if you lose sight of the fact that he's talking about the 2nd poorest country in Latin America you'll be disappointed like me. There are far, far, far better places in the world...maybe I'm just spoiled having visited several of them. If you set low expectations you'll probably enjoy it. We traveled on about $10/pp/day so high standards wasn't an issue, just false expectations. Happy Travels.

5 out of 5 stars "The Good Book".......2006-09-04

Since this is the ONLY guidebook available for Nicaragua, we could have been stuck with whatever they gave us. But this book is quite good. The writing is clever, informative, and thorough. I used it every step of the way while traveling -- for sights to see, food to eat, and places to stay. It was such a companion for the trip, I just refer to it as "The Good Book."

3 out of 5 stars A good, average guide........2006-06-06

Honestly, I only purchased this book because of the lack of options in Nicaragua travel guides. I normaly purchase the DK eyewitness series, or AAA spiral guides, because of their pictures and maps. But, after spending a month in Nicaragua in Jan 06, I definately recommend this book. Alot of the prices are out of date, especially in regards to the hotels and stuff... but the places and locations never change, and the guide is, for the most part, right on.

5 out of 5 stars Moon Nicaragua.......2006-03-23

This is a very good book. I've had other travel books on Nicaragua and Central America and this is, by far, the best. I also found it to be very accurate. I was quite surprised. Outstanding.

5 out of 5 stars My Nicaraguan born relatives were consulting the book for information.......2007-09-24

I bought this book in anticipation of my week long Nicaraguan trip. It accompanied me throughout the trip and it was invaluable. Being a non Spanish speaker accompanying my Nicaraguan-born relatives on the trip, I found it funny that I was constantly being asked to look in my book to get information on where we should eat, where we were going and what certain rules were. I especially loved the sections on cultural norms. At 29 years old, I read these sections and thought, " So that's why my mom does that!" Especially the part where it says Nicaraguans point with their lips. My mom was the only person I knew who did that and the realization that there is a whole country of lip pointers was funny to learn about. Even if you are not going to live in Nicaragua, I highly recommend this book as a prerequisite before traveling there. Yeah, you may not care for certain sections dealing with home buying and obtaining visas but the parts that deal with describing certain areas and the maps provided are very helpful. A Great Buy!!

5 out of 5 stars Much needed information.......2007-05-12

The info in this book is really helpful ... contains things you need to know but may not have thought to ask. It is easy to understand and is also entertaining. It's worth buying, especially if you're considering living in Nica.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book on Expat life in Nicaragua.......2007-04-04

Moon Living Abroad in Nicaragua proved to be a wonderful resource as my family and I began to make our fanatasy of living (at least part-time) in Nicaragua a reality. The authors provide lots of details on daily life as well as extensive profiles of Nicaraguan cities and towns across the country. I most appreciated the diverse voices of the expat community that are included in this book. While both authors seem to have many years of experience living in Nicaragua between them, the additional perspectives increase the book's breadth. This book got me through a long winter in Seattle!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome book!!!!.......2006-12-31

This book provides PRICELESS information to those traveling to or planning on living in Nicaragua. Joshua & Randy have a way of describing the country and its' beautiful inhabitants with a charming mix of personal experience and important facts. I read the book about 2 weeks before my Nica trip and would have been a bit lost without the book- especially the section on cultural norms. Thanks for the book, gentleman. I highly reccomend it!

5 out of 5 stars Required for a trip to Nicaragua.......2006-08-21

This was an excellent book!!! Went on our first trip to Nicaragua and this book was invaluable!!! It is so well written that we read it cover to cover and is organized in such a manner as to make it very easy to find what you're looking for. Would highly recommend it!!!

5 out of 5 stars Best Guidebook I've Read.......2006-05-05

This is easily the most entertaining guidebook I've ever read. I found myself reading entire paragraphs or descriptions out loud to my fiance. The problem with most guidebooks is that they're incredibly boring to read and often leave out the most useful information. This book is the exception! Leonardi tells you exactly what you most need or want to know--such as how quickly you'll want to get out of a particular town you can't avoid passing through, at which hotel you might want to keep your shoes on when walking across the floor at night (yikes), or which local hotel offers the best boat rentals. This book is incredibly useful and a real page-turner--I actually read it almost cover-to-cover.

4 out of 5 stars This is a very impressive guide which I strongly recommend........2003-06-08

I used this guide during my three weeks in Nicaragua and enjoyed Leonardi's informative writing style. This handbook is more exhaustive, and more up to date, than "Footprint's Central America & Mexico Handbook".

This handbook's recommendations for accommodations/restaurants are right on the money and valuable. This guide is up-to-date and I found his recommendations to always be valid. In fact, his is one of the few guides that will tell you, candidly, no punches pulled, what he thinks: very good seafood, bad paella", "attentive service, mediocre food".

Richard Leonardi's writing is succinct and unencumbered by the superfluous. He gives you a solid mental picture, within a paragraph or two, of what to expect and how you can enjoy it.

I really enjoyed his "Further Reading & Cinema" and the history, economic, culture and environment sections are sufficient, but I would encourage you to also take with you the excellent book, "In Focus Nicaragua" (see my review).

Frustrating, and found in all Footprint guides, is the cost guide they use for accommodations. Instead of just stating what the price per room is, in dollars, they complicate it and give you a code table that you will often have to flip back and consult to remember what the cost represents. For example, a hotel that is LL=$150+, A=$46-$65. There is a better way than codes.

Leonardi mentions safety in his introduction to Nicaragua, but I found no mention of the rising problems with crime and gangs in Managua (Capital of Nicaragua). For the past few years... the area around `La Catedral Vieja' has become dangerous, an area for violent crime. In fact, when I asked to go to this area in the daytime, the taxi drivers told me be careful, using the words: "peligroso, peligroso". While I at the Old Cathedral's I talked with the resident shoe-shine man, and he also told me that this area was now very dangerous at night. He said he leaves every day at 5pm because, "me gusto mi vida."

That said, this is a very impressive guide which I strongly recommend. For those going to various Central American countries I would recommend "Footprint's Central America & Mexico Handbook". Strongly Recommended 4.5 stars

5 out of 5 stars Best Guide Book Choice.......2003-04-18

I traveled to Nicaragua with a friend and we each brought different guide books. I brought the Footprint guide and I was very, very happy that I did. The historical and cultural information was much more complete in this book. It had city maps and included places and information that other books did not.

Perhaps the most telling recommendation that I could give doesn't come from me. I took Spanish classes at a school (Casa Xalteva) in Granada, Nicaragua. The school had a number of guide books available for students to flip through, but the one they recommended was the Footprint guide!

5 out of 5 stars If you are going to Nicaragua, take this book!.......2003-02-06

A wonderful guide! With this book as your companion, you don't need to worry about the unknowns of travelling in Nicaragua. The author takes you off the beaten path when appropriate - and tells you when it would be a waste of time. A wonderful, truthful depiction of every place we visited.

    2 out of 5 stars True adventure!.......2007-09-17

You have to love true adventure if you are to come to Nicaragua.
You will feel alive and connected to "life" so pack the essentials and come!

3 out of 5 stars Useful information, but in need of an editor........2006-09-21

Having spent a fair amount of time in Nicaragua, and considered living there, I would say that this book contains accurate information and probably helpful perspectives on many things. If you are thinking about living and/or investing in Nicaragua, I would say this would be a must-have. Even one little piece of information or advice could make a big difference. Its a valuable resource.

That said, this is the worst-written book I can remember reading. Ever. It was badly in need of an editor, although the writer, Tim Rogers, claims to be an editor himself. Incorrect spelling and poor word choices and sentence structure abound. If there were any similar books on this topic, I would not recommend this title.

Also, the book is pretty heavily padded with filler. For instance, the verb conjugations used with 'vos' are useful to have. (I've never actually seen the rules written down anywhere before, as most Spanish textbooks don't discuss 'vos', but it is used all the time in Nicaragua.) But do we really need a list of elementary Spanish vocabulary, which anybody who has even a prayer of actually having a conversation in Nicaragua would already know? It could have been left out. And the metric conversion chart? That is basic reference material, hardly necessary in a specialty book like this. Similar examples could be multiplied. The ultimate example of padding is the fact that entire paragraphs are simply duplicated, appearing in two different places in the book.

In spite of its deficiencies, though, this book seems to be accurate and useful for English-speaking/reading people considering moving to or investing in Nicaragua. I didn't come across anything that I knew to be incorrect. It matches up with my experience in the country. I recommend this book for the time being, but somebody could easily write a better book on the subject. And they oughta.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful source for expats or expat hopefuls.......2006-05-26

First off, this is not a guidebook with information about hotels or restaurants, BUT it is a helpful guide for people thinking about living/investing in Nicaragua and who want to learn what to expect as an expat.

Good insider info from Mr. Rogers, who is an American journalist living in Nicaragua writing for an English-language newspaper and the Miami Herald.

The book is funny, too. A recommended read for people who are seriously interested in Nicaragua, and for people who already live there.

5 out of 5 stars The Nicaragua Bible.......2006-04-27

Tim Rogers has written "The Bible" for all who are interested in either living and or investing in the new Nicaragua. He knows the country inside out, and shares his unique and sensitive perspective with his readers. If you only buy one book on Nicargua, this should be it!

Thank god for this guide. I just moved to Nicaragua and set up a small business. It has really helped me get established. I recommend it to anyone who wants to live or invest here. It is worth every penny of the cover price and more.

1 out of 5 stars map of nicaragua.......2007-03-12

This map is outdated. It lacks a table showing mileage between towns. It lacks citymap inserts of all towns but Managua. It is a very poor value.

    1 out of 5 stars Nicaragua map.......2004-04-01

Incomplete, contains many errors. The Nicaragua portion of the Central America map by ITMB more complete, more accurate. Examples of errors. Does not show road from Nandaime to Granada, a major road. Does not show airports/airstrips other than Managua and a few larger towns, the Central America Map does. Shows San Jorge inland rather than on Lake Nicaragua, where it is a port. Example of omission is Merida on Ometepe Island, shown on the Central America Map. Shows ciudad Jinotega as Jinoteca, and the Department Jinoteca as Jinotega. These errors/omissions found in only a fast cursory review of the map. Not sure it deserves even one star.
