Sue Monk Kidd's The Mermaid Chair is the soulful tale of Jessie Sullivan, a middle-aged woman whose stifled dreams and desires take shape during an extended stay on Egret Island, where she is caring for her troubled mother, Nelle. Like Kidd's stunning debut novel, The Secret Life of Bees, her highly anticipated follow up evokes the same magical sense of whimsy and poignancy.
While Kidd places an obvious importance on the role of mysticism and legend in this tale, including the mysterious mermaid's chair at the center of the island's history, the relationships between characters is what gives this novel its true weight. Once she returns to her childhood home, Jessie is forced to confront not only her relationship with her estranged mother, but her other emotional ties as well. After decades of marriage to Hugh, her practical yet conventional husband, Jessie starts to question whether she is craving an independence she never had the chance to experience. After she meets Brother Thomas, a handsome monk who has yet to take his final vows, Jessie is forced to decide whether passion can coexist with comfort, or if the two are mutually exclusive. As her soul begins to reawaken, Jessie must also confront the circumstances of her father's death, a tragedy that continues to haunt Jessie and Nelle over thirty years later.
By boldly tackling such major themes as love, betrayal, grief, and forgiveness, The Mermaid Chair forces readers to question whether moral issues can always be interpreted in black or white. It is this ability to so gracefully present multiple sides of a story that reinforces Kidd's reputation as a well-respected modern literary voice. --Gisele Toueg

An Adequate Follow-up to "Bees".......2007-09-30
Of course, this was not The Secret Life of Bees, but it was a decent book in its own right. Jesse returns to the island where she grew up to deal with a crisis involving her mother. When she arrives, her life is turned up-side-down. The tumult includes falling in love with a monk, her mother's sanity, the decision of whether to abandon her former life and her husband, and the realizations about her father's death. The conclusion was good, all the lose ends tied up, but I can't help but think that Jesse was unjustly vindicated. Her actions were often selfish and her justification for these actions were unfounded. But the story was full of folk-lore and embedded with self-realization, both on her part, her mother's and even Brother Thomas. This was a "coming of age" story, even though the characters were past their prime. An adequate follow up to her first novel, it has established Sue Monk Kidd's niche as a writer of honest southern women with pasts to resolve.
A great story writer!!! I love this........2007-09-26
Sue Monk Kidd is an excellent writer and especially for women. NOT that the opposite sex wouldn't enjoy it as well, I simply find this particular book a story that women will enjoy in every possible way. Kidd has a very spiritual nature and though it doesn't hit you over the head in this story, it can be felt. I was "hooked" from the beginning to the end. I am figuring YOU will too.
A Disappointment.......2007-09-06
I was disappointed by this book. While - as usual - I enjoyed Monk Kidd's writing this story didn't work for me. Specifically I found her relationship with Whit (Brother Thomas) unnecessary. Not only did it not help the narrative, IMO, it lessened the story and the characters.
I think the story would have been better if Monk Kidd had instead focused on the other aspects of the novel - Jessie's midlife discontent, her father's death, her mother's condition and her relationship with her mother, her relationships with her husband and daughter, the relationships of the other island women, more information on the Gullah culture, etc.
There is no comparison to "The Secret Life of Bees" which I found magical and more compelling. Also Sue Monk Kidd's non-fiction "Dance of the Dissident Daughter" was, IMO, fantastic - and had a resounding impact on me.
I would recommend other Sue Monk Kidd books before I would recommend "The Mermaind Chair".
Eh.......2007-09-05
I could care less about this book. It was boring and I only bought it because it was in the grocery store. Now I know why it was near the suppositories. Though the book wasn't horrific, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
vulgar.......2007-09-02
If vulgar language bothers you, don't read this book. I was listening to it on CD, and the first time the "F" word was used, toward the beginning of the story, the CD set was returned to the library, unfinshed. It disgusts me when authors ruin what could potentially be a good book with the use of unnecessary profanity.

Book Description
Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03
Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.
Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19
Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.
Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09
There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.
For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.
Very Interesting.......2007-03-07
It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.
History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10
Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.
I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.
Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.
Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.
I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.
This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description
LEADING FROM THE SECOND CHAIR will raise awareness of the need for strong leaders in secondary positions. It will describe the value they can bring to their organization and to primary leaders when they are serving at their full potential. It will reshape the way they view their role, with an emphasis on their own responsibility as leaders. It recognizes the unique challenges and frustrations of serving in a subordinate position and equips these leaders with the attitudes and skills that they will need to survive and thrive in this new paradigm.
Because of the scarcity of resources for second chair leaders, particularly those in the church, this book will offer a practical way to improve the performance of any organization.
Leading Congregational Change discussed the importance of a "vision community"--a diverse group of key members who discern and implement the vision for a congregation--to guide the transformation of a church. This work will extend the theme of an empowered leadership team as we explore how individual clergy and laity can lead effectively.
Customer Reviews:
For Second and First Chair Leaders.......2007-03-09
This book gave me a fresh perspective on a difficult situation. I can get away with calling myself a good leader. I am a graduate of the nation's oldest military college and a former naval officer. And I know that all leadership is challenging. But I was not ready for the difficult dance that a second chair has to manage. No one person - even a senior pastor - can be the expert on everything. And if you are a strong leader, with proven and developed expertise in your profession it can be difficult when you report to someone without the same insight. I am an associate pastor in a growing church and also the principal of the church's school. My senior pastor is a great guy, an amazing preacher, and a solid church leader who has little experience in education and management of multiple employees. It can be tough trying to support someone who doesn't get you and does not have the time to absorb all that you have learned in two decades of working. But that is my job and it is also my job to be the servant and make things work in this relationship. This book gave me a lot of what I needed to get there mentally. On another note, if you are the top person in any ministry involving multiple staff you may need to read this book as much as your subordinates do - especially if you have less than five years in a senior subordinate role. But don't trust me - the people who wrote and contributed to this book are the experts - and it shows.
Resource For the Entire Pastoral Staff to Read Together.......2006-08-31
IF . . .
Staff communication and Egos are healthy enough to take it.
This book elevates the role of second chair pastoral staff. As the lead pastor of a church I appreciate the public acknowledgment of the immense value of second chair leadership. Any senior pastor who feels a need to micromanage or minimize the role of others is guilty of leading the church to mediocrity, sort of like an engine only running on one cylinder. I always want my second chair leaders to be LEADERS in every sense of the word.
This book also cautions second chair leaders to check their personal egos at the door when they enter. Subordination is a great American weakness that does great damage to the church. Often second chair leaders excell in vision, energy, and drive, but too often are weak in areas of savy and experience. If the first chair leader feels threatened, things quickly go from bad to worse. This book builds savy.
This book is timely, important, and could potentially prevent many ministry wrecks. I suggest that every multiple staff church use it as a study guide for a series of staff meetings. I wish it had come along earlier in my ministry.
Excellent Book For All Leaders.......2006-07-18
"Leading From The Second Chair" is a book that generates healthy discussions and allows anyone in a leadership role in a church to gain a better perspective on what they do and what the First Chair Leader goes through.
I have led our pastoral staff through a discussion of the principles in this book, allowing time for feedback, comments, interaction and questions. It has been a healthy time of understanding how God has wired each of us and how we can better serve our leader, build God's church and stay healthy.
executive pastors take note.......2006-04-20
I'm someone who recently transitioned from first chair to second chair by choice due to a recognition of my strenghths and weaknesses. This book helped in that transition as I felt my way around this new role. It also helped confirm for me that I had made the right choice. I found especially helpful the section on the "deep/wide paradox" in seeing the need for balance between minutia and grand vision. Also helpful (and humbling for a former first chair) was the section on the "subordinate leader paradox". This book will be extremely helpful to the second chair leader who feels trapped in a bad situation with a bad first chair (not me) but is still full of great wisdom for the person in a great situation with a great first chair leader(like my church). I recomended this book to a church planter in Hawaii and he read it along with his potential second chair guy, which I thought was a great use of this book. Every second chair leader should read this, especially young guys like myself.
Needed this 20 years ago.......2006-03-24
After 37+ years as a second-chair leader, finally there is a book with practical information that fits the position. I've always felt called to the second chair, but have also chafed at not being able to exert greater leadership for my church. The authors have done a masterful job of providing principles along with real-life examples. I recommend this to any second-chair leader.

Book Description
Henry David Thoreau wrote, I had three chairs in my house; one for solitude, two for friendship, three for society. In Chairs: A History, furniture historian Florence de Dampierre presents a wonderfully readable and visually stunning exploration of chairs and their place in culture through the ages. Along with hundreds of gorgeous photographsmany taken specifically for this bookde Dampierre fills these pages with fascinating information and anecdotes, tracing the chair's emergence in ancient Egypt and examining various forms of seating from classical Greece, the Roman Empire, and the Renaissance era, to the classic designs of today.
From thrones to divans, straightbacked to overstuffed, Baroque to Bauhaus, this beautiful volume will delight anyone who's ever taken a seat and wondered where it came from.
Customer Reviews:
A Simply Fantastic Book!.......2007-05-12
No one who has seen my home would expect me to have anything to do with a furniture book. But some perceptive friend gave me this book and now I get it! Under Ms. de Dampierre's tutelage, I have grown to understand how pieces of furniture are a reflection of the times in which they were created. This study of chairs is no less fascinating than any great work of art history and the author does an incredible job of detailing changes in social and political currents which impact the design and use of each chair in her exhaustive chronology. As importantly, the pictures are beautiful; the book is worth buying for them alone.
the ultimate book on chairs.......2007-05-11
Florence de Dampierre has produced what will certainly be not only the definitive guide to the chair itself but also a witty and learned look at how modes of communication in differing cultures governed the kind of furniture people invented for themselves. The scope of the book is huge, ranging from the cradle of civilization in Mesopotamia and Africa to the chair as modern art. I recommend it highly, both for serious collectors as well as anyone who has ever thought twice about the provenance of the place they've just sat down in. The book is copiously and beautifully illustrated, so it makes a lovely gift.
Interesting read, elegantly illustrated.......2007-05-11
In this fascinating book, De Dampierre brings a fresh perspective to world history by describing it through one of the most ubiquitous items in our daily lives: chairs. In doing so, she has produced a highly enjoyable read for both the sophisticated antique collector and the general student of history.
A Great Read.......2007-05-10
A very well written book with lovely and truly beautiful illustrations. Highly recommended!
Chairs; A History.......2007-05-09
I have read Chairs; A History and find it to be fasinating from two view points. One is that it is more than a history of furniture, it is a social history of the people who sat in the chairs and their times and their culture. Secondly I will retain it for years as one of the most complete reference books on the cultural periods discussed. Finally it is beautifully illustrated and written and should be in everyone's library.

Customer Reviews:
one of our current favorites.......2007-10-03
This, along with Something Special for Me have been top picks for our 3 1/2 year old for the last few months. She asks for them over and over. I love how this book tells a simple story yet illustrates wonderful family values without being preachy. I imagine this will be in the regular rotation at our house for years to come.
Loved it.......2007-05-11
THis is a book that I and my students thoroughly enjoyed. I love teh emphasis on hardwork and perseverance. Most children can relate to the notion of saving money to purchase something they really want to have. Written from the perspective of the child makes the story easy for children to identify with. The notion of harwork and perseverance is weaved through out the story. From the mother's long hours at the diner to the family's year of saving change in a jar. The Coldecott-winning illustrations allow the reader to feel the emotions the little girl is feeling and correspond beautifully with the text. The cover of the book is an outsiders view of the diner where the little girl's mother works. Ths vantage point lends to the perspective from which the story is told. I feel this is a story that can transcend time. There will always be the need for hard work and perseverance. There will always be hard times one has to overcome. The notion of earning and valuing material pocessions can cross all cultures.
mom and grandma.......2007-03-13
A beautiful book, visually and story-wise. My children loved it, I loved it and now the grandchildren love it. It has drama and kindness and an appreciation for small things that make life rich.
Another missing Dad.......2007-01-16
Where's the father in this story? With all the unfortunate divorcing going on in this world, I plan to inundate my child with stories about happy families with both a mom and a dad. If it doesn't work out for him when he grows up and gets married, at least I can say I tried my best. I'm tired of forcing the feminist agenda on our kids. They need to know that not having a GOOD husband/father at home is not a good thing. Also, I thought the book was boring and the chair was ugly.
A great book for kids.......2006-09-29
I recently bought this book for my 7-year-old, and was really impressed by both the story and the beautiful illustrations. I felt it was a good story for my daughter to read as it told how the young girl, her mother and grandmother survived a fire that destroyed their home and built a life for themselves afterward. The reward to being able to buy a comfortable chair after all their hard work and savings drives home the point of how much we have and how little we may sometimes appreciate it.

Geneen Roth estimates that she's gained and lost more than 1,000 pounds during her life. That makes her uniquely qualified to write this, her sixth book, which delivers exactly what its subtitle indicates: 50 Ways to Feel Thin, Gorgeous, and Happy (When You Feel Anything But). It's sure to appeal to her considerable cult of readers who've bought her other feel-good, anti-diet books including the bestselling When Food Is Love: Exploring the Relationship Between Eating and Intimacy and Why Weight?: A Guide to Ending Compulsive Eating. It's for the estimated 25 million women in America alone who are on diets; for those who find that they're never happy because they delay gratification ("I'll be happy when I lose 10 pounds"), and those who punish themselves for eating one too many chocolate chip cookies.
Roth's advice is simple, but often beyond the realm of thinking of someone obsessed with calorie counting. She recommends that you eat at least one hot meal every day, as a slice of hot pizza will make you feel more full than a cold and cardboardy one will; that you should do one "exquisitely kind" thing for yourself every day, be it buying new underwear or taking a sledgehammer to your scale; and that you should "separate the desire to be thin from the desire to be cherished." She also gives straight diet advice that can't be found in publications along the lines of Cosmo: "Too much fat makes you fat. But too little makes you fat, too, because you usually make up for eating nonfat foods by eating twice as much. I suggest you allow yourself to eat enough fat to feel full. Part of the reason that many of us feel as if we could start eating at one end of our kitchens and chomp our way clear across the United States is that we never give ourselves permission to feel full without feeling guilty, to eat enough fat when it's not on a binge." Amen. --Erica Jorgensen
Book Description
Geneen Roths pioneering books were among the first to link overeating and compulsive dieting with deeply personal issues that go far beyond weight and body image. Now, in this fun, practical book, she helps readers radically shift their relationships with food and find more life-affirming ways to care for themselves. With an exhilarating combination of intelligence and wicked good humor, she offers bite-sized pieces of invaluable wisdom.
Customer Reviews:
Best (non)diet book I've ever read!.......2007-06-09
I originally checked this book out of the library. I loved it so much I bought a copy and am reading it again. I also purchased two copies to give to good friends. This book may or may not help me to loose weight, however, it is so uplifting and encouraging it has really helped to change my attitude towards food and not to be so self-loathing.
excellent book.......2007-01-10
as a person on the way from recovery from anorexia, this book offered helpful advice in a fun demeanor. would definitely recommend this book to everyone--on either sides of the spectrum.
when you eat at the refrigerator, pull up a chair.......2006-08-26
I like it that this book is divided into short chapters so that I can read it when I have small bits of time.
Life-changing........2005-10-16
I am only on page 14, but I already know that this book is going to change my life. Geneen has an against-the-grain look at dieting, weight loss and cultural expectations of women, and has already made me question the way I treat my appetites and my body. I am looking forward to reading the rest of this book.
What I had been looking for!.......2004-09-10
I've had this book a couple years now and I must say it's what I always go back to when diets disappoint me. It really tells it like it is and I'm planning to buy more books by Geneen as soon as I can. If anything this book at the very least puts things into perspective. A lot of it is "obvious" but then again are things we all tend to forget or not realize. I will keep this book on my bedside table forever!

Sleek, stuffed, buttoned, or bent, in the den or the dining room, the chair is an indicator of its owner's identity. Chairs make up much of the interior landscape of our homes and workplaces, and a comfortable chair is considered a great asset in either location. A rigorous survey of the last 150 years of chairs, 1000 Chairs is a pictorial guide to the axiom "you are where you sit." Writers Charlotte and Peter Fiell argue that, as well as being an icon of identity, the chair is a form through which designers engage in social, political, and even ergonomic rhetoric. A good example is George Nelson's mass-produced modular seating system. Geometrical in design, its austere, mostly rectilinear lines are efficient and economical. The book follows developments and mutations in chair design from the days before art deco through the rise of modernity and into the mid-'90s, when designers like Philippe Starck used such materials as recycled plastic and injection molded polypropylene.
In total there are more than the 1000 advertised illustrations, and each is accompanied by a small text describing the significance of the chair and its designer. The book includes more than 100 capsule biographies of such designers as Charles Rennie Mackintosh, Adolph Loos, and Marcel Breuer. The only problem with 1000 Chairs is, ironically, its own ergonomics. At about eight by six inches and nearly 800 pages, it is an unwieldy little tome. That aside, this is a great book--a must for anyone interested in sitting down. --Loren E. Baldwin

If you just want to see alot of chairs with basic information, this is the way to go. Real pretty.
excellent purchase if you like chairs and design.......2006-02-20
The order came in quickly, book was in tip-top condition. You can cnsider this a quality book if you like chairs and the history and the evolvement of design in chairs. The pictures are fun to look at and you can marvel at the creativity of the designers.
Glad I bought it.......2006-01-13
I make chairs (and other furniture) out of found wood. I bought this book out of profits from the sale of one chair, and within the first 50 pages, I had ideas for several more chairs I wouldn't have thought of on my own. I just look at the pictures; not particularly interested in the history or designer or derivation. If you want ideas for making chairs and you can figure out the construction details for yourself, this is a useful book.
Well-made book, BTW. Isn't going to fall apart if I leave it in the shop and can stand up to a fair amount of sawdust.
Aprobado... pero con lo justo.......2005-10-06
Interesante como guía general.
Buenas fotos, pero falto de contenido, y de pobre edición.
Needs to include more Dunbar and Edward Wormley.......2002-10-20
Very good overview.. wish they would have spent more time on mid-century modern leaders like Edward Wormley of Dunbar fame.
Those in the know -- seek out Wormley for a clear viewpoint on the essence of modern design.

It's not easy being NYPD detective Lincoln Rhyme, the world's foremost criminalist. First of all, he's a quadriplegic. Secondly, he's forever being second-guessed and mother-henned by his ex-model-turned-cop protégé, Amelia Sachs, and his personal aide, Thom. And thirdly, it seems that he can't motor his wheelchair around a corner without bumping into one crazed psycho-killer after another.
In The Empty Chair, Jeffery Deaver's third Rhyme outing--after 1997's The Bone Collector and 1998's The Coffin Dancer--Rhyme travels to North Carolina to undergo an experimental surgical procedure and is, a jot too coincidentally, met at the door by a local sheriff, the cousin of an NYPD colleague, bearing one murder, two kidnappings, and a timely plea for help. It seems that 16-year-old Garrett Hanlon, a bug-obsessed orphan known locally as the Insect Boy, has kidnapped and probably raped two women, and bludgeoned to death a would-be hero who tried to stop one of the abductions.
Rhyme sets up shop, Amelia leads the local constabulary (easily recognized by their out-of-joint noses) into the field, and, after some Holmesian brain work and a good deal of exciting cat-and-mousing, the duo leads the cops to their prey. And just as you're idly wondering why the case is coming to an end in the middle of the book, Amelia breaks the boy out of jail and goes on the lam. Equally convinced of the boy's guilt and the danger he poses to Amelia, Rhyme has no choice but to aid the police in apprehending the woman he loves--no easy task, as she's the one human being who truly knows the methods of Lincoln Rhyme.
Rhyme's specialty combines the minute scientific analysis of physical evidence gathered from crime scenes and his arcane knowledge of, it would seem, every organic and inorganic substance on earth. Deaver combines engaging narration, believable characters, and his trademark ability to repeatedly pull the rug out from under the reader's feet. Lincoln Rhyme's back all right, and the smart money's betting that his run has just begun. --Michael Hudson
Book Description
Renowned criminalist Lincoln Rhyme faces his ultimate opponent: a kidnapper and murderer dubbed the Insect Boy. But Rhyme is in for a surprise when he learns that catching a criminal is one thing...and keeping him is another. Now Rhyme, in North Carolina to undergo risky spinal cord surgery, finds himself hunting a ruthless killer in the heart of a southern swampland -- and going head-to-head with his protégé, Amelia Sachs, in a rivalry that tests the limits of both their expertise and their love.
Download Description
Jeffery Deaver's ingenious, wheelchair-bound criminalist from the international bestsellers The Bone Collector and The Coffin Dancer returns with a bang when an appointment at a renowned North Carolina hospital puts him in the exact wrong place at the exact wrong time. When the police turn to Lincoln for help finding two kidnapped hometown girls, he has no idea that the kidnapper will ultimately come between him and everything he holds dear -- especially his esteemed protegee and love, Amelia Sachs. When Rhyme and Sachs disagree about the perpetrator's identity, they find themselves pitted against one another in a winner-take-all battle of wits. A battle that will test the meaning -- and price -- of loyalty. The Empty Chair features the signature plot twists and heart-stopping suspense that have made Deaver a household name.
Customer Reviews:
Deaver never lets you down.......2007-06-01
I have more books written by Jeffrey Deaver than any other author, and that's because he is so consistent, he never seems to come up with a dud. The Empty Chair is one of his Rhyme/Sachs series, Rhyme being the C4 quadriplegic criminalist who pursues the baddies from the confines of his Storm Arrow powered wheelchair or his bed in his apartment off Central Park, and the only part of his body he can move (from the neck down) is his 'ring finger', and even then only very slightly. I saw the film The Bone Collector some years ago, and as a result I can't but imagine that Denzel Washington in the part of Lincoln Rhyme in any of these novels, even though I believe that Deaver's vision of the man is white caucasian. And somehow I believe Amelia Sachs is far more attractive than Angelina Jolie (who played the part in Bone Collector), but maybe I just love tall redheads who love fast driving....... Anyway The Empty Chair is another example of Deaver making a complicated story out of ostensibly a simple plot, a skill he is very adept at. While in North Carolina for experimental surgery that might improve (or worsen) his disability, Rhyme is drawn into a local police hunt for a 16-year-old known as The Insect Boy, and who is alleged to be responsible for murder, rape and abduction. One of his female victims is thought to be alive but she needs to be found quickly in the intense August heat of the humid Carolina swamplands. As usual, nothing is what it initially seems, and although I constantly tried to guess the next twist, more often than not I was wrong - and I'm becoming a seasoned Deaver reader. The Empty Chair is as much a puzzle as a piece of entertaining fiction, and I admit I wasn't always able to come up with the answers before they were revealed. Standard Deaver fare, then, but a high standard nevertheless and worth adding to your personal library.
an entertaining read; A-.......2007-05-28
This was my first Deaver novel - I "met" Sachs and Rhyme in this novel (which I just found out maybe wasn't ideal, according to another review). Luckily I saw the movie "The Bone Collector" long enough ago that I could put the actors out of my mind and start fresh. I actually hadn't even drawn the connection when I started the book, not knowing Deaver was the common author.
Good:
I still feel like I appreciated the characters, despite not having the benefit of their background from the previous novels. Some reviews have cast them as 1-dimensional & cliche's... not sure I can agree with that. I was drawn in and Deaver did a good job at making the book as standalone as possible, in spite of being part of a series. It was very readable and rather gripping. I wouldn't know forensic evidence if it hit me in the eyeball, so I don't know how accurate Deaver is, but he does make that aspect of the novel very compelling, interesting and believable. When all else fails, there's the list of clues taunting you, the reader, to figure it out for yourself. Very engaging - a strong and cohesive element for the novel.
Bad:
The plot twists, while fun, grew a little tiresome. I felt cheated by many of them. I know better than to think Deaver made them up as he went along, but it began to feel that way. No previous hints/foreshadowing/allusions to give the reader a shot at them - they just get pulled out of a hat, it seems. The whole plot seems to balance on the knife edge of plausibility, as well. I'm pretty good at suspending reality and just letting books take me for the ride, but the ice got pretty thin toward the end, even for me.
Overall, though, I do recommend the book. It was an entertaining read that I kept coming back to. My reading time is sporadic but I found myself making time to finish The Empty Chair. If this is one of Deaver's worst offerings (as many of these reviews say) then I might become a fan.
Exciting Thriller? Rename this book Empty Promises!.......2007-04-08
From its boring title to its cast of cliched southern rednecks, the Empty Chair disappoints from the very beginning. The storyline about a teen killer/kidnapper obsessed with insects is interesting, but the story quickly dissolves into a half-baked tale of southern intrigue that never offers any excitement. Deaver tried to save the book by pulling about a dozen rabbits out of a hat near the end of the novel, but many of these surprises and plot twists make no sense at all, and after the third or fourth one, the reader just gets tired of the whole thing. Deaver also tries to wrap up every plot conflict with a neat little bow at the end, but he leaves out most of the explanations which only leaves readers scratching their heads and wondering what happened. Try the earlier books in this series, both of which were far better reads.
Not very engrossing.......2007-03-02
For some reason, as I was reading this book my mind kept wandering. I'd suddenly realize that, while I had `read' the last two pages, they hadn't really registered. I don't know if it was just that I wasn't in the mood for that particular type of book (it was for a book club, so I couldn't put off reading it), if I've OD-ed on mysteries, of it there was just something about this book that I didn't quite like. Looking at it from a purely superficial viewpoint, there was nothing really wrong with the plot, the characters, or the writing, but it just did not draw me in. I didn't feel that tug of interest. It was just... okay. Until I got to the end, which annoyed me for its happy sitcom-wrap up `good people are really all okay no harm no foul thank you very much' ending. If it's possible to be ticked off about a happy ending, for some reason this book made me just that. I can't pinpoint why I didn't like it, the attraction just wasn't there.
Another great Rhyme book from Deaver........2007-02-04
No spoilers.
I'll start off by saying that with every Deaver book I read I become more and more of a fan. I randomly got into him by reading The Blue Nowhere (which is honestly one of the best books I have read in the past year) and when I finished that, I found that I liked it so much I wanted to keep reading more of his work, so I got into the Rhyme series. Having just finished this book, the third in the series after Bone Collector and Coffin Dancer, I can say that while it hasn't been the best so far (I reserve that title for Bone Collector) it was definitely a great read and I enjoyed every page of it.
This book is different from the first two books of the series in that instead of the action taking place in the middle of New York City or 30,000 feet up in an airplane, the entire book takes place either in the forests of a small North Carolina town, or the Sherriff's Departement of that said town. Even with the different venue, it is still a great book that not only keeps you glued to each word, but also delivers those plot shattering twists that Deaver can always be counted on for. Throughout the book, I had my qualms about some of the characters upon initially being introduced to them, but I'm telling you now, you won't know what's going to happen, I promise. And even if you have an inkling about it, that's only about 10% of what's really going on.
From reading the descriptions about the book and the jacket review, I was wondering what the plot of the book was going to be (especially the part about how Sachs turns on Rhyme and he has to track her down), but it most definitely works in the story and the way the ending wraps itself up is definitely satisfying. All in all, if you liked the first two books you're going to read this book anyway, regardless of reviews, but if you're questioning whether or not you want to pick up the Rhyme series, I say full-heartedly go for it.

Good visual guide.......2007-03-09
I have recently become certified as a Massage Therapist, but did not receive any training in chair massage. I wanted a good visual guide so that I could apply what I already know and be able to offer chair massage as a service. This book is a good guide for me.

One of the most challenging responsibilities of being a college department chair or dean is to effectively manage the diverse and independent intellectuals that form the typical college faculty. - An analysis of how self-understanding is essential to any leader
- Strategies for working with faculty and staff in a sincere and authentic manner

- Tips on achieving consensus among faculty
- Advice on conducting departmental or college meetings that create cohesion

- An explanation of how to eliminate negative defenses

Nothing new.......2006-08-25
Some generic advice from a series of papers and presentations. Nothing all that new or useful.
If you are a dean, department chairperson, or for that matter any leader, you need to purchase this book!.......2006-08-08
This book on Managing People is outstanding; I urge you to order a copy, put it somewhere nearby. That way you'll be able get your hands on it quickly. Just make off with a copy, if you must, though I warn you not to touch the Provost's copy, which is presuming that he or she has one, and I find that not too difficult to imagine! This is a book you're sure to use time and time again. It's that good.

A book that needs to be on your desk.......2006-06-09
This is a valuable book and whether you're a dean or a department chair--or for that matter, anyone who "manages" people--it needs to be somewhere you can get your hands on it immediately. Its contributors offer some useful, practical advice not found in enough books that are written primarily for educators.
