Product Description

An up-to-date manual for modern film development techniques. Companion volume to the bestselling The Darkroom Cookbook, this book concentrates on films, their characteristics and the developers and other chemicals each requires for maximum control of the resulting image. It specifically addresses the difficult subject of T-grain film development and includes rarely found information on film development and the nature of film developers. The authors also tackle many of the widely accepted myths of film development. They reject the trend toward scientific evaluation of films and developers in favor of the photographer s development of a personal aesthetic, without relying exclusively on densitometry or H&D curves. 192 pp., fully illus., 7 x 10 , Spiralbound.

4 out of 5 stars Chemistry.......2006-08-04

Things you never knew about the developing process are in this. I was quite impressed, and am enthusiastic about re-reading it.

5 out of 5 stars ny review of this excellent book.......2005-09-30

very useful, it goes deep in the film developing as expected. It's a good starting point to make the own recipe and to learn *how works this kind of developer*. And many many more useful storic and pratic informations. Simply I love it. Dedicated to everyone feels to be an hero in this digital war against the true, pure, black and white...

3 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing.......2003-07-21

I bought this book as the other books I have are now a bit dated. As the understanding of film development is always evolving, I thought this book would give me the latest ideas and knowledge.
It does to some extent, but I could not help feeling the authors did not take the time to fully research and comprehend the details. Where they have quoted chemists / researchers the details are clear. However where they have tried to interpret or discuss aspects in some places it appears they do not clearly understand what they are trying to explain. The result is that they contradict themselves, fail to make things clear, or just plain get things wrong. They also only seem to address research by Kodak and a few independent researchers. The book thus misses out on research done by Fuji, Agfa, Ilford, etc. which is a significant omission in my opinion.

So is the book worth it ? I think that I would still buy it as there are very few sources of up to date information available. And to be fair, they seem to have taken care in reproducing the formula. However, I would be sure to read some of the older books on developers, and cross check the information before relying on it.

5 out of 5 stars Another great advanced user book from Anchell........2003-02-12

I bought and read every page of all three of Steve Anchell's black and white photo information books: The Variable Contrast Printing Manual, The Film Developing Cookbook, and The Darkroom Cookbook. Why? Because he gives a mix of an historical view plus tells what to pick of the best current chemistries. He does this without bogging down in the actual complexities of a college chemistry course keeping it at a usable technicians level. Since he also tells you why you are using various chemicals or paper his books do not dumb down but instead give you fascinating useful information. Anyone serious about darkroom work will appreciate his insights and commentary about chemistry use. He lists so many historical and current B&W chemical formulas and their use that any B&W experimenter will find the books useful. Beginners may get information overload but anyone who has already done B&W developing will appreciate the vast amount of information. These books could use an overall rewrite to make them a bit simpler to understand, in spite of this they are one of the few sources to accumulate this B&W information and are well worth owning as a reference and explanation.

3 out of 5 stars Great for history and formulas, NOT for beginners..........2002-02-15

I bought this book under the assumption and recommendation that it would teach me how to begin developing my own film... Unfortunately, this is NOT the book for that! This book has great historical value in describing the different formulas, their strengths and weaknesses, and contains charts that are probably valuable to those who ALREADY process their own film. This book is NOT for beginners looking into how one goes about processing their own film!

5 out of 5 stars The best and the... worst?.......2007-03-12

Best material in Black and White photography. The text is perfect. The pictures and the print quality have a lot to desire. This is a book you will not buy for its looks. But, the content is fantastic. For all your answers to necessary techniques in B&W you will not find a better more concise text. After reading the book cover to cover I have to say that the worst (print/looks) is insignificant when compared to the material and information covered. I wish the book is reprinted in higher quality. Five stars for a book that delivers what its title claims.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent intro to BW Photography.......2006-11-24

I have used this text in my introduction to black and white photography course for just over a year. Student response has been universally positive. We have all found it thorough, well written and easily understood by into students. My only "wish" is that the author had included a section on negative faults such as found in Horenstein's: Black and White Photograpy: A Basic Manual.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent Black and White photography manual!.......2005-11-22

This book, as reviewed by others, is not for first time photographers but is a first class help to those who wish to advance into something a little more technical, but essentially
"on the ball" photography. I found the book to be thoroughly comprehensive, sometimes over technical and needing real concentration to understand these basic principles, but well worth the cost of the book. It is a first class addition to any black and white photographer's library. I wish this sort of volume was available when I first started black and white photography 50 years ago!

5 out of 5 stars fabulous!.......2005-10-08

The book was in amazing condition and the price was very reasonable. It also arrived right on time! VERY VERY helpful book.

3 out of 5 stars Not a beginner's book.......2004-09-15

There is a wealth of information here from the photographer's years of experience but it is organized in an atypical fashion, that is not a logical sort of progression. I can amplify the other reveiewer's comments concerning lack of visual examples. However, if you have a working knowledge of black and white photography and have done some elementary darkroom work you will find this book a "next step" toward fine tuning your skills. The author has some down to earth advice toward equipment and techniques and is not a "purist" toward any style.

Book Description

Fine art quality, black-and-white prints are within every photographer's reach with the techniques illustrated in this digital image editing guide. Taking advantage of the control and reproducibility that the digital darkroom offers, this handbook teaches photographers how to fine-tune images with contrast and exposure levels, crop and rotate images for dynamic results, and remove flaws such as dust and scratches long after the photograph has been taken. Instruction on techniques that simulate traditional hand coloring and tinting and add special effects such as frames, infrared, and lighting and lens effects helps photographers realize their artistic vision. Screen shots and images guide readers through the presented techniques, allowing photographers to gauge their own results and anticipate the effects of the outlined corrections and enhancements on their own images. A gallery of the author's work provides inspiration for simulating—and improving upon—the chemical-based darkroom experience.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Not for my top shelf.......2007-02-10

There is no doubt that the author, Maurice Hamilton, made a great effort to produce a technical book about the finer points of using Photoshop to produce black and white images. It is technical and 'dry', and a hard slog. He explains (at length) some of the detailed procedures, tips and methodology which go to making fine prints. But, the book made me think of some of the Hollywood epics where the idea is grand but the director and the editor let the cast down. I don't care for the high price-low quality production of the book, either. Not that worthy and informational books must be slick and glossy; but for me they must be attractive and 'feel' good. I will keep this book in my reference library, but I do not count it in my '20 best photography books' list!

5 out of 5 stars Preserving the art of monochrome.......2006-08-14

Film photographers have long savored black-and-white photography for its stark alternative to realism, and the stripped down, minimalistic approach to creating an image. Digital photography threatened to push black-and-white photography to extinction, but, thankfully, artists like Hamilton have preserved the spirit of the medium and extended it through the use of Adobe's flagship image editor.

The author shows you the proper way to create monochrome images while preserving -- or enhancing tonality. He explains that a good black-and-white image isn't simply a color image that's been desaturated. I also liked the exploration into reproducing traditional darkroom techniques in Photoshop. This is a must-have book for any serious black-and-white worker.

5 out of 5 stars my photographs have improved with the help of this book.......2006-05-20

I consider this book to be in a class with the best books written on photography.
I especially appreciate the Ansel Adams quote and the way that Maurice Hamilton lets his own gallery speak for itself. The emphasis is not on showing off his own work but rather, on helping the reader advance their own art. My work has improved significantly since my first reading and I will read sections over several times.

Bravo Maurice and thank you, Linnea Nereim

5 out of 5 stars Nice Fine Art Book.......2006-04-22

This is a very nice fine art photography book dealing with black and white. The author is obviously very well versed in Adobe Photoshop and his expertise is evident through his writing. The inforamtion is well presented and clearly stated. The images are well done and have a broad appeal to both a professional and amateur.

Well worth the money

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resource.......2006-03-22

Intrigued by the glowing review of this book by Garth Leach at The Daily Shooter.com, I acquired a copy and experimented with several of the black and white conversion techniques described.

Like Garth, I found this book guided me toward the creation of outstanding black and white images. This book seems geared toward the intermediate Photoshop user but should also be helpful to novice users.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Yet.......2005-09-01

I have several books on B&w photography and George Todd's The Making of Twenty Images is the best I've read so far. I particulary like the fact that he includes his negatives as he reveals what went into each photograph, from composition to film development, printing and mounting.

5 out of 5 stars Something for Everyone.......2003-02-07

I got this book at the same time as I got Barry Thornton's Edge of Darkness. I found they were complementary is many ways. George Todd has been at this craft of making monochrome pictures for several decades, and his skill and picture and printmaking ability shine through. Mr Todd has got the picturemaker's trinity of 'tone, detail and texture' pretty much down pat, and the book gives us fine example after fine example of that. Wheras Mr Thornton in Edge of Darkness tells us as much about his heart and his head as about his superb pictures, George Todd has provided an extremely detailed account of each picture from before the shutter was tripped to when the print was ready to mount. There is something for everyone here - technicians, printmakers, photographers, and the house guest who simply browses a well produced book of outstanding images over a cup of coffee. They won't need to read one word - the pictures will speak to them. I like the book most of all because it showcases the ability of medium format so well. If the negative sizes were not detailed, I'm sure most would think these prints were from large format negatives. I'm glad I have it in my library.

    4 out of 5 stars Technical -- Advanced.......2000-03-06

Covers virtually anything do do with black and white processing. Provides all the 'How To" so lacking in other books. Does not omit non-Ilford developers, but includes charts for them as well. But the book is certainly for the serious ameteur or pro, and is very technical. I really need the data provided on a daily basis, so the techical aspects don't bother me -- they're a plus! But others may find the book too much and wish simpler explanations. I'm biased here.

5 out of 5 stars Great overview of black and white enlargning and developing.......1999-09-02

This book is a manual of b/w photography in the whole. The book is filled with useful information on how to develop your films and create good enlargements and also has a good storing and caring instructions for your precious films and photographs. Useful procedures like knifing and toning is also covered. The book contains information on various tools, like "the difference between diffuser and condenser enlargers" and many more. Great book for every b/w enthusiast.

3 out of 5 stars SO ****ING BORING.......2006-09-17

This book, is so hard to read, i don't know how any one could possibly turn a book that i, a darkroom hobbist my self could have wirtten in perhaps two hundered pages into a 464 page snooz fest. he includes all this unessiccary stuff aout how the film works and summerizeds stuff hes going to explain before he explains it... WHO CARES!!?? if i wanted to know how film works id buy a book on film! If you want to set up a drak room, eihter take a class, or buy a diffent book, thats not so hard to read, its basicly a text book. is it a bad book? nay, but don't expect to use it as a instruction manual, it has about fifty pages of nonsense between the actaul process of making a god damn darkroom!

5 out of 5 stars Superb Darkroom Manual.......2005-12-17

This book by Tom Grimm is by far the most comprehensive and practical handbook on darkroom information and procedures that I have yet read. I have been involved in photography since the early 1950's and this is one of the best books on this aspect of photography that I own. I believe it surpasses that excellent book "Enlarging" by Jacobson and Mannheim that I also own and still use (1975 edition). I just do not understand the previous criticism made that the book requires "a degree" to understand it! The only criticism I would make is that products listed by the author are not always available to UK photographers, as it has, naturally, an American bias, however, even with that small defecit, the book is well worth the price!

5 out of 5 stars Best Photography book!.......2004-09-10

This is one of the best photography books around, in my opinion. Very very detailed coverage of most all aspects of B&W and color photography. The author does not assum that you have your very own private dark room and makes sigguestions as to how you can use things you probably allready have around your house instead of expensive photography equipement. For instance, the author sigguests that you might use a fish tank and heater to control the temperature of color chemicals! And I tell you what, that is a lot less expensive compared to buying a rotary processor from Jobo.

The author gives detailed explinations of how processos work, and some hostory behind them. He also lets you just jump ahead to the quick and simple overview. This lets you learn about what your doing, if you new to the area, or get a quick review if you're not sure your quite remember how to do something.

Truly a great book, or even textbook for college classes.

    1 out of 5 stars Terrible book!.......2001-07-26

I am writing this review in order to warn new-comers to the field of photography against buying it. Although the title specifies, "for beginners through experts," this book almost requires a degree to comprehend it. Techniques discussed are not for beginners! The book insists you need to spend vast amounts of money and time to develop prints; this is untrue. In fact, a beginner would need to read 6 chapters of the book, which are extremely confusing, before being able to develop a black-and-white print. The process could quite easily be explained in less than a page.

In short, I do not recommend anyone buy this terrible book.

5 out of 5 stars This "Basic" Darkroom Book has it ALL........1999-08-14

As it says on the book's cover, for beginners through experts. Basic indeed! The author covers virtually every subject in photofinishing from basic black & white printing through color processing & printing with various films, papers and chemistry to delving into the digital darkroom! The author explains each subject in entertaining and conversational style to build the foundation for a more detailed and thorough explanation of the science & art of custom darkroom procedures and techniques. Photographs, illustrations and tables compliment the text. Loaded with information making it a valuable reference book even for those of us who have been doing custom black & white and color darkroom work for 20 years! If you have only one book on this subject, this is the book to own. The Basic Darkroom Book third edition is a must have.

I purchased this book before I first started using my darkroom. Since then, all the questions I've had, have been answered by this book. This book will tell you everything you need to know about darkrooms and developing film. 5 out of 5 stars This Book has a Soul.......2007-02-10

A few books come my way which have a story, some technical relevance, and a soul. I read somewhere else (sorry, can't recall) that sometimes we don't find good books, they find us. This is a good book that found me. I like it. The style, the contents, the production, the concept - the 'soul'. If you are moving to that 'analog to digital' phase in your photographic life, buy this book. And see what develops.

3 out of 5 stars Should show 4 stars, This book will challenge your thinking.......2006-02-13

First off let me say that there should be 4 Stars up there and not 3, but it won't let me change it. This book is not a manual of how to do B/W photography in photoshop. Instead its about the options, and new roads that being able to do such things, creates. This should be required reading before anyone enters that tired old, digital vs. film debate. This book shows how digital is really just another tool to the photographer and how it can liberate the photographer and expand their horizons. It challenges you to think rather than opinionate and at the same time offers many good photos that might help inspire your own work.

1 out of 5 stars Very little "hands on" digital B&W photography.......2005-09-01

This book has very little actual information about producing digital black & white images. Mostly it's a discussion of the author's transition from film to digital, and the benefits/differences of digital. There isn't much actual information on Photoshop techniques and other means of producing digital B&W photos, and what there is is very basic and can be found in countless other books/magazine articles/web sites. As well, the photos are not very inspiring, and certainly do not illustrate anything specific to digital photography. A much better choice for an introduction to digital B&W photography is Barry Thornton's "Elements of Transition."

2 out of 5 stars The best of intentions but too rambling and not very clear.......2005-07-21

Despite my high hopes for this book and the fact that Mr. Epharums is a talented photographer and print maker, and I trust had the best of intentions, this book is just not very good. The approach the author takes is inconsistent and confusing: at times he's rambling when you want simplicity and clarity; at other times he's sparse when you're hoping for detail.

For starters, the sections covering how to work with Photoshop are not very clear. And the figures and much of the text are so painfully small that they're almost useless. This is especially obvious when he covers duotones. I like what he's achieved, but he doesn't give much to learn from.

In another part of the book he offers his "guiding principles," a series of one-liners that I assume are supposed to convey a Zen-like teaching about his approach. Instead they left me baffled. Consider the phrase "A precision of feeling." It sounds nice, but what does it mean, (speaking of precision)? Or the phrase "Let the accident participate" which is accompanied by photos of boats beached at low tide. Again I was baffled: does he mean an accident in something he did in taking the photo or in working on it in Photoshop, or did he mean the "accident" of the beached boats (which were beached on purpose)? Again, a nice Zen-like sentiment (and believe me, I can get down and cosmic with the best of them), but not useful in learning about photography or about digital black and white image-making.

This touches on the essence of what's wrong with this book. It is trying to be both a guide to digital black and white printmaking and at the same time, a book about Mr. Epharums' approach and philosophy to image-making. Not that this can't be pulled off, only that he doesn't do it in this book.

I think that this book could have worked, if the author had partnered with a good Photoshop teacher, and if he had worked with a compassionate but ruthless editor, to keep the book on track and the ramblings at bay, and if he was committed to clear examples of how to make these types of images. But that's a lot of if-ing on my part.

What redeems this book somewhat are the images: they are wonderful, and do give one inspiration as to what is possible with digital image-making; just don't look to this book to show you how.

    Regards, David

3 out of 5 stars Interesting, but more philosophy than practice.......2005-07-01

I agree with the earlier reviewers. This is a very personal account of one man's transition from the traditional darkroom to digital. It concentrates on the effect of that change on the process of making black and white photographs. It is not a "how-to" manual, and, after some initial exploration of this transition myself, I don't agree with some of the author's statements about Photoshop and what he did and didn't find useful. A really good "how-to" is Amphoto's Guide to Digital Black and White Printing by Schaub.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointment, not what I expect........2001-12-08

Okay, here I am buying Carson Graves book on printing because earlier I bought his book on Zone system. Using previous book as prerequisite for this one, was way wrong. If you ever decide to buy some literature based on previous successes, think again. The one thing that I dislike very much about this book is a fact that author teach you to use numerous testing techniques without actually showing you enough picture examples of how given toning or bleaching changed the image. Of course, there are several photographs for illustration-but it's way too little for photography book. Photography book must have more than less pictures in order to show what author mean when he uses one or another alternation. It's like learning astronomy with books without ever looking at night sky. If author would use more illustrations I would give him more stars.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for beginners and advanced printers.Very practical.......1998-02-05

Although this is a basic book, it covers several topics that advanced darkroom printers will find useful. For example it discusses making test strips by exposing for the HIGHLIGHTS. I've used the method and have adopted it. I'm also experimenting with split-filter exposures which it discusses very completely and it has been very helpful. Worth the money -- I've learned several new techniques.
