Say no to silicone: The greatest natural breasts of our times

Some call it the American obsession, but men everywhere recognize the hypnotic allure of a large and shapely breast. In The Big Book of Breasts, Dian Hanson explores the origins of mammary madness through three decades of natural big-breasted nudes. Starting with the World War II Bosom-Mania that spawned Russ Meyer, Howard Hughes's The Outlaw and Frederick's of Hollywood, Dian guides you over, around, and in between the dangerous curves of infamous models including Michelle Angelo, Candy Barr, Virginia Bell, Joan Brinkman, Lorraine Burnett, Lisa De Leeuw, Uschi Digard, Candye Kane, Jennie Lee, Sylvia McFarland, Margaret Middleton, Paula Page, June Palmer, Roberta Pedon, Rosina Revelle, Candy Samples, Tempest Storm, Linda West, June Wilkinson, Julie Wills, and dozens more, including Guinness World Record holder Norma Stitz, possessor of the World's Largest Natural Breasts.

5 out of 5 stars Big Book of Breasts.......2007-09-07

Quite an interesting book from both a social and historical perspective. The text deals mainly with how and why many of these women became models and the roles they played in creating an image. Many of these models come from the glossy mens magazines of the 1970's and 80's, as well as date back to the 50's and 60's when nude photography was taboo.
The photos are tasteful and the text is interesting and speaks of the models how they conducted themselves, and why they posed.

1 out of 5 stars Worth It.......2007-08-10

Great publication, although it's a bit large for the average coffee table. The photos are high quality and the commentary is interesting and well written. I only wish there was a greater variety of models and more everyday women featured. Certainly a conversation starter!

5 out of 5 stars Better Than I Imagined - Great On Several Levels.......2007-07-16

From the "perv" in me, the focus on breasts, frankly, is right up my alley. :)

The execution of this book, however, is clearly on the art book level. It is a beautiful, large coffee table style book. The large b/w and color photos are extraordinary and beautifully printed. The text gives both context for these photos and offers extensive interviews with various models and people involved in the business. Furthermore, the plastic cover of the book is actually a virtual bra for the woman's torso underneath it. If you look at the cover art on this page, the black bra can be "removed" by removing the plastic dust jacket. Extremely clever. This book would be worth it at its retail price of $50, but at the approximately $33, it's a bargain. Even my wife, who is not particularly interested in women's bodies, found this book fascinating.

5 out of 5 stars Great coffee table book.......2007-07-05

This book had wonderfully entertaining interviews and high quality photographs. I recommend it for the aficionado in your life.

5 out of 5 stars great for the coffe table.......2007-07-05

everyone that has seen this book out has wanted to look at it. its very appealing to the eye and is a great coffe table book for singles.

Best of BUTT: Bringing back the "sex" in homosexuality

Since its first legendary issue in 2001, international quarterly magazine BUTT has been bringing together groups of young alternative gay guys all around the world, connecting fashion, sex, and art with a good sense of irony.

Put together by the magazine's founding editors Jop van Bennekom and Gert Jonkers in collaboration with photographer Wolfgang Tillmans, this book is a 'best of' compilation of the first 17 issues of BUTT, full of interviews with famous personalities and photographs by the likes of Terry Richardson, Inez van Lamsweerde, and Wolfgang Tillmans as well as unknown talent. Collectors of the magazine who have been desperately searching for rare back issues will be able to round out their collections with this compendium, which will also be a delight for those who haven't yet discovered the joy of BUTT.

With sexy pictures of, and candid interviews with: Asianpunkboy, Bruce Benderson, Peter Berlin, AA Bronson, Christopher Ciccone, Al Eingang, Simon Foxton, Marc Jacobs, Heinz Peter Knes, Marcelo Krasilcic, Inez van Lamsweerde, Bruce LaBruce, Lutz, Matmos, Ryan McGinley, Alasdair McLellan, Stephin Merritt, Walter Pfeiffer, Terry Richardson, Jeremy Scott, Hedi Slimane, Casey Spooner, Michael Stipe, Wolfgang Tillmans, Viktor & Rolf, Domenic Vine, Matthias Vriens, Rufus Wainwright, John Waters, Bernhard Willhelm, Jonny Wooster, Gus van Sant, Edmund White.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Not For The Small-Minded.......2007-07-13

This book is a collection of frank interviews and pictoral articles that will keep you turning pages until you've finished each and every one of the too-few-at-550+ pages. The more you read, the more you want. Each story is a voyeuristic acid trip into some aspect of the gay world that you probably hadn't even imagined existed.
Have you ever seen someone interesting walking down the street, and wondered what their story was? Well, what if someone went and asked them simple but insightful questions and then actually got answers? You would have this book. Some of the people being interviewed are somebodies...some are anybodies, and some are nobodies...but they are all equally interesting when asked the right questions.
Trust me, if you have a curious mind, you will love this book. If you already have all the answers, you probably just want to keep right on walkin'.

5 out of 5 stars Love it but just buy it somewhere else..........2007-05-17

I first ordered this book from amazon but they kept on delaying the shipment until I saw the book at a local Tower Records store so, I cancelled the order and bought it brand new. It cost a little more but sometimes you just have to have what you want asap.

Now, about the book. Unlike some review I read here stating that this book portraits young, famous and rich men. Not at all, the interviews are great, intelligent and witty and the characters portrayed range from music stars to ordinary guys (not ordinary like in "common", but simply "not famous"). The format is pretty simple, a Q&A session but it's perfect for revealing every character's personality, interests and humor.

Most of the pictures are cool, others are weird.

I recommend this book if you want to have a broad picture of the gay subculture out there or if you want to get to know better what's going on in the gay cultural world.

1 out of 5 stars It's just porn ..........2007-02-22

I flipped through this trash at American Apparel. It's just a new, sort of elitist way of repackaging porn. It's just as destructive as regular porn. More execs trying to sell us on what is attractive and what is not; i.e., young, muscled, endowed, rich = attractive and worthy of the gay "community's" attention, anything else = not.

You all can give this review "unhelpful" votes, all you want. Truth be told, gays wouldn't care about this magazine if it did not feature handsome, young white men. Look at all the attention given to CNN's Thomas Roberts.

5 out of 5 stars Great Read.......2007-01-30

This book is wonderful for entertainment while on the toilet! You can even use the pages if you run out of toilet paper! The pictures are quite lovely and the European aesthetic is so much better than anything manufactured in the US. I loved it.

5 out of 5 stars BUTT-tastic!.......2007-01-10

I love the magazine and I'm absolutely in love with this book! I accidentally ran across Butt a couple of years ago while doing some research on one of my favorite creatures alive: Wolfgang Tillmans (who has quite a contribution to the magazine as well as this book, specifically). The magazine is funny, candid, refreshing, gorgeously-sleazy in a honest/tounge-(and whatever else)-in-cheek sort of way, and highly intelligent to boot. This book is all of that bounded into one Butt. It is one giant amazing Buttfest.

Book Description

Beloved Bunnies In celebration of Playboy magazine's 50th anniversary, TASCHEN brings you this ultimate Playboy Playmate tribute featuring each and every Playmate of the Month since issue number one. Beginning with Marilyn Monroe herself and including such favorites as Pamela Anderson, Anna Nicole Smith, and Jenny McCarthy, this chronological look at the history of Playboy centerfolds includes photos of the Playmates as well as updated personal information about their lives to this day - just enough to spark your memory or pique your interest and surely leaving you yearning for more...

Hugh Marston Hefner was born in Chicago on April 9, 1926. The first issue of Playboy magazine, featuring the now-famous calendar photo of Marilyn Monroe, was produced in 1953 on a card table in his South Side apartment. Playboy grew at a phenomenal rate and by the end of the decade, the magazine was selling more than a million copies a month. At the start of the Sixties, Hef began to live out the "Good Life" depicted in the pages of his publication. He hosted a popular syndicated television show called Playboy's Penthouse, purchased the Playboy Mansion, and opened the first Playboy Club on the Near North Side of Chicago. Throughout the Sixties, Hef and Playboy became what Chicago columnist Bob Greene has called "a force of nature." Hef wrote an extended series of editorials titled "The Playboy Philosophy," championing the rights of the individual and challenging the country's heritage of puritan repression. By 1971, when Playboy Enterprises went public, the magazine was selling 7 million copies a month and there were 23 Playboy Clubs, resorts, hotels and casinos with more than 900,000 members worldwide. Hef established a second residence in Los Angeles, which quickly became known as Playboy Mansion West, and in 1975 decided to settle there permanently. In 1980, Hef championed the reconstruction of the Hollywood sign (then in serious disrepair) and was honored with a star on the Hollywood walk of fame for his efforts.

Since the mid-Eighties, daughter Christie Hefner has served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Playboy Enterprises, but Hef continues to serve as the magazine's editor-in-chief.

4 out of 5 stars Great for the collector.......2007-01-10

This book is the definitive collection of all the Playmates since the very begining. For the collector, or even the fan, of all things Playboy this serves as a great guide to all the beautiful women who have graced the pages of the magazine. Not only are the photos stunning, but the short-but-sweet stories of where they are now and what they've been doing since appearing make for enjoyable reading. I've had the pleasure of meeting many of the ladies and getting this book autographed is like getting your yearbook signed...by all beautiful women.

One caveat though: if you've got the previous edition (the 40th) you'll find the only change is the addition of the last ten years of Playmates.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good Book.......2006-11-06

very well shot pictures&tastefully done. Playboy has always had Beautiful Women pose as Centerfolds&this Book does a very Good Job of capturing the best shots. I've always been a fan of Playboy.

5 out of 5 stars All the Playmates in one book..........2006-10-15

This book starts out with pictures of Marilyn Monroe. Every playmate of the month from the fifties to Miss December 2004, have a small paragraph about where they are now or how they got into Playboy. The pictures are beautiful and tasteful.

4 out of 5 stars Once a Playmate, Always a Playmate.......2004-09-29

THE PLAYMATE BOOK is a tastefully presented heavyweight coffee-table edition book which showcases every woman who appeared in PLAYBOY between 1954 (Marilyn Monroe) and 1996 (Victoria Silvstedt). The photographic quality is superb. The history of the magazine is well-documented. The book does skimp on many of the capsule biographies of the 512 beautiful women who grace these pages. The Playmates of the Year, perennial favorites such as Bettie Page and Pamela Anderson, famous Playmates such as Stella Stevens, and Playmates who met infamous ends (Jayne Mansfield, Claudia Jennings and Dorothy Stratten come to mind), are given far more coverage than the average, perhaps fairly so.

THE PLAYMATE BOOK brings humanity to these otherwise often anonymous pin-up girls, many of whom suffered social ostracism (particularly in the early days of the magazine) for daring to bare all, and shows the Playboy Playmates to be an eclectic and interesting group of women with widely divergent lifestyles. Some of their stories are wonderful, some are tragic, some involve jets, yachts and 'beautiful people' while others involve kids and picket fences. There is no one 'definitive' Playmate.

The book's greatest failing is its inability to bring it all together. More than just a "family album" THE PLAYMATE BOOK should be a social history of women over four decades, but sadly does not editorialize even briefly on "what it all means." It's a bad oversight on the part of the editors, and takes away from the finished product.

It's fun to see the evolution of the Centerfold over time, the changing styles, the increasing daring. It's also fun to find your favorite Playmate(s) and discover what she is/was doing (circa 1997). Hopefully, PLAYBOY will update this book periodically, and add new Playmates as they appear.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Collection of Five Decades of Beautiful Women.......2001-11-25

Finding your dad's stash of "Playboy" magazines is one of the rites of adolescence. Here you find 'em all! Actually, it's just one photograph of each woman who was a Playmate between the first issue and the year this book was published. This is a good collection of photographs of beautiful women. Looking at these pictures, you see why "Playboy" really is a magazine that's done in good taste. The women are presented as examples of beauty, and the brief history that accompanies each woman tells you what they've been up to since. Most of these women explain how "Playboy" changed their lives for the better. And you'll also discover how many famous women have appeared as Playmates, including Janice Pennington, Jenny McCarthy, and Pam Anderson. Keep in mind, though, that the "Playboy" lifestyle isn't for everyone, and this may not be the perfect gift for everyone.

5 out of 5 stars Male Erotica!.......2007-06-05

This is an outstanding collection of erotica. Illustrations and drawings are really high quality and very erotic. Trust me, folks, these are not "cartoons" - but very stimulating and suggestive drawings of stylized "men" (no, these guys don't really exist....). Most people think that "explicit" equals "erotic". Wrong. Erotic is evoked through the imagination, and these artists have LOTS of imagination!

Book Description

This follow-up volume to the black-and-white Mammoth Book of Erotic Photography celebrates the female form through these studies by top photographers around the world, as well as some impressive new talents. It features the work of 78 photographers (many of whom specialize in nudes), with approximately 8 images each, as well as a short biography and picture of each contributor.
Included is a larger than ever number of female photographers, many of whom intriguingly practice the art of self portraiture-a chance to see how gender can sometimes influence the subtle way of looking at the body.
There's also a father and daughter team; a photographer who also appears as a model in two other portfolios; the grandson of the famed American photographer Edward Weston; a mix of professional and amateur photographers; and contributions from the UK, USA, Spain, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Austria, Russia, Argentina, France, Israel, Italy, Poland, Norway, Switzerland, Japan, Australia, Canada, Czechoslovakia, and Holland

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Like a jumbo shrimp.......2007-01-22

This Mammoth book is actually a little paperback. It's filled with fine examples of fine art nude and erotic photography. It is unfortunate that the photographs could not be presented in a larger setting, so the photographers art could be fully appreciated.

5 out of 5 stars A superb collection of erotic nudes........2006-12-25

Jakubowski has put together a fine collection of the best nude photography of a number of different photographers from around the world. The only criticism I have of the book is the lack of any photos that have a beach and/or desert background.

1 out of 5 stars Can you say "Dull".......2006-09-21

Amazingly this is a book full of unclad women and yet the best word to describe the book IMHO is simply dull. Only a couple of the pictures even inspired the thought, 'I wish this person had developed the nebulous idea they originally had'.
Obviously none of the photographers went out of their way to find attractive models to work with and then didn't bother to use any imagination with the ones they picked up.
This book isn't worth the time to flip through if someone gave it to you.

4 out of 5 stars Today's nudes.......2006-02-06

Beautiful nudes, all of them, but rather subdued to anyone looking for serious erotica. The majority of these photos are figure studies, just a simple celebration of women's youthful beauty. Many of the women have pierced this'n'that and many have tattoos, from the demure on up. In some, the marks are just the ones left by the sun or by nature (p.378 - charming!). A few add simple props, like the cover's gauzy scarf. A few others add wit in the form of a piece of fruit (p.450) or a flower (p.380)

For many artists, the erotic comes not just from nudity, but from undress. That genre displays clothes and underclothes in various states of removal. Others see lingerie as decoration in itself, ranging up to stylized, impractical items worn for their play value alone. Along that axis, pictures range from innocent to intense kinds of pinups. The outer ranges of these pictures add moderate bondage, improbably high heels, or other mild fetish elements. A few suggest or show physicality between women or of a woman with herself. The very few pictures that cross over into hard core seem decidedly out of place amid generally tasteful and elegant images.

The models are all lovely, but are all just anonymous models. Other collections assign a name (or at least a pseudonym) to each, an acknowledgement of the person in front of the camera that this collection does not allow. And, as in so many collections, European features, 20-ish and thin, predominate by a large margin. The world has so many other colors, ages, and shapes of beauty that this collection, despite more then 450 pages, comes across as incomplete. Also, I have to wonder how this collection will look in twenty years - skin has always been there, but pierced and inked skin are today's look and that will pass in time. Despite these few flaws, the collection is lovely and enticing, a worthwhile part of any collection of figure photography.

Body Knots is a creative collection by Howard Schatz that showcases his extraordinary photographs of the human body. Continuing his expansive exploration of the relationship between content and technique in his earlier bestsellers, Pool Light and Water Dance, the exquisite and ethereal images are unlike any seen before by photographic aficionados. Models are arranged in organic positions and colorized in rich, vibrant tones, making Schatz s work a truly original effort. You have to see it for yourself!

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Big Budget, Oddly Cold.......2004-08-05

While technically skillful, the work of Howard Schatz on the whole, and especially in "Body Knots" often seems to betray a somewhat cruel "use-factor" in regards the human beings that are his subjects. Going back as far as his portraits of successful women in the San Francisco Bay area, one portrait symbolically blinded the sitter with reflections on the lenses of her glasses. For follow-up, Mr. Schatz attempted to drown the San Francisco Ballet Company, and now he presents us with human beings decapitated, covered in gimmick-ridden colors or worse, and appearing more like teeth than human. While great art often attacks the human figure to reveal frailty and psychological depth (De Kooning, Bacon...), Mr. Schatz's work, in this reviewer's opinion, while occassionaly producing a graphically stunning image, only touches on the human soul with his photographs of young children, whose unrepressable energy for life perhaps could not be covered over, with technique or artifice.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2000-08-07

I love Howard Schatz photography. He has created memorable imagry with his "Passion and Line" and "Water Dance" books. "Body Knots" is an evolution of "Pool Light" which was a sequel to "Water Dance". But not all evolution is happy or successful.

This book is far too gimmicky for my taste and I think Mr.Schatz is capable of far more creative imagry than this. How many of these images will appear in Madison Ave. advertising over the next year? Or is that the real goal here? One wonders. Perhaps if Mr.Schatz would have remained in California rather than moving to New York his artistic goals would not have been seduced by the scent of advertising contracts. I don't begrudge an artist trying to earn money but Mr.Schatz was a very successful surgeon before taking up lenswork full time--he isn't a starving artist.

What strikes me about "Body Knots" is that it is more a graphic arts presentation than it is fine art photography. Mr. Schatz, please go back and look at "Passion and Line" and "Water Dance". You created something wonderful there. Remember your motives?

5 out of 5 stars Stunning Visual Images.......2000-06-26

If you're standing in a bookstore with a copy of Howard Schatz' new Body Knots in your hand, turn to Knot No. 184 near the end of the book. This image, one of my favorites, is a sly, humorous, enchanting image. Now you're hooked, right? But still not sure if you want to purchase the book ? Then turn to Knot 114 near the middle. This glorious, ingenious, repetition of the human form, part microscopic investigation, part seductive image, provides another reason to believe that Schatz is one of the most interesting, original, creative photographers at work today. In a stunning series of books, covering such themes as homelessness and the endlessly seductive charms of the human body, Schatz has opened our eyes to new ways of looking at the possibilities of photography. Body Knots, one of his most creative works, is a book for anyone who wants to be an artist, who wants to understand spatial possibilities, and, especially, wants to laugh over the imaginative limits of form and vision. This is one of those books that will make you look at the world differently.

5 out of 5 stars Body Knots is a must have for photo & art fans.......2000-06-05

Today I was able to flip through a copy of the new photo book, "Body Knots" by Howard Schatz the photographer whose previous book, "Pool Light" is one of the most daring and beautiful photography books I have ever seen.

Most photographers would continue treading down the same artistic path, but not Howard Schatz aparently.

Body Knots is a collection of photos of humans entwined to make all sorts of puzzling shapes and images in the most beautiful color schemes and light.

There are collages of these strange, ambiguously naked images that create landscapes of the most surreal nature.

You don't even realize that you are staring at multicolored nudes entangled. The images seem more like alien shapes.

This is a coffee table book that people will flip through repeatedly and enjoy in a unique manner with each viewing.

Body Knots is a fun, and beautiful book that celebrates the human body with humor and new perceptions and challenges the viewer to rethink how they see things.

I know what I am giving as a gift for the rest of this year.

2 out of 5 stars Put Your Frown On.......2007-09-16

A HUGE disappointment. The meager size of this triple book collection is too small to do any justice to the photographs within. In addition, many of the pages feature multiple photographs so tightly produced together they are pracitically impossible to see. The quality of the reproduced photography is substandard and in many cases so dark they lose much of the detail. The actual pages themselves are also of poor quality and appear to be on recycled non-gloss paper. The text itself is so incredibly small it is vertually impossilbe to read without a magnifing glass and the print on some of the photographs is not readable at all. I was hoping for an explaination of the symbols used on many of the pictures. If it is there I could not find it. It is a true shame and disgrace that these magnificent vintage physique models and the creative photographers that produced these classic images are wasted in this publication. These treasured glimpes back at physique male modeling on the verge of change and at the dawning of a new beginning in its infancy should be restored and reproduced in their original radiant, breathtaking, dramatic splendor and not jammed crammed into inferior books which obviously took no pride in either the models appearance or the genius of each photographer. Any true collector of vintage pictorial physique models will be dissatisfied and regret this book purchase. I know I did.

For those people who either collect old physique pictoral, or appreciate good balck & white photography...this is a good find. It arrived quickly & in good condition. Thanks.

5 out of 5 stars a visual document of the stud.......2007-05-11

this taschen collection has a high place in my personal collection. one, i like old-time smut and this is it!

but, this collection is document of a certain aspect of gay culture that was born out of the era of oscar wilde and his feasting panthers, then lost its pretty words as society became more permissive and the viewers demanded older boys that would show more flesh.

eventually they would show themselves in various states of arousal and gay porn would be with us. of course, we don't think of these boys as potential victims like women in the sex industry but, outside of their boyish faces, obvious youth and abundant muscles, do we ever think of them? do we ever consider them? or, do we just enjoy them and then pass them around--once from hand to hand but now from email to email?

5 out of 5 stars I read the articles too!.......2003-03-22

"Physique Pictorial" spanned the entire era of the "physical culture" magazine boom. The magazine, and the era ended soon after the death of its' editor Bob Mizer in 1993. There is not much to say about the pictures that other reviewers haven't said already. (Although it is sad to see the models metamorphose from clean cut, boys-next-door to dull-eyed, druggie/hustler types as the 1970's wore on.)

What really amazed me was the hard-hitting commentary by Mizer in issue after issue. A genuine libertarian, the intense public opprobrium towards homosexuals (the word "gay" wasn't yet in wide use) fazed him not at all. He insisted on his rights as an American citizen and insisted his readers do the same. His eloquent arguments against censorship carried the day in several court cases where various bluenoses sought to ban distribution of his magazine. He frequently had to contend with anthropoids from the LAPD vice squad who did everything possible to make things difficult for him. I marvel at the guys' self-possession and courage. Mixed in with the commentary are mordant and amusing photo captions regarding some of the models. Mr. Mizer was nobody's fool.

For those who can afford it, this is a marvelous historical document as well as a fun read. More proof that the gay community of today didn't just pop out of nowhere in 1969.

5 out of 5 stars just to have it.......2001-09-27

Taschen does a wonderful job of making available work that's likely to appeal to only a small audience; they do it well. This is no exception. Even if you only go through it all once, anyone interested in the male body should own this reprint. It's an important artifact of our cultural history, a milestone in the evolution of the man as an object of desire. And the pictures are hot, too.

Yes, the size is somewhat reduced from the originals and the second-generation images and type are that much harder to read. But this set spans almost four decades in the development of the male erotic image. Compromises are necessary and the finished product is very much worth owning.

I liked the instructional/assignment approach. Although already an accomplished fine art nude photographer, I like the stimulation provided by the author to attempt new approaches to a familiar subject.

Amazon has be amazing for me while deployed to Iraq and now in Korea for a year. Thanks Amazon.

4 out of 5 stars Very well written and illustrated.......2005-08-31

I found this book very helpful as there are very few books written aimed at digital photography. The only complaint I have is the same complaint I have with most books like this and that is the movels are all young and appear to be professional. The authors of most books like this almost never use "lady next door" types and all have perfect figures. Most of the models I have to work with are slightly older and don't posses perfect figures. Other than that I found this bood to be very well written and illustrated. The Photoshop Elements section was also helpful.

5 out of 5 stars Wow, naked people! What's not to like?.......2005-08-31

I'm glad the author didn't use children or puppies. The women in this book make much better subjects. This is a great introduction to a genre of photography that has not been well-represented in the digital imaging field.

4 out of 5 stars Nice intro to digital nudes.......2005-08-28

While it's possibly not the greatest book on nude photography or digital photography, it's a good intermingling of the two.

It provides a reasonable amount of detail on how to get the best out of digital cameras when taking nude photo's. Photo's are good, and the information provided is good enough to enable you to start taking your own in short order. It covers both camera and computer basics.

Overall a good introductory book on the subject.

2 out of 5 stars Good art, but why is it still on my shelf?.......2007-10-03

Luis Royo has talent. You would know, or else why check out the reviews to 'double-check'? His finished pieces are amazing, as you can see on covers of his books, but is it worth getting? Hmm... Well I bought it and liked it for the first 5 minutes, but afterwards regretted owning it.

It's a thin book without much paintings. You see sketches and ideas that was flowing through him at the time, but not much to be satisfied. It's not something you would carry and impress others with.

Just be prepared to be impressed and ending up ebaying it.

2 out of 5 stars Could be much better.......2006-12-20

The artwork that is in the book is interesting but the number of larger artworks is disappointing, most are small. The book itself is thin and small. Overall a great disappointment compared to the other Royo books I own and not worth the price when compared to what I paid for the other full size Royo books that are packed with full page artworks.

2 out of 5 stars disappointing book altho great art.......2006-02-13

this was my first non-photo art-book, and i gave it a try because i enjoy Royo's work when i see it in various places. maybe because i'm used to big and heavy photo books, this one was such a disappointment. the book is physically small and thin. then i open it, and it's easy to count how many of the pages have been actually used to show a full page size drawing; 11. i think 11 is not much. there are several smaller sketches and drawings thrown on the pages here and there, but they are seriously small and i would enjoy seeing more detail since i'm sure the detail does look great. the layout all in all is a bit weird in places... i suppose it is harder to work with drawings than photos tho since the afore mentioned don't have clear borders always.

the 11 or so full size pages are great, Royo's work is inspiring and sexy and raw. i think i bought this one used and it was really cheap, so i guess i somewhat got my money's worth but i'm not going to risk it buying another one his books before i see it in real life.

5 out of 5 stars My wish would be that this book be full sized.......2004-08-24

On the plus side this is a hard cover book so that sort of makes up for the smaller size and low page count.
some reviews may rate this book low due to its explicitness, but
that's really what the prohibited series of books represents..
not just nude - seminude pinups..
In here you'll find some of the same type of art you may be used to from Royo.. and some more explicit.
With the prohibited series Royo seems to like using a sketch like technique for most of his pics.. very dull browns or stained looking pages, a few images are the full or vibrant color that Royo is famous for. It's a different style to his first books, but you can tell its by the same artist.
Even his son Romulo chimes in with a few pieces of his art, they are very tiny images. it looks like he uses real photos and manipulates them with a computer.
Prohibited is a must have series for fans of Luis Royo that want to find out some Malefic Secrets, Dreams and Visons of Luis Royo's Women

4 out of 5 stars Not what I expected.......2002-12-10

Well I enjoyed this book to some degree, but it just wasn't what I expected. The images in it are incredbly beautiful, but the text seems to be a little bit over the top, and ever silly at times. This is a nice book of illustrated erotica, but I usually find myself ignoring the words and just appreciating the artwork.
